[0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome to r slash am I the jerk, where TikTok
[0:02] Speaker 1: is ruining OP's marriage. Am I the jerk for telling
[0:05] Speaker 1: my wife she's not worthy of what she's asking for?
[0:09] Speaker 1: My wife and I have been together for five years
[0:11] Speaker 1: and she's currently pregnant with our baby. A few days ago,
[0:14] Speaker 1: she sent me a TikTok video of a woman discussing
[0:16] Speaker 1: the concept of a push present on one of those podcasts.
[0:20] Speaker 1: At first, I didn't even know what it meant, but
[0:23] Speaker 1: when I looked it up, I found out it's basically
[0:25] Speaker 1: a thank you gift to the woman who has your baby.
[0:28] Speaker 1: This concept seemed very strange to me. I understand the
[0:31] Speaker 1: desire for appreciation from your husband for what women go
[0:34] Speaker 1: through during pregnancy and childbirth, but the materialistic aspect gave
[0:37] Speaker 1: me a pause. The woman in the TikTok went on
[0:40] Speaker 1: and on about how it's a body for a body,
[0:43] Speaker 1: suggesting that the man should get a permanent tattoo on
[0:45] Speaker 1: his lower body, as well as give her a house
[0:48] Speaker 1: and a car as exclusive gifts. I found those expectations
[0:52] Speaker 1: to be quite entitled, honestly a bit vindictive and envious,
[0:55] Speaker 1: especially the tattoo part, and very over the top for
[0:58] Speaker 1: my taste. The decision to bring a child into the
[1:00] Speaker 1: world is a mutual one between partners. My wife, in
[1:04] Speaker 1: our case, is not forced to be a mom or
[1:06] Speaker 1: to be pregnant. She wants to be a parent too.
[1:09] Speaker 1: I simply replied to the TikTok with laughing emojis and
[1:11] Speaker 1: moved on, thinking it would be the end of it
[1:13] Speaker 1: and that she meant to send the video as satire. Like, oh,
[1:16] Speaker 1: look how ridiculous this is. She was in the other
[1:19] Speaker 1: room when I reacted to the video and she came
[1:21] Speaker 1: to me, telling me that while she doesn't expect a
[1:24] Speaker 1: tattoo or an exclusive house, She does want me to
[1:26] Speaker 1: dip into my personal savings to get her a car
[1:29] Speaker 1: just for her. I looked at her almost shocked and
[1:32] Speaker 1: began laughing. I thought my wife and I shared similar
[1:35] Speaker 1: views on how ridiculous people can be and I realized
[1:38] Speaker 1: I was wrong. I thought she was joking and I
[1:40] Speaker 1: pressed her to see if she was serious. She became
[1:42] Speaker 1: very annoyed and I thought she was joking, possibly imitating
[1:46] Speaker 1: the entitled woman in the video and flatly stated that
[1:49] Speaker 1: she expects a real push present. I told her that
[1:52] Speaker 1: her gift is the gift of parenthood and the realization
[1:55] Speaker 1: of a healthy baby. Materially speaking, I'll probably gift her
[1:58] Speaker 1: a Mother's Day card, a day out, or some jewelry
[2:01] Speaker 1: she wants, under $ 700, but nothing more. I mentioned that
[2:05] Speaker 1: if she really wants an extra car, it will be
[2:07] Speaker 1: our car, not just hers. She insisted it wasn't enough
[2:11] Speaker 1: for what she would go through. She kept pushing and
[2:14] Speaker 1: asked if I thought she wasn't worthy enough. I told
[2:16] Speaker 1: her she is worthy as my partner and the mother
[2:18] Speaker 1: of my child but she needs to be realistic and
[2:21] Speaker 1: understand that neither of us is individually deserving of what
[2:24] Speaker 1: she's asking for. I said she has to manage her
[2:26] Speaker 1: expectations because I don't see why she feels entitled to that.
[2:30] Speaker 1: It came out wrong, but I didn't mean to dismiss
[2:32] Speaker 1: her as a person. She isn't speaking to me now
[2:34] Speaker 1: and is crying about the argument. I overheard her criticizing
[2:38] Speaker 1: me to her sister on the phone, but under no
[2:40] Speaker 1: circumstances would I ever consider gifting her a car. I
[2:43] Speaker 1: feel bad that she's hurting right now, but I don't
[2:45] Speaker 1: feel bad for giving her a reality check. My push
[2:49] Speaker 1: present was sushi right after the little one was born.
[2:52] Speaker 1: I really wanted sushi the whole time I was pregnant
[2:54] Speaker 1: and couldn't have any. Not the jerk. I'm pregnant and
[2:58] Speaker 1: my husband is going to gift me my birthstone jewelry
[3:00] Speaker 1: and I'm gifting him a watch with an engraving. Those
[3:03] Speaker 1: TikTok videos absolutely wreck relationships. My sister-in-law at one point
[3:08] Speaker 1: almost left my brother-in-law because he wouldn't make her a
[3:10] Speaker 1: boo basket for Halloween. I don't know why women follow
[3:14] Speaker 1: relationship advice from TikTok. Social media is destroying relationships at
[3:19] Speaker 1: an alarming rate. Am I the jerk for not sharing
[3:22] Speaker 1: the surprises in the dingy house that was my share
[3:25] Speaker 1: of inheritance? I, 37 female, have two siblings, 43-year-old brother
[3:30] Speaker 1: and 29-year-old sister. For the sake of this post, I
[3:33] Speaker 1: will call them Mason and Brittany. Our father passed when
[3:36] Speaker 1: we were young due to an undiagnosed heart problem. His
[3:39] Speaker 1: parents had gifted them an old family homestead on a
[3:41] Speaker 1: lot of land at their wedding helped a lot to
[3:44] Speaker 1: keep our family above water before they passed. Our mother
[3:47] Speaker 1: finally found her feet after about 5 years of deep
[3:49] Speaker 1: depression and did well for our family but she was
[3:52] Speaker 1: also very frugal. We had good clothing but no fancy vacations.
[3:56] Speaker 1: Our mother ignored signs of bad health for years even
[3:59] Speaker 1: when we tried to get her to see someone for it.
[4:02] Speaker 1: She passed recently due to late stage cancer leaving us
[4:04] Speaker 1: with a lot. My siblings each got more than $ 150, 000
[4:08] Speaker 1: in money, sentimental but expensive items, and furniture. I did
[4:12] Speaker 1: not get the money. I received the house, the land,
[4:15] Speaker 1: and some items. The house and land, which had been
[4:18] Speaker 1: sold off bit by bit over the years due to
[4:20] Speaker 1: mom's declining health and inability to properly tend to it,
[4:23] Speaker 1: is worth far below the $ 150, 000 my siblings received. I
[4:28] Speaker 1: had moved in with my mother near her end and
[4:30] Speaker 1: it really was only supposed to be temporary as I
[4:32] Speaker 1: believed the house would be sold after her passing and
[4:34] Speaker 1: the money split three ways. I already had a plan
[4:37] Speaker 1: to move in with a friend and her family after
[4:39] Speaker 1: mom's passing to make that process go more smoothly. Most
[4:42] Speaker 1: of my stuff has been sitting in storage for almost
[4:44] Speaker 1: a year. As the only one who worked from home,
[4:47] Speaker 1: I could watch the home health workers and nurses to
[4:49] Speaker 1: make sure that they were being kind, doing their jobs
[4:52] Speaker 1: and not stealing. Mostly it was to ensure they treated
[4:55] Speaker 1: my mother with respect and kindness and but my brother
[4:57] Speaker 1: did worry about someone walking off with her wedding ring
[5:00] Speaker 1: since she was so attached to it. We all agreed
[5:02] Speaker 1: for it to be placed in with her ashes, so
[5:04] Speaker 1: I made a little setup and took care of her.
[5:07] Speaker 1: My siblings came by frequently, three to six times a week,
[5:10] Speaker 1: each of them. Mason had two kids, and Brittany only
[5:12] Speaker 1: has one, but they visited as well, though not as
[5:15] Speaker 1: much near the end because it was hard for them.
[5:18] Speaker 1: In the weeks leading up to her passing, my mother
[5:20] Speaker 1: had me pack up what items went to whom in
[5:22] Speaker 1: large boxes and set them off to the side, My
[5:25] Speaker 1: siblings hated doing this but understood that it was what
[5:27] Speaker 1: she wanted. The will was read, they checked their boxes
[5:30] Speaker 1: to make sure my mom didn't miss anything when telling
[5:32] Speaker 1: me to pack and they left me to my house.
[5:35] Speaker 1: Weeks passed and I finally felt like I could start
[5:37] Speaker 1: doing things to the house. Now, I did say the
[5:40] Speaker 1: house was dingy. It's not worth $ 150, 000 but the housing
[5:43] Speaker 1: market is crazy so I thought it was a bit
[5:45] Speaker 1: of luck. It needs repairs, the roof, the chimney, the
[5:49] Speaker 1: water heater, pipes, and the doors and windows for heating purposes.
[5:53] Speaker 1: Everything inside is darkly painted or made with wood that
[5:56] Speaker 1: just sucks out all of the light. I immediately had
[5:58] Speaker 1: people check the roof, chimney, and water heater. My siblings
[6:01] Speaker 1: offered to lend me some money but I declined as
[6:04] Speaker 1: I had been saving for a while to buy an
[6:05] Speaker 1: apartment or something small since it's just me. I could
[6:08] Speaker 1: also rent rooms to local college students to get some
[6:10] Speaker 1: of that money back. I picked out paints for different
[6:13] Speaker 1: rooms but decided to leave the wood flooring. As I
[6:16] Speaker 1: started going through everything in the house, which had specifically
[6:19] Speaker 1: been left to me as stated in the will, I
[6:21] Speaker 1: began finding things. There was money in books, and there
[6:24] Speaker 1: are so many books. Money was taped under beds, folded
[6:27] Speaker 1: into the fancy sheets, and hidden in the teapot and
[6:29] Speaker 1: cups that had been passed down in the family, which
[6:32] Speaker 1: we had never been allowed to touch for fear that
[6:33] Speaker 1: we might break them. I found jewelry in different boxes,
[6:37] Speaker 1: hidden in the attic, the vents, and in sock drawers.
[6:40] Speaker 1: Some of it was so gaudy and had to be costumed,
[6:42] Speaker 1: but I put it all together, thank goodness I did,
[6:45] Speaker 1: and took it to be appraised. The jewelry is worth
[6:47] Speaker 1: nearly half of what my siblings got. Even the would-be
[6:50] Speaker 1: costume jewelry is worth something. Even now, I'm still finding things.
[6:55] Speaker 1: I find antique items, fancy watches, untouched clothing, and bags
[6:59] Speaker 1: with price tags still on them, belts and shoes still
[7:01] Speaker 1: in their boxes. All of this was tucked away, apparently
[7:04] Speaker 1: hidden and never talked about. Some of the clothing still
[7:07] Speaker 1: had receipts, and since neither my sister nor I can
[7:10] Speaker 1: wear them, I took them back to see if I
[7:11] Speaker 1: could get the refunds or start selling them online, since again,
[7:15] Speaker 1: everything left in the house was specifically for me. I
[7:18] Speaker 1: took the cash and used it to help pay for
[7:20] Speaker 1: the immediate repairs and and it almost covered the whole thing.
[7:22] Speaker 1: I looked through the jewelry and kept what I liked,
[7:25] Speaker 1: which was very little as I'm not into that sort
[7:27] Speaker 1: of thing, and put aside some for my sister and
[7:30] Speaker 1: my brother's daughter. I liquidated the rest and put that
[7:32] Speaker 1: into savings. I also set aside some of the bags, belts,
[7:36] Speaker 1: and watches for my siblings and their families. We can't
[7:39] Speaker 1: fit the clothes, but those things are easier to swap around.
[7:42] Speaker 1: I invited everyone over and gifted them the items, telling
[7:45] Speaker 1: them I had found them while cleaning everything out and
[7:47] Speaker 1: thought they might like to have them. Everyone was happy
[7:50] Speaker 1: to get them and there wasn't much bickering among the kids.
[7:53] Speaker 1: They asked what else I found and I explained the
[7:55] Speaker 1: jewelry I kept and the clothing I was selling off.
[7:58] Speaker 1: My brother got a weird look on his face and
[8:00] Speaker 1: asked if I had found any money. I told him
[8:02] Speaker 1: I had but tried to downplay it as mostly change
[8:05] Speaker 1: and loose bills. He asked to see the money so
[8:08] Speaker 1: I grabbed the giant water refill container I had started
[8:10] Speaker 1: storing all the coins in. He told me that it
[8:12] Speaker 1: was a lot of coins and asked if I was
[8:14] Speaker 1: going to use it for the laundromat since I left
[8:16] Speaker 1: them all loose. I rolled my eyes because I have
[8:19] Speaker 1: a washer and dryer set. I told him there was
[8:22] Speaker 1: no point in cashing them in until I cleaned the
[8:24] Speaker 1: whole house. He told me to let them know so
[8:26] Speaker 1: we could all split that and the money I got
[8:28] Speaker 1: from selling the clothing. When I asked why, he said,
[8:31] Speaker 1: So we can split it. I asked him why I
[8:34] Speaker 1: would split it when they all had large cash inheritances,
[8:37] Speaker 1: sentimental and expensive things and other stuff. I literally got
[8:41] Speaker 1: the house, the problems, the cleanup, and the nice things
[8:44] Speaker 1: I did find that I thought they might like, I
[8:46] Speaker 1: handed over without even being asked to. He told me
[8:49] Speaker 1: I didn't have to be a greedy jerk about it
[8:51] Speaker 1: and to never mind. My sister gave me the side
[8:54] Speaker 1: eye but didn't say anything. I feel guilty for misleading
[8:57] Speaker 1: them about how much I actually found even though it
[8:59] Speaker 1: was all put toward making the house better. To be clear,
[9:02] Speaker 1: all of my mother's debts were paid and she had
[9:04] Speaker 1: money set aside for the funeral service and cremation. So,
[9:08] Speaker 1: am I the jerk? Update. My house, still feels weird
[9:13] Speaker 1: saying this, already had outside cameras which I installed when
[9:17] Speaker 1: I moved in. But I added more to the property
[9:19] Speaker 1: line inside the house in key spots and around the garage.
[9:23] Speaker 1: I also put up no trespassing signs while I look
[9:25] Speaker 1: through companies that build proper fences. The property is just
[9:28] Speaker 1: small enough that I can afford to fence it. I
[9:31] Speaker 1: changed the locks as soon as I read advice to
[9:33] Speaker 1: do so. I hadn't thought about it since I work
[9:35] Speaker 1: from home. Mom also kept a spare hidden key in
[9:38] Speaker 1: a plant because my sister used to lose everything constantly
[9:41] Speaker 1: so I made sure to remove it and not replace
[9:43] Speaker 1: it with a new one. It's a good thing I
[9:45] Speaker 1: did all of this because two days after my post
[9:48] Speaker 1: I had to run into town for groceries and a
[9:49] Speaker 1: few quick errands. I live on the outskirts with neighbors
[9:52] Speaker 1: a bit of a distance away so they wouldn't notice
[9:54] Speaker 1: anyone stopping by. I got a notification on my phone
[9:57] Speaker 1: about movement and I checked because I wasn't expecting any packages.
[10:01] Speaker 1: My brother was getting out of his car, looking around
[10:04] Speaker 1: and checking the windows. He tried his key in the
[10:06] Speaker 1: door and got upset when it didn't work. He checked
[10:09] Speaker 1: the flower plant and kicked it over. The cameras around
[10:12] Speaker 1: the house let me communicate so I just said, that
[10:14] Speaker 1: was rude, into the speaker. He jumped and spun around
[10:18] Speaker 1: to see nothing. I asked him what he wanted and
[10:20] Speaker 1: he demanded to know why I put up cameras. I said,
[10:23] Speaker 1: because I'm a single woman living in the woods. He
[10:26] Speaker 1: shifted from foot to foot before saying he would be
[10:28] Speaker 1: back so we could talk. Then he left. I messaged
[10:32] Speaker 1: the video evidence of him trying to get in while
[10:34] Speaker 1: I wasn't home to him, his wife, my sister, and
[10:37] Speaker 1: her fiancé. I included the message, I changed the locks
[10:40] Speaker 1: because I don't know who mom gave them out to,
[10:42] Speaker 1: like her friends, and I have cameras. Because of this
[10:45] Speaker 1: attempt to get in while I'm not home, no one
[10:48] Speaker 1: will be getting the new key. I don't just randomly
[10:50] Speaker 1: try to get into your house when you're not home.
[10:53] Speaker 1: He sent me a lot of nasty texts after that,
[10:55] Speaker 1: trying to shame me for doing it. I told him
[10:57] Speaker 1: he shouldn't be doing things he doesn't want others to
[10:59] Speaker 1: know about and that it's a reflection on him, not me.
[11:02] Speaker 1: He told me I was a jerk and blocked me.
[11:04] Speaker 1: My sister thinks I went too far by telling his
[11:06] Speaker 1: wife because she's threatening to take the kids to her mom's.
[11:10] Speaker 1: She also thinks I went too far by showing her
[11:12] Speaker 1: fiance because now he doesn't want my brother to have
[11:14] Speaker 1: keys to their place for emergencies. Somehow, I get the
[11:17] Speaker 1: feeling this isn't over yet. time to adopt a very
[11:20] Speaker 1: big dog. Update 2. I'm adopting a pair of dogs
[11:24] Speaker 1: for my local shelter. I did start a paper trail
[11:27] Speaker 1: with both the police and a lawyer who's a family friend.
[11:30] Speaker 1: I documented the attempted break-in, didn't press charges but had
[11:33] Speaker 1: them speak with my brother and put him on notice.
[11:36] Speaker 1: He ended up getting new phone numbers, yes, plural, to
[11:39] Speaker 1: contact me and go off on me for sicking the
[11:41] Speaker 1: cops on him. I took all of those messages to
[11:44] Speaker 1: the lawyer and sent off a few things. A cease
[11:46] Speaker 1: and desist for the alarming number of calls, texts, social
[11:50] Speaker 1: media DMs, and emails he sent me. Some were full
[11:52] Speaker 1: of rage about how I took his kids from him,
[11:55] Speaker 1: while others were about how he knew I found the
[11:57] Speaker 1: money in the house. Not once did he mention my post,
[12:01] Speaker 1: and honestly, I'm so done with him that I wouldn't
[12:03] Speaker 1: even care if he saw it. My lawyer says you
[12:05] Speaker 1: can't touch this. My sister, Brittany, asked to go for
[12:09] Speaker 1: coffee and apologized for taking Mason's side. She just didn't
[12:12] Speaker 1: want the friction and thought the three of us could
[12:14] Speaker 1: have worked it out together instead of getting others involved.
[12:17] Speaker 1: She and her fiancé have an understanding that he handles
[12:19] Speaker 1: his family and she handles hers, at least for disputes
[12:22] Speaker 1: and things like that. By sending it to him before
[12:25] Speaker 1: she had a chance to react, it felt like overstepping
[12:27] Speaker 1: because I didn't give her the opportunity to do literally
[12:30] Speaker 1: anything before her fiancé started losing his mind. I did
[12:33] Speaker 1: apologize because I hadn't thought of it like that. I
[12:36] Speaker 1: asked her what she would have done if I had
[12:38] Speaker 1: just sent her the video and she said she would
[12:40] Speaker 1: have sat on it for a day to think about it.
[12:42] Speaker 1: Then she would have probably asked me for more information
[12:45] Speaker 1: or talked to him to see what the heck he
[12:46] Speaker 1: was thinking. She also said that I was a jerk
[12:49] Speaker 1: for telling everyone the gifts were from the house. I
[12:51] Speaker 1: should have said something about a bonus at work or
[12:53] Speaker 1: made up another story. I have no reason to trust
[12:56] Speaker 1: her but it makes sense. So I'm going to cautiously
[12:59] Speaker 1: keep in mind that she has a harder time expressing
[13:01] Speaker 1: thoughts and emotions in a normal way. Our parents weren't
[13:04] Speaker 1: into the whole test your kid for XYZ, so she's
[13:07] Speaker 1: been struggling with whether or not to be tested for
[13:10] Speaker 1: certain neurodivergent tendencies. All that said, I found something really
[13:14] Speaker 1: weird and I don't want to open it. In the basement,
[13:17] Speaker 1: tucked far into a corner and buried under a bookshelf
[13:20] Speaker 1: and behind boxes of things is an ancient looking freezer.
[13:23] Speaker 1: It was, and still is, plugged in. It's running. It
[13:27] Speaker 1: was buried and dusty in a way that makes me
[13:29] Speaker 1: think there's no edible food inside. But you ever get
[13:31] Speaker 1: the feeling that something's just not right? Do I open it?
[13:35] Speaker 1: Do I pretend I never saw it? Do I have
[13:37] Speaker 1: someone else open it? Any ideas about why it was hidden?
[13:40] Speaker 1: My friend joked that it was my grandfather's game box
[13:43] Speaker 1: and it has decade-old deer inside. Is that a thing?
[13:47] Speaker 1: Update 3 I'll get the freezer story out of the
[13:49] Speaker 1: way since I know many are curious. I called over
[13:52] Speaker 1: my lawyer friend, Lawrence, and explained that I needed more
[13:55] Speaker 1: information on a few things but would require a house
[13:58] Speaker 1: call due to contractors coming and going. When he arrived
[14:01] Speaker 1: and saw no one was there, he looked annoyed but
[14:03] Speaker 1: I explained the freezer situation. He laughed, saying that if
[14:06] Speaker 1: we found a body, he was bailing, but he still
[14:08] Speaker 1: came down to the basement. This all happened yesterday. We
[14:12] Speaker 1: put on gloves and masks. Lawrence held the camera, documenting everything,
[14:16] Speaker 1: the date, time, address, and so on. I opened the freezer. Inside,
[14:20] Speaker 1: we found important documents sealed in a lot of plastic
[14:23] Speaker 1: old bottles of moonshine, frozen pressed flowers in a book
[14:27] Speaker 1: with dates, and a bit of cash, mostly coins, and
[14:30] Speaker 1: an ancient-looking porcelain doll. The documents included birth and death certificates,
[14:34] Speaker 1: some dating back quite a while. It seems I would
[14:37] Speaker 1: have had another sibling if they had lived, as well
[14:39] Speaker 1: as three more aunts and a few even older relatives.
[14:42] Speaker 1: We figured the flowers were from funerals or memorial services,
[14:45] Speaker 1: considering the dates attached to the pressed pages. The bottles
[14:48] Speaker 1: of moonshine looked really old. The only reason I knew
[14:51] Speaker 1: it was moonshine was thanks to Lawrence. He said alcohol
[14:54] Speaker 1: doesn't usually freeze, and based on the smell, he was confident.
[14:57] Speaker 1: We'll have the coins appraised soon, so I'm still going
[14:59] Speaker 1: through the other coins I've found in odd places like
[15:02] Speaker 1: the curtains. As for the doll, it looks very old,
[15:05] Speaker 1: but it's in good condition. It was in a box,
[15:07] Speaker 1: wrapped up in cloth, old newspapers and more. Lawrence thinks
[15:10] Speaker 1: the hair on its head might be real human hair
[15:13] Speaker 1: because it doesn't look synthetic. I had to dry it
[15:15] Speaker 1: off after it thawed and there's a smudged name on
[15:18] Speaker 1: its foot. It's currently sitting on my living room coffee
[15:21] Speaker 1: table and I'm not sure what to do with it.
[15:23] Speaker 1: The newspaper dates give us a vague idea of when
[15:25] Speaker 1: it was put away and it's clearly old. And probably possessed.
[15:29] Speaker 1: Now on to Mason. His wife has filed for divorce
[15:32] Speaker 1: and is going for full custody. She has the kids
[15:35] Speaker 1: with her at her mother's house. She reached out to
[15:37] Speaker 1: me explaining that Mason told her the house was willed
[15:40] Speaker 1: to all three siblings and he was waiting for me
[15:42] Speaker 1: to buy out his share. But when I sent that
[15:44] Speaker 1: message about the locks, she got suspicious and started digging.
[15:47] Speaker 1: It turns out Mason maxed out all their credit cards,
[15:50] Speaker 1: took out a reverse mortgage on their house, which has
[15:53] Speaker 1: been paid off, and opened a few accounts in her name.
[15:56] Speaker 1: He didn't use any of the life-changing money left to
[15:59] Speaker 1: him to pay off their debts. She doesn't know where
[16:01] Speaker 1: the money went but when she locked down her credit,
[16:03] Speaker 1: It left him unable to use the cards he opened
[16:05] Speaker 1: in her name, which sparked a huge fight. I can't
[16:08] Speaker 1: even begin to imagine where the money went. He doesn't
[16:11] Speaker 1: have new cars, devices, or anything visible. Their two kids,
[16:14] Speaker 1: who are 14 and 10, are old enough to understand
[16:17] Speaker 1: what's happening. They won't speak to him until he tells
[16:19] Speaker 1: them why they're losing their childhood home, why their mother
[16:22] Speaker 1: is upset at him, and where all the money went.
[16:25] Speaker 1: My niece knows all the accounts are empty, including her
[16:27] Speaker 1: college fund, and she's furious. My nephew isn't as concerned
[16:31] Speaker 1: about college, which is understandable at his age. Mason keeps
[16:34] Speaker 1: messaging me saying, it's all your fault and just being
[16:37] Speaker 1: nasty overall. I would have blocked him if it weren't
[16:40] Speaker 1: for collecting evidence. My sister admitted that he's ranting to
[16:43] Speaker 1: her too, but she doesn't want to upset him because
[16:45] Speaker 1: they live just a few blocks away, making it easy
[16:47] Speaker 1: for him to come knocking. Despite all of this, she
[16:50] Speaker 1: won't be staying with me. My fence construction should be
[16:53] Speaker 1: starting any day now. I'll be getting my two dogs tomorrow.
[16:56] Speaker 1: I think I have everything covered. My fence is being
[16:59] Speaker 1: built and work around the house is still ongoing. I
[17:02] Speaker 1: added a home security system and a few hidden baseball
[17:04] Speaker 1: bats because some of the messages I've received about what
[17:07] Speaker 1: he could do are scary. I added extra locks around
[17:10] Speaker 1: the house and I'm considering getting rid of the sliding
[17:12] Speaker 1: glass door or finding a way to secure it like
[17:14] Speaker 1: a gate. Lawrence warned me that putting too much information
[17:17] Speaker 1: out there might harm my case for a restraining order
[17:20] Speaker 1: and slander, so I don't plan to update any more
[17:22] Speaker 1: in the future. Am I the jerk for implying my
[17:25] Speaker 1: friends are being cheap over my wedding? I, 38 female,
[17:29] Speaker 1: am marrying my fiancé, who's 38, male, next year. I'm
[17:33] Speaker 1: the last of my friends to get married, and honestly,
[17:35] Speaker 1: I had made my peace with being single and getting
[17:37] Speaker 1: a dog before I met my fiancé. I'm part of
[17:40] Speaker 1: a group of six girlfriends who have all known each
[17:42] Speaker 1: other since college. We've been through everything together. Breakups, holidays, weddings, babies,
[17:47] Speaker 1: and promotions. When I told them I got engaged, they
[17:50] Speaker 1: seemed happy and sent me congratulatory messages. However, when everyone
[17:54] Speaker 1: else got engaged, they threw them parties or went out
[17:56] Speaker 1: for dinners to celebrate. but they didn't do anything for me.
[17:59] Speaker 1: I gave them nearly a year's notice for my bachelorette party,
[18:02] Speaker 1: which I'm keeping low-key as I don't want a big event.
[18:05] Speaker 1: We're just going for dinner and drinks at one of
[18:07] Speaker 1: my favorite restaurants in our city. However, slowly, all of
[18:10] Speaker 1: my friends have been dropping out, saying they can't get
[18:12] Speaker 1: a babysitter, have to work late, or they're on a
[18:15] Speaker 1: work trip. I've invited them all to the wedding as well,
[18:18] Speaker 1: which is also a small affair, but one friend has
[18:20] Speaker 1: already messaged the group chat saying she's not sure she
[18:23] Speaker 1: can find a babysitter for that day. My wedding is
[18:26] Speaker 1: months away and I'm finding it hard to believe she
[18:28] Speaker 1: knows that far in advance. Two others have also said
[18:31] Speaker 1: they're not going to stay for the reception because they
[18:33] Speaker 1: will be tired by then. Here's where I may be
[18:36] Speaker 1: the jerk. The straw that broke the camel's back was
[18:38] Speaker 1: when I sent the link to the registry. My fiancé
[18:41] Speaker 1: and I already have a house together so we're asking
[18:44] Speaker 1: for mostly small items with nothing exceeding $ 50. We would
[18:47] Speaker 1: be delighted with anything anyone chooses to buy us. They
[18:50] Speaker 1: sent a message in the chat saying they were going
[18:52] Speaker 1: to band together to get me an air fryer as
[18:54] Speaker 1: a group gift. It cost $ 40, so I was surprised
[18:58] Speaker 1: that they seemed to be chipping in $ 8 each. Over
[19:01] Speaker 1: the years, I must have spent thousands of dollars on
[19:03] Speaker 1: their weddings, two of which were overseas. I've attended dinners
[19:06] Speaker 1: and brunches to celebrate their job promotions and bought gifts
[19:09] Speaker 1: for their babies, all while feeling terrible about myself watching
[19:12] Speaker 1: my friends celebrate the happiness I never thought I would have.
[19:16] Speaker 1: I sent a message just asking for clarification if it
[19:18] Speaker 1: was all of them buying it together or And one replied,
[19:21] Speaker 1: asking if I was calling them cheap. There's been dead
[19:24] Speaker 1: silence since. That wasn't my intention, but it really feels
[19:27] Speaker 1: like because I'm last, they're just over having to do
[19:30] Speaker 1: these events, which is feeding into my insecurity about getting
[19:33] Speaker 1: married so late. They do have legitimate reasons for these things.
[19:36] Speaker 1: They all have lives and kids, and maybe not as
[19:39] Speaker 1: much money as when we were younger. Perhaps I'm just
[19:41] Speaker 1: letting my insecurities get in the way. So Reddit, am
[19:44] Speaker 1: I the jerk? Not the jerk. These people are not
[19:48] Speaker 1: your friends. Find a new friend group. Oh, and they
[19:51] Speaker 1: are cheap. Yeah, these people do not like OP. She's
[19:55] Speaker 1: not picking up on it for some reason. OP seems
[19:58] Speaker 1: to be what I call the leftover friend. Basically, that
[20:01] Speaker 1: one awkward person who has been in your group forever
[20:04] Speaker 1: but isn't really anyone's friend, aside from maybe the one
[20:07] Speaker 1: girl who brought her into the group in the first place. Weddings,
[20:09] Speaker 1: baby showers, and birthdays are perfect times for everyone else
[20:13] Speaker 1: to think, I don't want to be around her. Update.
[20:16] Speaker 1: I wanted to clarify a few questions that were asked.
[20:19] Speaker 1: I didn't care at all what they bought us as
[20:21] Speaker 1: a gift. I didn't care if they got us a
[20:22] Speaker 1: gift at all. It was never about the air fryer.
[20:25] Speaker 1: I really wasn't calling them cheap. I was just clarifying
[20:28] Speaker 1: if it was coming from all of them. I also
[20:30] Speaker 1: didn't ask if they were getting us a gift. They
[20:32] Speaker 1: brought this up themselves. I couldn't put my finger on
[20:35] Speaker 1: why it made me feel a bit weird. I think
[20:37] Speaker 1: the word I was searching for was disrespect. Someone said
[20:40] Speaker 1: an $ 8 gift is worse than no gift, and I
[20:42] Speaker 1: think that's the heart of it. The money issue came
[20:45] Speaker 1: up as well. As far as I know, all my
[20:47] Speaker 1: friends are fairly solvent. We all work in finance field,
[20:50] Speaker 1: mostly as accountants, three of whom are very senior in
[20:53] Speaker 1: their firms, and all of their husbands have good jobs.
[20:56] Speaker 1: So we never discuss money, and I know kids and
[20:58] Speaker 1: the cost of living are high at the moment, so
[21:00] Speaker 1: I'd never want to assume anyone's financial status. However, everyone
[21:03] Speaker 1: seems fine. Another issue that many people asked about is
[21:07] Speaker 1: how often we see each other. The answer is quite regularly.
[21:10] Speaker 1: We made a pact years ago to meet up at
[21:12] Speaker 1: least once a month no matter how crazy life gets
[21:15] Speaker 1: and we've mostly been able to stick to that. The
[21:17] Speaker 1: six of us usually meet on Sunday for brunch. Apart
[21:19] Speaker 1: from that, I live in the same neighborhood as two
[21:21] Speaker 1: of them so we do dinners occasionally and parties for
[21:24] Speaker 1: the kids are a must. The last question was whether
[21:27] Speaker 1: my wedding is child-free. It's not and I love kids.
[21:30] Speaker 1: My friend's kids are surrogate nieces and nephews to me
[21:33] Speaker 1: and they're all invited. The friend who said she couldn't
[21:35] Speaker 1: find childcare stated she didn't want to bring her kids
[21:38] Speaker 1: because weddings are easier without them. Lastly, some suggested they
[21:41] Speaker 1: don't like my fiancé. They've never given me that impression.
[21:44] Speaker 1: Everyone seems to get along well enough and they've known
[21:47] Speaker 1: him for two years. He occasionally goes golfing with some
[21:50] Speaker 1: of their husbands. Reading the comments was like having cold
[21:53] Speaker 1: water thrown over me. I've never considered myself the outsider
[21:56] Speaker 1: friend but a lot of people suggested that I was.
[21:59] Speaker 1: and it really threw me off and overwhelmed me. I
[22:01] Speaker 1: didn't send any messages to the group chat even though
[22:04] Speaker 1: many commenters gave me good suggestions about what to write.
[22:07] Speaker 1: I withdrew into myself until my fiancé prided out of me.
[22:10] Speaker 1: I showed him this post and he got super quiet
[22:12] Speaker 1: and very angry. I've never seen him this angry over anything.
[22:16] Speaker 1: He asked if I had spoken to them about this
[22:18] Speaker 1: and I said no. He started to call them individually
[22:21] Speaker 1: and read them the riot act. He called them $ 8
[22:23] Speaker 1: jerks and said he would be sending them an itemized
[22:26] Speaker 1: list of the thousands of dollars I had spent on
[22:28] Speaker 1: them over the years. He called BS on the one
[22:30] Speaker 1: who said she couldn't get a babysitter and she said
[22:33] Speaker 1: she was sick of having to go to the same
[22:35] Speaker 1: boring weddings over and over and yours won't be any different.
[22:38] Speaker 1: He lost it on her. I hate the idea of
[22:41] Speaker 1: him fighting my battles for me so I asked him
[22:43] Speaker 1: to stop after the third person. I sent a message
[22:45] Speaker 1: to the group chat asking if we could all speak
[22:47] Speaker 1: as a group and the three he called sent voice
[22:50] Speaker 1: messages saying that my fiancé was a psycho and that
[22:53] Speaker 1: they wouldn't speak to me anymore. I felt tired and defeated,
[22:56] Speaker 1: so I sent a message saying that if they didn't
[22:58] Speaker 1: want to be friends anymore, that was fine, and to
[23:00] Speaker 1: consider their invitations withdrawn to the bachelorette and wedding. No
[23:03] Speaker 1: one has replied, so I guess we're done. I suppose
[23:06] Speaker 1: I'm better off, but I don't feel that way. I
[23:08] Speaker 1: just feel numb and sad. They've been such a big
[23:10] Speaker 1: part of my life for so long, and I really
[23:12] Speaker 1: feel the loss. I'm so sad I won't see their
[23:15] Speaker 1: kids anymore. Some of them refer to me as auntie,
[23:17] Speaker 1: and it's making me cry that I won't see them
[23:19] Speaker 1: grow up. My fiancé has apologized for rushing in and
[23:22] Speaker 1: not asking how I wanted to handle it and I've accepted.
[23:25] Speaker 1: We're good and I'm looking forward to our life together.
[23:28] Speaker 1: I mostly wanted to say thank you to the kind
[23:30] Speaker 1: Redditors who showed me the light about this and offered
[23:32] Speaker 1: congratulations on our wedding and even offered to buy us
[23:35] Speaker 1: a gift. As the leftover friend who didn't realize until
[23:39] Speaker 1: my late 20s, this hit me in the feels. It
[23:42] Speaker 1: could definitely have gone on longer but thankfully I came
[23:45] Speaker 1: to my senses. probably in no small part to finally
[23:47] Speaker 1: getting a proper mental health diagnosis. And as for my
[23:50] Speaker 1: last trick, I'll break my own heart by exaggerating my
[23:53] Speaker 1: place in other people's lives. I read a study recently
[23:57] Speaker 1: that said most people nowadays don't actually have friends in general.
[24:01] Speaker 1: I've got all kinds of friends until I wake up
[24:04] Speaker 1: and realize it was just another dream. Relatable Reddit boy,
[24:07] Speaker 1: most relatable. My wife expects me to buy our kids
[24:10] Speaker 1: Starbucks every day. My wife and I adopted Mila, who's 10, Grace,
[24:15] Speaker 1: who's 5, and Lucas, who's 4, from foster care. Grace
[24:19] Speaker 1: and Lucas were in a very loving home that would
[24:21] Speaker 1: have adopted them if they could. We're still in contact
[24:24] Speaker 1: with their foster parents and see them every few months.
[24:26] Speaker 1: Mila's home was horrible. She was the first one that
[24:29] Speaker 1: came to us and we spent nearly a month in
[24:31] Speaker 1: the hospital and she needed a feeding tube when she
[24:33] Speaker 1: came home. Mila has some special needs that are a
[24:36] Speaker 1: direct result of that home. A few months ago, we
[24:39] Speaker 1: got a call asking if we could take a 14-year-old, Cassie,
[24:42] Speaker 1: from the same home that Mila was in. Cassie's needs
[24:44] Speaker 1: aren't as severe as Mila's, but between that and the
[24:47] Speaker 1: fact that she's years behind in school, normal schooling would
[24:50] Speaker 1: have been difficult for her. My sister was a teaching
[24:53] Speaker 1: assistant for special ed at our local school district. It
[24:55] Speaker 1: was so bad that she didn't even last a year there.
[24:58] Speaker 1: When she heard about the girls, she said to not
[25:00] Speaker 1: let them end up in special ed in our district.
[25:03] Speaker 1: My wife quit her job and homeschooled Mila for the
[25:05] Speaker 1: first few months. but she's not a teacher and she
[25:08] Speaker 1: doesn't know how to help Mila the way she needed it.
[25:10] Speaker 1: We started looking for special needs schools and found one
[25:13] Speaker 1: over an hour away that we love. My wife got
[25:16] Speaker 1: a job in the office there so we got cheap
[25:18] Speaker 1: tuition for Mila and eventually Cassie when she started school there.
[25:22] Speaker 1: The girls are doing great at this school and we're
[25:24] Speaker 1: considering moving closer to it to make life easier. The
[25:27] Speaker 1: issue is my wife, Mila and Cassie are out of
[25:30] Speaker 1: the house by 6.30 every morning. Cassie is up at 5.30
[25:34] Speaker 1: and Mila is up at 6.00 They're all tired when
[25:36] Speaker 1: it's time to go to school and work, so as
[25:38] Speaker 1: a treat, they go to Starbucks every morning. Mila gets
[25:41] Speaker 1: a hot chocolate, Cassie is allowed to get a small coffee,
[25:44] Speaker 1: and my wife gets a coffee to help them get
[25:46] Speaker 1: through the morning. They're not always the best at getting
[25:48] Speaker 1: the cups out of the car by the time the
[25:50] Speaker 1: younger two see it, and lately they've been throwing a
[25:52] Speaker 1: temper tantrum every morning when we pass by a Starbucks.
[25:56] Speaker 1: My wife thinks we should just get it for them,
[25:57] Speaker 1: but I don't want to. I think it's a waste
[25:59] Speaker 1: of money and they can have chocolate milk at home.
[26:02] Speaker 1: Am I the jerk for not getting them Starbucks? Why
[26:05] Speaker 1: can't your wife, Cassie, and Mila make their coffee and
[26:08] Speaker 1: hot chocolate at home and take them in reusable cups?
[26:11] Speaker 1: Then the other kids can have the same hot chocolate.
[26:13] Speaker 1: Remove overpriced Starbucks from the equation. ETA. There's way too
[26:18] Speaker 1: much unnecessary arguing and disrespectful communication happening in this thread.
[26:22] Speaker 1: I feel my intentions are being sorely misunderstood and dissimilar
[26:25] Speaker 1: comparisons are being made. I'm sorry if what I've said
[26:28] Speaker 1: is offensive to anyone. Not the jerk. Kids can't always
[26:31] Speaker 1: get what they want. They need to learn this quickly. Also,
[26:35] Speaker 1: while I do not know your financial situation, Starbucks is expensive,
[26:39] Speaker 1: and that can add up quickly between four kids. Oh,
[26:41] Speaker 1: finally some common sense. Even more if you two buy something.
[26:45] Speaker 1: Coffee can be made at home for cheap. Get a
[26:47] Speaker 1: few creamers, non-dairy creamers, maybe even an appliance, whipped cream,
[26:51] Speaker 1: chocolate and caramel syrups, and voila. My wife and I
[26:55] Speaker 1: were both Starbucks junkies. Multiple trips a week, and not
[26:58] Speaker 1: the cheap brewed stuff usually. For Christmas two years ago,
[27:02] Speaker 1: my wife gave me some very fancy coffee-making equipment. We
[27:05] Speaker 1: immediately bought an entire selection of flavored syrups, chocolate, and
[27:09] Speaker 1: white chocolate sauce and caramel. I've bought two cups of
[27:11] Speaker 1: Starbucks since. It's an expensive one-time outlay. We put about $ 2, 000
[27:16] Speaker 1: into the coffee bar at home, but at three cups
[27:18] Speaker 1: a day, five days a week, and an average of
[27:21] Speaker 1: $ 4 a cup, do the math. That's $ 3, 100 a year
[27:25] Speaker 1: in coffee. The setup would pay for itself in a
[27:27] Speaker 1: year or so. In my opinion, no jerks here. What's
[27:31] Speaker 1: with all these people suddenly freaking out about sugar when
[27:34] Speaker 1: it's a hot chocolate and a small coffee after you've
[27:36] Speaker 1: woken up at 5am? Just tell the youngest kids they
[27:40] Speaker 1: can have Starbucks when they're older or when they take
[27:42] Speaker 1: part in the early morning routine. They'll survive. I don't
[27:45] Speaker 1: get all of you, you're a jerk for even looking
[27:47] Speaker 1: at Starbucks. Yeah, I also don't understand all these people
[27:51] Speaker 1: freaking out over hot chocolate and small coffee. What's wrong
[27:54] Speaker 1: with getting them a little treat for waking up at
[27:56] Speaker 1: the crack of dawn? It's really not that much sugar
[27:59] Speaker 1: or that much caffeine. Am I the jerk for teaching
[28:02] Speaker 1: my son to call me dad against his mother's wishes?
[28:05] Speaker 1: I hooked up with a woman named Mary that I
[28:07] Speaker 1: didn't know at a party in 2016. About a year ago,
[28:10] Speaker 1: someone reached out to me and told me she knew
[28:12] Speaker 1: Mary and her now six-year-old son was mine. This person
[28:16] Speaker 1: hadn't known my name until meeting another friend of mine
[28:19] Speaker 1: and they figured it out. Apparently, Mary had started dating someone, John,
[28:23] Speaker 1: just after we hooked up, then found out she was pregnant.
[28:26] Speaker 1: Mary and John got serious, got married, and John adopted
[28:29] Speaker 1: my son. After I found out, I got a lawyer
[28:32] Speaker 1: and filed for custody in my state. Mary and John
[28:35] Speaker 1: fought me through the whole process, telling me not to
[28:37] Speaker 1: break up their family. They have a younger daughter together.
[28:40] Speaker 1: After lots of legal fees, I finally forced a paternity
[28:43] Speaker 1: test and got every other weekend. My intent is to
[28:46] Speaker 1: keep pushing until I have 50-50 custody. I looked into
[28:49] Speaker 1: reversing the adoption, but it's basically impossible. So I'll probably
[28:53] Speaker 1: have to wait until my son is 18 I've been
[28:56] Speaker 1: having my son over for the past few months and
[28:58] Speaker 1: it's been great. He gets along great with my girlfriend too.
[29:01] Speaker 1: He understands that I'm his father but of course he
[29:04] Speaker 1: calls John dad. I'm not trying to get him to
[29:06] Speaker 1: stop that because I don't want to confuse him or
[29:08] Speaker 1: make him uneasy. But last weekend I did tell him
[29:11] Speaker 1: that he can call me dad too instead of Mr.
[29:13] Speaker 1: Last Name like his mom told him to. He seemed
[29:16] Speaker 1: fine with it and called me dad while he was
[29:18] Speaker 1: with me. His mom found out and has been pestering
[29:21] Speaker 1: me all week saying that I'm just a donor. and
[29:23] Speaker 1: John is his real dad and she'll take me to
[29:25] Speaker 1: court for parental alienation. The last thing she said was
[29:28] Speaker 1: that I can be an uncle, but my son only
[29:30] Speaker 1: has one dad. I'm ignoring most of what she said,
[29:34] Speaker 1: but I'm wondering if I am the jerk for asking
[29:35] Speaker 1: my son to call me dad in this situation. Edit.
[29:39] Speaker 1: Some people are asking how I could gain parental rights adoption.
[29:42] Speaker 1: It is possible because I did not consent to the
[29:44] Speaker 1: adoption and Mary claimed she did not know the father.
[29:47] Speaker 1: The birth certificate was blank for father. John decided to
[29:51] Speaker 1: adopt when my son was one year old and he
[29:53] Speaker 1: got married to Mary. She's going to take you to
[29:56] Speaker 1: court for parental alienation? Oh, I'd love to see that one.
[29:59] Speaker 1: Your honor, this man that I hooked up with, the
[30:02] Speaker 1: donor for my baby, I never told him and lied
[30:05] Speaker 1: about knowing who he was so that I could have
[30:07] Speaker 1: my new husband adopt him. I then fought tooth and
[30:10] Speaker 1: nail to keep them from ever meeting and getting to
[30:12] Speaker 1: know each other. This man actually told his son that
[30:15] Speaker 1: he could call him dad, causing our son to be
[30:17] Speaker 1: alienated from his adoptive father. In case my opinion is
[30:20] Speaker 1: not clear, you're not the jerk and there's no reason
[30:23] Speaker 1: this kid can't have two dads. Not the jerk. And
[30:26] Speaker 1: it's great that you clearly want to be a parent
[30:28] Speaker 1: to your kid that you just found out about. I
[30:30] Speaker 1: do kind of hope you've spoken with a child therapist
[30:33] Speaker 1: to make sure you're handling this as best you can
[30:35] Speaker 1: to help your kid understand what's happening and get him
[30:37] Speaker 1: help if he needs some help processing everything. And you
[30:40] Speaker 1: could always approach other terms for dad, like pop, daddy-o,
[30:43] Speaker 1: or something else, and see what else you could come
[30:45] Speaker 1: up with and what he's comfortable with. Plenty of kids
[30:48] Speaker 1: have two dads, and I hope you can all find peace.
[30:50] Speaker 1: The more love a kid has, the better. You're the jerk.
[30:54] Speaker 1: The kid is 6 and you've done nothing ever to
[30:57] Speaker 1: be a dad to him until now. The kid has
[30:59] Speaker 1: a stable life with his mother and adoptive father. That's
[31:02] Speaker 1: his home. That's the only life he's ever known. Wanting
[31:05] Speaker 1: to suddenly have 50-50 custody to uproot his stability is
[31:08] Speaker 1: not in his best interests. It's selfish. You want this
[31:11] Speaker 1: for you, not for your kid. The kid barely knows you,
[31:14] Speaker 1: you're not family to him, and to tear him away
[31:16] Speaker 1: 50% of the time from the only family he's ever
[31:19] Speaker 1: known is gross. OP is this kid's dad and it's
[31:23] Speaker 1: through no fault of his own that he's had no
[31:25] Speaker 1: contact until now. That's on the mother. How can you
[31:28] Speaker 1: say it's not in the kid's best interest to have
[31:30] Speaker 1: his biological dad who wants to be a loving and
[31:32] Speaker 1: caring parent in his life? That's crazy. Kids can adapt
