[0:00] Speaker 1: How Jack went out to seek his fortune, Written by
[0:04] Speaker 1: Flora Annie Steele. Once upon a time there was a
[0:10] Speaker 1: boy named Jack, and one morning he started to go
[0:14] Speaker 1: and seek his fortune. He hadn't gone very far before
[0:18] Speaker 1: he met a cat. Where are you going? Jack said
[0:22] Speaker 1: the cat. I'm going to seek my fortune. May I
[0:27] Speaker 1: go with you? Yes? Said Jack. The more the merrier,
[0:32] Speaker 1: and so on they went Jack and the cat. They
[0:36] Speaker 1: went a little father and they met a dog. Where
[0:40] Speaker 1: are you going? Jack said the dog. I'm going to
[0:44] Speaker 1: seek my fortune. May I go with you? Yes? Said Jack.
[0:50] Speaker 1: The more the merrier, and so on they went Jack,
[0:54] Speaker 1: the cat and the dog. They went a little farther
[0:58] Speaker 1: and they met a goat. Where are you going? Jack
[1:02] Speaker 1: said the goat. I'm going to seek my fortune. May
[1:06] Speaker 1: I go with you? Yes? Said Jack. The more the merrier,
[1:12] Speaker 1: and so on they went Jack, the cat, the dog,
[1:16] Speaker 1: and the goat. They went a little father and they
[1:20] Speaker 1: met a bull. Where are you going? Jack said the bull,
[1:25] Speaker 1: I'm going to seek my fortune. May I go with you? Yes?
[1:30] Speaker 1: Said Jack. The more the merrier, and so on they
[1:34] Speaker 1: went Jack, the cat, the dog, the goat and the bull.
[1:41] Speaker 1: They went a little father and they met a rooster.
[1:45] Speaker 1: Where are you going, Jack, said the rooster. I'm going
[1:48] Speaker 1: to seek my fortune. May I go with you? Yes,
[1:53] Speaker 1: said Jack. The more the merrier, And so on they
[1:57] Speaker 1: went Jack, the cat, the dog, the goat, the bull,
[2:03] Speaker 1: and the rooster. And they went on jiggilty chalting till
[2:07] Speaker 1: it was about dark, and it was time to think
[2:10] Speaker 1: of someplace where they could spend the night. Now, after
[2:14] Speaker 1: a bit they came in sight of a house, and
[2:17] Speaker 1: Jack told his companions to keep still while he went
[2:20] Speaker 1: up and looked in through the window to see if
[2:23] Speaker 1: all was safe. And he saw through the window a
[2:26] Speaker 1: band of robbers seated at a table, counting over great
[2:30] Speaker 1: bags of gold. That gold shall be mine, said Jack
[2:34] Speaker 1: to himself, I have found my fortune already. Then he
[2:39] Speaker 1: went back and told his companions to wait till he
[2:42] Speaker 1: gave the word, and then to make all the noise
[2:45] Speaker 1: they possibly could in their own fashion. So when they
[2:48] Speaker 1: were already, Jack gave the word, and the cat mewed,
[2:53] Speaker 1: and the dog barked, and the goat bleated, and the
[2:56] Speaker 1: bull bellowed, and the rooster crowed, and all together they
[3:00] Speaker 1: made such a terrific hubbub that the robbers jumped up
[3:05] Speaker 1: in a fright and ran away, leaving their gold on
[3:08] Speaker 1: the table. So after a good laugh, Jack and his
[3:12] Speaker 1: companions went in and took possession of the house and
[3:16] Speaker 1: the gold. Now Jack was a wise boy, and he
[3:20] Speaker 1: knew that the robbers would come back in the dead
[3:22] Speaker 1: of the night to get their gold. And so when
[3:25] Speaker 1: it came time to go to bed, he put the
[3:27] Speaker 1: cat in the rocking chair, and he put the dog
[3:30] Speaker 1: under the table, and he put the goat upstairs, and
[3:34] Speaker 1: he put the bull in the cellar, and made the
[3:36] Speaker 1: rooster fly up onto the roof. Then he went to bed. Now,
[3:41] Speaker 1: sure enough, in the dead of the night, the robbers
[3:44] Speaker 1: sent one man back to the house to look after
[3:47] Speaker 1: their money. But before long he came back in a
[3:50] Speaker 1: great fright and told them a fearsome tale. I went
[3:55] Speaker 1: back to the house, said he, and went in and
[3:57] Speaker 1: tried to sit down in the rocking chair. And there
[4:01] Speaker 1: was an old woman knitting there, and she, oh, my,
[4:05] Speaker 1: stuck her knitting needles into me. That was the cat,
[4:09] Speaker 1: you know. Then I went to the table to look
[4:12] Speaker 1: after the money, but there was a shoemaker under the table,
[4:16] Speaker 1: and my, how he stuck his all into me. That
[4:20] Speaker 1: was the dog, you know. So I started to go upstairs,
[4:24] Speaker 1: but there was a man up there threshing, and goody,
[4:28] Speaker 1: he knocked me down with his flail. That was the goat,
[4:32] Speaker 1: you know. Then I started to go down to the cellar,
[4:35] Speaker 1: but oh dear me, there was a man down there
[4:40] Speaker 1: chopping wood, and he knocked me up, and he knocked
[4:44] Speaker 1: me down, just terrible with his axe. That was the bull,
[4:49] Speaker 1: you know. But I shouldn't have minded all that if
[4:53] Speaker 1: I hadn't been for an awful little fellow on the
[4:56] Speaker 1: top of the house by the kitchen Chimney kept a
[5:00] Speaker 1: hollering and hollering, cook him in a stew, cook him
[5:04] Speaker 1: in a stew, cook him in a stew, And that,
[5:08] Speaker 1: of course, was the cocker doodle Doo. Then the robbers
[5:12] Speaker 1: agreed that they would rather lose their gold than meet
[5:15] Speaker 1: with such a fate, so they made off, and Jack
[5:18] Speaker 1: next morning went gaily home with his booty, and each
[5:23] Speaker 1: of the animals carried a portion of it. The cat
[5:26] Speaker 1: hung a bag on its tail, the dog on his collar,
[5:30] Speaker 1: the goat and the bull on their horns. But Jack
[5:32] Speaker 1: made the rooster carry a golden guinea in its beak
[5:36] Speaker 1: to prevent it from calling all the time cock a
[5:39] Speaker 1: doodle Do cook him in a stew,
