[0:02] Speaker 1: I was sixteen when it happened. I didn't talk about
[0:05] Speaker 1: it for a long time, but sometimes when I can't sleep,
[0:10] Speaker 1: I still go over that night in my head. I'm
[0:14] Speaker 1: older now, I've moved out and got my own place
[0:17] Speaker 1: and job, but a part of me is still anchored
[0:21] Speaker 1: to that house. There was something about it that never
[0:25] Speaker 1: made sense. We grew up in a bad area. I'm
[0:31] Speaker 1: talking burglaries, gang signs sprayed over garage stores, Cops cruising
[0:36] Speaker 1: past our streets slow enough to make it feel like
[0:38] Speaker 1: they were waiting for something to happen. I saw someone
[0:42] Speaker 1: get dragged out of their car in front of our house.
[0:44] Speaker 1: When I was thirteen. We heard gunshots a few blocks
[0:48] Speaker 1: over so often we stopped checking the news the next morning.
[0:52] Speaker 1: People broke into homes for TVs, tools, even food. It
[0:58] Speaker 1: happened all the time, but it never happened to us.
[1:06] Speaker 1: That was something I could never explain. We weren't special.
[1:11] Speaker 1: We didn't have a dog or bars on the windows.
[1:14] Speaker 1: We didn't even have a working security system. Sometimes I'd
[1:18] Speaker 1: come home and find the screen door unlatched or a
[1:21] Speaker 1: window that looked tampered with, but nothing ever came of it.
[1:26] Speaker 1: My mom would brush it off and tell me not
[1:28] Speaker 1: to worry. I tried not too, but he'd always stuck
[1:33] Speaker 1: with me. On the other hand, my old man was
[1:37] Speaker 1: gone before I even turned six. I used to ask
[1:41] Speaker 1: about him sometimes. My mom never had much to give.
[1:45] Speaker 1: She said he worked in a specialized field, and whatever
[1:49] Speaker 1: that meant. I figured it was a nice way of
[1:52] Speaker 1: saying he was mixed up in something illegal. Maybe ran
[1:56] Speaker 1: off to keep us safe or save his own skin.
[2:00] Speaker 1: I never bought the noble sacrifice angle he left us behind.
[2:06] Speaker 1: My mom worked her ass off to keep things afloat.
[2:09] Speaker 1: I watched her come home with her feet so swollen
[2:12] Speaker 1: she had to sit on the bottom step to untie
[2:14] Speaker 1: her shoes. She'd run her hand through my hair and
[2:18] Speaker 1: go check on my little brother before she even made
[2:21] Speaker 1: herself a plate. She was always tired, but never stopped trying.
[2:27] Speaker 1: I couldn't imagine walking out on that. I started stepping
[2:32] Speaker 1: in when I got old enough to see how much
[2:35] Speaker 1: she carried on her back. I didn't want my brother
[2:38] Speaker 1: growing up with a kind of resentment that built up
[2:40] Speaker 1: in me. I figured if I could keep his world calm,
[2:45] Speaker 1: maybe he wouldn't need to carry a grudge. His name
[2:50] Speaker 1: was Michael, same as our father. I remember fighting her
[2:54] Speaker 1: on it when I first heard. I was only eight,
[2:58] Speaker 1: but I remember sitting on the side of her hospital
[3:00] Speaker 1: bed saying it made my skin crawl. I didn't want
[3:04] Speaker 1: to come home and say that name again every day.
[3:07] Speaker 1: I didn't want to picture that man every time my
[3:10] Speaker 1: brother laughed or cried or needed help tying his shoes.
[3:15] Speaker 1: But she wouldn't budge. I called him Mikey still do
[3:22] Speaker 1: wouldn't say the full name if I could help it.
[3:26] Speaker 1: He was a good kid, though, smart, curious, always in
[3:31] Speaker 1: his own little world. My mom got the call on
[3:36] Speaker 1: a Thursday night, about twenty years ago. She didn't say
[3:41] Speaker 1: much when she entered. She only stepped out onto the
[3:44] Speaker 1: porch with her coat still on. I stood in the
[3:47] Speaker 1: kitchen watching the clock tick toward ten, already knowing what
[3:51] Speaker 1: it meant when I saw how she kept her hand
[3:54] Speaker 1: on a hip, nodding. She came back in after a while,
[3:59] Speaker 1: and before I could ask, she rubbed the side of
[4:02] Speaker 1: my face and told me she needed to leave in
[4:04] Speaker 1: the morning, some project downstate. It was part of a job,
[4:10] Speaker 1: some contract work she'd picked up to fill the gaps
[4:13] Speaker 1: that a full time gig didn't cover. It wasn't optional.
[4:19] Speaker 1: She packed fast. It wasn't a first time leaving for
[4:23] Speaker 1: a job like that, but it had never been for
[4:26] Speaker 1: a full week before. She made a list of meals
[4:30] Speaker 1: and taped it to the fridge, left cab money under
[4:33] Speaker 1: the toaster in case something happened, and showed me where
[4:36] Speaker 1: she kept the house key she used to hide in
[4:38] Speaker 1: the crawl space. In the morning, she left before the
[4:43] Speaker 1: sun came up. She stood in the hallway for a second,
[4:47] Speaker 1: watching me make toast, and said she didn't like leaving us.
[4:53] Speaker 1: I told her I knew, and I'd take care of everything.
[4:58] Speaker 1: She held on to the door for like she didn't
[5:01] Speaker 1: want to let go of it. Then she walked out
[5:04] Speaker 1: without looking back. She trusted me with a house, and
[5:10] Speaker 1: more than that, she trusted me with my key. Later
[5:18] Speaker 1: after dinner, Mikey was laying on the floor with his
[5:22] Speaker 1: knees pulled up while he scribbled into the back pages
[5:25] Speaker 1: of a note book he'd torn from school. I was
[5:28] Speaker 1: sitting on the couch flipping through channels. I wasn't watching,
[5:33] Speaker 1: but every so often I looked at him. He was
[5:36] Speaker 1: humming under his breath some off keychune he'd made up
[5:40] Speaker 1: that he never stopped repeating. He was focused on whatever
[5:44] Speaker 1: he was drawing, with a seriousness that didn't fit an
[5:48] Speaker 1: eight year old. He always had that far off focus
[5:52] Speaker 1: when he got stuck in his head. I didn't think
[5:55] Speaker 1: he was weird. I think he saw things differently than
[5:58] Speaker 1: most people, since he could form full sentences. He'd been
[6:03] Speaker 1: adamant that there was something in his room, not some one, something.
[6:11] Speaker 1: I remember him telling mom that it whispered to her
[6:13] Speaker 1: while she slept. Said he woke up one night and
[6:17] Speaker 1: saw it petting her hair. She didn't know what to
[6:22] Speaker 1: say to that. Clearly it freaked her out, but she
[6:26] Speaker 1: told him he had a vivid imagination and turned the
[6:29] Speaker 1: lights on in his room for a week after that.
[6:33] Speaker 1: It didn't help. Mikey tore my train of thought when
[6:38] Speaker 1: he joined me on the couch. He sat close enough
[6:41] Speaker 1: that his shoulder touched mine. There was always his way
[6:45] Speaker 1: of asking for something without saying it outright. When I
[6:49] Speaker 1: didn't react, he finally spoke, d'ye think we could watch
[6:55] Speaker 1: a scary movie? He asked. I gave him a side eye,
[7:02] Speaker 1: Since when do you care about scary movies? I found
[7:06] Speaker 1: out about them to day in school, Me and my
[7:09] Speaker 1: friends were talking about monsters, and they said, people make
[7:12] Speaker 1: movies out of them. You already have enough problems sleeping.
[7:17] Speaker 1: I won't if I see what they really like, he
[7:20] Speaker 1: said smugly. I figured if he saw a guy in
[7:25] Speaker 1: a rubber soup pretending to be a ghost in my
[7:28] Speaker 1: break whatever spell, he'd put himself under, fine, I muttered,
[7:34] Speaker 1: But if you have a nightmare, I'm makin you sleep
[7:37] Speaker 1: in the laundry room. He smiled and shook his head.
[7:42] Speaker 1: I won't. I started flipping through the free channels. Most
[7:49] Speaker 1: of it was junk, but one station had a horror
[7:52] Speaker 1: line up running. There was a zombie movie half way through,
[7:56] Speaker 1: another one about some haunted motel. I let the previews
[8:00] Speaker 1: play while Mikey leaned forward, fascinated. Then the screen flickered
[8:07] Speaker 1: black and the emergency broadcast tone kicked in. I froze,
[8:13] Speaker 1: hands still on the remote as that flat, buzzing drone
[8:16] Speaker 1: filled the room. Mikey leaned back, confused. The words amber
[8:23] Speaker 1: alert appeared in block white letters, then switched to the
[8:27] Speaker 1: red warning screen. The message said there had been a
[8:31] Speaker 1: confirmed break in a few blocks over the authority's urged
[8:35] Speaker 1: residents in the surrounding neighborhood, to lock all the windows
[8:38] Speaker 1: and doors, and to report anything suspicious immediately. Mikey read
[8:44] Speaker 1: it slowly, lips moving, then turned to me. He didn't
[8:51] Speaker 1: seem worried, but he watched me get up. I could
[8:54] Speaker 1: already feel my chest tightening. It wasn't the alert itself,
[8:59] Speaker 1: it was the idea that if something went wrong, I'd
[9:02] Speaker 1: be the one standing between him and whatever came through
[9:05] Speaker 1: the door. I'm gonna check the house, and I said,
[9:10] Speaker 1: go brush your teeth, get to bed. But now the
[9:15] Speaker 1: movie's over. He groaned and stood up, dragging his feet
[9:21] Speaker 1: toward the stairs. I walked to the front door, pressed
[9:25] Speaker 1: in the lock, tested it twice. I pulled the windows closed,
[9:29] Speaker 1: tightened the latches, shut the blind. My hand was shaking,
[9:34] Speaker 1: and I hated that. After my paranoia induced energy wore off,
[9:40] Speaker 1: I shut off the lights in the living room and
[9:43] Speaker 1: headed upstairs. I passed Mike's room and saw that his
[9:47] Speaker 1: door was cracked open. He was already under his blanket.
[9:53] Speaker 1: He didn't say anything when I walked by, but I
[9:56] Speaker 1: knew he was still awake. I stepped into my room
[10:00] Speaker 1: and shut the door behind me. I dropped into bed
[10:03] Speaker 1: and stared at the ceiling, the same as Mikey was
[10:07] Speaker 1: probably doing. I kept my phone close. The charger cable
[10:12] Speaker 1: was lying on the ground unused. I hadn't plugged it
[10:15] Speaker 1: in earlier, and now I didn't feel like the right
[10:18] Speaker 1: time to go hunting for the outlet. I must have
[10:23] Speaker 1: been hovering on the edge of sleep when I heard it,
[10:28] Speaker 1: a high pitched scream, Mikey's voice. I sat up so
[10:35] Speaker 1: fast my shoulder cracked, My feet hit the ground, and
[10:39] Speaker 1: I was through the hallway before I knew i'd start up.
[10:42] Speaker 1: My heart kicked hard in my chest. I didn't have
[10:45] Speaker 1: time to think. He was screaming, and there was no
[10:49] Speaker 1: question in my mind what that meant. The alert the
[10:54] Speaker 1: burglar must have broken in and now is after Mikey.
[10:58] Speaker 1: I should have grabbed something abat the chair by the stairwell,
[11:02] Speaker 1: anything I didn't. I pushed this door open so hard
[11:07] Speaker 1: it bounce off the wall behind it. There was nothing.
[11:14] Speaker 1: It was only Mikey, sitting up in bed with his
[11:17] Speaker 1: arms around his knees, crying through his teeth. His eyes
[11:22] Speaker 1: were wide stuck on something that wasn't there anymore. He
[11:27] Speaker 1: saw me and flinched, then opened his mouth to speak,
[11:31] Speaker 1: but nothing came out. I walked over and sat on
[11:35] Speaker 1: the edge of the bed. My hands were shaking worse
[11:38] Speaker 1: than his. You're okay, I said. I kept my voice low,
[11:44] Speaker 1: my throat was dry. You're right, He didn't answer. His
[11:51] Speaker 1: breath hitched a few times before he could get it
[11:53] Speaker 1: under control. I reached over and pulled him in. He
[11:58] Speaker 1: was sweating through his shirt. Bad dream, I asked. He nodded.
[12:05] Speaker 1: His face stayed buried in my shoulder. I wanted to
[12:10] Speaker 1: be annoyed, but I wasn't. That scream had torn through
[12:14] Speaker 1: everything I thought I could handle. The fact that it
[12:17] Speaker 1: was a dream made it easier, but it didn't make
[12:20] Speaker 1: it go away. I was still wound up so tight
[12:24] Speaker 1: my neck hurt. You want water, I asked. No, he whispered,
[12:33] Speaker 1: you want me to sit with you a bit. He
[12:36] Speaker 1: nodded again. After a minute, he pulled away and wiped
[12:42] Speaker 1: his face with the sleeves of his pajama top. He
[12:46] Speaker 1: wouldn't look at me. Here was the monster again, he said.
[12:53] Speaker 1: I glanced around the room, taking it in. There were
[12:56] Speaker 1: clothes on the floor, a plastic cop with a juice
[12:59] Speaker 1: box straw still stuck in it, and one of his
[13:02] Speaker 1: drawings taped to the wall above his head. A thick
[13:06] Speaker 1: black line ran down the middle of the page, splitting
[13:09] Speaker 1: it in two. On one side was a boy with
[13:12] Speaker 1: a balloon, and the other side was a weird figure
[13:16] Speaker 1: made of scribbles. He saw me looking. Can you check,
[13:23] Speaker 1: he asked, his voice cracked at the end. You know
[13:28] Speaker 1: there's nothing here, I said, already standing. He probably packed
[13:33] Speaker 1: up and moved when he heard me coming. Mikey didn't laugh.
[13:40] Speaker 1: He watched me with his hands, bawled into his blanket.
[13:44] Speaker 1: I sighed and walked over to the closet. I slid
[13:48] Speaker 1: it open and waited. Nothing but a few shoes and
[13:52] Speaker 1: one of my old hoodies. He kept stealing when I
[13:55] Speaker 1: wasn't looking. I turned to him and gave a mock gasp,
[14:00] Speaker 1: empty guess. We caught him on a smoke break. Still
[14:05] Speaker 1: nothing all right, I said, let's go all in. Clausets
[14:12] Speaker 1: cleared now from under the bed. I dropped to one
[14:17] Speaker 1: knee and leaned in. I expected dust, a sock, a
[14:22] Speaker 1: piece of broken toy, maybe one of his drawings crumbled
[14:26] Speaker 1: up and shoved out of sight. But that's not what
[14:30] Speaker 1: I saw. At first. All I saw was darkness and
[14:36] Speaker 1: the clint of something smooth in the back corner. I
[14:39] Speaker 1: thought it might be a marble or one of those
[14:42] Speaker 1: glass eyeballs he picked out of a Halloween prize bin
[14:44] Speaker 1: last year. But then it blinked. It didn't blink like
[14:51] Speaker 1: a person. It flexed. A long, vertical slit opened and
[14:56] Speaker 1: closed slowly, and I realized it was staring at me.
[15:03] Speaker 1: Two massive yellow eyes sunk into a head that should
[15:07] Speaker 1: not a fit in the crawl space beneath a child's
[15:09] Speaker 1: bed frame. The pupils adjusted as I stared, thin and long,
[15:15] Speaker 1: narrowing against the light. The longer I looked, the more
[15:20] Speaker 1: of it I could make out. It was covered in thick,
[15:26] Speaker 1: uneven fur, damp around the edges, clinging to the floor,
[15:30] Speaker 1: as if it had soaked into the boards. Its body
[15:34] Speaker 1: stretched deep on the foot of the bed. Thick limbs
[15:37] Speaker 1: pressed against the underside, like they were forced there, like
[15:41] Speaker 1: it had wedged itself into a shape that didn't belong
[15:44] Speaker 1: to it. It stared at me. Its mouth was slightly open,
[15:50] Speaker 1: its tongue sat limp between rows of disjointed teeth. Thick
[15:54] Speaker 1: strings of spit hung from its staw. There was something
[15:59] Speaker 1: in that look, something not curious, not afraid, not hostile either.
[16:05] Speaker 1: If anything, it looked pleased. I couldn't breathe, my chest
[16:13] Speaker 1: locked up. I could feel my pulse in my ears,
[16:17] Speaker 1: but I couldn't will my body to move. Then its
[16:22] Speaker 1: jaws shifted, not wide, but enough to show more of
[16:27] Speaker 1: the teeth. It grinned at me. The spell snapped. I
[16:34] Speaker 1: threw myself back and scrambled to my feet. Mikey was
[16:39] Speaker 1: watching me with white eyes, waiting for me to say
[16:42] Speaker 1: he was crazy, or that it was clear, or that
[16:44] Speaker 1: we could both go back to sleep. I didn't say anything.
[16:51] Speaker 1: I grabbed him by the arm and pulled him so
[16:53] Speaker 1: hard he stumbled. I dragged him out of the room,
[16:56] Speaker 1: across the hallway toward the attic hatch near the lawnch clauset.
[17:01] Speaker 1: He was asking questions. I couldn't hear them. I pulled
[17:06] Speaker 1: the chain, dropped the ladder, and shoved him up ahead
[17:09] Speaker 1: of me. I scrambled into the attic behind him, grabbing
[17:13] Speaker 1: the string and yanking the ladder back up with both hands.
[17:18] Speaker 1: I retracted with a crack. I slammed the hatch shut
[17:22] Speaker 1: and sat back, listening for anything beneath us. Nothing. Mikey
[17:31] Speaker 1: was sitting in the corner near the insulation rolls, breathing
[17:34] Speaker 1: through his nose, trying not to cry. I sat beside
[17:38] Speaker 1: him and stared at the hatch. I pulled on my phone.
[17:42] Speaker 1: I cracked thing I brought from a guy at school
[17:45] Speaker 1: for forty bucks. The screen was scratched, but still worked.
[17:50] Speaker 1: I dialed nine one one and pressed it to my ear.
[17:53] Speaker 1: My hand wouldn't stop shaking. It rang once before the
[17:58] Speaker 1: operator answered. I didn't wait for her to go through
[18:01] Speaker 1: the usual questions. Some one broke in. I said, there's
[18:07] Speaker 1: some one in our house. I hesitated. That wasn't what
[18:12] Speaker 1: I meant, but I didn't have the words for what
[18:15] Speaker 1: I'd seen. I couldn't tell her there was something under
[18:18] Speaker 1: the bed, so I didn't explain. I repeated myself, voice cracking,
[18:25] Speaker 1: there's something in our house. We're in the attic. Please
[18:28] Speaker 1: send someone, please. She asked for my address. I gave
[18:34] Speaker 1: it to her twice. She told me to stay calm.
[18:39] Speaker 1: She said officers were unroute and asked if I could
[18:42] Speaker 1: describe the intruder. I didn't answer that. I told her
[18:48] Speaker 1: the doors were locked, that we were hiding. I asked
[18:51] Speaker 1: her how long they'd take. Then the screen went black.
[18:58] Speaker 1: I stared at it for a second, not understanding what
[19:01] Speaker 1: had happened. I pressed the button. Nothing. I flipped it over. Nothing.
[19:08] Speaker 1: It had died in my hand. Mikey looked at me.
[19:13] Speaker 1: He didn't ask if it was okay. He knew from
[19:16] Speaker 1: my face that it wasn't. And then from downstairs, something
[19:23] Speaker 1: broke through the kitchen window, followed by scrambling steps and
[19:28] Speaker 1: drawers opening and closing. Eventually it was accompanied by another sound,
[19:35] Speaker 1: a massive crash that sounded like it came from where
[19:39] Speaker 1: Mikey's room would have been. Another set of steps started,
[19:43] Speaker 1: but they were strange, like whatever was down there didn't
[19:47] Speaker 1: walk often. The first view was slow, then it turned
[19:51] Speaker 1: into what sounded like a gallop. Something big moved through
[19:56] Speaker 1: the house, gaining speed. The other said footprints, presumably in
[20:02] Speaker 1: the living room, stopped. A while later. I could hear
[20:07] Speaker 1: blooded screams. Cabinets slammed, a table, tipped, chairs screeched across
[20:13] Speaker 1: the floor, wood splintered. Something thick and weighty tore through
[20:19] Speaker 1: the hall. I heard an animalistic noise roll up through
[20:23] Speaker 1: the floorboards, something between a growl and a calf. Something
[20:28] Speaker 1: started crunching, and a massive gulp radiated through the house.
[20:35] Speaker 1: Mikey buried his face in my side. I couldn't move.
[20:40] Speaker 1: Then all sound ceased. Nothing followed, only the cold stillness
[20:47] Speaker 1: of insulation pressing against my back and Mikey's rapid, silent
[20:51] Speaker 1: breaths against my ribs stayed. I didn't know what was
[20:55] Speaker 1: going on down there, but I knew sure as hell.
[20:59] Speaker 1: I I didn't want to find out. I didn't ask
[21:03] Speaker 1: mi Key if you heard it, that would have been insulting.
[21:08] Speaker 1: He was shaking, hands clenched around my shirt. I didn't
[21:13] Speaker 1: speak either. I didn't want my voice to break the
[21:16] Speaker 1: silence in case the silence was what kept it from returning.
[21:23] Speaker 1: Time passed. When the first blue light hit the far
[21:28] Speaker 1: window in the attic, I audibly gasped. A car door slammed,
[21:33] Speaker 1: then another. Boots moved across the porch. A voice called
[21:37] Speaker 1: out from the front of the house, but I was
[21:40] Speaker 1: too afraid to make a sound. They found us both
[21:43] Speaker 1: in the attic. We were pale and shaking. My throat
[21:48] Speaker 1: was so dry I couldn't answer their first question. Mikey
[21:52] Speaker 1: hid behind me, still holding onto the hem of my shirt.
[21:57] Speaker 1: One of the officers stepped in gently. I scanning the hallway,
[22:01] Speaker 1: his free hand near his hip. They led us downstairs
[22:05] Speaker 1: once they confirmed we were alone. The house was a wreck.
[22:12] Speaker 1: The dinner table had been split in two, its senter
[22:15] Speaker 1: legs crossed inward. Two chairs were broken in places, one
[22:20] Speaker 1: lodged halfway through the dry wall. The cabinet doors hung
[22:24] Speaker 1: open and their contents scattered across the floor. A streak
[22:28] Speaker 1: of something dark had smeared across the linonium one wall.
[22:33] Speaker 1: The one beside the coat rack near the stairs had
[22:36] Speaker 1: been cracked open with sheer force. I could see where
[22:40] Speaker 1: the woods splintered outward. The broken kitchen window led in
[22:44] Speaker 1: a cust of wind, and on the floor below it
[22:48] Speaker 1: was a pistol. The officer picked it up with gloved hands.
[22:53] Speaker 1: He turned it to his partner and said something I
[22:56] Speaker 1: didn't hear. From what I overheard, they identified it as
[23:03] Speaker 1: having belonged to the man from the amber alert, the
[23:06] Speaker 1: burglar who'd been breaking into homes near by. One of
[23:10] Speaker 1: the officers patted my shoulder. He told me I'd done
[23:13] Speaker 1: a good job, said calling it in had probably saved
[23:17] Speaker 1: both our lives. His tone carried confidence. He looked past
[23:23] Speaker 1: me a few times while he spoke, scanning the room
[23:26] Speaker 1: as if something might still be standing in the shadows.
[23:31] Speaker 1: He said. The guy must have broken in, panicked and
[23:34] Speaker 1: fired off around before trying to escape, or maybe something
[23:38] Speaker 1: else scared him. They didn't know. No one had found
[23:43] Speaker 1: anything at all, and they never found that man. After this,
[23:49] Speaker 1: I nodded and kept my mouth shut. I didn't see
[23:53] Speaker 1: a reason to correct him. I wouldn't have known what
[23:56] Speaker 1: to say if I tried. Years later, I kept thinking
[24:03] Speaker 1: about what the cop said, that maybe something scared him off.
[24:08] Speaker 1: I never saw the thing under the bed again after
[24:11] Speaker 1: that night. I don't think Mikey did either. He stopped
[24:16] Speaker 1: talking about it. But I've thought about it more than
[24:19] Speaker 1: I cared to admit. That night, it could have followed
[24:25] Speaker 1: us up to the attic, but it didn't, and I've
[24:31] Speaker 1: come to believe it wasn't haunting Mike at all. It
[24:37] Speaker 1: was guarding him.
