[0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome to r slash am I the jerk, where a
[0:02] Speaker 1: wild Karen has some really sticky fingers. My girlfriend's sister
[0:06] Speaker 1: keeps stealing my stuff and they all think it's funny.
[0:09] Speaker 1: I've been visiting my girlfriend's house and her sister, who's 12,
[0:13] Speaker 1: has stolen my phone, my keys, my watch, etc. She
[0:17] Speaker 1: likes to hide my stuff and gives me clues on
[0:19] Speaker 1: where to find it all. My girlfriend and her family
[0:21] Speaker 1: seem to think this is charming and adorable, but I
[0:24] Speaker 1: just find it really annoying when I'm trying to dig
[0:26] Speaker 1: my phone out from behind the fridge because she decided
[0:28] Speaker 1: to put it there. Her sister justifies it by saying
[0:32] Speaker 1: that she deserves my stuff more and I can win
[0:34] Speaker 1: it back. I just find it bizarre her parents aren't
[0:37] Speaker 1: really doing anything about it. I talked to my girlfriend
[0:39] Speaker 1: about it and I said her sister was being a
[0:41] Speaker 1: brat by stealing all of my stuff and hiding it
[0:44] Speaker 1: and it's really getting on my nerves. I don't find
[0:47] Speaker 1: it funny like they do. I also said I don't
[0:49] Speaker 1: like that her parents are okay with it. My girlfriend
[0:52] Speaker 1: said that I was being too harsh. She's just a
[0:54] Speaker 1: kid and she's just doing what kids do. She said
[0:58] Speaker 1: she's not being a brat And you can't get mad
[1:00] Speaker 1: at a kid for acting like a kid. I don't
[1:02] Speaker 1: get this at all because I wasn't stealing people's stuff
[1:05] Speaker 1: when I was a kid. Kids can know how to behave.
[1:08] Speaker 1: But I also grew up with strict parents. If I
[1:11] Speaker 1: behaved that way with a guest, my parents would have
[1:13] Speaker 1: been upset. So I told her the first part and
[1:16] Speaker 1: I said I don't care if she's a kid. She
[1:18] Speaker 1: needs to stop stealing my stuff and give back what
[1:20] Speaker 1: she stole. She said she thinks I'm being unreasonable expecting
[1:24] Speaker 1: her sister to act like she's an adult but she'll
[1:26] Speaker 1: talk to her parents. but it's hard to get her
[1:28] Speaker 1: to behave because she's so young. So yeah, she doesn't
[1:32] Speaker 1: seem happy that I'm annoyed by her sister. Am I
[1:34] Speaker 1: the jerk here? Not the jerk. While I see where
[1:38] Speaker 1: the family is coming from, hey look, sister is so
[1:41] Speaker 1: accepting of you that she's engaging in the behavior she
[1:43] Speaker 1: does with us. Isn't that a good thing? But you're
[1:46] Speaker 1: saying that you really want her to find another way
[1:48] Speaker 1: to accept you without playing games. It's good practice for
[1:52] Speaker 1: her out in the real world where roommates and coworkers
[1:54] Speaker 1: won't put up with that. Also, that crack about deserving
[1:58] Speaker 1: your stuff more makes her sound entitled. She doesn't deserve
[2:01] Speaker 1: anyone's stuff. She needs to work on this before she
[2:04] Speaker 1: messes around and finds out. Well, who do you think
[2:07] Speaker 1: is the jerk? OP or his girlfriend's family? Please let
[2:11] Speaker 1: us know. Never voluntarily hang out in places where you
[2:15] Speaker 1: are disrespected. I'm leaving my boyfriend because of a prenup.
[2:20] Speaker 1: I'm 34 female and breaking up with my boyfriend who's
[2:23] Speaker 1: 34 male because of a prenup. I've been with my
[2:26] Speaker 1: boyfriend for about two years. Everything is going well and
[2:29] Speaker 1: we love each other. We've been discussing marriage and he
[2:32] Speaker 1: mentioned he would not marry me without a prenup. We
[2:35] Speaker 1: discussed this in detail and I didn't like what he proposed.
[2:38] Speaker 1: His family owns a lot of property, land and has
[2:40] Speaker 1: lots of savings. After marriage, he wants me to move
[2:43] Speaker 1: into one of the houses his parents own. I told
[2:46] Speaker 1: him I'm uncomfortable building a life and a family in
[2:49] Speaker 1: a house that I have no ownership of and he
[2:51] Speaker 1: didn't understand. I told him I'd prefer to rent a
[2:54] Speaker 1: place together. or we can live temporarily in one of
[2:57] Speaker 1: his parents' houses and look at property together. But he refused.
[3:01] Speaker 1: He said he liked the houses his parents already owned.
[3:04] Speaker 1: He said he would not buy other property. He said
[3:06] Speaker 1: he would not sell any of his property to buy
[3:08] Speaker 1: one with me. He told me if I wanted my
[3:11] Speaker 1: own property, I could save up money by living in
[3:13] Speaker 1: one of these properties and invest in one myself. The
[3:16] Speaker 1: problem is, he would be entitled to half if we
[3:18] Speaker 1: divorce since my purchase would happen after our marriage. He
[3:22] Speaker 1: told me I could pay his parents rent if I
[3:24] Speaker 1: feel like I don't belong on the property. He told
[3:27] Speaker 1: me I could buy half of the house we live
[3:29] Speaker 1: in from his parents. The problem is I don't like
[3:32] Speaker 1: the houses that he or his parents own. They also
[3:35] Speaker 1: have a lot of stuff and I feel like there's
[3:37] Speaker 1: no space for me. I want to look at houses.
[3:39] Speaker 1: I want to pick the place I live and I
[3:41] Speaker 1: want to do that with my partner. I've made this
[3:44] Speaker 1: clear to him over and over but he won't budge.
[3:46] Speaker 1: He earns more than me and he has more assets
[3:49] Speaker 1: than me for sure. He made it clear that he
[3:51] Speaker 1: was afraid I was a gold digger and he wants
[3:53] Speaker 1: to protect himself and his family's assets for me, which
[3:56] Speaker 1: I can understand. This whole thing has made me feel
[3:59] Speaker 1: very weird. This topic has come up before and it's
[4:02] Speaker 1: always made me feel very small. It makes me feel
[4:05] Speaker 1: like all he cares about are his assets. It makes
[4:08] Speaker 1: me feel like he wants me as long as I
[4:10] Speaker 1: fit into the life he already built and doesn't care
[4:12] Speaker 1: to build one with me. It makes me feel like
[4:14] Speaker 1: a gold digger. He has enough money to retire right
[4:18] Speaker 1: now and live comfortably. I don't. He basically told me
[4:21] Speaker 1: that whatever money he earns now, he can spend, so
[4:24] Speaker 1: he won't be investing in too much anymore. He expects
[4:27] Speaker 1: our earnings and our savings after marriage to be split,
[4:30] Speaker 1: which I feel off about. I'm sure this is normal
[4:32] Speaker 1: for some people. I'm sure other people would be happy
[4:35] Speaker 1: to be with someone who is well off, but I'm not.
[4:38] Speaker 1: I want someone beside me building a life with me,
[4:40] Speaker 1: not someone who has built a life with his parents
[4:42] Speaker 1: and wants me as long as I behave and fit
[4:45] Speaker 1: into his life. which is how he's been making me feel. So,
[4:48] Speaker 1: I'm leaving him. I welcome opinions on this, but yeah,
[4:51] Speaker 1: it's been too long that this has made me feel
[4:53] Speaker 1: off about our relationship. I'm protecting my peace and leaving
[4:57] Speaker 1: him with all of his houses and money. Additional info.
[5:01] Speaker 1: He mentioned prenups very early and I would keep asking
[5:04] Speaker 1: him about the details, but he would keep it very
[5:06] Speaker 1: vague and assure me that we would work it out
[5:08] Speaker 1: when the time came. I never asked him about his
[5:11] Speaker 1: assets and I never actually knew how much assets his
[5:13] Speaker 1: family had. The only things I knew were from some
[5:16] Speaker 1: of the one-off comments about certain assets. If he mentioned
[5:19] Speaker 1: this tenant or that tenant, or this thing they have
[5:21] Speaker 1: to repair, etc. I had also initiated these conversations. He
[5:26] Speaker 1: mentioned wanting to live with me and work towards marriage.
[5:29] Speaker 1: I figured then that this time had come. This is
[5:31] Speaker 1: when I set him down and asked him what he
[5:33] Speaker 1: expected from me, what he wanted, and to clarify the
[5:36] Speaker 1: conditions of any prenups he wanted to propose. He still
[5:39] Speaker 1: tried to dodge my inquiry. It took so long for
[5:41] Speaker 1: me to pull this information out of him. I guess
[5:44] Speaker 1: I did wait two years, but marriage talks seemed like
[5:46] Speaker 1: the right time to push him to discuss it. Update
[5:50] Speaker 1: Before I start, here's some important context. I have a
[5:53] Speaker 1: stable and rewarding career, and though I don't earn as
[5:55] Speaker 1: much as him, I'm very happy with what I can afford.
[5:58] Speaker 1: My parents have always taught me that women should be
[6:00] Speaker 1: independent and I've taken that to heart. I live below
[6:03] Speaker 1: my means, which has allowed me to put aside money
[6:05] Speaker 1: for savings and investments. A lot of comments have mentioned
[6:09] Speaker 1: that I should take the free rent and that it
[6:10] Speaker 1: would somehow set me forward in life. But for me,
[6:13] Speaker 1: giving up my sense of autonomy and control over my home,
[6:16] Speaker 1: my safe space, is not worth the potential savings. I
[6:19] Speaker 1: lived with my parents and saved aggressively until I was 30,
[6:22] Speaker 1: so I'm lucky enough to be in a position where
[6:24] Speaker 1: I can comfortably afford rent or a mortgage by myself. Plus,
[6:28] Speaker 1: he expected the living situation to be permanent. I would
[6:31] Speaker 1: not move into a house owned by someone else just
[6:33] Speaker 1: to save on rent. Would it be nice to save $ 2, 000
[6:36] Speaker 1: a month? Sure, but most people pay rent and I'm
[6:39] Speaker 1: not an exception. If I really wanted that, I could
[6:42] Speaker 1: move back in with my parents. But again, autonomy is
[6:45] Speaker 1: very important to me. If he's this stubborn now, I
[6:48] Speaker 1: don't see how this situation could be improved later after
[6:50] Speaker 1: I already moved in. I could also counter the prenup
[6:54] Speaker 1: and make it so all of my accumulated assets stay
[6:56] Speaker 1: mine and put in a clause that I'll be compensated
[6:59] Speaker 1: for any kids we have or put that I'd get
[7:01] Speaker 1: alimony or at least have a roof over my head
[7:03] Speaker 1: in case we divorce. But for me, that feels overly transactional.
[7:07] Speaker 1: It also gives me the vibes that I'm going to
[7:09] Speaker 1: be living with a roommate who I hook up with
[7:11] Speaker 1: and have babies with, not a partner. I prefer to
[7:14] Speaker 1: feel like we're in it together. He can keep what
[7:16] Speaker 1: was his, but I want to build up what is ours. Also,
[7:20] Speaker 1: if everything is completely split, it'll open up a new
[7:22] Speaker 1: can of worms. How will our expenses be split if
[7:25] Speaker 1: I'm working and he's just chilling? What happens when we
[7:28] Speaker 1: have kids? He has money saved for them, but will
[7:31] Speaker 1: I get a say in how we spend that money?
[7:33] Speaker 1: I know these can be worked out but this is
[7:35] Speaker 1: not the type of marriage that I want. I can't
[7:38] Speaker 1: predict everything that will happen and I don't think I
[7:40] Speaker 1: can capture it in a contract and it's already been
[7:42] Speaker 1: so heartbreaking for me. I don't want to go through more. Anyways,
[7:46] Speaker 1: I'll just say that it feels like I was being
[7:48] Speaker 1: stripped of my autonomy, stonewalled and treated like a hostile.
[7:52] Speaker 1: So I told him I needed to end this relationship.
[7:54] Speaker 1: I appreciated and truly enjoyed my time with him but
[7:57] Speaker 1: our financial values and the preferred married lifestyle just don't match.
[8:01] Speaker 1: It was a quick and easy conversation, to be honest.
[8:04] Speaker 1: I expected the breakup to be a bit of a process,
[8:06] Speaker 1: not a one and done thing since our lives overlap
[8:08] Speaker 1: so much. I'm also in contact with a lot of
[8:11] Speaker 1: his family, so of course, during this whole time, a
[8:13] Speaker 1: lot of them got involved, blah blah blah. I do
[8:17] Speaker 1: love his parents. I had a great relationship with them.
[8:20] Speaker 1: I would go over to their house, we would have food, chat,
[8:23] Speaker 1: watch TV. Sometimes I would go to the parties they
[8:25] Speaker 1: host without my ex if he was busy. A few
[8:28] Speaker 1: days after my talk with my ex, I went over
[8:30] Speaker 1: to say goodbye. I didn't know if the prenup was
[8:33] Speaker 1: family enforced or not, so I kept it very general
[8:35] Speaker 1: and mainly focused on how the situation made me feel
[8:38] Speaker 1: and what I was looking for in a relationship. His
[8:41] Speaker 1: parents were shocked when I told them why I was leaving.
[8:43] Speaker 1: I'm going to bullet point the rest. His parents really
[8:46] Speaker 1: wanted grandbabies. However, ex's younger brother and sister-in-law don't want kids.
[8:51] Speaker 1: They were so happy when I came into their lives
[8:53] Speaker 1: and found out that I wanted kids. His parents had
[8:56] Speaker 1: created their wealth together with his dad being the major
[8:58] Speaker 1: breadwinner for most of the relationship. His mom was shocked
[9:02] Speaker 1: at what he was offering me, saying those aren't the
[9:04] Speaker 1: values he was raised with. She has been effectively retired
[9:07] Speaker 1: for almost 15 years, and she said X's dad never
[9:10] Speaker 1: made her feel uncomfortable because of the difference in earning potential.
[9:13] Speaker 1: They told me that they built their assets for themselves
[9:16] Speaker 1: and their kids. They said that includes whoever their kids
[9:19] Speaker 1: decided to share their lives with. They also have enough
[9:22] Speaker 1: investments that they can live off of those. They told
[9:24] Speaker 1: me their plan was to sign over a house of
[9:26] Speaker 1: our choosing as a wedding gift or sell a house
[9:29] Speaker 1: and give us cash so we could buy a house together.
[9:31] Speaker 1: As they got older, they planned to evenly divide their
[9:34] Speaker 1: properties between my ex and his brother since they wouldn't
[9:37] Speaker 1: want to manage the properties anymore and live off investments.
[9:40] Speaker 1: Ex's mom said that she would have made sure my
[9:42] Speaker 1: name was on my ex's portion especially since we were
[9:45] Speaker 1: wanting to have kids. They mentioned investments will go directly
[9:48] Speaker 1: into funds for grandkids after their passing. Maybe this is
[9:51] Speaker 1: what my ex was referring to when he said his
[9:53] Speaker 1: kids would be set. Ex's mom told me that the
[9:56] Speaker 1: mother of her grandbabies would be taken care of and
[9:58] Speaker 1: she wanted us to be on equal footing while raising
[10:00] Speaker 1: a family. To be honest, this conversation was kind of
[10:04] Speaker 1: like a weight off my chest. I always loved his
[10:06] Speaker 1: family and never felt excluded but the prenup talks left
[10:09] Speaker 1: me confused and hurt. What they said fit with what
[10:12] Speaker 1: I knew from my ex and them before. I'd be
[10:15] Speaker 1: lying if I said I didn't start imagining this life.
[10:18] Speaker 1: I talked to my ex again. Basically, he told me
[10:21] Speaker 1: his dad had joked before about how he hoped he
[10:24] Speaker 1: and his brother would not find gold diggers, and that's
[10:26] Speaker 1: where that comment came from. He felt responsibility to protect
[10:30] Speaker 1: his parents' assets, since he didn't feel entitled to them,
[10:33] Speaker 1: so by extension, I wasn't entitled either. In his culture,
[10:36] Speaker 1: sons carry on the family line, so he felt he
[10:39] Speaker 1: had to keep his assets in the family line, which
[10:41] Speaker 1: I'm not a part of, but any sons we had
[10:43] Speaker 1: would be. Most of the assets he's worried about are
[10:46] Speaker 1: under his parents' names. and he had never asked for
[10:48] Speaker 1: their opinion on what to do. He just did what
[10:50] Speaker 1: he thought he should. He also said he isn't that
[10:53] Speaker 1: well off and that his assets shouldn't come between us.
[10:56] Speaker 1: This is still confusing to me. Isn't this whole thing
[10:58] Speaker 1: because he was well off and wanted to hold on
[11:00] Speaker 1: to what he had and not create a shared lifestyle?
[11:03] Speaker 1: I think maybe he meant he didn't own much and
[11:06] Speaker 1: most things actually were under his parents' name. He felt
[11:09] Speaker 1: he was punching above his weight with me and was
[11:11] Speaker 1: scared I would leave him. He was afraid I was
[11:13] Speaker 1: with him because of his finances since that was the
[11:15] Speaker 1: only thing he had more of whereas he said I'm intelligent, hardworking, beautiful, etc.
[11:21] Speaker 1: He was scared about moving forward with a relationship but
[11:24] Speaker 1: instead of communicating, he became defensive. To me, it seems
[11:28] Speaker 1: like he said and did these things because he was
[11:30] Speaker 1: feeling deeply insecure. He had made a couple of passing
[11:32] Speaker 1: comments about me being more beautiful than him or how
[11:35] Speaker 1: I'm more hardworking, etc. But I had always taken them
[11:38] Speaker 1: as compliments, not self-deprecating comments towards himself. He's such a caring,
[11:42] Speaker 1: funny and intelligent person, just in a different way than me. Also,
[11:46] Speaker 1: I know he's not as confident as he comes across,
[11:49] Speaker 1: but I had no idea that his insecurities ran this deep.
[11:52] Speaker 1: He also apologized over and over about how he didn't
[11:54] Speaker 1: mean to make me feel like an outsider to him
[11:56] Speaker 1: and his parents and insisted that he wanted to share
[11:58] Speaker 1: life with me. He said his insecurities and fear got
[12:01] Speaker 1: the best of him and he didn't handle it well.
[12:04] Speaker 1: He had taken advantage of my patience and lashed out
[12:06] Speaker 1: because he felt inadequate and scared. It broke my heart
[12:09] Speaker 1: because I think all of this could have been avoided.
[12:12] Speaker 1: We've been through this song and dance before many times
[12:14] Speaker 1: where he would feel some sort of way, then act
[12:16] Speaker 1: out as he's processing it. Until now, I always stayed
[12:20] Speaker 1: through it and we moved on, but it's never gone
[12:22] Speaker 1: on for so long. But I guess the issues we
[12:24] Speaker 1: faced before were smaller compared to mapping out our whole lives.
[12:28] Speaker 1: I've pushed him to seek individual counseling and we've attended
[12:30] Speaker 1: couples counseling together, but I can't force him to sit
[12:33] Speaker 1: and identify his emotions or employ the tools we were taught.
[12:37] Speaker 1: The prenup conversation happened over a long period of time.
[12:40] Speaker 1: He had so many chances to pump the brakes and
[12:42] Speaker 1: reflect on what he was saying and simply just listen
[12:44] Speaker 1: to me, but he didn't. He then sat in front
[12:47] Speaker 1: of me saying that everything he said before was not
[12:50] Speaker 1: what he meant. He said he would be happy to
[12:52] Speaker 1: take care of me and our future kids. We could
[12:54] Speaker 1: buy a house together or rent if we wanted to
[12:56] Speaker 1: because now he wasn't scared about creating a life together,
[12:59] Speaker 1: complete opposite to everything he had been saying. But how
[13:02] Speaker 1: unsettling it is that he seemed so completely comfortable and
[13:05] Speaker 1: confident in his hurtful words he previously said and was
[13:08] Speaker 1: okay with placing me in a very unequal position in
[13:11] Speaker 1: the relationship. Despite me continuously trying to articulate what I
[13:15] Speaker 1: wanted and how he was making me feel, he didn't
[13:17] Speaker 1: even consider my side over months. I know I have
[13:21] Speaker 1: a good deal with what his parents are offering, and
[13:23] Speaker 1: I know he and I get along super well, but
[13:25] Speaker 1: I'm not marrying his parents. I can't have his mom
[13:28] Speaker 1: with us during every argument or life decision we make.
[13:31] Speaker 1: Thinking back, I can count on one hand where we've
[13:33] Speaker 1: run into issues, and he was able to address it
[13:36] Speaker 1: without acting up. He's such a nice guy, but I
[13:39] Speaker 1: can't be his garbage bin every time he needs to
[13:41] Speaker 1: sort out his feelings. It's already worn me down. He's
[13:44] Speaker 1: a grown man. He's intelligent and intuitive. He's had two
[13:48] Speaker 1: years to learn how to communicate with me and he's not.
[13:51] Speaker 1: I honestly can't tell if what he's said to me
[13:52] Speaker 1: is genuine or coming from his parents or coming from
[13:55] Speaker 1: a fear of losing me. I could give him the
[13:57] Speaker 1: benefit of the doubt again and move forward with the
[13:59] Speaker 1: relationship as I've done in the past, but I'm tired.
[14:03] Speaker 1: I think this is a fixable problem, but I also
[14:05] Speaker 1: have not seen any improvement since we started dating. If anything,
[14:09] Speaker 1: this prolonged experience has made me feel it's gotten worse.
[14:12] Speaker 1: I will not make the mistake of investing in a
[14:14] Speaker 1: man because of what he could be instead of who
[14:16] Speaker 1: he is. If the last few months are a testament
[14:19] Speaker 1: to how he handles stressful situations, I can only take
[14:22] Speaker 1: things as they are and assume they won't change. This
[14:25] Speaker 1: whole thing has left me sour. I don't need too much,
[14:28] Speaker 1: but I do expect to be treated with love and support,
[14:30] Speaker 1: even during times of disagreement. I can't just forget the
[14:33] Speaker 1: feelings and words I've felt and heard over the last
[14:35] Speaker 1: couple of months. I can't just unhear and unknow that
[14:38] Speaker 1: he's afraid I'm a gold digger. That was just one
[14:41] Speaker 1: of many comments that really hurt me. I think life
[14:43] Speaker 1: will have a lot more ups and downs and I
[14:45] Speaker 1: can't imagine what kind of difficulties we'll face if this
[14:48] Speaker 1: is how we communicate, even after identifying it and working
[14:51] Speaker 1: on it in therapy. For these reasons, I'm choosing to
[14:54] Speaker 1: walk away. Very different from leaving because of a prenup,
[14:57] Speaker 1: but it is leaving nonetheless. And to be honest, this
[15:00] Speaker 1: hurts more. I know it will hurt for a while,
[15:02] Speaker 1: but I pray I'll be avoiding heartache and complications in
[15:05] Speaker 1: the future. Who knows? If it was meant to be,
[15:07] Speaker 1: maybe we'll find our way back together. For now, I
[15:10] Speaker 1: told him and his family that I need space and time.
[15:13] Speaker 1: I know this seems like I'm giving up a lot,
[15:15] Speaker 1: but of course, there are things I can't put into
[15:17] Speaker 1: a post. Edit. I actually wrote the above quite early,
[15:21] Speaker 1: but I didn't post it because I didn't feel like
[15:23] Speaker 1: it was over. But now, after this time, I know
[15:26] Speaker 1: it is. It's been tough, and it's only been a
[15:29] Speaker 1: couple of months, but I'm sure I made the right call.
[15:32] Speaker 1: It's tough watching everyone coupled up and having kids, but
[15:35] Speaker 1: it is what it is. I'm proud of myself for leaving,
[15:38] Speaker 1: and I'm slowly healing. He was right in one thing, though.
[15:42] Speaker 1: She is, in fact, too good for him. And it
[15:45] Speaker 1: must hurt him that even his parents know that she's
[15:48] Speaker 1: too good for him and why they broke up. Hence,
[15:50] Speaker 1: his parents will always be ashamed and disappointed in him
[15:53] Speaker 1: going forward, especially since they wanted grandkids and OP was
[15:57] Speaker 1: willing to have kids. Plus, they both like her as
[15:59] Speaker 1: a person and her financial thought process was similar to
[16:02] Speaker 1: the parents'. It's tragic how someone in such a ridiculously
[16:06] Speaker 1: good situation handed to them on a silver platter just
[16:09] Speaker 1: completely nukes it for the dumbest reasons possible. His parents
[16:13] Speaker 1: must be so upset. OP's ex is the kind of
[16:16] Speaker 1: stupid where the family wealth is on its way to
[16:18] Speaker 1: being eradicated by the third generation. I guess I'm a
[16:22] Speaker 1: weirdo because I feel like a prenup isn't a problem
[16:24] Speaker 1: at all. If I married a rich woman, I would
[16:27] Speaker 1: gladly sign a prenup. I'm not expecting her assets to
[16:30] Speaker 1: be mine. I do expect her assets to go to
[16:32] Speaker 1: our kids though along with mine. They both have different
[16:35] Speaker 1: way to view a relationship so it's different values. A
[16:38] Speaker 1: gap that big, you need a prenup in my opinion.
[16:41] Speaker 1: I've heard so many stories about people getting done over
[16:43] Speaker 1: in divorce, even having two of my friends as examples.
[16:47] Speaker 1: I don't think a prenup is crazy at all. I
[16:49] Speaker 1: was raised by a single mom and even she told
[16:51] Speaker 1: me to get a prenup if I ever get married
[16:53] Speaker 1: since courts wouldn't favor me. Did you read only the
[16:57] Speaker 1: title before commenting? Because if you read this whole thing
[17:00] Speaker 1: and this was your takeaway, then you should go back
[17:02] Speaker 1: to school for reading comprehension. This story is BS. OP
[17:07] Speaker 1: can keep her earnings separate and invested for herself. A
[17:10] Speaker 1: prenup can give her everything she claims she wants. She
[17:13] Speaker 1: doesn't want him unless she gets his stuff too. She
[17:17] Speaker 1: doesn't want him because he's a callous jerk who lashes
[17:20] Speaker 1: out in stressful situations and doesn't put any equity at
[17:23] Speaker 1: all in her feelings and opinions. If you read the post,
[17:26] Speaker 1: you'd know it's not just about the money. After the breakup,
[17:29] Speaker 1: he even offered her everything she wanted, which she declined.
[17:32] Speaker 1: That's not what gold diggers do. She could have had
[17:34] Speaker 1: it her way money-wise, but it wasn't about the money.
[17:38] Speaker 1: This dude dodged a major bullet. She sounds awful. As
[17:42] Speaker 1: someone who's in law school, why on earth would I
[17:44] Speaker 1: want you to have equal claim to the fruits of
[17:46] Speaker 1: my labor when they were earned doing something my partner
[17:49] Speaker 1: couldn't do and didn't help me with? What entitles them
[17:53] Speaker 1: to benefit off of my work? Hopefully bro can find
[17:56] Speaker 1: a girl who isn't a gold digger for real. As
[17:59] Speaker 1: a lawyer, you're an idiot that gives us a bad name.
[18:03] Speaker 1: Prenups protect assets held before marriage and inheritance. Neither apply.
[18:07] Speaker 1: The ex did not own any of those properties. When
[18:10] Speaker 1: his parents passed, if the parents wanted them to go
[18:12] Speaker 1: to their son and their son only, OP would not
[18:15] Speaker 1: have any claim. What OP wanted was for them to
[18:17] Speaker 1: purchase a new home that they would own together. You
[18:20] Speaker 1: clearly lack reading comprehension skills and you're completely ignorant of
[18:24] Speaker 1: the law. Stop throwing your so-called law school education around
[18:28] Speaker 1: like that means you know anything. You're wrong in every aspect.
[18:31] Speaker 1: Man-children like you should not become lawyers. My wife has
[18:36] Speaker 1: scammed multiple people on Facebook and she lied to me
[18:39] Speaker 1: about it. So about a week ago, I got this
[18:41] Speaker 1: Facebook message from some lady saying that my wife scammed
[18:44] Speaker 1: her out of some money shipping baby clothes. I went
[18:47] Speaker 1: to my wife about it before talking to the lady
[18:49] Speaker 1: and my wife said, I've never seen this lady in
[18:52] Speaker 1: my whole life. She's just trying to get you to
[18:54] Speaker 1: send her $ 30. She then went on to block the
[18:56] Speaker 1: lady and that was that. Well, this morning I got
[18:59] Speaker 1: a message request from a different lady saying how my
[19:02] Speaker 1: wife scammed her also out of $ 120 and she sent
[19:05] Speaker 1: me screenshots of her and my wife's conversation and transactions.
[19:09] Speaker 1: I unblocked the other lady and she also sent me
[19:11] Speaker 1: conversations and transactions. And apparently there are others as well.
[19:15] Speaker 1: So I now have three ladies in my DMs with
[19:18] Speaker 1: proof that my wife scammed them out of money. lied
[19:20] Speaker 1: to them about having a miscarriage and said that she
[19:23] Speaker 1: was on bed rest and couldn't. She's at work as
[19:25] Speaker 1: a bartender right now. She's not on bed rest. The
[19:28] Speaker 1: thing that irks me the most is how quick she
[19:30] Speaker 1: was to lie to me and block the lady. It
[19:32] Speaker 1: just didn't feel right. But I thought, oh well, she
[19:35] Speaker 1: wouldn't lie to me about something like this. Now I'm
[19:38] Speaker 1: just sitting here wondering how much more she's lied to
[19:40] Speaker 1: me about and I don't feel like I can even
[19:42] Speaker 1: trust her anymore. My wife doesn't know that I have
[19:44] Speaker 1: all of this information. Any idea what I should do next?
[19:48] Speaker 1: Her reaction is a bit sus. She just said, I've
[19:51] Speaker 1: never seen her before. She's trying to get money from you.
[19:53] Speaker 1: I'd be like, what? Who is this? Why do they
[19:56] Speaker 1: think that? Give me their details so I can clear
[19:58] Speaker 1: this up. I'd put a hold on my credit and
[20:01] Speaker 1: check all of my accounts to be honest. If it
[20:03] Speaker 1: turns out she's really doing this, I'd find a divorce attorney.
[20:06] Speaker 1: If these people are genuine victims and they found you,
[20:09] Speaker 1: They can also find friends, family, and employers. OP. Her
[20:14] Speaker 1: reaction was what drove me to believe these people. Took
[20:16] Speaker 1: my phone and blocked this lady and denied, denied, denied.
[20:20] Speaker 1: But from the messages this lady had with my wife,
[20:22] Speaker 1: I fully believe that my wife has been scamming people.
[20:25] Speaker 1: And on top, she lied to them. Said that I
[20:27] Speaker 1: had shipped their packages. Lied and said she had a
[20:30] Speaker 1: miscarriage and had to be bedridden. And basically just tried
[20:33] Speaker 1: to play the victim the entire time when she had
[20:35] Speaker 1: no intentions of giving this lady her stuff. She even
[20:38] Speaker 1: sold her some clothing. that she had already given to
[20:40] Speaker 1: somebody else. And how quick she was to block the
[20:43] Speaker 1: lady is what I found suspicious, but I didn't do
[20:45] Speaker 1: anything because I believed her. Apparently, the original lady made
[20:48] Speaker 1: a post on some mom's group Facebook page, and that's
[20:51] Speaker 1: how they all found me. Plus, like a week ago,
[20:54] Speaker 1: my wife just randomly deleted her Facebook account, and it
[20:57] Speaker 1: all lines up perfectly for when the original lady threatened
[20:59] Speaker 1: to make a public post about my wife. They paid
[21:02] Speaker 1: her on a PayPal that isn't her actual PayPal. She's
[21:05] Speaker 1: at work right now, but I'm going to try to
[21:06] Speaker 1: do more digging into this later. But basically, that whole
[21:09] Speaker 1: Facebook group has my wife on a no-sell list because
[21:12] Speaker 1: this isn't the first time this has happened apparently. The
[21:15] Speaker 1: original lady who contacted me invited me and showed me
[21:18] Speaker 1: the public post that she made shaming my wife for
[21:20] Speaker 1: what she did. Talk to her about why she's doing
[21:23] Speaker 1: it and what else she's lied about. She should be
[21:25] Speaker 1: worried about the police too. OP. I don't think she'll
[21:28] Speaker 1: be honest at this point. I was invited to the
[21:30] Speaker 1: Facebook group my wife sold all of this stuff in
[21:33] Speaker 1: and they have a whole like three posts talking about
[21:35] Speaker 1: how she's on a ban list and she's cheated other
[21:37] Speaker 1: people out of their money too. Update. I confronted my
[21:41] Speaker 1: wife with all of the evidence that she's absolutely guilty
[21:43] Speaker 1: of doing this including the money trail and I had
[21:46] Speaker 1: my phone recording everything and a hidden security camera going
[21:49] Speaker 1: to watch it all and she still denied it and
[21:51] Speaker 1: then told me that I was a joke of a
[21:53] Speaker 1: husband for not believing her in this whole ordeal. And
[21:56] Speaker 1: she continued to go off on me for 45 minutes
[21:58] Speaker 1: and just say awful things. Anytime I would bring up
[22:01] Speaker 1: a point, she would just dismiss it and continue to
[22:03] Speaker 1: gaslight me. So I'm taking my two-year-old with me and
[22:06] Speaker 1: we're going to my buddy's house for the rest of
[22:08] Speaker 1: the week. Am I the jerk for dismissing my rude
[22:11] Speaker 1: daughter's feelings? Am I out of line? I'm female 45
[22:15] Speaker 1: and my daughter is 18. Recently, I just lost my aunt.
[22:19] Speaker 1: My daughter has always been a closed off and reserved person. However,
[22:22] Speaker 1: she's a little immature when she doesn't get what she
[22:24] Speaker 1: wants and is very snide and in-your-face sometimes during these occasions.
[22:29] Speaker 1: When my aunt passed, my sister came over and has
[22:31] Speaker 1: been here ever since, for about four weeks now, when
[22:34] Speaker 1: we arranged the funeral and reception. My daughter did not
[22:37] Speaker 1: cry or look upset at all, even though she'd sometimes
[22:39] Speaker 1: go to look after her great-aunt on the days her
[22:42] Speaker 1: great-uncle needed to go out since she was bedbound and
[22:44] Speaker 1: completely paralyzed and unable to speak. You'd expect some sort
[22:48] Speaker 1: of reaction, right? But she had none. She'd avoid her
[22:51] Speaker 1: great-aunt a lot, and she never even talked to me
[22:53] Speaker 1: about her. For this reason, I assumed she was just
[22:56] Speaker 1: detached as a lot of kids usually are and left
[22:58] Speaker 1: her alone. However, since her aunt came to stay with
[23:01] Speaker 1: us and brought her three kids, she's been very bratty
[23:04] Speaker 1: and complains when she has to clean up after them
[23:06] Speaker 1: because they're quite spoiled. She's like this every time they
[23:10] Speaker 1: come to stay because my sister is quite an unhygienic
[23:12] Speaker 1: person and she and her kids have had lice for years.
[23:15] Speaker 1: She didn't say anything to them since my aunt is grieving,
[23:18] Speaker 1: so she hides in her room for the whole day
[23:20] Speaker 1: because she feels stuffy and repulsed, always asking me when
[23:24] Speaker 1: will they leave. I understand why she feels this way.
[23:27] Speaker 1: I don't like how the kids and my sister crowd
[23:29] Speaker 1: my home and they don't clean up after themselves, but
[23:31] Speaker 1: they're family and we're grieving even if she's not. She
[23:35] Speaker 1: even hated the reception, not serving the guests, family and
[23:38] Speaker 1: family friends, and looked annoyed when I told her so.
[23:41] Speaker 1: And she said she just wanted to sit there. It
[23:43] Speaker 1: was very embarrassing for me, All she needed to do
[23:46] Speaker 1: was hand out water. I told her not to be
[23:48] Speaker 1: so mean, as their family and her aunt is grieving.
[23:51] Speaker 1: But she, being immature, narrowed her eyes at me and
[23:54] Speaker 1: told me she feels trapped in this house, wanting space,
[23:57] Speaker 1: before she went back to her room. Even when I
[23:59] Speaker 1: ask her to come downstairs and spend time with me.
[24:02] Speaker 1: She's usually very sweet, smart and mature, even emotionally, and
[24:06] Speaker 1: very perceptive. But for the past few weeks, she's been
[24:08] Speaker 1: more reclusive and bratty than usual. Even more so than
[24:11] Speaker 1: other times when her aunt has been around. Am I
[24:14] Speaker 1: right in being dismissive of her attitude and feelings? It
[24:17] Speaker 1: seems to me, as of recently, there's been a bad
[24:19] Speaker 1: change in her. Even if she doesn't care about her
[24:22] Speaker 1: great-aunt passing, someone who has taken care of her before
[24:25] Speaker 1: developing this illness and who she's known since she was young,
[24:28] Speaker 1: she should at least think of her aunt's needs. Honestly,
[24:30] Speaker 1: I'm quite annoyed. My mother told me I should just
[24:33] Speaker 1: leave her alone to herself, but she needs to be kinder. Edit.
[24:37] Speaker 1: I admit that tradition has influenced a lot of my
[24:39] Speaker 1: decisions and my own personality and that has in turn
[24:42] Speaker 1: affected my daughter as much as I ignored it. I'll
[24:45] Speaker 1: be having a long discussion with my sister about her problems,
[24:47] Speaker 1: trying to sort out her hygiene as well and making
[24:50] Speaker 1: her go back home and giving my daughter a much
[24:52] Speaker 1: needed apology. I don't want to lose her as many
[24:55] Speaker 1: of you had pointed out that the longer I continue
[24:57] Speaker 1: on this route, the higher the likelihood she'll cut me off.
[25:00] Speaker 1: I'll talk to her and I'll try to help her
[25:02] Speaker 1: out however she needs me to. Unfortunately, I'm not in America.
[25:05] Speaker 1: but I have called the social services on my sister
[25:08] Speaker 1: before and they closed the case after a very short investigation.
[25:11] Speaker 1: I will not be calling them again due to their
[25:13] Speaker 1: terrible service, but I will force my sister to get
[25:16] Speaker 1: her act together by completely barring her from my house
[25:18] Speaker 1: until she takes my advice. Only until she has begun
[25:21] Speaker 1: to take care of her own kids will I allow
[25:23] Speaker 1: her near my own. I will also be trying my
[25:25] Speaker 1: best to earn my daughter's forgiveness. You're the jerk. It
[25:29] Speaker 1: isn't your daughter's job to be an unpaid maid to
[25:32] Speaker 1: a family so unhygienic they carry lice. That's absolutely repulsive
[25:36] Speaker 1: and places your entire household at risk. And obviously it
[25:39] Speaker 1: isn't just their grief if this is how they live.
[25:42] Speaker 1: I wouldn't want to be around that level of illness
[25:44] Speaker 1: or neglect either. Why don't you try cleaning up after
[25:46] Speaker 1: them and get lice and see how you like it?
[25:49] Speaker 1: And also, who likes a funeral reception? What kind of
[25:53] Speaker 1: demented better homes and gardens party planet are you living on?
[25:56] Speaker 1: Stop alienating your daughter for no reason because family is
[25:59] Speaker 1: no excuse for what you describe. You're the jerk. I
[26:03] Speaker 1: ignored my husband so much that he went away without
[26:06] Speaker 1: telling me. I, Carla, 30, am six months pregnant with
[26:10] Speaker 1: mine and my husband's, Harry, 31, first baby. During this pregnancy,
[26:14] Speaker 1: I've been very exhausted every day and would usually come
[26:17] Speaker 1: home from work and go to bed an hour later.
[26:19] Speaker 1: Then I'd wake up at midnight and reheat whatever Harry
[26:22] Speaker 1: had made us for dinner. For context, I've been part
[26:24] Speaker 1: of a huge work project that's been going on for
[26:27] Speaker 1: months and I've been extremely overworked. On top of this,
[26:30] Speaker 1: my husband doesn't have a job at this moment and
[26:32] Speaker 1: isn't looking for one unless I remind him to. I've
[26:35] Speaker 1: been working overtime to get as much money as I
[26:37] Speaker 1: can before maternity leave. Our anniversary was on the 6th
[26:40] Speaker 1: of August and I'd asked him if we could have
[26:42] Speaker 1: a romantic dinner at home and then snuggle up to
[26:44] Speaker 1: watch TV under a warm blanket. I thought it was
[26:47] Speaker 1: a wonderful idea since I was too tired to go out.
[26:49] Speaker 1: and because I knew that Harry was doing most, if
[26:52] Speaker 1: not all, of the household chores. However, he seemed a
[26:55] Speaker 1: little annoyed when he agreed, but I thought nothing of it.
[26:58] Speaker 1: The next morning, Harry seemed quite cold towards me and
[27:01] Speaker 1: barely looked me in the eyes. Once I got home
[27:03] Speaker 1: from work, he wasn't there, but that was normal since
[27:06] Speaker 1: he could have been out with friends or at an interview,
[27:08] Speaker 1: and so I went to sleep. I woke up at
[27:10] Speaker 1: 11 that night to see that I was still alone
[27:12] Speaker 1: in the house, so I checked my phone. I had
[27:15] Speaker 1: about 8 missed calls from Harry and a long text.
[27:18] Speaker 1: I'm summarizing, but the text read, I understand how tired
[27:21] Speaker 1: you are because of this pregnancy and you having to
[27:23] Speaker 1: work extra hours most days, but I'm over being ignored
[27:26] Speaker 1: every day and having a five minute conversation with you
[27:29] Speaker 1: every so often. You expect me to do all the
[27:31] Speaker 1: housework and plan our boring anniversary alone. I'm really annoyed,
[27:36] Speaker 1: so I'm staying at a friend's tonight. Text me when
[27:38] Speaker 1: you see this. Of course, I called and texted him
[27:41] Speaker 1: about being sorry and wanting to talk, but I never
[27:43] Speaker 1: got an answer. In the morning, I called my boss
[27:46] Speaker 1: about having a day off and spent most of it
[27:48] Speaker 1: waiting for Harry and planning my apology. However, when he
[27:51] Speaker 1: came home, he silently handed me a rose and a
[27:53] Speaker 1: card saying that he loves me but needs a few
[27:56] Speaker 1: days away from me to figure out what he's going
[27:58] Speaker 1: to say and do. Then those days became a week.
[28:01] Speaker 1: This part happened on the 13th, 8 days later. I
[28:04] Speaker 1: messaged him every day and he would constantly say he
[28:07] Speaker 1: needed one more day or just another night at his
[28:09] Speaker 1: friend's to figure all of this out. but on the 13th,
[28:11] Speaker 1: I decided to go to his friend's house who he
[28:13] Speaker 1: was staying with to confront him. So I drove over,
[28:16] Speaker 1: nearly 30 minutes away, and banged on the door so
[28:19] Speaker 1: hard that I could hear it echo from the inside.
[28:22] Speaker 1: By this point, I'd realized that I should have put
[28:24] Speaker 1: in more effort to our relationship, but he also should
[28:26] Speaker 1: have talked to me about this instead of just running away.
[28:29] Speaker 1: Harry's friend came to the door and was confused but
[28:31] Speaker 1: pleased to see me. He seemed a little on edge
[28:34] Speaker 1: as I talked to him and he had to break
[28:35] Speaker 1: the silence every so often with comments about my pregnancy
[28:38] Speaker 1: and how he couldn't wait to meet the baby. Finally,
[28:41] Speaker 1: we stopped talking and I practically demanded to see Harry,
[28:44] Speaker 1: saying that I wanted to apologize but also explain how
[28:46] Speaker 1: childish he was being by hiding from me. The thing
[28:49] Speaker 1: that I found absolutely hilarious, but actually not at all,
[28:52] Speaker 1: was that his friend said that Harry wasn't there and
[28:55] Speaker 1: had left for Ireland on the 9th. Ireland! To say
[28:58] Speaker 1: I was absolutely furious and extremely confused would be such
[29:01] Speaker 1: an understatement. His friend invited me in and we sat
[29:04] Speaker 1: down to talk. Turns out that Harry had told his
[29:06] Speaker 1: friend of our problems and had come up with a
[29:08] Speaker 1: solution of going on a holiday as a couple to
[29:11] Speaker 1: sort everything out and learn to love each other again,
[29:14] Speaker 1: in Harry's words. So of course, his friend thought this
[29:17] Speaker 1: was a lovely idea and helped him book the flight
[29:19] Speaker 1: on the evening of the 5th, the first time he
[29:22] Speaker 1: had stayed at his friend's house. Since it was a
[29:24] Speaker 1: last-minute booking, Harry's friend had stayed up with him for
[29:26] Speaker 1: quite a while before they found a flight who was
[29:29] Speaker 1: taking a few more passengers due to cancelled tickets. His
[29:32] Speaker 1: friend then explained how he had been confused when I
[29:34] Speaker 1: arrived at the door but didn't want to say anything
[29:36] Speaker 1: about the holiday in case it had ended early due
[29:38] Speaker 1: to us arguing. Harry's return ticket is booked for the
[29:41] Speaker 1: 20th of August. I'm just so angry and quite heartbroken
[29:44] Speaker 1: to be honest. I messaged him the moment his friend
[29:47] Speaker 1: had finished talking and Harry only responded an hour ago
[29:50] Speaker 1: with nothing more than a had to figure things out, sorry.
[29:53] Speaker 1: So now I'm home alone again and trying to figure
[29:56] Speaker 1: out what I'm going to do or say when he
[29:57] Speaker 1: gets home. Anyway, thanks for reading about how my life
[30:00] Speaker 1: is going. Side note, I'm from the UK, so Ireland
[30:04] Speaker 1: isn't as far as people think since I'm not American,
[30:07] Speaker 1: but it still is far. Other side note, a question
[30:10] Speaker 1: that keeps repeating is, where did you get the money
[30:12] Speaker 1: from without you noticing? So I'll go ahead and explain that.
[30:15] Speaker 1: He has a bank account with his money from when
[30:17] Speaker 1: he worked as a teenager and a little into his
[30:20] Speaker 1: 20s before we met. And a few years ago, we
[30:22] Speaker 1: agreed not to touch that money and add to it
[30:24] Speaker 1: every so often. It was a backup backup savings account.
[30:27] Speaker 1: so I'm assuming that he took the money from there
[30:29] Speaker 1: since it wasn't from the joint account. Edit, six hours later.
[30:34] Speaker 1: I knew this post would get attention, but I assumed
[30:36] Speaker 1: it would only be a little. I've never used Reddit before,
[30:38] Speaker 1: but I've seen it on TikTok a few times, so
[30:40] Speaker 1: I thought posts only become popular on there. I was
[30:43] Speaker 1: upset when I posted this and didn't think about how
[30:45] Speaker 1: I'd handle all of the judgments and conspiracies once I'd
[30:48] Speaker 1: calmed down. I appreciate the hard truths, empathy, and or
[30:51] Speaker 1: advice given to me here, but I'm not divorcing him,
[30:54] Speaker 1: changing the locks, or calling a lawyer or anything like that. Update.
[30:58] Speaker 1: It's the 17th now. I've had a longer time to think.
[31:01] Speaker 1: I'm not deciding anything until our talk, but I definitely
[31:04] Speaker 1: won't be staying in my home with him after this.
[31:06] Speaker 1: I can't trust him to not run away again. I'll
[31:08] Speaker 1: talk more about this on my actual update, but I've
[31:11] Speaker 1: gained some self-respect and I'm realizing that he's being the jerk.
[31:14] Speaker 1: I talked to my mom and she's happy for me
[31:16] Speaker 1: to move in with her on the 21st and I'm
[31:18] Speaker 1: free to stay for as long as I need to.
[31:21] Speaker 1: How many tickets did he book? Is he alone? OP.
[31:25] Speaker 1: Two tickets as far as his friend knows and I
[31:27] Speaker 1: don't know who he took with him but I'd like
[31:29] Speaker 1: to assume it's a different friend or a relative or
[31:31] Speaker 1: that it just wasn't used. Guess I'd be waiting at
[31:34] Speaker 1: the airport with a sign with his name on it.
[31:37] Speaker 1: Just stand there casually and tell him that you're his ride.
[31:40] Speaker 1: Imagine if the affair partner doesn't know that he's married
[31:43] Speaker 1: and his wife is pregnant. She's gonna be shocked when
[31:45] Speaker 1: she sees you. Yeah, either he went with a girlfriend
[31:49] Speaker 1: who gets to meet the pregnant wife Or he went
[31:51] Speaker 1: alone because he was super sad and seeing her there
[31:54] Speaker 1: waiting for him might be a good way to get
[31:55] Speaker 1: started on repairing their... Yeah, sure, he totally went alone,
[31:58] Speaker 1: didn't he? Well, who do you think is the jerk?
[32:01] Speaker 1: OP or Harry? Please let us know. Harry should have
[32:04] Speaker 1: studied harder at Hogwarts. He's really not doing this life
