[0:06] Speaker 1: I'm Stephen Devincenzi. Today is Wednesday, the 9th of September, 2026.
[0:10] Speaker 1: Starting in Europe today, 11 European countries and Canada have
[0:25] Speaker 1: issued a joint statement in which they say that they
[0:28] Speaker 1: will ban imports from Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
[0:33] Speaker 1: The United Kingdom, France, Canada, Norway, Ireland, Spain, Denmark, Finland, Portugal, Poland,
[0:39] Speaker 1: Sweden and Iceland have said that they will restrict trade
[0:43] Speaker 1: with Israeli settlements. The statement also condemns Israel's actions in
[0:48] Speaker 1: the West Bank, says that Israel must stop the expansion
[0:51] Speaker 1: of settlements. and says that Israel is undermining the possibility
[0:55] Speaker 1: of a two-state solution, which they say must be pursued
[0:59] Speaker 1: in order to reach a just and lasting peace. United
[1:03] Speaker 1: Kingdom Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, who is Jewish, made a
[1:07] Speaker 1: statement in the UK Parliament yesterday, including calling Israel's actions
[1:12] Speaker 1: ethnic cleansing. However, he started by talking about how his
[1:17] Speaker 1: grandfather and 60 other family members were killed in the
[1:21] Speaker 1: Holocaust in how he visited his surviving grandmother in Israel
[1:26] Speaker 1: in the 1970s, and how Israel had a right to exist.
[1:30] Speaker 2: Indeed, some of my most joyful childhood memories were picking
[1:33] Speaker 2: oranges as a kid on the kibbutz where my cousins lived.
[1:38] Speaker 2: Madam Deputy Speaker, my personal story, and that of thousands
[1:42] Speaker 2: of British Jews, is one of the many reasons why
[1:45] Speaker 2: I say to anyone here or around the world who
[1:47] Speaker 2: questions Israel's right to exist as a homeland for the
[1:50] Speaker 2: Jewish people, You are wrong and we will call you
[1:54] Speaker 2: out whenever you engage in this attempt at the erasure
[1:57] Speaker 2: of Israel.
[2:00] Speaker 1: Miliband spoke about October 7th, calling Hamas terrorists, and spoke
[2:05] Speaker 1: about rising anti-Semitism around the world. He then said that
[2:09] Speaker 1: there was no contradiction between celebrating Jewishness and at the
[2:13] Speaker 1: same time condemning the actions of the Israeli government. Miliband
[2:17] Speaker 1: then said that Israeli settlements in the West Bank were
[2:20] Speaker 1: preventing a two-state solution from becoming reality.
[2:24] Speaker 2: More settlements have been approved under the four years of
[2:27] Speaker 2: this Israeli government than in the previous 20 years. Let
[2:31] Speaker 2: us spell out what this has meant for Palestinian communities.
[2:35] Speaker 2: Houses bulldozed, roads and public infrastructure destroyed, families displaced from
[2:40] Speaker 2: their homes, community by community, family by family, person by person.
[2:47] Speaker 1: Israel's foreign minister, Gideon Saar, said that Britain was systematically
[2:52] Speaker 1: working against the state of Israel, and Israel has ordered
[2:56] Speaker 1: the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem. In Germany,

[3:34] Speaker 1: walked out on Monday in protest, and the management of
[3:38] Speaker 1: the Eiffel Tower has apologised. Also in France, police are

[3:56] Speaker 1: dropped during the robbery. In Ukraine, there has been a

[4:14] Speaker 1: person was killed in a Russian attack on a train
[4:17] Speaker 1: travelling between the southern cities of Dnipro and Zaporizhia. Asia
[4:25] Speaker 1: In Saudi Arabia, four southern cities were attacked yesterday by
[4:29] Speaker 1: Yemen's Houthi group, which is a major ally of Iran.
[4:34] Speaker 1: The Houthis said that they targeted Saudi military bases and
[4:37] Speaker 1: oil facilities. Saudi Arabia said that 73 people were injured,
[4:42] Speaker 1: but nobody was killed. Also, in Yemen, there has been

[4:51] Speaker 1: government on the west coast, with soldiers from both sides
[4:55] Speaker 1: being reported killed, as well as some civilians. The Houthis
[4:58] Speaker 1: control most of western Yemen, including the capital Sana'a, and

[5:07] Speaker 1: including the second city, Aden. In southern Lebanon, Israeli strikes
[5:13] Speaker 1: on a town on Monday killed at least 12 people,

[5:25] Speaker 1: In Japan, the Tokyo district of Shinjuku will ban many
[5:30] Speaker 1: short-term rentals, like Airbnb, after complaints from residents. The new
[5:36] Speaker 1: rule will ban the short-term rental of private homes in

[6:43] Speaker 1: Americas In Brazil, Supreme Court Justice André Mendonca has ordered
[6:49] Speaker 1: the suspension of Federal Police Chief André Rodrigues. There is
[6:54] Speaker 1: an ongoing crisis within Brazil's Supreme Court as there is
[6:58] Speaker 1: open conflict between Mendonca who was appointed by former right-wing
[7:03] Speaker 1: president Jair Bolsonaro, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandra de Moraes,
