[0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome to r slash am I the jerk, where Karen
[0:02] Speaker 1: steals $ 10, 000 worth of toys. My girlfriend's mother stole my $ 10, 000
[0:08] Speaker 1: Transformers toy collection, plus two year update. My relationship with
[0:13] Speaker 1: my girlfriend's mother recently turned sour after she took my
[0:16] Speaker 1: Transformers toys from my flat to give to her grandson.
[0:19] Speaker 1: She has refused to return them, insisting that someone in
[0:22] Speaker 1: their 20s shouldn't have toys in their flat. The issue
[0:25] Speaker 1: is that these are collectibles, not just toys. Many of
[0:28] Speaker 1: them date back to the 1980s, and their combined value
[0:31] Speaker 1: is roughly $ 10, 000 to $ 11, 000. I haven't gotten them appraised yet,
[0:36] Speaker 1: but that's the figure I'd put down if I report
[0:38] Speaker 1: the theft. I informed her of their value, but she
[0:41] Speaker 1: brushed it off, saying, Well, they're just toys. I even
[0:45] Speaker 1: offered to go to the store to pick out new
[0:46] Speaker 1: toys for her grandson, but she refused, saying, They don't
[0:50] Speaker 1: make them like they used to. I've discussed the situation
[0:53] Speaker 1: with my girlfriend, but she just doesn't want to get
[0:55] Speaker 1: involved and prefers that I handle it on my own.
[0:59] Speaker 1: I told her I've exhausted all my options and the
[1:01] Speaker 1: next logical step is to report the items as stolen.
[1:05] Speaker 1: Stealing items worth $ 10, 000 isn't a misdemeanor, it's a felony.
[1:09] Speaker 1: On top of that, her mother entering my flat using
[1:12] Speaker 1: my girlfriend's key. My girlfriend said that she would talk
[1:14] Speaker 1: to her mother and ask her not to do anything
[1:17] Speaker 1: similar again. But she also told me I should let
[1:19] Speaker 1: this go and not escalate the situation. If I report it,
[1:23] Speaker 1: we're done. She would only involve herself if I promised
[1:26] Speaker 1: not to do anything about it and value our two
[1:28] Speaker 1: and a half year relationship more than some plastic toys.
[1:32] Speaker 1: I can't understand why she doesn't value our relationship enough
[1:35] Speaker 1: to get my stuff back from her family. I just
[1:38] Speaker 1: want my belongings returned. A part of me even believes
[1:41] Speaker 1: her mother might try to sell them for profit and
[1:43] Speaker 1: buy cheaper toys for her grandson's 6th birthday. I don't
[1:46] Speaker 1: want to involve the police and ruin my relationship with
[1:49] Speaker 1: my girlfriend or her mother. Up until now, her mother
[1:52] Speaker 1: has always been nice to me. Is there a more
[1:54] Speaker 1: effective approach that I can take? Why not go over
[1:58] Speaker 1: and get them back yourself? OP. Get them how? I
[2:01] Speaker 1: don't know where they are. They're most likely at her house,
[2:04] Speaker 1: but I don't think she'll let me search for my stuff.
[2:07] Speaker 1: Asking for them hasn't worked. Hang on. She can enter
[2:10] Speaker 1: your house and steal your stuff, but she won't let
[2:12] Speaker 1: you into her house to get your stolen property back? Bro,
[2:16] Speaker 1: I can't even. Tell your girlfriend to take you over
[2:19] Speaker 1: there and let you in to look for your stuff. Also,
[2:22] Speaker 1: the kid who received your stolen property is related to
[2:24] Speaker 1: your girlfriend. Tell her to get in touch with the
[2:26] Speaker 1: kid's family to return the stolen property. If your girlfriend
[2:30] Speaker 1: won't do either, then she's morally complicit in you being robbed.
[2:34] Speaker 1: Are you sure you want to be with a girlfriend
[2:35] Speaker 1: who supports her mother in theft? Instead of just taking
[2:38] Speaker 1: the toys and bringing them back to you? OP. I
[2:41] Speaker 1: see what you're saying, but other than this one thing,
[2:44] Speaker 1: the rest of our relationship has been good. Here's the thing.
[2:48] Speaker 1: Her mother let herself into your home to intentionally steal
[2:50] Speaker 1: from you, and your girlfriend won't say anything, take the
[2:53] Speaker 1: key back, or demand the toys be returned. She's doing
[2:56] Speaker 1: nothing and will punish you if you take the only
[2:59] Speaker 1: option you have left. Basically, your girlfriend has helped her
[3:02] Speaker 1: mom to steal from you. Are you sure your girlfriend
[3:04] Speaker 1: didn't want them taken too? Why is it okay for
[3:07] Speaker 1: her to throw away your two and a half year
[3:09] Speaker 1: relationship so that her mom can steal from you? Why
[3:12] Speaker 1: would you want to preserve a relationship with someone who
[3:14] Speaker 1: thinks so little of you, your feelings, and your belongings? Update.
[3:19] Speaker 1: I broke up with my girlfriend because she continued to
[3:21] Speaker 1: take her mom's side and threatened to break up with me.
[3:23] Speaker 1: A police report has now been filed and I listed
[3:26] Speaker 1: the estimate value as $ 13, 000. Fingers crossed for now. Don't
[3:32] Speaker 1: forget to change your locks. O.P. Already asked the building
[3:36] Speaker 1: manager to do that. They should be changed by the
[3:38] Speaker 1: end of the week. Does the theft of over $ 10, 000
[3:42] Speaker 1: worth of stuff increase the potential charges your girlfriend's mom
[3:44] Speaker 1: could face? Not to mention they may get damaged while
[3:47] Speaker 1: in her possession. O.P. According to the police, yes. That's
[3:51] Speaker 1: why they asked me to increase the estimated value to $ 13, 000.
[3:53] Speaker 1: They'll need to be appraised once retrieved for charges to
[3:57] Speaker 1: be pressed. Everything will be out of the box now.
[4:00] Speaker 1: No way a kid understands the values, unless she sold
[4:03] Speaker 1: them to collectors, in which case she'll have to pay
[4:05] Speaker 1: you for them. Final update, two years later. Unfortunately, I
[4:10] Speaker 1: wasn't able to recover any of them, but we settled
[4:13] Speaker 1: for $ 7, 000. This amount is less than I believe was fair,
[4:17] Speaker 1: but at this point, I'm ready to move on. The
[4:19] Speaker 1: past two years have been incredibly tough, and I just
[4:21] Speaker 1: want to put this behind me. Thank you for all
[4:23] Speaker 1: of your support. It meant a lot to me when
[4:26] Speaker 1: I needed it the most. I bet she was never
[4:29] Speaker 1: going to give them to her grandson and sold them.
[4:31] Speaker 1: That's why there was nothing to recover and OP got
[4:34] Speaker 1: half of their value. The experienced redditor in me says
[4:37] Speaker 1: the girlfriend didn't want them in their house and was
[4:40] Speaker 1: in on it because she knew what they were worth.
[4:42] Speaker 1: She was hoping OP would let it go. Am I
[4:45] Speaker 1: the jerk for ruining my friend's vacation? I'm 38 female,
[4:50] Speaker 1: just got back from a vacation with two of my
[4:52] Speaker 1: longtime friends, Kate who's 40 and Mary who's 38. I've
[4:56] Speaker 1: known them both since university and we've always been pretty close.
[4:59] Speaker 1: The three of us had been planning this Bali trip
[5:01] Speaker 1: for a few months along with our husbands and their kids.
[5:05] Speaker 1: They both have kids under 5 while my husband Jake
[5:07] Speaker 1: and I are child free. We agreed to split the
[5:10] Speaker 1: cost of a 4 bedroom villa 3 ways and everything
[5:12] Speaker 1: seemed fine at first. Jake and I arrived in Bali
[5:16] Speaker 1: earlier than the rest of the group because we had
[5:18] Speaker 1: different flights. Once we got to the villa we waited
[5:20] Speaker 1: to choose rooms with our friends and didn't mind when
[5:23] Speaker 1: they both chose the ones with en-suites. We had a
[5:25] Speaker 1: good time during the trip. Jake and I did some
[5:28] Speaker 1: couples activities like massages, hiking, and dinners. But we also
[5:32] Speaker 1: spent time with Kate and Mary and their families whenever
[5:34] Speaker 1: it worked for everyone. To be nice, I even surprised
[5:37] Speaker 1: them with massages to give them a break. The only
[5:40] Speaker 1: thing that made me uncomfortable was that whenever I ordered
[5:42] Speaker 1: a drink, like a cocktail before dinner or a glass
[5:45] Speaker 1: of wine with meals, I'd get comments like, Oh, you're
[5:48] Speaker 1: drinking again? For context, I'm a social drinker and I
[5:52] Speaker 1: don't drink often, but we were on vacation and I
[5:54] Speaker 1: don't think it was a big deal, especially since our
[5:57] Speaker 1: husbands were drinking too. I just ignored the comments so
[6:00] Speaker 1: I could enjoy the trip. On the last night, Jake
[6:02] Speaker 1: and I made plans with the guys to go out
[6:05] Speaker 1: and Kate and Mary said they were staying in to pack.
[6:07] Speaker 1: Jake convinced me to join him and since it was
[6:09] Speaker 1: the last night of our vacation, I didn't want to
[6:11] Speaker 1: stay in either. We went out and had a great time.
[6:14] Speaker 1: We got home at 1am and I passed out straight after.
[6:18] Speaker 1: The next morning was a bit chaotic with everyone packing
[6:20] Speaker 1: and checking out but we all made it back home
[6:22] Speaker 1: without issue. We had booked business class seats back so
[6:26] Speaker 1: we were separated during the flight and said quick goodbyes
[6:28] Speaker 1: at the airport. A week after returning home I got
[6:31] Speaker 1: a long text from Kate saying that both she and
[6:34] Speaker 1: Mary wanted to reduce contact with me because I had
[6:37] Speaker 1: ruined their vacation. They mentioned several things like me drinking
[6:41] Speaker 1: every night. Not acting like a girl's girl, booking different flights,
[6:45] Speaker 1: not hanging out with them enough, and being selfish for
[6:47] Speaker 1: not helping them with their kids. She even said I
[6:50] Speaker 1: was just focused on partying and not acting my age.
[6:53] Speaker 1: This message really hurt me. I cried after reading it
[6:56] Speaker 1: and I honestly don't know what to think. I thought
[6:58] Speaker 1: I was just enjoying my vacation, but clearly they had
[7:01] Speaker 1: a very different view. I haven't responded yet and my
[7:04] Speaker 1: husband has been asking what's bothering me, but I don't
[7:06] Speaker 1: know what to say. Am I the jerk for how
[7:09] Speaker 1: I acted during the trip? Edit, four hours later. Thank
[7:13] Speaker 1: you for all of your kind words. Reading through the
[7:15] Speaker 1: responses and seeing how many of you are upset on
[7:17] Speaker 1: my behalf has made me reflect on how I initially
[7:20] Speaker 1: planned to handle things. I was going to apologize, thinking
[7:23] Speaker 1: it might be the easiest way to keep the peace,
[7:25] Speaker 1: but now I realize that might not be the right
[7:27] Speaker 1: approach after all. I've also shown my husband, Jake, this
[7:31] Speaker 1: post and the text message, and he told me to
[7:33] Speaker 1: thank you for looking out for me. He's actually pretty
[7:36] Speaker 1: angry on my behalf about the text message. I showed
[7:39] Speaker 1: him some of the comments that gave me insight into
[7:41] Speaker 1: how my friends may have been feeling which has given
[7:43] Speaker 1: us both a lot to think about. He asked me
[7:45] Speaker 1: what I wanted to do next and if I wanted
[7:47] Speaker 1: him to respond to my friends for me. While I
[7:50] Speaker 1: appreciated the offer, I told him I'm still thinking it over.
[7:53] Speaker 1: He reassured me that he's here for me no matter
[7:55] Speaker 1: what and if I decide I want him to step in,
[7:57] Speaker 1: he'll be ready to say something for my behalf. For now,
[8:00] Speaker 1: I'm going to sleep on it and take some time
[8:02] Speaker 1: before I respond or don't respond to the text message.
[8:06] Speaker 1: Not the jerk. They are 100% jealous. There's a stage
[8:10] Speaker 1: in life where child-free people do better hanging out with
[8:13] Speaker 1: other child-free people. People with kids can't see past their
[8:16] Speaker 1: family lives and don't understand why you might want to
[8:18] Speaker 1: live your life. Traveling with people like that is an
[8:21] Speaker 1: absolute no. OP. I think you're right. I shouldn't have
[8:25] Speaker 1: gone on the trip and personally, I don't remember them
[8:28] Speaker 1: being so judgmental. It does seem a bit weird to
[8:31] Speaker 1: me that these are your friends of 15 years and
[8:34] Speaker 1: yet you chose to spend time with them only when
[8:36] Speaker 1: it was a group activity. It would make more sense
[8:38] Speaker 1: to me that you would want to spend time with them.
[8:40] Speaker 1: Go out, the three of you. Leave the men behind.
[8:43] Speaker 1: Or you stay behind when the men went out. You
[8:45] Speaker 1: surprised them with massages. Did you arrange it for the
[8:48] Speaker 1: three of you? Or did you send them off with
[8:50] Speaker 1: their husbands? Did you babysit? You booked separate flights. OP.
[8:54] Speaker 1: We did group activities. Or I went out with my husband.
[8:58] Speaker 1: The massages were there for the three of us. No,
[9:00] Speaker 1: I did not babysit. As you said, these are my
[9:03] Speaker 1: girlfriends of about 15 years. I should have offered to
[9:06] Speaker 1: babysit without having to be asked. Thanks for a different
[9:08] Speaker 1: point of view. Update. I spoke with Mary over text.
[9:13] Speaker 1: She said she agreed for the most part and that
[9:15] Speaker 1: they both had a problem with me for ages because
[9:17] Speaker 1: I invited them to or only organized adult-themed events and
[9:21] Speaker 1: nothing family-friendly, which isn't true. I was the one who
[9:24] Speaker 1: organized her baby shower. I added both of my ex-friends
[9:27] Speaker 1: to a group chat to discuss my feelings. Throughout the interaction,
[9:31] Speaker 1: there was no apology for their passive-aggressive comments or even
[9:34] Speaker 1: an acknowledgement that I tried to be accommodating. I gave
[9:37] Speaker 1: them better rooms, organized massages, kept our shared space organized,
[9:41] Speaker 1: made all of the dinner reservations, helped prep snacks, and
[9:44] Speaker 1: got gifts for them and their kids. Mary just said
[9:47] Speaker 1: that she's sorry it's come to this and Kate just
[9:49] Speaker 1: ignored me. I was so disappointed in these women who
[9:52] Speaker 1: I thought were my friends. I blocked them and unfollowed
[9:55] Speaker 1: them on social media. I'm going to share this Reddit
[9:57] Speaker 1: post with our mutual friends who want the tea. Told
[10:00] Speaker 1: Jake about it and he just said good riddance. I'm
[10:03] Speaker 1: going to Japan next March and Fiji in December for
[10:05] Speaker 1: a wedding. I'll be posting on social media with the caption,
[10:09] Speaker 1: finally a real vacation. Thank you to the person who
[10:12] Speaker 1: suggested it. Out of curiosity, what did your mutual friends
[10:16] Speaker 1: think about it? P.S. You're not the jerk. O.P. I
[10:20] Speaker 1: spoke to a few others and they kind of mentioned
[10:22] Speaker 1: how they knew and that they also got some comments
[10:25] Speaker 1: on other stuff in the past, so they were including
[10:28] Speaker 1: these two for my sake. I think I'll be fine
[10:30] Speaker 1: on the friendship front. Am I the jerk for hiding
[10:34] Speaker 1: my family wealth from my boyfriend? So I, 17 female,
[10:38] Speaker 1: have been dating my boyfriend, Mike, who's 16, for about
[10:40] Speaker 1: 3 months. We're both juniors in high school and everything
[10:43] Speaker 1: has been going really well between us. We met through
[10:46] Speaker 1: mutual friends about 8 months ago and hit it off quickly.
[10:49] Speaker 1: He's funny, kind, and down to earth. We have an
[10:52] Speaker 1: amazing relationship, but our financial situations are different. My family
[10:56] Speaker 1: is pretty well off. Not rich rich, no mansions, yachts, etc.
[11:00] Speaker 1: But we live in a nice house, take 1-2 vacations
[11:03] Speaker 1: per year, and I don't really have to stress about money.
[11:06] Speaker 1: I only work just so I'm not sitting at home
[11:08] Speaker 1: doing nothing. That being said, I've always been taught not
[11:11] Speaker 1: to flaunt it or bring it up. We drive normal
[11:13] Speaker 1: cars and live a fairly average lifestyle, even if we
[11:16] Speaker 1: have more savings than others. I never talk about money
[11:19] Speaker 1: with people. Mike's family doesn't have as much. He's mentioned
[11:23] Speaker 1: how they struggle sometimes to pay bills and how they
[11:25] Speaker 1: have to budget for everything. Because of this, he's made
[11:28] Speaker 1: a few comments about rich kids being spoiled or out
[11:31] Speaker 1: of touch, which is why I didn't bring up my
[11:33] Speaker 1: family's situation. I didn't want him to see me differently
[11:36] Speaker 1: or feel awkward about the differences between us. I don't
[11:38] Speaker 1: care what his financial situation is, I love him anyway.
[11:42] Speaker 1: He's seen my house and knows my parents run a business,
[11:45] Speaker 1: but he doesn't know about all my parents' assets, which
[11:47] Speaker 1: make a lot more money and are what keeps us comfortable.
[11:50] Speaker 1: So he doesn't know how much we really have. Recently,
[11:53] Speaker 1: Mike and I had dinner with my family along with
[11:55] Speaker 1: my cousins. We all sat down and talked about traveling
[11:58] Speaker 1: in general, and one of my cousins mentioned a vacation
[12:01] Speaker 1: home my parents had. She was talking about the cabin
[12:04] Speaker 1: we have in the mountains. Our family loves camping and hiking,
[12:07] Speaker 1: so we vacation there sometimes. Mike went quiet and I
[12:10] Speaker 1: could tell something was up. Later, when we were alone,
[12:13] Speaker 1: he asked why I never told him that my family
[12:15] Speaker 1: had so much money. I tried to explain that it
[12:18] Speaker 1: wasn't something I thought was important and I didn't want
[12:20] Speaker 1: him to feel weird about it. Besides, he knew I
[12:23] Speaker 1: was more well-off than him, he just didn't know the
[12:25] Speaker 1: full extent. That's when he got a bit upset and
[12:28] Speaker 1: said something that caught me off guard. He mentioned how
[12:30] Speaker 1: I could have helped him out with some of the
[12:32] Speaker 1: things he's been struggling with financially, like gas money or
[12:35] Speaker 1: when his car needed repairs a few months ago. He
[12:38] Speaker 1: said that he wasn't asking for handouts but it feels
[12:40] Speaker 1: like I was hiding something from him when I could
[12:42] Speaker 1: have made things easier. I told him I don't want
[12:45] Speaker 1: to make things awkward between us by offering money and
[12:47] Speaker 1: I didn't think it was my place to get involved
[12:49] Speaker 1: with his finances. But now he says it feels like
[12:52] Speaker 1: I wasn't being honest and that maybe I don't trust
[12:54] Speaker 1: him enough to share that part of my life. Over
[12:57] Speaker 1: the next few weeks, Mike started getting a little invasive.
[13:00] Speaker 1: He looked up my house on Zillow and was shocked
[13:02] Speaker 1: at the value. Mike showed me his screen and was
[13:05] Speaker 1: upset that he didn't see how rich we were. He
[13:08] Speaker 1: also started looking up my family members on social media
[13:11] Speaker 1: sites to see what they do and how rich they are. Cousins, uncles, aunts.
[13:16] Speaker 1: I got really mad and told him I didn't appreciate
[13:18] Speaker 1: him digging through my family life and my finances are
[13:21] Speaker 1: not his business. I asked him to stop being weird.
[13:24] Speaker 1: Mike then responded that he was just trying to fully
[13:27] Speaker 1: understand what my lifestyle is like but I think he's
[13:30] Speaker 1: going completely off the rails. I didn't mean for it
[13:32] Speaker 1: to turn into such a big deal. I was just
[13:34] Speaker 1: trying to avoid making him feel uncomfortable or like he
[13:37] Speaker 1: was less than me. I also believe my family finances
[13:40] Speaker 1: are irrelevant. Update. Yesterday I called Mike and asked if
[13:45] Speaker 1: we could meet up for coffee to discuss what to
[13:46] Speaker 1: do next. He agreed. As we talked, I explained my
[13:50] Speaker 1: family's finances are private and it was not my business
[13:53] Speaker 1: to tell other people. The money isn't even technically mine.
[13:56] Speaker 1: It's my parents. This is why I didn't tell him.
[13:59] Speaker 1: Mike didn't take this very well. He asked me how
[14:01] Speaker 1: I could just watch him struggle for months and not
[14:03] Speaker 1: do anything, how I pretended to feel bad for him
[14:06] Speaker 1: when I didn't even understand how bad his life was.
[14:09] Speaker 1: I responded that I did feel bad, and I have
[14:11] Speaker 1: been supportive. I tried to help get him a job
[14:14] Speaker 1: at my parents' grocery store, but he didn't like it,
[14:16] Speaker 1: so he refused. I would always give him rides since
[14:19] Speaker 1: gas was expensive. I offered gas money whenever he did
[14:22] Speaker 1: drive me, but he always refused since he wanted to
[14:24] Speaker 1: pay for me. Even emotionally, I was trying to be
[14:27] Speaker 1: as supportive as I could while he was stressed. I
[14:30] Speaker 1: acknowledge that I don't understand how hard his life is
[14:32] Speaker 1: because I've never lived it, but I've done my best
[14:35] Speaker 1: to be supportive emotionally. Mike dismissed all of that and
[14:38] Speaker 1: said that wasn't the point. He said that for him,
[14:41] Speaker 1: the money wasn't the issue, it was trust. He felt
[14:44] Speaker 1: that I had kept something significant from him and he's
[14:46] Speaker 1: wondering what else I was hiding. He said that he
[14:48] Speaker 1: wasn't asking for handouts, but knowing I had the means
[14:51] Speaker 1: to help him but chose not to made him feel unsupported.
[14:55] Speaker 1: Mike explained he felt like that was a huge gap
[14:57] Speaker 1: between us now and he will never be equal to
[14:59] Speaker 1: me He told me that there was no reason for
[15:02] Speaker 1: me to hide such a big secret from him. At
[15:04] Speaker 1: this point, I got angry. I corrected him, saying he
[15:07] Speaker 1: was asking for handouts. I mentioned our previous conversation about
[15:11] Speaker 1: how he said that I could have helped with his
[15:13] Speaker 1: car and gas. I explained the money he so desperately
[15:17] Speaker 1: wanted wasn't even mine, it's my family's. I told him
[15:20] Speaker 1: that he wasn't entitled to the money my parents spent
[15:22] Speaker 1: over two decades earning. I couldn't just bail him out
[15:25] Speaker 1: of whatever problems he has with money. I went back
[15:28] Speaker 1: to how I did support him, just not financially. I'm
[15:31] Speaker 1: ashamed to admit that I did kind of lose my
[15:33] Speaker 1: cool here and almost started yelling. After that, I calmed
[15:36] Speaker 1: down and realized that I would never shame him for
[15:39] Speaker 1: his struggles. My family never has either. They love him.
[15:42] Speaker 1: We don't care about how much money someone has. We
[15:45] Speaker 1: talked more, but I eventually told him I wanted to
[15:47] Speaker 1: break up. It wasn't because he was upset I hid
[15:50] Speaker 1: my wealth, but it was because he dug into my
[15:52] Speaker 1: family members' lives. I told him that it was extremely
[15:55] Speaker 1: invasive and I couldn't forgive that. I couldn't feel comfortable
[15:58] Speaker 1: around someone who would do that. It was a breach
[16:00] Speaker 1: of trust for me. Mike also told me that he
[16:02] Speaker 1: wanted to break up since he didn't feel comfortable in
[16:05] Speaker 1: a relationship where the financial gap is so big and
[16:08] Speaker 1: that our lives were just too different. We ended the
[16:10] Speaker 1: conversation and parted ways. The good thing is he goes
[16:13] Speaker 1: to a different school so I won't be seeing him around.
[16:16] Speaker 1: Part of me feels sad since I do love him.
[16:18] Speaker 1: It was my first relationship and I wanted it to work.
[16:21] Speaker 1: But I also feel relieved because I wasn't sure if
[16:24] Speaker 1: I could take whatever Mike would do if I stayed.
[16:26] Speaker 1: I really didn't like him snooping in my family's lives.
[16:29] Speaker 1: I'm wondering if I made a mistake ending the relationship,
[16:31] Speaker 1: and it really sucks. Was I too harsh? I'm not
[16:34] Speaker 1: even sure. I don't think I'll be dating anytime soon.
[16:37] Speaker 1: I'm not too eager now. And just to be clear,
[16:40] Speaker 1: I don't hate Mike. I think he probably just never
[16:42] Speaker 1: saw money like ours, or he was just shocked in general.
[16:46] Speaker 1: I get that he is 16, and I'm sure he'll
[16:48] Speaker 1: grow out of this mentality. I hope he does have
[16:50] Speaker 1: a better life, but I can't continue with him. I
[16:52] Speaker 1: don't like that he tried to dig into my family
[16:54] Speaker 1: members' lives. I also wanted to clarify a few things.
[16:58] Speaker 1: A lot of people were asking about the car. Mike's
[17:00] Speaker 1: car is old and used and it was gifted to
[17:02] Speaker 1: him by his uncle since he doesn't use it anymore.
[17:05] Speaker 1: It's about 8 years old and Mike didn't buy the car.
[17:08] Speaker 1: Mike doesn't know the true value of my parents' money.
[17:10] Speaker 1: That's why he was digging around. It seems like people
[17:13] Speaker 1: on Reddit thought I was perceived as middle class or poor.
[17:16] Speaker 1: I never was. Mike and others knew that I lived
[17:19] Speaker 1: a well-off life. I just never talked about money, that's all.
[17:22] Speaker 1: Mike does not know about my parents' other assets. He
[17:25] Speaker 1: started thinking we had more money than he thought because
[17:28] Speaker 1: he found out about our vacation home. That's why he
[17:30] Speaker 1: tried digging through my family's information. He still doesn't even
[17:33] Speaker 1: know close to anything since my parents keep their assets
[17:36] Speaker 1: a secret. Even I don't know all of them. People
[17:39] Speaker 1: don't start digging into you until you give them a
[17:41] Speaker 1: reason to. Not the jerk. You don't need to share
[17:44] Speaker 1: this info until you're comfortable. I didn't know a fraction
[17:47] Speaker 1: of the wealth of my wife's parents until after we
[17:50] Speaker 1: were married. It didn't really make a difference to me
[17:52] Speaker 1: other than some behaviors made more sense after I knew.
[17:55] Speaker 1: Don't take this the wrong way, but I would lean
[17:57] Speaker 1: on the side of caution and not share anything regarding
[18:00] Speaker 1: your family's wealth or status until you're married or committed
[18:03] Speaker 1: and comfortable. Money does odd things to people, even those
[18:06] Speaker 1: who are normally good. Not the jerk. I see red flags.
[18:11] Speaker 1: You're right to keep your family's finances private. You know
[18:14] Speaker 1: what's theirs is theirs. You're not putting yourself in his
[18:17] Speaker 1: shoes at all. He's struggling and you do nothing because
[18:21] Speaker 1: what if he turns out to be a gold digger?
[18:23] Speaker 1: If you were never able to give him a chance,
[18:25] Speaker 1: you shouldn't have let him on. If you have weird
[18:27] Speaker 1: hangups about poor people, then I guess just date rich ones. OP.
[18:32] Speaker 1: It's not that I was scared he would be a
[18:33] Speaker 1: gold digger. I did get nervous he would react negatively,
[18:37] Speaker 1: but at the same time, it's my family's wealth, not mine.
[18:40] Speaker 1: We only dated for three months, which is too soon
[18:42] Speaker 1: to open up about my financial secrets. And I did nothing?
[18:45] Speaker 1: I did help him out. I tried to get him
[18:47] Speaker 1: a job, but he said no. I drove him around.
[18:50] Speaker 1: I've been there to emotionally support him. The boyfriend keeps
[18:54] Speaker 1: saying he's not asking for handouts while literally asking how
[18:57] Speaker 1: she could watch him struggling financially without helping out. How
[19:01] Speaker 1: is anyone supposed to take that as anything other than
[19:03] Speaker 1: asking for money? OP tried to get him a job
[19:06] Speaker 1: and he refused. She tried to give him gas money
[19:08] Speaker 1: when he took her somewhere and he refused. Was she
[19:10] Speaker 1: supposed to straight up buy him a new car? And
[19:13] Speaker 1: looking up the value of her house and her relatives'
[19:15] Speaker 1: jobs is just creepy. Am I the jerk for ditching
[19:19] Speaker 1: a wedding that I was the maid of honor in
[19:21] Speaker 1: because the bride tried to set me up with the
[19:23] Speaker 1: best man? I was supposed to be maid of honor
[19:26] Speaker 1: at a wedding a few weeks ago. I ended up
[19:28] Speaker 1: just leaving and going home to my boyfriend of six
[19:30] Speaker 1: years after the bride and groom tried to set me
[19:33] Speaker 1: up with the best man. When my friend got engaged
[19:35] Speaker 1: last year, I was excited for her and even more
[19:38] Speaker 1: excited when she asked me to be the maid of honor.
[19:40] Speaker 1: As the invites went out though, she asked me not
[19:42] Speaker 1: to bring my boyfriend to the wedding. I was really
[19:45] Speaker 1: upset about that but my boyfriend talked me down, telling
[19:48] Speaker 1: me that weddings were expensive. and they were probably trying
[19:50] Speaker 1: to keep the guest list down. They didn't really know
[19:53] Speaker 1: him so it would be fine for me to go
[19:55] Speaker 1: without him. That made sense to me so I didn't
[19:57] Speaker 1: say or do anything after that and just continued helping
[20:00] Speaker 1: as I could as the maid of honor. Nothing else
[20:03] Speaker 1: concerning happened until a couple of days before the wedding.
[20:06] Speaker 1: The bride asked me to give the best man a
[20:08] Speaker 1: ride to and from the wedding which was about a
[20:10] Speaker 1: four hour drive. I thought it was just part of
[20:12] Speaker 1: it as he was a veteran and had his own
[20:14] Speaker 1: issues surrounding that. So I gave him a ride up
[20:17] Speaker 1: to the Airbnb we were staying at before the wedding.
[20:20] Speaker 1: The whole time he tried to make conversation that was
[20:22] Speaker 1: just weird to me. I wasn't into it and was
[20:25] Speaker 1: just trying my best to be nice to him. At
[20:27] Speaker 1: the Airbnb with everyone, I immediately noticed things were off.
[20:31] Speaker 1: All the other bridesmaids had their boyfriends there and things
[20:34] Speaker 1: got really awkward when I found out I was in
[20:36] Speaker 1: a room with the best man. The next day, before
[20:39] Speaker 1: the rehearsal dinner, the bride and groom cornered me in
[20:41] Speaker 1: a room and said the best man was an incredible
[20:44] Speaker 1: guy and that I was blowing him off without really
[20:46] Speaker 1: giving him a chance. I told them, of course not,
[20:49] Speaker 1: I have a serious long-term boyfriend which y'all specifically told
[20:53] Speaker 1: me not to bring. Then the bride cut in and
[20:55] Speaker 1: told me, well, that really isn't that serious since he
[20:58] Speaker 1: hasn't proposed in so long. I argued back, saying that
[21:02] Speaker 1: was because we were both still in school. We continued
[21:05] Speaker 1: arguing for a while before I finally said, Forget it,
[21:08] Speaker 1: I'm going home. I got called all sorts of names
[21:11] Speaker 1: as I was leaving the room. I packed up and left.
[21:14] Speaker 1: I got a lot of calls on the way home
[21:16] Speaker 1: which I ignored until my boyfriend called. Apparently, the bride
[21:19] Speaker 1: had called him and told him I just left for
[21:21] Speaker 1: no reason and he called to check in on me.
[21:24] Speaker 1: I told him everything that had happened and he was
[21:25] Speaker 1: dumbstruck by it all. After the wedding, the bride, groom
[21:29] Speaker 1: and a lot of their friends called or messaged me,
[21:32] Speaker 1: telling me how horrible I was for leaving the night
[21:34] Speaker 1: before the wedding for no reason. None of them were
[21:36] Speaker 1: receptive to my side of things and it's starting to
[21:39] Speaker 1: worry me that maybe I overreacted by just leaving like that. Anyway,
[21:43] Speaker 1: am I the jerk? Edit. I started dating my boyfriend
[21:46] Speaker 1: in high school. He's two years older than me. My
[21:49] Speaker 1: friends didn't really know him though since he didn't go
[21:51] Speaker 1: to the same school as us. When we do see
[21:53] Speaker 1: each other, it's usually halfway between our schools. Not the jerk.
[21:58] Speaker 1: This is so bizarre and I feel bad for the
[22:00] Speaker 1: poor best man who probably has no idea OP has
[22:03] Speaker 1: a boyfriend. But even if she was single and it
[22:05] Speaker 1: was a legitimate setup, I find it so creepy that
[22:08] Speaker 1: OP was expected to share a room with him and
[22:10] Speaker 1: she doesn't even know him. And she wasn't even told
[22:12] Speaker 1: about it first. There's also a pretty decent age gap
[22:15] Speaker 1: to set up someone who's 20 with someone who's 28
[22:18] Speaker 1: without even telling her it's a setup. And it's hardly
[22:21] Speaker 1: shocking that the boyfriend hasn't proposed. Six years is a
[22:23] Speaker 1: long time to be dating except for the fact that
[22:26] Speaker 1: they met in high school. They're still young and starting
[22:28] Speaker 1: their lives together. Marriage could be years off. Am I
[22:32] Speaker 1: the jerk for snapping at my sister that she'll choke
[22:35] Speaker 1: on her jealousy one day? I'm a 21-year-old woman with
[22:38] Speaker 1: two siblings. My sister is 24 and engaged while my
[22:41] Speaker 1: brother is 28 and married to my 25-year-old sister-in-law. Recently,
[22:46] Speaker 1: my parents hosted a family lunch to celebrate my sister's
[22:49] Speaker 1: engagement at their house. I went early to help set
[22:52] Speaker 1: up while my brother and sister-in-law arrived a little later,
[22:54] Speaker 1: with my sister and her fiancé arriving late. Everything was
[22:58] Speaker 1: going well until my sister got a text and pulled
[23:00] Speaker 1: me aside. She asked if I could go outside to
[23:03] Speaker 1: meet a friend of hers who was dropping something off
[23:05] Speaker 1: for her. I agreed. The something turned out to be
[23:08] Speaker 1: a big ball of pure happiness, a Saint Bernard dog
[23:12] Speaker 1: dressed in a cute little formal tie around his neck.
[23:15] Speaker 1: As adorable as he was, I couldn't bring him inside
[23:17] Speaker 1: because my sister-in-law is allergic. Her allergy isn't severe, but still,
[23:22] Speaker 1: everyone in the family knows about it. I asked my
[23:24] Speaker 1: sister's friend to wait while I talked to her, but
[23:26] Speaker 1: the friend didn't wait. I texted my sister that I
[23:29] Speaker 1: couldn't bring the dog inside. She replied that it was fine,
[23:32] Speaker 1: telling me to bring him in because he was a
[23:34] Speaker 1: surprise and the newest addition to the family. I insisted
[23:37] Speaker 1: I couldn't, so I texted my brother, not knowing what
[23:40] Speaker 1: to do, while standing in the driveway with a dog
[23:42] Speaker 1: that wouldn't stop licking my leg. Inside, my brother pulled
[23:46] Speaker 1: my sister aside and asked her not to bring the
[23:48] Speaker 1: dog in, reminding her that his wife is allergic. My
[23:51] Speaker 1: sister refused, saying it was an open space and that
[23:54] Speaker 1: my sister-in-law would be fine. My brother then shared the
[23:57] Speaker 1: news that my sister-in-law is pregnant. I already knew, but
[24:00] Speaker 1: they were waiting until she passed the first trimester to
[24:03] Speaker 1: tell everyone. My sister, still determined, came outside, dragged the
[24:07] Speaker 1: dog in, and pulled me along despite my resistance. My brother,
[24:11] Speaker 1: seeing this, excused himself and left with my sister-in-law. We
[24:15] Speaker 1: tried to continue the lunch, but things were really awkward.
[24:18] Speaker 1: When my sister and her fiancé cut the cake, she
[24:20] Speaker 1: grabbed her glass of champagne and made a toast. Her
[24:23] Speaker 1: toast turned into a ramble about how selfish my brother
[24:26] Speaker 1: and his wife were saying they couldn't let her have
[24:29] Speaker 1: one day to herself and had to overshadow her engagement celebration.
[24:33] Speaker 1: She added that they weren't the first or last couple
[24:35] Speaker 1: to get pregnant. My parents both tried to shush her
[24:38] Speaker 1: but she kept going, calling my sister-in-law an attention seeker
[24:42] Speaker 1: who just had to give the family the first grandchild.
[24:45] Speaker 1: At that point, I'd had enough. I told my sister
[24:47] Speaker 1: that green wasn't a good look on her and that
[24:50] Speaker 1: she was going to choke on her jealousy one day.
[24:52] Speaker 1: Then I got up and left. She called me a
[24:55] Speaker 1: jerk as I walked out. Later, my mom called and
[24:58] Speaker 1: said that what I said was a bit harsh, even
[25:00] Speaker 1: though my sister had been harsher. She suggested that the
[25:03] Speaker 1: three of us siblings talk it out after things settle down.
[25:06] Speaker 1: My dad is staying neutral and I haven't heard from
[25:09] Speaker 1: any other relatives who were at the lunch. Am I
[25:11] Speaker 1: the jerk? Not the jerk. Yeah, I'm not invited, but
[25:16] Speaker 1: I'm wearing white to that wedding. My Karen daughter demands
[25:20] Speaker 1: my $ 2, 000 mattress. My partner, 59, male, and I, 53, female,
[25:26] Speaker 1: have a four-bedroom house and one of his kids, 25-year-old daughter,
[25:29] Speaker 1: is still living at home. She's about to move out
[25:32] Speaker 1: and she's been searching for nearby apartments. While she's been
[25:35] Speaker 1: looking at unfurnished options since there aren't any furnished apartments available,
[25:39] Speaker 1: we haven't had any discussion about what items she might
[25:41] Speaker 1: take from the house. Recently, she applied for an apartment
[25:45] Speaker 1: she thought would work for her. On the way back home,
[25:47] Speaker 1: she brought up the idea of taking some things from
[25:49] Speaker 1: the bedroom upstairs. including a very expensive mattress that was
[25:53] Speaker 1: a gift from someone my partner used to work for.
[25:56] Speaker 1: She's hesitant to buy a new mattress because she's uncertain
[25:58] Speaker 1: about her plans for the coming year. I initially declined
[26:01] Speaker 1: her request, explaining that moving such a large and valuable
[26:05] Speaker 1: mattress up and down the stairs could damage it. I
[26:08] Speaker 1: suggested an alternative mattress from a different bed, which would
[26:11] Speaker 1: be easier to move, but she found it uncomfortable. I
[26:14] Speaker 1: must admit, it's not in the best condition as she
[26:16] Speaker 1: has used it for several years. To find a compromise,
[26:19] Speaker 1: I proposed buying a new mattress that she could use
[26:22] Speaker 1: for her new place. If she decides she doesn't want
[26:24] Speaker 1: it later, we could use it as a replacement for
[26:26] Speaker 1: the uncomfortable one. Or if she decides to keep it,
[26:29] Speaker 1: she could purchase it from us. I even mentioned that
[26:32] Speaker 1: I'd probably waive the cost if it came down to that,
[26:34] Speaker 1: but I wanted to set realistic expectations. However, she remains
[26:38] Speaker 1: insistent on having the expensive mattress and doesn't understand why
[26:41] Speaker 1: I won't just give it to her. Am I being
[26:43] Speaker 1: unreasonable for wanting to keep a nice mattress for our
[26:46] Speaker 1: spare bed? She was offered a new mattress at the
[26:49] Speaker 1: inn for free and refused because she wants the expensive one.
[26:53] Speaker 1: Not the jerk. Neighbor of property I work at tries
[26:56] Speaker 1: to get free service. I own a small landscaping business
[27:00] Speaker 1: with my husband. This morning we showed up to our
[27:02] Speaker 1: job with our truck and trailer for a day of
[27:05] Speaker 1: weeding at a long neglected property. It's trash day in
[27:08] Speaker 1: the neighborhood and in order to back the trailer in
[27:10] Speaker 1: I have to get out of the truck to move
[27:12] Speaker 1: two garbage cans that are in the way. I move
[27:14] Speaker 1: them both one foot off the road with the intention
[27:17] Speaker 1: of moving them back afterwards. I assume they were out
[27:19] Speaker 1: in the road for visibility purposes. I then move to
[27:23] Speaker 1: behind the trailer and guide my husband into the parking spot.
[27:26] Speaker 1: It's very narrow. Husband gets out of the truck and
[27:28] Speaker 1: we both look at the ocean as the waves are
[27:30] Speaker 1: massive due to the impending storm, at least 10 feet high.
[27:34] Speaker 1: Surfers are wiping out all over the place and it's
[27:36] Speaker 1: quite a sight. I counted over 60 surfers on my
[27:39] Speaker 1: lunch break. 10 seconds into looking at the ocean, the
[27:42] Speaker 1: neighbor comes out screaming at us about how the garbage
[27:45] Speaker 1: truck driver can't see the cans and asked what I
[27:47] Speaker 1: was doing. When I say he was screaming, I mean
[27:50] Speaker 1: he was screaming. This guy chose violence and was looking
[27:53] Speaker 1: to intimidate. I calmly responded that I was about to
[27:56] Speaker 1: move the cans back, I was just looking at the
[27:59] Speaker 1: ocean first. He seemed slightly embarrassed and muttered something like,
[28:02] Speaker 1: I'll move them, don't bother. One hour later, this guy
[28:06] Speaker 1: catches my husband going to the truck and asks if
[28:09] Speaker 1: he can put his lawn clippings in our trailer and
[28:11] Speaker 1: take them to the dump with our other debris. No apology,
[28:14] Speaker 1: no introductions, and like nothing had happened. My husband was
[28:17] Speaker 1: taken aback in the moment and said yes, even though
[28:20] Speaker 1: this is something we charge for. 30 minutes after that,
[28:23] Speaker 1: he walks onto the property we're working at and says
[28:26] Speaker 1: that he just pruned a juniper and asks if he
[28:28] Speaker 1: can put those clippings in there too. I respond, sure,
[28:32] Speaker 1: if you throw us a 20. He laughs and says,
[28:35] Speaker 1: are you kidding? You're going to the dump anyway, right?
[28:38] Speaker 1: To which I respond, yes, and not only do they
[28:41] Speaker 1: charge us by weight, but this is our job, and
[28:43] Speaker 1: taking debris to the dump is a service we offer.
[28:46] Speaker 1: We'll do it for $ 20. He laughs again and says,
[28:49] Speaker 1: they charge by weight? My debris weighs nothing. He huffs
[28:53] Speaker 1: off and comes back with the $ 20. He was so mad,
[28:56] Speaker 1: he wouldn't even look at me when he handed me
[28:57] Speaker 1: the money. My guess, he thought we'd just say yes,
[29:01] Speaker 1: and he'd already cut the juniper before asking, then didn't
[29:04] Speaker 1: have a way of getting rid of it. Couldn't put
[29:06] Speaker 1: it in one of his two BMWs and didn't want
[29:08] Speaker 1: it laying around his $ 4 million beach house. Another short
[29:11] Speaker 1: while later, he catches my husband and tries to find
[29:14] Speaker 1: out which dump we go to because the one he
[29:16] Speaker 1: suspects we go to doesn't charge by weight. Wrong dump.
[29:20] Speaker 1: And also, it doesn't matter. We charge what we charge.
[29:23] Speaker 1: My guy, you don't have to say yes to us
[29:25] Speaker 1: taking your debris. We decide our rates and this is
[29:28] Speaker 1: what we charge. Take it or leave it. You came
[29:30] Speaker 1: to us. We're not going door to door asking for
[29:33] Speaker 1: people's yard clippings. There's a minimum charge of $ 25 at
[29:36] Speaker 1: the dump, no matter how much you have. Just save
[29:38] Speaker 1: the $ 5 and the trip to the dump and leave
[29:41] Speaker 1: us alone. Give me a parking ticket for a spot
[29:44] Speaker 1: I paid for? I dare you. About 10 or so
[29:48] Speaker 1: years ago, I went to a concert an hour away
[29:50] Speaker 1: from me in Indianapolis. Decided to make a day of
[29:53] Speaker 1: it going to several museums and spots around the city.
[29:56] Speaker 1: Each time paying for parking in a garage for two
[29:58] Speaker 1: or so hours then going to meander around the area. Finally,
[30:02] Speaker 1: I go park close to the venue and paid for
[30:04] Speaker 1: parking until the time it was free. In total, I
[30:07] Speaker 1: probably paid $ 40 to $ 50 for parking throughout the day,
[30:10] Speaker 1: enjoyed the concert, but come back to a parking ticket
[30:13] Speaker 1: on my car. I think, this is odd, but I'm
[30:16] Speaker 1: tired and chalk it up to a mistake, but I
[30:18] Speaker 1: decide to take photos of my parking spot, both spots
[30:21] Speaker 1: on either side were taken, and all the signage and
[30:24] Speaker 1: head home for the evening, figuring I would sort it
[30:26] Speaker 1: out in the morning. The next morning I review the ticket,
[30:30] Speaker 1: the photo of my spot and my parking receipt. The
[30:32] Speaker 1: ticket did not line up to the spot my car
[30:34] Speaker 1: was located in and my receipt shows that I had
[30:37] Speaker 1: valid parking at the time of the ticket. So I
[30:39] Speaker 1: submit an appeal thinking this will be easy, it's obviously
[30:42] Speaker 1: a mistake. The appeal was denied. The ticket was for
[30:46] Speaker 1: the spot that was not paid for, ergo it stood.
[30:49] Speaker 1: I called the office and the lady said they did
[30:51] Speaker 1: not make a mistake as my receipt showed that I
[30:54] Speaker 1: paid for spot X1 and the ticket was for spot X.
[30:58] Speaker 1: I asked about the photo proof that my car was
[31:00] Speaker 1: in spot X1. She said, Well, you could have moved
[31:04] Speaker 1: the car. Note that the parking receipt included my license
[31:07] Speaker 1: plate number and everything. I noticed that there were cars
[31:10] Speaker 1: in spots on either side of me and that the
[31:12] Speaker 1: entire street was full because of the concert. And honestly,
[31:15] Speaker 1: I don't think they bothered to look at the photo.
[31:17] Speaker 1: Even had that not been the case, I had proof
[31:20] Speaker 1: that my license plate had a paid parking spot. No
[31:22] Speaker 1: matter what, no dice. I'm feeling petty over this $ 25
[31:26] Speaker 1: parking ticket at this point. So I called Visa and
[31:29] Speaker 1: asked if I could retract the amount I paid for
[31:32] Speaker 1: the time that I had parked since it didn't count.
[31:34] Speaker 1: I submitted all the evidence and documentation to Visa. Visa,
[31:38] Speaker 1: and what was the greatest thing Visa has ever done
[31:40] Speaker 1: in my opinion, they agreed that if my parking receipt
[31:43] Speaker 1: and transaction number wasn't proof I had paid for parking,
[31:46] Speaker 1: then clearly I had paid for a service I did
[31:47] Speaker 1: not receive. And they extended my initial request of canceling
[31:51] Speaker 1: the one transaction to include all of the parking spots
[31:54] Speaker 1: I had paid for throughout the system that day, valued
[31:56] Speaker 1: at more than the parking ticket. Then they filed a
[31:59] Speaker 1: formal complaint on my behalf with a letter explaining why
[32:02] Speaker 1: they were refunding me. It would not have been nearly
[32:04] Speaker 1: as satisfying if I had not spent the entire day
[32:07] Speaker 1: playing tourist in the city and racking up a large
[32:09] Speaker 1: parking bill all with the same vendor. Do this next.
