## Transcript

[0:23] Hi, everyone, and welcome to today's Chinese part lesson.
[0:25] I'm Joe. In today's class, we are going
[0:32] to shop for bags. How do we say bag in Chinese?
[0:38] And if you look at this character, Bao, you see it looks
[0:41] like something is rolled up already or something is wrapped
[0:44] up. And that's the original meaning
[0:46] of this character. And you'll find this character
[0:48] in any form of bag. So what kind of bags could you
[0:51] think of? Oh yeah, the backpack.
[0:57] What else do we have? Xiaolong Bao.
[1:01] That's a steamed dumpling is is that a bag?
[1:08] OK, so because there's in the dumpling, there's still things
[1:12] the meat filling wrapped up inside, you can still refer to
[1:15] it as Bao or the character Bao here is still used.
[1:18] So you'll find this character and anything that is related to
[1:20] being wrapped up. So let's check out what kind of
[1:23] wrapped up things we are going. To.
[1:39] Buy Now. You're my juga ball Haishu, not
[1:53] a. Juga hai yo not a hai.
[2:11] Yo my juga ball Haishu, not a. Hai yo not a Hai yo not a.
[2:21] After. Listening to the dialogue, let's
[2:29] look at it line by line. You're my juga ball, Haishi, not
[2:35] a. Do you want to buy this bag or
[2:38] that bag? You're my juga ball, Haishi, not
[2:44] a. Do you want to buy this bag or
[2:47] that bag? Yo my juga ball Haishi, not a
[2:54] juga Hai Yo not a hai yo not a. This one and that one and also
[3:04] that one. Juga hai yo not a Hai yo not a.
[3:13] This one and that one and also that one.
[3:17] Juga hi yo nag hi yo nag haba. OK, then let's pick it all up.
[3:32] Haba. OK, let's pick it all up.
[3:38] Haba. In our dialogue, we have a
[3:44] couple or some friends that go shopping for bags and it starts
[3:47] with the question, do you want to buy this bag or that bag?
[3:51] You're my juga ball, Haishi, not a.
[3:55] So here we find our word for bag again.
[3:58] Ball. And then we have this bag.
[4:01] Juga. Ball and that bag.
[4:04] Not a Ball. Notice here that in the second
[4:07] one, Nagabao, we leave out the back part because if it's clear
[4:12] from the content in Chinese, we often can leave things out OK,
[4:15] and in between those two bags we have another word, which is or.
[4:20] Hai Shu hai Shu. So if you look at this in more
[4:26] detail, you have the word for still here.
[4:30] Hai. So high can mean still or in
[4:33] addition, and then it's paired here together with the word for
[4:36] to be. Shoe.
[4:38] And together this makes kind of a thing like there is still
[4:42] another option. So this makes it to or.
[4:45] So then we have. High shoe.
[4:48] And together it becomes this bag or that one.
[4:56] In front of the structure you have two other words that are
[4:59] together, and the first is the verb to want.
[5:02] Yo. And then this is paired with the
[5:04] verb to buy. My.
[5:07] So together this becomes want to buy?
[5:09] Yo my. Notice here that there's no
[5:12] subject here either, because it's clear that those people
[5:15] talk to each other. So you don't necessarily need
[5:17] the subjects in these sentences. OK.
[5:19] If we look at the next line, we have another word here that is
[5:23] made-up from the word still. Hi y'all.
[5:28] Hi y'all. So here again we have the word
[5:32] still or in addition, and this time it is paired up together
[5:35] with the verb to have. Yo.
[5:38] And this is used for enumerations and it's normally
[5:41] translated into end or end also. So when you want to list some
[5:45] things that you want or have or simply an enumeration, OK.
[5:50] And the guy here is very decisive in what he wants, and
[5:53] he's immediately like this one and that one and also that one.
[5:58] Juga hi yo not a. Hi yo not a.
[6:05] Let's practice the difference between these two words in a
[6:07] short situation. So let's imagine we are on a
[6:10] plane and Lynn now is our flight attendant and the meal service
[6:14] starts and I'm asking you, MMM, what kind of drinks do you have?
[6:20] Wu men yo xuebi hai yo kuru NI yo xuebi haishi kuru.
[6:30] Kuru. How?
[6:32] Shishi. And then she says, let's pack
[6:38] it. All up.
[6:41] So here you find the word for all all together and this is
[6:45] followed then by a three word combination that has the word to
[6:48] wrap inside again. OK, so we have to wrap and then
[6:57] followed by two other words. These two other words together
[7:01] refer to some kind of upward motion.
[7:03] Because if you look at it more in detail, there is the
[7:05] character for two rise inside and then the character for calm.
[7:12] So together it's like, yeah, this calm and rise and upward
[7:15] motion. Xilai.
[7:18] And here we have it together with two wraps.
[7:20] So why is that an upward motion? Probably because you can imagine
[7:23] if you pick something up, you have to wrap it and you like tie
[7:25] it up on top. So it's.
[7:28] Bo Bo Xilai. Lin, What other words do we have
[7:33] that can be combined with this upward motion in Chinese?
[7:37] Chen Xilai, or. To stand up.
[7:41] Na chilai. Na is to take something.
[7:45] Oh yeah, to pick something up. Do chilai.
[7:49] You often hear this I think with your hands like in class show.
[7:55] Do chilai. Or you can just generally lift
[7:58] things that would be the same. And in our example it was.
[8:02] OK, let's wrap it all up. Haba doba chilaba.
[8:08] And if you wonder, OK, there are now two different bars or there
[8:11] are two bars, what do they mean? So we set the first together
[8:14] with how bar is this? Like you are unwilling maybe a
[8:19] little bit to do something or you don't have a choice.
[8:21] And I go OK, whatever, maybe even.
[8:26] How bar? And then second bar is actually
[8:29] to make a suggestion. We all normally use this
[8:31] particle to make suggestions. So together with this feeling of
[8:35] unwillingness, is this like, OK, well, yeah, then just let's just
[8:40] wrap it up. But of course, you can use this
[8:43] bar to make some more positive suggestions or suggestions in
[8:47] general. So, for example, let's go back
[8:49] to the dialogue again. Greetings everyone and welcome
[8:55] to Chinese Bar Trivia. Our first question is how long
[9:03] will it take you to become an intermediate tiny speaker using
[9:06] the Chinese Pod app? Is it A the rest of your life B
[9:10] you should already be an intermediate speaker?

[10:00] Yeah, my juga ball Hashu, not a. Juga heyo not a.
[10:07] Heyo, not a. You're my juga ball Haishu, not
[10:23] a. Juga hayo not a.
[10:27] Hayo, not a. In today's class we went
[10:36] shopping and you have learned how to give somebody different
[10:39] alternatives. Juga haishu, not a.
[10:44] This or that and you have learned how to list some things
[10:48] that you want to have or that you also have.
[10:51] So we have learned this word end or end also.
[10:54] Hi y'all. And we have focused a little bit
[10:57] more on the word to wrap something.
[11:00] So here we had the word to wrap something up as well.
[11:05] So we are wrapping this class up for now.
