Sometimes—in the hardest and darkest of times—what helps you survive and then thrive and then fly is putting one foot after another foot, after another foot. Small baby steps that eventually get us running again. The key is not to give up. Never ever never ever ever ever ever never ever! (Thanks Winston). Not to become an injustice collector. Not to give up on your heroic ideals and your gorgeous dreams for a richer, better, happier and more helpful life. Become UnKillAble. Please. I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in an Artificial Age (Penguin Random House). It's a parable and it's different (by far!) from any book I've ever written. You can join the list here if you'd like to be among the first to receive any updates. I'm going to walk you through five shifts I want you to focus on. They're very unusual.
But if you followed my work for a while, you know that have the results? Very few have.
You must be willing to do what very few people do. And so the first thing I wanted to
talk about is what I'm talking about now, which is philosophy. We live in a world where
science is taken over and machines seem to be taking over, and people are living in their
heads, and everything is an analysis and a spreadsheet. And there's nothing wrong with
that. But what about philosophy? I think practicality is important, but philosophy is
equally or if not more important, if you don't know your philosophy, which is your
approach on how you want to live your life. If you don't read philosophy, if you don't
write about your philosophy in terms of what do you want to stand for? What's your
personal mountaintop and your individual Mount Everest this year? If you don't have a
philosophy that contains your values and what you want to bring to the world, then you're
going to live your neighbor's philosophy, or the culture's philosophy or the influencers.
You might follow their philosophy. So the first point I want you to really think about is
what is your philosophy for the rest of your life? And that allows you a mountaintop of
sorts, because there's no point in climbing a mountain, only to realize at the end of your
life you climb the wrong mountain. So to do that, I'm going to encourage you to take
some time. Maybe it's one morning, maybe it's one week where you go to a metaphorical
cabin away from world in the wilderness, so you can get away from the noise and hear
the signal. It's very powerful as a leader, as a builder, as a maker, as a heavyweight on the
planet to get away from the world and to search within and to listen to what the Quakers
called that still, quiet voice within, which is the voice of your truth, not the chattering of
your ego. So think about your philosophy, your approach to life. Write it down. Get a
journal about your philosophy, because your philosophy will drive your execution and
your performance. The second thing I would say is second shift or pivot is shift from
applause to truth. And this is where the great creators really win. I just finished one of my
new favorite books, and it's The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway. And to me, it's not
just a book about an old, tired man chasing a noble and great marlin in the sea. To me, it's
a spiritual treaties, and it's about a man who's trying to do something special. And he's not
chasing this marlin almost to the point of death, because he wants applause, because he's
alone deep out in sea, under the stars, or watching sunsets as he pursues this marlin. Now, this book is really about him being authentic. He's a fisherman. He knows who he is. And his whole life he's waited for a fish such as this. And even though he's alone, even though there's no cameras, he must chase this fish and win this fish. And I think it's so important in our lives not to be doing things because it will impress the crowd. What artistry and creativity and mastery is truly about is trusting your soul's call on what project you must bring to the world. And even if no one reads that book, even if no one tastes that food, if you're chef, even if no one watches the film, if you're a screenwriter, even if no one uses the technology, if you're a coder or a builder, you put your magic into the world, and that is the greatest victory a creator could make. Who cares what other people think? The
third pivot I want you to think about is writing versus scrolling. More than ever, I
understand. I can't, not right, I must write, and that's why I write the books that I right?
But writing is an incredible skill for you to think about your thinking and to learn what
you know. I'll repeat that again because it's so important for you. Writing is allowing you
to consider your thinking and your philosophy, but it's also a process that will help you
understand what you know and get it on the paper. The very nature of writing causes you
to find words and put words to what might be vague thinking. And the more you can
know your thinking, the more you can execute around what you know with brilliance and
clarity and mastery. So let's scrolling. It's so easy to get trapped into using the finest
hours of your greatest days, watching things that in the moment release the
neurochemicals and attract us. But those are mostly escapes and potential unexpressed
turns to pain. It does. And I don't want you to experience the pain of regret. I want you to
experience the joy of creating, making, and bringing your gifts and talents to light of day.
So write more. Because writing not only increases awareness, but writing deepens
commitment. And there's great science showing that when we write about that which we
want, we deepen our willpower to get what we want done. Number four, it's a big pivot.
Go deep versus wide. Become a minimalist versus a maximalist. We live in a culture that
in so many ways encourages us to buy a lot and do a lot, and so many of the clients that I
mentor, they feel if they're not doing a thousand things and chasing a million shiny toys
to get to the top of business and the world, they feel shame and they're doing something
wrong. Swirl needs more beauty. This world needs more magic, and the job of an
entrepreneur and a leader and a builder is to push outright magic into the marketplace that serves other human beings. Yes. Entrepreneurship and leadership and work, if you
choose, can be a spiritual exercise that's good for the world and good for your soul.
Learning versus entertaining. And what do I mean by that? Well, I think the culture has
gone really deep down the rabbit hole in getting so many good souls, really addicted and
distracted and diverted into just being entertained all the time. And obviously, if you've
read some of the science that really alters the nature of your human brain, we become
perpetual digital stackers versus protecting our ability to go deep on a problem. So we go
into flow state and find a solution that disrupts the game. And so what I'm encouraging
you to do is really take the time to build on to your schedule weeks of learning and go to
courses and get a mentor and spend one hour. I call this the 60 minute student one hour
every evening writing in a journal about what you're learning. Or it might be studying a
very hard book, but difficult book, but one that will really a grade your craft and get your
game charts and study them and become more of a student. Because the thing about a
master is to always think like a beginner. And nothing fails like success, because the
more knowledge you can build and send out into the world, the more there will be of the
world sends to you. And that's what business is, as you know so well. It's a reciprocity
game for what value you give to other people. You want to help more people push more
value, be more of use. And you can do that by knowing more than anyone who has ever
done your work in the history of your work. Also, when it comes to problems, and any
entrepreneur and any leader in any maker is going to face problems, I want you to be
unkillable and practice overcoming problems and becoming resilient so that when those
problems show up, you are so used to overcoming problems and turning difficulty into
opportunity that it becomes easy. But you do that. The more you develop yourself and the
more you'll learn.
