A simple idea to get you to your next level: to earn more you must learn more. As you learn what the best do, you will develop new awareness. With better awareness, you can make better choices. And with better choices, you are certain to see better results. Investing in learning is the smartest investment you’ll ever make. And please don’t tell me you are too busy to spend at least 60 minutes a day learning. Some of the busiest people I know read or listen to CDs or do online training for at least an hour a day. A lot of people are too busy being busy. Shift from being busy to getting results. See, the leader who learns the most wins. And you’ll never rise higher in life than who you are. To perform better and to serve braver, become a greater person. I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in an Artificial Age (Penguin Random House). It's a parable and it's different (by far!) from any book I've ever written. You can join the list here if you'd like to be among the first to receive any updates. There is a concept of playing with called the twin currencies, and I want you to think about them. I'm just going to share some of the ideas that are on my mind for you to meditate on and deconstruct and journal upon and discuss, the twin currencies. There's two main currencies for an entrepreneur. Number one income and number two impact. The paradox is by focusing on impact you grow the income. So if you want to help a billion people, or if you want to make $1 billion help a billion people thinking about impact. If you ask yourself, how can I add more value and solve more problems for more people, that's about impact. But the by product is more income. Alternatively, if you're focusing on
income, you're missing impact and you'll actually stifle your income. So the twin
currencies I want you to think about that. What's also on my mind is how great leaders
build self-discipline. When I mentor the billionaires, when I work with the sports
superstars, I see so many very disciplined people. They all have one trait in common they
understand the discipline is built by the consistent doing of difficult things. I'll repeat that
again because it's so important for your growth, for your continued ascent to world-class.
Discipline is built by the consistent doing of difficult things. To put another way,
discipline is built by impulse control. Discipline is built by putting off short-term pleasure
in pursuit of long term fulfillment. So every time you know you should do something and
do it, you build self-discipline. One way to think about it is discipline is built on the
consistent follow through of self promises. If you promise yourself you're going to get up
tomorrow morning and work out at 5 a.m. and you do it. You build self-discipline, you
build self-confidence, and also you build a stronger reputation with yourself because your
reputation of you is very powerful. If you promise you're going to read a book tonight or
part of a book tonight, and rather than turning on the TV or scrolling on your white
screen, you follow through. You grow in self-discipline. You say, oh, today, tonight I'm
going to do a family meal. We're going to put our devices away, and we're just going to
talk and eat and enjoy each other's company. And you follow through on that
commitment or that self promise. You build self-discipline. So it's those small little acts
of self-discipline, those small wins done consistently that seems so insignificant. But
when done consistently over time, start to build an internal architecture of personal
heroism. It's really amazing how strongly you can be 30 days from now in terms of your
self-discipline, by keeping self promises and by those little acts of self-discipline that
seem like they won't make a difference, but actually stack into a tsunami of self-
discipline and self-regulation or personal willpower. So I want you to remember that
ideation without execution is delusion. And how do you execute on your big ideas
professionally, personally, spiritually, creatively? You start to build willpower, and
that comes by keeping yourself promises. So you know the weekly design system, getting
those to do's or those deliverables onto your daily list and then following through on
those, no one's perfect. If you get off track, pull yourself back on track. Don't beat
yourself up over it. But consistently doing most of what you promise to do, whether it's a
workout, whether it's a family meal, whether it's a team mentoring session, whether it's a
day spent in a hotel room on your Project X, your biggest game changing project that will
allow you to lead your domain consistently. Following through on those by keeping self
promises is a very powerful move for you to build world-class willpower and top level
discipline.
