[0:00] Speaker 1: Good morning, this is Send7, world news in 7 minutes.
[0:05] Speaker 1: I'm Ben Mallett, today is Wednesday, the 28th of October, 2026.
[0:10] Speaker 1: Starting in the Americas, in Brazil. Flavio Bolsonaro's Liberal Party
[0:25] Speaker 1: has conceded defeat in run-off elections held this week. Bolsonaro
[0:31] Speaker 1: himself has not conceded defeat and is currently missing after
[0:37] Speaker 1: failing to hand his passports to police as part of
[0:42] Speaker 1: an investigation into money laundering. Reuters has reported that Bolsonaro
[0:48] Speaker 1: is fleeing to the United States. United States President Donald
[0:54] Speaker 1: Trump has said the elections look to have been rigged,
[0:58] Speaker 1: but has offered no evidence to support his claim. Brazil's
[1:02] Speaker 1: presidential election was won by left-wing candidate Lula da Silva,
[1:07] Speaker 1: who will now serve his fourth term as president. Venezuela's
[1:13] Speaker 1: opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, has been met by large
[1:18] Speaker 1: crowds as she returns to Venezuela. for the first time
[1:22] Speaker 1: in almost a year. Machado had been living in the
[1:26] Speaker 1: United States since January 2026. Tens of thousands of Venezuelans
[1:33] Speaker 1: gathered to celebrate Machado's return. Machado has called for new
[1:39] Speaker 1: presidential elections soon, although the US says that Venezuela is
[1:44] Speaker 1: not ready for elections. El Salvador has sent 1,000 soldiers
[1:51] Speaker 1: into neighbouring Haiti. El Salvador had previously sent 124 soldiers
[1:58] Speaker 1: to help suppress Haitian gangs as part of a United
[2:02] Speaker 1: Nations mission. A security official in Haiti says that this
[2:07] Speaker 1: latest deployment of 1,000 soldiers is in response to four
[2:13] Speaker 1: Salvadoran soldiers going missing in Haiti. Salvadoran President Nayib Ukele
[2:19] Speaker 1: says that the soldiers had been ambushed by Haitian gangs
[2:23] Speaker 1: in the capital Port-au-Prince. Africa Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lisu
[2:32] Speaker 1: has begun a hunger strike whilst in prison. Lisu was
[2:36] Speaker 1: charged with treason last year. Lisu is protesting the fact
[2:41] Speaker 1: that he is not being given access to his lawyers.
[2:46] Speaker 1: In Ethiopia, at least 60 people have been killed in
[2:51] Speaker 1: the Oromia region. All of those killed were Christians. The
[2:56] Speaker 1: Oromia regional government blames local rebel groups for the killings,
[3:01] Speaker 1: whilst local rebel groups have accused the regional government of
[3:06] Speaker 1: carrying out the attack. Asia Israel voted in parliamentary elections yesterday.
[3:15] Speaker 1: The vote has been described as a fateful moment by
[3:20] Speaker 1: current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with many seeing the vote
[3:24] Speaker 1: as a decision on how to continue Israel's ongoing conflicts
[3:29] Speaker 1: in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran. Israel's election committee has said
[3:35] Speaker 1: that this election has had the fastest rise in voter
[3:39] Speaker 1: turnout of any election on record. The main rival to
[3:44] Speaker 1: Netanyahu's right-wing coalition in this election is Gadi Eisenkot, a
[3:49] Speaker 1: military ex-chief of staff. Eisenkot has promised to destroy the
[3:55] Speaker 1: military and political power of Hamas if elected. As of
[4:00] Speaker 1: the time of recording, it is unclear who will succeed
[4:04] Speaker 1: in Israel's elections, as polls show no clear majority for
[4:09] Speaker 1: any party. In China, a number of companies have ended
[4:16] Speaker 1: their sponsorships with French footballer Kylian Mbappé over his comments
[4:21] Speaker 1: about China's former leader. In a now-deleted video, Mbappé was
[4:27] Speaker 1: commenting on memes linked to his nickname of The Dictator.
[4:33] Speaker 1: One meme had cropped an image of Mbappé over former
[4:37] Speaker 1: Chinese leader Mao Zedong, Mbappé referred to Mao as some
[4:42] Speaker 1: guy and a dictator. Some Chinese brands, such as Mengyu,
[4:48] Speaker 1: say they are ending all sponsorships with Mbappé because of
[4:52] Speaker 1: his comments about Mao. Mbappé has since apologised for his comments.
[4:58] Speaker 1: India has evacuated thousands of people due to an incoming cyclone.
[5:04] Speaker 1: Cyclone Arnab formed on Monday in the Bay of Bengal. 50,000
[5:09] Speaker 1: people along India's eastern coast have been evacuated so far
[5:14] Speaker 1: to avoid the cyclone. Europe. Russian President Vladimir Putin was
[5:23] Speaker 1: phoned by the leaders of Finland and Norway yesterday. Finnish
[5:28] Speaker 1: President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stue
[5:32] Speaker 1: said that they spoke to Putin for 90 minutes to
[5:36] Speaker 1: discuss the Russia-Ukraine war. Stubb said that they voiced their
[5:41] Speaker 1: support for Ukraine and the need to de-escalate the war.
[5:46] Speaker 1: Most European leaders have refused to talk with President Putin
[5:51] Speaker 1: since the Russia-Ukraine war began in 2022. In France, a
[5:58] Speaker 1: law which could see rioters paying large fines has been
[6:02] Speaker 1: criticised by some rights groups. The proposed law could force
[6:07] Speaker 1: rioters to pay € 10, 000 for damage caused by their rioting.
[6:13] Speaker 1: Some lawyers have said that this law could lead to
[6:17] Speaker 1: peaceful protesters being punished. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has rejected
[6:23] Speaker 1: these criticisms, saying the new law would encourage a joint responsibility.
[6:29] Speaker 1: And in the United Kingdom … Footballer Harry Kane has
[6:34] Speaker 1: won the Ballon d'Or Prize for Best Male Footballer in 2026.
[6:40] Speaker 1: Kane is the first Englishman to win the prize since
[6:43] Speaker 1: Michael Owen won in 2001. Kane, who plays for German
[6:49] Speaker 1: club Bayern Munich and captains the England football team, scored
[6:53] Speaker 1: 73 goals for club and country last season. The Ballon
[6:58] Speaker 1: d'Or for best female footballer went to Spain and Barcelona
[7:02] Speaker 1: player Alexia Petelas. In his acceptance speech, Kane thanked his
[7:07] Speaker 1: teammates and said this win was massive for England.
[7:12] Speaker 2: I think it's massive for England, for our country. It's
[7:16] Speaker 2: been too long. We have so many incredible English players.
[7:20] Speaker 2: To put us back on the map and put us
[7:21] Speaker 2: here with this trophy, I'm extremely proud.
[7:23] Speaker 1: That's Seal World News in seven minutes. If you enjoy
