[0:06] Speaker 1: I'm Stephen Devincenzi. Today is Friday the 9th of October, 2026.
[0:11] Speaker 1: Starting in Europe today.
[0:13] Speaker 2: In Ukraine, a Russian airstrike on a bus and bus
[0:16] Speaker 2: stop killed at least 33 civilians yesterday.
[0:31] Speaker 1: The guided aerial bomb hit the bus in the city
[0:35] Speaker 1: of Kramatorsk in the eastern Donetsk region. Three people were
[0:39] Speaker 1: also killed by artillery fire on a village near Kramatorsk.
[0:44] Speaker 1: On Wednesday, at least 22 people, including five children, were
[0:49] Speaker 1: killed in the northern region of Chernihiv when a Russian
[0:52] Speaker 1: strike on an apartment building caused the building to collapse.
[0:58] Speaker 1: British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband is in Ukraine and visited
[1:02] Speaker 1: the destroyed building yesterday. He said that these attacks were
[1:07] Speaker 1: a sign of Putin's evil and announced new sanctions on Russia.
[1:12] Speaker 2: But I'm here to say we are not just going
[1:14] Speaker 2: to say words of support, we are going to offer
[1:17] Speaker 2: deeds of support as well. So today we're announcing more
[1:21] Speaker 2: sanctions on Russia, on the war machine of Putin, on
[1:27] Speaker 2: the Shadow Fleet, on the oil companies, on the crypto,
[1:31] Speaker 2: on the financing of the war. We are here to
[1:33] Speaker 2: announce more humanitarian support. We are here to announce more
[1:37] Speaker 2: support for energy.
[1:39] Speaker 1: Also in Ukraine, the United Nations has said that there
[1:43] Speaker 1: are still around 1,700 people living in the town of
[1:48] Speaker 1: Oleshky in the southern region of Kherson, despite there being
[1:53] Speaker 1: no water, electricity or heating. Oleshky is in the Russian-occupied
[1:59] Speaker 1: part of Ukraine, to the east of the Dnipro River. However,
[2:03] Speaker 1: Ukrainian and Russian forces are fighting, mostly with drones, over
[2:08] Speaker 1: the Dnipro River, and people are unable to leave the
[2:11] Speaker 1: town of Oleshky. Ukraine says that it has airdropped food
[2:16] Speaker 1: into Oleshky and accuses Russia of rejecting ceasefires to allow
[2:21] Speaker 1: people to leave. Russia blames Ukraine for blocking food deliveries.
[2:27] Speaker 1: In Spain, María del Carmen Abascal, who sparked ongoing protests
[2:33] Speaker 1: about housing, has died aged 87. Abascal, generally known as
[2:39] Speaker 1: María Carmen, was evicted from her home two weeks ago
[2:43] Speaker 1: after having lived there since she was a teenager, after
[2:47] Speaker 1: the investment company which had bought the apartment dramatically raised
[2:52] Speaker 1: the rent. María Carmen's eviction was a leading cause of protests.
[2:57] Speaker 1: that are continuing until today, and indirectly helped to cause
[3:02] Speaker 1: a snap general election in Spain after Prime Minister Pedro
[3:06] Speaker 1: Sánchez' s government wasn't able to pass housing and rental reform
[3:11] Speaker 1: measures last week. Some protesters have chanted assassins, blaming the
[3:17] Speaker 1: death of Mari Carmen on the state. America's United States
[3:24] Speaker 1: President Donald Trump has announced that all children under the
[3:29] Speaker 1: age of 18 now have a Trump account, as automatic
[3:33] Speaker 1: enrolment has finished. Trump accounts are new investment accounts for
[3:39] Speaker 1: children that are funded either by the government, by philanthropic
[3:44] Speaker 1: donations or by families. All babies born during Trump's second
[3:50] Speaker 1: term are automatically receiving $ 1, 000 in their accounts. Speaking next
[3:56] Speaker 1: to President Trump at the White House, Mike Dell, founder
[4:00] Speaker 1: of Dell Computers, said that his family has put $ 250
[4:03] Speaker 1: into 25 million accounts, totalling $ 6. 25 billion. I started a company,
[4:07] Speaker 1: Dell Technologies, with $ 1, 000.
[4:17] Speaker 3: And in America, small beginnings can become extraordinary things. And
[4:22] Speaker 3: I'm very pleased to let you know today that we
[4:26] Speaker 3: have funded 10 million of those accounts as of this morning.
[4:31] Speaker 3: And by the end of this week, we will have
[4:33] Speaker 3: funded 25 million of those accounts.
[4:36] Speaker 1: In Canada, a 16-year-old boy who had to be rescued
[4:42] Speaker 1: from a mountain has said that he was lost after
[4:45] Speaker 1: following incorrect directions from the AI chatbot Claude. In Chile,
[4:52] Speaker 1: there has been flooding in central and southern regions, including
[4:56] Speaker 1: the capital Santiago. One person is reported to have died
[5:01] Speaker 1: and tens of thousands of people have lost power. Asia.
[5:07] Speaker 1: In Yemen, forces of the internationally recognised government appear to
[5:12] Speaker 1: have recaptured much of the land that the Houthi group
[5:17] Speaker 1: conquered a few weeks ago on the west coast. There
[5:21] Speaker 1: has been intense fighting in many parts of western Yemen
[5:24] Speaker 1: for the last few days, and Saudi Arabia has also
[5:28] Speaker 1: been trading missile fire with the Houthis. Yesterday, the New
[5:33] Speaker 1: York Times reported that Pakistan had conducted airstrikes against the Houthis. However,
[5:39] Speaker 1: Pakistan has said that this was fake and fabricated. In
[5:45] Speaker 1: Israel and Palestine, it has now been one year since
[5:49] Speaker 1: Israel and Hamas signed a ceasefire for Gaza. Gaza's health
[5:54] Speaker 1: ministry says that 1,445 Palestinians have been killed since the
[6:00] Speaker 1: ceasefire was signed a year ago. In Japan, investigations are
[6:06] Speaker 1: being carried out into possible illegal collusion between beer companies.
[6:13] Speaker 1: The beer manufacturers Asahi, Kirin, Suntory and Sapporo have been
[6:19] Speaker 1: accused of fixing prices together. These four companies control over
[6:24] Speaker 1: 90% of Japan's beer market. Africa Ethiopia's government forces have
[6:33] Speaker 1: used drones to attack Eritrean soldiers who have crossed into Ethiopia.
[6:38] Speaker 1: According to the conflict monitoring group Akhled, Eritrean forces were
[6:44] Speaker 1: reported to have entered the Tigray region last week during
[6:48] Speaker 1: fighting between the Tigray People's Liberation Front and the Ethiopian military.
[6:54] Speaker 1: And in the Seychelles, the number of giant tortoises is
[7:00] Speaker 1: at a record high, according to a new survey. The
[7:05] Speaker 1: Aldabra giant tortoise was once an endangered species. However, decades
[7:11] Speaker 1: of conservation efforts have helped the tortoise numbers to grow
