[0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome to r slash am I the jerk, where a
[0:02] Speaker 1: wild Karen demands OP be her designated driver. Am I
[0:06] Speaker 1: the jerk for refusing to be the designated driver for
[0:09] Speaker 1: the new girl of the friend group? I, 33 male,
[0:12] Speaker 1: met my friend group, Laura, 32 female, Anthony, 31 male,
[0:16] Speaker 1: and Julie, 28 female, when I moved to Paris for
[0:18] Speaker 1: work around 8 years ago. When we go out, here's
[0:21] Speaker 1: the deal. I'm the only one with a driver's license,
[0:24] Speaker 1: so I'm the designated driver. I drive and pay for
[0:27] Speaker 1: the gas, parking, etc., everything related to the car, in
[0:31] Speaker 1: exchange for one Coke per passenger. During the night, if needed,
[0:35] Speaker 1: I'll go with you to retrieve something from my car,
[0:37] Speaker 1: a coat, cigs, makeup, cash, etc. When it's time to leave,
[0:41] Speaker 1: I'll drive everyone to their place and walk them to
[0:44] Speaker 1: their door while the others wait in the car. The
[0:46] Speaker 1: problem started a few weeks ago. We were already at
[0:49] Speaker 1: the bar when Marie, who's 29, Anthony's new girlfriend, went
[0:53] Speaker 1: to take a second or third round. I asked her
[0:56] Speaker 1: to get me a Coke and she asked for my
[0:57] Speaker 1: credit card. Before I could say anything, Anthony just said,
[1:01] Speaker 1: come on babe, I explained to you how it works,
[1:04] Speaker 1: don't make a scene. She just replied, ugh, walked to
[1:08] Speaker 1: the bar and came back with just her drink. I
[1:10] Speaker 1: looked at Anthony, rolled my eyes, ordered myself a coke
[1:14] Speaker 1: and moved on. Later that night, Laura came to ask
[1:17] Speaker 1: me for my car keys and told me not to
[1:19] Speaker 1: come along, that all the girls were going together. Reading
[1:22] Speaker 1: between the lines, I understood that it was to get
[1:24] Speaker 1: feminine hygiene products and Both Laura and Julie know that
[1:27] Speaker 1: I keep them in my car in case they happen
[1:29] Speaker 1: to need them. A few minutes later, Marie came back,
[1:33] Speaker 1: charging at me and screaming at me that I'm a weirdo.
[1:36] Speaker 1: She asked why I would have feminine hygiene products in
[1:39] Speaker 1: my car, saying that she was right not to buy
[1:41] Speaker 1: me a Coke since I'm a weirdo, a freeloader, and
[1:44] Speaker 1: other names that she called me. She created such a
[1:46] Speaker 1: scene that we were all kicked out of the bar.
[1:49] Speaker 1: While walking back to my car, Marie kept up her act,
[1:52] Speaker 1: screaming insults and other names at me while fake crying.
[1:55] Speaker 1: So I snapped and told her, listen to me, jerk.
[1:58] Speaker 1: Enjoy your ride home because it will be your first
[2:00] Speaker 1: and last one. I won't leave you here and I'll
[2:03] Speaker 1: make sure you get home safe, only out of respect
[2:05] Speaker 1: to your boyfriend. But after that, you can find your
[2:08] Speaker 1: own way to and from the club and the bar.
[2:11] Speaker 1: After that, we all got to the car and the
[2:13] Speaker 1: ride home was very quiet. Fast forward to this weekend.
[2:17] Speaker 1: In the group chat, we were planning a night out,
[2:19] Speaker 1: the first one since the incident. Marie, who joined the
[2:22] Speaker 1: group chat, asked for my address and gave me hers
[2:25] Speaker 1: so I could drive her home. I just reminded her
[2:27] Speaker 1: of what happened a few weeks ago, that I was serious,
[2:30] Speaker 1: that I wouldn't drive her home and that I don't
[2:32] Speaker 1: want her at my place at the moment. She called
[2:34] Speaker 1: me petty before leaving the group chat. Now the friend
[2:37] Speaker 1: group is divided. Anthony said he's staying out of it
[2:40] Speaker 1: while Julie and Laura don't agree on whether Marie is
[2:43] Speaker 1: right or not. So tell me Reddit, am I the jerk?
[2:47] Speaker 1: Not the jerk. She behaved horribly. You don't owe her
[2:50] Speaker 1: a thing. I'm not sure I would have driven her
[2:53] Speaker 1: home that first evening, so you're a better person than
[2:55] Speaker 1: I am. My husband, who's 25, has asked to start
[2:59] Speaker 1: going on regular dates with me again. I'm 26, female,
[3:02] Speaker 1: and I'm a little sad. My husband, John, and I
[3:05] Speaker 1: have been married for over two years and dated for
[3:08] Speaker 1: about three years before that. Overall, we have a healthy
[3:11] Speaker 1: relationship with good communication. When we first got married, we
[3:14] Speaker 1: used to go on lots of dates. Not necessarily anything big,
[3:18] Speaker 1: sometimes just coffee or a drive. but we made an
[3:20] Speaker 1: effort to get out of the house together for quality time.
[3:23] Speaker 1: As time passed, I took on more freelance work, keeping
[3:26] Speaker 1: me busier, and he started saying that he was too
[3:28] Speaker 1: tired or didn't feel like getting ready to go out
[3:30] Speaker 1: after work or on his days off. Up until now,
[3:33] Speaker 1: I haven't had an issue with it. He does work
[3:35] Speaker 1: a lot, and I don't blame him at all. But
[3:38] Speaker 1: here's where things have changed. A couple of months ago,
[3:41] Speaker 1: he got really interested in digital marketing, basically selling products online.
[3:45] Speaker 1: He bought an expensive course to help him learn and
[3:48] Speaker 1: he's been trying consistently to post three times a day
[3:50] Speaker 1: to build a following on a new Instagram account. He's
[3:53] Speaker 1: really putting a lot of work into this. I'm not
[3:55] Speaker 1: holding my breath that it will work out for several
[3:57] Speaker 1: reasons that I won't get into here, but I've never
[4:00] Speaker 1: discouraged him from doing it. When he gets stressed, I
[4:03] Speaker 1: encourage him, and I often tell him that I'm proud
[4:05] Speaker 1: of all of his hard work. I genuinely am. I
[4:08] Speaker 1: only mention that to show I'm not against him trying
[4:10] Speaker 1: this out and I haven't put him down for it ever.
[4:13] Speaker 1: But this is why I've gotten a little sad. Last week,
[4:16] Speaker 1: we went on a cute date after he got off
[4:17] Speaker 1: work on Saturday and I loved it. We laughed, talked,
[4:21] Speaker 1: and generally had a great time like those first dates
[4:23] Speaker 1: after getting married. While we were on the date, I
[4:26] Speaker 1: had an idea for a cute reel that took maybe
[4:28] Speaker 1: 5 minutes to record and then I put my phone
[4:30] Speaker 1: away for the rest of the time. When we got home,
[4:33] Speaker 1: I created and posted the reel, adding him as a
[4:35] Speaker 1: collaborator with his new digital marketing Instagram account. At his request,
[4:40] Speaker 1: he's been advised to post real-life things, not just videos
[4:43] Speaker 1: trying to sell. No biggie, I didn't mind. Well, since
[4:47] Speaker 1: I already have a following, small but bigger than his,
[4:50] Speaker 1: that reel did better than any of the other ones
[4:52] Speaker 1: on his account. Great, we both thought. But now he's
[4:55] Speaker 1: asked to go on a small date every Saturday. At first,
[4:59] Speaker 1: I was so happy. I'd love to get back to
[5:01] Speaker 1: our regular dates. but he then said it would be
[5:03] Speaker 1: so that we can get content for his page. He
[5:06] Speaker 1: asked if I could be a collaborator on all or
[5:08] Speaker 1: most of the posts, but he wants to post them
[5:10] Speaker 1: himself so he gets the credit for the engagement. I
[5:14] Speaker 1: guess all the views and likes, etc. don't actually bump
[5:16] Speaker 1: his page analytics since I was the one who created
[5:18] Speaker 1: the post. I'm feeling hurt because, for over a year,
[5:22] Speaker 1: he hasn't shown much interest in taking me out. Now,
[5:25] Speaker 1: all of a sudden, because he needs content and saw
[5:27] Speaker 1: how I could help his view count get up, he
[5:29] Speaker 1: wants to go on dates. I guess I'm just feeling
[5:32] Speaker 1: used and like I'm not any kind of priority. I
[5:35] Speaker 1: feel like the dates won't even count as actual dates
[5:37] Speaker 1: because he's not asking to go out to spend time
[5:39] Speaker 1: with me. I want to reiterate that I'm not opposed
[5:42] Speaker 1: to him doing this side job and I'm not even
[5:44] Speaker 1: opposed to helping him or collaborating on posts, though I'd
[5:47] Speaker 1: prefer not to do it every week. I'm actually really
[5:50] Speaker 1: happy whether or not it works out as a moneymaker
[5:52] Speaker 1: that he's putting a lot of effort into something that
[5:54] Speaker 1: excites him. I haven't seen him this into anything maybe ever.
[5:58] Speaker 1: The last thing I want to do is make him
[6:00] Speaker 1: feel bad or discourage him in his new endeavor. Should
[6:03] Speaker 1: I just be grateful to be going out on dates again?
[6:05] Speaker 1: Am I being selfish? Edit. Because so many people are
[6:08] Speaker 1: getting hung up on a double standard of me making
[6:11] Speaker 1: content on the date. but not wanting him to, I
[6:14] Speaker 1: just want to clarify that I'm not a content creator
[6:16] Speaker 1: by any means. I asked if he'd want to do
[6:18] Speaker 1: this real and he said yes. It's not a regular
[6:21] Speaker 1: thing as I don't post much. To me, the difference
[6:23] Speaker 1: here is that the whole point of these dates moving
[6:26] Speaker 1: forward will be to get content and for him, it
[6:28] Speaker 1: will be work. Whereas for me, it was just a
[6:31] Speaker 1: fun thing for us. Maybe this doesn't make a difference,
[6:34] Speaker 1: but that's just how I see it in my head.
[6:36] Speaker 1: not the jerk. So he's in an MLM and he
[6:39] Speaker 1: admitted that his wanting to go out with you is
[6:42] Speaker 1: to support his cultish business rather than because he values
[6:45] Speaker 1: the time. That hurts, I get it, and I'm sorry.
[6:49] Speaker 1: I do want to say that these MLMs are very scripted,
[6:51] Speaker 1: high pressure, and designed to make people think if they
[6:54] Speaker 1: fail that they're at fault, despite the actual setup being
[6:57] Speaker 1: a massive reason for the failure. They literally borrow cult
[7:00] Speaker 1: tactics to prey on people. I think you should talk
[7:03] Speaker 1: about your feelings, but I also think you should tread
[7:05] Speaker 1: lightly because the whole system is designed for him to
[7:08] Speaker 1: be defensive if you bring up reason. It's part of
[7:10] Speaker 1: the gig. How about you tell him how you feel
[7:14] Speaker 1: and that a date is a date and reels are
[7:16] Speaker 1: for work. If he wants to go on dates just
[7:18] Speaker 1: to get views, those can be one out of every
[7:20] Speaker 1: five dates if you're comfortable with that. Communicate with him.
[7:24] Speaker 1: Update Many of the comments said that the best thing
[7:27] Speaker 1: to do was probably just take the win and find
[7:29] Speaker 1: the good in my situation, but if it's really bothering me,
[7:32] Speaker 1: bring it up to him. I honestly didn't want to,
[7:35] Speaker 1: but I didn't want to be upset on every date either,
[7:38] Speaker 1: so I decided to give it a trial run and
[7:40] Speaker 1: see how I felt after. I waited two weeks to
[7:42] Speaker 1: make a decision and chose to go ahead and mention
[7:44] Speaker 1: it to him. For those of you who think I'm
[7:46] Speaker 1: some dramatic jerk whose husband could never do enough to
[7:49] Speaker 1: make her happy, I told him that I was sure
[7:51] Speaker 1: how I felt wasn't how he intended to come across.
[7:54] Speaker 1: but then explained what I had been thinking. Sure enough,
[7:57] Speaker 1: as many of you said, he was just getting two
[7:59] Speaker 1: birds with one stone. I told him I was totally
[8:02] Speaker 1: fine creating content on our dates, but I just didn't
[8:04] Speaker 1: want to feel like it was the reason why we
[8:06] Speaker 1: were out on the date. He said that he understood
[8:09] Speaker 1: and would be careful about it and that if I
[8:11] Speaker 1: was bothered or wanted to have a no content date,
[8:13] Speaker 1: I should just let him know. So that's the good part.
[8:16] Speaker 1: The next part is a little tougher. Per the advice
[8:18] Speaker 1: of a couple of you with either digital marketing or
[8:21] Speaker 1: MLM experience, I had the tough pyramid scheme talk. I
[8:24] Speaker 1: told him before, during, and after this conversation that no
[8:28] Speaker 1: matter what he chooses to do, I'll support him and
[8:30] Speaker 1: help him. But I also explained to him a few things.
[8:33] Speaker 1: I explained how the marketing was misleading, how most people
[8:36] Speaker 1: lose money instead of making it, and how they will
[8:38] Speaker 1: keep trying to get him to spend more money to
[8:40] Speaker 1: make it work, etc. I also suggested that he track
[8:43] Speaker 1: his hours of learning, content creating, and posting and so
[8:46] Speaker 1: that even if he does start making sales, he can
[8:49] Speaker 1: decide if the time is worth the payout. I probably
[8:51] Speaker 1: mentioned other things as well, but I don't remember what.
[8:54] Speaker 1: I have always been very anti-MLM and like to think
[8:58] Speaker 1: that I know a lot about it, so I just
[9:00] Speaker 1: tried to give him all the basic info in a
[9:01] Speaker 1: kind way. After all that, I told him if he
[9:04] Speaker 1: wanted to keep trying, I was for it, as long
[9:06] Speaker 1: as he doesn't invest any more money before he makes some.
[9:09] Speaker 1: I also told him how proud I was of all
[9:11] Speaker 1: the work he's put into his side hustle so far,
[9:14] Speaker 1: how I loved that he was excited about it, and
[9:16] Speaker 1: how he's been getting up early to work out because
[9:18] Speaker 1: of it. He records parts of his workouts, but actually
[9:21] Speaker 1: does a full workout or a run, and I love
[9:23] Speaker 1: how it's energized him. Understandably, he was a little sad
[9:26] Speaker 1: and quiet, but he understood everything and wasn't mad at all.
[9:30] Speaker 1: This was all last night, and he was totally back
[9:32] Speaker 1: to normal before bed, and he's continued posting today. So
[9:35] Speaker 1: I guess I didn't hurt his feelings or discourage him
[9:37] Speaker 1: like I thought I might. That's the whole reason I
[9:40] Speaker 1: waited so long. But I guess it would have been
[9:42] Speaker 1: fine all along. I'm looking forward to our weekly dates
[9:45] Speaker 1: and the fact that we will be able to look
[9:46] Speaker 1: back and remember them all since we will have videos
[9:49] Speaker 1: from each one. I don't think this is over. MLMs
[9:54] Speaker 1: don't let their victims go easily. They keep asking for
[9:57] Speaker 1: more money and more commitment. So, we don't always have
[10:01] Speaker 1: to support our partners. Sometimes our partners are very dumb
[10:04] Speaker 1: and fall for MLMs. Am I the jerk for telling
[10:08] Speaker 1: my sister that it's implied she'd have to pitch in
[10:10] Speaker 1: around the house if she's staying here rent-free? I, 29, female,
[10:14] Speaker 1: inherited a house from my maternal grandma. It's near the city,
[10:18] Speaker 1: so I can get to work, and it's big enough
[10:19] Speaker 1: for me, my two kids, and my husband. Even with
[10:22] Speaker 1: our two salaries, my husband and I wouldn't ever be
[10:25] Speaker 1: able to afford a home like this, even though we're
[10:27] Speaker 1: pretty frugal and we have savings. The housing market is
[10:30] Speaker 1: tough right now, and we were extremely fortunate. My half-sister, Ella,
[10:34] Speaker 1: who's 25, from my dad's side, and I are very close.
[10:37] Speaker 1: She landed a new job in the city center. On
[10:40] Speaker 1: her salary, she can't afford to rent a place in
[10:42] Speaker 1: the city center area. and living on the outskirts and
[10:44] Speaker 1: paying for a train there and back is not cost-effective.
[10:48] Speaker 1: She asked me if she could move in, as this
[10:49] Speaker 1: was her dream industry. Although the pay wasn't great, it
[10:53] Speaker 1: was for experience, and once she had saved enough, she
[10:56] Speaker 1: could get on her own feet. Ella got laid off
[10:58] Speaker 1: around Christmas and had been trying really hard to find work,
[11:01] Speaker 1: so I offered her the guest bedroom. She said she'd
[11:04] Speaker 1: help around the house. She's been here a month and
[11:06] Speaker 1: has been busy with her new job. I've asked her
[11:09] Speaker 1: occasionally to help out, make dinner or put the kids
[11:11] Speaker 1: to bed if my husband and I are running late
[11:13] Speaker 1: and it's been fine so far. I asked her on
[11:16] Speaker 1: her work from home day to pick up my youngest
[11:18] Speaker 1: from school because the nurse said that she was sick.
[11:21] Speaker 1: I couldn't reach my husband, there were major train delays
[11:24] Speaker 1: so it would take me at least an hour and
[11:26] Speaker 1: my house is a 5 minute walk from my kid's school.
[11:29] Speaker 1: Ella texted me back to say that she was working
[11:31] Speaker 1: but she had tried to pick up her niece when
[11:33] Speaker 1: her meeting finished. I got upset. My daughter was sick
[11:36] Speaker 1: and Ella said she would try to pick her up
[11:39] Speaker 1: after her meeting. I asked her to call her boss
[11:41] Speaker 1: and tell her that she needs 20 minutes to pick
[11:44] Speaker 1: up her niece due to a family emergency and then
[11:46] Speaker 1: she could continue working. Ella argued that she still had
[11:49] Speaker 1: to work for the rest of the day and didn't
[11:51] Speaker 1: have time to babysit her niece. I told her that
[11:54] Speaker 1: I expected her to help around the house when she
[11:56] Speaker 1: moved in and she said that she wasn't free labor.
[11:59] Speaker 1: There's tension in the house now and I want a
[12:01] Speaker 1: second opinion. I didn't call her boss. I asked her
[12:05] Speaker 1: to call her boss and ask. You offered her a
[12:09] Speaker 1: room to stay in to help her with her career
[12:11] Speaker 1: and then you expect her to drop everything at your convenience?
[12:14] Speaker 1: Working from home is still working. It doesn't mean she's
[12:17] Speaker 1: free to do whatever you need, even if it's an
[12:19] Speaker 1: emergency with your kids. Your kids are not her responsibility.
[12:22] Speaker 1: and she was busy with work. Quite honestly, even if
[12:25] Speaker 1: she was at home doing nothing, she's entitled to her
[12:28] Speaker 1: free time. You deceived her by offering her a place
[12:31] Speaker 1: to stay and never telling her she was expected to
[12:33] Speaker 1: pay in labor, and what's worse, in very uncertain ways,
[12:37] Speaker 1: she can't plan for. If you're not happy with this situation,
[12:40] Speaker 1: better tell her that she can't stay or that she
[12:42] Speaker 1: needs to pay rent and give her a reasonable time
[12:45] Speaker 1: to replan. And telling her to call her boss is
[12:47] Speaker 1: still out of line. You could have called your own
[12:49] Speaker 1: boss instead of expecting her to go out of her
[12:52] Speaker 1: way at work to solve your problems. And picking your
[12:55] Speaker 1: kid up is not a 5 minute walk away. It
[12:57] Speaker 1: also means babysitting and caring for a sick kid until
[13:00] Speaker 1: you get home. It seems like you think your job
[13:03] Speaker 1: is more important than hers and you're disguising it as
[13:05] Speaker 1: chipping in. She never signed up for that and you
[13:08] Speaker 1: can't suddenly say that it was implicit or you expected
[13:11] Speaker 1: that without ever telling her. Am I the jerk for
[13:14] Speaker 1: making my son, who's 16, pay for his own room?
[13:18] Speaker 1: I'm a single mom of five kids, who are 16, 14, 10, 9,
[13:22] Speaker 1: and 7, renting a three-bedroom house. Up until two months ago,
[13:26] Speaker 1: my two eldest boys shared a room, the three youngest shared,
[13:29] Speaker 1: and I had the smallest room. For the last few years,
[13:32] Speaker 1: my eldest complained non-stop about having to share a room
[13:35] Speaker 1: with his little brother. Most of his friend's parents are wealthy,
[13:38] Speaker 1: so he's constantly comparing our situation to theirs. He started
[13:42] Speaker 1: working when he was 14, a few hours a week,
[13:44] Speaker 1: for a little extra money. Now at 16 he works
[13:47] Speaker 1: a lot, more than I would like, and this summer
[13:50] Speaker 1: he's been working basically full time. He's not too bad
[13:53] Speaker 1: with his money and actually saves some of it, but
[13:55] Speaker 1: the rest goes to video games, clothes, shoes, and junk food.
[13:59] Speaker 1: Two months ago my son and I were discussing his
[14:01] Speaker 1: distaste for sharing a room with his brother And he
[14:04] Speaker 1: said he'd drop out of school now if it meant
[14:06] Speaker 1: he could move out onto his own space. I told
[14:09] Speaker 1: him I had looked at four-bedroom rentals in our area,
[14:11] Speaker 1: but they were just too expensive. He asked if he
[14:14] Speaker 1: could pay the difference if we moved. I told him no,
[14:16] Speaker 1: because during the school year, all his money would be
[14:19] Speaker 1: going to rent, not his saving and spending money. That
[14:22] Speaker 1: obviously wouldn't sit right with me. However, we did come
[14:25] Speaker 1: up with a compromise. For $ 50 a month, he could
[14:28] Speaker 1: have his bedroom and my 10-year-old could move in with
[14:30] Speaker 1: the 14-year-old while I would sleep in our living room.
[14:33] Speaker 1: Our couch is already a pullout. That was two months
[14:36] Speaker 1: ago and we already made the switch and everyone's happy
[14:38] Speaker 1: with the new setup. All the money my son is
[14:41] Speaker 1: paying me is going straight into my Christmas savings and
[14:44] Speaker 1: then after Christmas it will go into a summer trip savings.
[14:47] Speaker 1: I recently told some of my friends what I was
[14:49] Speaker 1: doing and they're against it. They think I'm wrong for
[14:51] Speaker 1: taking any amount of money from my kids and a
[14:54] Speaker 1: couple of them said that I should have just given
[14:55] Speaker 1: him the room without making him pay for it. They
[14:58] Speaker 1: make some good points and I don't totally disagree and
[15:00] Speaker 1: it makes me feel like a jerk. My 14-year-old son
[15:03] Speaker 1: is also unhappy about the arrangement. He thinks it's unfair
[15:06] Speaker 1: that his older brother is getting his own room and
[15:08] Speaker 1: that the middle brother should have stayed in his old room.
[15:11] Speaker 1: I can see how he feels it's unfair that his
[15:13] Speaker 1: older brother has the chance to pay for his own
[15:15] Speaker 1: room when he and the other kids don't have the
[15:17] Speaker 1: same opportunity. There's a wild difference between charging your kids
[15:22] Speaker 1: rent and accepting $ 50 a month that's going back to
[15:25] Speaker 1: the kids, so a growing teenager can have his privacy.
[15:28] Speaker 1: No other kids are getting less, and no one is
[15:30] Speaker 1: a jerk by any means. Not exactly an ideal solution,
[15:33] Speaker 1: but tricky problems require unconventional solutions. Not the jerk. Your
[15:39] Speaker 1: eldest wanted his own space, and you found a solution
[15:41] Speaker 1: that works for everyone without breaking the bank. He gets privacy,
[15:45] Speaker 1: you get some help with expenses, and everyone else adjusts.
[15:48] Speaker 1: Sounds like a win-win, right? But the fact that your
[15:51] Speaker 1: 14-year-old is feeling left out? Yeah, that's the fly in
[15:54] Speaker 1: the ointment. Making your son pay a small amount for
[15:57] Speaker 1: the room isn't the issue. It teaches him responsibility. But
[16:00] Speaker 1: the fairness aspect with the other kids needs to be addressed.
[16:03] Speaker 1: Maybe it's time for a family powwow to discuss how
[16:05] Speaker 1: this arrangement works and why it was made. It might
[16:08] Speaker 1: not make everyone happy, but at least they'll understand the reasoning.
[16:11] Speaker 1: No jerks here. You're trying to make the best out
[16:13] Speaker 1: of a tough situation. Just keep the communication open with
[16:16] Speaker 1: all of your kids so no one feels like they're
[16:18] Speaker 1: getting the short end of the stick. Or the short
[16:21] Speaker 1: end of the couch, in your case. Have you lost
[16:24] Speaker 1: your husband? You don't get a survivor's pension or death
[16:27] Speaker 1: benefit for your spouse? Or are they all from different fathers?
[16:30] Speaker 1: Why did you decide to have so many kids without
[16:32] Speaker 1: being able to provide for them with better conditions? I'm
[16:35] Speaker 1: not against kids, but I always wonder why people have
[16:38] Speaker 1: so many kids if they can't provide for them. Jeez Louise,
[16:42] Speaker 1: I always wonder why people have so many unkind and
[16:45] Speaker 1: judgmental opinions when they are so lacking in basic knowledge
[16:48] Speaker 1: about the realities of most of their fellow humans. There
[16:51] Speaker 1: are all kinds of reasons a woman can end up
[16:54] Speaker 1: being a single mom to five kids that are none
[16:56] Speaker 1: of your business and have no bearing on the question
[16:58] Speaker 1: at hand. And whatever place of privilege you are coming from,
[17:02] Speaker 1: you apparently need a newsflash that not everybody everywhere has
[17:05] Speaker 1: survivor's benefits if their spouse passes away. And of course,
[17:09] Speaker 1: gets none of those things if a spouse ups and leaves,
[17:12] Speaker 1: or mistreats them until they get brave enough to leave, etc.
[17:17] Speaker 1: Boss told me how to organize my tools. I've been
[17:20] Speaker 1: a mechanic for nearly 15 years. I'm the lead tech
[17:24] Speaker 1: in my shop and my company recently sold to a
[17:26] Speaker 1: different corporation. bringing with it a new boss. A bit
[17:30] Speaker 1: of history about the new boss. He's 22 and the
[17:33] Speaker 1: son of one of my former bosses, so there is
[17:35] Speaker 1: some suspicion of nepotism. The older boss was a ruthless jerk,
[17:39] Speaker 1: which really dented my confidence as a mechanic. I may
[17:42] Speaker 1: hold a grudge against the family, but I try to
[17:44] Speaker 1: move on and just do my job. The new boss
[17:46] Speaker 1: and I have had some minor issues over the last
[17:48] Speaker 1: three months that he's been here, but I'm generally the
[17:51] Speaker 1: type of person who can put my feelings aside if
[17:53] Speaker 1: the money is good. However, today, that changed. I admit,
[17:57] Speaker 1: I'm not the most organized person. I have ADHD, and
[18:01] Speaker 1: at 33 years old, I'm still learning to function without
[18:03] Speaker 1: the medication I weaned off of at 26. My toolbox
[18:07] Speaker 1: is usually cluttered, but I keep all my tools in
[18:09] Speaker 1: my area or on top of my box. It's a
[18:12] Speaker 1: system that works for me. This morning, when I clocked
[18:15] Speaker 1: in and was about to unlock my box, the new
[18:17] Speaker 1: boss approached me and said, You will not be working
[18:20] Speaker 1: on cars today until your box is organized. I replied,
[18:24] Speaker 1: my box is organized in a way that works for me.
[18:27] Speaker 1: He shot back, not good enough for me or the company.
[18:30] Speaker 1: I need to be able to find tools when I
[18:32] Speaker 1: need them and it needs to look neat and orderly
[18:34] Speaker 1: for when corporate comes through. I paused and said, so
[18:38] Speaker 1: you're telling me you need to find my tools that
[18:41] Speaker 1: I have purchased when you need to use them? I
[18:43] Speaker 1: don't remember signing that agreement. He nodded and muttered something
[18:47] Speaker 1: about insubordination and that he would be passing off all
[18:50] Speaker 1: the work to the other technician until it was completed
[18:52] Speaker 1: to his satisfaction. I assumed he was bluffing until three
[18:56] Speaker 1: cars came in and all three tickets were handed to
[18:59] Speaker 1: the other tech. I don't mind being told to clean
[19:01] Speaker 1: up and would have done it his way, but his
[19:03] Speaker 1: tone and the impact on my paycheck were issues. So
[19:06] Speaker 1: while he was in the back doing tire inventory, I
[19:09] Speaker 1: opened the top drawer of my toolbox, spread my arms,
[19:12] Speaker 1: and swept everything into the drawer. I repeated this process
[19:15] Speaker 1: for the second and third drawers until the top was clean.
[19:19] Speaker 1: I did the same for both of my smaller carts
[19:21] Speaker 1: until each one could be closed and locked. Then I
[19:24] Speaker 1: clocked out for lunch. I'm currently sitting in my car
[19:27] Speaker 1: in the parking lot eating lunch and browsing job listings
[19:29] Speaker 1: while watching him try to open all of my drawers
[19:32] Speaker 1: to use my tools. Three more cars came in and
[19:35] Speaker 1: the other techs can't handle six at a time. UPDATE
[19:38] Speaker 1: I clocked back in from lunch and the boss asked
[19:40] Speaker 1: to speak with me. Apparently, he called the district manager
[19:44] Speaker 1: and his dad, who is a district manager in another district,
[19:47] Speaker 1: for advice and it sounds like they both told him
[19:49] Speaker 1: to make it right. and that he could not afford
[19:51] Speaker 1: to lose me. I know how it sounds, but it's true.
[19:54] Speaker 1: He told me that he just wanted to make a
[19:56] Speaker 1: good impression on corporate who would be coming through in
[19:58] Speaker 1: a few weeks and that he shouldn't have targeted me personally.
[20:01] Speaker 1: He paid me for the three vehicles he worked on
[20:04] Speaker 1: and I let him know that I'm willing to work
[20:05] Speaker 1: with him, but if he ever spoke down to me again,
[20:08] Speaker 1: there would not be a do-over. I would leave. He
[20:10] Speaker 1: also inquired about buying his own tools. He's not a
[20:13] Speaker 1: bad guy, just a little anxious, I guess. I suppose
[20:16] Speaker 1: I will stick around for a while, as the paychecks
[20:18] Speaker 1: are worth it, the drive is convenient, and I have
[20:21] Speaker 1: a wife and a house to pay for. Regarding some
[20:23] Speaker 1: of the responses... Yes, I am somewhat of a slob
[20:26] Speaker 1: with my toolbox, but I average 10 to 15 cars
[20:29] Speaker 1: a day, so I don't always have time or motivation
[20:32] Speaker 1: to neatly organize my tools every day. He said he
[20:34] Speaker 1: will be bringing his toolbox from home and will call
[20:37] Speaker 1: or text to ask before borrowing my tools. Also, the
[20:40] Speaker 1: empty toolbox comments, I own all four of my toolboxes,
[20:44] Speaker 1: so they would be coming with me if I left.
[20:46] Speaker 1: Thanks for the support. It seems like malicious compliance paid
[20:49] Speaker 1: off for once. I've been telling my parents for years
[20:53] Speaker 1: that my sister is very entitled and they've ignored it
[20:55] Speaker 1: until now. My sister, who's 15, has always been selfish
[21:00] Speaker 1: ever since she was a kid. She would never share,
[21:02] Speaker 1: never do anything for someone else, but would expect everyone
[21:05] Speaker 1: to do everything for her. Obviously, as a kid, that
[21:08] Speaker 1: was understandable, but she's never grown out of it. My
[21:11] Speaker 1: parents have always dismissed this as just her personality. My
[21:15] Speaker 1: sister has always been rude to me specifically. She demands
[21:18] Speaker 1: that I do things for her, make her food, pay
[21:20] Speaker 1: for her things, and do this, that, and the other.
[21:23] Speaker 1: But if I ask for the same, she shouts at me.
[21:25] Speaker 1: I don't remember the last time she's done anything for
[21:28] Speaker 1: anyone out of the kindness of her heart. She just shouts.
[21:31] Speaker 1: There have been times when I've been ill and bedridden
[21:33] Speaker 1: due to a chronic illness and I asked her if
[21:35] Speaker 1: she could get me water and she shouted at me.
[21:38] Speaker 1: Even though I make her food and drinks multiple times
[21:40] Speaker 1: a day because if I don't, she just won't eat.
[21:44] Speaker 1: She's also rude about everything. Anytime someone talks to her,
[21:47] Speaker 1: she has a tone or shouts. She's so difficult to
[21:50] Speaker 1: have a conversation with. I say nice things and she's
[21:53] Speaker 1: just rude to me, screams and is awful. My parents
[21:56] Speaker 1: say nothing and if I dare talk half as badly
[21:59] Speaker 1: as she does, I get told off. I've mentioned countless
[22:02] Speaker 1: times the favoritism and how they see her as a
[22:04] Speaker 1: perfect little angel, coddling her, rarely telling her off and
[22:08] Speaker 1: never giving her any discipline, yet they always do with me.
[22:11] Speaker 1: They've acted like I was crazy. She's so manipulative. She
[22:15] Speaker 1: always plays the victim and turns my parents against me
[22:18] Speaker 1: when she's in the wrong. I told my parents that
[22:20] Speaker 1: one day, people are going to have enough of her
[22:22] Speaker 1: in the real world and I'm going to have to
[22:24] Speaker 1: cut contact if her behavior continues. But again, they didn't
[22:27] Speaker 1: want to listen. They just thought it was sisterly love
[22:30] Speaker 1: and normal sister behavior, not concerning behavior. Until this week,
[22:35] Speaker 1: when I went on a family reunion and my cousins,
[22:37] Speaker 1: who are 23 and 12, humbled her. She was doing
[22:41] Speaker 1: her normal toxic behavior, talking to them rudely and rolling
[22:44] Speaker 1: her eyes at them as she does everyone. My 23-year-old
[22:47] Speaker 1: cousin wasn't having it. He said, Listen, if you keep
[22:51] Speaker 1: acting like this in the real world, someone's going to
[22:53] Speaker 1: get you, and that she needs to cut her attitude.
[22:57] Speaker 1: My sister rudely responded with, Yeah, sure, okay, as if
[23:01] Speaker 1: he was stupid. My 12-year-old cousin added that he always
[23:04] Speaker 1: feels like she judges him because she always glares at him. Obviously,
[23:08] Speaker 1: my parents couldn't deny this, and it was actually a
[23:10] Speaker 1: really big wake-up call. They realized her behavior isn't just
[23:14] Speaker 1: towards immediate family and isn't just normal to outsiders. She
[23:17] Speaker 1: would do this same behavior to people she isn't as
[23:19] Speaker 1: close with, not just her parents and sister. Now my
[23:23] Speaker 1: parents are telling me that I can't get her food
[23:25] Speaker 1: and water and that she needs to do some things
[23:27] Speaker 1: for herself. They're forcing her to be independent and have
[23:30] Speaker 1: been actually disciplining her when she's toxic. She's not taking
[23:33] Speaker 1: it well. She's been screaming at me even though it's
[23:35] Speaker 1: not my fault and I haven't done anything. It's a
[23:38] Speaker 1: bit late, but I'm glad that they're finally putting their
[23:40] Speaker 1: foot down and no longer looking at her as a
[23:42] Speaker 1: perfect little angel who can do no wrong. I just
[23:45] Speaker 1: hope they actually stick to it. It doesn't matter if
[23:48] Speaker 1: they stick to it. You stick to it. If she
[23:51] Speaker 1: decides to be bratty to you, just tell her that
[23:53] Speaker 1: she's old enough to handle it herself. Tell her she
[23:56] Speaker 1: did it to herself and although she doesn't realize it,
[23:58] Speaker 1: this is the wake-up call that she needs because no
[24:01] Speaker 1: one likes a jerk. Good luck. My parents are demanding
[24:06] Speaker 1: money for their dream house. My parents are trying to
[24:09] Speaker 1: build a house in their hometown. They own several properties
[24:12] Speaker 1: but they refuse to sell any of them to fund
[24:14] Speaker 1: the construction. Instead, they expect my siblings and I to
[24:18] Speaker 1: financially contribute because, in their words, the assets will eventually
[24:22] Speaker 1: be ours through inheritance. For context, I've been happily married
[24:26] Speaker 1: for two years, and my wife and I have a
[24:28] Speaker 1: good income, significantly more than my parents. Our combined income
[24:32] Speaker 1: is probably four to five times what they make. My
[24:35] Speaker 1: parents don't have much in liquid cash. They have assets instead,
[24:38] Speaker 1: but they're unwilling to sell any of them. So they've
[24:41] Speaker 1: turned to the family for loans. We've lent them money before,
[24:45] Speaker 1: and now they're asking for more. Here's the thing. They
[24:48] Speaker 1: already have a lot of debt, and I know that
[24:50] Speaker 1: those who can lend to them are reaching their limits.
[24:52] Speaker 1: I feel conflicted about giving them more money. On one hand,
[24:55] Speaker 1: I want to help them complete their dream home and
[24:57] Speaker 1: see them happy. On the other hand, I doubt they'll
[25:00] Speaker 1: be able to pay us back anytime soon since their
[25:02] Speaker 1: income is so limited. They're retired now. My wife is
[25:06] Speaker 1: strictly against giving them any more money. She believes that
[25:09] Speaker 1: this situation is entirely of their choice and that by
[25:12] Speaker 1: helping them financially, we're just enabling their refusal to sell
[25:15] Speaker 1: one of their properties. She thinks we shouldn't have to
[25:17] Speaker 1: bear the burden of their decisions. So, am I the
[25:20] Speaker 1: jerk for refusing to lend them more money, even if
[25:23] Speaker 1: it means they might not be able to finish their
[25:25] Speaker 1: dream home? Not the jerk, but if you have the
[25:28] Speaker 1: money available and your parents want you to have the
[25:30] Speaker 1: other property anyway, why not buy one of their properties
[25:33] Speaker 1: off them at a reasonable price? They can then build
[25:36] Speaker 1: their home and you get an actual asset instead of
[25:38] Speaker 1: an IOU. OP. I've already offered this solution to them,
[25:43] Speaker 1: but since it still means selling something, they refused. Karen
[25:48] Speaker 1: humiliates me in front of our friends by rejecting me
[25:50] Speaker 1: for being under 5'10 and still expects me to help
[25:53] Speaker 1: her out financially. Important background. I, 19 male, was friends
[25:58] Speaker 1: with Lisa, 19 female, and we had a few other
[26:00] Speaker 1: people in our friend group. I met these people in
[26:03] Speaker 1: my freshman year and I wouldn't consider them super close friends,
[26:06] Speaker 1: but we all hung out at least once a week
[26:08] Speaker 1: while we were in school. I began to develop feelings
[26:11] Speaker 1: for Lisa and decided to ask her out over text
[26:13] Speaker 1: around May of 2023. I asked her if she wanted
[26:16] Speaker 1: to get dinner with me and she responded, just the
[26:19] Speaker 1: two of us? I said yes and she left me
[26:22] Speaker 1: on read. I was hoping for at least a yes
[26:24] Speaker 1: or a no and I was nervous that things would
[26:26] Speaker 1: be awkward the next time we all hung out together. Well,
[26:29] Speaker 1: the next time we all hung out was at the
[26:31] Speaker 1: library doing a group study for a class we were
[26:33] Speaker 1: all in. She came a bit late and as soon
[26:36] Speaker 1: as she sat down she turned to me and said, OP,
[26:39] Speaker 1: I would go on a date with you but you're
[26:41] Speaker 1: too short for me. Honestly, guys under 5'10 shouldn't even exist. Ouch.
[26:47] Speaker 1: I would just see you as my little brother or
[26:48] Speaker 1: a friend. She started laughing and so did the other girls.
[26:52] Speaker 1: My guy friends were just quiet and they sat there awkwardly.
[26:55] Speaker 1: I was a little disappointed they didn't defend me but
[26:58] Speaker 1: oh well. For reference, I'm 5'7 and she's 5'3. I
[27:02] Speaker 1: was embarrassed and I said, you could have said that
[27:04] Speaker 1: in private. I ended up leaving early and limited my
[27:07] Speaker 1: hangouts with that group. In the few times I did
[27:10] Speaker 1: hang out with them, Lisa acted like there was nothing
[27:12] Speaker 1: going on between us. Fast forward to August, Lisa texted
[27:16] Speaker 1: the group chat asking if anyone would be able to
[27:18] Speaker 1: lend her $ 750 for her housing deposit. She was frantic
[27:22] Speaker 1: and explained that her parents were kicking her out for
[27:24] Speaker 1: personal problems and she needed to put down her housing
[27:27] Speaker 1: deposit otherwise her on-campus housing contract would be terminated and
[27:31] Speaker 1: she wouldn't have a place to stay. Everyone in the
[27:34] Speaker 1: group chat said they couldn't help her and they wished
[27:36] Speaker 1: that they could. That's when Lisa decided to privately message me.
[27:40] Speaker 1: It's no secret that my family is well off and
[27:42] Speaker 1: we don't have any struggles. This came up when we
[27:45] Speaker 1: were talking about financial aid and how much we were getting, etc.
[27:48] Speaker 1: She asked me if she could borrow $ 750 from me
[27:51] Speaker 1: and that she would pay me back as soon as possible.
[27:54] Speaker 1: I was furious and told her no, questioning how she
[27:56] Speaker 1: could ask me after she embarrassed me in front of
[27:59] Speaker 1: everyone back in May. That's when she said she was
[28:01] Speaker 1: getting kicked out because she likes women and that's why
[28:04] Speaker 1: she rejected me the way she did. She didn't want
[28:06] Speaker 1: her friends knowing that either. She was basically begging me
[28:09] Speaker 1: as she wouldn't have a place to stay if she
[28:11] Speaker 1: didn't pay her housing deposit. I told her that it
[28:13] Speaker 1: wasn't my problem and I promptly blocked her. This led
[28:16] Speaker 1: to me getting a flurry of messages from my friends
[28:19] Speaker 1: in the group who accused me of having no heart
[28:21] Speaker 1: and to grow up and deal with rejection. I blocked
[28:24] Speaker 1: all of them. Am I the jerk? Not the jerk.
[28:28] Speaker 1: If your friends are so worried about Lisa's ability to
[28:31] Speaker 1: pay her housing deposit, then they should pay it. If
[28:34] Speaker 1: you feel like being petty, you could always say that
[28:36] Speaker 1: you're a little short this month and you can't help.
[28:40] Speaker 1: Not the jerk. She didn't want to be humiliated so
[28:42] Speaker 1: she decided to humiliate you? She could have rejected you
[28:45] Speaker 1: in private and explained why and no one would have known.
[28:48] Speaker 1: That way you'd have kept a good relationship and possibly
[28:51] Speaker 1: would have been willing to lend her the money. But
[28:53] Speaker 1: she didn't. She decided to distract from her by making
[28:56] Speaker 1: you the center of ridicule. Made her bed, now she
[28:59] Speaker 1: gets to lie in it. Am I the jerk for
[29:02] Speaker 1: not helping my wife with the baby after she stayed
[29:04] Speaker 1: out partying all night? I, 30 male, and my wife,
[29:08] Speaker 1: 29 female, have been married for 4 years now. We
[29:11] Speaker 1: have a two-month-old daughter. My wife is a stay-at-home mom
[29:14] Speaker 1: and I work as a software engineer. I work remotely
[29:17] Speaker 1: so it hasn't been that awful to split responsibilities. We
[29:20] Speaker 1: decided that we would be taking turns this weekend to
[29:22] Speaker 1: take time for ourselves. Yesterday, my wife went out with
[29:25] Speaker 1: her friends for a girl's day out. She said she'd
[29:28] Speaker 1: be back by around 8pm and to not wait for
[29:30] Speaker 1: her to eat dinner together. At around 8.30pm, I called
[29:34] Speaker 1: her because she still hadn't come home. She told me
[29:36] Speaker 1: her friends were planning to have a sleepover as well
[29:39] Speaker 1: and she requested me to take care of our baby tonight.
[29:42] Speaker 1: Before I could reply she hung up on me. The
[29:44] Speaker 1: thing is, our daughter, Rose, is colic so she doesn't
[29:47] Speaker 1: sleep well. We usually take turns taking care of her
[29:50] Speaker 1: because she cries a lot and it's very hard for
[29:53] Speaker 1: one person to watch over her. I had to stay
[29:55] Speaker 1: up all night yesterday with Rose. My wife came home
[29:58] Speaker 1: at 4am and she was completely drunk. She just blacked
[30:01] Speaker 1: out on the bed immediately after getting home. At around
[30:05] Speaker 1: 8pm I got us fries, nuggets, burgers and drinks for
[30:08] Speaker 1: both of us. At around 9am my wife woke up
[30:11] Speaker 1: and said she felt very sick and asked me if
[30:13] Speaker 1: I could take care of Rose for a few more
[30:15] Speaker 1: hours so that she could eat breakfast and rest for
[30:17] Speaker 1: a bit. I was exhausted at that point because I
[30:20] Speaker 1: hadn't slept all night yesterday but I agreed. I was
[30:24] Speaker 1: really annoyed with her at that point though because today
[30:26] Speaker 1: was supposed to be a break for me and her
[30:28] Speaker 1: getting drunk wasn't part of the plan. We both had
[30:31] Speaker 1: breakfast and she went back to bed. I was scrolling
[30:34] Speaker 1: Insta while waiting for my wife to wake up. At
[30:37] Speaker 1: 1pm she hadn't woken up yet and I ended up
[30:39] Speaker 1: having to cancel my lunch plan with my friends. I
[30:41] Speaker 1: was beyond angry at that point but decided to wait
[30:44] Speaker 1: for her to wake up instead of waking her up.
[30:46] Speaker 1: She finally woke up at 3pm. I handed Rose to
[30:49] Speaker 1: my wife and told her I'm going to the basement
[30:51] Speaker 1: to watch a movie and take a nap. I also
[30:54] Speaker 1: asked her to not disturb me until I came out
[30:55] Speaker 1: on my own unless there was an emergency. I made
[30:58] Speaker 1: myself a few grilled cheese sandwiches and took the strawberry
[31:01] Speaker 1: shake with me to the basement. I set up an
[31:03] Speaker 1: air mattress and some pillows, then I locked the door.
[31:06] Speaker 1: Then I watched a few episodes of my favorite show,
[31:09] Speaker 1: ended up falling asleep midway through the show and woke
[31:11] Speaker 1: up around 7pm to 40 missed calls from my wife.
[31:15] Speaker 1: When I went up to check on her and the baby,
[31:17] Speaker 1: she said that I was very irresponsible and rude for
[31:19] Speaker 1: leaving her alone with a baby for so long. I
[31:22] Speaker 1: got mad and told her, at least I didn't get
[31:24] Speaker 1: blackout drunk and leave you to take care of a
[31:26] Speaker 1: colic baby for more than a day on your own
[31:29] Speaker 1: without any sleep. She started crying and told me I
[31:32] Speaker 1: was horrible for guilting her like that. Am I the jerk?
[31:36] Speaker 1: Your wife is so wrong. Really stunningly wrong. First for
[31:39] Speaker 1: staying out until 4. Second for drinking so hard she
[31:43] Speaker 1: was still feeling bad at 1 p.m. And then for
[31:45] Speaker 1: having the audacity to yell at you for taking a
[31:47] Speaker 1: four-hour nap. Not the jerk. And hang in there. Not
[31:52] Speaker 1: the jerk. I don't get all the people judging OP.
[31:55] Speaker 1: They both needed the day off. They had a deal.
[31:57] Speaker 1: She broke the deal. He was very nice to her
[32:00] Speaker 1: and gave her more free hours from his own time.
[32:02] Speaker 1: And yet she can't deal with her own baby for
[32:04] Speaker 1: an afternoon? I get babies are exhausting. It comes with
[32:07] Speaker 1: the territory. Mom is a stay-at-home mom. She needs a break.
[32:11] Speaker 1: But OP is exhausted too. He was taking care of
[32:13] Speaker 1: his baby, who doesn't sleep well, for more than 24
[32:16] Speaker 1: hours all alone. The mom needs a reality check. She
[32:20] Speaker 1: was the one who chose to get drunk when she
[32:21] Speaker 1: knew full well that the next day she needed to
[32:23] Speaker 1: take care of the baby. Do this next. Tap here
