[0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome to r Slasham the Jerk, where OPI finds out
[0:03] Speaker 1: her boyfriend's been cheating with her mom. My little brother,
[0:07] Speaker 1: who's three, is actually my fiance's kid. My fiance, twenty
[0:11] Speaker 1: five male, and myself twenty four female, have been together
[0:14] Speaker 1: since we were about eighteen. Honestly, he was always kind, handsome, funny,
[0:18] Speaker 1: and everyone used to say I was so lucky to
[0:20] Speaker 1: have the whole package. I felt lucky too. He always
[0:23] Speaker 1: treated me with love and respect, so this makes everything
[0:26] Speaker 1: just so shocking for me. I've always had a good
[0:29] Speaker 1: relationship with my mom. It's always been her and I
[0:31] Speaker 1: against the world. My dad passed when I was little.
[0:34] Speaker 1: We always joked that we are the real life characters
[0:36] Speaker 1: from Gilmore Girls. My mom dated guys on and off,
[0:39] Speaker 1: and they were usually cool, but nothing really passed the
[0:42] Speaker 1: early stages. Around four years ago, my mom told me
[0:45] Speaker 1: she was pregnant, which was a huge surprise. My mom
[0:48] Speaker 1: was around forty two years old, and although she was
[0:50] Speaker 1: sort of dating someone recently, didn't meet the guy, but
[0:53] Speaker 1: I knew they went on dates. It was still a
[0:55] Speaker 1: big shock. She never thought she could be pregnant at
[0:57] Speaker 1: her age. She had me when she was super young,
[1:00] Speaker 1: and I could tell she was stressed and worried. I
[1:02] Speaker 1: decided to support her since she had always supported me,
[1:05] Speaker 1: and I tried to reassure her. She then had my brother,
[1:07] Speaker 1: who's now three. I have a close relationship with my brother.
[1:11] Speaker 1: I've helped take care of him since he was born,
[1:12] Speaker 1: and I just loved the little guy. My fiance was
[1:15] Speaker 1: also super helpful with my brother. We would take him
[1:18] Speaker 1: out for ice cream, the playground, the pool, et cetera.
[1:21] Speaker 1: But nothing was weird. He was just my then boyfriend
[1:24] Speaker 1: spending time with my brother. And I now to how
[1:27] Speaker 1: I found out. My fiance and I lived together since
[1:30] Speaker 1: we finished college. My fiance was not at home since
[1:32] Speaker 1: he was hanging out with friends, but I was home
[1:34] Speaker 1: because I didn't feel like going out and I just
[1:36] Speaker 1: wanted to chill out on the sofa. At some point
[1:39] Speaker 1: during Binge Washing, a series on Netflix, my laptop died
[1:42] Speaker 1: and I was too lazy to go get my charger,
[1:44] Speaker 1: so I took my fiance's iPad. I know the password,
[1:47] Speaker 1: but honestly, i've never used it before. The iPad logged
[1:50] Speaker 1: in and I got a bunch of messages. I guess
[1:53] Speaker 1: he hadn't used it in a while. Anyways, this got
[1:55] Speaker 1: my attention and I went to check it out, and
[1:57] Speaker 1: of course I found everything. My mom his number wasn't
[2:00] Speaker 1: under her name, but I recognized the number and verified
[2:03] Speaker 1: it with my phone. She was telling him she felt
[2:05] Speaker 1: guilty and that I should know. He said he also
[2:08] Speaker 1: felt guilty, but couldn't lose me, and they really messed up.
[2:11] Speaker 1: She said that it was unfair for my brother to
[2:13] Speaker 1: never know his dad, and it wasn't right for him
[2:15] Speaker 1: to grow up thinking his dad was actually his brother
[2:18] Speaker 1: in law. I broke down, what the heck? There weren't
[2:22] Speaker 1: a lot of older messages, just some photos stored of
[2:24] Speaker 1: my brother as a newborn, my mom when she was pregnant,
[2:27] Speaker 1: and more photos of my brother growing up in an album.
[2:30] Speaker 1: I couldn't anymore. I cried for what seemed like ages
[2:33] Speaker 1: as I waited for my boyfriend to come back home.
[2:36] Speaker 1: I wish I was one of those women that can
[2:37] Speaker 1: pretend and get things together before confronting the cheater, but
[2:40] Speaker 1: I can't. He came back later that night and I
[2:43] Speaker 1: just gave him the iPad with the conversation opened, and
[2:46] Speaker 1: I saw his face completely go pale. I asked for
[2:49] Speaker 1: an explanation when, how, why, and he didn't want to
[2:53] Speaker 1: at first, but he knew he had to. Apparently, a
[2:55] Speaker 1: few years back, while I was traveling with some friends
[2:58] Speaker 1: a girl's trip, my fiance and mom had dinner together.
[3:01] Speaker 1: This isn't strange since he had been part of the
[3:03] Speaker 1: family for so long. Sometimes Mom and fiance would eat
[3:06] Speaker 1: together at our place, even if I was busy with sports.
[3:09] Speaker 1: I did the same with his parents somehow, unclear how,
[3:12] Speaker 1: since he couldn't explain it well, one thing led to
[3:15] Speaker 1: another and they ended up hooking up. They felt guilty,
[3:18] Speaker 1: but apparently not too guilty, because this happened two or
[3:21] Speaker 1: three more times, using the excuse of meeting up to
[3:23] Speaker 1: discuss how to tell me. Apparently, when my mom got pregnant,
[3:27] Speaker 1: they stopped hooking up and decided to not tell me
[3:30] Speaker 1: since my fiance loved me and couldn't lose me, and
[3:33] Speaker 1: my mom didn't want to lose her daughter. So here
[3:35] Speaker 1: we are now, with two of the most disgusting humans.
[3:38] Speaker 1: I obviously broke the engagement, told my mom to never
[3:41] Speaker 1: talk to me again, and moved in with a friend.
[3:44] Speaker 1: I feel bad for my brother, since I really love him,
[3:46] Speaker 1: but I can't be around him now, I just can't.
[3:48] Speaker 1: I feel like it would only remind me of all
[3:50] Speaker 1: those times we talked about having kids. I would be
[3:53] Speaker 1: his baby mama, his only baby mama. We talked about
[3:56] Speaker 1: this future since we were seventeen, So it makes me
[3:59] Speaker 1: sick every time I think about how I've actually been
[4:01] Speaker 1: taking care of his kid with someone else while still
[4:04] Speaker 1: having those dreams. Update as I was afraid, I was
[4:07] Speaker 1: indeed confronted near my office this week. I knew this
[4:10] Speaker 1: was coming, but I thought maybe I had more time.
[4:13] Speaker 1: My ex was the person to come find me. Yesterday,
[4:16] Speaker 1: after finishing work and walking to where my car was parked,
[4:18] Speaker 1: my ex was sort of lingering around waiting. I thought
[4:21] Speaker 1: about running, not gonna lie, but I guess in the moment,
[4:24] Speaker 1: I felt strong enough to get over with it instead
[4:26] Speaker 1: of having that hanging above my head waiting to be
[4:29] Speaker 1: approached again. He asked if we could talk, and I
[4:31] Speaker 1: said yes, but I didn't feel like having that conversation
[4:34] Speaker 1: over coffee like we were old friends. It felt ridiculous,
[4:37] Speaker 1: so I told him to just talk right there. We
[4:39] Speaker 1: were in the streets, but somehow it wasn't crowded. He
[4:42] Speaker 1: basically said sorry. One hundred times and that I deserved better.
[4:45] Speaker 1: I agree. He said he did love me and that
[4:48] Speaker 1: he still does, but he would understand why I wouldn't
[4:50] Speaker 1: want anything to do with him. He said that if
[4:53] Speaker 1: I did, in fact consider giving him a chance, that
[4:55] Speaker 1: he would go to therapy alone or together, or both,
[4:58] Speaker 1: and that he would work hard to win my trust back.
[5:00] Speaker 1: I told him it wasn't possible, there was too much damage.
[5:03] Speaker 1: This sounds calm when I type it, but in the
[5:05] Speaker 1: moment things came out loudly and harshly. Anyways, he did
[5:09] Speaker 1: say that he's in the process of getting custody, partly
[5:12] Speaker 1: from my brother, and that he in fact does want
[5:14] Speaker 1: to be a dad to him. He said he does
[5:16] Speaker 1: not want to be together with my mom, that it
[5:18] Speaker 1: was just a stupid mistake. He couldn't even explain why
[5:21] Speaker 1: he did it in the first place. I think he
[5:22] Speaker 1: doesn't even know why himself. I asked if he cheated
[5:25] Speaker 1: with someone else before, and he said no, not sure
[5:28] Speaker 1: if I believe him, but he sounded honest. I asked
[5:30] Speaker 1: why he didn't come clean, and he said that after
[5:32] Speaker 1: he did the deed, he always felt panicked and it
[5:35] Speaker 1: hits him that he could lose me and he just
[5:36] Speaker 1: didn't want to. I told him it was meant to
[5:39] Speaker 1: be found out, and what was his plan to have
[5:41] Speaker 1: my brother around and ignore their relationship forever. He said
[5:44] Speaker 1: he just hadn't thought that far ahead. I asked him
[5:47] Speaker 1: if he felt that my mom tricked him, and he
[5:49] Speaker 1: said no, it was mutual, which made me feel sick again.
[5:53] Speaker 1: I asked if he had any contact with my mom
[5:55] Speaker 1: since I found out. He said yes, but mostly about
[5:57] Speaker 1: my brother. He said he told his parents the day
[6:00] Speaker 1: day before about everything. The parents were not happy, but
[6:03] Speaker 1: they're glad to start building a relationship with my brother
[6:05] Speaker 1: now their grandkid. Honestly, all of this felt like a
[6:08] Speaker 1: punch in the gut. I just don't know. The parents
[6:11] Speaker 1: wanted to contact me, but he told them to wait
[6:13] Speaker 1: until he approached me first, which is why he was here.
[6:16] Speaker 1: He sounded and looked defeated, but the whole thing just
[6:19] Speaker 1: made me sad and angry. I was mainly depressed before,
[6:22] Speaker 1: but now I'm furious. I feel like he's still in
[6:25] Speaker 1: an okay place and he isn't pain for his actions.
[6:27] Speaker 1: Beyond leaving me, he will have my brother, his parents,
[6:30] Speaker 1: and others move on with his life while I lost everything.
[6:34] Speaker 1: I can't stand him. We parted ways, not on a
[6:36] Speaker 1: happy note, and I told him to never get near
[6:38] Speaker 1: me again. I was done. He asked me to see
[6:41] Speaker 1: my brother, still that I was important to him and
[6:44] Speaker 1: try to guilt trip me, and it worked. But I
[6:46] Speaker 1: still think I can't. I don't know much about my
[6:49] Speaker 1: mom and I really hope she doesn't come find me
[6:51] Speaker 1: anytime soon because I'm fuming right now and I won't
[6:53] Speaker 1: be able to handle it. I'll be contacting my family
[6:56] Speaker 1: and friends and finally doing the exposing today. I think
[6:59] Speaker 1: it's about and after my talk with him, I got
[7:02] Speaker 1: the extra push I needed. Update. This is how it
[7:06] Speaker 1: went down. I first posted on my family's Facebook group
[7:09] Speaker 1: that we share. This is from my mom's family side.
[7:12] Speaker 1: I used inspiration of what you all suggested in my
[7:14] Speaker 1: last post and said something around the lines of I
[7:17] Speaker 1: want to communicate to you all that my wedding has
[7:19] Speaker 1: been permanently canceled since I found out that my mom
[7:22] Speaker 1: and my ex had in the last few years been
[7:24] Speaker 1: hooking up, which resulted in the birth of my little brother.
[7:27] Speaker 1: I had no clue of any of this, and I
[7:29] Speaker 1: found out about it last week. I won't be having
[7:31] Speaker 1: a relationship with them moving forward for obvious reasons. I
[7:34] Speaker 1: would appreciate your understanding, and I felt it was only
[7:37] Speaker 1: fair to let you know of the situation, since I
[7:39] Speaker 1: valued transparency and honesty above all. It exploded, I had
[7:44] Speaker 1: family reaching out via text and calling the whole day.
[7:47] Speaker 1: I would say most were very supportive, and I could
[7:49] Speaker 1: tell that they were just shocked. There were a few neutral,
[7:52] Speaker 1: and some suspicious that it wasn't the whole story and
[7:55] Speaker 1: maybe I misunderstood. My grandparents were in the maybe you
[7:58] Speaker 1: misunderstood category, which it wasn't surprising since my mom is
[8:01] Speaker 1: super close to my grandparents, and like I said before,
[8:04] Speaker 1: my mom was always a good mom. I will be
[8:06] Speaker 1: moving in with a cousin that's more like a sister
[8:08] Speaker 1: to me. I haven't reached out to her previously because
[8:11] Speaker 1: I know that once she found out about it, everyone
[8:13] Speaker 1: would That's why I went to my friend's place. My
[8:16] Speaker 1: cousin is devastated on my behalf and offered that I
[8:18] Speaker 1: could live with her and her two kids until I
[8:21] Speaker 1: get back on my feet. I accept it, and I'll
[8:23] Speaker 1: be moving next week. I'm a bit afraid that this
[8:25] Speaker 1: will give my mom easier access to me, but I
[8:27] Speaker 1: can't stay at my friend's place forever. I'm holding on
[8:30] Speaker 1: for now. I don't cry every hour, but I'm still
[8:33] Speaker 1: sad and upset, and it just feels like it isn't
[8:36] Speaker 1: my life. This is a big joke or a bad dream,
[8:38] Speaker 1: and I want to wake up to my normal life.
[8:41] Speaker 1: I also need to really start planning my future and
[8:43] Speaker 1: start applying for jobs in other cities, or maybe check
[8:45] Speaker 1: the possibilities abroad. More seriously, I might take two or
[8:48] Speaker 1: three days off work to really get my thoughts together
[8:51] Speaker 1: and do some research. I'm terrified, to be honest, I
[8:53] Speaker 1: feel frozen, but I know I need to start moving.
[8:57] Speaker 1: Would I be the jerk if I refuse to wear contacts.
[9:00] Speaker 1: I'm nineteen female and my cousin, who's twenty three female,
[9:03] Speaker 1: is getting married in a couple of weeks. I'm my
[9:05] Speaker 1: cousin's maid of honor in her wedding, and we've grown
[9:07] Speaker 1: up together and have been through so much together. She's
[9:10] Speaker 1: like a big sister that I never had. When I
[9:12] Speaker 1: was in third grade, I started wearing glasses because I
[9:15] Speaker 1: couldn't see far, and she was the first person to
[9:17] Speaker 1: tell me that I looked beautiful in them because I
[9:19] Speaker 1: was insecure about how I looked in them, and that
[9:22] Speaker 1: now we could match because she also wore glasses. Well,
[9:25] Speaker 1: fast forward to today. I went to see my cousin
[9:27] Speaker 1: and her soon to be wife to talk about last
[9:29] Speaker 1: minute preparation of the wedding. When we started talking about
[9:33] Speaker 1: pictures of the wedding, and this is where Jordan, my
[9:35] Speaker 1: cousin's fiance, told me that I should take off my
[9:38] Speaker 1: glasses for the wedding and wear contacts instead because she
[9:41] Speaker 1: doesn't want them to ruin her wedding photos and that
[9:43] Speaker 1: I would look like an outcast and draw all of
[9:45] Speaker 1: the attention to me since I would be the only
[9:47] Speaker 1: one wearing glasses. To say that I was shocked was
[9:49] Speaker 1: an understatement. I've always wore my glasses and I never
[9:52] Speaker 1: take them off. I personally don't want to use contacts
[9:55] Speaker 1: because it's so much work and I'm a forgetful person,
[9:58] Speaker 1: so I might end up sleeping with them or something
[10:00] Speaker 1: like that. I told Jordan that I wouldn't be comfortable
[10:03] Speaker 1: with it, and that contacts cost money since I have
[10:05] Speaker 1: to get them for my prescription, which would take a while,
[10:08] Speaker 1: and that i'd be more comfortable wearing my glasses. She
[10:11] Speaker 1: told me, I'm being unreasonable and that my cousin is
[10:13] Speaker 1: wearing contacts for the wedding, so I should be a
[10:16] Speaker 1: good cousin and not ruining the wedding pictures. If not,
[10:19] Speaker 1: she will tell my cousin to remove me from the
[10:20] Speaker 1: wedding and I can just attend as a guest. My
[10:23] Speaker 1: heart kind of broke when she said that to me.
[10:25] Speaker 1: I know my cousin wouldn't care if I wore my glasses,
[10:28] Speaker 1: so I'm here asking strangers for advice. Would I be
[10:31] Speaker 1: the jerk if I don't wear contacts for my cousin's wedding?
[10:33] Speaker 1: And should I tell my cousin about this conversation with Jordan.
[10:36] Speaker 1: By the way, my cousin wasn't in the room with
[10:38] Speaker 1: this conversation took place. She had gone to get us
[10:41] Speaker 1: some food. Please help me out, and thank you not
[10:45] Speaker 1: the jerk. There's no time to get contacts and get
[10:47] Speaker 1: used to them. Even if you agreed, and don't take
[10:50] Speaker 1: the glasses off for the photos, you are who you
[10:52] Speaker 1: look like with glasses. They're an assistive device. Talk to
[10:56] Speaker 1: your cousin about this, OPI I understand that completely. I
[11:00] Speaker 1: forgot to mention. I did say I could take them
[11:02] Speaker 1: off for the pictures, but she said, I need to
[11:04] Speaker 1: buy contacts or it won't be natural. Not the jerk.
[11:08] Speaker 1: Don't get contacts for the wedding. That would be crazy.
[11:11] Speaker 1: Tell your cousin what was said. Cousin needs to know
[11:13] Speaker 1: Jordan's character, which is highly superficial. Prepare to be a
[11:16] Speaker 1: guest if necessary. If cousin gives in to Jordan, something
[11:20] Speaker 1: is wrong with the dynamics of the relationship. Update. So
[11:24] Speaker 1: on Saturday, my cousin called me saying she wanted to
[11:26] Speaker 1: talk to me about something. I figured that would be
[11:29] Speaker 1: a good time to tell her everything that went down
[11:30] Speaker 1: with Jordan. So we met at a park next to
[11:33] Speaker 1: our grandparents' house, and when I got there, she was
[11:35] Speaker 1: already waiting for me, but the vibe and energy seemed off.
[11:38] Speaker 1: It was tens I sat down in front of her
[11:41] Speaker 1: and no one said a word for like thirty seconds,
[11:43] Speaker 1: but it felt like forever. Then my cousin finally spoke,
[11:46] Speaker 1: with tears running down her face, asking me why I
[11:48] Speaker 1: wanted to drop out of the wedding and no longer
[11:50] Speaker 1: be her maid of honor. I was completely taken back
[11:53] Speaker 1: by what she just told me. I never once said
[11:55] Speaker 1: I would drop out of the wedding, nor say I
[11:57] Speaker 1: no longer wanted to be her maid of honor. As
[11:59] Speaker 1: I was prosper, she kept asking me whether I loved
[12:02] Speaker 1: her or not? What did she do? Why do I
[12:04] Speaker 1: not want to be in the wedding? Why did I
[12:06] Speaker 1: miss all of the wedding events her and Jordan planned?
[12:08] Speaker 1: Do I no longer value the relationship we've had and
[12:11] Speaker 1: the stuff that we went through? After five minutes of
[12:13] Speaker 1: calming her down, I explained that I never once said
[12:16] Speaker 1: I'm dropping out of her wedding, and that I do
[12:18] Speaker 1: love her and value everything we've been through. I started
[12:21] Speaker 1: crying because why would she think that after everything we'd
[12:23] Speaker 1: been through? And she told me that Jordan was the
[12:26] Speaker 1: one who told her I said I no longer wanted
[12:27] Speaker 1: to be in the wedding, and that I had said
[12:29] Speaker 1: I was busy for all of the events they had.
[12:32] Speaker 1: I looked at her, confused, because what events was she
[12:34] Speaker 1: talking about. My cousin saw my face and started to
[12:37] Speaker 1: realize I didn't know what she was talking about, and
[12:39] Speaker 1: she started talking about a barbecue and a weekend trip
[12:42] Speaker 1: to Arizona. The whole wedding party went last month. I
[12:45] Speaker 1: told my cousin I didn't know anything about this and
[12:47] Speaker 1: I was never invited to it. I thought Jordan invited you.
[12:51] Speaker 1: I never once got an invite or a message about
[12:53] Speaker 1: any of this. I proceed to show my cousin my
[12:56] Speaker 1: messages with Jordan and the group chat of the wedding party,
[12:59] Speaker 1: and nothing was there about the trip or dropping out
[13:01] Speaker 1: of the wedding. My cousin was shocked and started asking
[13:04] Speaker 1: more questions, like, you didn't tell Jordan you wanted out
[13:06] Speaker 1: of the wedding. When was the last time you talked
[13:08] Speaker 1: to her? Why didn't you get invited? I explained to
[13:11] Speaker 1: my cousin the last time I had spoken with Jordan
[13:14] Speaker 1: was when she told me about the contacts. I explained
[13:16] Speaker 1: to her about how Jordan said, if I don't get contexts,
[13:19] Speaker 1: she'll tell her to kick me out of the wedding.
[13:21] Speaker 1: I even showed my cousin the post, and she was livid.
[13:24] Speaker 1: She started going on and on about how Jordan would
[13:26] Speaker 1: not stop bothering her about getting contacts for the wedding,
[13:29] Speaker 1: and when my cousin would ask her why, Jordan would
[13:31] Speaker 1: say it won't match the esthetic of the wedding and
[13:34] Speaker 1: it'll throw everything off. So finally, after weeks, she gave
[13:38] Speaker 1: in and got the contacts. My cousin looked at me
[13:40] Speaker 1: and said, I could care less if you wear contacts.
[13:43] Speaker 1: It's a part of who you are. I'm not going
[13:45] Speaker 1: to stand for this. So after talking for about an hour,
[13:49] Speaker 1: she left and I just sat there shocked. After everything
[13:51] Speaker 1: was said and done. Later that day, around twelve am,
[13:55] Speaker 1: I received a call from Jordan. At first, I was
[13:57] Speaker 1: confused because she doesn't call me, but I picked up,
[14:00] Speaker 1: thinking something happened, but no, it was her crying and
[14:03] Speaker 1: screaming at me because I'm ruining her wedding and I'm
[14:06] Speaker 1: being a selfish little jerk. After a minute of that,
[14:09] Speaker 1: I just hung up. Then five minutes later got a
[14:11] Speaker 1: text for my cousin to go over to their house now.
[14:14] Speaker 1: Once I got to the house, it was a mess.
[14:16] Speaker 1: Stuff thrown on the floor, painting, broken dog toys all
[14:20] Speaker 1: over the floor, glass everywhere. It looked like a tornado
[14:23] Speaker 1: and an earthquake double teamed on the house. But anyways,
[14:26] Speaker 1: I walk into where my cousin and Jordan are sitting,
[14:28] Speaker 1: and Jordan is just crying and screaming once she saw me,
[14:32] Speaker 1: she started yelling at me and calling me every name
[14:34] Speaker 1: in the book. My cousin had to tell Jordan to
[14:36] Speaker 1: shut up, and once she did, everything came out in
[14:39] Speaker 1: the open. Basically, Jordan doesn't like me and hates that
[14:42] Speaker 1: me and my cousin are so close. She's been telling
[14:45] Speaker 1: lies to my cousin about me to get her to
[14:47] Speaker 1: hate me, as well as try to take my cousin
[14:49] Speaker 1: from the family so she can have her to herself. Now,
[14:52] Speaker 1: Jordan has been blowing up my phone and her phone,
[14:54] Speaker 1: asking for forgiveness and to give her a second chance,
[14:57] Speaker 1: and wants to make things right. But I told my
[14:59] Speaker 1: cousin if she wants to go through with the wedding,
[15:01] Speaker 1: it's up to her. I know they've been together for
[15:03] Speaker 1: four years now, and it can be hard leaving someone
[15:06] Speaker 1: you gave your heart to. I broke off from a
[15:09] Speaker 1: friend group that I've known for seven years over a
[15:11] Speaker 1: tab at Chili's. I twenty female have been friends with
[15:14] Speaker 1: these two girls, Charlie who's twenty and Alex who's nineteen.
[15:18] Speaker 1: We've been very close since middle school and we get
[15:20] Speaker 1: along and fangirl over the same Anime, K pop bands,
[15:23] Speaker 1: artists et cetera. One day, we decided to go to
[15:26] Speaker 1: our favorite spot, Chili's. We always separate the bill and
[15:29] Speaker 1: there are zero issues. However, Alex decides they want to
[15:32] Speaker 1: invite a male friend, John, who's eighteen, which is fine
[15:35] Speaker 1: with all of us. The food was good and per usual.
[15:38] Speaker 1: Then the server asks for split or one check. Then Charlie,
[15:42] Speaker 1: who usually says it's separate every time we go out
[15:44] Speaker 1: and eat, says all one, which I thought it was
[15:47] Speaker 1: just her feeling generous that day, but then they started
[15:50] Speaker 1: giving John these grins. Charlie said, John, you're paying for
[15:54] Speaker 1: us all. Just to be clear, John says what, with
[15:58] Speaker 1: a visible confusion on his face. Alex and Charlie giggle,
[16:01] Speaker 1: get up, and they leave. They signaled me to go
[16:04] Speaker 1: as well, but I was just as confused as John
[16:06] Speaker 1: was what just happened. Me and John sit there awkwardly.
[16:10] Speaker 1: The check comes to one hundred and twenty five dollars
[16:12] Speaker 1: and I tell the server to give us a moment
[16:14] Speaker 1: to provide payment. I only had enough for me thirty
[16:17] Speaker 1: dollars and John only has enough for him forty dollars.
[16:20] Speaker 1: Charlie texted in our group chat asking if I was
[16:23] Speaker 1: coming with them. I told them, what are they doing?
[16:26] Speaker 1: Then they went on some bs that John should want
[16:28] Speaker 1: to impress us and that it's a man's role to
[16:30] Speaker 1: treat us like princesses or something like that. I thought
[16:33] Speaker 1: they were joking, but they were dead serious, and upon
[16:36] Speaker 1: me going outside to physically confront them, they were serious
[16:39] Speaker 1: because they left me and John with no ride and
[16:41] Speaker 1: the tab. I asked my dad if he could spare
[16:44] Speaker 1: me sixty dollars and that he can just cut off
[16:46] Speaker 1: my allowance for two weeks. I explained the situation, but
[16:49] Speaker 1: he agreed with Alex and Charlie and said that this
[16:51] Speaker 1: is John's problem now and not mine. It was like
[16:54] Speaker 1: a scene out of a movie. I was in complete disbelief.
[16:57] Speaker 1: I explained the situation to the server, who was super
[17:00] Speaker 1: cool and said, if you can't produce the payment now,
[17:02] Speaker 1: I can just leave a number and they can charge
[17:04] Speaker 1: me tomorrow. Out of one last effort, I called my
[17:07] Speaker 1: uncle for the money and he immediately understood and sent
[17:10] Speaker 1: me the money and even said he would be there
[17:12] Speaker 1: to pick me in John up, I pay the tab.
[17:14] Speaker 1: I apologize heavily to John about the entire situation, but
[17:18] Speaker 1: he was actually really chill and super grateful for what
[17:20] Speaker 1: I was doing because he only had forty dollars from
[17:22] Speaker 1: his birthday money and decided to spend it with his friends.
[17:26] Speaker 1: I get a text from Alex in the group chat
[17:28] Speaker 1: asking if John paid for the tab. I said no,
[17:31] Speaker 1: I did, and they got mad at me. Then my
[17:34] Speaker 1: dad asked what happened. I tell him the truth that
[17:36] Speaker 1: his brother paid for the tab, and he got mad
[17:38] Speaker 1: at me. Do I leave in the twilight zone? Am
[17:41] Speaker 1: I crazy for not wanting to ruin a friend's life
[17:43] Speaker 1: over Chili's? Anyways? After Alex saying I'm just not going
[17:47] Speaker 1: to invite guys to our plans anymore, I left the
[17:49] Speaker 1: group chat and blocked Alex and Charlie. John also cut
[17:53] Speaker 1: ties with them, and we've started talking more and more
[17:55] Speaker 1: and we sometimes play Fortnite together. Anyways, moral of the story,
[17:59] Speaker 1: you think you know someone? Also, John and I didn't
[18:03] Speaker 1: even know each other before this happened. Yes, I'm twenty
[18:06] Speaker 1: and I still get a fifty dollars weekly allowance. I'm
[18:08] Speaker 1: actively looking for work. Some of you guys are antagonizing
[18:11] Speaker 1: my dad, but yet want to act like mine for
[18:14] Speaker 1: not working. People are asking why didn't just pay for
[18:17] Speaker 1: my own tab, give them my numbers, friends or addresses,
[18:19] Speaker 1: and call the police. YadA YadA. Is that what I
[18:22] Speaker 1: should have done one hundred percent? But I felt like
[18:24] Speaker 1: John was already visibly stressed about the situation, and I
[18:27] Speaker 1: didn't want to escalate it to potentially more stress. I
[18:30] Speaker 1: was thinking about John's well being above everything else, and
[18:33] Speaker 1: having someone else cover the rest of the money was
[18:35] Speaker 1: the easiest solution for me, probably not the right one,
[18:37] Speaker 1: but the easiest for me and John. I'm a mom
[18:41] Speaker 1: to girls and a boy who are around your age.
[18:43] Speaker 1: This is so wrong of your so called friends and
[18:46] Speaker 1: your dad. I would be so angry if this happened
[18:48] Speaker 1: to my son at this age. Everyone should pay for
[18:50] Speaker 1: their own way unless otherwise stated? Am I the jerk
[18:54] Speaker 1: for canceling my mother's play and visit after she billed me?
[18:58] Speaker 1: My mother, who sixty five, came to visit me thirty nine,
[19:01] Speaker 1: female her daughter after I called her to share the
[19:03] Speaker 1: news that I received some troubling news about my health.
[19:06] Speaker 1: I'm on the mend. The worst is behind me. She
[19:08] Speaker 1: lives approximately two hours away from me. During the visit,
[19:11] Speaker 1: she signaled she planned to charge me for parking fees
[19:14] Speaker 1: at the clinic she brought me to, among a couple
[19:16] Speaker 1: of other expenses that she incurred helping me throughout the day.
[19:19] Speaker 1: I was fine with that. She's not exactly swimming in
[19:22] Speaker 1: money after retiring, though, has some discretionary income, and I'm
[19:26] Speaker 1: a grown up. In fact, I would have taken care
[19:28] Speaker 1: of the parking fees and other expenses myself at the
[19:31] Speaker 1: time if I wasn't incapacitated. So totally fine and expected.
[19:35] Speaker 1: Where I stopped being fine was when she called me
[19:37] Speaker 1: after the visit asking for a lot more money than
[19:39] Speaker 1: I'd expected. After probing a bit, I discovered that she
[19:43] Speaker 1: had lumped in there an estimate of how much she
[19:45] Speaker 1: had spent on gas to come visit me, and not
[19:47] Speaker 1: just the pasta salad she bought for me at lunch,
[19:49] Speaker 1: which was totally fine, but also the pasta salad she
[19:52] Speaker 1: bought herself. I'm happy to treat her for lunch, and
[19:54] Speaker 1: I often do. I treated her for dinner that very night,
[19:57] Speaker 1: but I found it odd she would just go ahead
[19:59] Speaker 1: and add her lunch to the bill I hadn't offered,
[20:02] Speaker 1: and aren't I the sick one. It was only twenty
[20:04] Speaker 1: bucks altogether, but the reason I canceled her visit tomorrow
[20:07] Speaker 1: to come over and help some more. Was because I
[20:09] Speaker 1: couldn't believe she'd passed on her gas expenses to me
[20:12] Speaker 1: when she said she was coming to visit After learning
[20:14] Speaker 1: of my condition, she omitted the part of her plan
[20:17] Speaker 1: where she'd charged me for her gas to get here. Sure,
[20:19] Speaker 1: she complained about the cost of gas when she arrived,
[20:22] Speaker 1: but never did she share her plan to make me
[20:24] Speaker 1: cover it. She's never done anything like this before. It's
[20:27] Speaker 1: not the money, it's the principal, and I had no
[20:29] Speaker 1: intention of paying for her to come visit me tomorrow too.
[20:32] Speaker 1: I plan on sharing with her my feelings about all
[20:34] Speaker 1: of this once I've given some thought to how I'll
[20:36] Speaker 1: navigate it with her. I would feel so ashamed as
[20:39] Speaker 1: a parent if the rules were reversed. This whole thing
[20:41] Speaker 1: makes me question why I haven't billed her when I've
[20:43] Speaker 1: gone to visit her after falling ill. Of course, I
[20:46] Speaker 1: would never bring myself to actually do that. The thought
[20:49] Speaker 1: of it makes me feel sick. So am I the
[20:51] Speaker 1: jerk for canceling her visit? First off, you're not the
[20:55] Speaker 1: jerk for feeling upset about being billed for your mom's visit.
[20:58] Speaker 1: That's a curveball nobody wants, especially when you're already dealing
[21:01] Speaker 1: with health issues. Imagine being on a sinking ship and
[21:04] Speaker 1: someone throws you a life preserver, then asks you to
[21:06] Speaker 1: venmo them for it. Not cool. Your mom, bless her heart,
[21:10] Speaker 1: probably has her own set of financial worries and may
[21:12] Speaker 1: have thought, hey, my daughter's a grown up, she can
[21:15] Speaker 1: chip in. But expecting you to cover her gas and
[21:17] Speaker 1: lunch costs, especially without a heads up, is like inviting
[21:20] Speaker 1: you to dinner and then handing you the check for
[21:22] Speaker 1: the groceries. It's the surprise factor that stings more than
[21:25] Speaker 1: the actual cost. You did the right thing by canceling
[21:28] Speaker 1: her next visit. It's not about the twenty dollars pasta salad.
[21:31] Speaker 1: It's about setting boundaries and maintaining your self respect. You
[21:34] Speaker 1: deserve to recuperate without feeling like you need an accountant
[21:37] Speaker 1: to handle family relationships. When you do have that conversation
[21:40] Speaker 1: with her, approach it with empathy, but stand your ground.
[21:43] Speaker 1: You might say something like, Mom, I understand money can
[21:46] Speaker 1: be tight, but I was really taken aback when you
[21:48] Speaker 1: asked me to cover all of those expenses. It made
[21:50] Speaker 1: me feel like a client rather than your daughter, especially
[21:53] Speaker 1: during such a tough time for me. If she didn't
[21:55] Speaker 1: realize how it came across, this could be an eye
[21:58] Speaker 1: opener for her, and if she did well, it's a
[22:00] Speaker 1: good way to make it clear that this kind of
[22:02] Speaker 1: transactional approach doesn't fly in your relationship. In the end,
[22:05] Speaker 1: you're just questioning her actions, but also protecting your own
[22:08] Speaker 1: emotional well being, and in this scenario that's not just okay,
[22:12] Speaker 1: it's essential. Karen Squatter moves into my house while I'm gone.
[22:17] Speaker 1: Now she's in jail. Santa Monica, California. I'm the owner
[22:21] Speaker 1: of a two story house. I'd gone to Hawaii last
[22:24] Speaker 1: week for a one week vacation with my wife. No
[22:26] Speaker 1: one was at home and it wasn't feasible for us
[22:28] Speaker 1: to take two dogs with us. So I gave my
[22:31] Speaker 1: house keys to a good friend of mine and I
[22:33] Speaker 1: asked him to take care of my two dogs. This
[22:35] Speaker 1: would involve feeding them, changing water, and taking them out
[22:38] Speaker 1: to walk one hour a day. So his girlfriend was
[22:41] Speaker 1: in town and she had no place to stay. He
[22:44] Speaker 1: lives in a one bedroom condo with two other roommates,
[22:47] Speaker 1: so he messaged me and asked if I would allow
[22:49] Speaker 1: his girlfriend to stay at my home for just one night.
[22:53] Speaker 1: I agreed, as it was just a matter of one night. Now,
[22:56] Speaker 1: yesterday I came back and found out his girlfriend had
[22:59] Speaker 1: made dwelling and my upper floor of my house. She's
[23:02] Speaker 1: been staying here for four days. I asked her to
[23:05] Speaker 1: leave immediately, but she and my friend are insisting to
[23:08] Speaker 1: let her stay one more week because she's in search
[23:10] Speaker 1: of a job in la. I called the police. They
[23:13] Speaker 1: came and said this would be a sibil matter and
[23:16] Speaker 1: I have to go through the eviction process. So I'm
[23:18] Speaker 1: here with an unwanted stranger in my upper floor, a
[23:21] Speaker 1: jerk friend who broke promises, and my upset wife. What
[23:25] Speaker 1: to do? Guys, Can I change locks and throw her
[23:27] Speaker 1: stuff out when she's away cut the electricity to the
[23:30] Speaker 1: upper floor update. So, after reading all of the advice
[23:34] Speaker 1: here and carefully discussing it with my cousin, we made
[23:37] Speaker 1: a nasty plan. Yesterday night that squatter girl went outside
[23:41] Speaker 1: to grab some dinner with her boyfriend, Me and my
[23:43] Speaker 1: cousin carefully packed all of her stuff into three bags
[23:46] Speaker 1: and we left it on the front porch and locked
[23:48] Speaker 1: ourselves in the house. We also looked over her stuff
[23:51] Speaker 1: from the window to make sure that no one stole it.
[23:54] Speaker 1: Our weight was over. After two hours, when she returned,
[23:57] Speaker 1: she figured it out and started pounding on our door,
[24:00] Speaker 1: yelling loudly to open it. You know, typical squatter drama.
[24:04] Speaker 1: We told her to buzz off and that we wouldn't
[24:05] Speaker 1: open the door. So finally, after thirty minutes of constant drama,
[24:10] Speaker 1: she dared to call the cops. I was nervous how
[24:12] Speaker 1: it would turn out. The cops arrived, and fortunately these
[24:16] Speaker 1: were different ones than the previous night. First they listened
[24:19] Speaker 1: to her side, then they came to me. I explicitly
[24:22] Speaker 1: told them that I was the sole owner of this
[24:24] Speaker 1: house and I never allowed her to stay more than
[24:26] Speaker 1: one night. She was not only trespassing, but also living
[24:29] Speaker 1: in my house illegally without my permission. She kept saying,
[24:33] Speaker 1: I'd given her permission to stay there indefinitely, and now
[24:35] Speaker 1: I'm kicking her out. Officer asked if she had any
[24:38] Speaker 1: proof of that. She claimed she had some text message
[24:41] Speaker 1: which she had accidentally deleted. Now to the best part,
[24:45] Speaker 1: Officer then asked her for an ID. She gave it,
[24:48] Speaker 1: Officer verified it over the radio. Suddenly, they told him
[24:52] Speaker 1: that this jerk had a failure to appear warrant for
[24:54] Speaker 1: months old shoplifting cases. Stupid lady was arrested immediately. All
[24:59] Speaker 1: her stuff was sent to a friend's house. Officers said
[25:02] Speaker 1: that I don't need to worry and they'll take care
[25:04] Speaker 1: of her. I do not require any further action. So
[25:07] Speaker 1: finally I'm relieved from that squatter and she's behind bars.
[25:11] Speaker 1: Pure justice. I always thought evictions were used to handle
[25:15] Speaker 1: unwanted guests that were living somewhere for two weeks to
[25:18] Speaker 1: thirty days plus. Too bad the cops didn't stick her
[25:21] Speaker 1: with a trespassing charge as well as the old shoplifting charge.
[25:24] Speaker 1: How often do cops call something a civil matter just
[25:27] Speaker 1: because they don't want to do paperwork? I swear that's
[25:30] Speaker 1: what every single one of these civil matter situations feels like.
[25:34] Speaker 1: The One thing I've learned about these tendency laws and
[25:36] Speaker 1: squatters is just take their crap and throw it outside,
[25:40] Speaker 1: call a locksmith and put in security cameras. They want
[25:43] Speaker 1: to call the police, Okay, go for it. She doesn't
[25:45] Speaker 1: live here, she has no proof of tendency, and she's
[25:48] Speaker 1: currently trespassing. Please get her off my property now done.
[25:52] Speaker 1: If you call when they are in. They will always
[25:55] Speaker 1: take the con artist's side, which they know, which is
[25:57] Speaker 1: why they do it. Also, forget that friend like he
[26:00] Speaker 1: didn't know what his girlfriend was going to do. Forget
[26:03] Speaker 1: them both. Am I wrong for expecting people to pay
[26:07] Speaker 1: my kid? My kid, who's nine, has recently gotten into baking.
[26:11] Speaker 1: She's really passionate about it, and it has sparked most
[26:13] Speaker 1: of our family members to stimulate said passion by requesting
[26:17] Speaker 1: her to bake small items they happen to be craving
[26:19] Speaker 1: right as they're coming over or have invited us over.
[26:22] Speaker 1: They're always very small things like oh, I'd sure love
[26:25] Speaker 1: some brownies or similar. But since people are asking and
[26:29] Speaker 1: complimenting her genuinely makes her heart smile, I only support it,
[26:32] Speaker 1: and I don't mind paying for the ingredients. Now, one
[26:35] Speaker 1: of my family members is hosting a gathering and asked
[26:38] Speaker 1: my daughter to bake seventy five cupcakes. They said they
[26:41] Speaker 1: would take her shopping for the ingredients. She asked me
[26:43] Speaker 1: if she could, and I said sure. I supervised the
[26:46] Speaker 1: oven related steps and have to be present afterwards. I
[26:50] Speaker 1: contacted said family member to get some specific says to
[26:53] Speaker 1: allergies and other nonsense and brought up the fact that
[26:55] Speaker 1: she was so excited to have her very first paining customer.
[26:59] Speaker 1: Said family member was apparently appalled at the expectation of
[27:02] Speaker 1: paying my kid for hours of labor and stated that
[27:05] Speaker 1: since she is a kid and doesn't have a genuine
[27:07] Speaker 1: business yet, she shouldn't expect payment because taxes. I replied
[27:12] Speaker 1: that if she feels that strong, she should have ordered
[27:14] Speaker 1: from a genuine business, because there's no way in any
[27:17] Speaker 1: universe I'm going to let someone exploit her like that.
[27:20] Speaker 1: She got mad and hung up on me. Now some
[27:23] Speaker 1: additional infoll I didn't expect a full hourly wage, just
[27:27] Speaker 1: something extra to thank her for her hard work she's
[27:29] Speaker 1: been putting every since she gets an allowance or earns
[27:32] Speaker 1: towards more baking supplies. I expect she would have done
[27:35] Speaker 1: the same with this money, but that's entirely up to her.
[27:38] Speaker 1: If said family members decide not to pay, I'm still
[27:41] Speaker 1: going to let her make the big order, pay her
[27:43] Speaker 1: in full, and take the food down to a local
[27:45] Speaker 1: food bank, so she still gets the money and the experience.
[27:49] Speaker 1: As fellow parents, how would you have approached the situation.
[27:52] Speaker 1: I feel like I potentially robbed her of an experience
[27:54] Speaker 1: she would have enjoyed out of personal principle. Edit, this
[27:58] Speaker 1: is not a close family member. She's the kind of
[28:00] Speaker 1: relative you only see at funerals or weddings. All the
[28:03] Speaker 1: money that my kids earn goes to them one hundred percent. Yes,
[28:06] Speaker 1: I do pay them for the chores they do. No,
[28:09] Speaker 1: I'm not trying to turn my daughter's hobby into a business.
[28:11] Speaker 1: I'm only supporting and teaching her wherever she takes it.
[28:15] Speaker 1: I do not feel any kind of strong emotion towards
[28:17] Speaker 1: said relative. I don't dislike her at all, and we
[28:20] Speaker 1: aren't American. Does your kid enjoy being with this relative?
[28:24] Speaker 1: Sounds like it could have been just a fun afternoon
[28:26] Speaker 1: activity with someone special while you're turning this person into
[28:29] Speaker 1: a paying customer. I'd be insulted if I offered to
[28:32] Speaker 1: my niece or granddaughter, whoever, that I bring them shopping
[28:35] Speaker 1: for ingredients so we could do cupcakes together, and then
[28:38] Speaker 1: I somehow turn into a paying customer. As for the
[28:41] Speaker 1: exact count of seventy five, anytime I'm cooking with kids,
[28:44] Speaker 1: I do so with the full understanding that I'll end
[28:46] Speaker 1: up doing ninety two percent of the work anyway. Op
[28:50] Speaker 1: she sees this person twice a year and has no
[28:52] Speaker 1: relationship with her. Two, she promoted herself to customer as
[28:56] Speaker 1: according to my daughter, she said, how would you like
[28:59] Speaker 1: your very first customer? Three? She would be baking them
[29:02] Speaker 1: from home and I would be driving them to the event.
[29:05] Speaker 1: The relative would not be involved, even if she were
[29:08] Speaker 1: to be, the only thing she needs help with is
[29:10] Speaker 1: putting things in or taking them out of the oven,
[29:12] Speaker 1: So she does ninety nine percent of the work herself.
[29:15] Speaker 1: Did your kid expect to get paid? Yes, she did.
[29:19] Speaker 1: The relative said, according to my daughter, how would you
[29:21] Speaker 1: like your very first customer? My daughter isn't an idiot.
[29:25] Speaker 1: Customers pay for services and goods. When she asked me
[29:28] Speaker 1: if she was allowed to do that, she even offered
[29:30] Speaker 1: to share the profits with me for supervising her, which
[29:32] Speaker 1: I obviously declined. Sounds like you may have made a
[29:35] Speaker 1: fun and pleasant experience a stressful one. As of now,
[29:39] Speaker 1: she's still unaware of this. I'm going to resolve this.
[29:42] Speaker 1: Either she bakes for the relative and gets paid by her,
[29:45] Speaker 1: or she bakes for the food bank and gets paid
[29:47] Speaker 1: by me. Update. I have set my daughter down and
[29:51] Speaker 1: explained to her that the relative did not intend on
[29:53] Speaker 1: paying her, that she was welcome to do the work
[29:55] Speaker 1: for free if she's so desired, but that she also
[29:58] Speaker 1: was allowed to decline her request. We proceeded to have
[30:01] Speaker 1: an entire discussion about the differences about doing someone a
[30:04] Speaker 1: favor like a pan of brownies, and labor like catering
[30:07] Speaker 1: a event. I emphasized it was her decision and she
[30:10] Speaker 1: would have my help and support whichever way she went.
[30:13] Speaker 1: She ended up asking if it were possible for her
[30:15] Speaker 1: to attend the event instead of receiving payment, so she
[30:18] Speaker 1: could see the people eat her cupcakes and brag about
[30:20] Speaker 1: making them, which the relative declined because it was a
[30:23] Speaker 1: child free event and she could not make exceptions. We
[30:26] Speaker 1: both found this fair enough, and she requested a set
[30:29] Speaker 1: of baking pans and sizes she doesn't have yet as payment,
[30:32] Speaker 1: which the relative also declined because why should she give
[30:36] Speaker 1: her gifts while it was the relative's time to be celebrated.
[30:39] Speaker 1: She went on to say that my kid was ruining
[30:41] Speaker 1: the party by refusing to do dessert because she counted
[30:44] Speaker 1: on it. My daughter was starting to feel guilty, and
[30:46] Speaker 1: I stepped in gave her a list of local bakeries
[30:49] Speaker 1: and at home bakers. She could contact and wished her
[30:52] Speaker 1: a fantastic day, reassured my kid, and we went to
[30:55] Speaker 1: go shopping for the baking tins ourselves. About two hours later,
[30:59] Speaker 1: the relative, undoubtedly having contacted bakers and bakeries, called and
[31:03] Speaker 1: offered my daughter a gift card for a local shop
[31:05] Speaker 1: that sells all kinds of cooking and baking supplies. She
[31:08] Speaker 1: happily accepted, and we thought that was that the relative
[31:12] Speaker 1: really stepped her game up in making up for the nonsense,
[31:15] Speaker 1: and she arranged for my kid and myself to supervise
[31:18] Speaker 1: to be allowed in the venue's kitchen and make the
[31:20] Speaker 1: cupcakes there, as the venue owners who also cater the venue,
[31:24] Speaker 1: thought this would be a good idea. I've ordered her
[31:27] Speaker 1: her very first apron and she is beyond excited to
[31:29] Speaker 1: experience a commercial kitchen, and watching her heart smile makes
[31:33] Speaker 1: my mom heart happy. Do this next. Tap here on
