[0:01] Speaker 1: Liam and I have been planning the trip for months,
[0:05] Speaker 1: just the two of us, no girlfriends, no responsibilities, just
[0:09] Speaker 1: a long overdue weekend to disconnect. We picked the cheapest
[0:14] Speaker 1: cabin we could find, tucked in the tree thick edge
[0:17] Speaker 1: of some forgotten lake up north. Fishing drinks, maybe a
[0:22] Speaker 1: little weed, the kind of lazy, directionless break we both
[0:26] Speaker 1: pretended we didn't desperately need. I'd just quit my job,
[0:32] Speaker 1: burnt out. Liam's engagement had fallen apart two weeks before
[0:36] Speaker 1: the wedding. We didn't talk about either. The next morning,
[0:43] Speaker 1: I woke up early, couldn't sleep. Liam followed me down
[0:47] Speaker 1: to the dark, leary eyed, both of us clutching mugs
[0:51] Speaker 1: of awful instant coffee. That's when we saw it, the water,
[1:01] Speaker 1: barely visible through the fog. A house, A full on house,
[1:08] Speaker 1: two stories, pale siding, sharp roof, perfectly symmetrical, and definitely
[1:14] Speaker 1: not there the day before. Maybe we were too hungover
[1:19] Speaker 1: to notice. Liam said, maybe someone built it overnight. I joked,
[1:25] Speaker 1: but the chill of my spine didn't match my tone.
[1:29] Speaker 1: We watched it for a while. It didn't move, flicker,
[1:33] Speaker 1: or fade. It just sat there, still and waiting. We
[1:39] Speaker 1: couldn't see a dark or a path leading to it.
[1:42] Speaker 1: It was just there. Eventually, curiosity got the better of us.
[1:50] Speaker 1: We climbed into the old metal rowboat. The cabin provided
[1:54] Speaker 1: or squeaking with every pull. The lake was calm, the
[1:58] Speaker 1: surface didn't rip. Even the fog seemed thick and deliberate,
[2:03] Speaker 1: as if it wanted to hide something. As we rowed,
[2:08] Speaker 1: I remember thinking, maybe we're about to ruin someone's very
[2:13] Speaker 1: private weekend. The fog parted like a curtain the closer
[2:18] Speaker 1: we got. It sat dead center on the water, no docks,
[2:25] Speaker 1: no stilt, no visible support, just the two story colonial
[2:30] Speaker 1: style house, perfectly above the glass of reflection, as if
[2:35] Speaker 1: it had been cut and pasted into the world without explanation.
[2:39] Speaker 1: Liam was the first to say it there's no foundation.
[2:46] Speaker 1: I nodded, there's no reason it should be standing. We
[2:52] Speaker 1: circled it in the boat, but there was no clear
[2:56] Speaker 1: entry point, just still water and the low whisper of wind.
[3:01] Speaker 1: And then, miraculously we spotted a flat wooden platform hidden
[3:06] Speaker 1: by the shadows beneath the water. In front of the
[3:08] Speaker 1: porch steps a place just wide enough to climb onto.
[3:14] Speaker 1: We tied off and stepped onto the platform. It didn't
[3:18] Speaker 1: creak or sway. It felt impossibly solid. The front door
[3:24] Speaker 1: opened with the first twist of the knob. Inside was warmth.
[3:32] Speaker 1: I don't mean just temperature. It felt like a loved home,
[3:36] Speaker 1: like someone had been expecting us. Lamps glowed in every room,
[3:42] Speaker 1: soft orange glow, washing over clean furniture and polished hardwood.
[3:47] Speaker 1: A fire crackled in a stone hearth despite no visible
[3:51] Speaker 1: chimney outside. The smell of fresh bread hung in the air.
[3:57] Speaker 1: The dining table was set for two full place already prepared,
[4:02] Speaker 1: roast chicken, vegetables, mashed potatoes, still steaming like they'd just
[4:07] Speaker 1: been prepared. Our stomachs growled in unison, but neither of
[4:12] Speaker 1: us dared touch it. Maybe this is one of those
[4:16] Speaker 1: theme rentals. Liam said, like a weird Airbnb experience. I
[4:23] Speaker 1: was too stunned to respond. The place was stunning, leagues
[4:28] Speaker 1: above the glorified shed we'd rented. We moved from room
[4:32] Speaker 1: to room quiet Now every bed was made, clawsets full
[4:37] Speaker 1: of clothes, neutral, unlabeled but folded with care. Framed photos
[4:43] Speaker 1: hung along the hallways, but the faces were impossible to
[4:47] Speaker 1: make out, like they'd been smudged or captured. Mid motion,
[4:51] Speaker 1: familiar an alien at the same time. Everything had that
[4:56] Speaker 1: once loved feeling, old but clean, used but treasured. The
[5:02] Speaker 1: kitchen was fully stocked, the fridge cold and humming, cabinets
[5:07] Speaker 1: filled with dry goods, even a fruit ball on the
[5:10] Speaker 1: counter apples waxy and perfect. We stood in the living room,
[5:16] Speaker 1: surrounded by silence and comfort. This place is nicer than
[5:21] Speaker 1: our cabin Liam said, by a mile. No mold, no
[5:26] Speaker 1: wood rot, no smell, like a raccoon died under the floorboards.
[5:30] Speaker 1: I added. We laughed, but the feeling crept over us
[5:36] Speaker 1: that we didn't belong. This was someone's place, and we
[5:40] Speaker 1: were walking it like a public space. We didn't stay long.
[5:46] Speaker 1: The air inside that house had away of numbing time,
[5:49] Speaker 1: like everything outside. The walls didn't exist. But when I
[5:53] Speaker 1: checked my watch, nearly two hours had passed. The food
[5:58] Speaker 1: on the table hadn't cooled. Liam whistled low, All right,
[6:04] Speaker 1: enough ghost, real estate, and s head back before dark, yeah,
[6:09] Speaker 1: I said, though my voice didn't sound convincing even to me.
[6:15] Speaker 1: I didn't want to admit how the place made me
[6:17] Speaker 1: feel safe, almost hypnotically, so, like leaving would be wrong somehow.
[6:27] Speaker 1: He was already at the door you coming, Yeah, right
[6:31] Speaker 1: behind you. He stepped out first, boots thumping lightly on
[6:37] Speaker 1: the wooden platform. The sound was grounding real. Then I
[6:43] Speaker 1: tried to follow and hit something that wasn't there. The
[6:50] Speaker 1: air had hardened, not like wind or resistance. It was
[6:54] Speaker 1: like walking face first into glass. My whole body jolted backward,
[7:00] Speaker 1: My breath caught in my throat. What the hell? I
[7:04] Speaker 1: pressed my hands forward. They flattened against nothing. The door
[7:09] Speaker 1: frame was right in front of me, open, but I
[7:13] Speaker 1: couldn't cross it. It was like the house itself was
[7:17] Speaker 1: pushing back. Matt William's voice floated through the fog, muffled.
[7:25] Speaker 1: It hit the barrier again, harder this time. I can't
[7:29] Speaker 1: get out. What are you talking about? I can't get out.
[7:35] Speaker 1: Then everything changed. Every light in the house went out
[7:41] Speaker 1: all at once. The warmth bled away, The fire hissed
[7:45] Speaker 1: out mid crackle. In the sudden silence, the sound of
[7:50] Speaker 1: my own breathing filled the room, quick, sharp, and too loud.
[7:55] Speaker 1: The moonlight filtered through the windows in weak silver ribbons, illuminates,
[8:00] Speaker 1: eating motes of dust that hadn't been there a moment ago. Liam.
[8:06] Speaker 1: My voice sounded small, No answer, just the distant rhythmic
[8:12] Speaker 1: lap of water against the foundation, a sound that somehow
[8:16] Speaker 1: felt closer than it should. Liam. I shouted, panic rising.
[8:22] Speaker 1: My heart beat thudded in my ears. Footsteps thudded across
[8:28] Speaker 1: the porch. Then the door swung wide like poured back
[8:32] Speaker 1: in around him, like someone had hit a switch. The
[8:36] Speaker 1: fire roared again, the air warmed. Everything was normal. Liam
[8:44] Speaker 1: stood in the doorway, eyebrows raised. What the hell's your problem?
[8:50] Speaker 1: I stumbled forward, gripping the frame. I couldn't leave the
[8:56] Speaker 1: air it, I stopped. How insane I sounded. He looked
[9:03] Speaker 1: past me, scanning the bright, cozy room. You sure you
[9:08] Speaker 1: didn't just freak yourself out? Man, You've been johmpy ever
[9:11] Speaker 1: since we got here. I'm serious, I said, shaking my head.
[9:17] Speaker 1: It was like hitting a wall. He juggled uneasily, clapping
[9:23] Speaker 1: my shoulder. Yeah, a spooky, invisible wall in the middle
[9:28] Speaker 1: of a magic lake. Maybe he's up on the edibles, huh.
[9:33] Speaker 1: But even as he laughed, I caught it the way
[9:37] Speaker 1: his eyes darted toward the open door behind him, then
[9:41] Speaker 1: back to me. He didn't say it out loud, but
[9:45] Speaker 1: I could tell he felt it to the air outside
[9:51] Speaker 1: was heavy, the kind of stillness that waits. We kept
[9:57] Speaker 1: testing it, thinking maybe it was just the fluke, some
[10:01] Speaker 1: bizarre sensory thing, or maybe we were overtired. But now
[10:08] Speaker 1: every time we tried to leave together, shouldered to shoulder,
[10:12] Speaker 1: we both hit it an invisible wall, like the air
[10:16] Speaker 1: had been vacuum sealed. No resistance, no sound, just solid nothing.
[10:23] Speaker 1: The first time it happened to both of us at once,
[10:26] Speaker 1: we looked at each other and said nothing, just backed
[10:29] Speaker 1: up back into the house. So we tried splitting it
[10:33] Speaker 1: up again. I left first, made it to the porch.
[10:38] Speaker 1: He followed, blocked, and the moment I crossed the threshold,
[10:43] Speaker 1: the lights flicked back on, warm, cozy, like nothing had happened.
[10:50] Speaker 1: Then we reversed it. He went out fine, I followed,
[10:56] Speaker 1: blocked again. It became clear you could leave, but only
[11:02] Speaker 1: if some one else stayed behind. One must remain. I
[11:08] Speaker 1: don't know how the house enforced that rule, but it
[11:11] Speaker 1: did every single time, no matter how we tried to
[11:15] Speaker 1: game it. Eventually we stopped trying and sat in the
[11:19] Speaker 1: living room surrounded by ticking clocks and two perfect furniture.
[11:25] Speaker 1: The crackling fireplace didn't burn down, and the food and
[11:28] Speaker 1: the table never got cold. It was all still waiting.
[11:35] Speaker 1: Liam was the one who spoke first. I'll go, he said,
[11:41] Speaker 1: I'll get help, I'll be fast. I didn't like it,
[11:45] Speaker 1: but he was already walking to the door, and as
[11:49] Speaker 1: he crossed the threshold, the light didn't just fade. It curdled.
[11:56] Speaker 1: Warm gold drained into thin gray moonlight that coated everything
[12:00] Speaker 1: like dust. The fire died without smoke. The smell of
[12:05] Speaker 1: bread soured to something metallic and old. The temperature dropped
[12:09] Speaker 1: five degrees and kept falling. I tried turning on the lamps.
[12:15] Speaker 1: Nothing switches clicked, bulbs stayed dead. I even tried the
[12:20] Speaker 1: lighter from the kitchen drawer, but when I flicked it,
[12:24] Speaker 1: nothing sparked. So I started walking. At first, everything looked
[12:32] Speaker 1: the same, but age seemed to infect the place. The
[12:36] Speaker 1: once pristine wooden ornaments peeled and flaked into husks that
[12:41] Speaker 1: only resembled what they once were. Then I opened a
[12:45] Speaker 1: door that should have led to the hallway and found
[12:48] Speaker 1: a staircase narrow, pitch black. I didn't go down. I
[12:55] Speaker 1: closed the door, took a breath, opened it again. The
[13:00] Speaker 1: hallway was back. I stood there for a while, just breathing, listening.
[13:08] Speaker 1: The sounds came slowly, like the house had been holding
[13:12] Speaker 1: its breath and finally let it out. Soft creaks, then
[13:17] Speaker 1: the hum of something shifting, almost organic, like bones realigning
[13:22] Speaker 1: in the walls. There was movement too, at first, just
[13:28] Speaker 1: flickers at the edges of my vision, a shadow passing
[13:32] Speaker 1: behind a doorway I hadn't opened, Something crawling along the
[13:36] Speaker 1: ceiling fast enough to make me question if I saw
[13:39] Speaker 1: anything at all. I turned corners that should have led
[13:43] Speaker 1: to the kitchen and ended up back in the foyer.
[13:46] Speaker 1: Doors led to wrong places, windows showed only fog. Eventually
[13:53] Speaker 1: I gave up trying to map it. I picked a room,
[13:57] Speaker 1: a small guest bedroom I hadn't seen before, and shut
[14:00] Speaker 1: the door behind me. It was bitterly cold. I climbed
[14:05] Speaker 1: into bed, fully dressed, clutching the thick covers to my chin.
[14:10] Speaker 1: I heard breathing, not mine, slow, deep grasping. Somewhere in
[14:17] Speaker 1: the walls. I heard scratching, two nails or claws, dragging, pacing.
[14:25] Speaker 1: Once something brushed my legs under the covers, slow and deliberate.
[14:30] Speaker 1: I didn't move, didn't breathe, I just waited. No noise
[14:36] Speaker 1: after that, just silence. So complete. It buzzed in my ears.
[14:44] Speaker 1: I don't remember falling asleep. I must have passed out
[14:47] Speaker 1: from exhaustion. I woke up hours later, cramped, teeth chattering,
[14:53] Speaker 1: heart pounding, like I hadn't rested at all. The room
[14:58] Speaker 1: was darker than before, and the door I came in
[15:01] Speaker 1: through was gone now on the other side of the room.
[15:10] Speaker 1: I stretched off, ready to look around, and felt my
[15:14] Speaker 1: stomach curl. I was starving, not just hungry. It was
[15:20] Speaker 1: like something had reached inside during the night and scooped
[15:23] Speaker 1: up more than food. The lights were still dead, the
[15:27] Speaker 1: fireplace remained cold, ash the food from before gone missing,
[15:33] Speaker 1: like it had never existed. I tried the taps. Nothing
[15:38] Speaker 1: came out, no hiss, no drip, just silence. The windows
[15:44] Speaker 1: still showed the lake fog blanketed and still, but the
[15:48] Speaker 1: sky hung in perpetual dusk. The moon hovered low, never rising,
[15:54] Speaker 1: never falling. The shadows stayed long stretched. At first I
[16:00] Speaker 1: thought a day had passed, then two. Now I wasn't
[16:04] Speaker 1: sure if time was moving at all. I started keeping track.
[16:09] Speaker 1: I used the state knife to carve a tally into
[16:12] Speaker 1: the kitchen table every time I slept. There were five lines.
[16:16] Speaker 1: Now maybe six. One of them was deeper, fresher, but
[16:22] Speaker 1: I didn't remember making it. It didn't let me rest anymore.
[16:29] Speaker 1: Every time I closed my eyes, I felt it watching,
[16:33] Speaker 1: not from the darkness, but everywhere, like the walls were
[16:37] Speaker 1: its skin and the beams were its spine. I could
[16:41] Speaker 1: hear it breathing through the grain of the floorboards, smell
[16:45] Speaker 1: it sweet wet rot, even when I pressed a pillow
[16:49] Speaker 1: over my face. At first, I stayed in one room.
[16:54] Speaker 1: Then I tried moving, hoping to outrun it, but the
[16:58] Speaker 1: layout wouldn't stay still. Doors opened, the dead ends, staircases twist,
[17:04] Speaker 1: Mirrors didn't reflect the right version of the room, and
[17:07] Speaker 1: for similar of what the room was meant to be like.
[17:10] Speaker 1: It was half guessing the worst o the rooms I
[17:14] Speaker 1: didn't remember entering. I'd blink and be standing in a
[17:19] Speaker 1: narrow crawl space, breathing hard, hand scraped raw, like I'd
[17:23] Speaker 1: been clawing at the walls. I once woke up inside
[17:27] Speaker 1: a closet, curled around a pile of clothing that didn't
[17:30] Speaker 1: belong to me. The thing moved differently when I was exhausted.
[17:36] Speaker 1: It didn't bang or scream, It stalked. Sometimes I'd hear
[17:42] Speaker 1: it just outside the door, slow steps that paused too long.
[17:47] Speaker 1: Once I saw a shape under the crack, like something crawling,
[17:51] Speaker 1: flat bellied across the hallway, dragging limbs. I locked the
[17:56] Speaker 1: door that night. It tapped slow and patient, and on
[18:00] Speaker 1: the other side hours of soft tapping just beyond the wood.
[18:06] Speaker 1: One night I found muddy footprints in the kitchen, small, barefoot,
[18:11] Speaker 1: like a child. They circled the room, then stopped at
[18:15] Speaker 1: the base of the bed. I didn't hear it, didn't
[18:20] Speaker 1: see it, but it was there inches from me while
[18:24] Speaker 1: I slept. At some point I lost count of the days.
[18:30] Speaker 1: The first few talies on the table were neat straight.
[18:34] Speaker 1: I even tried marking time by the dim shift of
[18:37] Speaker 1: light outside, but that stopped making sense fast. The sky
[18:42] Speaker 1: didn't move here, it stayed caught in that same silver
[18:46] Speaker 1: half light. I thought I carved thirty marks, maybe forty.
[18:52] Speaker 1: But somewhere in the blur of time I stopped sleeping,
[18:57] Speaker 1: or I started sleeping without knowing. I started scratching marks
[19:01] Speaker 1: on the wall instead, just to feel something different, something rough.
[19:07] Speaker 1: But even the walls began to reject it. The scratches
[19:10] Speaker 1: would vanish when I looked away. One time they came back,
[19:14] Speaker 1: but moved higher, too high to reach. The house was
[19:19] Speaker 1: keeping its own count. I hadn't eaten it what must
[19:23] Speaker 1: have been weeks. My stomach ate constantly gnawed at itself,
[19:29] Speaker 1: no food, no water. But I didn't die. My mouth
[19:35] Speaker 1: stayed dry, my lips split, my head spun when I
[19:38] Speaker 1: stood too fast, And yet I'd wake up the next morning,
[19:42] Speaker 1: still alive, still here, still hungry. It wasn't kindness. It
[19:49] Speaker 1: was cruelty, measured out one tick at a time. It
[19:54] Speaker 1: was getting bolder. The first time it touched me, I thought,
[19:59] Speaker 1: I imagined it a cold pressure on the back of
[20:02] Speaker 1: my neck. But then it brushed my ankle. When I
[20:05] Speaker 1: hid under the bed. It gripped my arm once while
[20:08] Speaker 1: I slept, hard enough to leave finger shaped bruises. I
[20:13] Speaker 1: looked in the mirror and saw no one behind me.
[20:16] Speaker 1: Now I heard it breathing at night, not just through
[20:19] Speaker 1: the walls or doorway from my pillow. One day or
[20:25] Speaker 1: whatever day meant, I saw a figure standing just beyond
[20:29] Speaker 1: the kitchen doorway, not moving, just watching. It had no face,
[20:36] Speaker 1: just the suggestion of one, a dint where her mouth
[20:40] Speaker 1: should have been, a shimmer of breath where eyes might blink.
[20:45] Speaker 1: I couldn't tell if I'd gone insane, or if insanity
[20:48] Speaker 1: would have been a massy Then finally it cornered me.
[20:56] Speaker 1: I was running again, trying to get to the staircase
[20:59] Speaker 1: that used to lead to the bedroom. It ended in
[21:02] Speaker 1: a wall. When I turned, it was there. It didn't
[21:09] Speaker 1: charge at me. It raised a hand, pointed at me.
[21:14] Speaker 1: The ceiling bent around it like gravity itself was drawn
[21:17] Speaker 1: to it. I backed into a corner, shaking, whispering anything
[21:22] Speaker 1: I could remember, prayers, apologies, my own name, over and over,
[21:27] Speaker 1: like a shield. It stepped forward, closer. The temperature dropped,
[21:35] Speaker 1: My breath hitched and crystallized in the air. It reached
[21:39] Speaker 1: out fingertips about to brush my chest. The lights snapped on, warm,
[21:48] Speaker 1: full blinding, the fireplace raw to life, the smell of
[21:54] Speaker 1: cinnamon baking bread. I dropped to my knees, sobbing. The
[21:59] Speaker 1: thing was gone. I wasn't alone, Hey, A voice called,
[22:07] Speaker 1: I locked up. My friend stood in the doorway, back
[22:11] Speaker 1: lit by the sudden warmth of the house. He was
[22:15] Speaker 1: breathing hard, grinning in disbelief, like he'd found me after
[22:19] Speaker 1: a long game of hide and seek. Dude, he said,
[22:24] Speaker 1: you're right, I couldn't speak. My throat felt torn raw.
[22:31] Speaker 1: Every inch of my body saw like I'd been wrung
[22:34] Speaker 1: out and left a dry I pushed myself upright, still
[22:38] Speaker 1: on my knees, eyes adjusting to the impossible light. He
[22:44] Speaker 1: crossed the room, steadying me by the shoulders. What the
[22:48] Speaker 1: hell happened? I was gone, like maybe two hours. I
[22:52] Speaker 1: called the guy who rented us the cabin, but he
[22:55] Speaker 1: had no clue what I was talking about. Said there
[22:57] Speaker 1: was no house on the lake. Thought I was with
[23:00] Speaker 1: him two hours? I crooked, yeah, left just past noon.
[23:08] Speaker 1: It's not even three. Yet that hit harder than the
[23:13] Speaker 1: cold ever did. I looked in the mirror and hid
[23:17] Speaker 1: my reaction to what I saw. I hadn't aged a day,
[23:22] Speaker 1: but I'd lived a lifetime. I stared at the fireplace,
[23:27] Speaker 1: the plate of food reset perfectly, the soft tom of
[23:31] Speaker 1: peace back in the air. I'd carved more than thirty
[23:35] Speaker 1: marks on the table. I'd felt my sanity stretched thin,
[23:39] Speaker 1: and yet he said two hours. I didn't even argue,
[23:46] Speaker 1: just closed my eyes for a moment. Then I turned
[23:50] Speaker 1: to him, voice low, Look, I just I need to
[23:55] Speaker 1: get out of here, just for a little bit. I
[23:59] Speaker 1: haven't eaten or let I messed up. Man. He frowned suddenly, uneasy.
[24:07] Speaker 1: I thought you said we couldn't both leave. No, I
[24:11] Speaker 1: said quickly, that's not it. We can leave, but not together.
[24:15] Speaker 1: One of us has to stay behind. That's the rule.
[24:20] Speaker 1: He hesitated. So if I stay, you'd be fine. I'll
[24:27] Speaker 1: row back, grab supplies, maybe talk to someone else, be
[24:31] Speaker 1: gone maybe twenty minutes. Tops. His eyes flickered toward the door. Seriously,
[24:39] Speaker 1: I said, you don't have to do anything, just hang out,
[24:43] Speaker 1: enjoy the food here. He gave a weak laugh at that.
[24:48] Speaker 1: That's insane, You know that, Yeah, I said, already halfway
[24:53] Speaker 1: to the door. But we're dealing with it, right. A pause,
[25:00] Speaker 1: then a reluctant nod. All right, go. I didn't look back,
[25:09] Speaker 1: didn't check the sea. If the house dimmed behind me,
[25:12] Speaker 1: I just stepped out into the fog, let the door
[25:15] Speaker 1: swing shut, and walked down to the boat. The water
[25:21] Speaker 1: lapped gently against the boat as I neared the half
[25:24] Speaker 1: way point across the lake, and already I felt the
[25:28] Speaker 1: weight in my chest shift, like something was being peeled
[25:32] Speaker 1: off me layer by layer. I stopped rowing, turned my head.
[25:39] Speaker 1: The house sat still on the water, perfectly scentered but
[25:45] Speaker 1: the lights they were gone. The soft golden glow that
[25:50] Speaker 1: once made it look like a dream had vanished. Its
[25:54] Speaker 1: silhouette stood darker than the mist around it, every window
[25:58] Speaker 1: and lifeless square. He was in there now, alone, and
[26:05] Speaker 1: I'd known it would happen. I'd let it happen. I
[26:10] Speaker 1: dropped the oars, let the boat drift, and tried to
[26:13] Speaker 1: convince myself there was still time. Maybe he'd figure a
[26:17] Speaker 1: way out. Maybe I was wrong about the rules. Maybe,
[26:22] Speaker 1: just maybe, if I waited, he'd be on the porch waving, laughing, saying,
[26:29] Speaker 1: this place is messed up, man, But I handled it.
[26:33] Speaker 1: I waited. I watched the house remained still cold, untouched
[26:41] Speaker 1: by time or warmth. I rowed the rest of the
[26:45] Speaker 1: way in silence. Back in the cabin, everything felt too loud.
[26:51] Speaker 1: The creak of the wood, the hum of the refrigerator,
[26:55] Speaker 1: the crunch of my footsteps all too loud after what
[26:59] Speaker 1: I'd just left. I tried to eat. The food turned
[27:03] Speaker 1: to ash in my mouth, gilt ripped away any semblance
[27:07] Speaker 1: of appetite. I stood by the window, watched the lake,
[27:12] Speaker 1: watched the dark shape where the house waited. I told
[27:16] Speaker 1: myself I could back at sunrise, rest up a bit
[27:20] Speaker 1: for my turn back in there. Then I told myself
[27:23] Speaker 1: i'd go if the lights came back on every hour.
[27:28] Speaker 1: I checked nothing. I went to the dock with the
[27:33] Speaker 1: boat ready, hand on the rope, but I didn't untie it.
[27:39] Speaker 1: I just stood there, feeling the mist curl around my ankles.
[27:44] Speaker 1: And then I started bargaining. Maybe it didn't have to
[27:49] Speaker 1: be both of us getting out. Maybe he was okay,
[27:53] Speaker 1: Maybe this was just temporary, and when I left the
[27:56] Speaker 1: house would vanish and let him go. Maybe the house
[27:59] Speaker 1: only wanted me and was fine for him. I whispered
[28:04] Speaker 1: his name once it caught in my throat like a splinter.
[28:09] Speaker 1: The guilt came in waves, shame, anger, denial. I punched
[28:15] Speaker 1: the counter, cursed him for not refusing, cursed myself for asking,
[28:20] Speaker 1: Curse the lake, the fog, everything. Then I looked out
[28:26] Speaker 1: the window one last time. Still nothing. That's when I
[28:33] Speaker 1: started lying to myself. He'd seen the dark, now, he understood,
[28:39] Speaker 1: he'd know what I went through, the walls, shifting, the breathing,
[28:43] Speaker 1: the endless not quite night. And because of that, if
[28:48] Speaker 1: I went back, if we treaded places again, he'd leave
[28:54] Speaker 1: me there. He'd have to, he'd know it's the only
[28:58] Speaker 1: way one of us walk away. So maybe leaving now
[29:03] Speaker 1: wasn't betrayal. Maybe it was the only way to make
[29:06] Speaker 1: sure I survive. That's what I told myself anyway, over
[29:12] Speaker 1: and over, until it stopped sounding like cowardice and started
[29:17] Speaker 1: sounding like salvation, a second chance. I waited until dusk
[29:23] Speaker 1: before packing my bag, fifteen minutes maybe less. Just clothed
[29:29] Speaker 1: to my phone at the door, I hesitated, looked back
[29:34] Speaker 1: at the half empty cabin, the lake beyond still, no lights,
[29:42] Speaker 1: just silence. I whispered, I'm sorry, though I wasn't sure
[29:51] Speaker 1: who I meant it for. Then I left Ey
