[0:00] Speaker 1: Good morning, this is Send7, world news in 7 minutes.
[0:06] Speaker 1: I'm Ben Mallett. Today is Thursday, the 22nd of October, 2026.
[0:12] Speaker 1: Starting in Africa, Nigeria has reported its first case of
[0:25] Speaker 1: Ebola since 2014. This latest outbreak of Ebola began in
[0:31] Speaker 1: the Democratic Republic of Congo in May, where it has
[0:35] Speaker 1: killed over 4,600 people. Nigeria has become the fourth African
[0:41] Speaker 1: country to report cases of Ebola this year, after Uganda
[0:46] Speaker 1: and Kenya also reported small outbreaks. There is currently no
[0:52] Speaker 1: vaccine for this strain of Ebola which kills around half
[0:57] Speaker 1: of those who are infected. In Libya, masked men in
[1:03] Speaker 1: military uniforms tried to take control of Libya's audit bureau
[1:08] Speaker 1: in Tripoli yesterday. The audit bureau is responsible for protecting
[1:14] Speaker 1: public funds. The United Nations Mission in Libya said that
[1:19] Speaker 1: this was an unacceptable attempt to claim a deputy head
[1:24] Speaker 1: position in the audit bureau by force. It is not
[1:28] Speaker 1: clear who ordered the masked men to try and storm
[1:32] Speaker 1: the audit bureau. Europe Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed
[1:41] Speaker 1: in principle to reopen peace talks with Ukraine next month.
[1:46] Speaker 1: The talks would be mediated by the United States and
[1:51] Speaker 1: could take place in the United Arab Emirates. The last
[1:56] Speaker 1: series of US-mediated peace talks between Russia and Ukraine took
[2:01] Speaker 1: place in February and led to exchanges of prisoners of
[2:06] Speaker 1: war but no peace deal. The US has put pressure
[2:11] Speaker 1: on Ukraine in recent months to compromise on their peace terms.
[2:16] Speaker 1: US President Trump says that the US has spent a
[2:20] Speaker 1: fortune supporting Ukraine.
[2:23] Speaker 2: But Ukraine has to want to make a deal because
[2:26] Speaker 2: the United States has spent a fortune. Europe has spent
[2:29] Speaker 2: a fortune. Europe's tired of it right now. And if
[2:32] Speaker 2: they don't make a deal, ultimately, it's just going to get,
[2:34] Speaker 2: in my opinion, it's just really just going to get worse.
[2:39] Speaker 1: In France, President Emmanuel Macron has promised to prevent a
[2:44] Speaker 1: repeat of the violence at protests last weekend. Student protests
[2:50] Speaker 1: turned violent in many cities across France and were joined
[2:54] Speaker 1: by non-students. Parts of France have introduced curfews this week
[3:00] Speaker 1: in attempts to restrict the possibility of protests turning violent.
[3:06] Speaker 1: President Macron also criticised some foreign leaders who have commented,
[3:11] Speaker 1: including United States President Donald Trump, calling their comments about
[3:17] Speaker 1: the causes of the protests stupid and unacceptable. In Greece,
[3:23] Speaker 1: thousands of students and teachers protested peacefully in Athens yesterday.
[3:30] Speaker 1: Around 10,000 protesters gathered to call for better funding in
[3:35] Speaker 1: education and smaller class sizes. The Americas In the US,
[3:44] Speaker 1: the AI company Anthropic reported a loss of over $ 80
[3:49] Speaker 1: billion in the first half of 2026. Anthropic is currently
[3:55] Speaker 1: a private company, but is expected to go public with
[3:59] Speaker 1: its shares in November. Anthropic had been valued at $ 1. 5 trillion,
[4:07] Speaker 1: although some investors expect this valuation to drop slightly after
[4:12] Speaker 1: recent reports on its losses. Colombia will continue with the
[4:19] Speaker 1: government's budget plans after an error was made in passing
[4:24] Speaker 1: the budget bill. Colombia's 2027 budget of almost $ 200 billion
[4:30] Speaker 1: was accidentally passed as two differing versions by Colombia's Senate
[4:36] Speaker 1: and a lower chamber. Vice President José Manuel Restrepo says
[4:41] Speaker 1: the government's budget will go ahead anyway. Asia and Oceania
[4:49] Speaker 1: Australian politician Helen Haynes has now had both of her
[4:55] Speaker 1: legs amputated after being deliberately rammed by a vehicle on Monday.
[5:01] Speaker 1: According to Haynes' husband, she is in a stable condition
[5:05] Speaker 1: in hospital, although her legs could not be saved. Australian
[5:10] Speaker 1: news channels have reported that 43-year-old Brendan Nugent deliberately rammed
[5:16] Speaker 1: Haynes twice with his vehicle before being restrained by members
[5:22] Speaker 1: of the public. In South Korea, a shark which had
[5:27] Speaker 1: been trapped in a canal for more than a month
[5:30] Speaker 1: has been successfully released into the ocean. The shark was
[5:35] Speaker 1: first spotted in the port of Busan in September 2017,
[5:39] Speaker 1: and has received the nickname Bukangi. Two attempts to rescue
[5:45] Speaker 1: Bukangi had already failed before she was guided back to
[5:49] Speaker 1: sea yesterday. In Taiwan, prosecutors have charged five people for
[5:56] Speaker 1: attacking a comedian who made fun of China's President Xi Jinping.
[6:01] Speaker 1: The five people involved had planned to run the comedian
[6:05] Speaker 1: over with a car in hopes of injuring him, so
[6:09] Speaker 1: that he could no longer perform. The comedian was only
[6:14] Speaker 1: lightly injured in the attack. Freedom of speech, including the
[6:19] Speaker 1: right to criticise politicians, is protected by Taiwan's constitution. And
[6:26] Speaker 1: in Indonesia, a species of primate which was feared extinct
[6:31] Speaker 1: has been rediscovered on a tropical island. The Banka Slow
[6:36] Speaker 1: Loris is a slow-moving primate that lives high up in
[6:40] Speaker 1: trees and is venomous. The Banka slowloris was last seen
[6:45] Speaker 1: by scientists in the 1930s. 90 of the primates were
[6:51] Speaker 1: rediscovered in a recent study on the island of Banka.
[6:56] Speaker 1: That's your world news in 7 minutes. If you enjoyed
