To not die when you get knocked down is to play with the gods. And soar with the angels. Sometimes—in the hardest and darkest of times—what helps you survive and then thrive and then fly is putting one foot after another foot, after another foot. Small baby steps that eventually get us running again. The key is not to give up. Never ever never ever ever ever ever never ever! (Thanks Winston). Not to become an injustice collector. Not to give up on your heroic ideals and your gorgeous dreams for a richer, better, happier and more helpful life. Become UnKillAble. Please. I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in an Artificial Age (Penguin Random House). It's a parable and it's different (by far!) from any book I've ever written. I'll be sharing the cover with you on September 15. In this session, I'm going to do two things for you. The first thing I'm going to do is I'm
going to talk about a simple productivity strategy that can really help you upgrade your
performance and your impact. And number two, I'm going to read from The Everyday
Hero Manifesto. It's about gratitude and in particular undergrad. So let me get right into
the idea on productivity. A lot of times what we do is we're very focused on building an
ecosystem that allows us to be more productive, or we focus on our fitness so we have
more energy, or we remove the energy vampires so we are more inspired to do better
work, or we manage our time better by having a clear daily schedule, which is a really
important idea. Another thing to think about that isn't so common though, is removing the
friction or what I call drag from your life. All of those undoes all of those incompletions.
Maybe it's you haven't got your will done. Maybe it's a friendship that you haven't
repaired. Maybe it's some kind of a messy room in your house. Those things create
psychic drag, which drain your energy. And so each day when you consistently do the
things that you've been resisting and putting off because no one likes, it's very easy to
procrastinate on those drags and on that friction. But as you start to say, oh, I need to get
my will done. Oh my finance. I don't have a financial plan. Oh, there is that friendship I
need to repair. Oh, there is that mechanical issue with my car or my motorbike and you
consistently start finishing those incompletions. It is remarkable how much energy you
start to have, how much more focus you have have. Because even a subconscious level,
all of those incompletions are draining your cognitive energy. And when you start to
complete them and finish the circle, you have more energy, more focus, and you become
far more productive. Second thing I promised I read a section from The Everyday Hero
Manifesto and that is chapter 30 called Expect Ungrateful. It's a powerful idea in the
chapter. Let's get right into it. Please don't judge me as cynical, but I've mentally
conditioned myself to expect ungrateful. Here's what I mean. Norman Vincent Peale
positive thinking, classic. Caldwell. The power of positive thinking. This ceaselessly
optimistic, optimistic minister encourages us to expect in gratitude. As I understand it, his
point is that most people will never truly appreciate your goodness and gentleness. It's
just not generally human nature at this stage of our species evolution. So why lose peace
of mind and valuable creative energy? Hoping to receive it. I'll put it another way. Avoid
becoming an injustice collector. That way of seeing the world just beats you down and
rips you up. Are you in any way an injustice collector? I love what Norman Vincent
Peale taught to us. Expect and gratitude. Just go out there. Remember, at this level of the
human species evolution, most people will be your friends and they will appreciate you.
And they will be kind to you when you do things that make them happy. Most people or
many people just think about themselves and the moment you do something they don't
like, they will be ungrateful and they will forget all of the kindness, all of compassion, all
of the generosity you have shown them except ungrateful and still just do good things.
Still be kind. Still be excellent to people. Still keep your promises. Still be generous. Still
take the high road. Even if someone doesn't appreciate it. Why? It's the right thing to do
and makes you stronger in your self-love, your self-respect and your personal honor will
continue to grow. Finally, I believe in karma. Good things happen to people who do good
things.
