## Transcript

[0:23] I'm Mary. Welcome to Chinese Pod, and I'm
[0:28] Charlie. Oh wait, I'm going to use my
[0:31] suspenseful voice. Today's lesson is based on a
[0:35] conversation between two strangers.
[0:38] The story unravels when one stranger arrives at the
[0:41] doorstep. A mysterious stranger I.
[0:44] Think what Charlie is trying to say here is that today's
[0:47] dialogue is about a woman receiving a package because
[0:50] nowadays people buy a lot of things on the Internet.
[0:54] So we're going to teach you about a dialogue, how to say
[0:58] some words about receiving a package.
[1:01] So please look out for these following words like White
[1:05] Gordon A. Foreigner.
[1:07] Quite thee. Delivery.
[1:10] That's right. So let's take a look at the
[1:12] dialogue now. Now that we've finished
[2:10] listening to the dialogue, let's break it all down line by line.
[2:15] Yo Renna. Is anybody there?
[2:19] Yo Renna. Is anybody there?
[2:23] Yo renna shishaya. Who is it?
[2:29] Shishaya. Who is that?
[2:33] Shishaya Quaidi JA Y Gordon. Delivery Looking for a
[2:42] foreigner? Quaidi Zhao Y Goran.
[2:47] Delivery Looking for a foreigner?
[2:50] Heidi Zhao Y Goran Zhou Shuwa. That's me.
[2:57] Zhou Shuwa. That would be me.
[3:01] Zhou Shuwa. Such a suspenseful story.
[3:06] Don't. You it.
[3:06] Is all right, but let's back that up and take a look at the
[3:10] first sentence that the delivery guy says.
[3:12] Sure. So the first sentence is Yo
[3:15] Rama, yo Rama all. Right, we got 3 words.
[3:20] Let's chop them up and look at each word's individual meaning.
[3:23] OK, so the first word is yo your.
[3:29] That would be. There is.
[3:31] Or to have OK and the second word is Ren, that means people.
[3:39] And right now that we we've got. We've got Yo Ren.
[3:43] That means there are people. There is a person, but we've got
[3:48] a third word, which is ma. That's just simply an an ending
[3:54] particle that transformed the whole statement into a.
[3:57] Question. So now it becomes.
[4:00] Yo Ren Ma. Is there anybody or?
[4:04] Or is anyone home? Yeah, in the context, is there
[4:07] anybody home? That's right.
[4:09] OK. So I think we did a quite great
[4:12] job. I think people don't have
[4:14] questions. Right, no questions.
[4:15] But just to make sure, let's just ask, OK, is there?
[4:18] Yo, when Tima? Is there any questions?
[4:22] Is there a question? No.
[4:24] No. 321 Great. Wait, wait.
[4:33] Are you OK, Charlie? Actually, I don't.
[4:35] I don't feel too good. Oh, did you eat something funny
[4:38] at lunch? Yeah.
[4:39] Like spicy stuff, My stomach doesn't really no take spicy
[4:43] stuff so well. So is there a a bathroom or a
[4:46] toilet? Yoshi Shojima.
[4:49] I don't need you to translate like.
[4:51] Where is that like? OK, it's over there.
[4:53] OK, OK. Wait, wait, what's wrong?
[4:56] Is there any toilet paper? Oh yo Wei Shen Chuma.
[5:01] Well, I don't have any. I think I feel better now.
[5:05] Really. Yep.
[5:05] So let's, let's keep, let's keep teaching.
[5:07] Yeah. So the first question was, is
[5:11] anybody home? So what does the home owner say
[5:15] to to to? Respond OK, so she says
[5:18] shushaya, Shushaya. Another three word combo, I say.
[5:23] That's right, same thing. Let's chop them up.
[5:25] OK, so the first word is Shu she.
[5:30] That means there is. All right, second word.
[5:33] Shea, Shea. Who That's a simple question
[5:37] word for who. And so right there we've got is
[5:41] who? And so I was like, who is it?
[5:44] But what about the third word? Ah ah, so it's ah and not like.
[5:51] Ah, no, don't do that. You will scare people, she'll
[5:53] say. Ah.
[5:54] No. That's not a question or a
[5:57] statement. I guess this is another ending
[5:59] particle that's just there to show the listener that I'm
[6:04] really eager to find out more about the question.
[6:08] So I mean without it, it still works.
[6:10] Though, right, it still works. Thanks.
[6:12] It's like sushi. How does that sound?
[6:15] Sushi. It sounds a little bit rude when
[6:18] you say that. It sounds like sushi.
[6:20] Yeah, A. Little direct, right?
[6:21] But with the AH. With the ah sushi ah, so it
[6:25] sounds more politely. Yeah, I think so.
[6:28] Very good. Wait, Charlie Shushaya want to?
[6:33] Meet up she she want the Mama. Really.
[6:39] Yeah, you can. There you go.
[6:44] What? Hey, somebody's at the door.
[6:46] Shushaya. Yeah, who is?
[6:48] It's OK. I think Joey just took care of.
[6:50] That really? Yeah.
[6:52] So back-to-back to the dialogue, it's it's like, who is it,
[6:58] right? So how does the guy at the door
[7:00] answer? Oh, so he answers.
[7:03] Quiet Dee. Quiet Dee.
[7:07] I know the first word. Quiet means fast, right?
[7:11] That's right. Quickly, Fast.
[7:13] That's quiet. Yep, but the second word.
[7:16] Dee Dee, it means to hand something over to another
[7:21] person. So together, Kwai D means
[7:25] delivery, yeah. That's like the noun delivery.
[7:28] That's right. And right after that, he says.
[7:30] Oh, he says. JA.
[7:33] Why Gordon, JA. OK, forget the end part, just
[7:38] that JAL and that means to look for.
[7:41] That's right. To find something.
[7:47] Oh, Oh, no, Charlie Xiao Shen Ma, it's.
[7:52] All with the showbill. It's right over there here.
[7:56] All right, a watch is obviously on on my hand.
[8:00] Yeah, well, I'm looking for my watch, but what about back to
[8:06] the sentence? Oh, so the delivery guy?
[8:09] He's looking for a foreigner? JA Why Gordon?
[8:14] OK. I think there's a story behind
[8:16] that. It's just to help that can help
[8:18] us memorize the word for foreigner.
[8:20] That's right. So let's break it down.
[8:22] The first word why? Why it means outside OK?
[8:27] We've got outside, OK. And the second word is cool.
[8:31] Cool. It means country, so.
[8:33] We've got outside country. That's right.
[8:35] And the third one is run, run. It means people.
[8:41] So it's pretty obvious. Why Guo Ren?
[8:46] It means foreigners. All right, so, but this, this
[8:50] part, the whole part here is what I really want to talk
[8:52] about. Because the delivery guy, yeah,
[8:55] like he, he, he has a package or something, right.
[8:57] And on the package there's bound to be a name.
[9:00] It. Is but he chooses to address the
[9:04] the person from inside the house.
[9:05] Hey I'm looking for a foreigner. Isn't that a bit rude or even
[9:08] like? Well, actually it might be
[9:11] because that he doesn't read English, so he don't he doesn't
[9:15] know how to pronounce the name. Fair enough, but but then again,
[9:19] like some some English names there, they have like directly
[9:23] translated Chinese characters there.
[9:25] Right. You try.
[9:26] All right, it's Gabriella, right.
[9:29] So so he he could be. Oh, I'm looking for what's all.
[9:34] See, you can't read it, so give him a break.
[9:38] I I get it right? Finally, so it's actually not
[9:40] rude. OK, well, well the delivery guy
[9:44] he's looking for a foreigner. So this non foreigner delivery
[9:48] guy is looking for a foreigner. How does?
[9:51] OK, reply, the girl replies and. The third word is simple enough.
[10:01] It means, but what I really want to know is the difference
[10:05] between Joshua or just like you know, Joshua.
[10:09] Oh, OK, So when we say sure, Shu wah, it means it's me.
[10:16] But when you say Jo Shu wah, it means a little bit like the one
[10:22] you're looking for. That's me.
[10:24] It would be me. Oh, OK.
[10:26] So it's pretty much the same. It doesn't change the meaning.
[10:29] It's very close. Yeah.
[10:30] But the listener would, would, would get the feeling that
[10:32] someone's calling out my name and.
[10:35] And I'm really eager to provide an answer.
[10:37] Like it's obviously that's me, but there's no negativity.
[10:40] Like no. Sarcastic.
[10:41] Not at all. That that would be me.
[10:43] Thing right? So for example, when I ask this
[10:45] question, well, who is the most handsome guy in the office?
[10:52] Joshua Wah. Joshua Wah.
[10:57] Not, not, not not what, but. I'm explaining OK, OK.
[11:03] OK, now let's go back to the dialogue and listen to
[11:05] everything again. Greetings everyone and welcome
