[0:02] Speaker 1: Dentists are the worst patience. We all know the signs,
[0:06] Speaker 1: but we also know all the excuses. It started a
[0:10] Speaker 1: week ago with a deep ache in my jaw. At
[0:13] Speaker 1: first it was sharp and persistent, Then it settled into
[0:17] Speaker 1: a low, pulsing pressure that spread up to the side
[0:21] Speaker 1: of my face. For the past few days, I'd catch
[0:25] Speaker 1: myself grinding against it without knowing, biting down just to
[0:29] Speaker 1: meet the resistance. It got bad enough that I had
[0:33] Speaker 1: to take an X ray between appointments. I thought maybe
[0:36] Speaker 1: I'd missed something obvious, like a cracked cusp and inflame ligament,
[0:41] Speaker 1: but everything came up clean. I told myself it would
[0:46] Speaker 1: ease up in a day or two. Most things too.
[0:53] Speaker 1: I work at a small dental practice, which consists of
[0:57] Speaker 1: three rooms in a waiting area no life than a
[1:00] Speaker 1: living room. The building had once been a bank long
[1:04] Speaker 1: before my time, and the old vault door still sat
[1:07] Speaker 1: bolted to the rear hallway wall, a relic we couldn't
[1:11] Speaker 1: afford to remove. We used the volt as a supply room. Now.
[1:16] Speaker 1: Stock came in through the side entrance and got stored
[1:18] Speaker 1: behind that heavy door where the safety deposit boxes used
[1:22] Speaker 1: to be. I'd taken over the practice from my mentor
[1:25] Speaker 1: nearly twenty years ago, back when the carpets were new
[1:29] Speaker 1: and the NHS still sent inspectors. Since then, I've had
[1:34] Speaker 1: budgets slashed, suppliers cutting corners, fewer staff, and fewer patients
[1:39] Speaker 1: who could afford regular care. But I kept going. The
[1:45] Speaker 1: girl in the chair today couldn't have been more than eight.
[1:49] Speaker 1: She was nervous, fidgety, her small hands tugging at the
[1:52] Speaker 1: cuff of a school jumper as we went through the
[1:55] Speaker 1: usual questions like how many times a day do you brush?
[2:00] Speaker 1: And manual or electric, all of which her mother answered.
[2:05] Speaker 1: She chipped one of a moler's chewing on a hard sweet,
[2:08] Speaker 1: and a small cavity had opened up beneath the crack,
[2:12] Speaker 1: just deep enough to neat filling before it turned into
[2:14] Speaker 1: something worse. She looked terrified. It's just a small filling,
[2:22] Speaker 1: that's all, I reassured her, keeping my voice low and easy,
[2:27] Speaker 1: the tone I'd perfected over years to calm my patience.
[2:32] Speaker 1: Nothing you'll even notice after a day. She gave me
[2:36] Speaker 1: a look when she wasn't so sure. I had one
[2:40] Speaker 1: just last week myself, I added, opening my mouth so
[2:44] Speaker 1: she could get a good view and pointing towards her
[2:46] Speaker 1: tooth with a gloved finger. Didn't hurt at all, barely
[2:51] Speaker 1: felt it really a lie. Technically, the ache had been
[2:57] Speaker 1: waking me up some nights now, a deep throbbing thing
[3:01] Speaker 1: under the back of my molar. They'd patched with one
[3:03] Speaker 1: of the new composite kits. That's what I get for
[3:07] Speaker 1: letting a student dental nurse practice on me. But I
[3:10] Speaker 1: assured this girl that she had nothing to worry about.
[3:14] Speaker 1: I had perfected this. She seems to relax a little
[3:18] Speaker 1: at that, enough to lean back without gripping the chair
[3:21] Speaker 1: arms so tightly. Kelly stood to my left, ready with
[3:26] Speaker 1: a suction watching the girl more than the tools. She'd
[3:31] Speaker 1: been assisting in this practice longer than I'd been running it.
[3:34] Speaker 1: She had her good instinct for nerves, knew when to
[3:37] Speaker 1: speak and when not to. I gave her a small
[3:40] Speaker 1: nod of approval and adjusted the light as I worked.
[3:46] Speaker 1: A slow pulsing pressure pressed in my jaw, which seemed
[3:50] Speaker 1: to keep in time with the drill. I ignored it. When
[3:55] Speaker 1: the girl and her mother left, I cleaned down the
[3:58] Speaker 1: room and logged the notes into the cyst them another
[4:01] Speaker 1: job done outside the afternoon had started the slide into gray,
[4:07] Speaker 1: the sky thick with a kind of clouds that promised rain.
[4:11] Speaker 1: By evening, I was halfway through preparing for my next
[4:16] Speaker 1: patient when the receptionist buzzed through. Mister Collins is here,
[4:21] Speaker 1: early says, is in quite a bit of discomfort. I
[4:25] Speaker 1: checked the screen. Collins had only been in two weeks ago,
[4:30] Speaker 1: a standard cavity, nothing remarkable, composite filling, same batch as
[4:35] Speaker 1: the others. Just as I was about to call him,
[4:39] Speaker 1: I caught a notification at the bottom of my screen.
[4:43] Speaker 1: It was another email from my daughter Claire. I didn't
[4:48] Speaker 1: have time to open it now. She was still abroad,
[4:51] Speaker 1: enjoying her twenties, moving from place to place. She mentioned
[4:55] Speaker 1: before that she didn't trust the dentists out there. Just
[4:59] Speaker 1: a few weeks ago, I sent her some spare composite kits, adhesives,
[5:03] Speaker 1: and a new pack of itch and bond they wear
[5:06] Speaker 1: extras from the new supplier. They sent more than I ordered,
[5:10] Speaker 1: probably hoping to keep me on as a regular customer.
[5:15] Speaker 1: I sighed and robed at my jaw. Then I called
[5:19] Speaker 1: Collins through. He shuffled into the chair with a stiff weariness.
[5:26] Speaker 1: He was in his mid forties. Over the ten years
[5:30] Speaker 1: he'd been coming here, I'd learned that he was a
[5:32] Speaker 1: factory worker, and the kind of man who didn't complain
[5:35] Speaker 1: unless something was really wrong. It's been aching like hell,
[5:41] Speaker 1: he said, keeps me up some nights. Feels like it's moving,
[5:45] Speaker 1: if that makes sense, I nodded, already pulling up the
[5:50] Speaker 1: X ray from last time. Any swelling fever, no fever,
[5:56] Speaker 1: A bit tender, hurts more at night. There is a
[6:00] Speaker 1: dull sort of pressure. I lined him up for a
[6:04] Speaker 1: fresh X ray, tilting the sensor to catch the apex properly.
[6:09] Speaker 1: My jaw throbbed as I worked, as if he were
[6:12] Speaker 1: keeping pace with the hum of the machine. I tried
[6:16] Speaker 1: not to rub at it while he watched. When the
[6:19] Speaker 1: image loaded, I pulled up the last one beside it
[6:22] Speaker 1: for comparison. I'd taken it barely a fortnight ago. I
[6:28] Speaker 1: was expecting a slight shift, perhaps a faint halo at
[6:31] Speaker 1: the apex, something I could attribute to early Pubertis, or
[6:35] Speaker 1: a missed microfracture, something familiar. Instead, the interior of the
[6:43] Speaker 1: tooth looked dramatically worse. There were voids and areas beneath
[6:49] Speaker 1: the enamel that had been solid a week ago, now hollowed.
[6:54] Speaker 1: The density wasn't right, and on closer inspection there was
[6:59] Speaker 1: a neat round a hole. I leaned in closer to
[7:03] Speaker 1: the monitor. I've been staring at dental films for thirty years,
[7:08] Speaker 1: and I'd never seen voids like that, clean, deliberate, looking,
[7:13] Speaker 1: almost surgical, except no drill had done this. Still, I
[7:19] Speaker 1: kept my tone calm when I turned back to Collins.
[7:22] Speaker 1: No point worrying him unnecessarily. All right, let's have her
[7:27] Speaker 1: closer look. Sit back for me. He settled into the
[7:32] Speaker 1: chair again, slower this time, rubbing his sjaw the WinCE
[7:36] Speaker 1: as he went. I called through for one of the
[7:39] Speaker 1: dental nurses to come in and assist, and told her
[7:42] Speaker 1: I'd be removing the feeling to take a closer look.
[7:46] Speaker 1: Kelly came in, composites failing already. She asked, pulling on gloves,
[7:53] Speaker 1: maybe I need a proper lock. I said, she didn't.
[7:59] Speaker 1: Ask to see the aray, and set up the tray.
[8:02] Speaker 1: Despite her lack of questions, we both knew patients didn't
[8:06] Speaker 1: usually end up back in the chair this soon, unless
[8:09] Speaker 1: something had gone wrong. Collins lay back and waited. I
[8:15] Speaker 1: had just a delight, checked the anesthetic had taken hold,
[8:19] Speaker 1: and gave it another minute, just to be sure. No
[8:23] Speaker 1: need to rush. The drill felt heavier than usual in
[8:27] Speaker 1: my hand. I worked carefully, easing through the composite in slow,
[8:32] Speaker 1: deliberate passes. Kelly held the suction ready without a word.
[8:38] Speaker 1: Something about the way the filling lifted didn't sit right.
[8:43] Speaker 1: The material crumbled away too easily, coming loose in brittle
[8:47] Speaker 1: flakes instead of the solid, predictable chunks I'd placed beneath it.
[8:53] Speaker 1: The tooth wasn't solid, The structure had given up on
[8:57] Speaker 1: holding shape. Kelly noticed it too. I didn't need to
[9:03] Speaker 1: look to know she was watching. When I glanced up,
[9:07] Speaker 1: she met my eye with a silent, questioning look. I
[9:11] Speaker 1: gave a small nod. Carry on. I irrigated the cavity,
[9:19] Speaker 1: cleared what debris I could suction, catching the fragments as
[9:22] Speaker 1: they floated free. The deeper I went, the more of
[9:27] Speaker 1: it seemed to fall apart under the burr. It shouldn't
[9:33] Speaker 1: have looked like that, not this soon, not from a
[9:37] Speaker 1: simple filling. Kelly handed me the end of probe without asking.
[9:42] Speaker 1: I tapped gently at the exposed ent in probing for stability.
[9:47] Speaker 1: The tips sank deeper than it should have. Catching an
[9:50] Speaker 1: avoid beneath the surface, I paused, leaning in closer, adjusting
[9:56] Speaker 1: the light for a better view. The walls of the
[10:00] Speaker 1: tooth flexed under pressure and gave way too easily. Beneath it,
[10:05] Speaker 1: all beneath what should have been a solid structure was space,
[10:13] Speaker 1: I felt Kelly nervously watching me work. I rensed again,
[10:18] Speaker 1: dried the area, and leaned in with a mirror. The
[10:21] Speaker 1: void seemed to taper off, somewhere deeper than I could reach,
[10:25] Speaker 1: a narrow track, disappearing beneath what remained of the root structure.
[10:31] Speaker 1: It wasn't a crack, it wasn't decay. It looked, for
[10:35] Speaker 1: lack of a better word, eton technically it was still repairable.
[10:44] Speaker 1: The nerve looked untouched, and there was just enough structure
[10:48] Speaker 1: left to rebuild on. Nothing a decent lining and fresh
[10:51] Speaker 1: composite couldn't shore up for now. Let's get the filling kit,
[10:57] Speaker 1: I said, sitting back. Kelly peeled off her gloves and
[11:02] Speaker 1: went to the supply cupboard. I heard the box tear
[11:05] Speaker 1: as she opened it. They make these things dinner every year,
[11:10] Speaker 1: she said, frowning at the mess. You so much as
[11:14] Speaker 1: look at the strip wrong and it bursts. The packaging
[11:18] Speaker 1: was flimsy because the supplier was cheap. I'd started ordering
[11:23] Speaker 1: from abroad when the budget shrank further. It was from
[11:26] Speaker 1: somewhere eastern European, and half the instructions were printed in
[11:30] Speaker 1: a language I couldn't read. We've been running lean for years.
[11:35] Speaker 1: You cut corners, so you had to. I worked quickly
[11:40] Speaker 1: but carefully, lining the cavity and rebuilding what I could.
[11:45] Speaker 1: It wasn't perfect, but it would hold for now. Colin
[11:50] Speaker 1: sat up slowly once I was done, stretching his numb jaw.
[11:55] Speaker 1: Give that a day or two to settle. I told him,
[11:59] Speaker 1: if he gives you any more trouble, you know where
[12:01] Speaker 1: to find me. He nodded, Thanks, Doc, we'll keep an
[12:07] Speaker 1: eye on it. Don't hesitate to reach out. Kelly stripped
[12:14] Speaker 1: off her gloves and started clearing the tray. She waited
[12:18] Speaker 1: until Colins had gone before she spoke up, hovering by
[12:21] Speaker 1: the sink with a forehid brow. What was that, she
[12:26] Speaker 1: asked quieter. Now, I've never seen a tooth come apart
[12:30] Speaker 1: like that. Neither have I, I said. She rinsed the
[12:36] Speaker 1: instrument slower than usual. Like she was waiting for me
[12:40] Speaker 1: to come up with an answer. It looked, I dunno,
[12:46] Speaker 1: like it had rotted from the inside out. She said,
[12:49] Speaker 1: the scaler down a little harder than necessary. Not decay though,
[12:54] Speaker 1: was it? No? I said, not decay. She gave a
[13:01] Speaker 1: short shake of her head, almost to herself. Weird one.
[13:08] Speaker 1: Kelly wasn't one to push, but I could feel her
[13:11] Speaker 1: watching as I rolled my chair back to the computer,
[13:15] Speaker 1: waiting for me to tell her it was nothing, or
[13:18] Speaker 1: that I'd seen worse, or that I knew exactly what
[13:21] Speaker 1: had caused it. When she realized I didn't have an answer,
[13:26] Speaker 1: she left to go on a break. With a bit
[13:30] Speaker 1: of down time before my next patient, I opened up
[13:34] Speaker 1: my inbox. Claire's emails were still sitting there, flagged in bold.
[13:39] Speaker 1: I clicked open the first one. Hey, Dad, I got
[13:43] Speaker 1: around to using the stuff you sent. Figured you'd find
[13:46] Speaker 1: this funny. I propped up a standing mirror on the
[13:49] Speaker 1: kitchen table, wedged the torch between two cookbooks, and angry
[13:53] Speaker 1: everything just right so I could see what I was
[13:55] Speaker 1: doing looked ridiculous. Crouched over my own reflection with a
[13:59] Speaker 1: filling kit in one hand and a dental probab in
[14:02] Speaker 1: the other I should have taken a picture. You'd either
[14:06] Speaker 1: have died laughing or disowned me on the spot, probably both.
[14:11] Speaker 1: It's not perfect, but it's holding. I'm pretty proud of it,
[14:15] Speaker 1: if I'm honest. Thought you'd be proud too, considering how
[14:19] Speaker 1: he used to cry any time I lost the milk tooth.
[14:22] Speaker 1: When I finally make it back home, you'd better have
[14:25] Speaker 1: a job waiting for me, Love, Claire. I leaned back
[14:32] Speaker 1: in the chair and let myself smile, just for a moment.
[14:37] Speaker 1: Then I clicked open the next email she'd sent earlier.
[14:40] Speaker 1: It wasn't like her sending two so close together. Hey Dad,
[14:46] Speaker 1: hope you're all right. You've been in my mind lately.
[14:50] Speaker 1: I'm starting to think I didn't do the filling properly.
[14:52] Speaker 1: After all. My jaw's been aching for a few days now,
[14:56] Speaker 1: worse than I thought it would be. It's gotten to
[14:59] Speaker 1: the point I can't really chew on that side anymore.
[15:02] Speaker 1: It feels like the whole tooth's about to fall apart
[15:05] Speaker 1: if I press on it too much. I'm pretty sure
[15:08] Speaker 1: that wasn't in the instructions, not that I could have
[15:11] Speaker 1: read them anyway. It's not just uncomfortable anymore. It's painful.
[15:17] Speaker 1: It keeps me up at night. Sometimes. I know I
[15:20] Speaker 1: should get it looked at, but you know me too stubborn,
[15:24] Speaker 1: and if I'm honest, I don't really trust anyone over
[15:27] Speaker 1: here to get it right. It makes me nervous just
[15:30] Speaker 1: thinking about it. Do you think this is normal? Is
[15:34] Speaker 1: this what happens if you mess it up? Or is
[15:37] Speaker 1: it something worse? Let me know when you can, love Claire.
[15:46] Speaker 1: It was in that moment that I became aware of
[15:48] Speaker 1: how hard my jaw was throbbing beneath a molar. I
[15:52] Speaker 1: pressed my tongue against it without thinking, and I felt
[15:56] Speaker 1: it shift to me to the point where I froze,
[16:02] Speaker 1: and I sat very still for a long time, let
[16:05] Speaker 1: the polls drag out, slow and thick through my jaw.
[16:09] Speaker 1: Then energy surged through me, and my fingers moved. Before
[16:13] Speaker 1: I thought about what they were doing, I pulled up records,
[16:17] Speaker 1: checking dates, dragging appointments onto the screen one by one, Collins,
[16:23] Speaker 1: the girl, me, and then Missus Graham the first to
[16:27] Speaker 1: receive one of the new fillings. All of us were
[16:31] Speaker 1: patched from the same shipment of cheaper supplies than knot
[16:36] Speaker 1: in my stomach tightened as I scrolled through the invoices,
[16:39] Speaker 1: the dates lining up too neatly. Every name, every filling,
[16:45] Speaker 1: every order. It sat there in black and white, plain
[16:49] Speaker 1: as anything, every one of them. My jaw thropped harder,
[16:56] Speaker 1: like something was still working its way through bone, slow
[17:01] Speaker 1: chewing its way out. I thought of Missus Graham and
[17:05] Speaker 1: picked up the phone. Pulling over details from the system,
[17:10] Speaker 1: I dialed a number and waited for the tone to connect. Hello,
[17:15] Speaker 1: Missus Graham, it's David from the surgery. Just a quick
[17:19] Speaker 1: call about your recent filling. Nothing to worry about, but
[17:23] Speaker 1: we've started running a new patient care initiative that involves
[17:27] Speaker 1: follow up routines for anyone who's had recent work. Just
[17:30] Speaker 1: making sure everything's settling properly. Oh, she said, sounding a
[17:36] Speaker 1: little apprehensive. No charge, of course, We're just trying to
[17:41] Speaker 1: catch any small issues early before they turn into anything bigger.
[17:46] Speaker 1: That's thoughtful of you. I was actually going to ring.
[17:50] Speaker 1: It's been feeling a bit odd since I left. I'd
[17:54] Speaker 1: like to have another lock, if that's all right. Could
[17:56] Speaker 1: you come in later today. We've got a slot up
[17:59] Speaker 1: when this afternoon. Yes, that's fine. Better to get it checked,
[18:04] Speaker 1: isn't it exactly. We'll see you then. Missus Graham arrived
[18:12] Speaker 1: later that afternoon, right on time. We exchanged the usual
[18:17] Speaker 1: small talk while I settled her into the chair. Nothing
[18:21] Speaker 1: out of the ordinary on the surface. Doesn't quite feel right,
[18:25] Speaker 1: that one, she said, as I adjusted the light. And
[18:29] Speaker 1: that's what we're here to check, I said, giving her
[18:32] Speaker 1: the practiced reassuring smile. I called Kelly in from sterilization.
[18:39] Speaker 1: She slipped on gloves without question and took up a
[18:42] Speaker 1: place at my side. Composite failing again, she asked under
[18:47] Speaker 1: a breath, No, just the follow up, I said. I
[18:53] Speaker 1: numbed the area, waited until I was certain Missus Graham
[18:57] Speaker 1: couldn't feel a thing. Then I worked carefully, easing through
[19:01] Speaker 1: the surface of the filling. It crumbled under the bur
[19:05] Speaker 1: in soft, unexpected flakes. Beneath it, the dentin looked pale,
[19:12] Speaker 1: almost pourus hollow in places. Kelly shifted beside me, leaning
[19:18] Speaker 1: in to watch. Looks the same as Collins, she said,
[19:23] Speaker 1: keeping a voice level. I irrigated the cavity as she
[19:28] Speaker 1: suged and cleared the debris. As I leaned closer with
[19:32] Speaker 1: the mirror, something small and pale. It was moving. Kelly
[19:40] Speaker 1: I said, quietly, pass me the explorer. She did without comment,
[19:47] Speaker 1: though I felt a breath hitch as she saw it too.
[19:52] Speaker 1: I nudged the lava free. It was tiny, embedded right
[19:57] Speaker 1: where the pulp should have been. Kelly's widened eyes flicked
[20:01] Speaker 1: between me and the thing writhing faintly on the tip
[20:05] Speaker 1: of my tool. She kept her composure barely. Missus Graham
[20:11] Speaker 1: still had her eyes closed, blissfully unaware. Get the container,
[20:17] Speaker 1: I said, steady as I could manage now. I've never
[20:22] Speaker 1: seen anything like that, she whispered as she passed it over.
[20:28] Speaker 1: Neither of ee, I said, placing the lava inside with
[20:32] Speaker 1: careful precision, snapping the lid shut before I could shift again.
[20:37] Speaker 1: We both sat there for a moment longer than necessary,
[20:40] Speaker 1: watching it curl and flicks against the plastic. Kelly's gloves
[20:45] Speaker 1: creaked faintly as she tightened the grip on the edge
[20:48] Speaker 1: of the tray, as if bracing herself against the reality
[20:52] Speaker 1: of what we just found. My tongue pressed instinctively against
[20:57] Speaker 1: my own molar. I felt it again, the faint shift
[21:02] Speaker 1: beneath the enamel. The realization settled hard in my chest. Collins,
[21:07] Speaker 1: the little girl, Missus Graham, Claire me. I swallowed hard,
[21:14] Speaker 1: tasting the metallic tang of fear crawling up from the
[21:17] Speaker 1: back of my throat. Kelly remained speechless, ignorant to the
[21:22] Speaker 1: real reason the lava was there. I need you to
[21:26] Speaker 1: head over to Marston's, I said, quietly, leaning in close
[21:30] Speaker 1: enough that Missus Graham wouldn't overhear. See if they'll sell
[21:34] Speaker 1: you a filling pack. Say it's for a rush case.
[21:37] Speaker 1: Do whatever you have to. Kelly blinked at me, confused.
[21:43] Speaker 1: We've got more in the vault plenty. I don't want
[21:47] Speaker 1: what's in the vault, I said, just trust me on this,
[21:51] Speaker 1: go beg if needed. Missus Graham shifted slightly in the chair,
[21:57] Speaker 1: but kept her eyes closed, still arm still unaware. Kelly hesitated,
[22:04] Speaker 1: then gave a single nod, stripping off her gloves as
[22:07] Speaker 1: she left. She returned five minutes later with a fresh
[22:11] Speaker 1: kit in hand, looking relieved and a little flushed. They
[22:16] Speaker 1: didn't ask questions, just happy to take the money, she said,
[22:21] Speaker 1: didn't even check what I needed it for good, I said,
[22:25] Speaker 1: I'd to get a patch stop. We worked quickly and
[22:30] Speaker 1: cleanly with the new materials. The tooth was lined, filled
[22:35] Speaker 1: and polished to a shine. Missus Graham sat up, feeling
[22:39] Speaker 1: better than she had when she walked in, and thanked
[22:43] Speaker 1: us both politely. Feels loads better already. She said it
[22:49] Speaker 1: was worth coming back in. I smiled and sent her
[22:54] Speaker 1: on away. When the doors shut behind her, Kelly turned
[22:58] Speaker 1: back to me. All right, she said, what the hell
[23:03] Speaker 1: is going on? I opened my mouth to answer, but
[23:10] Speaker 1: I struggled to find where to start. It was in
[23:14] Speaker 1: that moment that I felt a snap in my mouth.
[23:18] Speaker 1: It was sharp and sudden, like a tooth was splintering.
[23:22] Speaker 1: Kelly's expression shifted from confusion to horror. As I lurged
[23:27] Speaker 1: forward over the tray. My hand climbed to my jaw
[23:30] Speaker 1: like I could hold it in place. Stop it somehow,
[23:34] Speaker 1: Open your mouth, Kelly demanded. I obeyed, prying my jaw
[23:39] Speaker 1: apart through the pane. Kelly angled the light, leaning closer,
[23:45] Speaker 1: and then recoiled momentarily. Her breath hitched sharply, gloves trembling
[23:51] Speaker 1: as she adjusted the mirror. Oh my god, she said,
[23:56] Speaker 1: not calm any more. It's moving. I can see it.
[24:01] Speaker 1: It's chewed through. It's bigger. I let out a horrified groan,
[24:06] Speaker 1: jaws straining open while the hands were still in there,
[24:10] Speaker 1: I couldn't speak. All I could do was make that
[24:14] Speaker 1: awful sound as the pain sharpened. Hold still, she snapped.
[24:21] Speaker 1: I felt the gnawing scrape inside the tooth, the way
[24:24] Speaker 1: the enamel fractured inward as something forced its way out.
[24:29] Speaker 1: The pain bloomed hot and raw beneath the gum. Before
[24:33] Speaker 1: I could brace for it, I felt it push and
[24:37] Speaker 1: a crack as it forced its way out through the enamel.
[24:42] Speaker 1: Pain blared sharply and deep through my jaw, worse than
[24:46] Speaker 1: any abscess I'd ever treated. Kelly grabbed the explorer, and,
[24:51] Speaker 1: without waiting for me to flinch, hooked it in and pulled.
[24:56] Speaker 1: I felt the pressure ease in a rush of warmth
[24:58] Speaker 1: and blood. Something white, wet and writhing slipped free under
[25:04] Speaker 1: the tray with a soft, awful sound. We both stared
[25:09] Speaker 1: at it. There was another lava, bigger, this time slick
[25:14] Speaker 1: with blood and pulp. Kelly looked at me, wide eyed,
[25:20] Speaker 1: her face blanching beneath a harsh surgery light. Geez, oh God,
[25:28] Speaker 1: she said, breath catching sharply. What the hell have we
[25:32] Speaker 1: been pulling into people's mouths? I couldn't answer. I turned away.
[25:38] Speaker 1: Half stumbling to the sink and threw up. When I
[25:42] Speaker 1: finally came back for air, Kelly was still staring at
[25:46] Speaker 1: the tray, pale and silent. I wiped my mouth, my
[25:51] Speaker 1: hands shaking, and crossed back to the computer. I poled
[25:55] Speaker 1: up the website where it placed the order Refresh, Refresh again,
[26:01] Speaker 1: nothing eer screen page not found. I checked the invoice
[26:06] Speaker 1: and grabbed the box from the bin. A phone number
[26:09] Speaker 1: was printed in small, pale type beneath the logo. I
[26:14] Speaker 1: dialed it. The line rang once twice, then a dull,
[26:19] Speaker 1: automated voice cut through. The number you have dialed has
[26:23] Speaker 1: not been recognized. Please check and try again. I tried
[26:29] Speaker 1: twice more, same message, same dead tone. I sat back,
[26:35] Speaker 1: staring at the box, the screen, the number, as if
[26:39] Speaker 1: something would change if I looked long enough. There was
[26:43] Speaker 1: no trail left to follow. How did they even get listed?
[26:48] Speaker 1: How did they pass themselves off as legitimate? The package
[26:52] Speaker 1: had looked cheap, yes, but not dangerous. There had been
[26:56] Speaker 1: no warnings, no red flags, no reason to question it
[27:00] Speaker 1: beyond the usual distrust that came with buying cheap. They
[27:04] Speaker 1: sent extras, They'd been polite, efficient, and now nothing. Half
[27:14] Speaker 1: the world away using the same kit, I'd scent Claire's
[27:18] Speaker 1: jaw hurt with one of those things inside of her teeth,
[27:23] Speaker 1: eating away at the enamel from the inside out. I
[27:27] Speaker 1: pressed my fingers hard against my temples and felt the
[27:31] Speaker 1: pulse through my jaw, and in that moment I felt
[27:37] Speaker 1: utterly helpless.
