[0:01] Speaker 1: I'm serious this time, Cody said, leaning across the cracked
[0:06] Speaker 1: picnic table. His breath smeled like sour candy, and his
[0:11] Speaker 1: eyes looked huge behind his bent up glasses. It's a
[0:15] Speaker 1: real ritual, real real I didn't just find it on
[0:19] Speaker 1: Google or YouTube this time. I had to go through
[0:22] Speaker 1: this whole creepy website you can't even find unless you
[0:25] Speaker 1: do this thing with your computer. It's called a hidden
[0:28] Speaker 1: browser or something. I snorted and picked at the peeling
[0:33] Speaker 1: paint on the table. Yeah, just like the real ritual
[0:37] Speaker 1: where you made me eat a crayon and told me
[0:39] Speaker 1: my future would come true if I pooped out the
[0:41] Speaker 1: whole thing in one piece. Cody shoved me with his elbow,
[0:47] Speaker 1: but it barely counted as a shove. He was skinny,
[0:51] Speaker 1: always had been, with elbows so pointy he could probably
[0:55] Speaker 1: stab someone if he wanted. That was a joke. It
[1:00] Speaker 1: is different. I did research this time, real research. Hows
[1:05] Speaker 1: of it? I leaned back and squinted at him, trying
[1:10] Speaker 1: to keep a straight face. Cody doing research usually meant
[1:16] Speaker 1: he found some kid on a forum who told him
[1:18] Speaker 1: how to summon a ghost with a spoon and a prayer.
[1:23] Speaker 1: Thing was he was my friend, always had been, ever
[1:28] Speaker 1: since kindergarten, when he wore a cape to school for
[1:31] Speaker 1: three weeks straight and told everyone he had wizard blood.
[1:36] Speaker 1: Cody had this thing about creepy stuff, monsters, spells, ghost stories,
[1:42] Speaker 1: you name it. He collected weird facts the same way
[1:46] Speaker 1: normal kids collect baseball cards. Every week he had a
[1:50] Speaker 1: new ritual, or a new monster, or a new story
[1:53] Speaker 1: about a haunted road he read about somewhere on a blog.
[1:58] Speaker 1: Since I had stuck with him through all of it,
[2:00] Speaker 1: most kids lumped me into the same weird bucket. We
[2:05] Speaker 1: were the spooky kids, the ones who made paper mache
[2:08] Speaker 1: monsters in art class instead of finger painting flowers. Teachers
[2:13] Speaker 1: thought we were harmless, but other kids mostly kept their distance.
[2:18] Speaker 1: I think they figured if they stood too close, they
[2:21] Speaker 1: might catch whatever weirdness we had. Cody could be annoying sometimes.
[2:29] Speaker 1: He always thought he knew more than every one else.
[2:33] Speaker 1: He had this thing where he would keep secrets on purpose,
[2:36] Speaker 1: just to drive you crazy enough to beg him for answers.
[2:40] Speaker 1: But he was my best friend. So when he looked
[2:46] Speaker 1: at me with that dopey, excited face and said, come on,
[2:50] Speaker 1: it'll be awesome, I swear, I sighed and gave him
[2:55] Speaker 1: a fist bump across the table. Fine, I said, but
[3:00] Speaker 1: if I end up eating another crayon, I'm never speaking
[3:03] Speaker 1: to you again. Cody grinned so hard I could see
[3:08] Speaker 1: the spot whereas to the chip, last summer deal, and
[3:13] Speaker 1: if it does work, this is the last one. Swear
[3:17] Speaker 1: in your Pokemon cards. He agreed, and that's when I
[3:22] Speaker 1: knew he was serious. We met up after school and
[3:30] Speaker 1: got on our way. Cody beat me off the starting
[3:33] Speaker 1: line by a mile, his sneakers slamming against the pedals,
[3:37] Speaker 1: his bike rattling across the potholes so bad I thought
[3:41] Speaker 1: his front wheel was going to pop off. I pushed harder,
[3:45] Speaker 1: standing on my pedals and leaning into the race, but
[3:48] Speaker 1: Cody had that manic energy you only get when you
[3:52] Speaker 1: think you're about to do something hystoric. We cut through
[3:56] Speaker 1: the neighborhood fast enough to make old ladies walking their
[3:59] Speaker 1: dogs yell at us. Lawns blurred past, and I could
[4:03] Speaker 1: smell fresh cut grass and someone grilling hot dog somewhere.
[4:07] Speaker 1: Cody whooped when we hit the downhill slope by the
[4:10] Speaker 1: abandoned video store, arms outstretched, coasting like he was flying.
[4:16] Speaker 1: His house came into view at the end of the block,
[4:19] Speaker 1: squat and square, a saggy basketball hoop clinging onto the
[4:23] Speaker 1: garage by a single bolt. The lights were off. They
[4:28] Speaker 1: were always off. His mom worked nights, sometimes entire weekends.
[4:35] Speaker 1: His dad was never in the picture. Cody never said why,
[4:40] Speaker 1: and I never asked whatever had happened. He left Cody
[4:44] Speaker 1: half wild and half grown up in a way no
[4:47] Speaker 1: one else our age really was. He pretty much raised
[4:51] Speaker 1: himself on cereal and horror movies. We dumped our bikes
[4:56] Speaker 1: in the dirt patch by his porch. The kickstands so
[4:59] Speaker 1: useful it was a miracle they stayed up at all.
[5:03] Speaker 1: Cody fumbled with his keys for a second before he
[5:06] Speaker 1: got the door open. Then he turned and grinned at me.
[5:11] Speaker 1: Prepare to be amazed, he said, puffing his chest out.
[5:17] Speaker 1: I followed him inside. The house smelled a little dusty,
[5:22] Speaker 1: a little sweet, probably from the mountain of snack wrappers
[5:26] Speaker 1: Cody never got around to cleaning up. We headed straight
[5:30] Speaker 1: for the basement door. Cody threw it open with a
[5:34] Speaker 1: dramatic sweep of his arm, motioning me to go first.
[5:39] Speaker 1: I took one step down and froze the whole basement
[5:48] Speaker 1: had been transformed. There were candles arranged in neat little
[5:52] Speaker 1: circles around a massive chalk pentagram drawn right into the
[5:57] Speaker 1: concrete floor. Bowls of salt sat at every point of
[6:01] Speaker 1: the star. We had junk, broken mirrors, little bones, Stacks
[6:07] Speaker 1: of torn book pages sat all over the place. The
[6:11] Speaker 1: air felt heavier, almost sticky, and it smelled like burnt
[6:15] Speaker 1: matches and something else. Cody bounded past me and let
[6:21] Speaker 1: down the last few steps two at a time. He
[6:24] Speaker 1: grabbed a crumpled bag of chips from the arm of
[6:26] Speaker 1: a ragged chair and tossed it my face armor up, soldier,
[6:32] Speaker 1: he said, ye cannot battle age and evil and an
[6:35] Speaker 1: empty stomach. The bag hit me square between the eyes
[6:40] Speaker 1: and dropped to the floor. I bent down to pick
[6:44] Speaker 1: it up, feeling my heart thump a little harder. This
[6:49] Speaker 1: was way beyond anything Cody had ever done before. Again,
[6:55] Speaker 1: usually his rituals meant chanting into a bathroom mirror with
[6:59] Speaker 1: the lights off, or making me stack a bunch of
[7:02] Speaker 1: river rocks in a circle and whispered to them until
[7:05] Speaker 1: we got bored. One time, when he really talked it up,
[7:09] Speaker 1: he confessed afterward that he had made the whole thing
[7:12] Speaker 1: up because he thought it would be funny to tell
[7:15] Speaker 1: people we thought a ghost by hitting it with plastic
[7:17] Speaker 1: baseball bats. But this looked real. I crinkled the bag
[7:26] Speaker 1: chip in my hands and gave him a look. He
[7:29] Speaker 1: went full psycho for this one. Huh. Cody just grinned wider,
[7:36] Speaker 1: bouncing on the balls of his feet, candles flickering behind him.
[7:41] Speaker 1: Only the best for my last ritual ever, he said,
[7:46] Speaker 1: swear it. Cody plopped down cross legged at the edge
[7:50] Speaker 1: of the pentagram and motioned for me to do the same.
[7:55] Speaker 1: I settled into the spot across from him, cradling the
[7:58] Speaker 1: bag of chips he had thrown at me earlier. Crumbs
[8:01] Speaker 1: stucked my fingers already, and I knew he would yell
[8:05] Speaker 1: at me if I touched anything important, so I wiped
[8:09] Speaker 1: my hands and my jeans first. Okay, Cody said, pulling
[8:15] Speaker 1: a rumpled piece of notebook paper from his hoody pocket.
[8:18] Speaker 1: The lines were crooked and written in his messy, tilted handwriting.
[8:23] Speaker 1: He smoothed it out on the floor, squinting at it
[8:26] Speaker 1: in the candlelight. You gotta read these lines together. You
[8:31] Speaker 1: gotta mean it too, or it won't work. I stuffed
[8:36] Speaker 1: a handful of chips into my mouth and gave him
[8:38] Speaker 1: a thumbs up. He cleared his throat, and together we
[8:43] Speaker 1: started mumbling through the words. It sounded like total nonsense.
[8:52] Speaker 1: Some of it was in Latin, or at least what
[8:54] Speaker 1: Cody thought Latin sounded like. Other parts were weird, gibberish phrases,
[9:00] Speaker 1: things about opening doors and trading names. I mumbled along,
[9:05] Speaker 1: half hearted, crumbs falling into my lap, trying not to
[9:09] Speaker 1: crack up when Cody got super intense and threw his
[9:12] Speaker 1: whole chest into the weirder parts. Every now and then
[9:16] Speaker 1: he would stop and scurry around the circle, fixing a
[9:20] Speaker 1: candle that burned too low, or pushing the salt line
[9:23] Speaker 1: back into shape with the side of his shoe. His
[9:26] Speaker 1: forehead was shiny with sweat, and his face had that
[9:29] Speaker 1: scrunched up serious luck he got whenever he played board
[9:33] Speaker 1: games or made spaghetti by himself. I was half way
[9:38] Speaker 1: through another handful of chips when it happened. The pentagram
[9:43] Speaker 1: on the floor pulsed. At first, I thought it was
[9:48] Speaker 1: my eyes playing tricks on me. Maybe the candles were
[9:51] Speaker 1: flickering weird because of the traft from the basement door.
[9:56] Speaker 1: But then it pulsed again. A faint red cloak crawled
[10:00] Speaker 1: along the lines Cody had drawn. I blinked and leaned forward,
[10:05] Speaker 1: wiping my hands again, trying to make sure I was
[10:08] Speaker 1: not just seeing things. Cody sat back on his heels,
[10:13] Speaker 1: mouth hanging open, eyes huge. I told you, he whispered,
[10:19] Speaker 1: bouncing a little where he sat. I told you. The
[10:26] Speaker 1: glow deepened, steady and low, and the candles began to tilt,
[10:31] Speaker 1: not flicker, tilt. Every tiny flame bent inward toward the
[10:38] Speaker 1: center of the pentagram, like little soldiers getting pulled by
[10:42] Speaker 1: invisible strings. The air got thicker. It pressed against my skin,
[10:48] Speaker 1: against my ears, almost buzzing. I could smell something new,
[10:53] Speaker 1: now sharp and metallic, under the burnt match smell. Cody
[10:58] Speaker 1: clapped his hands once, beaming, it's happening. Finally, did you
[11:05] Speaker 1: use glowing the dark chalk or something? I quizzed. He
[11:10] Speaker 1: jumped up, ignoring my question and started pacing outside the circle,
[11:15] Speaker 1: waving the crumpled notebook paper around. Okay, okay, okay, so
[11:21] Speaker 1: there's some rules, he said, excitement pouring out of him.
[11:25] Speaker 1: But trust me, it's worth it. I mean, you have
[11:28] Speaker 1: to follow the rules. Duah, But there's a reward at
[11:31] Speaker 1: the end, and it's supposed to be awesome, like life
[11:34] Speaker 1: changing awesome. He darted back to the edge of the circle,
[11:39] Speaker 1: crouching low. His voice dropped to a whisper. Even though
[11:43] Speaker 1: we're alone and there's a fail safe, I can end
[11:48] Speaker 1: it whenever, so don't freak out, all right, I'm not
[11:51] Speaker 1: going to tell you what it is yet, though I
[11:53] Speaker 1: know you you're chicken out the second you feel breezing
[11:56] Speaker 1: your neck or something. I opened my mouth to argue,
[12:03] Speaker 1: but the words froze in my throat. Something was moving
[12:08] Speaker 1: behind Cody. I stared, heart hammering so loud I could
[12:14] Speaker 1: hear it in my ears. A shape, black, rising slow
[12:21] Speaker 1: out of the glowing center of the pentagram, arms unfurling
[12:25] Speaker 1: like smoke, but heavier. It towered over Cody, without making
[12:30] Speaker 1: a sound, just this huge, awful silhouette, when nothing had
[12:35] Speaker 1: been a second ago. I tried to yell, tried to
[12:40] Speaker 1: say his name. My tongue fumbled around in my mouth,
[12:43] Speaker 1: pushing out broken pieces of words that did not make sense.
[12:48] Speaker 1: Cody frowned at me, confused, his eyebrows scrunched together. Dude,
[12:55] Speaker 1: what do you do? He never finished the sentence. The
[13:01] Speaker 1: thing behind him moved fast. There was a sound, sharp
[13:06] Speaker 1: and wet and cold. His head snapped sideways and tumbled
[13:10] Speaker 1: off his shoulders before his body even knew what happened.
[13:15] Speaker 1: His body wabbled for a second, knees knocking together, and
[13:20] Speaker 1: then it collapsed in a heap beside the pentagram. Blood
[13:25] Speaker 1: sprayed across the floor, across the chalk line, across the
[13:29] Speaker 1: toes of my shoes. I hit the basement stairs so
[13:35] Speaker 1: hard I barely touched the steps. My shoes slipped against
[13:39] Speaker 1: the wood, and I slammed my shoulder into the wall.
[13:42] Speaker 1: It scraped along the old, chipped paint, but I barely noticed.
[13:47] Speaker 1: I kept moving, grabbing for the hand rail and yanking
[13:51] Speaker 1: myself up faster. The second the basement door came in
[13:55] Speaker 1: to reach and threw it opened so hard it banged
[13:58] Speaker 1: against the wall behind it. I tore through Cody's living room,
[14:02] Speaker 1: knocking over a lamp with a crash that exploded behind me.
[14:07] Speaker 1: My chest burned already, but I could not stop. I
[14:12] Speaker 1: skidded out the front door and sprinted for my bike,
[14:15] Speaker 1: yanking it upright so hard the kickstand snapped off and
[14:19] Speaker 1: skittered across the sidewalk. I threw myself onto the seat,
[14:23] Speaker 1: peddling before I had both feet planted, knees wobbling, tires
[14:28] Speaker 1: spitting gravel. As I took off down the street, my
[14:32] Speaker 1: lungs heaved against my ribs. My legs screamed. My teeth
[14:36] Speaker 1: were clenched so hard my jaw ached. It's fake, it's fake.
[14:43] Speaker 1: He's pranking me. The words pounded against the inside of
[14:48] Speaker 1: my skull with every spin of the pedals. Cody had
[14:52] Speaker 1: set it up. He probably hired his older brother or
[14:55] Speaker 1: some one from the high school to wear a costume
[14:58] Speaker 1: to pull some sick horror movie tree s on me.
[15:01] Speaker 1: He'll be standing in his driveway to morrow morning with
[15:04] Speaker 1: a video on his hand, laughing so hard he could
[15:06] Speaker 1: barely breathe. He would show everyone at school. The street
[15:13] Speaker 1: lights buzzed overhead, casting puddles of orange across the sidewalk.
[15:17] Speaker 1: As I tore through them, I blew past Missus Redfield's
[15:21] Speaker 1: prize rose bush and clipped the edge of mister Tanner's
[15:24] Speaker 1: garbage cans, sending them rolling out into the road behind me.
[15:29] Speaker 1: I finally skidded into my driveway, tires squealing against the
[15:34] Speaker 1: crack cement My legs gave out half way off the bike,
[15:38] Speaker 1: and I stumbled to the front door, fingers fumbling with
[15:41] Speaker 1: the handle. Before I managed to shove it open. The
[15:47] Speaker 1: sound of my parents arguing hit me before I even
[15:50] Speaker 1: stepped inside. It was the same fight. They always had
[15:55] Speaker 1: money schedules, who forgot to pay the water bill. This
[15:59] Speaker 1: time their voices tangled together into one long, messy noise
[16:04] Speaker 1: that filled the house and rattled the windows. I bolted
[16:09] Speaker 1: up the stairs two at a time. My hands shook
[16:12] Speaker 1: so bad I could barely grab the railing, but I
[16:17] Speaker 1: made it to my room and slammed the door behind me.
[16:22] Speaker 1: I crawled into bed, still wearing my shoes. I yanked
[16:26] Speaker 1: the blanket over my head and curled up as small
[16:29] Speaker 1: as I could get, pulling my knees to my chest.
[16:32] Speaker 1: The smell of sweat and dirt clung to my clothes.
[16:35] Speaker 1: My heart thudded against my ribs so hard it hurt.
[16:41] Speaker 1: He pranked me, That was all it was. He scared
[16:45] Speaker 1: me so bad I thought it was real. That stupid,
[16:49] Speaker 1: stupid glowing the dark pentagram, that fague monster suit, that
[16:54] Speaker 1: blood was probably just ketch up or something. He bore
[16:57] Speaker 1: to the Halloween store he was going to laugh about
[17:01] Speaker 1: this forever. He was going to tell everyone. I was
[17:05] Speaker 1: going to be the joke of the whole school. I
[17:09] Speaker 1: squeezed my eyes shut and tried to slow my breathing.
[17:14] Speaker 1: Tomorrow he would text me. Tomorrow, he would say gotcha
[17:19] Speaker 1: and send me the video, and I would hate him
[17:22] Speaker 1: for a week, and then we would be fine again.
[17:25] Speaker 1: Tomorrow this would all be over. My parents kept arguing
[17:36] Speaker 1: over groceries, just another part of the night. I could
[17:39] Speaker 1: ignore if I squeeze my eyes shut hard enough. I
[17:44] Speaker 1: wanted to wait for them to quit arguing and then
[17:47] Speaker 1: ask about Cody. Maybe they go check, just in case.
[17:53] Speaker 1: Then my dad's voice changed. It cracked, pitched higher. I'd
[18:00] Speaker 1: never heard him make before. Something slammed downstairs hard. Something
[18:07] Speaker 1: else toppled over right after it. Glass shattered, thick and ugly.
[18:13] Speaker 1: My body went stiff under the blanket. I gripped the
[18:16] Speaker 1: fabric tight enough that my knuckles popped. Another slam louder,
[18:21] Speaker 1: this time, something heavy hitting the wall. Then nothing. Silence
[18:30] Speaker 1: pressed against my ears until I could hear my own breathing,
[18:34] Speaker 1: rough and shallow under the covers. I stayed frozen for
[18:38] Speaker 1: a bit. My parents never fought. I didn't really know
[18:45] Speaker 1: what to do, so I sat waiting for my mom's
[18:50] Speaker 1: voice to come cutting through the quiet, waiting for to
[18:53] Speaker 1: yell at my dad again, for the fight to pick
[18:56] Speaker 1: up where it left off. Nothing came. I pulled the
[19:03] Speaker 1: blanket off my face, Moving slow, I slid off the bed,
[19:08] Speaker 1: feet hitting the floorboards so soft they barely made a sound.
[19:13] Speaker 1: I crept toward the door and pressed my ear against it.
[19:17] Speaker 1: Still nothing. My fingers trembled against the doorknob. The hallway
[19:25] Speaker 1: outside stretched, shadows pooling at the edges, with the light
[19:29] Speaker 1: from my room did not reach. I took one step out,
[19:34] Speaker 1: then another. I leaned over the banister and looked down
[19:39] Speaker 1: into the living room. For a second, my brain could
[19:45] Speaker 1: not make sense of what I saw. The couch was overturned,
[19:50] Speaker 1: cushions split open, stuffing spilling across the floor. The coffee
[19:56] Speaker 1: table had been smashed into splinters, pieces of woods sticking
[20:00] Speaker 1: up in every direction. Blood soaked into the carpet, a deep,
[20:06] Speaker 1: dark stain that spread all the way to the walls.
[20:10] Speaker 1: My parents were in the middle of it, twisted and broken,
[20:15] Speaker 1: their faces stared up at the ceiling with wide, glassy eyes,
[20:19] Speaker 1: mouths frozen open like they had been mid scream. Blood
[20:24] Speaker 1: pulled under their bodies, seeping into their clothes, their skin
[20:28] Speaker 1: already pale. I stumbled back a step, my hand clamping
[20:34] Speaker 1: over my mouth before a scream could tear loose. In
[20:40] Speaker 1: the far corner of the room, Crouched low near the fireplace,
[20:45] Speaker 1: something moved. It was hunched over, folded in on itself,
[20:51] Speaker 1: head cocked at an angle that made my stomach turn.
[20:55] Speaker 1: Its skin was stretched, almost black against the shadows. Then
[21:01] Speaker 1: it lifted its head, its eyes locked on to mine.
[21:07] Speaker 1: I knew without a doubt it was the same thing
[21:11] Speaker 1: from the basement, the thing that had taken Cody's head
[21:15] Speaker 1: clean off his shoulders without a sound. It had followed
[21:19] Speaker 1: me home. Cody had promised he could end it whenever
[21:23] Speaker 1: he wanted. He had said there was a fail safe
[21:27] Speaker 1: away to stop it. But Cody was dead, and I
[21:32] Speaker 1: had no idea how to end it. I turned started
[21:38] Speaker 1: running again, slipping once on the wood and smashing my
[21:41] Speaker 1: shins so hard I almost fell. I caught myself on
[21:45] Speaker 1: the railing and stumbled forward, crashing through the hallway, barreling
[21:50] Speaker 1: down the stairs so fast my shoulders slammed against the wall.
[21:53] Speaker 1: At the bottom. The creature had moved. I could hear
[21:58] Speaker 1: it behind me now, something scraping across the broken floor.
[22:04] Speaker 1: I hit the front door full speed, shoulder first, and
[22:07] Speaker 1: it popped open so hard it bounced off the outside wall.
[22:12] Speaker 1: Cold air slapped against my face. Pain shot up through
[22:16] Speaker 1: my legs, but I kept going. Tears blurred against my
[22:22] Speaker 1: vision until the trees at the edge of our backyard
[22:25] Speaker 1: became one big smear of black. I headed straight for them,
[22:30] Speaker 1: gasping so hard my chest felt like it would tear open.
[22:35] Speaker 1: The old shack sat half hidden in the woods. It
[22:39] Speaker 1: had been there since before I was born, left over
[22:42] Speaker 1: from whoever owned the land, before our house was built.
[22:46] Speaker 1: It smelled like wet wood and mold and raccoons. Cody
[22:51] Speaker 1: and I used to play there when we were younger,
[22:53] Speaker 1: before we got too old for secret forts. I dove inside,
[22:58] Speaker 1: tripping over the threshold, landing hard on my hands and knees.
[23:04] Speaker 1: I scrambled o'er the darkest corner, curling up behind a
[23:07] Speaker 1: pile of rotten beams and torn up insulation. The air
[23:12] Speaker 1: in the shack was colder than outside. It scratched at
[23:16] Speaker 1: my throat with every breath. Dust stuck to the sweat
[23:20] Speaker 1: of my face. I pressed my forehead against my knees,
[23:24] Speaker 1: trying to fold myself into a ball so small nothing
