[0:08] Speaker 1: last minute to apply. If you have to double check
[0:11] Speaker 1: what to bring with you, call any Social Security office.
[0:15] Speaker 1: Someone there will be glad to help you. In the
[0:17] Speaker 1: Denver metro area called two three two three six five.
[0:21] Speaker 2: Zero, the CBS Radio Mystery Theater presents come in Welcome.
[0:46] Speaker 2: I'm e G. Marshall. For a brief moment, during the
[0:51] Speaker 2: darkest night, we have a glimpse of ourselves and of
[0:55] Speaker 2: our world islanded in the stream of stars, pilgrims of mortality,
[1:02] Speaker 2: voyaging between horizons across the eternal seas of space and time. Yes,
[1:10] Speaker 2: for a moment, for only the briefest moment. She was kidnapped, sergeant.
[1:16] Speaker 3: That's right.
[1:17] Speaker 2: There were people on the street. Someone would have seen something.
[1:20] Speaker 2: Are you sure she didn't run away?
[1:22] Speaker 3: She was kidnapped, sergeant.
[1:24] Speaker 2: But if she were kidnapped, you'd have received a ransom note.
[1:27] Speaker 2: Is it possible for a girl to disappear without her trace,
[1:30] Speaker 2: as if the earth just swallowed her up? Our mystery
[1:41] Speaker 2: drama will Helmina Wilson was written especially for the Mystery
[1:46] Speaker 2: Theater by Sam Dan and stars Paul hect I'll be
[1:50] Speaker 2: back shortly with that. One absence, said the Roman philosopher,
[2:08] Speaker 2: makes the heart grow fonder. However, an unexplained absence is
[2:13] Speaker 2: bound to make the heart grow anxious. Society takes note
[2:18] Speaker 2: of this fact, which is why every police department has
[2:21] Speaker 2: its Bureau of Missing Persons. My name is Truesdale, Sydney Tuesdale. Yes,
[2:26] Speaker 2: mister Truesdale, I'm his wife.
[2:27] Speaker 3: Mollie Truesdale is.
[2:29] Speaker 2: A lieutenant downstairs. He said, to see you, Sergeant Keller.
[2:33] Speaker 4: Yes, so you wish to report a missing person?
[2:35] Speaker 2: Well, now that you.
[2:36] Speaker 5: Ask did, there's no way to get around it. She's
[2:39] Speaker 5: a missing person.
[2:40] Speaker 4: Who were we talking about?
[2:42] Speaker 5: My?
[2:43] Speaker 2: Our daughter?
[2:44] Speaker 5: And her name Margaret Truesdale. But she's known professionally as.
[2:48] Speaker 4: Margie True, Margie True.
[2:50] Speaker 2: Yes, it's shorter, snappier than Margaret Truesdale.
[2:54] Speaker 3: That's not important. Besides, I'm sure he never even heard
[2:57] Speaker 3: of her.
[2:57] Speaker 2: No, I need some statistics. Female, eh, Margaret or Margie
[3:03] Speaker 2: Truesdale or True? Age twenty three?
[3:07] Speaker 3: He'll be twenty three? Is he twenty two?
[3:10] Speaker 2: Blonde?
[3:11] Speaker 4: Natural height five nine?
[3:13] Speaker 2: Wait?
[3:15] Speaker 4: How long has she been missing?
[3:17] Speaker 2: How long? About three hours?
[3:20] Speaker 4: I should think it's almost one.
[3:22] Speaker 3: O'clock in the morning, at least four hours.
[3:24] Speaker 4: Yeah, well that's hardly enough time to be.
[3:28] Speaker 2: What were you going to say, it's hardly something to
[3:32] Speaker 2: be concerned about.
[3:34] Speaker 4: Yes, Now when was she do home?
[3:36] Speaker 2: The library closes at eight thirty.
[3:38] Speaker 3: Yes, she'd gone there to return.
[3:40] Speaker 2: A book because she always comes right back.
[3:42] Speaker 5: She should have been home nine o'clock at the latest.
[3:44] Speaker 4: Well, she might have gone to a movie.
[3:46] Speaker 3: She would have called.
[3:47] Speaker 2: Besides, she doesn't like to go alone. Just because a girl,
[3:52] Speaker 2: actually a young lady. Just because you haven't heard from
[3:55] Speaker 2: her in four hours, she may have met someone.
[3:59] Speaker 3: She doesn't stay up late.
[4:00] Speaker 2: She can't. She's in training.
[4:02] Speaker 3: She's missing.
[4:03] Speaker 5: There's nowhere she might have gone, nowhere she's supposed to
[4:07] Speaker 5: have gone except home, and that's four hours ago.
[4:10] Speaker 2: Sergeant. You have to find her.
[4:13] Speaker 4: Yes, and now I suggest you go home.
[4:16] Speaker 2: What are you trying to do? Get rid of us?
[4:18] Speaker 5: I don't think you're taking this seriously, sergeant.
[4:21] Speaker 4: Please missus trusday.
[4:22] Speaker 2: Your place is home by the phone in case she's
[4:26] Speaker 2: trying to reach you. Well, you saw her last.
[4:30] Speaker 5: At six thirty, and she was wearing the cocoa brown
[4:35] Speaker 5: flax and an eggshell blouse.
[4:37] Speaker 2: She was carrying the beige sweater. Do you have a
[4:39] Speaker 2: picture of her? See, I told you they'd want a picture.
[4:44] Speaker 4: Thank you. She's very pretty. Your address at six thirteen.
[4:52] Speaker 5: Delaware, and the library's at the corner of Garfield.
[4:55] Speaker 2: So somewhere in those eight blocks right right.
[4:58] Speaker 4: We'll start the routine.
[5:00] Speaker 3: Routine, routine.
[5:02] Speaker 2: This is our daughter, he means the police routine. And Molly,
[5:06] Speaker 2: what are you going to do?
[5:08] Speaker 3: I mean right now?
[5:09] Speaker 2: Well, I we'll check out the hospital, say a thing
[5:12] Speaker 2: like that. We will do everything we can to find
[5:14] Speaker 2: your daughter. Sergeant Keller, Oh yeah, Martie, the Tuesday will girl. Yeah,
[5:26] Speaker 2: what have you got? Nothing?
[5:28] Speaker 4: Huh? Anything from the cup on the beat hospitals? How
[5:34] Speaker 4: about the Morgue? Oh okay, thanks?
[5:43] Speaker 3: May I help you?
[5:45] Speaker 4: Yes, I'm a police detective. My identification.
[5:48] Speaker 2: Oh were you working here at the library last night,
[5:52] Speaker 2: miss Dacy?
[5:53] Speaker 3: Yes?
[5:53] Speaker 2: And to win well.
[5:55] Speaker 5: Wednesday nights we close the library at eight thirty.
[5:59] Speaker 4: Do you know miss Margaret Truesdale?
[6:02] Speaker 2: Oh?
[6:02] Speaker 4: Yes, what do you know about her?
[6:05] Speaker 3: Is she in any trouble?
[6:06] Speaker 4: I hope not.
[6:07] Speaker 2: Well.
[6:08] Speaker 5: I really don't know very much about her.
[6:11] Speaker 4: Was she in last night?
[6:12] Speaker 2: Oh?
[6:12] Speaker 3: Yes, she was?
[6:13] Speaker 4: What time did she arrive.
[6:15] Speaker 3: I'm not sure. I didn't see her come in.
[6:18] Speaker 4: Do you know when she left?
[6:20] Speaker 2: Oh?
[6:20] Speaker 5: Yes, at exactly seven point thirty.
[6:23] Speaker 4: You're sure, Oh, absolutely.
[6:24] Speaker 5: Because when she said good night to me, I remember
[6:27] Speaker 5: saying to her, I've got one more hour to go.
[6:30] Speaker 4: Do you know anything at all about her?
[6:33] Speaker 5: Oh, she's a very pretty girl.
[6:36] Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah she is.
[6:37] Speaker 3: Oh see, she looks.
[6:39] Speaker 5: To be about nineteen. She comes in quite often early
[6:43] Speaker 5: in the evening. She reads for a while, and then
[6:46] Speaker 5: she takes out.
[6:47] Speaker 3: A book and leaves.
[6:48] Speaker 4: Is she ever in here with anyone?
[6:50] Speaker 3: Oh no, no, she's always alone.
[6:52] Speaker 4: Does she talk to anybody?
[6:54] Speaker 3: Just to me? As far as I know.
[6:56] Speaker 4: What do you talk about?
[6:58] Speaker 5: Oh?
[6:58] Speaker 2: Books?
[6:59] Speaker 3: Mostly?
[7:00] Speaker 4: What kind of books?
[7:01] Speaker 2: Fiction?
[7:02] Speaker 3: Usually short stories?
[7:04] Speaker 4: Who's your favorite author?
[7:06] Speaker 5: I would say Edgar Allan Poe? This one book she'd
[7:10] Speaker 5: head out for quite a while. By that, I mean
[7:13] Speaker 5: she'd keep renewing it in What book was that? As
[7:16] Speaker 5: a matter of fact, she'd returned it last night. She
[7:20] Speaker 5: said she'd finally bought herself a copy and didn't need
[7:23] Speaker 5: ours anymore.
[7:24] Speaker 4: What's the name of the book?
[7:26] Speaker 5: Oh, William Wilson and Other Stories by Edgar Allan Poe.
[7:32] Speaker 3: Why do I ask.
[7:33] Speaker 2: Sergeant, I'm just hoping one thing may lead to another. Nay,
[7:38] Speaker 2: what is this all about, miss Stacy? It seems you're
[7:43] Speaker 2: the last person I can find so far who has
[7:46] Speaker 2: seen Miss Truesdale since she.
[7:47] Speaker 4: Left here last night. I don't understand she disappeared.
[7:52] Speaker 5: Oh, does anyone have any ideas as to why.
[7:56] Speaker 4: I came here to see? If you have any ideas?
[8:00] Speaker 5: As I said, I don't really know her. She's very quiet.
[8:04] Speaker 5: She's been coming in for a long time. We say hello,
[8:09] Speaker 5: we say goodbye. We occasionally passed the time of day
[8:13] Speaker 5: while she checks out a book.
[8:15] Speaker 4: On those occasions, what do you talk about?
[8:18] Speaker 3: Oh?
[8:19] Speaker 5: Nothing, There is nothing of any significance. Maybe the weather
[8:23] Speaker 5: if it's unusually hot or cold.
[8:25] Speaker 3: Or rainy or dry.
[8:27] Speaker 4: And that's all. Oh, yes, just about miss Dacy. Tried
[8:31] Speaker 4: to think. Did she ever say anything else?
[8:36] Speaker 2: Not?
[8:36] Speaker 5: Really, nothing significant that could.
[8:38] Speaker 2: Even be insignificant?
[8:40] Speaker 5: Oh, sergeant, I wish I had some idea of what
[8:43] Speaker 5: you want?
[8:44] Speaker 2: Yes? And why is he? At seven thirty last night?
[8:48] Speaker 2: She left here, presumably to return home. It's an eight
[8:52] Speaker 2: and a half block walks south along Delaware. It's a wide,
[8:55] Speaker 2: well lighted street filled with people. There was any vile
[9:00] Speaker 2: once it would have been noticed.
[9:01] Speaker 3: Well, then perhaps she didn't go home.
[9:03] Speaker 4: Where else was she bound for?
[9:05] Speaker 2: And why.
[9:07] Speaker 4: Was there anything unusual in her manner last night?
[9:11] Speaker 5: Oh?
[9:11] Speaker 4: No, not that I could see, miss Dacy.
[9:15] Speaker 2: Could you keep thinking and see if you come up
[9:18] Speaker 2: with anything, anything at all?
[9:28] Speaker 4: Oh, it's his Truesdawn.
[9:30] Speaker 5: Oh, it's the police, sergeant's sid.
[9:33] Speaker 3: It's the sergeant.
[9:34] Speaker 4: May I come in?
[9:36] Speaker 3: Oh? Have you found her?
[9:38] Speaker 2: And no?
[9:39] Speaker 3: Oh? Is there any news?
[9:42] Speaker 4: I'm afraid not.
[9:43] Speaker 3: Do you hear what he says?
[9:44] Speaker 2: Seed?
[9:45] Speaker 3: He's afraid not? What's that supposed to mean?
[9:48] Speaker 2: I guess it means they have no news yet.
[9:50] Speaker 5: I think it means a little bit more than that,
[9:53] Speaker 5: like what it means they've been looking, but so far
[9:56] Speaker 5: they're lit.
[9:57] Speaker 3: Isn't that a fact?
[9:58] Speaker 4: Sergeant? Well we need more information.
[10:01] Speaker 2: Well you know her name, what she looks like, how
[10:04] Speaker 2: she was dressed? What more can we tell you?
[10:07] Speaker 4: Would she have any reason for leaving home? What are
[10:10] Speaker 4: you saying?
[10:11] Speaker 5: It's obvious what he's saying said. He's implying she ran off.
[10:15] Speaker 4: I'm suggesting it as a possibility.
[10:18] Speaker 2: And I'm here to go on record that it's an impossibility.
[10:21] Speaker 4: Why is that, mister Truesdale.
[10:23] Speaker 3: Now you have no right to ask slimmer down, said
[10:25] Speaker 3: simmered Down. He's a cop.
[10:27] Speaker 5: They've got a right to ask anything they please. No, Sergeant,
[10:33] Speaker 5: she did not run off.
[10:34] Speaker 4: Can you be sure of it?
[10:36] Speaker 2: Why would a.
[10:36] Speaker 5: Girl who loved her home, loved her parents, and loved
[10:39] Speaker 5: her career just up and take off?
[10:42] Speaker 4: Yes? Where did she work at.
[10:45] Speaker 3: The Sunrise Athletic Club?
[10:47] Speaker 2: What sort of job did she have there? No, she
[10:49] Speaker 2: wasn't employed there. What my wife means is that she
[10:52] Speaker 2: worked out there.
[10:53] Speaker 4: Oh, she was an athlete.
[10:55] Speaker 5: See sid, he never heard of her. You never heard
[10:59] Speaker 5: of Margie, true, sergeant, and.
[11:02] Speaker 4: No, not until you reported her missing.
[11:04] Speaker 3: He doesn't know who she is, what she does.
[11:07] Speaker 5: And we're paying your friend Morrison a pretty penny for
[11:10] Speaker 5: publicity too.
[11:11] Speaker 2: He's not my friend, all right, all right? She goes
[11:13] Speaker 2: to the athletic club. Now, why, she's probably the best
[11:16] Speaker 2: swimmer in the world.
[11:17] Speaker 3: What do you mean.
[11:18] Speaker 2: Probably when she was about fourteen, she was very sick
[11:21] Speaker 2: and the doctor said the best thing for her would
[11:24] Speaker 2: be the swim.
[11:25] Speaker 5: She became a champion swimmer by the time she recovered
[11:27] Speaker 5: her health.
[11:28] Speaker 2: That took more than six years.
[11:29] Speaker 5: Anyhow, she decided she should go.
[11:31] Speaker 3: Into the Olympics.
[11:33] Speaker 2: She's almost twenty three. That's maybe a little old. Actually,
[11:38] Speaker 2: she started at a time when most of these kids
[11:40] Speaker 2: are ready to retire. But she's got it and.
[11:44] Speaker 3: We've been working with her setting things up.
[11:46] Speaker 2: This is the year she has to make it. Yes,
[11:50] Speaker 2: but the fact is she's missing now. People disappear for
[11:56] Speaker 2: one of three general reasons. First, foul play, oh say that.
[12:00] Speaker 2: The second, for some reason of their own. She'd have
[12:03] Speaker 2: absolutely no reason to run away.
[12:05] Speaker 4: A third. I think this is very rare amnesia.
[12:09] Speaker 3: That's it.
[12:11] Speaker 5: Our little girl is wandering around somewhere, not even knowing.
[12:14] Speaker 3: Who she is.
[12:14] Speaker 4: I'd like to talk with some of her friends.
[12:17] Speaker 3: I'm sure they wouldn't know very much.
[12:19] Speaker 4: Could you give me some names.
[12:21] Speaker 3: She wasn't really that close with too many people.
[12:24] Speaker 4: Does she have a boyfriend?
[12:27] Speaker 5: No, you can't fit because she isn't pretty.
[12:29] Speaker 2: If she was interested the way they buzz around like
[12:32] Speaker 2: bees after honey.
[12:34] Speaker 5: But she's in training early to bed, no distractions.
[12:37] Speaker 2: The idea is, you win the Olympics, you get the fame,
[12:41] Speaker 2: the publicity, and you go on from there. Endorsements, TV movies,
[12:45] Speaker 2: a whole new important career, and then then.
[12:48] Speaker 5: You're exposed to a totally different class of men.
[12:51] Speaker 4: Tell me about her daily routine.
[12:54] Speaker 2: Well, she'd sleep with the club in the morning, say.
[12:56] Speaker 3: About nine, and she'd work out till lunch.
[13:00] Speaker 2: And then she'd rest and back again for lessons in
[13:03] Speaker 2: practice so forth.
[13:04] Speaker 3: That's a pretty solid day.
[13:05] Speaker 4: And that's all she did.
[13:07] Speaker 5: Well enough, we'd go out to dinner shore or we'd
[13:12] Speaker 5: stay home and watch TV.
[13:13] Speaker 2: Is she like to go to the library. She'd loved
[13:16] Speaker 2: to read because she was very intelligent. She could talk
[13:19] Speaker 2: about things like what, well, you know things specifically, just
[13:26] Speaker 2: things in general. Can you remember any individual topics a sergeant,
[13:31] Speaker 2: there's no point giving me the third degree.
[13:34] Speaker 3: I don't speak to the sergeant like that.
[13:35] Speaker 5: Sid right now, he's our only hope. Well, what do
[13:40] Speaker 5: people talk about in the weather, sports, the news?
[13:44] Speaker 3: What's happening?
[13:44] Speaker 4: Did she seem nervous or scared lately?
[13:48] Speaker 2: What does that mean? It means I guess was she
[13:51] Speaker 2: maybe afraid of something? Of what? That's what this police
[13:55] Speaker 2: officer wants to know.
[13:56] Speaker 5: Let me set you straight, sergeant. She had nothing to
[13:59] Speaker 5: be afraid. She'd done nothing bad.
[14:02] Speaker 4: Was there anything at all unusual about her?
[14:05] Speaker 2: Behavior.
[14:06] Speaker 3: No, nothing, she's got anesia.
[14:09] Speaker 2: I know it.
[14:11] Speaker 3: Well, what does that well mean?
[14:14] Speaker 2: It means he's in the dark, he's up a tree,
[14:18] Speaker 2: just like us.
[14:19] Speaker 5: Well, what are you standing around here for, sergeant? Why
[14:21] Speaker 5: aren't you out looking for her?
[14:23] Speaker 2: Out where I need help.
[14:26] Speaker 3: We're willing to help.
[14:28] Speaker 2: You are willing, But I'm afraid you are not able.
[14:31] Speaker 2: We are doing everything we can.
[14:33] Speaker 4: You are not answering my question.
[14:35] Speaker 2: That isn't so. You don't know who her friends are.
[14:38] Speaker 2: You don't know what she thinks about. She's a very
[14:41] Speaker 2: dedicated girl.
[14:43] Speaker 4: Yes, then why does she run off?
[14:44] Speaker 5: She would never run off she has amnesia.
[14:49] Speaker 4: Why would she have amnesia?
[14:51] Speaker 3: Well, because she's.
[14:52] Speaker 2: An athlete in training, she's in perfect health.
[14:55] Speaker 3: Well, then she was kidnapped.
[14:59] Speaker 4: Right off the street Delaware Avenue.
[15:01] Speaker 5: They could have overpowered her, forced her into a car.
[15:03] Speaker 2: She wouldn't go quietly. She seems a big, strong girl.
[15:06] Speaker 3: I don't say it like that. You make her sound ungainly.
[15:10] Speaker 3: She's beautifully built.
[15:12] Speaker 2: You can't rule out the possibility of kidnapping, sergeant. You'd
[15:15] Speaker 2: have received word by now about a ransom.
[15:17] Speaker 5: Well, maybe it's the kind of kidnapping where girls are
[15:21] Speaker 5: sold into you know slavery.
[15:24] Speaker 2: Oh please, Molly a sergeant. We're desperate, Yes, Sir, I understand,
[15:31] Speaker 2: and I just wish you knew a little more about her.
[15:34] Speaker 5: Sergeant, find her, please, She's own little girl, and we
[15:41] Speaker 5: love her.
[15:51] Speaker 2: There is a public service announcement on the air during
[15:54] Speaker 2: the evening which asks the question, you know where your
[15:59] Speaker 2: children are? That's a good question. However, a question, more
[16:04] Speaker 2: to the point is one that asks, do you know
[16:08] Speaker 2: who your child is? I suppose some people would be
[16:12] Speaker 2: afraid to find out more information on this general subject.
[16:17] Speaker 2: In act too shortly. You need not wander afar to
[16:36] Speaker 2: seek out the stranger. He is with you, within you.
[16:42] Speaker 2: What the poet is saying is how can we hope
[16:44] Speaker 2: to see the truth in others when we are unaware
[16:47] Speaker 2: of what the truth is about ourselves? Who are we?
[16:50] Speaker 2: What are we? And why? This has preoccupied the finest
[16:55] Speaker 2: brain since the beginning of time. So if we don't
[16:59] Speaker 2: completely settle live here, Please don't ask for your money back,
[17:04] Speaker 2: Sargeant killer, What can I do for you?
[17:06] Speaker 4: What do you know about Margie Truesdale. Well, I'm not
[17:11] Speaker 4: trying to evade your question, Sergeant, I'm just trying to
[17:15] Speaker 4: think what do I know about Margie? Yes, it has
[17:19] Speaker 4: to be nothing, mister Sparta. You're her swimming coach. She
[17:23] Speaker 4: spends eight hours a day here.
[17:25] Speaker 2: Or did I think she was fourteen, skinny, consumptive, anemic
[17:32] Speaker 2: little thing and just barely alive today? Would you believe it?
[17:38] Speaker 4: I can't believe you know nothing about her.
[17:40] Speaker 2: As some people go through life, talkers, this one's a listener.
[17:45] Speaker 4: Are you telling me she says nothing at all?
[17:47] Speaker 2: Oh, she talks. I even go so far as to
[17:50] Speaker 2: say she chatters, But you analyze the conversation and there's
[17:56] Speaker 2: nothing there. Still, you've known this girl for eight years.
[17:58] Speaker 2: You do have some sort of relationship. Look out that window, sergeant,
[18:04] Speaker 2: see that swimming pool that forms the boundaries of our relationship.
[18:09] Speaker 4: But you do talk about something true.
[18:12] Speaker 2: We have long talks about diet, breat control, coordination. Look,
[18:17] Speaker 2: I played ball at school. I was close to my coach.
[18:21] Speaker 2: I mean there were times when we just sit around,
[18:24] Speaker 2: you know, and I know what you're looking for, but
[18:27] Speaker 2: it's not here, not like with the other kids. So
[18:31] Speaker 2: you become more than just a coach. You're sort of
[18:34] Speaker 2: an older brother, maybe your second father. You talk about
[18:38] Speaker 2: what really bothers kids today, sex, friendship, life, but not
[18:43] Speaker 2: with her. I can't even begin to imagine. Well, why
[18:47] Speaker 2: was she training all out constantly? I mean, was it
[18:50] Speaker 2: something she wanted or were her parents putting on the pressure.
[18:54] Speaker 2: I don't know where all that tremendous dedication came from.
[18:58] Speaker 2: Could have been hers, could have been there.
[19:00] Speaker 4: How did she feel toward her mother and father?
[19:02] Speaker 2: Well? I never saw so much love on the part
[19:05] Speaker 2: of a kid, considering the circumstances.
[19:07] Speaker 4: What circumstances, Well, considering they weren't her.
[19:10] Speaker 2: Real father and mother. Just because two people adopt a child,
[19:14] Speaker 2: that doesn't mean they're not the real parents. Well, I
[19:17] Speaker 2: didn't mean it to sound that way. He was her stepfather.
[19:21] Speaker 2: And then when her mother died, Margie was still a
[19:25] Speaker 2: little girl and he married Mollie. He said, Molly raised
[19:29] Speaker 2: her like their own. What were her chances for making
[19:32] Speaker 2: the Olympics? Well a lot goes into that, But I
[19:38] Speaker 2: don't see how she can be kept out. She's ready.
[19:42] Speaker 2: The trials begin in a couple of weeks, but if
[19:46] Speaker 2: she's not around, she'll miss him. Also, every day she's gone,
[19:50] Speaker 2: she's losing out on training.
[19:51] Speaker 4: You really can't give me anything to go on, can you?
[19:54] Speaker 2: Sorry? Friends, and I don't think she had any. She
[19:57] Speaker 2: had to be friendly with some bow with everybody. That's
[20:01] Speaker 2: not the same as having friends. I can't believe there
[20:04] Speaker 2: was nothing to this girl's existence except swimming.
[20:06] Speaker 4: She must have had another life, one that nobody knew about.
[20:10] Speaker 2: Maybe, But where did she lead it? And when did
[20:14] Speaker 2: you find the time?
[20:20] Speaker 4: Well? I love their sergeant, I'm ms.
[20:24] Speaker 5: What are you drinking?
[20:25] Speaker 4: I'm on duty.
[20:26] Speaker 5: Lemonade, make it sour. That's sixty cent sage. Gotta keep
[20:33] Speaker 5: things on the up and.
[20:34] Speaker 2: Up, you know.
[20:36] Speaker 4: And did you read in the papers about a girl
[20:38] Speaker 4: named Margaret Truesday?
[20:40] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[20:40] Speaker 4: I never read the papers.
[20:42] Speaker 5: Why should I go chasing it the bad news?
[20:44] Speaker 4: It'll come soon enough. Yeah, well this one just disappeared.
[20:47] Speaker 5: Oh well girls do that quite often.
[20:50] Speaker 4: Yeah, this is a photograph.
[20:52] Speaker 5: Ah nice, Yes, indeed, got a meat on those bones
[20:58] Speaker 5: and it all looks like.
[21:00] Speaker 4: A proud she's a swimmer. She just vanished.
[21:04] Speaker 5: Not, if I can paraphrase the French she or she long?
[21:08] Speaker 4: No, no, no, there's no.
[21:09] Speaker 2: Man involved that you know of, that anybody knows of.
[21:13] Speaker 5: Ah, Joe, you've got a certain tone in your voice.
[21:18] Speaker 2: Yeah, could you be falling for this?
[21:20] Speaker 3: Chicken.
[21:21] Speaker 4: I don't even know her.
[21:22] Speaker 5: The ones you don't know, the most dangerous kind.
[21:25] Speaker 4: And look the way it is now. She just vanished
[21:27] Speaker 4: from the face of the earth. No motive, no clue,
[21:29] Speaker 4: nothing that's bad.
[21:32] Speaker 5: I could get a young romantic god like yourself, all
[21:35] Speaker 5: bothered and curious.
[21:36] Speaker 4: Moms. Now, you hear a lot of things in a
[21:38] Speaker 4: place like.
[21:39] Speaker 3: This, sure, but what I hear stays here?
[21:43] Speaker 4: Is there a rumble on this?
[21:45] Speaker 3: I haven't heard anything, Joe.
[21:47] Speaker 4: I don't think anybody grabbed her off the street.
[21:50] Speaker 2: You never can tell.
[21:53] Speaker 3: I'll listen, Joe.
[21:55] Speaker 5: It's against my principles, but I'll stick my ear up.
[21:58] Speaker 5: You know why, because I'm a sucker for romance.
[22:02] Speaker 4: I cut it out, will you.
[22:04] Speaker 5: I can see you got a thing for this girl.
[22:07] Speaker 5: Can't say as I blame you.
[22:08] Speaker 4: I'm only doing my job, you know. I tell you
[22:11] Speaker 4: what scares me. Yeah, she's a swimmer. She's reaching for
[22:16] Speaker 4: the big time. She has to get known, she has
[22:18] Speaker 4: to compete. She's been traveling to meets in Canada and
[22:22] Speaker 4: Mexico all over.
[22:24] Speaker 2: So do I have to spell it out for you?
[22:26] Speaker 2: Maybe she's been caught up in some smuggling. The pros
[22:28] Speaker 2: have been known to use kids like her.
[22:31] Speaker 5: Ah, you really must have fallen in love with her.
[22:34] Speaker 4: Why do you insist that I'm in love with her?
[22:37] Speaker 5: Well, look me straight in the eye and say, no,
[22:40] Speaker 5: I'm not in love with her.
[22:41] Speaker 2: No, don't be silly.
[22:42] Speaker 5: Oh that's how it is with some of you cops.
[22:45] Speaker 5: You like those nights of old, always rescuing fair maidens
[22:49] Speaker 5: in distress, and naturally you got to fall in love.
[22:52] Speaker 2: What else?
[22:53] Speaker 4: All right, all right, that's enough.
[22:54] Speaker 2: Ones. If you hear anything at all concerning this girl,
[22:56] Speaker 2: will you let me know?
[22:57] Speaker 3: Sure, and it won't cost you a thing. Uh, let
[23:01] Speaker 3: it be my witting presence.
[23:02] Speaker 4: Oh for crying out loud?
[23:12] Speaker 2: Tell her?
[23:14] Speaker 4: Oh yeah, Uh.
[23:15] Speaker 2: The parents of this girl, Margaret Truesdale, what do they want?
[23:19] Speaker 4: Inspector? Miracles, inspector.
[23:22] Speaker 2: They're phoning me every minute of the day and night.
[23:27] Speaker 2: She just disappeared, and I I I know, I know
[23:30] Speaker 2: what you're gonna say. Nobody just vanishes into thin air.
[23:33] Speaker 2: There has to be some clue. Look, I'm doing the
[23:37] Speaker 2: best I can I go.
[23:40] Speaker 4: I got nothing to go on. I'm making bricks without straw.
[23:45] Speaker 2: Okay, okay, yes, sir, yes sir. Just as soon as
[23:49] Speaker 2: something turns up.
[23:50] Speaker 4: Sure thing, see what could have happened to her? Any Hello,
[24:12] Speaker 4: a Sergeant Keller.
[24:13] Speaker 6: I know it's very late, I mean very early in
[24:16] Speaker 6: the morning.
[24:16] Speaker 4: Yeah, sure is.
[24:18] Speaker 6: I got your home number from your office. I said
[24:20] Speaker 6: it with an emergency. You have to come over here
[24:23] Speaker 6: right away.
[24:23] Speaker 2: Have you heard from Margie?
[24:25] Speaker 6: No, but I'm calling you because otherwise there's going to
[24:29] Speaker 6: be a lot of trouble and embarrassment. And can you
[24:32] Speaker 6: come over?
[24:33] Speaker 2: No, it's my wife and she has this idea, and
[24:37] Speaker 2: well you'd better talk to her.
[24:44] Speaker 3: Sergeant, I know what happened to my daughter.
[24:46] Speaker 2: You do.
[24:47] Speaker 5: It's a wonder it didn't occur to you. After all,
[24:49] Speaker 5: you're a professional, and it's so simple.
[24:52] Speaker 3: She's been kidnapped.
[24:53] Speaker 4: Missus Tuesday or we've been through this already. There's been
[24:56] Speaker 4: no note. You are not wealthy people.
[24:58] Speaker 3: But she was not kidnapped for money.
[25:00] Speaker 5: She was kidnapped by one or another of the Iron
[25:03] Speaker 5: Curtain countries.
[25:04] Speaker 3: Don't you understand.
[25:05] Speaker 4: Oh well, no, she's a threat.
[25:08] Speaker 5: Those countries take these competitions seriously. They're doing this to
[25:13] Speaker 5: keep her out of the games. Oh you don't believe it.
[25:18] Speaker 4: I was pretty far fast.
[25:19] Speaker 5: You're a police officer, and you have connections with the FBI, yes,
[25:22] Speaker 5: and you're coordinated with the CIA.
[25:25] Speaker 4: Not that I know of.
[25:25] Speaker 3: You get to work on this immediately or.
[25:28] Speaker 5: You will force me to get in touch with my
[25:30] Speaker 5: congressman and my senator.
[25:32] Speaker 2: No, Molly, it's awfully late. Why don't you get to bed.
[25:35] Speaker 3: Don't think you can fluff me off.
[25:36] Speaker 2: Nobody's got that idea. As the sergeant is going to
[25:39] Speaker 2: notify all the necessary authorities, you get all the wheels
[25:43] Speaker 2: in motion.
[25:43] Speaker 5: Once the government steps in, they won't dare to harm her.
[25:46] Speaker 2: You look awfully tired.
[25:49] Speaker 3: Yes, yes i am. I'm very very tired.
[25:56] Speaker 5: But sergeant, you do believe I've given you a logic
[25:59] Speaker 5: collection explanation.
[26:00] Speaker 4: Well, it does deserve thinking.
[26:02] Speaker 3: About, and you'll start what you like to call the routine.
[26:06] Speaker 4: Get on it right away.
[26:10] Speaker 5: Now I can go to bed. Did will you show
[26:15] Speaker 5: the sergeant out?
[26:16] Speaker 2: Why? Sure, thing, Bobby, good night, Good night, missus Treusdale.
[26:22] Speaker 2: I had to call you, otherwise she'd be phoning the
[26:26] Speaker 2: President of the United States. Yeah, yeah, okay, And besides,
[26:30] Speaker 2: who says she has to be off base? Crazy things
[26:34] Speaker 2: happened today?
[26:35] Speaker 4: Yeah?
[26:35] Speaker 2: Sure, sure? Well, good night, mister Trusdale. Don't go now,
[26:40] Speaker 2: it's late and my day starts early. I know what
[26:44] Speaker 2: you must think of me and my wife. You you
[26:48] Speaker 2: don't care for us.
[26:49] Speaker 4: Now, why do you say that?
[26:51] Speaker 2: Well, I I guess we come over like like stage parents,
[26:56] Speaker 2: you know, the kind of push their kids toward a career.
[26:58] Speaker 4: Well, isn't that what you did?
[27:00] Speaker 1: Know?
[27:00] Speaker 4: This whole training routine was her idea?
[27:03] Speaker 2: Yes, I remember you said she decided she should go
[27:06] Speaker 2: into the Olympics, but she did without any help from
[27:09] Speaker 2: you or missus Truesdale. Oh, we approved, but the idea
[27:14] Speaker 2: was hers. Is there any chance she might have suggested
[27:16] Speaker 2: it to win your approval?
[27:19] Speaker 1: No?
[27:19] Speaker 2: If she were to appear right now and say, mom, dad,
[27:22] Speaker 2: I want to throw the whole thing over, what would
[27:24] Speaker 2: you say to her? Impossible?
[27:26] Speaker 4: Impossible for her to say that.
[27:27] Speaker 2: Well, impossible to think she'd even want to. All right, Oh,
[27:34] Speaker 2: do you mind if I have a look at her room.
[27:38] Speaker 2: I don't know, Maybe I can find something. Oh, I
[27:42] Speaker 2: want to know this girl better. Maybe there's something in
[27:44] Speaker 2: the room. I too. Here, see everything just as she
[27:51] Speaker 2: left it.
[27:55] Speaker 4: She was very neat.
[27:57] Speaker 2: I hope we haven't touched a thing. See in the
[28:00] Speaker 2: waste basket, we haven't even emptied it. Just a crumpled
[28:05] Speaker 2: piece of paper here, it's going to stay right there.
[28:09] Speaker 2: M funny. It's probably the last thing she ever wrote. Two?
[28:15] Speaker 4: What is it?
[28:17] Speaker 2: Nothing? Nothing at all? Test the name? The name? Whose
[28:22] Speaker 2: nobody's name that I know of? What's the name Wilson?
[28:26] Speaker 2: We don't even know anyone named Wilson.
[28:28] Speaker 4: Wilson.
[28:29] Speaker 2: Yeah, will Helmina Wilson.
[28:32] Speaker 4: Could I see that?
[28:33] Speaker 2: What far?
[28:34] Speaker 1: No?
[28:35] Speaker 2: All right? Yeah, but I want it back, Will Helmina Wilson.
[28:43] Speaker 2: Is this your daughter's handwriting?
[28:45] Speaker 4: Of course? M. She writes will Helmina Wilson, as if
[28:49] Speaker 4: it's a signature. She's written it four or five or
[28:51] Speaker 4: six times, as if she were practicing how to sign it. Why.
[28:56] Speaker 2: I can't imagine, Will Helmina Wilson? Have you ever heard
[29:01] Speaker 2: that name in any connection? Now, wait a minute, Maybe
[29:08] Speaker 2: I have where where I heard it somewhere before. Maybe
[29:15] Speaker 2: one that sounds an awful lot like it. He's heard
[29:29] Speaker 2: one that's very close to it, and so have you.
[29:32] Speaker 2: It's a name that's fraught with significance, as they say,
[29:36] Speaker 2: provided you know just how to look at it. Stop
[29:40] Speaker 2: for a minute, think for a minute, and it should
[29:43] Speaker 2: all fall into place, and if it doesn't, we'll take
[29:47] Speaker 2: care of it. Next three. What's in a name? Asked
[30:03] Speaker 2: mister Shakespeare, That which we call a rose by any
[30:07] Speaker 2: other name would smell as sweet and so forth. While
[30:11] Speaker 2: we hate to differ with the immortal Bard, we must
[30:13] Speaker 2: quarrel with his premise everything is in a name? And
[30:18] Speaker 2: who can say that the rose doesn't smell sweeter precisely
[30:21] Speaker 2: because it's called a rose? The fact is where the
[30:26] Speaker 2: captives of our own propaganda.
[30:29] Speaker 4: Will Helmina Wilson. You're sure this name means nothing to you,
[30:34] Speaker 4: mister trusdown Nothing at all, missus Trusdowne, Well, I asked her.
[30:39] Speaker 2: She doesn't know either.
[30:40] Speaker 4: All right? And where did I hear it? I'm sorry
[30:50] Speaker 4: to bother you, mister Sparta.
[30:51] Speaker 2: I'm glad to be of help. I'm can I tell you.
[30:54] Speaker 4: The name will help? Mina Wilson? Is that familiar?
[30:57] Speaker 2: Will Helmina Wilson?
[31:00] Speaker 4: Who is she?
[31:01] Speaker 2: Oh?
[31:02] Speaker 4: She isn't anybody, but she has to be somebody.
[31:05] Speaker 2: Noo, will help me? No Wilson is a rhythm?
[31:08] Speaker 4: Oh what.
[31:10] Speaker 2: She's Margie's rhythm? While she swims, Margie keeps saying, will
[31:15] Speaker 2: help me? No Wilson will help me, No, Wilson and
[31:19] Speaker 2: oh it's a simple six feet rhythm.
[31:24] Speaker 4: Da da see it helps.
[31:27] Speaker 2: So set up a little chant like that.
[31:32] Speaker 4: That's all will Helmina Wilson is.
[31:35] Speaker 2: Why what do you think it was?
[31:42] Speaker 5: Well, here's a handsome young police officer.
[31:47] Speaker 2: Like you need a drink, I do.
[31:49] Speaker 4: Which is why I'm not going to have one.
[31:51] Speaker 5: Well, tell old moms, what's the problem.
[31:54] Speaker 4: I just stop buying in case you may have heard something.
[31:57] Speaker 3: About who oh yeah, chick.
[32:00] Speaker 2: Hey, how many times I have to tell you there's
[32:02] Speaker 2: nothing there?
[32:03] Speaker 5: If there was nothing there, you do only have to
[32:05] Speaker 5: tell me once.
[32:06] Speaker 4: Well what do you hear?
[32:07] Speaker 3: Not a whisper?
[32:08] Speaker 4: See, somebody has to know something. Oh sure, I just
[32:12] Speaker 4: can't find a handle on this case.
[32:13] Speaker 3: Oh poor Joe.
[32:15] Speaker 5: Tell me, is this the kind of girl you've been
[32:17] Speaker 5: looking for all your life?
[32:19] Speaker 2: All right, all right, mom, she's an interesting girl. Good.
[32:23] Speaker 5: We finally got that out in the open.
[32:25] Speaker 2: Now you can go to work.
[32:26] Speaker 4: I've been working without let up since the case came in.
[32:28] Speaker 5: Working, yeah, but thinking No, I don't follow Joe. When
[32:35] Speaker 5: I saw you for the first time, you know what
[32:37] Speaker 5: I said to myself, I said that one's going to
[32:39] Speaker 5: be a smart cup once he sets down, you got
[32:44] Speaker 5: this dame on the brain.
[32:45] Speaker 4: Look, we don't have to keep talking about that aspect
[32:48] Speaker 4: of it.
[32:48] Speaker 5: But I suppose it was an old lady that was
[32:50] Speaker 5: missing or a guy.
[32:52] Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, a guy.
[32:53] Speaker 2: It'd be even better.
[32:54] Speaker 3: Better for what better to prove my point?
[32:56] Speaker 4: So far? You haven't made one, Joe.
[33:00] Speaker 3: Just pretend you're not in love with it?
[33:02] Speaker 4: Who says I am? Okay, okay, let it go.
[33:06] Speaker 5: Guys like you who are already over thirty, you were
[33:09] Speaker 5: always afraid of getting married. Hey, listen, so you make
[33:12] Speaker 5: up excuses to get up this ideal or some dane
[33:16] Speaker 5: that's just gorgeous but out of reach.
[33:18] Speaker 4: See, moms, I've seen all those moving pictures too.
[33:21] Speaker 5: You know where do you think life gets its ideas
[33:24] Speaker 5: from the movie.
[33:25] Speaker 2: I'm going at this case the same way I tackle
[33:28] Speaker 2: every other.
[33:28] Speaker 5: That's what you say, But just take a deep breath
[33:32] Speaker 5: and think think about it from every angle.
[33:35] Speaker 4: I am good.
[33:37] Speaker 5: Now ask yourself the question you should have asked the
[33:40] Speaker 5: very first night.
[33:42] Speaker 2: Am I being had?
[33:46] Speaker 3: Think about it?
[33:46] Speaker 2: Joe?
[33:48] Speaker 3: Are you being had? Do you have any news? Sergeant?
[33:58] Speaker 4: I may have?
[33:59] Speaker 3: What does that mean? Sid? What did he say?
[34:01] Speaker 2: As argent? Oh? What do you have to tell us.
[34:04] Speaker 2: I'm thinking about what you told me, and all rests
[34:08] Speaker 2: on the assumption that your daughter could disappear on a crowded,
[34:11] Speaker 2: well lighted street.
[34:13] Speaker 3: Assumption, sid, he said, assumption.
[34:16] Speaker 2: I heard what he said. I'm afraid it didn't work.
[34:18] Speaker 4: The only way she could disappear was for.
[34:20] Speaker 2: You to arrange a place for her to go to. No,
[34:23] Speaker 2: now you'd better listen to me. At first, I had
[34:26] Speaker 2: the idea maybe she might have gotten into a little jam.
[34:30] Speaker 2: She went swimming meets in Canada and Mexico.
[34:32] Speaker 4: Maybe she carried some pot for somebody, and maybe something
[34:35] Speaker 4: a little stronger.
[34:36] Speaker 2: That's a lie.
[34:37] Speaker 4: Actually, I didn't believe it myself.
[34:38] Speaker 3: Then what are you trying to imply?
[34:40] Speaker 2: I think it's all a publicity stunt, but it's gone sour.
[34:44] Speaker 3: How dare you?
[34:46] Speaker 5: Sid, coldest man, superior officer, whoever he is.
[34:49] Speaker 2: I'll give you his name and the phone number myself,
[34:52] Speaker 2: but you'd better hear the rest of it first. Now,
[34:55] Speaker 2: the stakes are tremendous. I should have realized that in
[34:57] Speaker 2: the beginning the Olympics. They become a fantastic media event.
[35:02] Speaker 2: The winners get more than the old Laurel wreath, even
[35:04] Speaker 2: more than the gold medal I'll hold at the minute
[35:07] Speaker 2: talk time. You have no right your old swimmer disappears.
[35:10] Speaker 2: That will be the headline, wouldn't it? When I could
[35:12] Speaker 2: have been? But all you got was a couple of
[35:15] Speaker 2: lines on page seventeen and nothing to speak of on
[35:18] Speaker 2: the air. The media didn't bite, or maybe you didn't
[35:21] Speaker 2: know how to promote it. You don't understand she's missing
[35:25] Speaker 2: when you need it was an experienced inventive publicity guy.
[35:28] Speaker 4: He might have pulled it off.
[35:29] Speaker 3: It isn't true.
[35:30] Speaker 2: You have to keep it alive, so you feed me
[35:32] Speaker 2: little things like this iron curtain plot.
[35:34] Speaker 3: It could be true, and.
[35:36] Speaker 2: Then you try to fob off this name at me,
[35:38] Speaker 2: this will Helmina Wilson. Why did you pretend you didn't
[35:41] Speaker 2: know what it was, mister Truesday, Well, I don't have
[35:44] Speaker 2: the pander's.
[35:44] Speaker 5: Idea, Red, Who is Willowmina Wilson?
[35:48] Speaker 2: Didn't you think I check it out with Dick Sparter.
[35:50] Speaker 2: I mean you're trying to tell me you actually don't
[35:52] Speaker 2: know that will Helmina.
[35:54] Speaker 4: Wilson is the name, she says to herself while she's swimming.
[35:57] Speaker 3: I never heard of it.
[35:58] Speaker 4: Where is she.
[35:59] Speaker 2: We don't know she disappeared.
[36:01] Speaker 4: You knowingly mislead the police.
[36:03] Speaker 3: We haven't missed the truth.
[36:05] Speaker 4: Wait, will Helmina Wilson. I just remembered, I just remembered.
[36:16] Speaker 5: Has there been any word of March Tuesday or Sergeant?
[36:20] Speaker 4: I know, miss Stacy.
[36:21] Speaker 2: I just came by the library to ask a question,
[36:24] Speaker 2: and you said she liked to read a book she
[36:27] Speaker 2: kept renewing.
[36:28] Speaker 4: Would you tell me the name of it again?
[36:30] Speaker 5: Oh, William Wilson and other stories by Edgar Allan Poe.
[36:35] Speaker 2: William Wilson, Yes, I guess I made a mistake. Funny,
[36:39] Speaker 2: I thought it was Wilhelmina Wilson.
[36:42] Speaker 3: Well that's close.
[36:43] Speaker 5: Actually, Wilhelmina is the feminine form of William.
[36:47] Speaker 2: Yes, well, Helmina Wilson. I wonder that story? Do you
[36:53] Speaker 2: do you suppose I could read it?
[36:55] Speaker 5: Oh?
[36:56] Speaker 3: I serdaenly wait here.
[37:00] Speaker 2: A yes, Mss Wilhelmina Wilson. Yes, yes, And you dyed
[37:16] Speaker 2: your hair. You changed your makeup.
[37:18] Speaker 4: M Instead of wearing biges and browns, I see you've
[37:21] Speaker 4: gone in for blues and grays. It does give you
[37:25] Speaker 4: a different look.
[37:27] Speaker 3: Who are you?
[37:28] Speaker 4: Oh? Sorry, I'm a police detective. Sergeant Joe Keller, May I,
[37:31] Speaker 4: may I come in? Why I wanna talk to you
[37:35] Speaker 4: about Margaret Truesdale.
[37:39] Speaker 3: Uh, alright, what what do you want to know?
[37:48] Speaker 4: First?
[37:48] Speaker 2: I'd I'd like to know if you'll marry me, y,
[37:52] Speaker 2: for we'll not right away, we'd have to get to
[37:54] Speaker 2: know each other better.
[37:55] Speaker 4: Or although I know all about you already.
[37:59] Speaker 3: What do you know about me?
[38:01] Speaker 4: Start with a girl just in her teens, father dies
[38:04] Speaker 4: and mother remarries.
[38:06] Speaker 2: Will the stepfather accept her? And then the mother dies
[38:08] Speaker 2: and the stepfather remarries. Will the strange new woman accept
[38:12] Speaker 2: her as a daughter?
[38:13] Speaker 3: Why do you want me to relive all this?
[38:15] Speaker 4: She thinks she's a very unattractive girl.
[38:18] Speaker 3: Oh I was. I was pale and skinny, always sitch.
[38:22] Speaker 2: So they bring you to a friend, Dick Sparta, a
[38:26] Speaker 2: swimming coach, and you work out every day.
[38:28] Speaker 3: Yes, I did, hour after hour, and.
[38:31] Speaker 4: It changes you.
[38:33] Speaker 2: It also becomes obvious to everyone that you could be
[38:36] Speaker 2: a great swimmer. Yes, and everybody begins to count the money,
[38:40] Speaker 2: taste the glory.
[38:41] Speaker 3: Yes, at first Sid and Molly were only thinking of me.
[38:46] Speaker 5: Later the thing just overpowered and blew their perspectives crazy.
[38:51] Speaker 5: At first, I was so happy because finally I could
[38:54] Speaker 5: do something.
[38:55] Speaker 3: To please them, repay them for all they did for me.
[38:58] Speaker 5: You were a good little girl, yes, but after a
[39:02] Speaker 5: while it became torture. Every stroke was agony, every lap
[39:07] Speaker 5: was I don't want to say, oh, percatory.
[39:13] Speaker 2: I understand, But couldn't you face them, couldn't you say, look, Mom,
[39:17] Speaker 2: look Dad?
[39:18] Speaker 5: I was scared. I was still very insecure. Besides, I
[39:23] Speaker 5: told you they had changed.
[39:26] Speaker 2: Now.
[39:26] Speaker 5: All they could talk about was how rich, how famous
[39:28] Speaker 5: we would become, the fantastic.
[39:30] Speaker 3: Things we could do.
[39:31] Speaker 4: And then you read that story William Wilson, about a
[39:36] Speaker 4: man who has another self.
[39:38] Speaker 3: Yes, another self.
[39:42] Speaker 5: That was what I needed, and so inside me I
[39:46] Speaker 5: created Wilhelmina Wilson. Inside I was Wilhelmina Wilson. Every time
[39:52] Speaker 5: I swam, I would say will Helmina Wilson. Oh, I
[39:58] Speaker 5: wanted to run away, just disappear.
[40:02] Speaker 3: But where could I go? How would I live? All
[40:05] Speaker 3: I ever learned to do was swim.
[40:07] Speaker 4: Couldn't you study something?
[40:09] Speaker 5: Oh?
[40:09] Speaker 2: Not?
[40:10] Speaker 5: After the kind of day I put in a matter
[40:13] Speaker 5: of fact, I wanted to take a secretarial course. But
[40:16] Speaker 5: Sit and Molly both jumped on me. What do you
[40:18] Speaker 5: need that for you'll never use it. You're going to
[40:20] Speaker 5: be rich.
[40:22] Speaker 3: You know what I did.
[40:24] Speaker 5: I tried to raise money by entering contests under the
[40:28] Speaker 5: name of wilhelm Me and to Wilson. I never won anything,
[40:31] Speaker 5: anything at all.
[40:33] Speaker 4: Until dear Yeah, I know.
[40:36] Speaker 5: I bought a fifty cent lottery ticket in the name
[40:38] Speaker 5: of Wilhelmina Wilson, and that did it. Can you imagine
[40:42] Speaker 5: the minute I saw that winning number.
[40:44] Speaker 2: I took this apartment and that's how I found you.
[40:47] Speaker 5: Twenty five thousand dollars. It can give me a start.
[40:51] Speaker 2: Where does this leave me? Your parents reported you as
[40:54] Speaker 2: a missing person. I'm a police officer.
[40:57] Speaker 4: I found you.
[40:57] Speaker 3: I can't go home. Do you know why. I just
[41:03] Speaker 3: can't swim any more. I can't take the pressure.
[41:05] Speaker 5: I'm out of it. That's going to break their hearts.
[41:09] Speaker 4: They're broken hearted now, but this.
[41:11] Speaker 5: Way they'll still have their dreams that I could have
[41:14] Speaker 5: been the greatest swimmer in the world.
[41:17] Speaker 2: Oh, I can't go back, Yes you can.
[41:20] Speaker 5: No, I'm no longer scared. Little Margie Treusdale. And they
[41:27] Speaker 5: wouldn't understand Wilhelmina Wilson.
[41:30] Speaker 3: They would never forgive.
[41:31] Speaker 5: Her for for wasting that chance of a lifetime.
[41:35] Speaker 4: Do you know who they could understand, forgive and accept?
[41:39] Speaker 3: Who?
[41:40] Speaker 4: Missus? Joseph Keller?
[41:43] Speaker 3: Who she?
[41:44] Speaker 4: She would be my wife?
[41:45] Speaker 3: But I don't know.
[41:47] Speaker 4: You don't you want to get to know me?
[41:50] Speaker 3: Well, I don't know. I suppose I could.
[41:54] Speaker 2: By that time the Olympic trials will be over.
[41:57] Speaker 3: They'll never forgive me.
[41:59] Speaker 2: Sure will once we make it very clear that you
[42:04] Speaker 2: forgive them. I would assume that after a suitable passage
[42:20] Speaker 2: of time, everyone in this particular story forgave everybody else,
[42:25] Speaker 2: although why and for what is not exactly crystal clear.
[42:30] Speaker 2: After all, we do our best to reach a goal,
