[0:00] Speaker 1: The CBS Radio Mystery Theater presents.
[0:20] Speaker 2: Come in.
[0:22] Speaker 3: Welcome.
[0:24] Speaker 4: I'm e. G. Marshall.
[0:26] Speaker 1: Welcome to the sound of suspense. To the cheer you
[0:30] Speaker 1: can hear for the next fifty two minutes. I shall
[0:34] Speaker 1: be your guide on a journey over a strange to rain.
[0:38] Speaker 1: Some people find their names printed in the most unusual places.
[0:43] Speaker 1: Let me tell you about a man who is convinced
[0:46] Speaker 1: that his was written on a bullet.
[0:52] Speaker 3: Paul, give the password.
[0:54] Speaker 2: It's me Jerry, It's me to shoot Paul's Jerry is Paul.
[1:02] Speaker 4: Paul your ted? How can you as Jerry? But I
[1:09] Speaker 4: shouldn't be.
[1:11] Speaker 2: I took your bullet.
[1:22] Speaker 1: Our mystery drama The Bullet was written especially for the
[1:26] Speaker 1: CBS Radio Mystery Theater by Sam Dan and stars Larry Haynes.
[1:33] Speaker 1: I shall be back shortly with that one. It's a
[1:49] Speaker 1: quiet little bar Patty Noonan's, and Jerry Price stops there
[1:54] Speaker 1: every evening on his.
[1:55] Speaker 3: Way home from work.
[1:58] Speaker 1: He's not looking for anything special in the way of
[2:00] Speaker 1: atmosphere adventure, companionship, and he has no intention of getting drunk,
[2:07] Speaker 1: just a couple of beers, perhaps to bridge a busy day,
[2:11] Speaker 1: to ease the fatigue the strain on his nerves. In
[2:15] Speaker 1: the comfortable half light of Paddy Nunan's, the world outside
[2:19] Speaker 1: becomes vague distant, especially when old man o'rour is holding forth.
[2:26] Speaker 5: And he lay there, his head against the barricade, and
[2:32] Speaker 5: the blood from him fallen soft to pull the pavements.
[2:36] Speaker 5: I looked in his face and I could see his
[2:38] Speaker 5: death was upon him. Tis a bitter thing, I said
[2:43] Speaker 5: to die at seventeen. And for a moment his darkening
[2:48] Speaker 5: eyes held mine, and with his last strength he said.
[2:54] Speaker 6: Tis a sweet thing to die for Ireland.
[2:58] Speaker 3: Sweet indeed, mister k and it calls for one on
[3:02] Speaker 3: the house. I thank you, Patty, I see Jerry Price.
[3:06] Speaker 3: Excuse me, good evening, Jerry, Hi, I didn't notice you
[3:11] Speaker 3: come in.
[3:11] Speaker 7: Well, when old man all Rooks inform, you don't see anybody, Patty.
[3:15] Speaker 4: The old man there, he carries.
[3:16] Speaker 3: His I know I carry mine. Do you ever think
[3:19] Speaker 3: of yours? Jerry?
[3:20] Speaker 4: No?
[3:20] Speaker 7: No, never, never, nope. But they I came home from Vietnam.
[3:25] Speaker 7: I put away the uniform. I also put away everything
[3:27] Speaker 7: that went with at the army the war. Like a
[3:30] Speaker 7: snake sheds his skin. All the past has gone, Patty.
[3:34] Speaker 3: It's dead.
[3:34] Speaker 4: So you forget it, you go onto other things.
[3:36] Speaker 3: Hey, what's everybody drinking? It's round on me? Set him up, Patty,
[3:41] Speaker 3: mister Edward Clark himself. And what's the occasion.
[3:44] Speaker 7: Yeah, I got a little announcement. Guess what the old
[3:47] Speaker 7: lady tells me this morning? Number ten is on his way.
[3:50] Speaker 3: Ooh, with that event around, must beyond the house, mister clik.
[3:54] Speaker 7: Just a quick one, Patty, Hey, I got the truck outside.
[3:56] Speaker 4: What are you hoping for this time? That boy or girl?
[3:58] Speaker 7: I'll see what I got now at four boys and
[4:01] Speaker 7: five no, no, no, I got five boys who can
[4:06] Speaker 7: keep them straight. All I know is I'm always tripping
[4:09] Speaker 7: over somebody. Eh, ten kids in twelve years, and you
[4:14] Speaker 7: can't tell me it isn't exciting to hear there's going
[4:16] Speaker 7: to be a new baby. Oh yeah, yeah, I know
[4:19] Speaker 7: it's going to be a kid will wet its pants
[4:21] Speaker 7: and keep me up half of the night. That's another
[4:23] Speaker 7: mileth I gotta feed. Yeah, well, guys, I gotta ride.
[4:27] Speaker 7: I'll see you tomorrow, and I betty it's funny people
[4:32] Speaker 7: who don't want kids, can't stand kids, can't afford them,
[4:35] Speaker 7: can't raise them. They can help getting kids. Whereas oh, well, because.
[4:43] Speaker 4: There's justice and any justice in this world.
[4:45] Speaker 3: And there may be no justice, Jerry, but there's always hope.
[4:49] Speaker 7: How long have you been married? Right after I get
[4:51] Speaker 7: out of the army, it'll be nine years.
[4:53] Speaker 3: The failures come in here and they were married fifteen
[4:56] Speaker 3: years before they had their.
[4:57] Speaker 7: First am I really out of the arm me nine years?
[5:02] Speaker 7: Tell petty, you're an old philosopher. Where does it go?
[5:04] Speaker 4: Huh?
[5:04] Speaker 3: Down the hatch and try another?
[5:07] Speaker 7: Don't mind if I do? Oh wait on a paying
[5:12] Speaker 7: customer first? Where I fell standing at the end of
[5:18] Speaker 7: the bar. What are you saying, Jerry? There's nobody standing
[5:22] Speaker 7: at the end in the brown hat in a rink
[5:24] Speaker 7: cort Now, Jerry, what are you saying?
[5:29] Speaker 4: That's tell me?
[5:32] Speaker 3: What's the matter, Jerry, Jerry, listen to me. There's no
[5:35] Speaker 3: way he was just standing here.
[5:39] Speaker 4: Where'd he go? Where is he?
[5:42] Speaker 3: Jerry? Where is who?
[5:44] Speaker 4: Are you all right? Jerry?
[5:46] Speaker 3: Yah?
[5:47] Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I'm all right. But I saw who oh.
[5:54] Speaker 3: Guy, I was in the army with the two of
[5:57] Speaker 3: you were your clothes? It was my well when was
[6:01] Speaker 3: the last time he saw him in person? But he
[6:05] Speaker 3: was killed? Have you have you ever seen him again?
[6:11] Speaker 3: Like you thought you did just no, no, no, this
[6:14] Speaker 3: is the first time. Well, maybe you need to rest Jerry. Harry,
[6:17] Speaker 3: why now, why tonight after all these years? Well, you see,
[6:20] Speaker 3: you saw him last night he died in battle. Well,
[6:24] Speaker 3: the sight of him dead must have stayed with you always.
[6:27] Speaker 3: It's not how I just saw him, Paddy. He wasn't
[6:29] Speaker 3: in uniform. He was in civilian clause. You might have
[6:33] Speaker 3: pictured him as he looked at the happier. I never
[6:35] Speaker 3: saw him in civilian class.
[6:38] Speaker 4: We met in the army, and Patty, I didn't see
[6:43] Speaker 4: him as he was.
[6:43] Speaker 7: Then we were both kids. About twenty, I saw him
[6:47] Speaker 7: the way he'd looked today. About thirty, his face was
[6:51] Speaker 7: more mature.
[6:52] Speaker 3: Jerry, are you sure he's dead?
[6:55] Speaker 4: He is dead, Paddy, I just saw him. I know
[6:59] Speaker 4: I saw him.
[7:00] Speaker 8: Ah, Jerry, it's after midnight.
[7:14] Speaker 7: Oh I'm not finished, Honey. I have to clean up
[7:17] Speaker 7: these reports.
[7:18] Speaker 4: March.
[7:19] Speaker 8: Honey. A new rule has just been passed in this house.
[7:22] Speaker 8: All PaperWorks shall be done in the daytime.
[7:25] Speaker 4: March. I have to call on customers. Be reasonable, huh Am.
[7:28] Speaker 8: I the kind of wife who makes idle criticism, no, indeed,
[7:33] Speaker 8: constructive suggestions. That's my motto. Northeast distributors can solve all
[7:37] Speaker 8: your paperwork problems by hiring a girl.
[7:40] Speaker 4: Honey, I'm lucky to have the job.
[7:42] Speaker 8: No, Jerry, you're not lucky.
[7:45] Speaker 9: They're lucky.
[7:47] Speaker 8: Everybody knows you're a terrific salesman. But you could get
[7:50] Speaker 8: another job tomorrow, more money, less headed.
[7:53] Speaker 4: I mean, I couldn't walk out on joke killer.
[7:55] Speaker 8: Why not.
[7:56] Speaker 7: Well, I'll never forget what that man did for me.
[7:59] Speaker 7: I came home from the army, a kid with no experience.
[8:01] Speaker 7: I needed a job. He took a chance with me.
[8:03] Speaker 7: Now he needs me.
[8:06] Speaker 8: Well, I'm just worried about your Cherry. You look so
[8:10] Speaker 8: tired all the time.
[8:11] Speaker 4: I'm in great sheep.
[8:13] Speaker 8: Will you go see Doc Steiner I did today. Oh, well,
[8:18] Speaker 8: it's about time you needed a check up.
[8:22] Speaker 4: I didn't just go for the check up, honey, I
[8:25] Speaker 4: went for the for the other thing.
[8:28] Speaker 7: Cherry, Well, he said, some people men, well they're okay
[8:34] Speaker 7: in every way, but it just doesn't work out for him.
[8:37] Speaker 3: Cherry.
[8:38] Speaker 8: It's all right.
[8:39] Speaker 4: No, no, no, honey, it's all my fault.
[8:41] Speaker 10: Honey.
[8:42] Speaker 7: It's well, it's just unlikely. There can never be any kids,
[8:49] Speaker 7: he said. Unlikely. What he meant was impossible.
[8:52] Speaker 8: We've got each other.
[8:54] Speaker 4: Yeah, if only you didn't want a child so badly.
[8:58] Speaker 8: Now will definitely think about adopting. Okay, okay, sometimes that
[9:05] Speaker 8: works out even better. Come on, honey, let me see
[9:10] Speaker 8: you smile.
[9:12] Speaker 4: Much much much. I don't know what i'd do without you.
[9:16] Speaker 8: Oh, that makes us even I don't know what i'd
[9:20] Speaker 8: do without you.
[9:22] Speaker 4: Come on, get to bed you. I'll just have a cigarette.
[9:27] Speaker 8: I mean, why don't you turn on the music to
[9:29] Speaker 8: make sure you don't try to sneak in some work.
[9:33] Speaker 8: I know you can't concentrate music though.
[9:35] Speaker 7: I'll just be a couple of minutes, Honey.
[9:48] Speaker 11: Paul, let's hear that pathword, Paul, is that you? Jerry?
[9:53] Speaker 2: He climb down the hole. Make yourself at home.
[9:58] Speaker 4: Man, I'm so beat. I can't. Can we under the password?
[10:01] Speaker 2: Hats all right? I don't even know what it is.
[10:03] Speaker 4: I got a cigarette?
[10:05] Speaker 2: What they want back at the CP Jerry patrol? You're going, Yeah,
[10:11] Speaker 2: you went out yesterday.
[10:12] Speaker 4: Well maybe I better write to my congressman.
[10:13] Speaker 2: Huh, I don't have any more cigarettes. Yeah, finish this.
[10:16] Speaker 4: One, Paul, Paul, I don't know if I can out again.
[10:21] Speaker 7: We're being relieved. Tomorrow we will promised to rest. I
[10:23] Speaker 7: just don't know if I can go out again.
[10:25] Speaker 2: But you ain't going out, Jerry. Didn't you hear I'm going?
[10:29] Speaker 4: Oh no, no, I'll say you.
[10:30] Speaker 2: And I made a tree doll.
[10:32] Speaker 3: Paul.
[10:32] Speaker 4: I can't let some other guy do.
[10:34] Speaker 2: I'm not some other guy. I'm your buddy. What's a
[10:39] Speaker 2: mat at?
[10:39] Speaker 3: Jerry?
[10:40] Speaker 2: You never did it for me? Can I have a
[10:53] Speaker 2: drag on that?
[10:54] Speaker 4: But Jerry, call, you're alive.
[10:58] Speaker 2: I'm alive, Jerry. I'm here with you in your living.
[11:03] Speaker 4: You know you can't be here.
[11:05] Speaker 7: I went out afterward. I found your body. I carried
[11:07] Speaker 7: it back. Maybe it wasn't you, it was me, but
[11:11] Speaker 7: you were dead. You were killed, Yes, Jerry, I was killed.
[11:16] Speaker 8: Jerry, will you turn that radio off and come to bed?
[11:19] Speaker 10: Marg he's here?
[11:21] Speaker 8: Who's here?
[11:22] Speaker 4: Can't you see him? Jerry?
[11:25] Speaker 8: I don't see anyone.
[11:27] Speaker 4: Paul. Why can't you see you?
[11:28] Speaker 3: She will?
[11:29] Speaker 4: They all will when later.
[11:33] Speaker 7: I have to go now, Jerry, No, no, Paul, Paul,
[11:37] Speaker 7: tell us think I'm crazy, Paul, Paul, he's gone.
[11:43] Speaker 4: He's gone.
[11:44] Speaker 8: Jerry, Honey, what's going on here?
[11:47] Speaker 4: He was here? He was here. Now you got to
[11:49] Speaker 4: believe that I'm not drunk and I'm not great.
[11:51] Speaker 8: I believe you. I believe you, Jerry now here, Just
[11:55] Speaker 8: sit down, don't do anything, don't say anything.
[12:14] Speaker 1: And we know who she's calling. But can a doctor
[12:17] Speaker 1: help what ails Jerry?
[12:20] Speaker 4: In a moment.
[12:21] Speaker 1: We'll return to Jerry in Marge and Paul when we listen.
[12:26] Speaker 4: To Act two.
[12:39] Speaker 1: And now act too of the bullet let, us trace
[12:44] Speaker 1: the path of the bullet. We have a worried Marge,
[12:48] Speaker 1: a concern Dr Steiner, and a distracted Jerry.
[12:52] Speaker 7: Tell me about this name, Paul. You called him, Jerry,
[12:55] Speaker 7: I said, we will buddies. Doctor that tell us it all.
[12:58] Speaker 8: Jerry, Please don't be so hostile. Doctor Stean is only trying.
[13:01] Speaker 4: To help your buddies.
[13:04] Speaker 7: You came back alive, and he didn't heal. There's an
[13:08] Speaker 7: extensive medical literature on the subject. Oh, I'm sure I'm
[13:12] Speaker 7: not being hostile.
[13:13] Speaker 4: March. I know I saw him, of course.
[13:15] Speaker 7: You saw him well finally, but that doesn't mean he
[13:18] Speaker 7: was there, is he?
[13:20] Speaker 4: Jerry.
[13:21] Speaker 7: The death of a wartime comrade remains an eternal reproach.
[13:25] Speaker 7: All who survive are sentenced forever to feelings of gil
[13:29] Speaker 7: no no doctor.
[13:30] Speaker 4: The wars are fought by kids, and Foxhall's.
[13:32] Speaker 7: The literature is written by doctors, and off of that
[13:34] Speaker 7: side a fair Jerry, I'm the authority on war doctor,
[13:37] Speaker 7: because I was a kid and a fox Hall and
[13:39] Speaker 7: I don't feel guilty about it about my buddy. You
[13:41] Speaker 7: don't know, Tell me why, Oh, you wouldn't believe it.
[13:47] Speaker 7: Try me, all right. You see, it is a bullet,
[13:53] Speaker 7: and it's designed especially for you. And if it's your bullet,
[13:58] Speaker 7: it'll find you no matter where you are. You can
[14:00] Speaker 7: evade that, you can't avoid it. It was meant for you.
[14:03] Speaker 7: It was meant to be you and a bullet. Both
[14:07] Speaker 7: of you were dust. Originally you were dust, because the
[14:10] Speaker 7: Bible says so. And the bullet was also just dust
[14:13] Speaker 7: in the ground. Well, that bullet was mined and refined
[14:17] Speaker 7: and cast into metal. It was shaped into a slug
[14:20] Speaker 7: and joined with a shell. It was one of billions
[14:22] Speaker 7: of bullets, but it was yours, all yours, and at
[14:25] Speaker 7: the right time, at the right time, there'd be a
[14:28] Speaker 7: tremendous explosion of gases in a narrow chamber, and a
[14:31] Speaker 7: bullet would be torn loose from the shell case and
[14:33] Speaker 7: spun around the grooves of a gun barrel and hurled
[14:35] Speaker 7: through space.
[14:37] Speaker 4: This is the bullet you don't hear.
[14:39] Speaker 7: You don't hear it, doctor, you don't hear it wine
[14:41] Speaker 7: past your ear, or ping off a rock or swack
[14:43] Speaker 7: against a tree. That's because it's your very own bullet.
[14:47] Speaker 7: It's coming to meet you, or you're going to need it.
[14:50] Speaker 7: It's been arranged, you see, It's an appointment that can
[14:53] Speaker 7: never be broken. The dust that had become the bullet
[14:56] Speaker 7: would encounter the dust that had become you, and while
[15:01] Speaker 7: after a while, both of you would become dust once
[15:03] Speaker 7: again and return to the ground, your original home.
[15:10] Speaker 4: Jerry, I know.
[15:11] Speaker 7: You're overworked, you're overwrought, you're overtired.
[15:14] Speaker 8: I keep telling him to slow down.
[15:16] Speaker 7: Okay, okay, I know I'm under a strain. I know
[15:19] Speaker 7: I'm working too hard. But what can I do? Jerry
[15:22] Speaker 7: trying to understand right now you're having what is popularly
[15:26] Speaker 7: known as a nervous breakdown. This alleged visitor from another world.
[15:32] Speaker 7: I say he's an illusion though. I say you have
[15:35] Speaker 7: subconscious feelings about him which you're not aware of, and
[15:39] Speaker 7: I say they burst through because of heavy pressure on
[15:41] Speaker 7: your nervous system. I know you'd say that proved me wrong.
[15:44] Speaker 7: How go away, get out from under rest a while, relaxed.
[16:01] Speaker 8: Oh, honey, this looks like a good spot. Do you
[16:04] Speaker 8: want to stop here in track for some.
[16:06] Speaker 4: This oh March? Uh, I think I'd like to go
[16:08] Speaker 4: back and play nine holes this afternoon. Great.
[16:11] Speaker 8: I need more practice with my irons.
[16:13] Speaker 7: Uh, honey, Honey, you know you've been getting a lot
[16:16] Speaker 7: of sun.
[16:17] Speaker 4: Maybe you better take it easy for a few hours. Huh.
[16:19] Speaker 8: And besides, you have an appointment with what's that name?
[16:23] Speaker 8: This gain appliances? See, Jerry, I wasn't sleeping when you
[16:28] Speaker 8: call that number this morning, March.
[16:30] Speaker 7: I've been good all month. I was just getting restless,
[16:32] Speaker 7: that's all. Look, there were a big chain down here.
[16:35] Speaker 7: If I can open them up, I'll justify the.
[16:37] Speaker 8: Trip, justify. Why do you have to justify anything? Isn't
[16:43] Speaker 8: your health important in that?
[16:45] Speaker 4: Honey? Joe Keller was very nice about it.
[16:47] Speaker 8: Joe Keller had no childre.
[16:50] Speaker 4: Marge, Honey, Steino was right. I was beat.
[16:56] Speaker 7: I don't know how I managed to drag myself along.
[16:59] Speaker 7: So I did the right thing. I chucked it all.
[17:02] Speaker 7: Now I'm fit. See, I never felt better in my life,
[17:05] Speaker 7: and I'm raring.
[17:06] Speaker 8: To go great in a month or two, we may
[17:09] Speaker 8: think about going back.
[17:10] Speaker 4: I'm not used to being idol.
[17:12] Speaker 8: Or neither of mine, but I am learning to love it.
[17:16] Speaker 4: Oh boy, why didn't I meet you when I was young?
[17:21] Speaker 8: Young Jerry? You weren't even twenty one.
[17:24] Speaker 7: Oh, I was already made when we met. I had
[17:27] Speaker 7: already become what I was going to be. You know,
[17:30] Speaker 7: I've got a certain amount of a billet.
[17:32] Speaker 8: A tremendous amount, Jerry.
[17:34] Speaker 7: But I'm not confident on me. I doubt myself. I
[17:39] Speaker 7: guess I didn't have very much encouragement when I was
[17:41] Speaker 7: a kid. You know, my brother was a great athlete,
[17:44] Speaker 7: my sister was a great beauty. I was kind of
[17:47] Speaker 7: clumsy and funny looking. Anyway, Frank and Alice was sent
[17:52] Speaker 7: to college when my turn came. The money had run out,
[17:56] Speaker 7: or maybe they thought I wasn't worth the effort. That's
[17:59] Speaker 7: why I enlisted. When I was eighteen, I had to
[18:02] Speaker 7: get away from the house of my father. There was
[18:05] Speaker 7: no place else to go.
[18:07] Speaker 8: You never told me this, honey.
[18:09] Speaker 7: I decided, if I ever had a kid, I'd never
[18:14] Speaker 7: make jokes at his expense or tear them down in
[18:18] Speaker 7: any way. I know how these things cut inside where
[18:22] Speaker 7: it doesn't show. I would do everything to build them
[18:25] Speaker 7: up and get them confidence. I will never never have
[18:32] Speaker 7: any real confidence.
[18:33] Speaker 4: March. Oh, yes you will. No, Baby, you won't get
[18:37] Speaker 4: it from a pep talk.
[18:39] Speaker 8: I think we'd go back home now, White all right
[18:43] Speaker 8: on want condition. You'll just have to slow down. I promise,
[18:49] Speaker 8: And Honey, there's only one way you can really slow down,
[18:53] Speaker 8: not to get a partnership from Joe count March.
[18:56] Speaker 4: Of course I do.
[18:57] Speaker 8: We're going to adopt a child, which means I'll quit
[19:01] Speaker 8: my job and you're not going to spend time on
[19:05] Speaker 8: the road. That kid will need both of us, won't you.
[19:10] Speaker 4: Yeah, yes, and he will.
[19:14] Speaker 8: And we need that partnership, don't we.
[19:26] Speaker 5: Jerry, Jerry, Baby, you look like a million bucks.
[19:33] Speaker 6: That's two percent for cash. Of course, Ramona, no calls.
[19:38] Speaker 6: I'm in a meeting. I can't be disturbed.
[19:41] Speaker 4: Well anyhow, Joe, Hello, I.

[20:33] Speaker 5: No, you don't, Jerry, But Joe, not not not don't interrupt.
[20:38] Speaker 5: You don't want one. You'd like one two different things.
[20:42] Speaker 5: I don't nitpick, Joe. You like a partnership, which means
[20:47] Speaker 5: it would be swell great if you had it.
[20:50] Speaker 6: But what is something else? It means lack. It means me.
[20:56] Speaker 5: I know you'd like to own a business, but you're
[20:59] Speaker 5: not cut out to be owner.
[21:00] Speaker 4: Why?
[21:02] Speaker 5: Because an owner is an officer and in your heart
[21:06] Speaker 5: you'll always being mustered. Man, tell me, could you ever
[21:09] Speaker 5: find a guy because you could get someone else cheaper.
[21:13] Speaker 5: If an old customer, a good friend, was getting slow
[21:15] Speaker 5: paying bills, could you cut him off? Thousands of Guys
[21:20] Speaker 5: like you go bankrupt every year. You're nice, sweet, big hearted,
[21:28] Speaker 5: but you don't have the guts business knee.
[21:30] Speaker 4: Well, I'd like to remind you of the volume myself.
[21:33] Speaker 6: I know it to the penny, Jerry, and you will
[21:34] Speaker 6: pay for it.
[21:35] Speaker 4: Well, I'm worth more now you are?
[21:38] Speaker 6: You got a sweet raise this morning, Joe.
[21:40] Speaker 4: Joe, don't don't think I'm not grateful.
[21:43] Speaker 7: You gave me my first break, but I think I
[21:45] Speaker 7: can do better elsewhere anywhere. Consolidated Treeman and Singer. Should
[21:50] Speaker 7: I get down the list or.
[21:51] Speaker 6: I'd love to have you, Jerry? What am I paying?
[21:56] Speaker 6: They handle the Nashley advertised brands? What did you be there? Glorified?
[21:59] Speaker 6: Ought to take?
[22:01] Speaker 5: They don't need your full selling ability, so they don't
[22:03] Speaker 5: have to pay a full price. Work sure with May,
[22:07] Speaker 5: you push out all the shlock. It's rough, but you
[22:10] Speaker 5: get top dollar. There's twenty outfits like mine. They grab
[22:14] Speaker 5: you tomorrow, but it was improvement. They won't pay you more.
[22:19] Speaker 5: At least here you got nine years equiting a pension plan.
[22:23] Speaker 5: You and May are used to each other. Sounds I
[22:27] Speaker 5: really like it, eh, Sometimes I feel like a father here, Jerry.
[22:41] Speaker 7: It was a fiasco. Patty a fiasco? And how do
[22:45] Speaker 7: I break it some more? What's it all about?
[22:48] Speaker 5: Jerry?
[22:48] Speaker 7: Well, at least I don't have to put up with
[22:50] Speaker 7: that Clark to I think i'd punch him right in
[22:52] Speaker 7: the math.
[22:53] Speaker 3: Will be the privatest wonderful company the next two weeks.
[22:56] Speaker 3: He's tooling that trailer into the Southwest.
[23:00] Speaker 2: Oh, Jerry, Patty?
[23:05] Speaker 4: Patty? Is someone standing behind me? No, Jerry, Paul, will
[23:10] Speaker 4: you tell me why?
[23:12] Speaker 2: I'll tell you everything, Jerry when I think maybe tonight, Paul,
[23:19] Speaker 2: why do you keep pumping him like this? I don't know, Boddy.
[23:23] Speaker 1: I can't control that, Paul.
[23:30] Speaker 4: How doy don't you see anyone?
[23:31] Speaker 3: Oh Jerry?
[23:32] Speaker 7: You didn't hear anyone talking to me either? No, Patty,
[23:36] Speaker 7: do you think I'm crazy? Maybe you should see you doctor.
[23:40] Speaker 7: I saw a doctor.
[23:41] Speaker 3: How about one of them psychiatrist Fellas?
[23:45] Speaker 7: I never even told my wife I did see a psychiatrist.
[23:49] Speaker 7: But after a while I figured why I pay him
[23:51] Speaker 7: fifty bucks an hour when I can come in here
[23:52] Speaker 7: and talk to you for nothing.
[23:54] Speaker 3: Well there must be more to them fellas than now.
[23:56] Speaker 7: I'm sure he said that the roots are my problem
[24:00] Speaker 7: and go back to my unhappy childhood. But Patty, I
[24:05] Speaker 7: have a brother, Frank, who feels terribly insecure. He goes
[24:09] Speaker 7: to a psychiatrist too. Why he had a happy childhood.
[24:12] Speaker 3: Put it this way, if you see someone and I don't,
[24:16] Speaker 3: the floor can be in me and out in you.
[24:20] Speaker 4: Drink No, no, I better go home and face them.
[24:25] Speaker 12: You's Jerry, Oh, Let's go someplace and talk where.
[24:46] Speaker 2: Let's go to the park at Let's sit in your car.
[24:49] Speaker 4: Let's call that will bother you.
[24:53] Speaker 2: Will not yet turn the heater on for yourself?
[24:58] Speaker 4: When will everyone else to be able to see you?
[25:01] Speaker 4: In two weeks?
[25:05] Speaker 2: Now?
[25:06] Speaker 4: It ain't Why not.
[25:10] Speaker 2: Because you dead?
[25:20] Speaker 4: Because you'll be dead.
[25:23] Speaker 1: Cold words from a warm friend. The chill inside the
[25:28] Speaker 1: car becomes intense, but Jerry knows there's no point in
[25:32] Speaker 1: turning on the heater. We'll rejoin these two friends when
[25:36] Speaker 1: I returned shortly with Act three, and now we return
[25:54] Speaker 1: to the final act of The Bullet and a reunion
[25:58] Speaker 1: of two war bodies who haven't seen each other in
[26:01] Speaker 1: almost nine years, Jerry Price, who was alive, and Paul Gardner,
[26:08] Speaker 1: who is dead.
[26:11] Speaker 2: The heater in this car doesn't do much good. You're shivering.
[26:14] Speaker 4: Why am I going to be dead. Paul.
[26:17] Speaker 2: Remember the night I went out on the patrol.
[26:19] Speaker 4: I'll remember that night as long as I lived.
[26:21] Speaker 2: I completed my job. I was headed back and then
[26:26] Speaker 2: I felt something smash against my head, and I knew,
[26:31] Speaker 2: I knew. I just met the bullet. You know, the
[26:35] Speaker 2: bullet we used to talk about. I bet you don't remember.
[26:38] Speaker 4: I remember. I remember.
[26:39] Speaker 2: I felt it slamming in me, and then I didn't
[26:45] Speaker 2: know anything anymore.
[26:46] Speaker 4: Yea, when the guys told me I went out to
[26:47] Speaker 4: catch you.
[26:48] Speaker 2: Paul, Yeah, I might have known you would. One minute
[26:51] Speaker 2: I was moving through a rice patty, and the next
[26:55] Speaker 2: minute I'm sitting in an office, and I knew a
[27:00] Speaker 2: lot of time had gone by. Don't ask me how
[27:02] Speaker 2: I knew. That's all. A man was talking to me.
[27:06] Speaker 2: What kind of man, you know, the type that's a
[27:10] Speaker 2: clerk in the government or a big cooperation, fussy, self important.
[27:15] Speaker 2: Everything's got to be in the right place. He doesn't
[27:17] Speaker 2: even look at me. He's got a piece of paper,
[27:19] Speaker 2: he says, Paul Gardner, you're going back. You should not
[27:26] Speaker 2: have died that night. The computation was for you to survive.
[27:31] Speaker 2: The plan was for you to marry a girl named
[27:37] Speaker 2: Marjorie Stone.
[27:39] Speaker 4: I married Marjorie Stall.
[27:41] Speaker 2: Yeah. I told the guy I want no part of it.
[27:45] Speaker 2: And he gives me a look. This clerk does like
[27:47] Speaker 2: he couldn't care less about me or you or anybody else.
[27:51] Speaker 2: And he says, come with me. He leads me to
[27:55] Speaker 2: a door.
[27:56] Speaker 4: It opens and.
[27:58] Speaker 2: All I could hear is a hum click, and all
[28:01] Speaker 2: I can see is a computer. I mean, there's no
[28:04] Speaker 2: end to the thing. That's all you can see is computer.
[28:07] Speaker 2: And he says, there it is, friend, city Hall, go
[28:11] Speaker 2: fight it. By this time, I'm shaken. That machine scared
[28:15] Speaker 2: the pants off me. You couldn't see the top to
[28:17] Speaker 2: the bottom of it. There was no end to it,
[28:19] Speaker 2: just machine wherever the eye could see. Well, then, what
[28:24] Speaker 2: happened this clerk, he tells me there's a plan, a
[28:30] Speaker 2: capital p plant. It calls for me to come home,
[28:36] Speaker 2: not you.
[28:38] Speaker 4: Maybe that's fair, Paul. You were always the better man.
[28:41] Speaker 2: Now you got more on the ball. He never got
[28:44] Speaker 2: a break. That's all. I had a chance to go
[28:46] Speaker 2: to school, become somebody. I could have gone into the
[28:50] Speaker 2: old man's business, become the biggest hardware dealer in Atlanta.
[28:54] Speaker 2: You and me, we both run away to join the army.
[28:57] Speaker 2: You because you had nothing, because I had everything?
[29:01] Speaker 4: But why are you coming back?
[29:04] Speaker 2: Because Marge and I are supposed to have a boy,
[29:07] Speaker 2: a certain kind of a boy. He'll grow up, I
[29:11] Speaker 2: don't know, discover something, create something, or be somebody the
[29:15] Speaker 2: world needs real bad. They wouldn't tell me what. And
[29:20] Speaker 2: you how forty fifty years from now he has to
[29:22] Speaker 2: be here, and of all the millions of men and women,
[29:26] Speaker 2: he could only be born to me and Marche.
[29:31] Speaker 4: Where when am I leaving?
[29:35] Speaker 2: I told you in two weeks. How nine o'clock at night,
[29:42] Speaker 2: a trailer truck will go past Patty Noon in saloon,
[29:47] Speaker 2: just as you're crossing the streets.
[29:51] Speaker 4: And why does it have to be like that?
[29:53] Speaker 2: Because you don't know how careful these things are figured.
[29:57] Speaker 2: You could get killed a million ways. But the plan
[30:01] Speaker 2: calls for a truck driven by a guy named Ed Clark.
[30:06] Speaker 4: I know Ed Clark.
[30:07] Speaker 2: He doesn't have a good record, so it'd be easy
[30:09] Speaker 2: to prove he's a careless driver. He works for a
[30:12] Speaker 2: big outfit. So Marsh we'll have a good sell.
[30:14] Speaker 4: But why I still don't know.
[30:15] Speaker 2: She'll need the money.
[30:17] Speaker 4: You see.
[30:18] Speaker 2: I won't be a good father, not as good as
[30:20] Speaker 2: you for sure. Oh, I love the kid, I'll love Marge,
[30:24] Speaker 2: but I won't be there a lot.
[30:27] Speaker 4: You know me.
[30:29] Speaker 2: I have to keep moving.
[30:30] Speaker 4: But if you know how important it is for.
[30:32] Speaker 2: The kid, I won't know. Once I'm alive, I won't
[30:36] Speaker 2: remember any of this.
[30:38] Speaker 7: And you'll say it's all figured out. Maybe not the
[30:40] Speaker 7: human element. How can the machine predict March would.
[30:44] Speaker 4: Go for you? Huh?
[30:45] Speaker 2: With all due respect, Jerry, did I ever have any
[30:49] Speaker 2: trouble landing any dame I had my sights on.
[30:52] Speaker 7: It's all due respect. I can't see March calling for
[30:54] Speaker 7: your line of chatter.
[30:56] Speaker 2: She will, Jerry, I'll be there when she's having a
[30:59] Speaker 2: bad time. She'll be all alone, she'll need somebody. Things
[31:04] Speaker 2: will take their natural course. Sure she'll see through my line,
[31:08] Speaker 2: but after a while she'll get to like it. I'm different.
[31:14] Speaker 2: You're quiet, I raise hell, you let things eat that
[31:18] Speaker 2: you're inside.
[31:18] Speaker 10: It's not me.
[31:19] Speaker 2: I pop off. Maybe my way is no better in
[31:22] Speaker 2: the long run. And she's married to you and she
[31:26] Speaker 2: loves you, but deep in her heart she loves my
[31:30] Speaker 2: way better. She'll fall in love with.
[31:36] Speaker 4: Jerry.
[31:36] Speaker 3: You have to believe.
[31:37] Speaker 2: I don't want to do this, but it was your bullet.
[31:42] Speaker 1: Not mine, Jerry.
[31:53] Speaker 7: Are you thinking about a guy down Staples to cancel
[31:57] Speaker 7: at Carloda Refrigerators?
[31:58] Speaker 4: So I'm not figuring approach.
[32:01] Speaker 8: Didn't we agree no more work at home?
[32:04] Speaker 4: Honey? This is just think you.
[32:06] Speaker 8: Did you talk to Joe Keller about.
[32:07] Speaker 4: The partnership and he said no?
[32:11] Speaker 8: Did you give him notice?
[32:12] Speaker 4: He gave me a raise? Oh?
[32:15] Speaker 1: Okay, Marge?
[32:17] Speaker 8: Why did you make sure to drink?
[32:18] Speaker 4: Honey? Aren't you going to say anything? Mm hmm.
[32:20] Speaker 8: Don't put in too much ice, March.
[32:22] Speaker 4: Please, you don't understand.
[32:23] Speaker 8: I understand I married a certain kind.
[32:26] Speaker 4: Of man and you're stuck with him.
[32:28] Speaker 8: No, I'll stick by him because I love him.
[32:33] Speaker 7: Would you have wanted a guy who'd brodge into Joe
[32:35] Speaker 7: Color's office and say, Joe, either give me half a
[32:38] Speaker 7: joint or I'll open up across the street and run you.
[32:39] Speaker 4: Out of business. Come that's the name, Marge. I have
[32:42] Speaker 4: to know.
[32:44] Speaker 8: Maybe I did.
[32:46] Speaker 4: Why didn't you marry him?
[32:48] Speaker 8: He never showed up.
[32:49] Speaker 4: So you settled for me.
[32:51] Speaker 8: That's what's known is falling in love. Come on, honey,
[32:55] Speaker 8: take me to the movie.
[32:56] Speaker 7: No, No, I don't want to take you to the movies.
[32:58] Speaker 7: Let's go downtown and see you play.
[33:00] Speaker 8: That's a lot of memory.
[33:01] Speaker 4: Are you gonna worry your pop money? And look? This weekend?
[33:05] Speaker 4: Would you like to fly out to say it snow
[33:07] Speaker 4: Valley and seek? Yeah? How about Las Vegas?
[33:10] Speaker 9: H what's gotten?
[33:12] Speaker 3: Indies?
[33:12] Speaker 7: I mean we're gonna have two weeks of the most
[33:15] Speaker 7: fantastic right?
[33:16] Speaker 8: Why two weeks? What's so special?
[33:20] Speaker 3: You me?
[33:25] Speaker 7: I just want to spend the rest of my life
[33:29] Speaker 7: having a ball with you.
[33:39] Speaker 3: Well, hello, stranger, I haven't seen you. It must be weeks.
[33:43] Speaker 3: Where have you been or getting march a good time?
[33:46] Speaker 3: I say it's done?
[33:47] Speaker 4: Wonders for you?
[33:48] Speaker 3: You look so calm?
[33:50] Speaker 4: Do I?
[33:52] Speaker 3: Do you ever see the little guy who wasn't there?
[33:56] Speaker 4: Uh?
[33:56] Speaker 3: No, Well that's good. Let's drink to it, Jerry. If
[34:01] Speaker 3: I'm not being forward? What did he want from you?
[34:05] Speaker 4: You wouldn't believe it, Patty?
[34:07] Speaker 3: Do you believe it?
[34:09] Speaker 10: Well?
[34:09] Speaker 7: I just dropped in and say hello Patty and goodbye Jerry.
[34:13] Speaker 3: Yep, something's the matter with you?
[34:16] Speaker 6: Well?
[34:17] Speaker 3: I understand ed Clark is to back it tonight. I
[34:21] Speaker 3: don't want to run into me. I just don't want
[34:23] Speaker 3: to talk to him. Well, if that's how you feel,
[34:25] Speaker 3: I'll about. I'm from the joint.
[34:28] Speaker 4: Jerry. Something's wrong with you? Oh no, nothing, Patty.
[34:31] Speaker 3: Look I'm an old soldier, Jerry. I can tell no.
[34:34] Speaker 3: It's really nothing, Really, is it?
[34:36] Speaker 2: No?
[34:37] Speaker 3: Jerry, you got a look on your face?
[34:39] Speaker 4: What kind of luck?
[34:40] Speaker 3: I've seen it before in the war. I've seen it
[34:43] Speaker 3: on men who go out on the impossible mission, the
[34:46] Speaker 3: look of men who know they're not coming back. They're resigned.
[34:50] Speaker 3: Look what do you resign to? Jerry?
[34:53] Speaker 4: You have a vivid imagination.
[34:55] Speaker 3: I have an imagination, Jerry, whatever it is, don't be
[34:59] Speaker 3: resigned with You can't fight city. I knew it. You're
[35:03] Speaker 3: in a fight, Cherry.
[35:05] Speaker 4: Well, you can fight anybody.
[35:07] Speaker 3: You're an ex combat soldier and you weren't afraid of
[35:10] Speaker 3: anything when you were out there. You faced up to death, hunger, despair.
[35:15] Speaker 4: What happened to you, Jerry? Where did you lose it?
[35:19] Speaker 4: Face up to it?
[35:20] Speaker 3: Now? Whoever he is spit in his eye, Paddy, I
[35:24] Speaker 3: can't do anything, Jerry. I'm gonna throw you out of
[35:27] Speaker 3: here for your own good. Now, leave, leave town, go
[35:30] Speaker 3: far away for a while.
[35:32] Speaker 4: Fight at Jerry, fight Hardy, Patty, wherever I go.
[35:35] Speaker 3: Listen told Patty just take off.
[35:37] Speaker 4: Don't you see there's a plan. Who cares put up
[35:39] Speaker 4: a fight? Why you saw upset? Patty? Huh?
[35:42] Speaker 3: I don't know, but listen to me.
[35:45] Speaker 7: Fight now, I'll get out of here, Paddy, Patty, it's Jerry.
[36:16] Speaker 4: I decided to fight it.
[36:17] Speaker 3: Good boy, Jerry.
[36:18] Speaker 7: You know, Patty there's something about your place. I don't
[36:20] Speaker 7: know how to say it, but I feel stronger, better
[36:23] Speaker 7: away from it.
[36:24] Speaker 4: So I'm going to fight. What have I got to lose? Huh?
[36:27] Speaker 4: Why should I do what he tells me? Why should
[36:29] Speaker 4: I believe him?
[36:30] Speaker 3: I don't know what it is, but I agree.
[36:32] Speaker 4: I'll see you around Patty Universal number three for.
[36:39] Speaker 2: Morning. Who you call him?
[36:43] Speaker 4: Jerry March.
[36:44] Speaker 2: I have to tell him, Jerry, don't do it this way.
[36:50] Speaker 2: There'll be a hundred other people on that place. Do
[36:53] Speaker 2: it the way it has to be done, Paul.
[36:55] Speaker 6: I have to fight you.
[36:56] Speaker 1: Why?
[36:57] Speaker 4: Because it isn't fair?
[36:58] Speaker 2: Was it fair for me to your bullet? Come on,
[37:02] Speaker 2: Jerry and Clark will be doing by Patty's in less.
[37:04] Speaker 6: Than an hour.
[37:06] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[37:07] Speaker 2: If I haven't hear, I'll help you, buddy, I'll help you.
[37:11] Speaker 3: Come on.
[37:12] Speaker 9: Hell, Hello, what is it mister Newman.
[37:23] Speaker 3: I called you, and I hope it wasn't out of turn,
[37:26] Speaker 3: Missus Price. It's about Jerry.
[37:29] Speaker 8: What about Jerry?
[37:30] Speaker 3: He's sitting back there in the booth. Now, wait, don't
[37:33] Speaker 3: go to him yet. He's in trouble.
[37:35] Speaker 8: It can't be if it's such a glorious jewey.
[37:39] Speaker 3: He's in trouble.
[37:40] Speaker 8: What kind of trouble?
[37:42] Speaker 3: I don't know. We have to help him somehow.
[37:45] Speaker 11: Is it that?
[37:46] Speaker 8: Buddy?
[37:47] Speaker 3: I think so well?
[37:49] Speaker 8: The time has come to lay that nonsense to rest
[37:51] Speaker 8: once and for all, and I'm going.
[37:53] Speaker 3: To it won't work.
[37:54] Speaker 4: Agree with him true? Anything he wants is okay with you.
[37:59] Speaker 3: Don't fight or we can give me is love?
[38:06] Speaker 8: Hi, honey? Fine your drink?
[38:09] Speaker 4: Oh sure you know? I never knew you had those
[38:13] Speaker 4: little gold highlights in your hair.
[38:14] Speaker 8: Oh I'm using a different bottle this week.
[38:17] Speaker 4: I love you.
[38:19] Speaker 8: I love you too, and I want you to be
[38:21] Speaker 8: with me always.
[38:24] Speaker 2: Come on, Jerry, let's start.
[38:26] Speaker 4: No got yet?
