[0:00] Speaker 1: Good morning. This is Send7 World News in 7 minutes.
[0:06] Speaker 1: I'm Stephen Devincenzi. Today is Wednesday the 23rd of September, 2026.
[0:12] Speaker 1: Starting in the Americas today. In the United States, the
[0:25] Speaker 1: 81st United Nations General Assembly started yesterday in New York.
[0:30] Speaker 1: During his final address as Secretary General, Antonio Guterres spoke
[0:35] Speaker 1: about the need for countries to join together in the
[0:40] Speaker 1: face of the threats of war, climate change and the
[0:44] Speaker 1: rise of AI.
[0:46] Speaker 2: So on January 1st, when I'm no longer Secretary General,
[0:50] Speaker 2: be sure of this. Wherever I will be, whatever I
[0:55] Speaker 2: will be doing, I will keep championing the conviction that
[0:59] Speaker 2: peace is possible. that human dignity is universal, that the
[1:03] Speaker 2: power of law must prevail over the law of power,
[1:07] Speaker 2: and that our common future is worth fighting for.
[1:11] Speaker 1: Various countries' leaders began speaking yesterday, starting with Brazil's President
[1:17] Speaker 1: Lula da Silva, as is the tradition. French President Emmanuel
[1:21] Speaker 1: Macron said that the UN must, quote, go back to
[1:25] Speaker 1: the original spirit of the organisation, which is multilateralism. end quote.
[1:31] Speaker 1: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Israel has, quote,
[1:37] Speaker 1: a genocidal mindset that can never get enough of killing,
[1:42] Speaker 1: end quote. United States President Donald Trump defended his military
[1:46] Speaker 1: action against Iran and said that he had the option
[1:50] Speaker 1: of annihilating the Islamic Republic of Iran.
[1:54] Speaker 3: But I have a big decision to make. Will a
[1:58] Speaker 3: deal be made with Iran and that lets them rebuild
[2:03] Speaker 3: and create a far greater country than it ever was before,
[2:07] Speaker 3: maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East or
[2:10] Speaker 3: even the world? Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic
[2:16] Speaker 3: and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to
[2:19] Speaker 3: kill and destroy people and countries again?
[2:22] Speaker 1: Iran's President Massoud Peshkian is in New York and is
[2:28] Speaker 1: expected to speak at the General Assembly today. The Cuban
[2:33] Speaker 1: delegation of the UN walked out during Trump's speech after
[2:37] Speaker 1: Trump called Cuba a failed state. Also in the US,
[2:42] Speaker 1: the administration of President Trump has started a live YouTube
[2:47] Speaker 1: channel called Trump TV. Earlier this week, some television channels
[2:52] Speaker 1: said that they would boycott coverage of Trump after he
[2:56] Speaker 1: banned CNN, Politico and MSNOW from the White House. In Colombia,
[3:03] Speaker 1: there are various wildfires burning right now during a long
[3:07] Speaker 1: period of dry weather. One of the fires is threatening
[3:11] Speaker 1: the colonial town of Villa de Leyva, which is popular
[3:15] Speaker 1: with tourists. Off of Mexico's southwest coast, Hurricane Polo is
[3:22] Speaker 1: causing extreme winds and rain in Guerrero State and Michoacán State,
[3:28] Speaker 1: with the storm expected to stay in this area for
[3:31] Speaker 1: the rest of the week. Europe Denmark, Greenland and the
[3:39] Speaker 1: United States have signed a joint agreement about the security
[3:43] Speaker 1: of Greenland at a trilateral meeting at the United Nations
[3:47] Speaker 1: General Assembly. During his second presidency, Trump has often spoken
[3:52] Speaker 1: about taking control of Greenland. This deal includes allowing the
[3:57] Speaker 1: US to expand its military presence in Greenland, including with
[4:02] Speaker 1: two new bases. Speaking after the deal was signed, Danish
[4:07] Speaker 1: Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that the deal was good
[4:10] Speaker 1: for Greenland, Denmark and the US.
[4:14] Speaker 4: 75 years ago, we entered into an agreement about the
[4:17] Speaker 4: defence of Greenland. Today we are signing an even bigger
[4:22] Speaker 4: and better agreement, a deal that can last forever. This
[4:27] Speaker 4: deal is good for the United States, it's good for Greenland,
[4:32] Speaker 4: for Denmark, for the NATO Alliance and therefore also good
[4:36] Speaker 4: for Europe. In other words, we are strengthening our common security,
[4:43] Speaker 4: boosting our common deterrence, showing our adversaries, who we are,
[4:50] Speaker 4: and we are doing it together.
[4:54] Speaker 1: In the United Kingdom, police say that they stopped an
[4:58] Speaker 1: imminent terrorist attack targeting Jewish people in Manchester. Two people
[5:04] Speaker 1: have been arrested. Asia. Japan was hit by Cyclone Dujuan
[5:11] Speaker 1: between Monday and yesterday. The storm has now moved away
[5:16] Speaker 1: from Japan's islands. Dujuan is known to have caused four deaths,
[5:20] Speaker 1: with more people missing. In Yemen, over 120,000 people have
[5:27] Speaker 1: been displaced since the Houthi group took control of a
[5:31] Speaker 1: large area in the southwest of Yemen over the last
[5:35] Speaker 1: two weeks. At least 3,000 people have crossed the Bab
[5:39] Speaker 1: al-Mandab Strait to Africa. Agence France-Presse has reported that at
[5:44] Speaker 1: least 154 people have died in fighting in Yemen in
[5:48] Speaker 1: the last two days, including through Saudi airstrikes. In Turkey,
[5:54] Speaker 1: a shooting near a school left 11 students injured yesterday
[5:59] Speaker 1: in the city of Manisa. A 15-year-old boy has been arrested.
[6:06] Speaker 1: Africa In Nigeria, there have been protests to mark one
[6:11] Speaker 1: month since hundreds of people were kidnapped. Residents say that
[6:15] Speaker 1: over 600 people, mostly women, children and elderly people, were
[6:20] Speaker 1: kidnapped in the central Niger state last month. The lack
[6:25] Speaker 1: of security, especially because of mass kidnappings, is a major
[6:29] Speaker 1: focus point of elections in January 2027. And in Madagascar,
[6:36] Speaker 1: lemurs use singing techniques which are similar to opera singers,
[6:42] Speaker 1: according to scientists from the UK, Italy and Madagascar. A
[6:47] Speaker 1: joint study of lemur song found that lemurs open their
[6:51] Speaker 1: mouths wider to reach higher notes, which is the same
[6:55] Speaker 1: technique that soprano singers use. The research also found that
[7:00] Speaker 1: changing the pitch of their songs could be a technique
[7:04] Speaker 1: for making their songs travel further in thick forest. If
