# You're Being Watched

Yes, it’s true: you’re being watched. And so am I. Each day, in all we do -- at home and at work and on the street -- people are watching how we speak and the way we behave and the quality of our integrity. The best leaders influence their followers by understanding that every move they make sends a signal to their team on what behavior sets the standard. In my leadership keynotes for fast-growing companies I share the term “LBE”: Lead By Example and note that it’s the opposite of CBE: Complaint, Blame and Excuse (which gets a leader nowhere). So yes, people do watch what we do, even if we fall into the trap of thinking that they don’t. And our reputation is based on the richness of that doing. I wanted to just remind you of an idea called the democratization of leadership. So you can lead without a title, and you don't want to base your leadership on your position, because that puts you in a very vulnerable position. That way, if you lose your title, you'll lose the power. I want you to lead from your not from your authority, but from your morality. People follow people they trust. People follow people they respect. People follow people who care about them. People follow people who make them feel safe. So remember not to lead with a title, but to lead with your character. Lead with your kindness. Lead with your vision, lead with your bravery, lead with your creativity and build leaders at every level of the organization. If you have a 50 leader company, well, then see each person as a leader that waiting to be developed. If you have 100 employees or 1000 employees, then see it as a 1000 leader company. You will be undefeatable if you have a thousand leaders and every level of the organization. So please remember lead without a title. Please remember, your job is to build leaders and mentor leaders and spend time with them. Don't be busy being busy. Be busy building more leaders and ultimately lead by example. LBE one of my favorite acronyms. Your behavior sends a message to everyone on the shop floor as to the behavior that's permitted. So when you're ethical, they'll be ethical. When you're passionate, they'll be passionate. When you're working hard, they'll be hard. When you're finding solutions to problems versus complaining, they'll be doing the same. So culture is your secret weapon and you build culture from the top. That's a quick one today, and I wish you an amazing day as a legendary leader by.
