[0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome to r slash am I the jerk, where OP's
[0:02] Speaker 1: ex-girlfriend is opening new accounts in his name. My ex-girlfriend
[0:07] Speaker 1: opened electric and internet accounts in my name without my
[0:10] Speaker 1: knowledge a year after we broke up. Now the accounts
[0:13] Speaker 1: have gone to collections and my credit score has dropped
[0:15] Speaker 1: by 300 points. She told me to grow up and
[0:18] Speaker 1: pay them off for her. I'm sort of lost on
[0:21] Speaker 1: what to do here. She ran up a little under $ 2, 000
[0:24] Speaker 1: in electric and internet charges. From what I can tell,
[0:27] Speaker 1: she opened the accounts using my name and social security
[0:29] Speaker 1: number about a year after we broke up. I hadn't
[0:32] Speaker 1: spoken with her that entire year and she had never
[0:34] Speaker 1: had permission to do this. I only found out about
[0:37] Speaker 1: the accounts because I went to buy a car a
[0:39] Speaker 1: few weeks ago and the finance department of the dealership
[0:42] Speaker 1: showed me a copy of my credit report. The interest
[0:44] Speaker 1: rate I was going to get was terrible, so I
[0:46] Speaker 1: held off. They told me my rate would drop significantly
[0:50] Speaker 1: once I got the accounts off my credit report. I
[0:52] Speaker 1: ended up challenging both accounts with all of the credit
[0:54] Speaker 1: bureaus but none of them took it off, all saying
[0:57] Speaker 1: that they need more information. I left my ex several
[1:00] Speaker 1: voicemails telling her that she needed to contact the companies
[1:03] Speaker 1: and confirm that she opened the accounts. She finally left
[1:06] Speaker 1: me a voicemail telling me to grow up and just
[1:08] Speaker 1: pay the accounts off because when we broke up she
[1:11] Speaker 1: had to leave my house. I finally got to talk
[1:13] Speaker 1: with her on the phone and said that it wasn't
[1:15] Speaker 1: my problem and she just said, looks like it is
[1:18] Speaker 1: your problem and she hung up. I haven't talked with
[1:21] Speaker 1: her since then. Kind of stuck on what to do now.
[1:24] Speaker 1: She has no intention of taking responsibility for the bills.
[1:28] Speaker 1: File a police report first, then take a copy of
[1:31] Speaker 1: any leases, utilities, or other proof of residence to the
[1:34] Speaker 1: electric and utility companies to show them that you didn't
[1:36] Speaker 1: live at that address. Send that same info along with
[1:39] Speaker 1: the police report to the credit bureaus with an explanation
[1:42] Speaker 1: of the issue and lock your credit. OP, this sounds
[1:46] Speaker 1: like it could work. If I give them the police report,
[1:48] Speaker 1: it would at least show I'm not just saying it
[1:50] Speaker 1: was her to get out of paying. Update, two and
[1:53] Speaker 1: a half months later. So I took the advice of
[1:55] Speaker 1: several of you from my last thread and I went
[1:57] Speaker 1: to the police. I made the report and they were
[1:59] Speaker 1: pretty helpful, telling me exactly what I needed to say
[2:02] Speaker 1: to the credit bureaus to get the accounts off my
[2:04] Speaker 1: credit report. It worked perfectly. Both of the accounts came
[2:07] Speaker 1: off of my report and my score shot back up.
[2:10] Speaker 1: I went ahead and got my new car at the
[2:12] Speaker 1: end of June, which was awesome since I really needed it.
[2:15] Speaker 1: My ex is crazy and so is her family. I
[2:17] Speaker 1: got a phone call from the same police department Saturday
[2:20] Speaker 1: night when I was out of town. Multiple people had
[2:22] Speaker 1: broken out every window of my new car and almost
[2:25] Speaker 1: every window of my house. My neighbor saw what happened
[2:28] Speaker 1: and he called 911. The police arrived and ended up
[2:31] Speaker 1: catching one of the two breaking windows. The other one
[2:34] Speaker 1: jumped into his car, which just so happened to be
[2:36] Speaker 1: the exact same make, model, and color of my ex's vehicle,
[2:40] Speaker 1: then sped away. They tried to pull it over, but
[2:42] Speaker 1: it took off and they stopped chasing after a couple
[2:44] Speaker 1: of blocks. According to the police, there was a piece
[2:47] Speaker 1: of paper in the window, probably a fake temporary tag.
[2:51] Speaker 1: The guy who was arrested is a friend of my
[2:52] Speaker 1: ex's brother. I got to see the neighbor's surveillance footage
[2:55] Speaker 1: and two people got out, go up to my car,
[2:58] Speaker 1: and start breaking the windows. It's not good enough quality
[3:01] Speaker 1: to make an ID based on their faces, but their
[3:03] Speaker 1: clothes matched the one they caught, who also had a
[3:05] Speaker 1: torch lighter with them. They were literally busting out every
[3:08] Speaker 1: individual block window from my basement windows, which is probably
[3:12] Speaker 1: why they got caught. They were there for about 3
[3:14] Speaker 1: minutes before the police showed up. I was told my
[3:17] Speaker 1: ex refused to speak with them and her car, which
[3:19] Speaker 1: was in the driveway, had her normal plates on it.
[3:22] Speaker 1: I'm sure she put them back on after she was done.
[3:25] Speaker 1: I said I wanted the guy they arrested prosecuted. He
[3:28] Speaker 1: was released after about an hour and has a court
[3:30] Speaker 1: date in a couple of weeks. I'm literally scared for
[3:33] Speaker 1: my life right now. I have a company that came
[3:35] Speaker 1: by and boarded up my house's windows. Insurance is supposed
[3:38] Speaker 1: to be coming out today but I'm staying at a
[3:40] Speaker 1: friend's house for the rest of the week. I'm most
[3:42] Speaker 1: likely going to sell my house. It's literally not worth
[3:45] Speaker 1: it to me anymore. My bet is that the police
[3:47] Speaker 1: questioned her about the accounts and she decided to get revenge.
[3:50] Speaker 1: My work is remote anyway. I've been thinking about moving
[3:53] Speaker 1: for a bit, but a state or two away, especially
[3:56] Speaker 1: if I rent for a year, I should be good.
[3:58] Speaker 1: So yeah, there's definitely bad with the good in my case.
[4:01] Speaker 1: I wish I had caught it sooner, but it never
[4:03] Speaker 1: crossed my mind to check my credit every so often.
[4:06] Speaker 1: Even with insurance, I'm going to be out more than $ 2, 000
[4:09] Speaker 1: due to the damage that they caused. And the guy
[4:11] Speaker 1: they did catch looks to be even in worse financial
[4:14] Speaker 1: shape than my ex. My wife wants to become a
[4:18] Speaker 1: full-time housewife after years of studying to become a doctor,
[4:21] Speaker 1: but I'm totally against it. I, 32 female, have been
[4:25] Speaker 1: with my wife, who's 31, since our second year of
[4:27] Speaker 1: high school. From what I remember, she has always wanted
[4:30] Speaker 1: to become a doctor, a pediatric doctor to be exact.
[4:33] Speaker 1: While I kept changing my mind and was continuously unsure
[4:36] Speaker 1: about what I wanted, my wife was extremely dedicated on
[4:39] Speaker 1: becoming a pediatric doctor. I've seen her study her butt
[4:42] Speaker 1: off in college and cry from frustration as she studied.
[4:45] Speaker 1: Seeing her work so hard gave me the motivation to
[4:47] Speaker 1: finish school and become a lawyer. We've been each other's
[4:50] Speaker 1: biggest supporters throughout this journey. From working odd jobs to
[4:53] Speaker 1: support ourselves, having cheap dates at the park, and crying
[4:56] Speaker 1: from stress and frustration, it was like finally seeing the
[4:59] Speaker 1: end of the tunnel with my partner next to me
[5:01] Speaker 1: the whole time. We got married right after I graduated
[5:04] Speaker 1: from law school and started living in a bigger place
[5:06] Speaker 1: with the money we had saved together. She finished her
[5:09] Speaker 1: internship this year and is about to legally become a
[5:11] Speaker 1: licensed doctor. However, her happy tune about becoming a doctor
[5:15] Speaker 1: suddenly changed. I'm not really sure when her obsession with
[5:18] Speaker 1: becoming a housewife started, but seeing her go from being
[5:20] Speaker 1: a career-oriented woman with hopes and dreams to wanting to
[5:23] Speaker 1: become a housewife gave me severe whiplash. I just couldn't
[5:27] Speaker 1: understand what could make her change her mind so suddenly.
[5:30] Speaker 1: I tried asking about it and she said something along
[5:32] Speaker 1: the lines of,' I just wanna cook and clean for you.'
[5:34] Speaker 1: Live a simple life.' I assumed that maybe she was
[5:38] Speaker 1: feeling lonely since I've been working a lot. So I
[5:40] Speaker 1: told her that we'd go on more dates and spend
[5:42] Speaker 1: more time together. But again, she insisted that she wanted
[5:45] Speaker 1: to become a housewife. Don't get me wrong. I don't
[5:47] Speaker 1: think there's anything wrong with that. But to give up
[5:49] Speaker 1: your long years of studying and hard work to stay
[5:52] Speaker 1: home and cook is absurd. We're already splitting the chores
[5:55] Speaker 1: at home and we've just been on a very equal
[5:57] Speaker 1: footing since forever. I just can't seem to read her.
[6:00] Speaker 1: Maybe being a doctor just isn't for her. Or perhaps
[6:03] Speaker 1: she got bored. I just don't get it. I want
[6:06] Speaker 1: her to do what makes her happy because I truly
[6:08] Speaker 1: love her and she's my entire world. But is stopping
[6:10] Speaker 1: everything and throwing away the chance of having one of
[6:13] Speaker 1: the most respectable jobs on earth just to stay home
[6:15] Speaker 1: and do chores really worth it? Maybe I'm asking the
[6:18] Speaker 1: wrong questions. Maybe she's trying to tell me something and
[6:20] Speaker 1: I'm just being dense. I wish I could read her mind.
[6:23] Speaker 1: I just don't get it. At the end of the day,
[6:25] Speaker 1: I just want to know why and maybe convince her otherwise.
[6:29] Speaker 1: As much as I think that's a bad idea, it's
[6:31] Speaker 1: still her life. But I don't think I'll ever be
[6:33] Speaker 1: able to forgive myself if I let her throw her
[6:35] Speaker 1: career away. I worry about the lack of communication between
[6:39] Speaker 1: you two. She's expressing a desire but not saying why.
[6:42] Speaker 1: You want to guess the reason but don't want to
[6:44] Speaker 1: ask her for more reason. You also want to talk
[6:47] Speaker 1: her out of it without even knowing her reasoning. Are
[6:49] Speaker 1: you totally against it no matter what or just totally
[6:52] Speaker 1: against it because you're making a huge assumption about her? OP.
[6:56] Speaker 1: I must admit, my initial reaction wasn't great. I had
[6:59] Speaker 1: given her all the reasons as to why it's not
[7:01] Speaker 1: a good idea to throw her hard work all away
[7:03] Speaker 1: and assume the possible reasonings of my own. Thank you
[7:06] Speaker 1: for pointing that out to me. I haven't even noticed
[7:08] Speaker 1: this myself. In the moment, I only thought about what
[7:11] Speaker 1: I personally thought would be good for my wife rather
[7:13] Speaker 1: than what she thinks is good for her. Again, thank
[7:16] Speaker 1: you for your honesty. Update six months later. Things are
[7:20] Speaker 1: better now. She's working to finish her residency. I'm so
[7:23] Speaker 1: incredibly proud of her for pushing through even with all
[7:26] Speaker 1: the odds against her. She's incredibly hardworking and I'll always
[7:29] Speaker 1: be there for her. Through the past few months, I
[7:31] Speaker 1: had to revisit a lot of areas within our relationship.
[7:34] Speaker 1: For one, the status of our relationship was worse than
[7:37] Speaker 1: I imagined. There were major life events for her that
[7:39] Speaker 1: I wouldn't even have known about if I hadn't broken
[7:42] Speaker 1: the growing wall between us. My wife was always a
[7:45] Speaker 1: hard worker and because simple encouragement always seemed to be
[7:48] Speaker 1: enough to boost her morale, I assumed that this was
[7:50] Speaker 1: still the case. I was wrong. My wife needed a friend,
[7:54] Speaker 1: a shoulder to lean on, a confidant and a lover.
[7:56] Speaker 1: but during her very difficult year, I was none of
[7:59] Speaker 1: those things. As her wife, I failed to give her
[8:01] Speaker 1: the proper love and support she desperately needed and deserved.
[8:05] Speaker 1: Not only was she burnt out, but because I unintentionally
[8:07] Speaker 1: put work before her, I wounded her deeply. Our intimacy
[8:11] Speaker 1: was practically non-existent, our conversations never went beyond surface-level subjects,
[8:15] Speaker 1: and sometimes, the only time we'd see each other was
[8:18] Speaker 1: when one of us was already long asleep. Whenever I
[8:20] Speaker 1: would ask her if she was okay, she always told
[8:22] Speaker 1: me she was fine, which I doubted. but since I
[8:25] Speaker 1: didn't want to push her, I stopped asking. That's where
[8:27] Speaker 1: I made my mistake. Asking wasn't enough. I was foolish.
[8:31] Speaker 1: We barely saw each other, did anything together, shared words
[8:34] Speaker 1: of endearment, or basked in each other's presence. Intimacy just
[8:37] Speaker 1: seemed so foreign between us. Like a fool, I thought, hey,
[8:41] Speaker 1: I asked if she was okay and she said she
[8:43] Speaker 1: was fine. My job here is done. I never once
[8:46] Speaker 1: tried to give her the reassurance that I was someone
[8:48] Speaker 1: she could depend on, that I was ready to sit
[8:50] Speaker 1: and listen, that she could complain to me about the
[8:52] Speaker 1: same thing over and over and I'd still listen with
[8:54] Speaker 1: just as much attention. During a time of great stress,
[8:57] Speaker 1: I was everything but helpful. We revisited this conversation a
[9:01] Speaker 1: lot and every time I listened. Eventually, she gained a
[9:04] Speaker 1: lot more confidence. She relied on her supervisor as well
[9:07] Speaker 1: who's been in the field way before either of us
[9:09] Speaker 1: were even born. Seeing her get better day by day
[9:12] Speaker 1: made me so incredibly happy. We're at such a great
[9:14] Speaker 1: place in our relationship now. I'm very happy with how
[9:17] Speaker 1: things are going. We're still busy, but we always find
[9:20] Speaker 1: time for each other. We also recently adopted two cats.
[9:24] Speaker 1: I know a lot of people suggested that perhaps my
[9:26] Speaker 1: wife was getting baby fever, but I assure you, our
[9:29] Speaker 1: kittens definitely taught us that kids probably aren't meant for us.
[9:32] Speaker 1: Not anytime soon anyway. My boyfriend went to a festival
[9:36] Speaker 1: without me and I can't move past it. I want
[9:39] Speaker 1: to end our six-year relationship. We've spoken throughout our relationship
[9:43] Speaker 1: about wanting to go to this one together as neither
[9:46] Speaker 1: of us had ever been to that particular festival and
[9:48] Speaker 1: would love to experience it together. But then he only
[9:51] Speaker 1: arranged a ticket for himself behind my back and went
[9:53] Speaker 1: without me. The ticket purchasing was done through a girl
[9:56] Speaker 1: that I'd never met. And this particular festival requires you
[9:59] Speaker 1: to sign up up, exchange registration details and all of
[10:02] Speaker 1: that jazz. So it was pre-planned months in advance that
[10:05] Speaker 1: she would try and get him a ticket and he
[10:07] Speaker 1: would try for her. But at no point did he
[10:09] Speaker 1: also give her my registration details which he's had for
[10:12] Speaker 1: our entire relationship or discuss this with me at all.
[10:16] Speaker 1: He then proceeded to hide this from me not mentioning
[10:18] Speaker 1: that he had other people trying to get a ticket
[10:20] Speaker 1: for him. And when the purchaser was successful, getting tickets
[10:23] Speaker 1: for this particular UK festival is like winning a lottery,
[10:26] Speaker 1: he then failed to mention that someone else had bought
[10:28] Speaker 1: him his ticket and had me believe that he panicked
[10:31] Speaker 1: at the sales page and he was only able to
[10:33] Speaker 1: get one ticket. I was trying to buy tickets at
[10:35] Speaker 1: the same time but I couldn't even load the page
[10:37] Speaker 1: due to the volume of people trying for tickets. Over
[10:40] Speaker 1: the next 10 or so months, and particularly the week
[10:43] Speaker 1: before the festival, I was very upset about it, and
[10:45] Speaker 1: the closer we got to the festival, the more upset
[10:47] Speaker 1: I became. A few days before the festival, I made
[10:50] Speaker 1: him aware of how badly the whole situation has hurt
[10:53] Speaker 1: my feelings, and he then came clean about how he
[10:55] Speaker 1: secured his ticket, which made me feel even worse, as
[10:58] Speaker 1: it meant that he had essentially lied to me for
[11:00] Speaker 1: months about it, instead of just being honest with me.
[11:02] Speaker 1: I was gobsmacked. Whilst he was at the festival, I
[11:06] Speaker 1: received flowers and a postcard saying how bad he feels,
[11:09] Speaker 1: and he has apologized since coming back, and apparently it's
[11:12] Speaker 1: all good now. Since his return from the festival, I
[11:15] Speaker 1: have also found out that the two girls he went
[11:17] Speaker 1: to the festival with slept in my tent with him
[11:20] Speaker 1: in their own pods for the whole weekend, and despite
[11:22] Speaker 1: multiple discussions and conversations via phone and text through the
[11:25] Speaker 1: time he was there, he failed to mention this to me,
[11:28] Speaker 1: and I think that's super shady, but now he's upset
[11:30] Speaker 1: that I don't trust him. I feel so unbelievably angry, hurt,
[11:34] Speaker 1: and just incredibly upset and he's acting like everything's okay
[11:38] Speaker 1: and fine, and I'm finding myself incapable of even sleeping
[11:41] Speaker 1: in the same bed as him. This is not the
[11:43] Speaker 1: first time he's done something like this in our relationship,
[11:45] Speaker 1: and I'm seriously considering calling it quits over this as
[11:48] Speaker 1: I can't seem to get past the bitterness and resentment
[11:50] Speaker 1: that I'm currently feeling. I find myself constantly snapping at him,
[11:54] Speaker 1: not wanting to talk to him, and pretty much just
[11:56] Speaker 1: avoiding him altogether. I've slept in the spare room since
[11:59] Speaker 1: he got back, and I'm seriously considering ending the relationship
[12:02] Speaker 1: over this. I don't mind him going to things without
[12:04] Speaker 1: me and we both regularly meet friends or attend nights
[12:07] Speaker 1: out without each other's presence as we believe and encourage
[12:10] Speaker 1: that having our own lives and interests is healthy. However,
[12:14] Speaker 1: the particular festival I'm talking about has been on my
[12:16] Speaker 1: bucket list forever and for the entire six years of
[12:19] Speaker 1: our relationship, we've talked about experiencing it together. So I
[12:22] Speaker 1: think I'm pretty justified in being hurt by all of this.
[12:25] Speaker 1: Hurt doesn't even begin to cover it to be honest.
[12:28] Speaker 1: We're attending a wedding in France in a week's time
[12:30] Speaker 1: And I think once we're home, I need to deal
[12:32] Speaker 1: with this, whatever that entails. I can't continue to live
[12:35] Speaker 1: like this. Basically, I've been made to feel that this
[12:37] Speaker 1: isn't really that big of a deal and I'm being silly.
[12:40] Speaker 1: So I thought I'd ask the Reddit hive mind for
[12:42] Speaker 1: some advice and opinions. So Reddit, how do I move
[12:45] Speaker 1: past this? Do I want to? If my boyfriend did
[12:49] Speaker 1: this behind my back, despite knowing how much I wanted
[12:52] Speaker 1: to go, then went without me with some girls, this
[12:55] Speaker 1: would be the end of it. There is no coming
[12:57] Speaker 1: back from it. So he didn't go alone. He went
[13:00] Speaker 1: with other girls who he shared a tent with and
[13:03] Speaker 1: he hid and lied to you about it repeatedly for months.
[13:06] Speaker 1: The disrespect and shadiness is off the charts. You deserve better.
[13:11] Speaker 1: Am I the jerk for telling my sister's boyfriend to
[13:13] Speaker 1: not propose to her? I, 28 female, have a fraternal
[13:17] Speaker 1: twin sister who's dating my fiance's younger brother. My fiance
[13:21] Speaker 1: and I are getting married in September. My sister has
[13:24] Speaker 1: made several comments about how awful my new last name
[13:27] Speaker 1: will be She has also said similar things throughout her relationship.
[13:30] Speaker 1: She told me that she could never marry her boyfriend
[13:33] Speaker 1: because she just can't have this last name. I told
[13:35] Speaker 1: her that she doesn't have to take his last name.
[13:37] Speaker 1: There are plenty of women who keep their maiden name
[13:39] Speaker 1: when they get married for various reasons. She disagrees and
[13:42] Speaker 1: said that she doesn't want to keep our maiden name.
[13:44] Speaker 1: She wants to have a traditional marriage where she takes
[13:46] Speaker 1: her husband's last name. Last weekend, she went with me
[13:49] Speaker 1: to buy clothes for my honeymoon. While we were out,
[13:52] Speaker 1: I asked her what if her boyfriend proposed to her.
[13:55] Speaker 1: They've been dating for three years now. and my fiance
[13:57] Speaker 1: told me that his brother was looking at engagement rings.
[14:00] Speaker 1: I didn't tell her this, but simply brought it up
[14:02] Speaker 1: in regular conversation since we were shopping for my honeymoon outfit,
[14:05] Speaker 1: and she kept saying, I can't wait to try on
[14:07] Speaker 1: wedding dresses one day, and the like. She told me
[14:11] Speaker 1: she would say, only if you change your last name.
[14:14] Speaker 1: I told her that was really selfish of her to
[14:16] Speaker 1: give an ultimatum like that to someone who loved her
[14:18] Speaker 1: and wanted to marry her. She rolled her eyes at me,
[14:21] Speaker 1: so I said, seriously, would you really turn him down
[14:24] Speaker 1: because of his last name? And she firmly said, yes,
[14:28] Speaker 1: I just can't have that name. So I asked her
[14:30] Speaker 1: why she was even with him knowing it won't lead
[14:32] Speaker 1: to marriage. And she replied, I don't know. I just
[14:36] Speaker 1: dropped it. Yesterday, her boyfriend came over to hang out
[14:39] Speaker 1: with my fiance and pulled up photos of rings to
[14:41] Speaker 1: ask my opinion on which my sister would like. I
[14:44] Speaker 1: told him the truth. She won't marry him. That she
[14:46] Speaker 1: will say no if he asks because of his last name.
[14:49] Speaker 1: He asked me if she told me this and I
[14:51] Speaker 1: told him yes. He broke up with her today. He
[14:54] Speaker 1: didn't tell her why but my sister knows it was
[14:56] Speaker 1: because of me. Now my aunt and uncle, who raised us,
[14:59] Speaker 1: are upset with me and said that it's going to
[15:01] Speaker 1: be really uncomfortable at my wedding for everyone. But wouldn't
[15:04] Speaker 1: it still have been if he asked her and she
[15:06] Speaker 1: said no? Should I have just let this play out?
[15:09] Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with everyone sucks here. Your sister's being
[15:12] Speaker 1: pretty petty about this and clearly she never talked to
[15:15] Speaker 1: him about it which means either she was lying to
[15:17] Speaker 1: you about this for some reason or she was leading
[15:19] Speaker 1: him on. On the other hand, it was absolutely not
[15:22] Speaker 1: your place to just flat out tell him not to
[15:24] Speaker 1: propose to her and then repeat something your sister had
[15:27] Speaker 1: told you like that. Whether this was petty or not
[15:29] Speaker 1: and she was leading him on or not, she said
[15:31] Speaker 1: that to you in confidence and you just popped out
[15:34] Speaker 1: with it the second he started showing you a ring.
[15:36] Speaker 1: The right thing to do would have been to tell
[15:38] Speaker 1: him that he should talk to her about this and
[15:40] Speaker 1: to see where her head is at in regards to
[15:42] Speaker 1: marriage rather than just straight up ambushing her with the
[15:44] Speaker 1: ring and then let her work the situation out for herself.
[15:47] Speaker 1: You made a decisive move to insert yourself into their
[15:50] Speaker 1: relationship and it resulted in their relationship ending. Am I
[15:55] Speaker 1: the jerk for refusing to wear a bracelet I wanted
[15:57] Speaker 1: but my husband paid for? I, 29 female, wanted to
[16:01] Speaker 1: buy a bracelet for myself because I finally had a
[16:03] Speaker 1: job after searching for a long time and I wanted
[16:05] Speaker 1: to treat myself. My husband, who's 35, suggested I buy
[16:09] Speaker 1: it from his parents because they run a jewelry store
[16:11] Speaker 1: and they'd offer me a good deal. That had been
[16:13] Speaker 1: my plan anyway, so when we visited them, they live
[16:16] Speaker 1: in another state, I went by their store and had
[16:18] Speaker 1: a look at what they had in stock. I decided
[16:21] Speaker 1: on a piece but didn't take it right away as
[16:23] Speaker 1: I needed to withdraw some cash. A few days later,
[16:26] Speaker 1: I overheard my husband talking to his mom about me
[16:28] Speaker 1: but couldn't hear what it was about. There had been
[16:30] Speaker 1: some negative talk in the past about me struggling to
[16:33] Speaker 1: find a job and I wanted to know if that's
[16:34] Speaker 1: what this was about. I asked my husband later what
[16:37] Speaker 1: they were discussing about me and he said nothing but
[16:40] Speaker 1: I got the feeling that he felt like he had
[16:41] Speaker 1: been caught. Then he said they were talking about the
[16:44] Speaker 1: bracelet I wanted and he was going to buy it.
[16:46] Speaker 1: I said I was happy to buy it for myself
[16:48] Speaker 1: but he insisted and said he'd sort it out. I
[16:51] Speaker 1: was thankful and said okay. Then after we returned home
[16:54] Speaker 1: I asked about the bracelet and he said he was
[16:56] Speaker 1: going to give it to me later, maybe my birthday.
[16:58] Speaker 1: I was annoyed because I wanted to buy the bracelet
[17:01] Speaker 1: and wear it, like immediately and that's what I would
[17:04] Speaker 1: have done if he hadn't bought it. He said he
[17:06] Speaker 1: paid for it and that was a nice thing for
[17:08] Speaker 1: him to do. I agreed but said if he kept
[17:10] Speaker 1: it then it felt like he took it away from
[17:12] Speaker 1: me and was making me wait to get something that
[17:14] Speaker 1: I was prepared to pay for myself. We had a
[17:17] Speaker 1: low-level fight about it, after which he said I can
[17:19] Speaker 1: just have it right then. But I said I didn't
[17:22] Speaker 1: even really want it anymore because now every time I
[17:24] Speaker 1: wear it, I will think about this argument and the
[17:26] Speaker 1: whole gesture feels ruined. He accused me of being ungrateful.
[17:30] Speaker 1: We recounted this story to his friends. I don't have
[17:33] Speaker 1: many friends here since we just moved here recently. And
[17:35] Speaker 1: they all agreed that he paid for it so I
[17:37] Speaker 1: should just be happy. But I feel like if he
[17:39] Speaker 1: wanted to pay for a gift that I had picked
[17:41] Speaker 1: out and was about to purchase myself, then it's not
[17:44] Speaker 1: fair to make me wait months for it. Am I
[17:46] Speaker 1: the jerk for being upset about him keeping it and
[17:48] Speaker 1: not wanting to wear the bracelet anymore? Info. He did
[17:52] Speaker 1: give me the bracelet right after the discussion but as
[17:54] Speaker 1: you can imagine, it wasn't as happy a moment as
[17:56] Speaker 1: anyone imagined. I was almost in tears from trying and
[17:59] Speaker 1: failing to explain my point of view and he was
[18:02] Speaker 1: also feeling frustrated. Not the jerk. This feels like a
[18:06] Speaker 1: weird power play by him. I would not be happy
[18:09] Speaker 1: if I was going to buy something myself with my
[18:11] Speaker 1: own money then have my significant other tell me they
[18:13] Speaker 1: would buy it for me then refuse to give it
[18:15] Speaker 1: to me. Honestly, you should go out and buy a
[18:17] Speaker 1: completely different bracelet and wear it with pride. Not the jerk.
[18:22] Speaker 1: He started moving the goalposts. You wanted that bracelet for
[18:25] Speaker 1: yourself that day. He made his grand gesture and bought
[18:28] Speaker 1: it for you. This is very nice, but then he
[18:30] Speaker 1: decided to put some conditions on it such as I'll
[18:33] Speaker 1: give it to you for your birthday. My suggestion, go
[18:36] Speaker 1: to another jewelry store and buy yourself a really nice
[18:38] Speaker 1: bracelet and start wearing it right away. My coworker is
[18:42] Speaker 1: upset about my girlfriend. I, 31 male, am divorced because
[18:47] Speaker 1: my ex-wife of 3 years, which was arranged, was adamant
[18:50] Speaker 1: on moving to India to be with her extended family
[18:52] Speaker 1: and I really didn't want to, so she gave me
[18:55] Speaker 1: an ultimatum. Again, I really didn't want to move to India.
[18:58] Speaker 1: So I had been exploring the dating market for about
[19:00] Speaker 1: 2 years, mostly around my age and had minimal success.
[19:04] Speaker 1: Not with finding dates themselves, but finding a viable partner.
[19:07] Speaker 1: When I do meet someone that I like, they either
[19:09] Speaker 1: have a boyfriend or a ring on their finger. There
[19:12] Speaker 1: was one girl who was 29 that I clicked well with,
[19:15] Speaker 1: but then she got a DUI and saw nothing wrong
[19:17] Speaker 1: with what she did. In April, I went to see
[19:20] Speaker 1: the NBA playoffs at a sports bar with my brother
[19:22] Speaker 1: and some friends. That's where I met my girlfriend who
[19:24] Speaker 1: was with her friends. Just a bit of info on her.
[19:27] Speaker 1: She's really cute, like Bambi eyes. She's probably the only
[19:30] Speaker 1: girl I've been with who can make me laugh. She's
[19:32] Speaker 1: really bubbly and gives golden retriever energy, as described by
[19:36] Speaker 1: my sister. She posts music to her Spotify, which has 40,000
[19:39] Speaker 1: monthly listeners. I listen to her songs when I'm down
[19:42] Speaker 1: and her beautiful voice cheers me up. She works in
[19:45] Speaker 1: web design, which is really cool. She sends me memes
[19:48] Speaker 1: and good night and good morning texts every day. She's
[19:50] Speaker 1: also 22. I guessed she was around that when we met,
[19:54] Speaker 1: so it wasn't surprising. Personally, I haven't really dated anyone
[19:57] Speaker 1: more than 3 years younger than me, but it just happened. She,
[20:00] Speaker 1: on the other hand, thought I was 25 at first,
[20:03] Speaker 1: but didn't care when she found out otherwise. The main
[20:05] Speaker 1: thing is, we click, and neither of us have an
[20:07] Speaker 1: issue with it. This is the happiest I've been in
[20:10] Speaker 1: years and she pursued me first. Here comes the topic
[20:13] Speaker 1: of the post. Last week was a busy day at
[20:15] Speaker 1: work and we had to stay overtime. We were supposed
[20:18] Speaker 1: to grab dinner afterwards, but instead, she visited me after
[20:21] Speaker 1: she was done at work. My coworker, 28, female, let's
[20:25] Speaker 1: call her C, saw us eating together while I did
[20:27] Speaker 1: my work. We talk a decent amount, but she didn't
[20:30] Speaker 1: know I had a girlfriend. When I introduced her, C
[20:33] Speaker 1: had this weird look in her eyes, but kept it friendly.
[20:35] Speaker 1: She then asked my girlfriend about her wrist tattoo, which
[20:38] Speaker 1: is her birthday. The next day, C came up to
[20:41] Speaker 1: me and started pressing me about my girlfriend's age. I
[20:44] Speaker 1: sort of knew this would happen since she's a certain
[20:46] Speaker 1: type of person, but yeah, I owned up to it.
[20:49] Speaker 1: My girlfriend is 22, turning 23. C told me that
[20:52] Speaker 1: she felt betrayed and started ranting about dynamics or whatever
[20:56] Speaker 1: for about 10 minutes. I don't get it. We're only
[20:58] Speaker 1: 8 years apart. That's the same generation. Is it really
[21:01] Speaker 1: that deep? None of my family members or friends care either.
[21:04] Speaker 1: Now C doesn't talk to me anymore, which is whatever.
[21:07] Speaker 1: I'm obviously not breaking up with her, but I'm curious
[21:10] Speaker 1: to see what you guys think about the whole situation.
[21:12] Speaker 1: Am I wrong? You're just setting yourself up for failure.
[21:16] Speaker 1: The age gap is weird because you are still young
[21:19] Speaker 1: and she's even younger. You can do mental gymnastics all day,
[21:22] Speaker 1: but she's still 22 with a growing brain until about 25.
[21:26] Speaker 1: She's gonna change and grow a lot more, mature in
[21:28] Speaker 1: those couple of years. Therefore, I just think it's weird. Plus,
[21:32] Speaker 1: she's still gotta do all of her 20s stuff, Like,
[21:34] Speaker 1: you think a 22-year-old is realistically ready to settle down?
[21:38] Speaker 1: She's gotta live her life first like you did. Find
[21:40] Speaker 1: someone your age range who is also ready to settle down.
[21:44] Speaker 1: My cat who was missing for 11 years has been found,
[21:47] Speaker 1: but they won't give him back. In 2012, my family
[21:50] Speaker 1: and I moved to Oklahoma with our cat, Shadow, who
[21:53] Speaker 1: was almost five years old at the time. Unfortunately, he
[21:56] Speaker 1: got out of the house one day and never returned.
[21:58] Speaker 1: For two long years, I searched endlessly holding on to
[22:02] Speaker 1: hope that someone would find him since he was microchipped,
[22:05] Speaker 1: but nothing ever came up. By the third year, I
[22:08] Speaker 1: reluctantly accepted that he might have passed on and we
[22:10] Speaker 1: mourned his loss. Even after all this time, we still
[22:13] Speaker 1: talk about how much we loved him and missed him.
[22:16] Speaker 1: Last year, we moved back to my hometown and recently
[22:19] Speaker 1: we faced a devastating tornado. Although our house was fine,
[22:23] Speaker 1: the financial burden was challenging since we only get paid
[22:26] Speaker 1: once a month on the 1st. We had to replace
[22:28] Speaker 1: over $ 500 worth of groceries we had already purchased for
[22:31] Speaker 1: the month, as well as other necessities to make our
[22:34] Speaker 1: house comfortable again. Then, out of the blue, a vet's
[22:37] Speaker 1: office called to inform me that they had found Shadow.
[22:40] Speaker 1: It turns out that he had been living on a
[22:42] Speaker 1: residential street for the past six years, surviving with the
[22:45] Speaker 1: kindness of the neighborhood people who fed him. He had
[22:48] Speaker 1: no regular vet visits, no cozy bed, and no protection
[22:51] Speaker 1: from the weather, except sporadic help from compassionate souls. Recently
[22:56] Speaker 1: he got into some trouble, was injured, and needed minor
[22:59] Speaker 1: care and stitches, which is when they discovered his microchip
[23:02] Speaker 1: with my contact information. I was ecstatic to hear the
[23:05] Speaker 1: news and couldn't wait to reunite with my sweet boy. However,
[23:09] Speaker 1: due to our financial situation, I couldn't make the trip
[23:12] Speaker 1: until August 1st. The woman who found him initially agreed
[23:15] Speaker 1: to wait, but unfortunately she started hesitating and wasn't sure
[23:19] Speaker 1: what to do with him during his recovery. We both
[23:22] Speaker 1: scrambled to find funds to arrange the trip. and thankfully,
[23:25] Speaker 1: the bill was lower than expected. Even my parents chipped
[23:28] Speaker 1: in from their emergency fund to help me retrieve Shadow.
[23:31] Speaker 1: But then, heartbreakingly, I was told that another couple in
[23:34] Speaker 1: the neighborhood had taken him in, and they already grew
[23:37] Speaker 1: attached to him and their kids loved him so much
[23:39] Speaker 1: that they decided to keep him. Since then, I haven't
[23:42] Speaker 1: heard anything from them, and I don't even know where
[23:44] Speaker 1: they live, except for the town. So now my kids
[23:47] Speaker 1: and I have to go through the mourning process all
[23:50] Speaker 1: over again. It's devastating and emotionally this loss will stay
[23:53] Speaker 1: with me forever. We love you Shadow and miss you
[23:57] Speaker 1: dearly and I'm so sorry that we won't be able
[23:59] Speaker 1: to see you. Edit. I spoke with the vet's office
[24:02] Speaker 1: this morning at 9.30 and they're contacting R to request
[24:06] Speaker 1: that she bring Shadow back so I can pick him up.
[24:09] Speaker 1: They also made it clear that R cannot rehome my
[24:11] Speaker 1: cat and he is legally mine under Oklahoma law. They
[24:15] Speaker 1: were incredibly apologetic about the whole situation and I've been
[24:18] Speaker 1: advised to file a police report since R admitted that
[24:21] Speaker 1: he never went to the vet during the years he
[24:23] Speaker 1: lived in the neighborhood and was brought in as a
[24:25] Speaker 1: stray without a home. Hopefully I'll hear back soon. Update.
[24:30] Speaker 1: After a long day of waiting, I just got off
[24:32] Speaker 1: the phone with the animal hospital. R has agreed to
[24:35] Speaker 1: return Shadow to them so I can pick him up tomorrow.
[24:38] Speaker 1: The police report will stand until I have Shadow back
[24:41] Speaker 1: in my possession. If everything goes as promised, I'll have
[24:44] Speaker 1: my baby boy back tomorrow. Update. I received a call
[24:48] Speaker 1: first thing this morning from the animal hospital and Shadow
[24:51] Speaker 1: is now finally home. He's responding to his name, playing,
[24:54] Speaker 1: coming up for pets, purring up a storm and exploring
[24:57] Speaker 1: the house. Although he looks a bit rough, he's settling
[25:00] Speaker 1: in wonderfully. We're letting him take his time to adjust
[25:03] Speaker 1: and he will never be allowed outside again. Last update,
[25:07] Speaker 1: he's eaten, explored the house, purred and played. Now it's
[25:10] Speaker 1: bedtime and after such a long day, he deserves a
[25:13] Speaker 1: good rest. I cheated on my wife and now she's
[25:17] Speaker 1: about to find out. My affair partner got served divorce
[25:21] Speaker 1: papers out of nowhere two days ago at work. Her
[25:23] Speaker 1: husband knows about us. It's only a matter of time
[25:26] Speaker 1: before my wife finds out. Don't know if I have
[25:29] Speaker 1: days or hours before the world as I know it
[25:31] Speaker 1: is gone. Took some time off work today to spend
[25:34] Speaker 1: time with my wife and our two daughters. My body
[25:37] Speaker 1: is in turmoil but strangely my mind is clear. It
[25:40] Speaker 1: reminds me of the days leading up to my dad's passing.
[25:43] Speaker 1: Time has slowed down and I'm aware of all the
[25:45] Speaker 1: things surrounding me. It's a nice feeling. My day today
[25:49] Speaker 1: was filled with observation of details and appreciation. My wife's
[25:53] Speaker 1: smell and the clothes she wears, my daughter's laughter, the
[25:56] Speaker 1: color of the kitchen tiles, the dog in the yard.
[25:59] Speaker 1: I feel blessed to have a healthy and beautiful family.
[26:01] Speaker 1: What will my daughters think of me? I look at
[26:04] Speaker 1: my wife that I love with all my heart and
[26:06] Speaker 1: I see a woman who stood by me no matter what.
[26:09] Speaker 1: We had our fair share of ups and downs like
[26:11] Speaker 1: most couples, but I never imagined a life without her.
[26:14] Speaker 1: How do I justify a six-year affair? Is that even forgivable?
[26:18] Speaker 1: I don't know what the future holds. All I know
[26:20] Speaker 1: is that the storm is coming and I'm here basking
[26:22] Speaker 1: in the sun until the clouds come rolling in. I
[26:25] Speaker 1: plan to confess over the weekend. Even if I know
[26:28] Speaker 1: the outcome, I pray she does not leave me. This
[26:31] Speaker 1: was so not worth it. Any suggestions on how to confess?
[26:34] Speaker 1: How do you start? What do I tell my daughters?
[26:37] Speaker 1: I've already made an appointment with a therapist. What else
[26:40] Speaker 1: can I do? Wish me luck. Edit. Yesterday I reached
[26:44] Speaker 1: out to my brother for advice. He left his wife
[26:47] Speaker 1: some years ago and married his affair partner. He seemed
[26:50] Speaker 1: happy with her. The grass is not greener for him
[26:53] Speaker 1: after all and he's planning on leaving her but he's
[26:55] Speaker 1: stuck at the moment. His advice is to not tell
[26:58] Speaker 1: my wife and to minimize if confronted. He also said
[27:01] Speaker 1: that I should let down affair partner gently so she
[27:03] Speaker 1: doesn't go nuclear on my wife and family. I'm hoping
[27:06] Speaker 1: for the best, but preparing for the worst. Not trying
[27:10] Speaker 1: to be mean or anything, but you never imagined life
[27:12] Speaker 1: without her? You had a six-year affair and you love
[27:15] Speaker 1: your wife with all your heart? It sounds like you're
[27:18] Speaker 1: really confused. OP. I'm not confused. Never was. I don't
[27:23] Speaker 1: have a problem separating love from hooking up. My heart
[27:26] Speaker 1: is loyal to my woman and she is it for me.
[27:29] Speaker 1: Six years is a long affair by any measure. If
[27:32] Speaker 1: it wasn't worth it, what was a fair partner to you?
[27:35] Speaker 1: Someone you could also mess around with along with your wife?
[27:38] Speaker 1: For the record, this is the classic definition of throwing
[27:40] Speaker 1: someone under the bus to save yourself. Maybe start by
[27:43] Speaker 1: owning up to what you've done. If you think the
[27:45] Speaker 1: affair partner's husband will reach out to your wife and
[27:48] Speaker 1: tell her everything he discovered, I would suggest you start
[27:50] Speaker 1: telling the truth. Whether your long-term affair is forgivable or
[27:54] Speaker 1: not is no longer in your control. OP. So many
[27:58] Speaker 1: responses about how I don't value my affair partner. Well,
[28:02] Speaker 1: since I'm pouring out my heart here, let me tell
[28:04] Speaker 1: you about my affair partner. She's gorgeous and a smart
[28:07] Speaker 1: woman who is funny and open to different experiences. She's
[28:10] Speaker 1: younger than myself and my wife. She's fit and she's beautiful.
[28:14] Speaker 1: But she's not my wife and does not even compare.
[28:17] Speaker 1: Six years on and off is a long time to invest.
[28:20] Speaker 1: As I see it, she's an adult who made her
[28:22] Speaker 1: own decision to cheat with a married man on her
[28:25] Speaker 1: husband for whatever reasons. Do I care for her? Yes.
[28:29] Speaker 1: Six years is a long time. Do I love her? No.
[28:32] Speaker 1: Did I say to her that I loved her? Yes,
[28:35] Speaker 1: of course I did. But I lied, just like I
[28:38] Speaker 1: lied to my wife. Did I use her? Yes, I did.
[28:41] Speaker 1: Did she use me too? Of course she did. We
[28:44] Speaker 1: both knew we were playing with fire. You're selfish. Six-year
[28:49] Speaker 1: affair and it was only not worth it because you
[28:51] Speaker 1: and affair partner were caught. Not only do you not
[28:54] Speaker 1: deserve your wife, but you do not deserve your affair partner.
[28:58] Speaker 1: UPDATE I was prepared for all scenarios, but not this one.
[29:02] Speaker 1: The doom day did not come in the shape I
[29:04] Speaker 1: was expecting. Affair partner convinced her soon-to-be ex to not
[29:08] Speaker 1: spill the beans to my wife in exchange for a
[29:10] Speaker 1: smooth divorce. I thought I was in the clear. Yesterday,
[29:14] Speaker 1: affair partner sent me a blurry photo of my wife
[29:16] Speaker 1: in the car with another man. She claimed they walked
[29:19] Speaker 1: hand-in-hand to his car from a store in a nearby
[29:22] Speaker 1: town to ours. She got a shot of the plates too.
[29:25] Speaker 1: After some digging, I now know that she's having an affair.
[29:28] Speaker 1: Don't know how long, for sure, but at least for
[29:30] Speaker 1: six months. He's a single dad, our age, and is
[29:34] Speaker 1: telling her to leave the marriage. She's telling him that
[29:36] Speaker 1: she loves him. I'm afraid to confront her. I feel
[29:39] Speaker 1: numb at this point. Took a day off of work.
[29:42] Speaker 1: Any advice on how to proceed? Should I just let
[29:45] Speaker 1: it run its course and monitor? Should I confront and
[29:47] Speaker 1: hope for the best? Should I confess to my affair
[29:50] Speaker 1: and hope that we can all come clean and make
[29:52] Speaker 1: way for a new marriage? I'm so utterly confused. I
[29:55] Speaker 1: have rehearsed the things that I would say and do
[29:58] Speaker 1: if she were to find out about my affairs. I
[30:00] Speaker 1: was not prepared for this. I think you need to
[30:03] Speaker 1: find out why your wife cheated. If her reasons line
[30:06] Speaker 1: up with yours, maybe there's a way for you to
[30:08] Speaker 1: move to don't ask, don't tell. OP. I'm desperate to
[30:12] Speaker 1: talk this out to know why this happened and how
[30:14] Speaker 1: invested she really is with this jerk. If she's doing
[30:17] Speaker 1: this out of revenge, maybe I have a chance because
[30:20] Speaker 1: if so, she does feel something for me at least.
[30:23] Speaker 1: I can't imagine her being emotionless, throwing away over 20 years.
[30:27] Speaker 1: I know this woman like I know myself. Deep down,
[30:30] Speaker 1: she's hurt, but also so very stubborn and proud. I
[30:34] Speaker 1: just want to know if she knew about my affair,
[30:36] Speaker 1: why didn't she confront me? I would have chosen her
[30:39] Speaker 1: over a fair partner in a nanosecond. And what is
[30:41] Speaker 1: she hoping to find with this guy? He's no better
[30:44] Speaker 1: than me, hooking up with a married woman. Ugh. I'm
[30:48] Speaker 1: trying to respect her wish to have some space, but
[30:50] Speaker 1: I'm desperate to just talk to her. Update. My marriage
[30:54] Speaker 1: seems to be over. Confronted my wife this past weekend.
[30:58] Speaker 1: Set her down without warning. and told her I knew
[31:01] Speaker 1: she was having an affair and with whom. Asked her
[31:04] Speaker 1: if she loved him and what her plan was. She
[31:06] Speaker 1: was caught off guard, went to the bathroom for 10 minutes.
[31:09] Speaker 1: When she came out, she looked me straight in the
[31:11] Speaker 1: eyes and said, I know about your affair too. I've
[31:15] Speaker 1: known for some time now. I love him and I
[31:18] Speaker 1: want a divorce. Next days were a blur. I tried
[31:21] Speaker 1: talking to her, but she just shuts me down. She
[31:24] Speaker 1: has moved into the spare bedroom and is making appointments
[31:26] Speaker 1: with law firms. Has told our two daughters. I have
[31:30] Speaker 1: signed up for emergency therapy. I'm on meds for dealing
[31:33] Speaker 1: with anxiety and a lack of sleep. This is surreal.
[31:36] Speaker 1: Heard her talk to him last night and cut the
[31:38] Speaker 1: internet cord. Kind of crazy because I need internet for
[31:41] Speaker 1: work and she just switched to her phone. Oh man,
[31:45] Speaker 1: so many emotions are running through me. How did this happen?
[31:48] Speaker 1: How can she not feel any emotion? Over 20 years gone.
[31:52] Speaker 1: All the love, friendship, partnership, intimacy, jokes, memories, plans for
[31:57] Speaker 1: our future, gone. Just like that. No looking back. I
[32:02] Speaker 1: feel so blindsided, and the only person I can talk
[32:05] Speaker 1: to is my brother who lives across the country. Sorry
[32:07] Speaker 1: to vent to you here. Just needed to get this out.
