[0:00] Speaker 1: Good morning, this is Send7, world news in 7 minutes.
[0:06] Speaker 1: I'm Ben Mallett, today is Thursday, the 10th of September, 2026.
[0:11] Speaker 1: Starting in Asia, Iran and the United States attacked shipping
[0:25] Speaker 1: near the Strait of Hormuz yesterday. The US claims to
[0:29] Speaker 1: have sunk five Iranian oil tankers. Iran says that it
[0:34] Speaker 1: attacked 10 ships in the region and that it fired
[0:38] Speaker 1: missiles at US army bases in Jordan. This latest wave
[0:44] Speaker 1: of attacks on shipping has caused the price of crude
[0:48] Speaker 1: oil to rise above $ 100 per barrel. The price of
[0:54] Speaker 1: oil had averaged below $ 100 a barrel since April when
[0:59] Speaker 1: the US and Iran agreed to a temporary ceasefire. This
[1:04] Speaker 1: ceasefire ended in July. Bangladesh is facing its worst outbreak
[1:11] Speaker 1: of measles on record. Around 1,000 people have died from
[1:17] Speaker 1: measles so far, with a suspected 166,000 people infected since
[1:23] Speaker 1: the outbreak began in March. The World Health Organisation has
[1:29] Speaker 1: blamed the severity of the outbreak on recent pauses to
[1:34] Speaker 1: Bangladesh's vaccination programmes, Vaccinations were heavily disrupted in 2024 and
[1:41] Speaker 1: 2025 due to political violence. Most of the victims of
[1:47] Speaker 1: this outbreak are children under the age of 5. Europe
[1:55] Speaker 1: Norway held a state funeral for King Harald V yesterday.
[2:01] Speaker 1: In attendance were royals from the United Kingdom, Japan, Denmark,
[2:06] Speaker 1: the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. King Harald was 89 at
[2:12] Speaker 1: the time of his death and has been succeeded as
[2:15] Speaker 1: king by his son, King Harkon VIII. In Finland, US
[2:22] Speaker 1: company Google will invest $ 15 billion in infrastructure to support
[2:29] Speaker 1: its AI technology. This is Google's largest ever single investment
[2:35] Speaker 1: in Europe. The investment in AI is largely due to
[2:40] Speaker 1: access to cheap nuclear energy and the colder climate in Finland,
[2:46] Speaker 1: which will help to cool AI data centres. Google's president,
[2:51] Speaker 1: Ruth Porat, also credited Finland's workforce and leadership for the investment.
[2:58] Speaker 2: Google's announcement this morning. which builds on our long-term investment
[3:02] Speaker 2: in Finland, reflects our confidence in the strength of Finland's leadership,
[3:06] Speaker 2: amazing workforce, and enthusiasm for digital transformation. And it underscores
[3:13] Speaker 2: our commitment to strengthen Google's connection with Finland and with Europe.
[3:20] Speaker 1: Africa Nigeria has named a new military commander to lead
[3:27] Speaker 1: actions against the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram. Major General
[3:32] Speaker 1: Ibukunle Ademola Hose will become the 16th commander tasked with
[3:37] Speaker 1: combating Boko Haram since 2015. This change comes ahead of
[3:43] Speaker 1: presidential elections in January. In Equatorial Guinea, Video footage has
[3:50] Speaker 1: shown police drawing and aiming guns at migrants deported from
[3:56] Speaker 1: the US. Equatorial Guinea signed an agreement with the US
[4:01] Speaker 1: in 2025 to accept deportees from third countries. A dispute
[4:07] Speaker 1: broke out on Saturday. between migrants and police over mobile
[4:13] Speaker 1: phone use. The dispute escalated and guns were aimed at
[4:17] Speaker 1: the migrants who were staying at a hotel in the
[4:21] Speaker 1: city of Malibu. No one was shot in the confrontation.
[4:28] Speaker 1: The Americas. The United States will ban a number of
[4:33] Speaker 1: goods being imported from Canada. Certain alcohols, motorcycles and dairy
[4:39] Speaker 1: products will not be allowed into the US from Canada
[4:44] Speaker 1: after the 29th of September. These bans mark an escalation
[4:49] Speaker 1: in the trade dispute between the two countries. The US
[4:54] Speaker 1: first imposed tariffs as high as 50% on $ 20 billion
[4:59] Speaker 1: worth of Canadian goods, before Canada did the same to
[5:04] Speaker 1: $ 20 billion of US products. In Brazil Supreme Court Justice
[5:11] Speaker 1: Flavio Dino has ordered that Federal Police Chief André Rodríguez
[5:16] Speaker 1: should be immediately reinstated. Justice Dino says that suspending Rodríguez
[5:23] Speaker 1: would affect his current investigations. Rodriguez was given a suspension
[5:29] Speaker 1: order on Tuesday by a different Supreme Court justice, Andre Mendonca.
[5:34] Speaker 1: This intervention by Justice Dino is the latest disagreement between
[5:39] Speaker 1: Brazil's top judges, following accusations exchanged between Justices Mendonca and
[5:46] Speaker 1: Alexandre de Moraes. And a Costa Rican man is claiming
[5:52] Speaker 1: to be the world's oldest man, Jose Flores claims to
[5:56] Speaker 1: be 119 years old. His family have presented records which
[6:02] Speaker 1: show that Flores was born in 1907, but experts are
[6:07] Speaker 1: still reviewing records before confirming his official birth date. The
[6:12] Speaker 1: world's oldest verified person Currently is Ethel Caterham from the
[6:18] Speaker 1: United Kingdom, who was born in 1909 and turned 117
