[0:02] Speaker 1: I was hired to assess the site's viability for future development,
[0:06] Speaker 1: your run of the mill routine topographical and environmental survey.
[0:11] Speaker 1: The land parcel in question was flagged decades ago as
[0:15] Speaker 1: a former settlement, some mining camp or agricultural commune that
[0:19] Speaker 1: folded before the First World War. There were no confirmed
[0:23] Speaker 1: structures left standing, just a few ghosted shapes on topographic
[0:28] Speaker 1: overlays and a vague mention in a handwritten railroad manifest.
[0:33] Speaker 1: The assumption was that nature had reclaimed it. The client
[0:38] Speaker 1: was a state expansion bureau that needed confirmation before approving
[0:42] Speaker 1: the site for rezoning. Three days on foot, two days
[0:46] Speaker 1: to log data out, easy money. I reached the ridge
[0:53] Speaker 1: near sunset. From that vantage, I expected overgrowth, ruin, maybe
[0:59] Speaker 1: a few stack stones swallowed by decades of erosion. Instead,
[1:05] Speaker 1: I found a town sat nestled at the base of
[1:08] Speaker 1: the valley like it had never been lost. Dozens of rooftops,
[1:13] Speaker 1: chimneys trailing thin plumes of smoke, worn wooden porches, two
[1:18] Speaker 1: story homes with split beam shutters and latiased windows. Not
[1:23] Speaker 1: a single modern fixture in sight. No telephone poles, no asphalt,
[1:28] Speaker 1: no signage beyond a small warped placard nailed to a
[1:32] Speaker 1: leaning post at the valley mouth burned into the wood
[1:37] Speaker 1: marrows end and beneath it carved faintly, almost like a
[1:43] Speaker 1: whisper for those returning. I started down the slope with
[1:50] Speaker 1: careful steps, crunching through brush, expecting someone, anyone, to react
[1:55] Speaker 1: to my approach. It was active, yet somehow still. Clothes
[2:02] Speaker 1: fluttered gently on drying lines. Her figure walked through the
[2:05] Speaker 1: garden rows behind one home, dragging a hoe. In even intervals,
[2:10] Speaker 1: smoke called upward from chimneys. I heard a creak as
[2:14] Speaker 1: a door swung open somewhere deeper in, but no engines,
[2:19] Speaker 1: no dogs barking or kids yelling. A woman passed me
[2:24] Speaker 1: on the main road, carrying a basket of roots bundled
[2:27] Speaker 1: in cloth. She wore a bonnet, a thick skirt, and
[2:31] Speaker 1: a weathered shawl. Her shoes were unlaced and smeared with
[2:35] Speaker 1: something dark. She moved around me like I'd always been there,
[2:39] Speaker 1: refusing to acknowledge me, like old furniture. Some part of me,
[2:45] Speaker 1: the part that spent too many nights alone in nowhere towns,
[2:49] Speaker 1: just wanted answers. This place wasn't abandoned. Which meant someone
[2:55] Speaker 1: was maintaining it off grid. I figured i'd knock on
[2:59] Speaker 1: a few dogs in the morning. Maybe someone would have
[3:02] Speaker 1: a generator tucked behind the chapel or offer up a
[3:05] Speaker 1: real explanation. A man greeted me. He was standing on
[3:11] Speaker 1: the porch with his hands folded in front of him,
[3:14] Speaker 1: face lean but gentle, expression unreadable. You will want a
[3:21] Speaker 1: room for the night, he said. I nodded. He handed
[3:26] Speaker 1: me hebrass key without requiring payment. You will want the
[3:31] Speaker 1: room with a basin, he said, as I stepped past
[3:35] Speaker 1: him and onto the porch. The inn was larger than
[3:41] Speaker 1: it looked from the road, two full floors with a
[3:45] Speaker 1: long central corridor that swallowed sound. The floorboards were clean,
[3:50] Speaker 1: but worn thin in the center, ground down from decades
[3:53] Speaker 1: of use. There were no rugs or decorations. The walls
[3:58] Speaker 1: were lined with frames. At first I thought there were mirrors,
[4:03] Speaker 1: but they were too dark for that. Instead there were
[4:07] Speaker 1: panes of glass clouded with soot edges, chipped surfaces dulled
[4:12] Speaker 1: by age, empty frames, no names or plaques. Whatever had
[4:18] Speaker 1: once been hung there had been removed, yet the nails
[4:21] Speaker 1: remained in place. The man didn't comment as I looked
[4:26] Speaker 1: He simply turned and walked, lantern in hand, expecting me
[4:30] Speaker 1: to follow, to the end of the hall. Inside my
[4:34] Speaker 1: room was bare. There was a narrow bed with tightly
[4:37] Speaker 1: tugged sheets, a small writing desk bolted to the floor,
[4:42] Speaker 1: a single oil lantern hanging from a hook at the
[4:44] Speaker 1: ceiling and at the foot of the bed, centered precisely
[4:49] Speaker 1: between the posts, a wide stone basin. The water inside
[4:55] Speaker 1: was dark, thickened like rain water. Left standing too long,
[5:00] Speaker 1: it caught the lantern light poory, swallowing most of it.
[5:04] Speaker 1: I assumed it was for washing old plumbing. I didn't
[5:09] Speaker 1: touch it. I set my pack down and finally did
[5:14] Speaker 1: what I should have done earlier. Tried to log my arrival,
[5:19] Speaker 1: but there was no signal. I tried punching in date
[5:23] Speaker 1: of regardless, coordinates, elevation, estimate, structural count. The screen lagged,
[5:30] Speaker 1: then froze. I wiped it clean, tried again, same result.
[5:38] Speaker 1: I put it away, hoping to try when signal returned. Outside,
[5:44] Speaker 1: the footsteps had stopped, no wind through the trees. The
[5:49] Speaker 1: quiet felt held in place, like breath waiting to be released.
[5:55] Speaker 1: Some time later, I don't know how long, I heard
[5:59] Speaker 1: a sound from the foot of the bed, a slow,
[6:03] Speaker 1: wet slosh. It wasn't loud or sudden, just the sound
[6:08] Speaker 1: of something settling into a new shape. I sat up.
[6:14] Speaker 1: The basin was still. The surface of the water hadn't changed.
[6:19] Speaker 1: I leaned closer, lantern in hand. The water reflected the
[6:23] Speaker 1: ceiling beams clearly enough, but the reflection showed more water
[6:28] Speaker 1: than there was filled higher nearer the rim, I tilted
[6:32] Speaker 1: my head. The level didn't change. I stepped back. Rest
[6:41] Speaker 1: didn't come easily. I wasn't necessarily overwhelmed. There was nothing
[6:46] Speaker 1: overtly strange that would put me on edge. However, all
[6:50] Speaker 1: the little things set off a survival instinct in the
[6:53] Speaker 1: back of my head, but eventually I managed to get
[6:58] Speaker 1: some sleep. At first light, I made a direct path
[7:03] Speaker 1: toward the ridge, focused on getting out. I used the
[7:07] Speaker 1: same trail I'd taken into the valley, mapped by memory
[7:10] Speaker 1: and footpath, but in the daylight things looked different. The
[7:16] Speaker 1: road curved past the inn and split near a grove
[7:19] Speaker 1: of low gnarll trees. I remembered that clearly for this time.
[7:25] Speaker 1: The trail forked in a new direction, a fresh cut path,
[7:29] Speaker 1: smooth and trodden. Still, I climbed my gut didn't settle.
[7:37] Speaker 1: After twenty minutes of steady ascent, I reached the edge
[7:40] Speaker 1: of a clearing i'd never seen, and beyond it the
[7:45] Speaker 1: same signage i'd passed the day before Marrow's end. For
[7:51] Speaker 1: those returning, the carving was identical, same angle, same split
[7:58] Speaker 1: in the lower post. My boots made the same noise
[8:01] Speaker 1: on the same gravel i'd looped, except I hadn't turned once. Now,
[8:10] Speaker 1: entering with the sun up, I could see the town
[8:13] Speaker 1: had changed in my absence. The townspeople moved in synchronized cycles.
[8:19] Speaker 1: I passed the root patch again and saw the same
[8:22] Speaker 1: woman from yesterday cutting the same crop in the same arc.
[8:26] Speaker 1: A knife never paused. I saw a man hanging herbs
[8:30] Speaker 1: from twine near a crooked post, and when I passed
[8:33] Speaker 1: by him half an hour later, he was still hanging them,
[8:38] Speaker 1: same motion, same plants, only the twine had lengthened. No
[8:43] Speaker 1: one acknowledged me, not even in the passive, dismissive way
[8:47] Speaker 1: they had before. They moved as if they were enacting
[8:51] Speaker 1: a play. I tried knocking on doors, but most were locked.
[8:56] Speaker 1: Inside the view I could open, there was nothing but
[8:59] Speaker 1: unused furniture arranged identically in each house. Then I saw
[9:06] Speaker 1: the children, three of them, stood in the narrow alley
[9:10] Speaker 1: behind the butcher's shop, watching a beetle drag itself across
[9:13] Speaker 1: the dirt coldly. They watched me for a few seconds
[9:18] Speaker 1: in the corner of their eyes. They just didn't look
[9:22] Speaker 1: like I wasn't an object worth registering. Then I saw
[9:26] Speaker 1: the youngest looking one blink once slowly, and the beetles
[9:33] Speaker 1: stopped moving. In an overgrown field, a woman bent over
[9:39] Speaker 1: a patch of gray root like vegetables, hacking at them
[9:42] Speaker 1: with a curved blade. Nearby, a man dragged a whetstone
[9:47] Speaker 1: along the edge of a billhook, his stroke steady and mechanical.
[9:51] Speaker 1: A pair of goats are being led across the road
[9:53] Speaker 1: by a child with a switch in one hand, not
[9:56] Speaker 1: using it, just holding it upright like a flag. At
[10:00] Speaker 1: the town square, I confronted an older man carrying an
[10:04] Speaker 1: unlit lantern. Where's the road out, I asked. He tilted
[10:10] Speaker 1: his head. We prepare, he said, prepare for what? He
[10:20] Speaker 1: looked at me with unfocused, glazed eyes. Some, he said slowly,
[10:27] Speaker 1: for longer than others. He sounded delirious. Nothing he was
[10:34] Speaker 1: saying made sense. Then he walked past me and continued
[10:39] Speaker 1: walking even after the road ended. That was when I
[10:44] Speaker 1: saw the well. It sat in a square like an altar.
[10:49] Speaker 1: A long rope hung slack down the shaft, still coiled
[10:53] Speaker 1: with use. Around the lip of the stone were carved words,
[10:57] Speaker 1: worn but legible. All offerings must bear intent. The o
[11:05] Speaker 1: in offerings was cracked through, as if something had been
[11:07] Speaker 1: wedged into it. I leaned in to look closer. Inside
[11:13] Speaker 1: the well, not far. I saw fabric, a sleeve, a shoulder,
[11:21] Speaker 1: a body half immersed and bent wrong, like it had
[11:24] Speaker 1: been folded inward and offered to the shaft. Their skin
[11:29] Speaker 1: was pale and waxy, and their limbs pulled long and jointless,
[11:33] Speaker 1: resembling the townspeople. I backed away and stumbled toward the church.
[11:40] Speaker 1: It was open. Inside was quiet, dustless, pews and unlit
[11:46] Speaker 1: lanterns lined the space, and the air smelled like stone
[11:49] Speaker 1: and heat. I moved toward the altar. The pulpit was
[11:54] Speaker 1: set to the side. The wall behind it was plain,
[11:59] Speaker 1: but on the floor I found a thin length of
[12:02] Speaker 1: twine tied in a circle around it. The dust that
[12:07] Speaker 1: had been moved with purpose, lines jutted out in concentric angles.
[12:14] Speaker 1: I couldn't figure it out. I stared trying to apply meaning,
[12:19] Speaker 1: but it just seemed too random. But when I tried
[12:23] Speaker 1: to accept it was nothing, it pulled my mind in
[12:26] Speaker 1: two directions at once, And then my mind tried to
[12:29] Speaker 1: pull away, dismiss it as I saw it just as shape.
[12:35] Speaker 1: Yet I couldn't let it go until I forced my
[12:38] Speaker 1: legs to take me back to the inn. I didn't
[12:43] Speaker 1: sleep after what I saw. With no method to escape,
[12:47] Speaker 1: I paced the room until the lantern burned out, then
[12:51] Speaker 1: sat in the dark with the curtains drawn, listening to
[12:54] Speaker 1: the faint movement of feet across floorboards that weren't mine,
[12:58] Speaker 1: A murmur behind the wall, a quiet shift of the
[13:01] Speaker 1: water in the basin, like breath trying to time itself
[13:05] Speaker 1: with mine. At first light, I tried again to leave,
[13:11] Speaker 1: Rather than head toward the trail I'd failed to follow
[13:14] Speaker 1: the day before, I skirted the outer buildings, weaving behind
[13:18] Speaker 1: the backs of houses and storage sheds, staying just far
[13:22] Speaker 1: enough from the town center that I wouldn't be seen
[13:25] Speaker 1: or worse noticed. It was colder back there. The houses
[13:32] Speaker 1: thinned into open ground behind the church, where the grass
[13:36] Speaker 1: grew in tight circles, pale as bone. It wasn't the
[13:40] Speaker 1: path had come in on, but it pointed toward the
[13:43] Speaker 1: tree line, and that was enough. Near the slope's edge,
[13:50] Speaker 1: I found a rusted iron gate wedge between two stone posts.
[13:54] Speaker 1: The metal had slumped with age, its joints warped from
[13:58] Speaker 1: old pressure. One side leaned open, just enough space to
[14:03] Speaker 1: squeeze through. I stepped forward, pushing the gate wider with
[14:07] Speaker 1: my palm. The metal gave and tore my hand open
[14:13] Speaker 1: a long, appealing weld. The pain was sharp, instant. I
[14:18] Speaker 1: swore and stumbled back, cradling my hand as blood ran
[14:22] Speaker 1: freely across my skin, too freely. The cot was shallow,
[14:28] Speaker 1: but the floe was steady, hot, unnervingly fast. I pressed
[14:34] Speaker 1: my hand to my jacket to slow it, but the
[14:37] Speaker 1: blood had already begun to trail across the soil, moving strangely.
[14:42] Speaker 1: Branching veins of red crept through the dirt, crawling outward
[14:47] Speaker 1: in thin, impossibly symmetrical lines. The earth darkened where it passed,
[14:53] Speaker 1: capillary thin rivulets spidering out in every direction. My mind
[14:59] Speaker 1: went back toward I I saw in the church. I
[15:02] Speaker 1: backed away, chest tight, heart thudding hard enough I could
[15:07] Speaker 1: feel it in my ears. The blood didn't stop. It
[15:12] Speaker 1: was like it was forming a pattern. I don't remember
[15:17] Speaker 1: getting back to the inn, having moved with urgency to
[15:20] Speaker 1: tend to my wound in solitude. I just remember the
[15:24] Speaker 1: act of slamming the door behind me, breathing through clenched teeth,
[15:28] Speaker 1: and crouching at the foot of the bed to unwrap
[15:31] Speaker 1: my hand and bandage it tight with a clean shirt sleeve.
[15:36] Speaker 1: By the time night came, I was shaking. It felt
[15:41] Speaker 1: as if my balance was slightly off center. My hand
[15:44] Speaker 1: had stopped throbbing, but I didn't shake the dressing. I
[15:48] Speaker 1: didn't want to see how clean it was. The lantern
[15:52] Speaker 1: was off. Some time after midnight. I woke to the
[15:58] Speaker 1: sound of someone breathing beneath the bear. Each breath long,
[16:02] Speaker 1: fluid wet, each exhil stretching longer than the last. I froze.
[16:11] Speaker 1: The basin at the foot of the bed was half
[16:13] Speaker 1: filled again. I hadn't touched it since arriving. The surface
[16:18] Speaker 1: of the water was in motion, as if it was climbing.
[16:23] Speaker 1: Thin tingrials of liquid crawled upward against the stone, sliding
[16:27] Speaker 1: up the rim and curling shapes, trying to crest over.
[16:32] Speaker 1: I stood too fast. The floor creaked under my heel.
[16:36] Speaker 1: The breathing stopped, but I continued running. I reached the door.
[16:43] Speaker 1: The handle was warm, like it was alive. It resisted
[16:47] Speaker 1: slightly when I turned it, like skin recoiling from touch.
[16:52] Speaker 1: Then gently it pulsed in a steady throb. I took
[16:58] Speaker 1: my hand back and stepped away. The room smelled of
[17:02] Speaker 1: copper and something sweet and raw, like over ripe fruit
[17:06] Speaker 1: or sick animal's den. I sat down on the bed
[17:10] Speaker 1: and waited for the sun, too scared to look away,
[17:14] Speaker 1: and equally as terrified to go out at night, frozen
[17:18] Speaker 1: in place by an impossible decision. By morning, my palm
[17:25] Speaker 1: had healed without trace, smooth and uniform, like it had
[17:29] Speaker 1: never been opened at all. But on the inside of
[17:33] Speaker 1: my forearm, faint but visible under the skin, a new
[17:38] Speaker 1: mark had surfaced, A sigil, pale and curling like something
[17:45] Speaker 1: once soft and wet, had wrapped around the bone and
[17:49] Speaker 1: decided to stay. A second attempt to leave had failed
[17:55] Speaker 1: before it started. By midday, I tried every exit I
[17:59] Speaker 1: could map, the sloping trail behind the chapel, the ridge
[18:03] Speaker 1: line behind the butcher's lot, the old boundary fence beside
[18:06] Speaker 1: the orchard. Each time, I followed the route as far
[18:10] Speaker 1: as I dared. Each time I ended back in the
[18:14] Speaker 1: same place, the signpost leaning just slightly to the left,
[18:20] Speaker 1: the words Mirror's end burned into it. The town wasn't looping.
[18:26] Speaker 1: I checked every landmark, every tree. Things changed subtly between attempts.
[18:33] Speaker 1: A path would straighten, a stone would be gone, but
[18:37] Speaker 1: the result was the same. There was no path out.
[18:44] Speaker 1: What's worse is that each attempt was never stopped. The
[18:48] Speaker 1: townsfolk just went about their business. Either two programmed into
[18:52] Speaker 1: their routines, were fully confident I'd never escape. By late afternoon,
[18:59] Speaker 1: the center containment had shifted into something tighter. I didn't
[19:04] Speaker 1: want to admit it yet, but the truth had crept
[19:06] Speaker 1: in around the edges. This place wasn't keeping me. It
[19:12] Speaker 1: felt like it was absorbing me, peace by peace, thought
[19:16] Speaker 1: by thought. So instead of trying to make discoveries outwardly,
[19:22] Speaker 1: I went to thoroughly investigate the town. I decided to
[19:26] Speaker 1: try the cellars behind the inn, behind the kitchen, past
[19:30] Speaker 1: the warped wooden door, I found a cramped hallway stacked
[19:34] Speaker 1: with dry sacks of root vegetables, and bundles of brittle herbs.
[19:39] Speaker 1: The air was thick with dust and something else, a
[19:43] Speaker 1: mineral sweetness like rain over rust. Beneath the sacks, a
[19:49] Speaker 1: hatch made of heavy wood and iron bracket swollen shut.
[19:56] Speaker 1: I tried to pry open with a boot and an
[19:58] Speaker 1: old tool I found nearby. The hinges groaned, then gave
[20:04] Speaker 1: a burst of heat, rolled out, warm, damp, unfamiliar. Beneath
[20:11] Speaker 1: the stairs carved into a surface that didn't look like
[20:15] Speaker 1: stone or timber. The texture was mat and slightly translucent, reddish,
[20:21] Speaker 1: with veins of darker pigment running through it in looping spirals.
[20:26] Speaker 1: I couldn't tell if it had been poured, grown, or
[20:29] Speaker 1: something between. From below, I sought answers. I hesitated, then
[20:39] Speaker 1: started down. The walls of the tunnel were slightly flexible
[20:44] Speaker 1: with a reddish tint. It was veined and warm, a
[20:49] Speaker 1: hybrid of resin and cartilage or some natural polymer grown
[20:53] Speaker 1: into architecture material I'd never seen or heard about. Every
[20:59] Speaker 1: few meters, the surface texture changed. In one place it
[21:03] Speaker 1: was smooth like bone, In another it ridged like a
[21:07] Speaker 1: fingerprints stretched across twenty feet. At certain angles I could
[21:13] Speaker 1: see embedded spirals in the walls like gloops of clotting
[21:16] Speaker 1: fluid hardened mid paw. The further I went, the more
[21:21] Speaker 1: the air changed. Soon it was heavy with damp and
[21:26] Speaker 1: a taste of iron. Underneath it, there was something sweeter.
[21:32] Speaker 1: It reminded me of my sister's first pregnancy, the smell
[21:36] Speaker 1: of vitamins, sweat and milk soaked laundry. At the bottom,
[21:42] Speaker 1: the corridor leveled into a low chamber, its walls sloping
[21:46] Speaker 1: inward like a womb mid contraction. In the center of
[21:50] Speaker 1: the room was a waist high pillar shaped like a spool,
[21:54] Speaker 1: fused to the floor. The surface around the pillar rippled.
[22:00] Speaker 1: I stepped back, and a thin channel in the wall
[22:04] Speaker 1: slid open behind me, like a vertical mouth opening behind skin.
[22:08] Speaker 1: Sideways inside, I saw the start of a staircase, spiraling
[22:14] Speaker 1: downward deeper. It felt like this place was offering my answers,
[22:21] Speaker 1: Yet my gut tightened in warning. I did not go further.
[22:27] Speaker 1: Whatever that opening was, it had waited for my presence.
[22:32] Speaker 1: Only when I approached did it open. It felt too welcoming.
[22:38] Speaker 1: I turned and climbed back out. By the time I
[22:42] Speaker 1: reached the hatch, the air above had cooled back in
[22:46] Speaker 1: the hallway, the inn was still lantern still burned. The
[22:51] Speaker 1: desk was manned the same man, same posture, his eyes
[22:56] Speaker 1: seemingly focused on something that wasn't there. When I passed
[23:01] Speaker 1: back in my room, I tossed and turned. I couldn't
[23:05] Speaker 1: sleep that night. I heard the basin fill again, slower
[23:10] Speaker 1: this time. The day after felt charged, and by nightfall
[23:18] Speaker 1: something had changed in the rhythm of Mirror's end. The
[23:22] Speaker 1: town had always felt orchestrated, the repetitive tasks, the choreographs, silences,
[23:28] Speaker 1: but now the pattern was breaking or accelerating. The townsfolk
[23:35] Speaker 1: no longer moved with the sluggish patience of sleep walkers.
[23:39] Speaker 1: They twitched when they moved, Subtle gestures across bodies while
[23:43] Speaker 1: they did their routine. A hand wiping a brow here,
[23:47] Speaker 1: echoed by another sharpening a blade there, intermingled with an
[23:51] Speaker 1: animalistic jitter. Something hiding behind the passivism, waiting to be
[23:57] Speaker 1: opened up there. Slackened faces softened into a quiet tension,
[24:04] Speaker 1: as if something inside them was pushing forward, pressuring the
[24:08] Speaker 1: surface of their skin. Eyes bulged slightly, but not with fear,
[24:15] Speaker 1: with purpose. It didn't feel like watching a crowd. It
[24:20] Speaker 1: felt like standing inside one large thing that had just
[24:23] Speaker 1: started to breathe. I backed away from the town square
[24:28] Speaker 1: and tried the church first, the only place away from
[24:31] Speaker 1: the people, but the door was locked. I crossed to
[24:36] Speaker 1: the inn. The lights were on and the windows glowed amber,
[24:41] Speaker 1: but the latch didn't budge. When I twisted it from inside.
[24:45] Speaker 1: I heard the soft click of metal, a lock being
[24:49] Speaker 1: turned by hand, then quiet, I stepped back into the
[24:58] Speaker 1: center of the square. The sky was visible now between rooftops,
[25:03] Speaker 1: and I realized something else had shifted. The stars had changed,
[25:10] Speaker 1: their positions were wrong. Smeared across the sky like spilled
[25:14] Speaker 1: oil dragged by an invisible brush. Some pulsed faintly in
[25:19] Speaker 1: spiral formations. I didn't recognize patterns that made no sense,
[25:24] Speaker 1: and the moon glowed red and hung too low, sitting
[25:28] Speaker 1: just above the valley rim as if drawn inward. I
[25:33] Speaker 1: turned toward the orchard path, not a leave. I already
[25:37] Speaker 1: knew that was impossible, but I needed distance, any distance
[25:42] Speaker 1: from the town square, from the coordination, from the idea
[25:46] Speaker 1: that I might end up like them. As I walked,
[25:50] Speaker 1: I passed the woman hanging rags along a line. Strangely,
[25:55] Speaker 1: her head rotated toward me, shifting the way a plant
[25:59] Speaker 1: might reord towards sunlight. Her body stayed completely still. Her
[26:04] Speaker 1: eyes didn't blink, they simply opened wider. Further down, two
[26:11] Speaker 1: men bent over the same crate, lifting it in perfect synchronization.
[26:16] Speaker 1: Breath held, I quickened my pace. I didn't make it far.
[26:23] Speaker 1: Half way to the orchard fence, I heard something wet
[26:26] Speaker 1: collapse behind me. I turned and saw the strange children
[26:30] Speaker 1: from the alley. They stood barefoot in the grass, arms
[26:34] Speaker 1: limbed at their sides, head tilted eerily left. I watched
[26:40] Speaker 1: in frozen horror as they stepped backward out of themselves,
[26:45] Speaker 1: shading skin like a costume, and fell to the ground
[26:49] Speaker 1: with a soft sound, like fabric soaked in broth. What
[26:53] Speaker 1: rose from inside was taller and moved clumsily, like it
[26:57] Speaker 1: wasn't used to its long limbs. Its face felt unfinished.
[27:02] Speaker 1: There was only a shallow curve of smooth red flesh
[27:06] Speaker 1: where the nose and eyes should have been. The raw
[27:09] Speaker 1: red started to harden. It looked like oxidization, but far
[27:13] Speaker 1: too fast, and soon its gangly frame had weight, a thinner,
[27:19] Speaker 1: more emaciated figure of another town'sperson, born or revealing its
[27:26] Speaker 1: true form. As one of the others, it turned its
[27:30] Speaker 1: attention to the well in the square. I tove behind
[27:34] Speaker 1: an old supply cart behind the fence with a broken wheel.
[27:38] Speaker 1: From there, I could see the well and the people
[27:42] Speaker 1: around it clearly. The bodies formed a ring around it.
[27:47] Speaker 1: A wet sound filled the air, dripping upward. Then something
[27:52] Speaker 1: hit the top of the cart with a heavy, glancing slap,
[27:56] Speaker 1: frightening me. I shifted just enough to see past the wheel.
[28:02] Speaker 1: Above me, hovering silently was the stone basin from my room,
[28:07] Speaker 1: suspended in the air, slowly rotating its contents. That reddish,
[28:14] Speaker 1: half coagulated water was draining upward, drawn to an unseen
[28:20] Speaker 1: source above the rooftops. The basin itself was perfectly level,
[28:25] Speaker 1: floating with intent, and below it, the townsfolk began to
[28:31] Speaker 1: hum in harmony as they each began to slowly crawl
[28:35] Speaker 1: into the well. Two broke off from the pack and
[28:39] Speaker 1: turned toward me. My eyes widened as I tried to
[28:44] Speaker 1: crawl out, but I felt drained of everything. I was
[28:49] Speaker 1: enabled to move a finger. My vision darkened as they approached,
[28:54] Speaker 1: and blacked out completely as I saw them reach out
[29:00] Speaker 1: to my hiding spot. I came to in my room
[29:12] Speaker 1: at the inn. The lantern of the desk burned low,
[29:16] Speaker 1: flickering against the ceiling, like it was struggling to stay lit.
[29:20] Speaker 1: I sat up slowly, disoriented by the absence of memory.
[29:25] Speaker 1: I couldn't remember anything after hiding beneath the cart. The
[29:29] Speaker 1: sheets beneath me were dry, but my clothes clung to
[29:33] Speaker 1: my skin, damp heavy. I touched my sleeve and brought
[29:38] Speaker 1: my fingers to my nose. The same bit of scent
[29:42] Speaker 1: from the basin, old copper salt, and something sweeter underneath,
[29:49] Speaker 1: like boiled milk left too long in the sun. I
[29:53] Speaker 1: rolled my sleeve back. The sichel had changed. Where it
[30:00] Speaker 1: had been a rough spiral, inked like a birthmark, it
[30:04] Speaker 1: had now spread its lines thinner, more intricate, curling like
[30:08] Speaker 1: veins across the inside of my arm and wrapping beneath
[30:12] Speaker 1: the bicep. The flesher covered was pink, flushed, and worn
[30:17] Speaker 1: to the touch, not inflamed or wounded. It didn't hurt,
[30:22] Speaker 1: if anything, It pulsed with a rhythm. I recognized it
[30:27] Speaker 1: had sinked to my heart beat. The hallway outside was quiet,
[30:35] Speaker 1: but the air carried a different weight. The building itself
[30:39] Speaker 1: had changed. The walls. Those still straight seemed to lean
[30:43] Speaker 1: closer perceptibly, as if pressure had built up behind the plaster.
[30:49] Speaker 1: The wood along the trim had darkened with moisture, and
[30:52] Speaker 1: the wallpaper at the corners was curling away, exposing seams beneath.
[30:58] Speaker 1: There was no one at the front desk the time.
[31:01] Speaker 1: I moved, slowly, listening for sound, the creak of footsteps,
[31:07] Speaker 1: a whisper, a breath, But the only thing I could
[31:11] Speaker 1: hear was the faint creaking of the building itself. Until now,
[31:18] Speaker 1: I'd spend every waking moment in mirror's end trying to
[31:22] Speaker 1: leave it, or, failing that, trying to understand it. But
[31:27] Speaker 1: the more I moved, the more it moved with me.
[31:31] Speaker 1: The more I've resisted, the less it needed to react.
[31:37] Speaker 1: This town or whatever had rooted itself beneath it was methodical, patient.
[31:44] Speaker 1: It didn't need obedience or panic. It only needed participation,
[31:50] Speaker 1: and I had been participating since the moment I took
[31:54] Speaker 1: the key. I thought about the basin, the way it
[31:58] Speaker 1: floated above the square, how it turned slowly in place,
[32:02] Speaker 1: perfectly level, dripping upward, like it was feeding something that
[32:06] Speaker 1: existed outside of gravity or time. It hadn't been symbolic.
[32:13] Speaker 1: It had been functional, maybe a censor, maybe a sacrament,
[32:19] Speaker 1: or maybe something simpler, a part of the machine that
[32:23] Speaker 1: was building me into whatever came next. If the process
[32:28] Speaker 1: couldn't be escaped, maybe it could be disrupted. Maybe there
[32:33] Speaker 1: was still something in this system that would break if
[32:36] Speaker 1: I pulled too hard on the wrong place. Either way,
[32:41] Speaker 1: it was my only option because all the exits to
[32:45] Speaker 1: the inn were locked and sealed. They didn't even budge
[32:49] Speaker 1: when pushed, which left one place I could go. The hatch.
[32:59] Speaker 1: The rusted hand or moved more easily this time, as
[33:02] Speaker 1: if it were welcoming me, and it no longer smelled
[33:05] Speaker 1: like rot, just damp and meaty. As I ascended, I
[33:11] Speaker 1: immediately noticed the change. Before the tunnel had resembled a
[33:16] Speaker 1: resin mold, something grown but still structured. Now it had softened,
[33:23] Speaker 1: like the material was still forming itself. The walls were thicker, rounder,
[33:29] Speaker 1: and pulsed ever so slightly under the surface, as if
[33:33] Speaker 1: liquid moved within. The air glowed faintly red, as if
[33:38] Speaker 1: filtered through capillaries. The further I moved, the warmer it got.
[33:45] Speaker 1: The wall gave slightly beneath my fingers, like bushing into
[33:48] Speaker 1: a pregnant stomach. Something twitched on the other side of
[33:53] Speaker 1: the membrane. I looked closer. Behind the translucent flesh, I
[33:59] Speaker 1: saw shape suspended and fluid, a spine without ribs, a
[34:04] Speaker 1: mouth limbs. The smell began to shift, iron, milk, plastic skin.
[34:14] Speaker 1: It reminded me of neonatal wards, of old berthing rooms,
[34:18] Speaker 1: of hospital cribs. In the dark. A tunnel widen ahead
[34:23] Speaker 1: of me. I stepped into a chamber and sat directly
[34:27] Speaker 1: beneath the town center, round and evenly proportioned, like the
[34:31] Speaker 1: cavity beneath a joint. The air was warmer here, heavier,
[34:37] Speaker 1: and carried a low pressure that pressed against my ears
[34:40] Speaker 1: and made my footstep sound muffled. Seven archways ring the chamber,
[34:47] Speaker 1: spaced with mathematical care. Each glowed faintly from within the light,
[34:52] Speaker 1: distinct in tone and temperature. One radiated a soft, arterial red,
[34:59] Speaker 1: another carried a sickly gold like old pile under lamp light.
[35:04] Speaker 1: Others glimmered in other worldly hues, their color shifting when
[35:08] Speaker 1: I tried to focus on them. Directly. At the center
[35:13] Speaker 1: stood a low pedestal gown from the same resinous substance
[35:16] Speaker 1: as the tunnel. Its surface was smooth in some places
[35:20] Speaker 1: and ridged in others, as though it had hardened round
[35:24] Speaker 1: objects placed there repeatedly over time. Resting in shallow impressions.
[35:29] Speaker 1: Along its top were several basins. They were identical to
[35:36] Speaker 1: the one that had been in my room. Some were
[35:39] Speaker 1: filled nearly to the brim with thick, dark fluid that
[35:43] Speaker 1: moved slowly, resisting gravity in subtle ways. Others had collapsed inwards,
[35:49] Speaker 1: their rims sagging split as if they had been discarded
[35:52] Speaker 1: after use. One hovered just above its recess, turning slowly
[35:58] Speaker 1: thin threads of liquid lifting upward from its surface and
[36:02] Speaker 1: vanishing into the air above. Behind the pedestal, the black
[36:08] Speaker 1: wall curved upward into a wide spiral, rendered in hard
[36:12] Speaker 1: blackened resin. The shapes were anatomical but abstracted, and the
[36:19] Speaker 1: spiral's beginning was a human form, proportion normally upright and intact.
[36:26] Speaker 1: Further along the forms stretched limbs lengthening beyond balance, joints
[36:31] Speaker 1: reorented for reach rather than stability. Past that the figure opened,
[36:39] Speaker 1: the torso hollowed into la tisework. Organs reduced the supporting
[36:44] Speaker 1: structures At the outermost curve, the form no longer resembled
[36:48] Speaker 1: a body at all, if folded inward, forming a looped shape,
[36:53] Speaker 1: sealed and continuous like an umbilical coil, with no external
[36:57] Speaker 1: lankor Each face ran a band of minute engraving, hundreds
[37:06] Speaker 1: of names, each carved with care, aligned in a symmetrical way.
[37:13] Speaker 1: My name was at the very bottom, like I was
[37:17] Speaker 1: the final step, but I was not willing to let
[37:21] Speaker 1: that happen. I stepped forward and took hold of the basin,
[37:26] Speaker 1: marked with the same fine cracking pattern as the one
[37:29] Speaker 1: I'd been given. The sigil at its base mirrored the
[37:32] Speaker 1: one spreading beneath my skin. It felt warm in my hands,
[37:37] Speaker 1: neither fragile nor heavy, balanced, and away the suggested it
[37:41] Speaker 1: had been made to be carried. I lifted it and
[37:46] Speaker 1: brought it down against the pedestal. The basin didn't break.
[37:54] Speaker 1: Its form softened and folded inward, collapsing in on itself
[37:59] Speaker 1: like wax, loose incohesion, the fluid inside lifting briefly before
[38:04] Speaker 1: dispersing into the resin beneath. The pedestal absorbed it without resistance,
[38:10] Speaker 1: the impression filling in smoothly as that the basin had
[38:14] Speaker 1: never been there at all. The chamber reacted immediately. The
[38:20] Speaker 1: tunnel behind me sealed shot with a thick muscular contraction
[38:25] Speaker 1: that reverberated through the floor. Heat searched through the room,
[38:30] Speaker 1: sharp and dry, carrying the scent of scorched calcium and
[38:33] Speaker 1: chemical antiseptic. The light within the archways flared, intensifying in
[38:39] Speaker 1: color and brightness, and I felt as subtle shift and
[38:43] Speaker 1: pressure as something reoriented around me. From one of the arches,
[38:50] Speaker 1: A figure stepped forward. It was the man from the inn.
[38:56] Speaker 1: He wore the same black garments, though they clung wetly
[38:59] Speaker 1: to his frien now darkened by fluid that seeped steadily
[39:03] Speaker 1: from his joints, making it look more like a priest's gown.
[39:08] Speaker 1: His posture had changed. The alignment of his spine was
[39:11] Speaker 1: too fluid, each movement rolling smoothly into the next, as
[39:16] Speaker 1: though his bones had learned a different way to cooperate.
[39:21] Speaker 1: He stopped a few steps from the pedestal and raised
[39:25] Speaker 1: his arm. The sigil along his forearm had fully bloomed,
[39:30] Speaker 1: expanded into a complex network of curves and channels, the
[39:34] Speaker 1: pulse visibly beneath the skin. It was complete in a
[39:38] Speaker 1: way mine was not. Its symmetry precise, its rhythm steady.
[39:45] Speaker 1: When he opened his mouth, no words came. Instead, a
[39:51] Speaker 1: second face pressed forward from within his throat. Small and undeveloped,
[39:57] Speaker 1: I sealed beneath thin folds of skin. It watched without expression,
[40:03] Speaker 1: its presence explanatory rather than threatening, like this was simply
[40:08] Speaker 1: the next demonstration in a process already under way. I
[40:14] Speaker 1: stepped back instinctively, and my shoulder brushed the spiral wall
[40:19] Speaker 1: behind me. The moment my arm brushed the spiral wall,
[40:25] Speaker 1: I felt the contact register like a pressure plate, engaging
[40:28] Speaker 1: deep within the structure the citul and my arm flared,
[40:33] Speaker 1: not in pain, in clarity, and a single word came
[40:38] Speaker 1: to mind, prophecy. At first I thought I was still
[40:45] Speaker 1: in the chamber, but the air was too still. The
[40:49] Speaker 1: light had shifted. There was no tension any more. Every basin,
[40:55] Speaker 1: including the one I had tried to destroy, now floated
[40:58] Speaker 1: above the pedestal, hovering inches above their depressions. Their surfaces
[41:04] Speaker 1: were calm, their contents full, held in suspension, like they
[41:08] Speaker 1: knew the order of things and were waiting for their
[41:11] Speaker 1: turn around the chambers that the people of Marror's end,
[41:16] Speaker 1: the innkeeper, the cleric, even the beings, the children became
[41:22] Speaker 1: before them a basin. Each bore a sigil fully bloomed
[41:27] Speaker 1: across their flesh, some on their forearms, others on their backs, throats,
[41:33] Speaker 1: even their cheeks. They raised their hands or their shoulders
[41:38] Speaker 1: or the backs of their necks, aligning the siedels over
[41:41] Speaker 1: the bowls, and then they poured whatever it was. It
[41:51] Speaker 1: came out slow, thick, with motion, lightless, and impossibly dense.
[41:57] Speaker 1: How identity might behave if it could be disi diilled,
[42:01] Speaker 1: a slowing off of selfhood in liquid form. One by one,
[42:06] Speaker 1: the townsfolk offered their essence into the air. The strands
[42:11] Speaker 1: hovered weightless, then bent upward, all of them into a
[42:16] Speaker 1: single hollow space above the pedestal. Something was coming through.
[42:24] Speaker 1: It didn't descend, It condensed. At first it looked like
[42:29] Speaker 1: vapor catching the threat of fluid mid air, But then
[42:34] Speaker 1: structure took hold, a spine without vertebrae, mouths folding over
[42:39] Speaker 1: the mouths, arms that ended in gestures, not hands. Wherever
[42:44] Speaker 1: it looked, the air rotated into spirals, like water circling
[42:49] Speaker 1: the drain above a sinkhole. Its eyes were sigels, opening
[42:54] Speaker 1: and closing like mouths tasting the room. It sang without breath,
[42:59] Speaker 1: notes folding backwards, inverted hymns. But there was an underlying sound,
[43:06] Speaker 1: the only thing that had anything I could recognize from
[43:09] Speaker 1: this known world. It sounded vaguely like a baby crying,
[43:15] Speaker 1: echoed and distant, the sounds of new beginnings. Images played
[43:22] Speaker 1: across it, like projections through wet silk, failed shapes, partial transformations,
[43:29] Speaker 1: but undoubtedly rebirth. It wasn't creating followers, it was remaking
[43:36] Speaker 1: them in its twisted image, an imperfect ideal sold to salvation.
[43:44] Speaker 1: The last basin remained untouched mine. I thought back to
[43:51] Speaker 1: the names Mine filled out in the bottom corner, making
[43:55] Speaker 1: a perfect symmetrical list. The final tally counted up from
[43:59] Speaker 1: year years of dedication, the final peace of the puzzle.
[44:05] Speaker 1: The vision pulled inward, tightened the God. If that was
[44:10] Speaker 1: what it was paused in expectation, I saw myself across
[44:17] Speaker 1: the chamber, stepping forward, my own schigul fully opened, bleeding
[44:22] Speaker 1: that same substance into the air. The basin accepted it.
[44:28] Speaker 1: The cycle completed, and just as the God opened one
[44:33] Speaker 1: final eye, not like the others, something clearer, something meant
[44:39] Speaker 1: to see. The vision broke. The spiral wall fell away
[44:44] Speaker 1: from my shoulder. The chamber snapped back into focus. The
[44:49] Speaker 1: air had changed. They were already moving me toward my ball.
[44:56] Speaker 1: I was being carried hands beneath my arms, more at
[45:00] Speaker 1: my legs, lifting with a kind of reverence. The basin
[45:05] Speaker 1: sat ahead of me, floating where I had seen it
[45:08] Speaker 1: in the vision. Thin strands of fluid veined outward from
[45:12] Speaker 1: its sides, connecting to the central hollow above the pedestal,
[45:16] Speaker 1: like umbilicals. The god hadn't reformed yet, but something pressed
[45:22] Speaker 1: against the air, await a presence, waiting to condense again.
[45:28] Speaker 1: My forearm burned, the sigel had begun to open. They
[45:33] Speaker 1: lowered me toward the basin. The others were already in place,
[45:39] Speaker 1: the clerk, the woman with the roots, the children, their
[45:43] Speaker 1: heads bowed, their arms slack. Each stood beside a filled ball,
[45:48] Speaker 1: the sigels still weeping faint trails of essence into the air.
[45:55] Speaker 1: The moment my skin touched the rim, the basin flared.
[46:00] Speaker 1: My sigel stung open like a blister under pressure, the
[46:03] Speaker 1: heat radiating inward. I felt something shift inside me, detail
[46:09] Speaker 1: being pulled forward. My bearers left join their own basins,
[46:14] Speaker 1: threads being pulled from them as they neared until full
[46:18] Speaker 1: strands of their being were slowly allowed to be drained.
[46:23] Speaker 1: I thought I was locked in as they had been,
[46:27] Speaker 1: But in a final push of defiance, I pulled away.
[46:33] Speaker 1: The drawer slowed but didn't stop. Threads had already left
[46:37] Speaker 1: me thin and shimmering. I saw my arm against my chest,
[46:42] Speaker 1: staggering back from the pedestal. Then I turned and struck
[46:47] Speaker 1: the pedestal itself, the root for connection. The sound cracked
[46:53] Speaker 1: across the chamber, like reality buckling above. The forming guard
[46:59] Speaker 1: twisted did in place, its limbs unspooling too far, the spirals,
[47:04] Speaker 1: and its eyes collapsing inward. It didn't scream, It folded,
[47:10] Speaker 1: its mouthless shape, giving off a sound like pressure, violently
[47:14] Speaker 1: equalizing a howl of absence. In completeness, the resin walls split,
[47:22] Speaker 1: venting heat and chemical smelling steam. Basin shattered, one by one,
[47:28] Speaker 1: their contents lifting skyward before reversing mid air, slamming down
[47:33] Speaker 1: in sprays that hid the floor, the walls, the townsfolk.
[47:38] Speaker 1: They convulsed, every single one, backs, arching joints, locking muscles,
[47:45] Speaker 1: seizing beneath skin that blistered from within. But they didn't scream.
[47:50] Speaker 1: Already too drained of whatever was leaving them to move
[47:54] Speaker 1: of their own volition. Their siguals flared with light before
[47:59] Speaker 1: dimming to ash. Some dropped to their knees, Others collapsed backward,
[48:05] Speaker 1: arms open and quite release as their bodies twitched and
[48:09] Speaker 1: clenched over and over until motion drained from them entirely.
[48:16] Speaker 1: They didn't die, but there was nothing left to move them.
[48:20] Speaker 1: Whatever they had given, they had truly given. There was
[48:25] Speaker 1: no strength left to hold themselves up. The archways flared
[48:30] Speaker 1: one last time and sealed one by one behind sharp
[48:34] Speaker 1: pulses of red light. They were one offering too short.
[48:39] Speaker 1: Whatever they were trying had failed by a small fraction minute,
[48:45] Speaker 1: but enough. The guard collapsed inward, its body liquefying mid
[48:51] Speaker 1: air into a film of suspended sheen, hovering above the
[48:55] Speaker 1: pedestal like the top layer of still blood. The air
[49:00] Speaker 1: like scorched milk and iron, not rot failed birth. I
[49:07] Speaker 1: ran The tunnel walls still flexed, and the scent of
[49:11] Speaker 1: the thing's retreat clung to everything. But no one followed,
[49:16] Speaker 1: No one stopped me, no one even looked. They couldn't.
[49:23] Speaker 1: They had spent themselves in full, and the system no
[49:27] Speaker 1: longer had their final peace it had broken. I came
[49:35] Speaker 1: through the same slope I descended days ago, though the
[49:38] Speaker 1: incline felt steeper now, the soil brittle and warm beneath
[49:42] Speaker 1: my hands, my lungs burned. The air itself had changed,
[49:47] Speaker 1: thick with a chemical tang that had haunted the tunnels below.
[49:52] Speaker 1: The thing that had risen and failed to root something
[49:56] Speaker 1: and tried to live. Mirror's end was collapsing. The town's
[50:03] Speaker 1: corr had buckled inward. Roofs lay folded over themselves. Walls
[50:08] Speaker 1: had split from withdrawal, as if a structure that had
[50:12] Speaker 1: never been meant to hold shape was finally letting go.
[50:16] Speaker 1: Streets I had walked were now cracked wide open, leading
[50:20] Speaker 1: slow streams of red fluid that pulsed and congealed like
[50:23] Speaker 1: clotting arteries. Veins thick, root like cords of glistening tissue
[50:30] Speaker 1: ran along beams and foundation stones, twisting around door frames,
[50:35] Speaker 1: threading through shutters and window panes. They wrapped the town
[50:39] Speaker 1: square like vines in full bloom, smothering the old stone
[50:43] Speaker 1: work beneath a living let tease of wet pressure near
[50:47] Speaker 1: the clapsed in the basin I had once watched from
[50:51] Speaker 1: bed now lay shattered in the dirt. It hissed faintly,
[50:56] Speaker 1: cooling from a long burn. A soft plume of vapor
[51:00] Speaker 1: called up and was lost in the morning stillness, followed
[51:04] Speaker 1: by the faint sound of wet settling. At the edge
[51:08] Speaker 1: of the valley, I found the forest untouched. The trees
[51:12] Speaker 1: still swayed with early light filtering through their branches. Leaves
[51:17] Speaker 1: shifted with calm, natural rhythm. The trail of dew called
[51:21] Speaker 1: the sun. Everything beyond the town looked exactly as it
[51:26] Speaker 1: had when I first arrived. The air didn't walk around it,
[51:30] Speaker 1: The ground didn't pull me back. Whatever had bound me
[51:34] Speaker 1: to Marrow's End, whatever looped the land into a closed circuit,
[51:39] Speaker 1: had been broken. I saw the same tree line, the
[51:44] Speaker 1: same rocky outcrop where I had parked, but they no
[51:47] Speaker 1: longer held that dreamlike haze. They were just trees, just stone.
[51:54] Speaker 1: I started walking. As I reached the place where the
[51:59] Speaker 1: road once reject me, where I turned back again and again.
[52:03] Speaker 1: I stepped forward. My foot touched gravel, solid, cold and undistorted,
[52:11] Speaker 1: and a sharp pain irrupted up my arm. I staggered,
[52:15] Speaker 1: clutching my forearm. Breath caught. When I pulled back my
[52:20] Speaker 1: sleeve The sigual was gone, but the skin beneath was
[52:25] Speaker 1: red and raw, the skin not carved away, but seared
[52:29] Speaker 1: to the edge of pealing. The lines of it still
[52:32] Speaker 1: echoed faintly in the damaged tissue, but they no longer pulsed,
[52:37] Speaker 1: no longer claimed me. Pain started to root, but relief
[52:43] Speaker 1: came with it, as it felt natural, a real wound,
[52:48] Speaker 1: not one in still through something I couldn't comprehend. I
[52:53] Speaker 1: stood there a moment longer, letting the air reach me fully.
[52:58] Speaker 1: Then I ran half way down the switchback. I stopped
[53:05] Speaker 1: to breathe and turn back. From this vantage, I could
[53:09] Speaker 1: see the whole valley. The red tendrils were still shifting,
[53:13] Speaker 1: still rippling across the earth. They moved without pattern, now unraveling, struggling,
[53:22] Speaker 1: and then without warning, the town flattened. The collapse was inexplosive.
[53:30] Speaker 1: It was a surrender, the way lungs deflate after breath.
[53:34] Speaker 1: As left, the veins dissolved into vapor. Even the wooden
[53:39] Speaker 1: sign mirror's end for those returning, fell into itself. All
[53:47] Speaker 1: of it vanished in its place, clean dart, a shallow
[53:53] Speaker 1: depression with something had almost happened when something had tried
[53:58] Speaker 1: to be borne. The world looked untouched, but I knew better.
[54:08] Speaker 1: A few days past, I walked until signal returned. The
[54:13] Speaker 1: organization responded quickly, clearly relieved. They said they nearly sent
[54:18] Speaker 1: someone to check, having understood that remoteness had probably caused
[54:22] Speaker 1: the delay. To them, it was no harm done. I
[54:26] Speaker 1: had just been delayed due to natural causes or work causes.
[54:31] Speaker 1: I filed the report recommendation, do not pursue development rational
[54:40] Speaker 1: unstable terrain, deep sink or risk, evidence of active mineral
[54:44] Speaker 1: reaching and soil instability, poor investment, high liability. It was clean,
[54:52] Speaker 1: technical and irrefutable. It wasn't a lie, of course, but
[54:58] Speaker 1: enough of the truth remained in the language to keep
[55:00] Speaker 1: others away, leaving out the parts that would get me investigated.
[55:06] Speaker 1: They accepted it without question. I should have felt victorious. Instead,
[55:13] Speaker 1: I sat in my apartment days later, staring at the
[55:17] Speaker 1: blank page of a confession, wanting some way to document
[55:20] Speaker 1: what I'd seen while it was still fresh, wondering how
[55:24] Speaker 1: to categorize what I'd seen. The libation, the name's eedged
[55:28] Speaker 1: in sequence the thing that had formed from them. It
[55:33] Speaker 1: hadn't demanded worship or sacrifice. It had simply wanted to happen.
[55:39] Speaker 1: Each person, each schedule, each basin a step in a process,
[55:44] Speaker 1: the refined shape and memory into something more. A filtration
[55:49] Speaker 1: of what made us human ascended into Eldritch's rebirth. I
[55:54] Speaker 1: remember the diagram, the spiral of becoming, the hollowing, the fold,
[56:00] Speaker 1: the return to origin through replication. What was its end goal? Transcendence,
[56:08] Speaker 1: a new age on Earth, some second genesis we weren't
[56:12] Speaker 1: opposed to witness, or maybe a return to something older
[56:17] Speaker 1: than unknown history. I don't know, and I don't think
[56:23] Speaker 1: I ever will, and that scares me
