[0:02] Speaker 1: I record nature sounds for a living. I don't make
[0:05] Speaker 1: them from merging royalty free soundscapes found online. I mean literally,
[0:11] Speaker 1: I haul gear out into the wilderness, set up field recorders,
[0:15] Speaker 1: and capture eight hours of wind through trees or frogs
[0:18] Speaker 1: in a swamp, or whatever someone wants in their ear,
[0:21] Speaker 1: but at two a m. To sleep too. A few
[0:25] Speaker 1: weeks ago, I hiked out to a stretch of forest
[0:28] Speaker 1: in the Pacific Northwest. It was far from any road
[0:32] Speaker 1: or town to avoid sound pollution from passers by. There
[0:36] Speaker 1: wasn't even a foot trail, just trees, ridge lines, and
[0:41] Speaker 1: a stillness that misses with your sense of time. I'd
[0:45] Speaker 1: scouted the spot online. There was minimal wild life and
[0:49] Speaker 1: no nearby power lines to cause interference. Perfect for what
[0:54] Speaker 1: I needed. I set up the rig just before sundown,
[0:59] Speaker 1: a shotgun mic on a carbon tripod, paired with an
[1:02] Speaker 1: unintended recorder tucked into a pelican case, all wired for
[1:06] Speaker 1: battery life and max sensitivity. I set it a run
[1:11] Speaker 1: overnight and hiked back out with my overnight pack. The
[1:16] Speaker 1: next morning, I picked up the gear, packed everything up,
[1:20] Speaker 1: and drove back to the cabin i'd rented for the week.
[1:23] Speaker 1: Standard routine. When I dumped the files onto my laptop,
[1:30] Speaker 1: it sounded clean, real clean. You could hear a soft
[1:35] Speaker 1: wind tugging through the pines, some distant wood creeks, a
[1:39] Speaker 1: lone owl. It sounded like something I'd barely have to
[1:42] Speaker 1: touch in post. No clipping, no signs of animals or interference.
[1:48] Speaker 1: It still needed scraping in case a low hum of
[1:51] Speaker 1: an aircraft ruined a segment, so I slowly scrubbed the
[1:56] Speaker 1: whole thing. But then I hit three forty one a M.
[2:03] Speaker 1: I didn't catch it the first time. I was playing
[2:06] Speaker 1: it at four time speed, but even at high speed,
[2:10] Speaker 1: something about that section jarred, so I went back played
[2:16] Speaker 1: it in real time. That's when I heard it. The
[2:21] Speaker 1: whole atmosphere buckled inward like a vacuum pop, a sharp
[2:26] Speaker 1: in hail, followed by a deep groaning creek, like wood
[2:30] Speaker 1: twisting under strain. Then nothing, All sounds stopped, The wind died,
[2:39] Speaker 1: insect ceased in unison, no underbrush rustling. I've heard forests
[2:45] Speaker 1: go quiet before when a predator moves through or a
[2:49] Speaker 1: storm's on the way, but this wasn't that. This was
[2:55] Speaker 1: dead silence, even in a perfectly quiet night. Your mike
[3:01] Speaker 1: still picks up something ambient hiss, high end drift gear noise.
[3:07] Speaker 1: But here there was nothing for exactly sixty three seconds,
[3:13] Speaker 1: like the world forgot how to make a sound. And then,
[3:18] Speaker 1: just as suddenly it came back. There was a faint
[3:24] Speaker 1: crack like a tree stretching. Then the wind returned, the
[3:29] Speaker 1: chorus of night bugs, a creaking canopy. I marked the
[3:34] Speaker 1: section in my door and cut it out of the
[3:36] Speaker 1: final mix, labeled it three forty one anomaly, and saved
[3:41] Speaker 1: it with the raw files. I figured it was a
[3:44] Speaker 1: bizarre environmental event, maybe a weird pressure drop or a
[3:48] Speaker 1: shifting fault line under the soil. At least that's what
[3:53] Speaker 1: I told myself. I couldn't stop thinking about the three
[3:59] Speaker 1: for one anomaly. The silence wasn't a recording issue. The
[4:04] Speaker 1: wave form didn't flatline, it just dropped into a void.
[4:09] Speaker 1: The environment stopped generating sound, and that inhale it hadn't
[4:15] Speaker 1: come from the mic. So two nights later I went back,
[4:22] Speaker 1: same trailhead, same clearing, but a different set up. This
[4:25] Speaker 1: time I swapped the shotgun mic for a parabolic dish
[4:29] Speaker 1: with a matted stereopair, new recorder, fresh cables, no chance
[4:35] Speaker 1: of interference or hardware glitches if the anomaly happened again,
[4:40] Speaker 1: I wanted to rule out bad gear. I set everything
[4:45] Speaker 1: up before dusk, hiked out, and repeated the routine back
[4:51] Speaker 1: at the cabin. The next morning, I scanned through the
[4:53] Speaker 1: files again. The wave form jumped out at me before
[4:58] Speaker 1: I even press play. At exactly three forty one a
[5:03] Speaker 1: m same shudder, same sucked in static, same sixty three
[5:09] Speaker 1: seconds of total silence, But this time there was more.
[5:18] Speaker 1: The creaking noise was slightly louder, like something massive and
[5:22] Speaker 1: straining was close to the mic. After that, a new noise,
[5:28] Speaker 1: just barely audible, but it was there, something grinding, like
[5:35] Speaker 1: roots twisting on a dry soil, or teeth. I checked
[5:42] Speaker 1: every logical explanation I could think of local seismic activity.
[5:47] Speaker 1: Nothing on the USGS feed whether perfectly still, not even
[5:52] Speaker 1: a pressure dip. And besides, neither of these would repeat
[5:57] Speaker 1: so perfectly like I had seen. I ran it past
[6:01] Speaker 1: an engineer I know. She thought it might brf interference
[6:05] Speaker 1: from military aircraft. Or she said, you recorder caught bigfoot
[6:11] Speaker 1: scratching his back on a cedar tree. I laughed. Then
[6:19] Speaker 1: I uploaded it. Well, I meant to upload the cleaned version,
[6:25] Speaker 1: just the gentle forest ambience with the yard sixty three
[6:28] Speaker 1: seconds cut and cross faded. But when I packaged the files,
[6:33] Speaker 1: I must have left the original by accident, the raw
[6:37] Speaker 1: take with the three forty one segment left intact. I've
[6:46] Speaker 1: got my fair share of weird listener emails over the years,
[6:50] Speaker 1: people claiming to hear voices and waterfalls. Someone once swore
[6:54] Speaker 1: a raccoon whispered Bible verses in their sleep track. Ambient
[6:58] Speaker 1: audio an overactive imaginations go hand in hand. For this
[7:04] Speaker 1: one felt different. The message came from a guy named Nolan,
[7:11] Speaker 1: who was a short email, no pleasantries or emojis, just
[7:16] Speaker 1: this subject your latest upload. Need your opinion. I use
[7:23] Speaker 1: your app to sleep with Tinatus played your new forest loop.
[7:26] Speaker 1: Last night around three point thirty. I woke up gasping,
[7:31] Speaker 1: No nightmare, just this pressure in the room, like something
[7:34] Speaker 1: leaned on my chest. I checked the audiophile to see
[7:38] Speaker 1: if anything caused this and found this screenshot attached. Let
[7:44] Speaker 1: me know if you see it too. He attached the
[7:48] Speaker 1: spectrogram's screen grab from his player. A frequency waterfall of
[7:53] Speaker 1: the three forty one segment right in the center of
[7:57] Speaker 1: the silence was a shape. It wasn't obviously human, but
[8:04] Speaker 1: it was symmetrical, made of low, barely besetable frequencies, hollow
[8:10] Speaker 1: at the center, with long vertical streaks running from top
[8:14] Speaker 1: to bottom, almost like arms or legs, but far too long.
[8:21] Speaker 1: I stared at it for a long time before I
[8:23] Speaker 1: closed the tab. Just audio paraodolia, like seeing faces in
[8:28] Speaker 1: tree bark, I told myself and moved on. But the
[8:33] Speaker 1: following emails were harder to ignore. Someone in Oregon reported
[8:38] Speaker 1: that their power cut out for exactly one minute at
[8:41] Speaker 1: three forty one am, somehow attributing it to my video,
[8:45] Speaker 1: easy to dismiss as bad timing. Another said their dog
[8:49] Speaker 1: bark to the speaker, then refused to enter the room
[8:52] Speaker 1: where the track was playing. One woman saw all four
[8:56] Speaker 1: of her houseplants were dead the next morning. They didn't
[8:59] Speaker 1: just work a bit, they were fully blackened, crispy, like
[9:04] Speaker 1: they'd been flash dried. I still didn't panic, but I
[9:11] Speaker 1: got curious. I reloaded the raw file and reaper, this
[9:16] Speaker 1: time pushing deeper noise reduction, spectral isolation, half speed playback,
[9:23] Speaker 1: then reversed. I tried every witch angle. There was more
[9:29] Speaker 1: under the distortion than I'd realized a single, deep knock
[9:35] Speaker 1: and then wet footsteps, soft spaced, far apart pineedles, crunching
[9:43] Speaker 1: under something that walks like it didn't need to. I
[9:47] Speaker 1: froze the wave form. The pattern was there, a gate,
[9:52] Speaker 1: something with weight. I pulled up Night one's raw file
[9:57] Speaker 1: at the same time stamp the same silence. I overlaid them.
[10:03] Speaker 1: The knock was identical, but on night too, the footsteps
[10:09] Speaker 1: started sooner and they were closer. I didn't go back
[10:17] Speaker 1: to the forest because I'm brave. I went back because
[10:21] Speaker 1: my name was on that file. People had started commenting,
[10:25] Speaker 1: messaging accusing. One user posted a TikTok claiming the track
[10:30] Speaker 1: gave their boyfriend seizures. Another said the sister collapse while
[10:33] Speaker 1: it played and hadn't woke up since. Some said it
[10:37] Speaker 1: was a hoax, others a curse. What even called me
[10:41] Speaker 1: a murderer. So I packed the best gear. I owned
[10:46] Speaker 1: a parabolic mic, a battery recorder, and a preamp with
[10:50] Speaker 1: real time monitoring. I brought my field laptop too, so
[10:54] Speaker 1: I could listen live, not just hope. I called something
[10:57] Speaker 1: after the fact. I also brought a flashlight, three back
[11:02] Speaker 1: of batteries, and a hunting knife I'd never actually used.
[11:07] Speaker 1: I arrived just after two a m. The clearing looked
[11:11] Speaker 1: exactly the same. The pine spirals still there, like the
[11:15] Speaker 1: trees had grown in deliberate, concentric rings. No animals, no
[11:19] Speaker 1: signs of people. I set up the tripod, calibrated the mic,
[11:25] Speaker 1: and began recording. At first, it was peaceful crickets, faint wind,
[11:34] Speaker 1: occasional owl hoots drifting from the canopy, clean audio, nothing strange,
[11:41] Speaker 1: but I kept my eye on the clock. Three forty
[11:45] Speaker 1: fifty nine seconds, three forty one gone, All of it.
[11:54] Speaker 1: Sound just ceased to exist. The ledm I record a
[11:59] Speaker 1: flickered one, then held steady. The wave form of my
[12:03] Speaker 1: laptop froze into a flat bar. I tapped the mic. Nothing,
[12:09] Speaker 1: not even a pop. The only thing I could hear
[12:12] Speaker 1: was my own breath, louder than it should have been, sharp, exposed,
[12:18] Speaker 1: like it didn't belong in this stillness. What the hell?
[12:23] Speaker 1: I muttered? The words felt intrusive, wrong, like I just
[12:29] Speaker 1: shouted during a funeral. Then crunch a twig directly behind
[12:39] Speaker 1: me close. I spun flashlight up and that's when the
[12:45] Speaker 1: noise came back. But it didn't return the same. It
[12:50] Speaker 1: surged in like a recording played through broken speakers, echoing
[12:54] Speaker 1: and unsinked. The trees creaked underlay the wind hiccuped, and
[13:00] Speaker 1: something was moving, not straight toward me, around me, circling fast.
[13:09] Speaker 1: I whipped the flashlight left and right, catching glimpses of
[13:12] Speaker 1: limbs between trunks, slender, too long, moving in bursts, blurring
[13:18] Speaker 1: between shadows. Then I saw it ahead, upside down, hanging
[13:28] Speaker 1: from high in the trees, like it was suspended by
[13:31] Speaker 1: its legs, wide black eyes like oil pool reflections, stringy
[13:37] Speaker 1: hair clinging to a crumpled gray face, skin like soaked paper, wrinkled, smiling.
[13:47] Speaker 1: Its mouth was too wide. Then her hand began to
[13:51] Speaker 1: reach slowly. The hand approached and never stopped. The limbs
[13:58] Speaker 1: stretched slowly, impossibly, the shoulder never moving from the tree,
[14:04] Speaker 1: elbow bending the wrong way, fingers lengthening by the inch.
[14:09] Speaker 1: Despite how high up the thing was. I was in shock.
[14:14] Speaker 1: I couldn't move, stunned by the abnormality of what I
[14:17] Speaker 1: was witnessing. It reached toward my neck and brushed the
[14:22] Speaker 1: leaf beside my collar bone. That was enough. I ran. Branches,
[14:34] Speaker 1: tore up my arms, roots caught my boots. Every few seconds,
[14:38] Speaker 1: I nearly trip, catch myself and push harder. I could
[14:43] Speaker 1: hear it behind me, above me, so fast that I
[14:46] Speaker 1: couldn't pinpoint where it was. It wasn't chasing on the ground.
[14:51] Speaker 1: It was moving through the trees, something heavy, thudding from
[14:55] Speaker 1: branch to branch, like a gorilla made of wood and tendon.
[15:00] Speaker 1: Every impact sent down a shudder, a sound that wasn't
[15:03] Speaker 1: just in my ears, it rang in my teeth. I
[15:08] Speaker 1: didn't scream, I couldn't. My breath was fire in my lungs,
[15:13] Speaker 1: my chest locked tight. I just ran. That was all
[15:19] Speaker 1: I could focus on. I didn't want to be led astray.
[15:23] Speaker 1: I had one goal in mind, locked on, and speed
[15:27] Speaker 1: was my only chance, because trying to outmaneuver this thing
[15:31] Speaker 1: would only push me into unknown territory. The trees started thinning.
[15:37] Speaker 1: I saw the glint of moonlight on glass my car.
[15:43] Speaker 1: I vaulted over a stump, skidd it onto the gravel,
[15:46] Speaker 1: and yanked the door open so hard it cracked the hinge.
[15:50] Speaker 1: Leaving it unlocked was my only saving grace. Knowing there
[15:53] Speaker 1: was no one around for miles. The keys were in
[15:57] Speaker 1: my coat pocket, of course they were. I scrambled, fumbled,
[16:02] Speaker 1: hand shaking, then bang. The hood buckled under the impact.
[16:11] Speaker 1: A single hand slapped down onto the windshield. Long fingers, bone,
[16:15] Speaker 1: white skin, unkempt, black nails, dragging screeching lines across the glass,
[16:21] Speaker 1: like it was trying to peel it open. Its face
[16:25] Speaker 1: leaned in, neck so long it had to twist a
[16:28] Speaker 1: few times. That peer in inverted, grinning eyes like oil,
[16:34] Speaker 1: pulled over bone. The keys hid the ignition. The engine coughed, thin, caught.
[16:41] Speaker 1: I slammed it into drive and hit the gas. Gravel
[16:45] Speaker 1: exploded behind the tires. I clipped a tree. As I
[16:48] Speaker 1: peeled out. The thing blurred past the rear view mirror,
[16:53] Speaker 1: arms trailing like ropes of wet muscle. I didn't lock
[16:57] Speaker 1: in the mirror to see if it followed. I just
[17:00] Speaker 1: drove fast, stupid fast. The trees a blur of black
[17:06] Speaker 1: and silver, the trail nothing but instinct. I didn't breathe
[17:12] Speaker 1: until I saw the welcome sign for the next town.
[17:18] Speaker 1: When I got home, I locked the door behind me,
[17:21] Speaker 1: dead bolt chain, even with a chair under the knob.
[17:25] Speaker 1: Then every window, one by one. I knew it was pointless,
[17:31] Speaker 1: but it felt like doing something like I still had control.
[17:36] Speaker 1: My laptop was still on the kitchen table. I opened
[17:39] Speaker 1: it as I walked past, booting up the file system
[17:42] Speaker 1: before I even kicked my boots off. The plan was simple,
[17:47] Speaker 1: pull the upload, scrub it from the app, maybe even
[17:50] Speaker 1: write a warning, something vague that wouldn't get me laughed
[17:53] Speaker 1: off the platform. But then I saw the notifications, dozens
[17:59] Speaker 1: of email subject lines in bold. Something was in my
[18:04] Speaker 1: hallway last night. I saw her. She watched me sleep.
[18:09] Speaker 1: It knocked until three forty two. Then it started climbing.
[18:15] Speaker 1: My hands went cold. One message had an attachment, a
[18:19] Speaker 1: blurry phone photo, the edge of a blackened head, blurred
[18:23] Speaker 1: from movement too familiar to dismiss. Sixteen floors up. I
[18:31] Speaker 1: sat there, staring at it. This was my fault, not
[18:36] Speaker 1: because I recorded it. That was a fluke, an accident.
[18:41] Speaker 1: But I'd uploaded it, I'd left it public, ignored the
[18:45] Speaker 1: early warnings. I doubted myself because the alternative was accepting
[18:50] Speaker 1: something I couldn't explain. I should have pulled it days ago.
[18:56] Speaker 1: Now I had my chance. I didn't know if delete
[19:00] Speaker 1: it would nundo anything. Maybe the damage was already done,
[19:04] Speaker 1: Maybe whatever this was had already spread. But if I
[19:08] Speaker 1: left it up, more people would hear it, more people
[19:12] Speaker 1: would see it, more people would bring it back. So
[19:20] Speaker 1: I made the call. I pulled the file from the
[19:23] Speaker 1: content manager, sent takedown requests to mirror sites, deleted the
[19:28] Speaker 1: rawer uploads from the appcue everywhere I could find it.
[19:32] Speaker 1: I wiped it. It was over. I sat back in
[19:37] Speaker 1: my chair. My phone lit up in the dark. I
[19:45] Speaker 1: reached for it with shaking hands. New notifications from listeners.
[19:53] Speaker 1: Whatever you did, thank you, it's quiet again. The notifications
[20:00] Speaker 1: kept coming in, all from people who'd messaged before, the
[20:04] Speaker 1: ones who'd said they were being followed, stalked, haunted. Relief
[20:09] Speaker 1: washed over me, feeling like, at at least Selva's something
[20:13] Speaker 1: good from this whole thing. But my night was just
[20:17] Speaker 1: getting started. I didn't sleep, I couldn't. Instead, I stayed
[20:24] Speaker 1: on the hallway floor, legs cramping back, pressed against the wall,
[20:29] Speaker 1: every light in the apartment blazing. I kept the laptop
[20:33] Speaker 1: open on my knees, the inbox still flooding with new messages.
[20:38] Speaker 1: Strangers thanking me, telling me the knocking had stopped, that
[20:42] Speaker 1: they were finally safe. But inside my own apartment, something
[20:48] Speaker 1: was beginning to stir. It started subtly, like a change
[20:53] Speaker 1: in barometric pressure, the temperature dipped, the buzzing from the
[20:58] Speaker 1: fridge stuttered. I heard a soft creak in the ceiling
[21:02] Speaker 1: above me. It was in a pipe or settling joist,
[21:06] Speaker 1: with a deliberate sound of weight shifting across all the wood.
[21:12] Speaker 1: I froze for minutes, nothing, Then a whisper of motion
[21:19] Speaker 1: against the far wall, the sound of something just brushing
[21:23] Speaker 1: the paint with the tips of his fingers. When the
[21:27] Speaker 1: tapping came, it was so faint I almost missed it. Tick,
[21:33] Speaker 1: tick tick. I turned toward the sound, and my stomach sank.
[21:39] Speaker 1: It was coming from the living room window. I stood cautiously, slowly,
[21:47] Speaker 1: just enough to catch a glimpse through the frosty glass,
[21:51] Speaker 1: just a faint impression of movement, like some one had
[21:54] Speaker 1: passed by a moment earlier. I backed away, heart hammering.
[22:00] Speaker 1: The tappings shifted, now coming from the back door, then
[22:05] Speaker 1: from the ceiling hatch. Every surface of the apartment seemed
[22:10] Speaker 1: to carry the sound, like a tuning fork, as if
[22:13] Speaker 1: something were circling inside. The walls, growing bolder by the second.
[22:17] Speaker 1: Testing the house for the weakest point of entry, the
[22:21] Speaker 1: lights dimmed, as if the apartment itself were exhaling. I
[22:26] Speaker 1: couldn't tell if it wanted to come in or if
[22:30] Speaker 1: it was already here. That question answered itself A moment later.
[22:37] Speaker 1: The lights above me dimmed again, not in a flicker,
[22:40] Speaker 1: but in a slow, deliberate pulse, like the apartment was
[22:44] Speaker 1: breathing somewhere deep in the walls. The plaster shifted with
[22:48] Speaker 1: a muffled thud, and then another, each one closer than
[22:52] Speaker 1: the last. Something large was crawling its way toward the
[22:56] Speaker 1: center of the room. I stayed perfectly still. Then the
[23:03] Speaker 1: dry wall to my left bulged outward, just slightly, a
[23:08] Speaker 1: shallow swell, like someone was pressing a hand against it
[23:12] Speaker 1: from the other side. I stared as the bulge drifted
[23:16] Speaker 1: along the wall, dragging down toward the floor. Something ran
[23:20] Speaker 1: his fingers across the baseboard, slow and lingering, tracing the
[23:25] Speaker 1: shape of the apartment. A soft hiss followed the unmistakable
[23:30] Speaker 1: sound of breathing sliding from behind paint. I packed up
[23:35] Speaker 1: until my spine hid the opposite wall. The thing in
[23:39] Speaker 1: my home shifted directions, scuttling up towards the ceiling. The
[23:44] Speaker 1: plaster bowed overhead, dust drifting down in thin gray streams.
[23:49] Speaker 1: Whatever it was, it wasn't bound to flows or gravity.
[23:54] Speaker 1: It moved like a spider through insulation and beams, pushing
[23:58] Speaker 1: against the structure, testing how thin the barriers were. The
[24:02] Speaker 1: ceiling vent rattled, then the metal grill bent outward. Long
[24:07] Speaker 1: fingers had hooked into the slats and was prying them apart.
[24:12] Speaker 1: One slat snapped, another warped. A black knuckle shaped silhouette
[24:17] Speaker 1: pressed through skin, stretched thin over something too sharp to
[24:21] Speaker 1: be bone. I scrambled across the floor, heard timmering so
[24:26] Speaker 1: hard I heard it in my ears. The vents split wider.
[24:31] Speaker 1: A hand slid out, long gray wrinkled nails like splinters
[24:38] Speaker 1: of obsidian. It curled slowly, searching the air, the way
[24:44] Speaker 1: someone might test water before stepping in. It rotated toward me,
[24:49] Speaker 1: knuckles cracking, reaching, and then it stopped, frozen mid motion,
[25:01] Speaker 1: because it was listening the same way it listened to
[25:04] Speaker 1: the silence in the woods. I covered my mouth with
[25:08] Speaker 1: both hands, shaking so hard my teeth clicked. Then a sound.
[25:18] Speaker 1: It wasn't from me or the thing, but from the table,
[25:23] Speaker 1: A sharp ping. My phone, still face up near the door,
[25:28] Speaker 1: lit up with a notification. The sound cut through the
[25:32] Speaker 1: silence like a siren. Instantly something shifted, A blur of
[25:37] Speaker 1: motion too fast, A process shot across the room. The
[25:42] Speaker 1: hand or part of it lashed out from the dark
[25:46] Speaker 1: and struck the phone with surgical precision crack. The screen
[25:52] Speaker 1: shattered inward like it had been struck with a mallet.
[25:56] Speaker 1: The phone skidded across the floor, buzzing once before dying.
[26:01] Speaker 1: I covered my mouth with both hands, paralyzed. Then another
[26:07] Speaker 1: pin from the laptop, an email. It shifted again, a
[26:14] Speaker 1: thing in the walls. I saw the hand jut out
[26:17] Speaker 1: once more, just inches from the keyboard, now fingers twitching,
[26:22] Speaker 1: hovering for this time, it didn't strike. It paused, almost curious.
[26:34] Speaker 1: The same force that crossed the phone in a single
[26:37] Speaker 1: blow now hovered in silence, tense, with restraint. There was
[26:42] Speaker 1: a recognition in the stillness, the hand flat in its
[26:48] Speaker 1: palm on the ground. I didn't dare move, scared to
[26:52] Speaker 1: even just stir the air. Once flat, the arms swept
[26:57] Speaker 1: around in wide arcs around the word room. It was
[27:01] Speaker 1: searching large motions, sometimes far away, with suddenly inches from
[27:08] Speaker 1: my heel. If it were death, I could have jumped
[27:12] Speaker 1: rolled away with good timing, but I was still frozen
[27:16] Speaker 1: to the spot, and soon it bumped into my body.
[27:23] Speaker 1: On contact, it went frantic sweeping motions over me, mapping
[27:29] Speaker 1: me until it figured out who I was, my angle
[27:31] Speaker 1: on the floor, the direction I was locking. It latched
[27:36] Speaker 1: onto my wrists tightly, but didn't crush my limb like
[27:39] Speaker 1: I expected. It pulled a taut motion that gave me
[27:44] Speaker 1: no choice but to follow. Less like a dog on
[27:47] Speaker 1: a leash and more like an escalator. I couldn't leave, unwilling,
[27:53] Speaker 1: leading me to what I was curious about before my laptop.
[28:00] Speaker 1: All the while, thoughts swam in my head, piecing together
[28:04] Speaker 1: context from this absurd situation. It hadn't come when I
[28:09] Speaker 1: uploaded the audio, not when people listened to it, not
[28:13] Speaker 1: even when they started writing to me terrified. It only
[28:18] Speaker 1: came after I took down the video, when I broke
[28:21] Speaker 1: the chain, when I tried to stop it from spreading.
[28:25] Speaker 1: That's when it noticed me. I looked over at the
[28:31] Speaker 1: laptop now glowing in front of me, and for the
[28:35] Speaker 1: first time since this all started, the idea of dying
[28:39] Speaker 1: didn't seem like the worst option. If this thing could
[28:43] Speaker 1: be stopped by ending the transmission, by letting it end
[28:46] Speaker 1: with me, maybe that was the answer. Maybe it was
[28:52] Speaker 1: worth it, but the moment passed. Survival dug its claws in.
[28:59] Speaker 1: I sat down, and the moment it felt that it
[29:03] Speaker 1: released its grip on my wrist, but horverd near my
[29:07] Speaker 1: head in a threat that was easy to read. Upload
[29:13] Speaker 1: or die. Fingers trembling, I opened the app dashboard. The
[29:20] Speaker 1: deleted video was still there, sitting quietly in the recycled bin.
[29:25] Speaker 1: I hovered over the upload button. Then I clicked it
[29:31] Speaker 1: restored all the metadata. The upload bar crawled from the
[29:37] Speaker 1: wall behind me. I heard another creak, louder, now closer.
[29:44] Speaker 1: I didn't turn around. I kept my eyes on the screen.
[29:48] Speaker 1: As the progress bar climbed thirty percent, fifty seventy two.
[29:54] Speaker 1: The air around me felt like it was pressing inward.
[29:59] Speaker 1: It was still here, It knew, it was waiting to
[30:04] Speaker 1: see if I go through with it. Ninety four percent.
[30:09] Speaker 1: A pause, then complete. The video went live, and in
[30:18] Speaker 1: an instant, everything stopped. No more tapping, no more movement,
[30:25] Speaker 1: no more pressure in the walls. The lights brightened, as
[30:29] Speaker 1: if a film had been peeled away from the bulbs.
[30:33] Speaker 1: It was gone, and for the first time in what
[30:37] Speaker 1: felt like days, sound, beautiful, living, sound. I exhaled, really
[30:47] Speaker 1: exhaled like I hadn't in days, and I hated how
[30:53] Speaker 1: relieved I felt. Life went on. People forgot, moved on,
[31:06] Speaker 1: slept again, but I didn't, not really. I still wake
[31:13] Speaker 1: up every day and open my laptop. It's automatic now,
[31:18] Speaker 1: muscle memory. I don't check emails, don't check socials. Just
[31:24] Speaker 1: the view count three eighteen, three twenty two, three thirty eight.
[31:31] Speaker 1: Every number feels heavier than the last. I don't see
[31:35] Speaker 1: them as just numbers. Each one is a person, a victim.
[31:43] Speaker 1: I still record sometimes to keep myself sane, short trips
[31:48] Speaker 1: close to the town, never at night, and I never
[31:53] Speaker 1: upload the raw audio. I listen to every second. I
[31:58] Speaker 1: triple check the wave form. I scrubbed the background for
[32:01] Speaker 1: anything that doesn't belong. And when the clock hits three
[32:05] Speaker 1: forty one a m. I make sure I'm in bed,
[32:10] Speaker 1: ear plugs in lights on, eyes shut tight, because I
[32:16] Speaker 1: know now it's not the silence that gets you, it's
[32:23] Speaker 1: what follows
