[0:00] Speaker 1: Good morning, this is Send7, world news in 7 minutes.
[0:06] Speaker 1: I'm Ben Mallett, today is Wednesday, the 26th of August, 2026.
[0:10] Speaker 1: Starting in the Americas. Canada has announced tariffs on imports
[0:26] Speaker 1: from the United States, which will affect 700 products. The
[0:32] Speaker 1: tariffs will take effect from the 8th of September. These
[0:37] Speaker 1: tariffs are a response to the tariffs that US President
[0:41] Speaker 1: Donald Trump will apply to $ 20 billion worth of Canadian
[0:46] Speaker 1: products entering the US. The tariffs from both countries are
[0:52] Speaker 1: as high as 50% on some goods, such as steel
[0:56] Speaker 1: and clothing. Canada's finance minister, François-Philippe Champagne, says that the
[1:02] Speaker 1: tariffs imposed by the U.S. are uneconomic, unfair, and ultimately unacceptable.
[1:10] Speaker 2: The terms proposed by the U.S. administration were uneconomic, unfair,
[1:15] Speaker 2: and ultimately unacceptable. They ask too much of Canada. and
[1:19] Speaker 2: offered too little in return. Canada must respond, and today
[1:23] Speaker 2: we are. Today I'm announcing that Canada will match the
[1:27] Speaker 2: United States tariffs, dollar for dollar, rate for rate.
[1:32] Speaker 1: In the US, Ghislaine Maxwell has had her appeal against
[1:38] Speaker 1: her 20-year prison sentence rejected by a US judge. Maxwell
[1:43] Speaker 1: was sentenced to 20 years in prison for her role
[1:47] Speaker 1: in the sexual abuses committed by Jeffrey Epstein. Maxwell also
[1:53] Speaker 1: appealed against her sentence in 2021, but claimed that new
[1:59] Speaker 1: evidence would find her sentence unlawful. Judge Paul Engelmayer rejected
[2:04] Speaker 1: Maxwell's claims and said that most were frivolous. Also in
[2:11] Speaker 1: the US, Country singer Dolly Parton has died at the
[2:21] Speaker 1: age of 80. Parton's death was confirmed yesterday by her family.
[2:26] Speaker 2: In Haiti, a raid by an armed gang has led
[2:27] Speaker 2: to 47 deaths. The attack took place in a commune.
[2:29] Speaker 1: Called Kenscoff, which is only minutes away from a police station.
[2:47] Speaker 1: Local residents claim that police officers failed to protect those
[2:52] Speaker 1: who were killed. Ken Scoff has been targeted by gang
[2:56] Speaker 1: violence dozens of times since 2025. Brazil has fined the
[3:02] Speaker 1: owner of social media site TikTok for violating the country's
[3:08] Speaker 1: general data protection law. ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok,
[3:13] Speaker 1: will be forced to pay more than $ 29 million and
[3:18] Speaker 1: delete data belonging to teenagers. Brazil's Data Protection Authority says
[3:25] Speaker 1: that the personal data of teenagers was being processed by
[3:29] Speaker 1: TikTok without a legal basis. Asia Iran says it is
[3:37] Speaker 1: fully prepared for a new wave of economic sanctions being
[3:42] Speaker 1: threatened by the US. The US has also threatened Iran's
[3:47] Speaker 1: trading partners, which include China, unless they follow the being
[3:52] Speaker 1: proposed by the US. China has criticised these sanctions as
[3:58] Speaker 1: being illegal and unilateral. The US has referred to its
[4:03] Speaker 1: latest sanctions as Economic D-Day in reference to a major
[4:08] Speaker 1: victory from World War II. In China and Taiwan, heavy
[4:14] Speaker 1: rains caused by a typhoon have led to severe flooding.
[4:19] Speaker 1: More than 54,000 people have been relocated from China's Guangxi
[4:25] Speaker 1: region due to record high water levels. Africa. Nigerian President
[4:33] Speaker 1: Bola Tanubu has ordered a rescue operation after 600 people
[4:39] Speaker 1: were kidnapped last week. The attack by an armed group
[4:43] Speaker 1: targeted a mosque in the Borgu district and was captured
[4:48] Speaker 1: on video. Kidnappings for ransom money have become common in Nigeria.
[4:55] Speaker 1: President Tanubu has called the attack cowardly. In Guinea-Bissau, a
[5:02] Speaker 1: referendum will be held next week on whether to expand
[5:06] Speaker 1: the powers of the President. Guinea-Bissau is led by military
[5:11] Speaker 1: officers after a coup succeeded in overthrowing the democratic government
[5:17] Speaker 1: last year. Changes being proposed by the referendum. include giving
[5:22] Speaker 1: the President the power to dismiss the Prime Minister and
[5:27] Speaker 1: shrinking Parliament from 102 down to 65 representatives. Europe In Russia,
[5:38] Speaker 1: A fire at a gas chemical complex has killed three
[5:43] Speaker 1: people and injured another 150. The complex was still under
[5:49] Speaker 1: construction when the fire broke out. The dead include one
[5:54] Speaker 1: Russian and two Chinese workers. The cause of the fire
[5:58] Speaker 1: is still unknown. In France, a tornado has damaged buildings
[6:05] Speaker 1: and injured around 20 people. The tornado damaged over half
[6:10] Speaker 1: of the buildings in the village of Poma. France only
[6:14] Speaker 1: sees a small number of tornadoes every year. And also
[6:19] Speaker 1: in France, Saudi Arabia has agreed to finance a new
[6:24] Speaker 1: Japanese-inspired amusement park. The amusement park will be themed around
[6:30] Speaker 1: manga and anime such as Dragon Ball Z. France's President
[6:36] Speaker 1: Emmanuel Macron and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman learned
[6:41] Speaker 1: of their shared interest in Dragon Ball Z on a
[6:44] Speaker 1: state visit last year. The amusement park will be located
