[0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome to r slash pro revenge, where Karen dumps trash
[0:03] Speaker 1: in her neighbor's house and really ends up paying for it.
[0:06] Speaker 1: Karen neighbor dumped trash in my house, I got revenge.
[0:10] Speaker 1: In 2001, I had just moved to a quiet neighborhood
[0:13] Speaker 1: where my kids, who are 1 and 3, could play
[0:15] Speaker 1: safely outside and grow up with the other neighborhood kids.
[0:19] Speaker 1: It was also great for my 3 cats to finally
[0:21] Speaker 1: have the chance to roam around outside. After the first week,
[0:24] Speaker 1: we had our first garbage day. Everything was neatly packed
[0:27] Speaker 1: in closed bags and placed in our personal garbage container.
[0:31] Speaker 1: We had to put the container out by the roadside
[0:33] Speaker 1: with the rest of the street spins by 7am, so
[0:35] Speaker 1: that's what I did. Afterward, I started cleaning the house.
[0:39] Speaker 1: I had a white floor, by choice, because it was
[0:41] Speaker 1: easier to tell when it was truly clean. With crawling kids,
[0:44] Speaker 1: I mopped daily, and I was meticulous about cleanliness. Later,
[0:49] Speaker 1: after I ran some errands, I returned home, opened the
[0:51] Speaker 1: front door, and I was shocked. My entire hallway was
[0:55] Speaker 1: filled with unknown trash, broken glass, sharp metal lids, food scraps, cartons, plastics,
[1:01] Speaker 1: you name it. All of this had clearly been stuffed
[1:03] Speaker 1: through the mail slot. I noticed some neighbors looking at
[1:07] Speaker 1: me from their windows and doorsteps, clearly expecting something. They
[1:11] Speaker 1: knew more than they were letting on. After asking around,
[1:14] Speaker 1: I found out who had done it. One of the
[1:16] Speaker 1: neighbors further down the street had thrown the garbage into
[1:18] Speaker 1: my house with great enthusiasm. Something inside me just snapped,
[1:23] Speaker 1: and all sense of decency flew out the window. I
[1:25] Speaker 1: was absolutely fuming. I cleaned up the trash, placed my
[1:29] Speaker 1: kids in the living room, and then cleaned out the
[1:31] Speaker 1: cat litter box. Normally, I would throw the entire contents
[1:34] Speaker 1: into a bag, but this time I was more deliberate.
[1:38] Speaker 1: I carefully scooped out just the waste and divided them
[1:41] Speaker 1: into two small, flimsy bags, those thin ones that tear easily.
[1:45] Speaker 1: With the bags in hand, I marched down to the
[1:47] Speaker 1: neighbor's house. When she answered the door, she had a
[1:50] Speaker 1: smug grin on her face. The door opened wide enough
[1:53] Speaker 1: for me to get a good look at her spotless hallway.
[1:56] Speaker 1: There was a carpeted staircase to the right, the open
[1:58] Speaker 1: door to the living room on the left, and the
[2:00] Speaker 1: hall extended toward the back where the bathroom was. Everything
[2:04] Speaker 1: was pristine. Calmly, almost devilishly, I asked her if she
[2:08] Speaker 1: had been the one to shove that garbage through my
[2:10] Speaker 1: mail slot. Her response? A proud yes. She explained that
[2:15] Speaker 1: since I was new … She assumed the loose trash
[2:17] Speaker 1: around the containers had to be mine because before I
[2:20] Speaker 1: moved in, that never happened. That was the moment I
[2:23] Speaker 1: lost it. Now fuming, I made it very clear that
[2:27] Speaker 1: I wasn't the one responsible for the trash. I told
[2:30] Speaker 1: her that if she had any decency, she should have
[2:32] Speaker 1: spoken to me directly instead of jumping to conclusions and
[2:35] Speaker 1: putting my kids and pets at risk by stuffing garbage
[2:38] Speaker 1: through my door. Then with a twisted smile, I added,
[2:41] Speaker 1: since you like cleaning so much, here, please enjoy this.
[2:45] Speaker 1: and I threw the two bags into her hallway. One
[2:48] Speaker 1: bag hit the corner of the stairs, the other splattered
[2:51] Speaker 1: against the doorpost of the living room. Everything, literally everything,
[2:55] Speaker 1: was suddenly covered in it. Before turning on my heel
[2:58] Speaker 1: to leave, I gave her a final warning. If she
[3:01] Speaker 1: ever thought about doing something like that again, I would
[3:03] Speaker 1: break every single one of their windows. Everyone in the
[3:06] Speaker 1: neighborhood had seen and heard the entire scene. From that
[3:10] Speaker 1: day on, I never heard from that neighbor again, and
[3:12] Speaker 1: no one else ever tried to pull anything like that
[3:15] Speaker 1: on me. I still smile thinking about the look on
[3:17] Speaker 1: her face when those bags went flying. It was a
[3:20] Speaker 1: perfect mix of shock, fear, indignation, nausea, and despair. Am
[3:26] Speaker 1: I the jerk for wearing an over-the-top outfit to my
[3:29] Speaker 1: friend's birthday party and overshadowing the host? So last Friday night,
[3:33] Speaker 1: my friend, 24 male, who we'll call Peter, celebrated his
[3:37] Speaker 1: 28th birthday. His coworker, at least that's what he refers
[3:40] Speaker 1: to her as, April, offered to organize and host the party.
[3:44] Speaker 1: The dress code, as she put it, was your gothic best.
[3:48] Speaker 1: Peter loves anything morbid, so it fit his taste perfectly. Now,
[3:52] Speaker 1: I prioritize comfort over looks, which means I mostly wear
[3:55] Speaker 1: scrubs at work and sweats and hoodies when I'm out
[3:57] Speaker 1: and about. April decided to remind me multiple times in
[4:01] Speaker 1: an increasingly condescending tone to follow the dress code, so
[4:05] Speaker 1: I did just that. I wore a black velvet trouser
[4:08] Speaker 1: and waistcoat set with a white 18th century men's shirt,
[4:11] Speaker 1: a pirate shirt if you will. I made all of
[4:13] Speaker 1: these items completely myself from drafting the patterns to hand
[4:17] Speaker 1: sewing the shirt and even adding embroidered moths across the
[4:20] Speaker 1: back of the waistcoat. Now to the party itself. I
[4:24] Speaker 1: ended up arriving later than most people due to being
[4:26] Speaker 1: held up at work longer than expected. I had warned
[4:29] Speaker 1: both Peter and April about it. Peter said it was
[4:32] Speaker 1: no problem at all but I'd better show up. April
[4:35] Speaker 1: on the other hand left me on read. I arrived
[4:38] Speaker 1: 40 minutes late, greeted April, congratulated Peter and I gave
[4:42] Speaker 1: him his gift. Mocktails were served and pleasantries were exchanged.
[4:46] Speaker 1: Over the course of the night, I received a lot
[4:47] Speaker 1: of compliments on my outfit. My crafting skills were a
[4:50] Speaker 1: topic of conversation several times. It didn't help that whenever
[4:54] Speaker 1: someone asked where I got the suit or shirt, Peter
[4:56] Speaker 1: would loudly tell them how I made everything myself. I
[4:59] Speaker 1: remember being spun around a couple of times so people
[5:02] Speaker 1: could look at or touch the embroidery on the back.
[5:05] Speaker 1: Everyone seemed to be having a good time, or so
[5:07] Speaker 1: I thought. Over the weekend, April and her friends bombarded
[5:11] Speaker 1: my phone and social media with nasty messages. They called
[5:14] Speaker 1: me an attention seeker, said I came across as desperate,
[5:17] Speaker 1: that I ruined the party April had been planning for weeks,
[5:20] Speaker 1: and how dare I steal attention away from Peter and April.
[5:23] Speaker 1: You get the idea. I feel like I'm going insane.
[5:26] Speaker 1: Overshadowing anyone was never my intention, especially not my friend
[5:30] Speaker 1: at his own party. But all these comments are making
[5:32] Speaker 1: me rethink my choices. Am I the jerk here? I
[5:35] Speaker 1: really need some outside perspective. Could Peter be behind this?
[5:39] Speaker 1: I doubt that's the case. I've known the guy for
[5:42] Speaker 1: over 10 years and he's never had a problem with
[5:44] Speaker 1: people overshadowing him. He's not insecure and if he has
[5:47] Speaker 1: a problem with someone's actions, he'll say it. He wouldn't
[5:50] Speaker 1: send his co-workers' girlfriends to harass someone on his behalf.
[5:54] Speaker 1: Not the jerk. April clearly has a thing for Peter
[5:57] Speaker 1: and sees you as a threat. She's going to find
[5:59] Speaker 1: ways to criticize you no matter what. O.P., It probably
[6:03] Speaker 1: didn't help that Peter kept his hand on my back
[6:05] Speaker 1: for most of the evening. And when he got absolutely wasted,
[6:08] Speaker 1: he put his face in my hair. So, maybe it's
[6:12] Speaker 1: not just April's imagination that you're a threat to her
[6:15] Speaker 1: attempts to connect with Peter. OP. Honestly, the biggest threat
[6:19] Speaker 1: to that is Peter being ace, not me. April's behavior
[6:22] Speaker 1: is what's weird, not mine. Could Peter be demiromantic? His
[6:27] Speaker 1: behavior seems a little more than platonic. Keeping his arm
[6:30] Speaker 1: around you, smelling your hair. Those are often actions exhibited
[6:33] Speaker 1: by people towards a crush. April's definitely the problem here. Op.
[6:38] Speaker 1: According to him, he's ace. And to clarify, he wasn't
[6:41] Speaker 1: smelling my hair. It was more like rubbing his face
[6:44] Speaker 1: on the top of my head. He says he likes
[6:46] Speaker 1: how my hair feels. He's always playing with it, especially
[6:49] Speaker 1: when he's drunk. It's more of a texture thing knowing him. Update.
[6:53] Speaker 1: This morning, I showed Peter the post and all the
[6:56] Speaker 1: messages from April and her friends. I've never heard him
[6:58] Speaker 1: this angry. He said he'll deal with them. Turns out,
[7:02] Speaker 1: April is a pathological liar. She'd been telling everyone at
[7:05] Speaker 1: the office that she and Peter were in a relationship,
[7:08] Speaker 1: but keeping it low-key. She was also taking pictures of
[7:11] Speaker 1: him every time she walked by his office and showing
[7:13] Speaker 1: them to her friends as proof. Her friends thought I
[7:16] Speaker 1: was trying to steal her man. Funny thing is, they're
[7:19] Speaker 1: not even co-workers. April just greets clients at the front
[7:22] Speaker 1: desk of the firm where Peter works. Peter tore into
[7:26] Speaker 1: her and so did her boss, April's uncle, as well
[7:28] Speaker 1: as her coworkers. April ended up throwing a tantrum and
[7:31] Speaker 1: the police were called. April is currently on a 48-hour hold.
[7:36] Speaker 1: Peter is moving to work from home full-time. I've received
[7:40] Speaker 1: apologies from April's uncle, mom, and a few friends and coworkers.
[7:45] Speaker 1: My husband has been lying to me for years. I'm
[7:49] Speaker 1: 24 and my husband is 28. We met when I
[7:51] Speaker 1: was 20 and he was 24. We only dated for
[7:54] Speaker 1: eight months before getting engaged. My husband comes from a
[7:57] Speaker 1: very wealthy family. Four houses, farmland, full-time help, the works.
[8:02] Speaker 1: I wasn't poor growing up, but we were middle class
[8:05] Speaker 1: at best. When we first started dating, my husband didn't
[8:08] Speaker 1: tell me how wealthy his family was. In fact, he
[8:11] Speaker 1: told me the opposite. He made up a story about
[8:13] Speaker 1: growing up poor, claimed that both his parents had passed away,
[8:17] Speaker 1: and said he hadn't spoken to his sister in years.
[8:19] Speaker 1: After six months, we moved in together and I paid
[8:22] Speaker 1: for rent for the first couple of months because he
[8:24] Speaker 1: was unemployed and looking for a job after university. Two
[8:28] Speaker 1: weeks ago, I got a Facebook friend request from a
[8:30] Speaker 1: woman named Kathy. She had the same last name as
[8:33] Speaker 1: my husband so I accepted it, thinking she might be
[8:36] Speaker 1: a distant cousin. Naturally, I did what anyone would do
[8:39] Speaker 1: and I stalked her Facebook page. It didn't take long
[8:42] Speaker 1: for me to notice how much she resembled my husband.
[8:44] Speaker 1: The same nose, the same eyes … Her hair was
[8:47] Speaker 1: a different color but I figured she had dyed it red.
[8:50] Speaker 1: Something in my gut told me that this was his sister.
[8:53] Speaker 1: I let it go and I went to bed without
[8:55] Speaker 1: telling my husband. But the next day I received a
[8:57] Speaker 1: message from her. She explained that she was his sister
[9:00] Speaker 1: and had been wanting to meet me for years. She
[9:03] Speaker 1: mentioned that her brother had distanced himself from the family
[9:05] Speaker 1: a little before meeting me due to some family drama
[9:08] Speaker 1: that she didn't specify. We continued texting and that's when
[9:11] Speaker 1: I found out exactly what my husband had been hiding.
[9:14] Speaker 1: The biggest secret was, of course, the wealth. Even though
[9:18] Speaker 1: he had left his family, his parents had still been
[9:20] Speaker 1: giving him a monthly allowance until he secured a full-time
[9:23] Speaker 1: job about a year after we met. I had paid
[9:26] Speaker 1: for everything for months and even helped him find a job.
[9:29] Speaker 1: I missed important milestones like seeing my brother's wife give
[9:32] Speaker 1: birth because I paid for our rent that month and
[9:35] Speaker 1: airfare was too expensive. I cried about it for days
[9:38] Speaker 1: because my brother was my best friend growing up and
[9:40] Speaker 1: I couldn't be there for my nephew's birth. After finding
[9:43] Speaker 1: all this out, I told my husband I was going
[9:45] Speaker 1: on a spontaneous trip to see my nephew. I couldn't
[9:48] Speaker 1: stand being in the same room as him. I've been
[9:50] Speaker 1: at my brother's house for two weeks and I've started
[9:53] Speaker 1: reaching out to lawyers. However, I want to talk to
[9:55] Speaker 1: him first and see if there's any reasonable explanation for
[9:58] Speaker 1: what he did. I know real there isn't, but this
[10:01] Speaker 1: is my husband and I can't bear to imagine what
[10:03] Speaker 1: this all means. It's not about the money, I wouldn't
[10:06] Speaker 1: have cared if he was rich. I've always been brought
[10:09] Speaker 1: up to be independent with finances and to pay for
[10:11] Speaker 1: my own stuff, but I missed milestones in my life
[10:14] Speaker 1: and lived paycheck to paycheck for months supporting us while
[10:17] Speaker 1: he was getting a monthly allowance. What was he even
[10:19] Speaker 1: spending it on? Edit. Just to clarify, I know for
[10:23] Speaker 1: a fact that this is his sister. I've also confirmed
[10:25] Speaker 1: that she wasn't lying about the allowances. She sent me
[10:28] Speaker 1: screenshots of bank statements at my request and she even
[10:31] Speaker 1: contributed to a portion of his allowance for a while.
[10:33] Speaker 1: I'll speak to him, but how can I trust that
[10:35] Speaker 1: he won't lie to me about everything again? He told
[10:38] Speaker 1: me stories about growing up poor and being an orphan
[10:41] Speaker 1: caused him lots of issues, but the whole thing was
[10:43] Speaker 1: a lie. That's what hurts the most. Not the jerk.
[10:48] Speaker 1: I agree that finances are not the main problem here.
[10:51] Speaker 1: I would even argue that milestones are not the biggest issue.
[10:54] Speaker 1: The biggest issue is your entire relationship's foundation is a
[10:57] Speaker 1: lie and he wasn't even able to be honest about
[10:59] Speaker 1: having a family. I would sit him down and try
[11:02] Speaker 1: to understand the why and what other things he may
[11:05] Speaker 1: have been hiding. It would be very hard for me
[11:07] Speaker 1: to move past this. You definitely need to have a
[11:10] Speaker 1: talk with your husband so he can explain his side
[11:13] Speaker 1: of the story because right now it sounds horrible with
[11:15] Speaker 1: all the lies from the start. If he really did
[11:18] Speaker 1: receive the allowance and let you cry your heart out
[11:20] Speaker 1: about not being able to go see your family because
[11:22] Speaker 1: you paid for everything, all the while he received free
[11:25] Speaker 1: money from his parents, that really shows how little empathy
[11:28] Speaker 1: he has and that's definitely not showing of a good husband.
[11:31] Speaker 1: But maybe there's a reason for him to disown the family.
[11:34] Speaker 1: Maybe he didn't actually receive the money. Playing devil's advocate here.
[11:38] Speaker 1: Am I the jerk for asking a customer's kid to
[11:41] Speaker 1: not touch the drink machine? I'm 24 male, work at
[11:44] Speaker 1: a popular fast food restaurant. I've been here since this
[11:47] Speaker 1: location opened and I love it. My coworkers are great,
[11:50] Speaker 1: my boss is fantastic, and I've never had any problems
[11:53] Speaker 1: with customers. Until today. We have a self-serve drink machine
[11:57] Speaker 1: near the front of the store. Today, a family of
[11:59] Speaker 1: three came in. The mom, the dad, and their daughter,
[12:02] Speaker 1: who looked like she was about four or five. I
[12:04] Speaker 1: was the cashier for the day, and the dad came
[12:07] Speaker 1: up to place their order while the mom sat down
[12:09] Speaker 1: at the benches near the door, scrolling on her phone.
[12:11] Speaker 1: Their daughter, however, made a beeline for the drink station.
[12:15] Speaker 1: I noticed the girl was about to stick her hands
[12:16] Speaker 1: into the spigot for the iced tea, which is separate
[12:19] Speaker 1: from the soda machine. So I calmly said, without raising
[12:22] Speaker 1: my voice, Excuse me little one, could you please not
[12:25] Speaker 1: touch that? Immediately the mom looked up from her phone,
[12:28] Speaker 1: got defensive and yelled, Don't yell at my kid, I'm
[12:32] Speaker 1: right here, you could have just gotten my attention. Now
[12:35] Speaker 1: I get it, but I needed to stop her daughter
[12:37] Speaker 1: before she actually touched the spigot. It's a health hazard,
[12:40] Speaker 1: people drink from that machine and I have no idea
[12:42] Speaker 1: where her hands have been. Your entire family just came
[12:45] Speaker 1: in from outside. For all I know, she could have
[12:47] Speaker 1: had peanut butter residue on her hands and the next
[12:50] Speaker 1: person to use it could have gone into anaphylactic shock.
[12:53] Speaker 1: I didn't raise my voice at all. I just used
[12:55] Speaker 1: a gentle tone to prevent contamination. I apologized to the
[12:58] Speaker 1: mom and explained the situation, minus the part about being outside.
[13:02] Speaker 1: She wasn't having it and yelled again, saying she was
[13:05] Speaker 1: right there and that I shouldn't speak to her kid.
[13:08] Speaker 1: The dad was standing there at the register, just waiting
[13:10] Speaker 1: for this to finish so I could take his order.
[13:12] Speaker 1: I apologized again and then turned to the dad to proceed.
[13:16] Speaker 1: Once I turned away, the mom went back to her
[13:18] Speaker 1: phone with her daughter now sitting beside her, arm around
[13:21] Speaker 1: her shoulder. Am I the jerk? Should I have handled
[13:23] Speaker 1: things differently? I've already told my boss and after they left,
[13:27] Speaker 1: I disinfected and sanitized the spigot, even though I stopped
[13:30] Speaker 1: the girl before she could touch it. I didn't want
[13:32] Speaker 1: to do it while they were still there as I
[13:34] Speaker 1: feared the mom would have had another meltdown. Edit. Today
[13:38] Speaker 1: is my day off and I just got off the
[13:40] Speaker 1: phone with my boss. She reassured me that I'm not
[13:42] Speaker 1: in trouble. In fact, she called to tell me that
[13:44] Speaker 1: the mom came back to try and file a complaint.
[13:47] Speaker 1: This is secondhand from my boss, so some details might
[13:50] Speaker 1: not be exact, but here's what she told me. The
[13:52] Speaker 1: mom came in alone and tried to complain that I
[13:55] Speaker 1: screamed at her kid and frightened her. Luckily, the restaurant
[13:58] Speaker 1: has cameras with audio, so my boss played back the footage.
[14:01] Speaker 1: She said she had to max out the volume because
[14:04] Speaker 1: she could barely hear me over the store's generic background music.
[14:07] Speaker 1: After watching the video, my boss told the woman, So,
[14:10] Speaker 1: you want me to punish my worker for stopping your
[14:13] Speaker 1: kid from messing up all that iced tea? Because if
[14:15] Speaker 1: he hadn't, and she had successfully done so, I would
[14:18] Speaker 1: have made you pay for the iced tea that she ruined.
[14:21] Speaker 1: And she wasn't kidding. My boss would have done it. Plus,
[14:24] Speaker 1: we had just made that iced tea, so the container
[14:26] Speaker 1: was nearly full. It holds about 5 gallons. Apparently, the
[14:30] Speaker 1: mom's eyes went wide, and she quickly backpedaled, saying she'd
[14:33] Speaker 1: thank me the next time she saw me. Then she
[14:35] Speaker 1: left the store. My boss thought this whole thing was
[14:38] Speaker 1: ridiculous and called me to share the story. Now, looking back,
[14:41] Speaker 1: I kind of agree. I'm going to enjoy the rest
[14:44] Speaker 1: of my day off. Maybe I'll stop by the store
[14:46] Speaker 1: and buy my boss something nice. Lady gets her iPad
[14:50] Speaker 1: stolen and decides it should be everyone's problem. I work
[14:53] Speaker 1: as an administrator at an elementary school and last Monday morning,
[14:57] Speaker 1: a very agitated co-worker came asking for help. Apparently, someone
[15:01] Speaker 1: had broken into a mother's car and stolen her iPad
[15:04] Speaker 1: while she was dropping off her kid. That's really unfortunate.
[15:07] Speaker 1: Since I'm the only one with access to the surveillance footage,
[15:10] Speaker 1: I agreed to help. All I needed to know is
[15:12] Speaker 1: which car was hers and where it had been parked.
[15:15] Speaker 1: We both went outside to look for the mother so
[15:17] Speaker 1: I could ask her directly. When we found her, she
[15:19] Speaker 1: was yelling at a group of teachers, demanding the camera
[15:22] Speaker 1: footage and accusing the school of being horrible and full
[15:25] Speaker 1: of thieves. She was so upset that she refused to
[15:28] Speaker 1: speak with me and left in a rage. Honestly, I
[15:31] Speaker 1: thought her reaction was understandable given the situation. So I
[15:34] Speaker 1: went to her kid's teacher to get more details about
[15:36] Speaker 1: how the theft happened, and that's when things got really awkward.
[15:40] Speaker 1: The mom hadn't parked in our school parking lot, she
[15:42] Speaker 1: left her car out on the street to save time.
[15:45] Speaker 1: She left the car unlocked. The iPad, in a bright
[15:48] Speaker 1: pink case, was left in plain view on the passenger seat.
[15:52] Speaker 1: She never activated the Find My feature on the iPad.
[15:55] Speaker 1: Since this happened off school grounds, we didn't have any
[15:58] Speaker 1: clear footage of the incident. The best I could find
[16:01] Speaker 1: was her car in the distance. but the view was
[16:03] Speaker 1: partially blocked by passing traffic. I watched the whole 10-minute span,
[16:07] Speaker 1: from when they got out of the car to when
[16:09] Speaker 1: she stormed back and realized the iPad was gone. Several
[16:12] Speaker 1: people passed by during that time, but there was no
[16:14] Speaker 1: clear footage of the actual theft. I did notice one
[16:17] Speaker 1: blurry man who lingered by her car longer than anyone else,
[16:20] Speaker 1: so we pointed him out when we sent her the footage.
[16:23] Speaker 1: The mom was furious. She said the footage was useless
[16:26] Speaker 1: because she couldn't make out who the man was or
[16:28] Speaker 1: where he was going. Unfortunately, there wasn't anything else we
[16:31] Speaker 1: could do. She caused a huge fuss and even left
[16:34] Speaker 1: a bad Google review, accusing the school of covering up
[16:37] Speaker 1: for thieves. Apparently, she wanted us to pay for her loss.
[16:41] Speaker 1: It's been a week now and she's finally calmed down,
[16:43] Speaker 1: so no dramatic ending here, just me baffled by the
[16:47] Speaker 1: entitlement of someone who expects everyone else to cover for
[16:50] Speaker 1: her careless mistakes. Am I the jerk for calling my
[16:54] Speaker 1: coworker work sister after she called me her work husband
[16:57] Speaker 1: in front of everyone? Plus updates. I, 34 male, work
[17:01] Speaker 1: in a small office with about 30 people. One of
[17:04] Speaker 1: my coworkers, Mary, who's 35, and I have worked together
[17:07] Speaker 1: for 6 years. Our department consists of 6 people and
[17:10] Speaker 1: we frequently travel across the state to oversee government projects.
[17:14] Speaker 1: We travel in pairs and while my travel partner changes
[17:17] Speaker 1: based on the project, Mary and I are often assigned together.
[17:20] Speaker 1: We enjoy each other's company and my wife even likes her.
[17:23] Speaker 1: We've always had a healthy work relationship. Now onto the incident.
[17:27] Speaker 1: Yesterday we had a happy hour at the office after work.
[17:31] Speaker 1: Around 10 of us stayed to drink and chat. Mary
[17:33] Speaker 1: started talking about how much we've traveled together this past year,
[17:37] Speaker 1: poking fun at my travel habits, forgetting things in hotel rooms,
[17:40] Speaker 1: being sweaty at breakfast because I go to the hotel
[17:43] Speaker 1: gym beforehand. She was roasting me in good fun and
[17:46] Speaker 1: everyone was laughing. I joined in by sharing some funny
[17:49] Speaker 1: stories about her as well, agreeing that I can be
[17:51] Speaker 1: difficult to travel with sometimes. Then Mary came over, hugged
[17:55] Speaker 1: me tightly and said she loved me, calling me her
[17:58] Speaker 1: work husband. While it seemed innocent enough, she was a
[18:01] Speaker 1: bit drunk and the hug lasted longer than I was
[18:04] Speaker 1: comfortable with. I noticed a few people staring at us.
[18:07] Speaker 1: To defuse the situation, I gently took her hands off
[18:09] Speaker 1: my shoulder and I told her that she was my
[18:12] Speaker 1: work sister and that I loved to annoy her because
[18:14] Speaker 1: of it. That seemed to upset Mary. She walked back
[18:17] Speaker 1: to her desk and started crying quietly. I went over
[18:20] Speaker 1: to apologize but she told me how embarrassed she was
[18:23] Speaker 1: by the whole situation. She said she meant work husband
[18:26] Speaker 1: in a purely platonic way but by calling her work
[18:29] Speaker 1: sister I made her sound like a creep in front
[18:31] Speaker 1: of everyone. She was also upset that I had removed
[18:34] Speaker 1: her hands during the hug. I tried to explain that
[18:37] Speaker 1: I didn't like the work husband term and that I
[18:39] Speaker 1: noticed people giving weird looks when she said it so
[18:42] Speaker 1: I wanted to prevent any misunderstandings. We talked for a
[18:45] Speaker 1: while and she eventually calmed down, hugged me again and left.
[18:49] Speaker 1: I felt really guilty afterwards because I could understand her point.
[18:53] Speaker 1: I made it seem like she had crossed a line when,
[18:55] Speaker 1: in reality, she may have meant nothing by it. However,
[18:58] Speaker 1: I was uncomfortable in that moment and didn't want anyone
[19:01] Speaker 1: to get the wrong idea about our relationship. Now I'm
[19:03] Speaker 1: sitting here wondering if I was wrong to call her
[19:06] Speaker 1: work sister. I'm also worried because I embarrassed her in
[19:09] Speaker 1: front of everyone. Not the jerk. Too often, work spouses
[19:14] Speaker 1: end up being inappropriately involved. You were trying to avoid
[19:17] Speaker 1: rumors and work sister is a much better term. Not
[19:20] Speaker 1: the jerk. It's a red flag that she's so upset
[19:23] Speaker 1: about it. It clearly meant more to her than to you.
[19:26] Speaker 1: You may want to establish some boundaries moving forward. Update.
[19:30] Speaker 1: The next day at the office, things were predictably awkward
[19:33] Speaker 1: between Mary and I. She ignored me all morning and
[19:36] Speaker 1: I debated apologizing again. But after reading the comments on
[19:39] Speaker 1: my post, I realized I shouldn't have to apologize for
[19:42] Speaker 1: feeling uncomfortable. There were rumors circulating, and one of the
[19:45] Speaker 1: women in the office even asked me if I wanted
[19:47] Speaker 1: to talk about what had happened between Mary and I.
[19:50] Speaker 1: In the afternoon, Mary came into my office, closed the
[19:53] Speaker 1: door and started accusing me of being a jerk and
[19:55] Speaker 1: ignoring her. I asked her to sit down so we
[19:58] Speaker 1: could talk. She told me she felt humiliated and that
[20:01] Speaker 1: everyone had been staring at her all morning because of
[20:03] Speaker 1: what I did. I stood my ground and explained that
[20:06] Speaker 1: while I was fine with her roasting me, Calling me
[20:08] Speaker 1: her work husband and hugging me like that made the
[20:11] Speaker 1: situation awkward. She told me I was overreacting and should
[20:15] Speaker 1: know that she meant it as a joke. She insisted
[20:17] Speaker 1: that calling someone a work husband was normal, claiming it
[20:21] Speaker 1: just meant she knew me as well as a spouse would.
[20:23] Speaker 1: Because we travel so much together, she said she knows
[20:26] Speaker 1: intimate details about me, like how I behave outside of work.
[20:29] Speaker 1: I told her I was offended by the term because
[20:31] Speaker 1: I'm married and as a married man, I don't want
[20:34] Speaker 1: anyone to call me their husband in any capacity. I
[20:37] Speaker 1: also said she wouldn't understand because she's single, but the
[20:40] Speaker 1: term is disrespectful to my marriage. Mary tried to explain
[20:43] Speaker 1: again that I was misinterpreting her words. She went on
[20:46] Speaker 1: about how we have dinners together after work, how we
[20:49] Speaker 1: always eat breakfast together to plan our day, and how
[20:51] Speaker 1: she's seen me in my gym shorts. She even said
[20:54] Speaker 1: that she trusts me with secrets no one else knows
[20:56] Speaker 1: and that I'm the only man she can depend on.
[20:59] Speaker 1: At this point, I was getting frustrated. I told her
[21:01] Speaker 1: that I consider her a friend, but only my wife
[21:04] Speaker 1: knows me as intimately as she claims, and her assumptions
[21:07] Speaker 1: are delusional. I also said that if my actions made
[21:09] Speaker 1: her feel this way, maybe we need to rethink our friendship.
[21:13] Speaker 1: She became apologetic, saying she never meant to disrespect my wife.
[21:16] Speaker 1: She just wanted to move on from the situation, but
[21:19] Speaker 1: I made it clear I don't want to hear the
[21:20] Speaker 1: term work husband again. She tried to hug me once more,
[21:24] Speaker 1: but I stepped back and told her everything was fine.
[21:27] Speaker 1: That night, I told my wife about the situation. As expected,
[21:30] Speaker 1: my wife was upset with Mary and she hated the
[21:33] Speaker 1: term work husband. She asked if Mary had ever flirted
[21:36] Speaker 1: with me during our trips or if I thought she
[21:38] Speaker 1: had a crush on me. I assured her that I
[21:40] Speaker 1: had never felt that way and that Mary was probably
[21:43] Speaker 1: just being stubborn about the term. My wife advised me
[21:46] Speaker 1: to put some distance between Mary and myself and said
[21:48] Speaker 1: that if Mary ever crosses that line again, I should
[21:51] Speaker 1: report it to HR. I promise to keep my interactions
[21:54] Speaker 1: with Mary professional and to limit our time together outside
[21:56] Speaker 1: of work. My Karen sister-in-law stole my skincare products, ends
[22:01] Speaker 1: up ruining her skin. So I'm 17, male, and my sister-in-law,
[22:06] Speaker 1: who's 29, her family is hosting a family gathering. They're
[22:10] Speaker 1: big on family and they have room to invite literally everyone,
[22:13] Speaker 1: which includes me, my parents, my older sister, and me,
[22:17] Speaker 1: since we are technically family. Now I'm big on skincare.
[22:20] Speaker 1: I had horrible skin when I was 13, and it
[22:23] Speaker 1: started as a way to fix it. But even after
[22:25] Speaker 1: my skin got better, I just liked it. It keeps
[22:28] Speaker 1: my skin looking good, and I find it relaxing. I
[22:30] Speaker 1: packed my essentials for the two weeks that I would
[22:32] Speaker 1: be there. I'll admit, it was still quite a lot,
[22:35] Speaker 1: but it wasn't insane. Now the room I was staying in,
[22:38] Speaker 1: I was sharing with one of sister-in-law's nieces around my age.
[22:42] Speaker 1: The room has an en-suite bathroom. I put my things
[22:44] Speaker 1: on a shelf, made sure with the niece that I
[22:46] Speaker 1: wasn't taking up too much room. Sister-in-law came in to
[22:50] Speaker 1: check on us and saw all of my things. She
[22:52] Speaker 1: asked about some things I had since they were expensive brands.
[22:55] Speaker 1: She's made it a big point that she and her
[22:57] Speaker 1: family have a lot more money than my family over
[22:59] Speaker 1: the years. I told her I had saved and I
[23:02] Speaker 1: bought them myself. I do have a job. She asked
[23:05] Speaker 1: to use them and I said no because they were
[23:07] Speaker 1: expensive and I want them to last as long as possible.
[23:10] Speaker 1: She seemed annoyed but she just left after that. Over
[23:13] Speaker 1: the next few days, my sister-in-law was complaining that her
[23:16] Speaker 1: skin was dry and itchy. I didn't think anything of it.
[23:20] Speaker 1: Halfway through the stay, she came storming down the stairs
[23:23] Speaker 1: and threw a small spray bottle at me, asking why
[23:25] Speaker 1: I did this to her. I was confused and asked
[23:28] Speaker 1: what she meant. Turns out she's been going into the
[23:30] Speaker 1: bathroom that I share with her niece and using my skincare.
[23:34] Speaker 1: But she's been using what she thought was a spray
[23:36] Speaker 1: bottle of water at the end. But she's actually been
[23:39] Speaker 1: using a bottle of salt water which I have because
[23:41] Speaker 1: I have four pretty fresh ear piercings. At first, I
[23:44] Speaker 1: asked her why she's using my stuff. She said it's
[23:47] Speaker 1: her family's house so she can use it and I
[23:49] Speaker 1: told her no, it's my stuff and I said no.
[23:52] Speaker 1: She just reiterated her first point and then asked me
[23:55] Speaker 1: why I would trick her like this. I explained that
[23:58] Speaker 1: it's salt water for my ears but she just called
[24:00] Speaker 1: me a liar asking why I would have it on
[24:02] Speaker 1: my bathroom shelf next to the rest of my skincare stuff.
[24:05] Speaker 1: She then went on about how I purposely ruined her skin.
[24:09] Speaker 1: I again tried explaining myself. Sister-in-law then turns to my
[24:12] Speaker 1: mother and her mother. and said that she had asked
[24:15] Speaker 1: about my skincare and I had explained everything and I
[24:18] Speaker 1: said the bottle was water, which was total BS. She
[24:21] Speaker 1: only asked about my expensive ones. Her niece backed me up,
[24:25] Speaker 1: but sister-in-law called me a liar. Mother-in-law was upset and
[24:28] Speaker 1: said I'm horrible and that I'm jealous of my sister-in-law
[24:31] Speaker 1: and my mother said she's disappointed and embarrassed in me.
[24:34] Speaker 1: This then caused her and my dad to argue and
[24:36] Speaker 1: now I feel like crap. Sister-in-law's family and my mother
[24:39] Speaker 1: are ignoring me or being passive-aggressive And they even threw
[24:43] Speaker 1: out my salt water and won't let me make a
[24:45] Speaker 1: new batch and have stopped me when I try to.
[24:47] Speaker 1: I don't know what to do. Am I the jerk? Edit.
[24:51] Speaker 1: Some people are confused. This isn't my dad's family. This
[24:54] Speaker 1: is my brother's wife's family. Also, while salt water is
[24:58] Speaker 1: normally okay for your skin, daily exposure isn't. Plus, it
[25:01] Speaker 1: might not even be the salt water. Could very well
[25:04] Speaker 1: be that she just had a bad reaction to another product.
[25:07] Speaker 1: What works for one person might not work for another.
[25:09] Speaker 1: I just had a few people asking about that. Not
[25:13] Speaker 1: the jerk. What's wrong with this family? Don't use other
[25:16] Speaker 1: people's stuff. Don't eat other people's food. I tried a
[25:19] Speaker 1: mystery skincare product and now my skin is bad. Lucky
[25:22] Speaker 1: for her it wasn't some sort of other mix. Not
[25:25] Speaker 1: the jerk and take care of your piercings, even if
[25:28] Speaker 1: you have to make a fresh batch every night. That's
[25:30] Speaker 1: some serious business. You don't want an infection. It's infuriating
[25:34] Speaker 1: that her selfish tantrum is interfering directly with your healthcare.
[25:38] Speaker 1: Today I messed up by cancelling my roommate's favorite TV show.
[25:42] Speaker 1: This didn't happen today, but many, many years ago when
[25:45] Speaker 1: I was in college. My roommate was obsessed with one
[25:48] Speaker 1: particular TV show, which I was also a fan of,
[25:51] Speaker 1: but he was very into it. He joined different forums
[25:54] Speaker 1: and groups about it. He participated in chat rooms about it.
[25:57] Speaker 1: He was obsessed. At the time, it was up in
[26:00] Speaker 1: the air as to whether or not the show would
[26:01] Speaker 1: be cancelled. So, being an immature 19-year-old, I decided to
[26:05] Speaker 1: have a little fun with it. I had recently found
[26:08] Speaker 1: out about this service that would distribute anyone's article for free.
[26:12] Speaker 1: Knowing that my roommate had alerts set up for everything
[26:14] Speaker 1: to do with this show, I was fairly certain that
[26:16] Speaker 1: if anyone was going to see what I was about
[26:18] Speaker 1: to do, it would be him. I wrote up an
[26:21] Speaker 1: article announcing the cancellation of the show. I started it
[26:24] Speaker 1: off by making it sound very official and professional and
[26:27] Speaker 1: then deliberately threw some bizarre statements into the article, things
[26:31] Speaker 1: that would never appear in any official announcement. I looked
[26:34] Speaker 1: it over, sent it in and promptly forgot about it.
[26:37] Speaker 1: The next morning I got up, jumped in the shower
[26:39] Speaker 1: and started getting ready for class. I heard my roommate shout,
[26:43] Speaker 1: Oh no! I walked back into the room and asked,
[26:46] Speaker 1: What's going on? My roommate looked devastated. They cancelled it!
[26:51] Speaker 1: They actually cancelled it! They're idiots! I asked him why
[26:54] Speaker 1: they had done that. He proceeded to read the rest
[26:57] Speaker 1: of the article out loud. As he reached the bizarre statements,
[27:00] Speaker 1: he got a confused look on his face, held his
[27:02] Speaker 1: hand towards the screen and said, What is this crap?
[27:06] Speaker 1: I burst out laughing and my roommate realized he had
[27:09] Speaker 1: been had. He shook his head. You're a jerk. Seriously, dude,
[27:13] Speaker 1: how did you even get that out there? We had
[27:16] Speaker 1: a good laugh about it. He vowed to get me
[27:18] Speaker 1: back and I went off to class. Later that day,
[27:21] Speaker 1: I walked into our dorm and my roommate had a
[27:23] Speaker 1: huge grin on his face. Congratulations, dude, you're famous, he
[27:27] Speaker 1: said happily. What did you do? I asked. Oh, I
[27:31] Speaker 1: didn't do anything, he replied. This is all you're doing.
[27:35] Speaker 1: He sent me a link and told me to open
[27:37] Speaker 1: it up. The link opened up to a post on
[27:39] Speaker 1: one of the fan forums of the show. The subject
[27:42] Speaker 1: was the show's cancellation and the post was a direct
[27:45] Speaker 1: copy of my fake article. People were reacting with devastation
[27:49] Speaker 1: and pure outrage at the network's decision to cancel the show.
[27:52] Speaker 1: They had overlooked the bizarre statements and had taken the
[27:55] Speaker 1: fake article as an official cancellation of the show. I
[27:58] Speaker 1: couldn't believe that it had gone this far. I read
[28:01] Speaker 1: page after page of devastated fans mourning the demise of
[28:04] Speaker 1: their favorite show. After then, the mood shifted. The creator
[28:08] Speaker 1: of the show posted on the forum after he was
[28:10] Speaker 1: contacted by several fans. The post was along the lines of, Well,
[28:15] Speaker 1: I hope we're not cancelled because I'm at the office
[28:17] Speaker 1: and working. Now I'm fielding phone calls for my writers
[28:20] Speaker 1: asking if they still have jobs. Oh crap, I said.
[28:24] Speaker 1: My roommate burst out laughing. Oh, that's right, dude. Keep reading.
[28:28] Speaker 1: As I continued to read, the tide of the comments
[28:31] Speaker 1: turned from angry at the network to angry at whatever
[28:34] Speaker 1: jerk decided to pull this stunt. These people were out
[28:37] Speaker 1: for blood. They talked about tracking me down and getting me.
[28:41] Speaker 1: This was when I learned that my roommate was far
[28:43] Speaker 1: from the most devoted fan. At least he found it funny.
[28:46] Speaker 1: They wrote to both the network and the show creator
[28:49] Speaker 1: encouraging them to serve paperwork on the service I used
[28:52] Speaker 1: to release the article in order to find out my IP.
[28:55] Speaker 1: Which would have traced me to the college and likely
[28:57] Speaker 1: resulted in disciplinary if not legal action against me. I
[29:01] Speaker 1: spent the next two months thinking I was going to
[29:03] Speaker 1: get expelled or arrested. Meanwhile, my roommate just laughed at
[29:06] Speaker 1: me every time I got anxious and told me it
[29:09] Speaker 1: served me right. The following month, the fake article was
[29:12] Speaker 1: referenced by TV Guide and is still being mentioned on
[29:15] Speaker 1: both IMDB and Wikipedia pages for the show. As for me? Well,
[29:20] Speaker 1: I haven't spoken about this in many years and I'm
[29:22] Speaker 1: still choosing to use a throwaway because my regular account
[29:25] Speaker 1: has a bit too much of me on it. Am
[29:28] Speaker 1: I the jerk for telling my boyfriend that I don't
[29:30] Speaker 1: want his daughters in my apartment? I'm in a dilemma
[29:33] Speaker 1: here because I know that most people will think I'm callous,
[29:36] Speaker 1: but I don't think I am. Give me your honest opinion. I,
[29:39] Speaker 1: female 38, met my boyfriend, male 36, at a party
[29:43] Speaker 1: four years ago and we hit it off immediately. I
[29:46] Speaker 1: told him very early on that I'm child free because
[29:49] Speaker 1: I know that many would not be okay with this
[29:51] Speaker 1: and I don't want to lead anybody on. After a month,
[29:54] Speaker 1: he told me that he had two kids who are
[29:56] Speaker 1: 11 and 12 now. I freaked out because I didn't
[29:59] Speaker 1: know what to do. I liked him very much but
[30:01] Speaker 1: I didn't want to be a parental figure. He said
[30:04] Speaker 1: I didn't have to, he has shared custody with his
[30:06] Speaker 1: ex and me and him would meet on the weeks
[30:09] Speaker 1: that he doesn't have custody. Now he basically lives at
[30:12] Speaker 1: my place the weeks his daughters are with their mother.
[30:15] Speaker 1: We said we loved each other very early on and
[30:17] Speaker 1: we decided this arrangement worked for us and to break
[30:20] Speaker 1: up the moment it didn't work anymore. I could see
[30:23] Speaker 1: myself with him forever. I love him to bits. I
[30:25] Speaker 1: love our life together. I love missing him when he's
[30:28] Speaker 1: with his family. He proposed to me a month ago
[30:31] Speaker 1: and I didn't know what he meant, but he said
[30:33] Speaker 1: that we didn't need to get married, he just wanted
[30:35] Speaker 1: me to have a ring. I thought it was romantic. Anyway,
[30:38] Speaker 1: a week later, he took his girls to my place
[30:40] Speaker 1: for a weekend. His ex was sick and he didn't
[30:43] Speaker 1: want the girls to get sick too. I asked him
[30:46] Speaker 1: if he maybe wanted to be with his daughters instead,
[30:49] Speaker 1: but he said that he would miss me since it's
[30:51] Speaker 1: our week. I said okay. I've met his girls on
[30:54] Speaker 1: many occasions and they're lovely so I had no problems
[30:57] Speaker 1: more than I felt a bit awkward. Last week I
[31:00] Speaker 1: got home and he had dropped his girls off at
[31:02] Speaker 1: my apartment. They were in my closet trying on my
[31:04] Speaker 1: heels and clothes. I was freaking out so I called him.
[31:08] Speaker 1: He said, yeah, change of plans. He and his ex
[31:11] Speaker 1: switched so the girls are staying with us. When he
[31:14] Speaker 1: got home I told him I couldn't do this. If
[31:16] Speaker 1: he was having problems with our arrangement then I understand
[31:19] Speaker 1: but I still don't want kids at my place. He
[31:22] Speaker 1: called me the jerk because his girls have done nothing
[31:24] Speaker 1: and are polite, etc. He loved me and we're engaged.
[31:28] Speaker 1: Did I expect us to have two separate lives when
[31:30] Speaker 1: we've been together for four years and love each other?
[31:33] Speaker 1: I'm tired of these guys thinking I don't really mean
[31:35] Speaker 1: it when I say I don't want to have kids.
[31:37] Speaker 1: I love him and I do want to be with
[31:39] Speaker 1: him and I see our future when his girls are
[31:41] Speaker 1: old and left the home and we could live together
[31:44] Speaker 1: and even get married. But I don't think I'm being
[31:46] Speaker 1: the jerk. Yes, maybe our way is not traditional but
[31:49] Speaker 1: my love for him is no less for it. Update.
[31:53] Speaker 1: I've talked to my boyfriend, fiance, and we are ending things.
[31:57] Speaker 1: He's as devastated as I am, but I can't hurt
[31:59] Speaker 1: him anymore. I always thought you break up when the
[32:02] Speaker 1: love is gone, but now I know that's not how
[32:04] Speaker 1: life works. I've been naive. He's asking for a break
[32:07] Speaker 1: or to keep in touch, etc. I don't think this
[32:10] Speaker 1: will work. If we're going to get over each other,
[32:12] Speaker 1: I think we need to break clean. I don't know
[32:15] Speaker 1: how I'll manage. God give me strength. Thank you. If
