## Transcript

[0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome to r slash am I the jerk where Karen
[0:02] Speaker 1: ruins OP's car and refuses to pay for it. My
[0:06] Speaker 1: daughter ruined my car, doesn't want to fix it and
[0:08] Speaker 1: my wife agrees with her. I'm a 46 year old
[0:12] Speaker 1: man with a 19 year old daughter who attends university
[0:15] Speaker 1: in a city about an hour away. I cover all
[0:17] Speaker 1: of her expenses including rent, tuition, meals, everything. This summer
[0:22] Speaker 1: she almost exclusively used my car. I think I drove
[0:26] Speaker 1: it once a month. About a month ago, she scratched
[0:28] Speaker 1: the bumper while pulling into the garage. Weeks later, she
[0:32] Speaker 1: decided to do something about it. I didn't hound her,
[0:34] Speaker 1: I left it up to her. She apparently googled and
[0:37] Speaker 1: found that rubbing toothpaste on the scratches could remove them,
[0:40] Speaker 1: so she did that. It removed some, but also took
[0:44] Speaker 1: off the clear coat. Not a big deal, it's just
[0:46] Speaker 1: a bumper. But that's not the part that I'm here
[0:48] Speaker 1: to discuss. The car was dirty, so she decided to
[0:52] Speaker 1: wash it in the driveway instead of going to the
[0:54] Speaker 1: coin car wash. Some of the caked-on clay on the
[0:56] Speaker 1: driver's side wouldn't come off, so instead of using soap,
[0:59] Speaker 1: she decided to use toothpaste. She proceeded to scrub the
[1:03] Speaker 1: front quarter panel, driver's side doors, front and back, and
[1:07] Speaker 1: the rear quarter panel with abrasive toothpaste. After it dried,
[1:10] Speaker 1: she noticed the swirls and realized she had sanded off
[1:13] Speaker 1: the clear coat. Now, it's an older car, 2013, but
[1:17] Speaker 1: I've maintained it and it's mine. I've kept it in
[1:19] Speaker 1: perfect condition and I'm the first and only owner. So
[1:23] Speaker 1: I was left with an entire driver's side that had
[1:25] Speaker 1: swirl marks and looked sanded down. When I saw it,
[1:28] Speaker 1: I didn't get angry, I was stunned. I just said
[1:31] Speaker 1: I wanted it fixed and that I understood it was
[1:33] Speaker 1: a mistake. I explained that the clear coat had been
[1:36] Speaker 1: sanded off and that the only way to fix it
[1:38] Speaker 1: would likely be to repaint it. She called friends and
[1:41] Speaker 1: even contacted my brother-in-law and they all said the same thing,
[1:45] Speaker 1: it would need repainting. She got estimates and someone said
[1:48] Speaker 1: they could buff it out. They tried, she paid, but
[1:51] Speaker 1: they didn't fix it. The quotes for repainting range from $ 1, 200
[1:55] Speaker 1: to $ 2, 000. I brought it up at dinner and her
[1:58] Speaker 1: logic was, 1. It's not like I drive it every day. 2.
[2:02] Speaker 1: I could only sell it for maybe $ 7, 000 so it's
[2:05] Speaker 1: not worth the cost of repainting. 3. She's trying to
[2:08] Speaker 1: save money and work within a budget she has for herself.
[2:11] Speaker 1: Then my wife stepped in and her words, 1. If
[2:15] Speaker 1: it were her car, she wouldn't mind. I maintain her
[2:18] Speaker 1: car too. 2. Do I expect our daughter to pay $ 2, 500
[2:21] Speaker 1: to repaint my car? And 3. If I caused that damage,
[2:25] Speaker 1: would I pay $ 2, 500 myself to get it fixed, given
[2:28] Speaker 1: the value of the car? That last point was said
[2:31] Speaker 1: in such an accusatory manner, like I'm being unreasonable. Now,
[2:35] Speaker 1: here's the deal. I'm in therapy, I've got my own problems,
[2:38] Speaker 1: so please understand that I'm very careful and mindful about
[2:41] Speaker 1: how I speak to everyone. I'm making effort to be
[2:44] Speaker 1: as factual as possible and not negative. This situation bothered me,
[2:48] Speaker 1: so I spoke to my therapist, and she advised me
[2:51] Speaker 1: to rescind any driving privileges until it's fixed. I also
[2:54] Speaker 1: spoke to my sister, whose husband is the brother-in-law my
[2:57] Speaker 1: daughter consulted, and she believes that my daughter should take responsibility,
[3:01] Speaker 1: and that while it is an expensive mistake, it's on her. Info.
[3:06] Speaker 1: Does she have the money to pay you $ 1, 200 to $ 2, 000?
[3:09] Speaker 1: If not on hand, how difficult would it be for
[3:11] Speaker 1: her to pay you over time? And does she do
[3:13] Speaker 1: stupid things like this often? OP. Yes, she worked 39
[3:18] Speaker 1: hours a week. Her only expense she had was gas
[3:21] Speaker 1: all summer. The money is on hand. She tries sometimes,
[3:24] Speaker 1: but doesn't test her theories or research things before doing them.
[3:28] Speaker 1: She has damaged a lot of appliances and a central
[3:30] Speaker 1: vac unit by doing things she didn't think through, all
[3:33] Speaker 1: of which I replaced. Not the jerk. Time for her
[3:36] Speaker 1: to face some consequences for her dumb behavior. Maybe if
[3:39] Speaker 1: she had to pay for her mistakes in the past,
[3:41] Speaker 1: she may have learned to think or research before acting.
[3:44] Speaker 1: These are skills she needs as an adult, and you
[3:46] Speaker 1: won't always be able to pay for her poor judgment. Well,
[3:50] Speaker 1: who do you think is the jerk? OP or his daughter?
[3:53] Speaker 1: Please let us know. I've got a truck that I
[3:55] Speaker 1: want to have painted, and all of the quotes I've
[3:58] Speaker 1: been getting are around $ 4, 000 to $ 5, 000. In 2009, I
[3:59] Speaker 1: paid $ 300 for a really good paint job. Oh, how
[4:01] Speaker 1: I hate inflation. Am I the jerk for blowing up
[4:08] Speaker 1: at my pregnant wife and putting my foot down after
[4:11] Speaker 1: her blow up? We're renting a two-bedroom house from an
[4:14] Speaker 1: older man. Let's call him G for this. I don't
[4:16] Speaker 1: know how to really describe G, but older retired military
[4:20] Speaker 1: is the closest. This man has been nothing but kind
[4:23] Speaker 1: to us, far more than either one of our parents
[4:25] Speaker 1: have been. We live in California and the average rent
[4:28] Speaker 1: in our area is $ 2, 600 for a two-bedroom. At first,
[4:32] Speaker 1: we were a bit skeptical because the house was advertised,
[4:35] Speaker 1: but G wanted to meet the tenants personally before anything else.
[4:38] Speaker 1: The listing stated $ 2, 500 but also mentioned that it was negotiable.
[4:42] Speaker 1: We met with G and I don't know if he
[4:44] Speaker 1: liked us or felt sorry for us because we told
[4:47] Speaker 1: him our story, but he offered us the place for $ 1, 600.
[4:50] Speaker 1: Any problems we've had throughout the six years my wife
[4:53] Speaker 1: and I have lived in the house were fixed within
[4:55] Speaker 1: 48 hours. G is the landlord everyone wishes they had.
[4:58] Speaker 1: He isn't money hungry and if rent is a bit late,
[5:01] Speaker 1: he understands as long as you keep him informed. We
[5:04] Speaker 1: haven't had an issue with him in six years. I
[5:06] Speaker 1: asked him why he was renting the house to us
[5:08] Speaker 1: so cheaply and his story broke my heart. He bought
[5:11] Speaker 1: the house for his daughter a couple of years before
[5:13] Speaker 1: we moved in, but unfortunately, she and her fiance passed
[5:16] Speaker 1: away in an accident and he couldn't find the heart
[5:18] Speaker 1: to sell it, but he also didn't want it to
[5:20] Speaker 1: stay empty. During lockdown, when my wife lost her job
[5:24] Speaker 1: and I had to take a pay cut, I called
[5:26] Speaker 1: him and explained the situation. I asked if it was
[5:28] Speaker 1: possible for us to pay a couple of hundred less
[5:30] Speaker 1: in rent and I would pay everything back once lockdown
[5:33] Speaker 1: was over. He came over and talked to me and
[5:35] Speaker 1: my wife. After two hours of talking, he said that
[5:38] Speaker 1: he would forgive half of our rent until the whole
[5:40] Speaker 1: lockdown situation was done and then we could just go
[5:43] Speaker 1: back to the original contract. I can't describe how happy
[5:46] Speaker 1: I was. I thanked him with tears in my eyes.
[5:49] Speaker 1: With the $ 700 saved on rent, we were able to
[5:51] Speaker 1: keep our heads above water during that lockdown. That's the
[5:55] Speaker 1: kind of man G is. My wife is currently 5
[5:58] Speaker 1: months pregnant. G had some health scares so we hadn't
[6:01] Speaker 1: seen him for the last 6 months. He came over
[6:03] Speaker 1: the day before yesterday to tell us he's healthy again
[6:06] Speaker 1: and he will take up the responsibility of managing the property.
[6:09] Speaker 1: He saw my wife's belly and asked how far along
[6:12] Speaker 1: she was. We told him and he had this smile
[6:14] Speaker 1: from ear to ear and said congratulations. Before he walked off,
[6:18] Speaker 1: he said, Kids are expensive so as a baby gift
[6:21] Speaker 1: from me, let's make the rent an even $ 1, 000 until
[6:24] Speaker 1: the baby is born. For some reason, this set my
[6:27] Speaker 1: wife off completely. She started yelling at G, calling him
[6:31] Speaker 1: an old man who's looking down on us, and saying
[6:33] Speaker 1: he could take his useless gift and buzz off with it.
[6:36] Speaker 1: She was yelling for about three minutes, and every time
[6:38] Speaker 1: I tried to stop her, she just got louder and louder.
[6:41] Speaker 1: I don't know what got into her, but at the
[6:43] Speaker 1: end of her rant, she said, If you really want
[6:46] Speaker 1: to gift us something for our baby, you should not
[6:48] Speaker 1: make us pay rent at all. That is what you
[6:50] Speaker 1: call a gift. G took everything she said without responding.
[6:55] Speaker 1: His face went from happy to completely emotionless. After my
[6:58] Speaker 1: wife was done, he just left. I blew up at
[7:01] Speaker 1: my wife, asking her what was she thinking as she
[7:04] Speaker 1: never did anything wrong to us. She just started crying
[7:07] Speaker 1: and refused to talk to me the rest of the night.
[7:09] Speaker 1: Every time I brought it up, she would start crying
[7:11] Speaker 1: but I caught on to the crocodile tears and I
[7:14] Speaker 1: told her to just stop because I wanted an explanation.
[7:17] Speaker 1: Yesterday morning before I left for work, I told her
[7:20] Speaker 1: she better be ready because ready or not, when I
[7:22] Speaker 1: get home, we would talk about what happened and I
[7:25] Speaker 1: wouldn't accept her fake tears. I got a text from
[7:28] Speaker 1: G telling me we needed to talk. He asked to
[7:30] Speaker 1: meet at the house at 5 and I agreed. We
[7:33] Speaker 1: met up at the house and he asked to come in.
[7:35] Speaker 1: We sat in the living room and he asked if
[7:37] Speaker 1: my wife could join us. She did. He didn't ask
[7:40] Speaker 1: why or what happened, he just laid out what will
[7:42] Speaker 1: be happening going forward. He said the gift would no
[7:45] Speaker 1: longer be happening and he would expect the full rent
[7:48] Speaker 1: at the end of the month with no excuses. He
[7:50] Speaker 1: said the rent would stay at $ 1600 until our lease
[7:52] Speaker 1: was up for renewal at the end of the year
[7:54] Speaker 1: and when the lease was over, we are more than
[7:56] Speaker 1: welcome to renew it, but he will be charging us
[7:59] Speaker 1: market rate for the house. That's more than a $ 1, 000 increase.
[8:03] Speaker 1: I tried to talk to him, but he refused to
[8:05] Speaker 1: listen and then just walked out of the house. My
[8:07] Speaker 1: wife was white as a ghost on the couch and stammered,
[8:10] Speaker 1: asking what we were going to do because she knows
[8:13] Speaker 1: a $ 1, 000 increase in the rent will lead us back
[8:15] Speaker 1: to living paycheck to paycheck. My paycheck is enough to
[8:18] Speaker 1: cover every single bill until my promotion in 14 months.
[8:22] Speaker 1: I blew up and told her that this is her doing.
[8:24] Speaker 1: She asked me to run after G and talk to
[8:26] Speaker 1: him or to call him and try to talk to him,
[8:28] Speaker 1: but G is refusing. The only message I got back was,
[8:32] Speaker 1: please contact me if it has something to do with
[8:34] Speaker 1: the house, not for any personal matters, as our relationship
[8:37] Speaker 1: will only be strictly landlord and tenant and that is it.
[8:41] Speaker 1: My wife is frantically trying to call G and apologize,
[8:44] Speaker 1: but he's not answering her calls. She knows her part-time
[8:46] Speaker 1: job paycheck might not be enough. and I told her
[8:49] Speaker 1: we would need to downsize. She's not happy. I'm not
[8:52] Speaker 1: happy with my wife at all, and she's calling me
[8:55] Speaker 1: a jerk because I'm mad at her. $ 1, 000 doesn't sound
[8:58] Speaker 1: like a lot to some, but for me, it's a
[9:00] Speaker 1: lot of money. My wife's paycheck would not even have
[9:03] Speaker 1: been touched for rent or anything, but now it has
[9:05] Speaker 1: to be, and I told her she will cover the $ 1, 000
[9:08] Speaker 1: if she wants to stay in this house, as I
[9:10] Speaker 1: refuse to take up longer hours or more shifts. She's
[9:13] Speaker 1: devastated because her part-time job salary might not be enough.
[9:17] Speaker 1: and she will have to go back to working full-time.
[9:19] Speaker 1: The situation sounds rough, I know, but as I said,
[9:22] Speaker 1: I'm up for a promotion at work for my manager's
[9:24] Speaker 1: job when he retires in 14 months. I'm assured the job,
[9:28] Speaker 1: and I have it in writing. The increase is enough
[9:30] Speaker 1: for my wife to work only part-time, but that will
[9:33] Speaker 1: only be in 14 months, and she has to cover
[9:35] Speaker 1: the missing $ 1, 000 for the rent, as I'm refusing. I
[9:38] Speaker 1: don't want to move, but if she doesn't cover the
[9:40] Speaker 1: missing $ 1, 000 or can't, then we'll have to. EDIT I
[9:45] Speaker 1: asked my wife if G had done something or said
[9:47] Speaker 1: something to her that caused her to react like this,
[9:50] Speaker 1: and she, in tears, told me no, but she can't
[9:52] Speaker 1: or won't give me a reason. In my mind, I
[9:55] Speaker 1: took what she said at face value, and I believe
[9:57] Speaker 1: that she thinks G was looking down on us, as
[9:59] Speaker 1: she said, when he made the offer. That $ 500 would
[10:02] Speaker 1: have helped us monumentally, and my wife knows that. She
[10:05] Speaker 1: also knows getting a house like the one we currently have,
[10:08] Speaker 1: and as good as we have it, is not guaranteed,
[10:10] Speaker 1: because we have read numerous stories on Reddit about other landlords,
[10:14] Speaker 1: and she herself has always known how lucky we've been.
[10:16] Speaker 1: Edit 2 I didn't explain this properly at first. Our
[10:20] Speaker 1: lease is up for renewal but our lease will basically
[10:23] Speaker 1: be cancelled and not renewed. We will have to reapply
[10:26] Speaker 1: for the lease and the new amount will be market rate.
[10:28] Speaker 1: He said that because we've been good tenants so far,
[10:31] Speaker 1: he will give us the first option for the house.
[10:34] Speaker 1: And I know that this sounds crappy of me but
[10:36] Speaker 1: I am more than sure that G has never hooked
[10:38] Speaker 1: up with my wife and I know that she's never
[10:40] Speaker 1: cheated on me. I've never met a man more set
[10:43] Speaker 1: on morals and principles. He still wears his wedding ring
[10:45] Speaker 1: even though his wife has been passed for 10 years.
[10:48] Speaker 1: When I asked him about a woman or a girlfriend
[10:50] Speaker 1: in his life, he said no. His wife is waiting
[10:53] Speaker 1: for him and he will not disappoint her. Dang, she
[10:57] Speaker 1: messed up. I would be absolutely livid. I don't think
[11:00] Speaker 1: I could even stay with my husband if he pulled
[11:02] Speaker 1: something like this. I'd look at him in a whole
[11:04] Speaker 1: new light. Not the jerk. Yeah, it crossed my mind
[11:08] Speaker 1: how humiliating it would be to be married to someone
[11:11] Speaker 1: who would act this way. It would go a long
[11:13] Speaker 1: way to souring a relationship altogether for me. Am I
[11:17] Speaker 1: the jerk for laughing in my sister-in-law's face when she
[11:20] Speaker 1: DNA tested my daughter? I'm a 30-year-old man and I
[11:23] Speaker 1: have a 6-year-old daughter. I'm not biologically related to her
[11:26] Speaker 1: at all. There is no blood relation between us. I
[11:30] Speaker 1: was friends with her mother for most of my childhood.
[11:32] Speaker 1: We were always just friends. She had her daughter at
[11:35] Speaker 1: 23 with her 25-year-old husband. When my daughter was a newborn,
[11:39] Speaker 1: about 3 months old, both her mother and father passed away.
[11:42] Speaker 1: I won't go into too much detail for privacy reasons
[11:45] Speaker 1: but it was a workplace accident and My friend and
[11:47] Speaker 1: her husband worked in the same building. Both my friend
[11:50] Speaker 1: and her husband grew up in less than ideal families
[11:52] Speaker 1: and didn't have any siblings, so there wasn't any next
[11:55] Speaker 1: of kin for their daughter to go to. However, because
[11:58] Speaker 1: I was close with them, I was able to adopt her.
[12:01] Speaker 1: Even though I was iffy about the idea of having kids,
[12:03] Speaker 1: I didn't want their daughter to grow up in foster
[12:05] Speaker 1: care or around people who didn't have a connection to
[12:07] Speaker 1: her biological parents, so I stepped in. My parents and
[12:11] Speaker 1: siblings know that my daughter is not my biological daughter.
[12:14] Speaker 1: My daughter, whom I'll call Lily for this post, also
[12:17] Speaker 1: knows she's adopted and she knows what happened to her parents.
[12:20] Speaker 1: Lily does not look like me at all. She looks
[12:23] Speaker 1: exactly like her mother and biological father. Most people assume
[12:26] Speaker 1: that I'm her biological dad and that she just takes
[12:28] Speaker 1: after her mom. I don't usually correct people when they
[12:31] Speaker 1: assume this because it just seems unnecessary. My brother has
[12:35] Speaker 1: been with his fiancé for about two years now. A
[12:37] Speaker 1: few weeks ago, we were all meeting up in my
[12:39] Speaker 1: parents' house and my sister-in-law saw an old picture of me,
[12:42] Speaker 1: my friend, and her husband. She pointed to my friend
[12:45] Speaker 1: and asked who she was and I explained that was
[12:47] Speaker 1: Lily's mother. My sister-in-law got quiet and stood in front
[12:51] Speaker 1: of the picture for a while. I didn't think much
[12:53] Speaker 1: of it. To clarify, she knows my friend passed but
[12:56] Speaker 1: I guess she didn't know that she had been married
[12:58] Speaker 1: or that Lily is not my biological daughter. I suppose
[13:01] Speaker 1: she assumed Lily was mine and my friend's biological daughter.
[13:05] Speaker 1: My sister-in-law got a DNA test done on Lily behind
[13:08] Speaker 1: my back. She used my brother's DNA for the test
[13:11] Speaker 1: and when he came back that they weren't related, she
[13:13] Speaker 1: realized that meant Lily and I weren't related. She came
[13:17] Speaker 1: up to me with the results and waved them in
[13:18] Speaker 1: my face, saying that I was taking care of an
[13:21] Speaker 1: affair baby. She said this to me in front of
[13:23] Speaker 1: my daughter. I just stared at her for a while
[13:25] Speaker 1: before bursting out laughing. I told her I knew Lily
[13:28] Speaker 1: wasn't my biological daughter and that this thing called adoption exists.
[13:33] Speaker 1: Her face went red and she stormed off. My brother
[13:36] Speaker 1: is mad that I embarrassed his fiancée But I said
[13:38] Speaker 1: she embarrassed herself by DNA testing my kid and then
[13:41] Speaker 1: parading the results in front of me. What did she
[13:44] Speaker 1: expect me to do? What was her goal with this?
[13:46] Speaker 1: Did she want me to break down and leave my daughter?
[13:49] Speaker 1: My brother said that she thought she was doing the
[13:51] Speaker 1: right thing and called me a jerk. I don't feel
[13:53] Speaker 1: like a jerk, especially considering my sister-in-law was the one
[13:56] Speaker 1: who stuck her nose where it didn't belong. So, was
[13:59] Speaker 1: I the jerk? Not the jerk. Not only did your
[14:03] Speaker 1: sister-in-law cross a major line by DNA testing her without
[14:06] Speaker 1: your permission, but the theatrical way she presented her findings
[14:10] Speaker 1: is shockingly insensitive. Forget a pot stirrer, she's operating a
[14:14] Speaker 1: drama cauldron. You have every right to be upset, and
[14:17] Speaker 1: your brother needs a wake-up call about the boundaries his
[14:19] Speaker 1: future wife is willing to bulldoze. Navy wife's view of
[14:24] Speaker 1: infidelity is troubling. I, 30 male, work for a defense contractor,
[14:29] Speaker 1: which is how I met my wife, Carol, who's 31.
[14:32] Speaker 1: We had worked together for a couple of years before dating,
[14:35] Speaker 1: and after dating for only six months, she proposed to me.
[14:38] Speaker 1: We just celebrated our second wedding anniversary. Carol is a U.S.
[14:42] Speaker 1: Navy LCDR, and her role is mostly land-based with some
[14:45] Speaker 1: special sea duty deployments, short term. I'm friends with several
[14:49] Speaker 1: of the officers and families in her department, and we
[14:52] Speaker 1: are very social, like an extended family. Most of her
[14:55] Speaker 1: department is on a three-month deployment with a carrier group,
[14:58] Speaker 1: the longest time we have spent apart since we started dating.
[15:01] Speaker 1: They've been gone for over a month, and three of
[15:03] Speaker 1: the wives of her officers and I have been running
[15:05] Speaker 1: every morning. We sometimes go out for drinks and keep
[15:08] Speaker 1: each other company as most are far from any family
[15:10] Speaker 1: or long-term friends. Last weekend, we were at a local
[15:13] Speaker 1: bar and Mary, who's 25, who is married to one
[15:17] Speaker 1: of my wife's junior officers, Tom, got really drunk. At
[15:20] Speaker 1: the end of the night, I took away her keys
[15:22] Speaker 1: as she was determined to drive home. I ended up
[15:25] Speaker 1: taking her home. They live in on-base housing and I
[15:28] Speaker 1: walked and carried her to her door. I got her
[15:30] Speaker 1: door open and she tried to get me to come in.
[15:32] Speaker 1: She grabbed me and started kissing me and asked me
[15:35] Speaker 1: to stay. I got out of there as quickly as
[15:37] Speaker 1: I could. The next morning, she called and apologized for
[15:40] Speaker 1: the night before and asked if I could take her
[15:42] Speaker 1: back to the bar to retrieve her car. I picked
[15:44] Speaker 1: her up and on the way to the bar, she
[15:46] Speaker 1: said she was just feeling lonely but that she was
[15:48] Speaker 1: attracted to me. She suggested we could help each other
[15:51] Speaker 1: while our spouses are away. I told her I was
[15:54] Speaker 1: flattered but I could never cheat on my wife. Neri
[15:57] Speaker 1: said it wasn't exactly cheating but I shut the conversation down.
[16:01] Speaker 1: Carol and I had a FaceTime chat where I told
[16:03] Speaker 1: her about the event and asked if I needed to
[16:05] Speaker 1: reach out to Tom to tell him or if that
[16:07] Speaker 1: was something my wife would rather do. She gave a
[16:10] Speaker 1: big sigh and looked sad but said that we should
[16:12] Speaker 1: just leave it be for now. She said sadly that
[16:15] Speaker 1: this was not unusual and it happens on both sides.
[16:18] Speaker 1: She has unofficially reprimanded one of her officers for engaging
[16:21] Speaker 1: with a non-com since being on board. She doesn't want
[16:24] Speaker 1: to tell Tom because it would distract him from his
[16:26] Speaker 1: duties and cause stress since there's nothing he can really
[16:29] Speaker 1: do about it right now. Additionally, it could start a
[16:31] Speaker 1: conversation that might force her to take action as his
[16:34] Speaker 1: commanding officer if he's in an open relationship or if
[16:37] Speaker 1: he knows that she's cheating. Her group must maintain a
[16:40] Speaker 1: high security clearance and this could jeopardize his clearance. Then
[16:44] Speaker 1: she said something that I can't stop worrying about. As
[16:46] Speaker 1: long as Mary is discreet and it doesn't affect their
[16:49] Speaker 1: relationship when Tom returns, then she sees it as no
[16:52] Speaker 1: harm no foul. She went on to say that if
[16:54] Speaker 1: she were Tom, she would rather not know as long
[16:56] Speaker 1: as we were happy. I don't know if this was
[16:59] Speaker 1: her giving me permission to cheat without coming out and
[17:01] Speaker 1: saying it, or worse, is she saying that she could
[17:04] Speaker 1: justify cheating on me so long as it didn't directly
[17:06] Speaker 1: affect me? It bothers me that we can't talk in
[17:09] Speaker 1: person for another 8 weeks until she gets back. Update.
[17:13] Speaker 1: I woke up this morning to an email from my
[17:15] Speaker 1: wife and now I'm late for work, but I just
[17:17] Speaker 1: don't care. The email started off with how I should
[17:20] Speaker 1: deal with Mary. She asked me not to say anything
[17:22] Speaker 1: to anyone about what happened and that I should continue
[17:25] Speaker 1: to be cordial with Mary. It's also better if I
[17:27] Speaker 1: avoid times when we are both alone together. She's reaching
[17:30] Speaker 1: out to one of the wives to watch over Mary.
[17:32] Speaker 1: The video. First thing I noticed in this video was
[17:36] Speaker 1: her hair down, her makeup, and her being out of
[17:39] Speaker 1: uniform and wearing one of my shirts that she took
[17:41] Speaker 1: with her. She said she had mixed feelings about our
[17:43] Speaker 1: last conversation and how she left things. After my email,
[17:47] Speaker 1: she realized she might have foobarred everything. The video was
[17:50] Speaker 1: 20 minutes long with at least two noticeable pauses after
[17:53] Speaker 1: she started tearing up. I saw a very mushy and
[17:56] Speaker 1: vulnerable side of my wife that I had never seen
[17:58] Speaker 1: before and it hurt me that I couldn't hug her afterwards.
[18:01] Speaker 1: Whatever doubts or fears I had were squashed this morning.
[18:04] Speaker 1: I just finished watching the video for the fourth time
[18:06] Speaker 1: and I can't get to the end without almost breaking down.
[18:09] Speaker 1: She wants me to plan a week away after she
[18:11] Speaker 1: gets back. I'm confused. What does she think she foobarred?
[18:16] Speaker 1: The video was the night before or another FaceTime the
[18:18] Speaker 1: next morning? What does her hair and makeup mean? Did
[18:21] Speaker 1: she wake up and realize she basically told her hubby
[18:23] Speaker 1: cheating is okay? I'm not following. OP. The FaceTime call
[18:28] Speaker 1: was when I told her about Mary hitting on me
[18:30] Speaker 1: and she told me the things that kind of triggered me.
[18:32] Speaker 1: The video was almost two days later after she realized
[18:35] Speaker 1: some of what she told me was confusing and I
[18:37] Speaker 1: emailed her that I was struggling with what she said.
[18:40] Speaker 1: She's on board a carrier group at the moment with
[18:42] Speaker 1: almost no makeup and her hair high and tight most
[18:44] Speaker 1: of the time. She took the time to fix her
[18:47] Speaker 1: hair and put on extra makeup to look nice for me. Plus,
[18:49] Speaker 1: she had taken a couple of my shirts with her
[18:51] Speaker 1: and had put one on instead of her khakis. The
[18:54] Speaker 1: extra effort was not lost on me. The part about
[18:57] Speaker 1: her not wanting to know and no harm no foul
[18:59] Speaker 1: came at the end of her phone time and we
[19:01] Speaker 1: didn't get to talk it out. Just like me, she
[19:04] Speaker 1: felt like the way she left it was troubling and
[19:06] Speaker 1: it had already been bothering her even before she got
[19:08] Speaker 1: my email. She took two shirts that I like to
[19:11] Speaker 1: wear around the house and a small bottle of my
[19:13] Speaker 1: cologne with her. She says it makes her feel better
[19:15] Speaker 1: and helps her fall asleep faster. UPDATE My wife's group
[19:20] Speaker 1: is getting liberty later this month and my company is
[19:22] Speaker 1: arranging for me to be on site for some tech
[19:24] Speaker 1: support a few days before they make port. This will
[19:27] Speaker 1: give us 48 hours together before they leave port again.
[19:30] Speaker 1: My new dilemma is that the officer's wife, Mary, who
[19:33] Speaker 1: made a pass at me, has reached out to me again,
[19:35] Speaker 1: this time to apologize and explain. My wife had reached
[19:39] Speaker 1: out to another older wife to counsel Mary about the
[19:41] Speaker 1: repercussions of inappropriate behavior and to keep an eye on
[19:44] Speaker 1: her for a while. Mary apologized to me for putting
[19:47] Speaker 1: me in a bad position and also expressed her disappointment
[19:50] Speaker 1: that I had told my wife about what had happened.
[19:52] Speaker 1: Then she proceeded to explain she wasn't cheating on her
[19:55] Speaker 1: husband because they had an open marriage and were free
[19:57] Speaker 1: to see others when the Navy separated them. Since I
[20:00] Speaker 1: was so friendly with the other wives, she assumed that
[20:03] Speaker 1: I had a similar arrangement with my wife. I accepted
[20:06] Speaker 1: her apology and said I was flattered but I wasn't interested.
[20:09] Speaker 1: The dilemma is, do I pass this information on to
[20:12] Speaker 1: my wife? On one hand, I know this is information
[20:14] Speaker 1: she would rather not know, especially while they're deployed. But
[20:18] Speaker 1: she might need to know if she plans on telling
[20:19] Speaker 1: him at some point about his wife's indiscretions. It could
[20:22] Speaker 1: be an awkward conversation where he either doesn't act surprised
[20:25] Speaker 1: or upset or he might come clean about their relationship.
[20:28] Speaker 1: In almost any case, my wife will be put in
[20:30] Speaker 1: a situation where she might feel compelled to take action
[20:33] Speaker 1: she would rather not take. Hey OP, you did the
[20:37] Speaker 1: right thing by telling your wife the first time. You
[20:39] Speaker 1: are protecting your relationship with your wife by being honest.
[20:42] Speaker 1: By holding this new information to yourself, you're doing the
[20:44] Speaker 1: right thing again. Your wife likely expressed that she doesn't
[20:47] Speaker 1: want to know because the officer hasn't done anything wrong,
[20:50] Speaker 1: only the spouse has. The spouse's actions don't matter from
[20:53] Speaker 1: the UCMJ's perspective and neither do yours. Cheating won't get
[20:57] Speaker 1: her family thrown off base or her husband reprimanded unless
[21:00] Speaker 1: he knew about it. I don't see anyone mentioning operational
[21:03] Speaker 1: capacity here. If this officer is relieved of his post,
[21:06] Speaker 1: there isn't likely to be a replacement. the entire crew
[21:09] Speaker 1: will have increased responsibilities for the duration of the deployment.
[21:13] Speaker 1: By giving him the information directly when he gets home,
[21:15] Speaker 1: you give him the opportunity to protect himself, thereby protecting
[21:18] Speaker 1: your wife from command issues. There's nothing wrong with protecting
[21:21] Speaker 1: someone when you have the ability to. You're protecting a
[21:24] Speaker 1: lot more than just the husband by keeping this information private.
[21:27] Speaker 1: The officer's corps is woven together and losing one officer
[21:30] Speaker 1: can affect dozens or hundreds of other people, commissioned and enlisted. OP,
[21:36] Speaker 1: your assessment was spot on. Her biggest concern was having
[21:39] Speaker 1: to relieve him and not having anyone competent to fulfill
[21:42] Speaker 1: his duties. Her teams were already spread pretty thin and
[21:45] Speaker 1: were struggling to keep their timetables. Military life is weird. Honestly,
[21:52] Speaker 1: no disrespect to anyone in the military, but it sounds
[21:54] Speaker 1: like poison for a relationship. There's a reason the divorce
[21:58] Speaker 1: rate is twice as high among military than civilians. There
[22:01] Speaker 1: are hurdles to the relationship that don't exist for almost
[22:04] Speaker 1: any other career. Am I wrong for ghosting my ex
[22:08] Speaker 1: because she's married now? My friends think I'm wrong for
[22:12] Speaker 1: blocking my ex, who is married, because she keeps calling
[22:14] Speaker 1: and messaging me. I wanted to ask if what I'm
[22:17] Speaker 1: doing is right or if I should keep in touch
[22:18] Speaker 1: with her. I dated Lisa for four years and we
[22:21] Speaker 1: broke up two years ago. Lisa told me she didn't
[22:24] Speaker 1: see a future with me and wanted to call things off.
[22:26] Speaker 1: There were many reasons and I knew it was coming.
[22:29] Speaker 1: Lisa came from a wealthy family and we met in college.
[22:32] Speaker 1: Our relationship was great during the college years. However, after
[22:35] Speaker 1: we graduated and got jobs, it became clear that I
[22:38] Speaker 1: would never be able to provide the lifestyle she was
[22:40] Speaker 1: used to. She hated the small apartment we rented because
[22:43] Speaker 1: I wanted to pay off my student loans quickly and
[22:45] Speaker 1: she resented that I couldn't afford to take her on
[22:47] Speaker 1: nice vacations. It sucked but I couldn't blame her. I
[22:51] Speaker 1: loved Lisa deeply but I also knew she deserved the
[22:54] Speaker 1: life she wanted. After we broke up, we still had
[22:56] Speaker 1: lingering feelings and stayed friends for a few months. We
[22:59] Speaker 1: had mutual friends and would meet regularly. I never hated Lisa.
[23:03] Speaker 1: In fact, I cherish the memories of the four years
[23:05] Speaker 1: we were together but I was also acutely aware that
[23:08] Speaker 1: we came from different worlds and that she shouldn't have
[23:10] Speaker 1: to settle because of me. Still, it was hard to
[23:13] Speaker 1: let go completely and sometimes I wondered if I'd ever
[23:16] Speaker 1: truly get over her. We drifted apart after Lisa started
[23:19] Speaker 1: dating a family friend. I met him a few times
[23:22] Speaker 1: at parties. He knew Lisa and I had dated and
[23:24] Speaker 1: though he was polite, I started avoiding her and focused
[23:27] Speaker 1: on work. Eventually, I moved to another city and lost
[23:30] Speaker 1: touch with Lisa. I heard from mutual friends that she
[23:33] Speaker 1: got married six months ago. I wasn't invited to the wedding,
[23:36] Speaker 1: but I was happy for her. I also dated someone
[23:38] Speaker 1: briefly last year, but right now, my career is my
[23:41] Speaker 1: main focus. That's what I need to believe. Three weeks ago,
[23:45] Speaker 1: out of the blue, I get a call from an
[23:46] Speaker 1: unknown number. It was Lisa. She started with small talk
[23:50] Speaker 1: and we caught up on each other's lives. She told
[23:52] Speaker 1: me about the new house that she and her husband
[23:54] Speaker 1: had just bought and how busy she'd been. I told
[23:57] Speaker 1: her about my work and my new life. It was nice,
[24:00] Speaker 1: like catching up with an old friend. She gave me
[24:02] Speaker 1: her new number and the call lasted about 20 minutes.
[24:05] Speaker 1: Although I found it odd, I figured she might have
[24:08] Speaker 1: thought about me and decided to reach out. The next day,
[24:10] Speaker 1: she messaged me and sent me a few photos of
[24:13] Speaker 1: her new house. I complimented her on them. Two days later,
[24:16] Speaker 1: she called me again, saying she was driving and thought
[24:18] Speaker 1: about chatting. We talked about my new city, my new friends,
[24:22] Speaker 1: and even gossiped about our old mutual friends. Then she
[24:25] Speaker 1: started sending me photos from a recent party where they
[24:27] Speaker 1: all met up. Over the next two weeks, Lisa began
[24:30] Speaker 1: calling me almost every day. I ignored most of her
[24:33] Speaker 1: calls but she always said she had free time and
[24:35] Speaker 1: wanted to talk. She started sending me TikToks, memes and messages,
[24:39] Speaker 1: initiating conversations all the time. At first, I brushed it
[24:43] Speaker 1: off thinking she was just being friendly but it felt wrong.
[24:46] Speaker 1: Lisa is married and I shouldn't be talking to her
[24:48] Speaker 1: so frequently. The more she reaches out, the more unsettled
[24:51] Speaker 1: I became. Was she unhappy in her marriage? Was she
[24:54] Speaker 1: just lonely? Or was I reading too much into it?
[24:57] Speaker 1: Last Friday, I finally messaged her saying that it felt
[25:00] Speaker 1: inappropriate for us to talk so often, given that she's
[25:02] Speaker 1: married now. She replied almost immediately, saying there's nothing wrong
[25:06] Speaker 1: with us being good friends like before. I didn't want
[25:08] Speaker 1: to continue, so I told her that we needed to
[25:10] Speaker 1: stop talking for a while because I needed to focus
[25:13] Speaker 1: on work. After that, I blocked her number. She called
[25:16] Speaker 1: our mutual friend Jess, crying about how I was rude
[25:19] Speaker 1: and blocked her. Jess told our other friends, and some
[25:21] Speaker 1: of them called me, saying I was being unreasonable to
[25:24] Speaker 1: treat Lisa that way and cut her off. I don't
[25:26] Speaker 1: understand how no one sees that it's wrong for Lisa
[25:29] Speaker 1: to call her ex when she's happily married after more
[25:31] Speaker 1: than a year of no contact. It doesn't make sense,
[25:34] Speaker 1: but maybe I'm the one who's missing something. Am I
[25:36] Speaker 1: being unreasonable with Lisa or was it right for me
[25:39] Speaker 1: to block her for both our sakes? And if I'm right,
[25:42] Speaker 1: why do I still feel so conflicted? You had very
[25:45] Speaker 1: good reasons for being uncomfortable with this very weird situation.
[25:48] Speaker 1: I don't understand where those so-called friends are insisting that
[25:52] Speaker 1: you owe it to your ex to carry on whatever
[25:54] Speaker 1: sort of emotional affair there was. She is anything but
[25:58] Speaker 1: happily married. Don't let her draw you into her BS drama.
[26:01] Speaker 1: Happily married people aren't sniffing around their exes. The penny
[26:06] Speaker 1: has dropped for Lisa that her new husband just doesn't
[26:08] Speaker 1: cut it and she got married for all the wrong reasons.
[26:11] Speaker 1: OP is right to go no contact. She made her
[26:14] Speaker 1: bed and it's time to lie in it. My Karen
[26:17] Speaker 1: roommate stole from me so her wallet vanished. Back in college,
[26:21] Speaker 1: I had better credit than my three other roommates, so
[26:23] Speaker 1: I put our internet and TV under my name, otherwise
[26:26] Speaker 1: the deposit would have been $ 600. The cable company offered
[26:30] Speaker 1: me a $ 300 Visa gift card upon sign-up. Two months later,
[26:34] Speaker 1: I called them because the gift card never arrived. They
[26:37] Speaker 1: tell me that they sent it a few weeks ago,
[26:39] Speaker 1: and eventually I'm able to find out from Visa that
[26:41] Speaker 1: someone used it at the Whataburger, Target, and liquor store
[26:44] Speaker 1: near my house. I'm ticked off because obviously one of
[26:47] Speaker 1: my roommates had used it, but I didn't know which one.
[26:51] Speaker 1: A few weeks later, roommate number two complains that their
[26:54] Speaker 1: $ 200 birthday gift card to Target has gone missing. His
[26:58] Speaker 1: mom still had the receipt and the store was able
[27:00] Speaker 1: to tell her that someone used it at the Target
[27:02] Speaker 1: near our house. He's obviously ticked off too, but we've
[27:05] Speaker 1: now realized it's probably one of the other two roommates.
[27:08] Speaker 1: A couple of weeks after that, roommate number three's wallet disappears.
[27:12] Speaker 1: We turn the house upside down looking for it and
[27:14] Speaker 1: we knew it had to be in the house because
[27:16] Speaker 1: her car key is attached to her wallet. and her
[27:18] Speaker 1: car is parked at the house. She is absolutely frantic, sobbing, screaming, hyperventilating, etc.
[27:24] Speaker 1: Throwing crap everywhere and just having an absolute meltdown while
[27:27] Speaker 1: tearing the house apart. We had never seen her behave
[27:30] Speaker 1: like this, so we're all kind of surprised she'd be
[27:32] Speaker 1: that upset about her wallet. It's stressful, sure, but I
[27:36] Speaker 1: genuinely was concerned about how she was reacting. She says
[27:39] Speaker 1: the gift card thief must have taken it, implying that
[27:41] Speaker 1: it's roommate number 4, the only person who hasn't had
[27:44] Speaker 1: something stolen yet. A few days after that, I found
[27:47] Speaker 1: her wallet in the trunk of my car. We had
[27:49] Speaker 1: gone to get groceries together and I guess she had
[27:51] Speaker 1: just laid it in the trunk while we were unloading.
[27:54] Speaker 1: I'm like, whoa, I found your wallet. And then I
[27:56] Speaker 1: open it up because I'm just excited to confirm that
[27:59] Speaker 1: I did indeed find her wallet. Bam, both stolen gift
[28:02] Speaker 1: cards front and center. No doubt. The Visa gift card
[28:06] Speaker 1: has my name printed on it and roommate number two's
[28:08] Speaker 1: mom had written something in Sharpie on his gift card.
[28:11] Speaker 1: I realized she had a meltdown because she was afraid
[28:14] Speaker 1: we'd find out that she was the thief. I left
[28:16] Speaker 1: the wallet, cash and all, right where it was, pushed
[28:19] Speaker 1: up against the inner lip of the trunk so you
[28:21] Speaker 1: couldn't see it unless you leaned further into the car.
[28:24] Speaker 1: A locksmith wouldn't make her new keys without the title,
[28:27] Speaker 1: and the title was in the glove box of her
[28:28] Speaker 1: locked car. All in all, she spent about $ 500 replacing
[28:32] Speaker 1: her driver's license, title, and keys, not to mention not
[28:35] Speaker 1: being able to drive her car for two weeks. I
[28:38] Speaker 1: moved out of state with her wallet still in my car,
[28:41] Speaker 1: finally tossed it in the trash several months later. Sometimes
[28:44] Speaker 1: the universe assists you with petty revenge. Sorry if you
[28:47] Speaker 1: see this, Chelsea. It was me. This happened over 10
[28:50] Speaker 1: years ago and I'm happy to report that we've all
[28:52] Speaker 1: gone to therapy since then and we're thankfully no longer
[28:55] Speaker 1: terrible human beings. A couple of things to address. Why
[28:58] Speaker 1: didn't you confront her? I hated confrontation. I was a
[29:01] Speaker 1: huge people pleaser and I wanted everyone to like me
[29:04] Speaker 1: and I enjoyed watching her suffer. Again, therapy. I'm thankfully
[29:08] Speaker 1: no longer like this. Visa gift cards don't have names.
[29:11] Speaker 1: Some of them do. The Target gift card itself said
[29:14] Speaker 1: happy birthday and my friend's mom wrote to my favorite
[29:17] Speaker 1: son underneath. It was still semi-legible when I found her wallet.
[29:21] Speaker 1: Locksmiths don't make car keys. Apparently some do. In the end,
[29:25] Speaker 1: she had her car towed to the dealership. I do
[29:27] Speaker 1: remember she called a locksmith the first day her wallet
[29:30] Speaker 1: was missing because she initially thought it was in her car.
[29:33] Speaker 1: She was super mad that the locksmith charged her for
[29:35] Speaker 1: the weekend visit without actually unlocking her car. Was he
[29:38] Speaker 1: taking advantage of a stupid college kid's Maybe. This was
[29:41] Speaker 1: over a decade ago. I was 21 and I'm sure
[29:44] Speaker 1: that my brain did not fully absorb the details of
[29:46] Speaker 1: her whole ordeal. Turn her into the cops. Bro, have
[29:50] Speaker 1: you met college students? Do you know how much illegal
[29:53] Speaker 1: stuff they do? It briefly crossed my mind but petty
[29:55] Speaker 1: revenge was far more satisfying. She had an absolute meltdown
[29:59] Speaker 1: and missed a few days of work at a newish
[30:01] Speaker 1: job dealing with all of this. Am I the jerk
[30:04] Speaker 1: for telling my son's pregnant girlfriend that if she keeps
[30:07] Speaker 1: disrespecting me, I'll kick her out of my house? I, 43, female,
[30:11] Speaker 1: have a son who's 18, who got his high school girlfriend,
[30:14] Speaker 1: who was also 18, pregnant. It was obviously an unplanned pregnancy,
[30:18] Speaker 1: and it resulted in my son's girlfriend getting kicked out
[30:20] Speaker 1: of her house by her mom. I never liked the girl,
[30:23] Speaker 1: but I obviously couldn't let her live on the streets
[30:25] Speaker 1: now that she's carrying my grandbaby, so I let her
[30:27] Speaker 1: live in our house. Now both she and my son
[30:30] Speaker 1: gave up on college for the near future, and my
[30:32] Speaker 1: son is now working a full-time job so he can
[30:34] Speaker 1: provide for them in the future. The problem is that
[30:37] Speaker 1: his girlfriend refuses to do anything, absolutely anything all day.
[30:41] Speaker 1: She just locks herself in my son's room eating snacks
[30:44] Speaker 1: and watching videos on my son's computer. I need to
[30:47] Speaker 1: drag her out to just help me with cooking and
[30:49] Speaker 1: to clean up at least the room she's staying in.
[30:51] Speaker 1: but she's always complaining about how I'm working her like
[30:53] Speaker 1: a slave, even though she's already in constant pain because
[30:56] Speaker 1: of her pregnancy, and then she'll come crying to my
[30:59] Speaker 1: son about the treatment of her. Mind you, she doesn't
[31:01] Speaker 1: have a high-risk pregnancy. I know that because my husband
[31:04] Speaker 1: and I are the ones who are fully paying for
[31:06] Speaker 1: her medical controls, and I don't put her up to
[31:08] Speaker 1: do tasks like cleaning the toilet or anything similar. However,
[31:12] Speaker 1: she really crossed the line when after I got dressed up,
[31:15] Speaker 1: she asked me where I was going, and I told
[31:17] Speaker 1: her I was getting ready for church. Her exact response was,
[31:20] Speaker 1: I didn't know there were churches that allowed people to
[31:22] Speaker 1: dress the way that you are. At that point, I
[31:25] Speaker 1: absolutely had it with her. And I told her straight
[31:27] Speaker 1: up that I don't care who she is. I won't
[31:29] Speaker 1: allow her to disrespect me while living in my house.
[31:32] Speaker 1: And if she can't keep her attitude in check, then
[31:34] Speaker 1: she can get out of my house. She pretty much
[31:36] Speaker 1: started crying at that point and immediately called my son,
[31:39] Speaker 1: who later on also gave me an attitude for treating
[31:42] Speaker 1: his girlfriend like garbage when I don't know what she's
[31:44] Speaker 1: going through. Eye roll. My husband also thinks that while
[31:48] Speaker 1: she was definitely out of line, that she was probably
[31:50] Speaker 1: only acting out because of pregnancy hormones and that I
[31:53] Speaker 1: could have handled the situation better without straight up threatening
[31:56] Speaker 1: to leave her homeless. Am I the jerk? Not the jerk.
[32:00] Speaker 1: You should make it clear to your son that his
[32:02] Speaker 1: girlfriend needs to earn her keep ASAP. Do this next.
