Five years ago, in mid 2021, Questlove Supreme sat down with three members of The Jacksons, THE American Music Dynasty. In the spirit of Black Music Month, Ahmir's quote: "we would be pressed to find one person on this earth who has not been affected by their legacy" echoes powerfully. Jackie, Marlon, and the since-passed Tito discussed their 50-year musical legacy, the remastering of their classic albums, and their transition from Motown to Epic Records on QLS. The two-hour episode was recorded on Zoom, but the conversation is preserved as an evergreen look into the musical family that continues to shape music and culture. [1:57] Speaker 2: The the first lady of the show her. How are
[2:00] Speaker 2: you right now?
[2:01] Speaker 4: You feel?
[2:03] Speaker 8: I don't care. We got a paperwork? Can you feel
[2:04] Speaker 8: it yet?
[2:06] Speaker 4: Can feel it?
[2:09] Speaker 2: Anyway, Ladies and gentlemen, I will just say that we're
[2:13] Speaker 2: given the honor right now of having a conversation with
[2:19] Speaker 2: an American I guess I can say an American institution, Yes,
[2:24] Speaker 2: an American dynasty. For over damn near six decades, our
[2:29] Speaker 2: guests have blazed a trail of hit records, have sold
[2:34] Speaker 2: out concerts of Disney and choreography of ground baking videos.
[2:39] Speaker 1: Basically, I'll be pressed to.
[2:40] Speaker 2: Find one human being on earth who's not, in one way,
[2:44] Speaker 2: shape or form, been affected by their legacy. And it's
[2:48] Speaker 2: apropos that they're on the show now, their entire sony
[2:50] Speaker 2: catalog has just caught up with their motown catalog, and
[2:55] Speaker 2: that they're self titled seventy six album seventy seven is
[2:59] Speaker 2: going place and Destiny from seventy eight have finally, after
[3:03] Speaker 2: all these decades, gotten the remastered treatment finally on streaming platforms,
[3:09] Speaker 2: and you know, basically words I'd never thought i'd say
[3:12] Speaker 2: in this lifetime. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to Quest
[3:16] Speaker 2: Left Supreme the Jacksons.
[3:18] Speaker 1: Yes question, Well, thanks, all right.
[3:27] Speaker 2: So you know slight disclosure, were cheated already by talking
[3:32] Speaker 2: to Tito.
[3:34] Speaker 1: Actually, what our second episode? Correct?
[3:38] Speaker 2: Since since we've been the iHeart right our second episode,
[3:40] Speaker 2: so this might be rerun city, but I you know,
[3:45] Speaker 2: figure i'd figure out creative ways to ask these questions.
[3:50] Speaker 2: I guess my first question off the bat is if
[3:54] Speaker 2: one says twenty three hundred Jackson Street, what is your
[3:58] Speaker 2: first immediate memory that comes to mind automatically?
[4:01] Speaker 9: Well, I'm gonna this is morning, so I'm gonna jump
[4:03] Speaker 9: in first. Since I'm the youngest out of the out
[4:05] Speaker 9: of the three here, it should be this should be
[4:08] Speaker 9: the last one, No, brother, not in these days? Yes, Uh,
[4:19] Speaker 9: that house on twenty three hundred Jackson Street. That our
[4:22] Speaker 9: house in Gary, Indiana. The first thing that pops in
[4:25] Speaker 9: mind to me that that huge house when I was young,
[4:29] Speaker 9: and when I go back to visit that little house
[4:32] Speaker 9: that we all grew.
[4:33] Speaker 10: Up in and we all practice.
[4:35] Speaker 9: That's where we got our start from, from that house
[4:37] Speaker 9: on the corner of twenty three hundred Jackson Street.
[4:41] Speaker 2: So you're saying that as a young as a youngster,
[4:44] Speaker 2: you thought that that was an average sized house.
[4:48] Speaker 10: No, that was a mansion when we were young.
[4:51] Speaker 9: Wow, Yes, it sure was. We did everything in that house,
[4:57] Speaker 9: played hide and seek and rehearse U. We put to
[5:00] Speaker 9: pull the furniture back and my father would.
[5:03] Speaker 10: Rehearse us in the living room.
[5:04] Speaker 9: It was only a two bedroom house with eleven people,
[5:09] Speaker 9: but we managed to make it work.
[5:11] Speaker 4: Marlin's garage is bigger than that house.
[5:13] Speaker 2: Right now, Jackie, what do you what are your memories
[5:18] Speaker 2: of twenty three hundred Jackson Street.
[5:20] Speaker 11: Well, like Marlon said, you know, it's a place where
[5:22] Speaker 11: we all grew up in the house and a lot
[5:24] Speaker 11: of fun memories there. Loving parents and we love each other.
[5:29] Speaker 11: We were bonded together. We had a two bedroom house
[5:33] Speaker 11: and uh and I remember, you know in our bedroom
[5:36] Speaker 11: we had like bump beds that were stacked up together
[5:39] Speaker 11: like fis.
[5:40] Speaker 10: Like the three stooges.
[5:41] Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, yeah, and my sisters, my sisters, they all
[5:46] Speaker 11: slept in the living room. There was a count's bed
[5:49] Speaker 11: that let out, and my mother and father slept in
[5:51] Speaker 11: the other bedroom. But there was a lot of love,
[5:53] Speaker 11: with a lot of rehearsing in that house.
[5:55] Speaker 4: We bonded together.
[5:56] Speaker 11: And there was a lot of small concerts in that
[5:58] Speaker 11: house because we had already as people coming from the
[6:01] Speaker 11: neighborhood speaking in the windows is watching us rehearse every
[6:04] Speaker 11: single day and we and uh, that was pretty much
[6:07] Speaker 11: our audience. And that's uh, there's a lot of fun memories.
[6:11] Speaker 1: It was just an open door policy, like one could
[6:13] Speaker 1: just it just come up to the window. Oh, just
[6:16] Speaker 1: come to the window, not walk inside the house.
[6:18] Speaker 9: And no, no, you can walk inside the route.
[6:22] Speaker 10: They will fight to get the best position.
[6:24] Speaker 9: In the window to look we were doing.
[6:27] Speaker 2: Yeah usually and they're watching these rehearsals. Then how how
[6:33] Speaker 2: long would these rehearsals last?
[6:34] Speaker 1: For a couple of hours?
[6:37] Speaker 11: Yeah, two hours at least, yeah, sometime three, you know,
[6:42] Speaker 11: so we get it right, we take a break and
[6:44] Speaker 11: take a fifteen minute break and go back.
[6:45] Speaker 12: At it, you know, Okay, because most of the time
[6:49] Speaker 12: we had rehearsals prior to doing the gig, because we
[6:52] Speaker 12: would gig on the weekdays after school. We're rehearsed and
[6:57] Speaker 12: go to that gig about seven o'clock in the evening
[7:00] Speaker 12: in Chicago, what have you?
[7:03] Speaker 1: Oh?
[7:04] Speaker 9: Then be back, get back home somewhere around one to
[7:06] Speaker 9: two in the morning, get up and go to school.
[7:09] Speaker 9: Which I did not mind because when we were when
[7:12] Speaker 9: we played shows in Chicago, people would throw money on stage,
[7:15] Speaker 9: and so Michael and I, you know, we're doing splits
[7:18] Speaker 9: left and right, and we get to keep the money.
[7:21] Speaker 10: Shoot.
[7:22] Speaker 9: So when I lent to school, we used to stop
[7:25] Speaker 9: at the store and get the pocket full of candy,
[7:28] Speaker 9: then go to class. So Michael and I, we always
[7:30] Speaker 9: had money.
[7:33] Speaker 1: In the second grade. Okay, had a dollar. I wanted
[7:42] Speaker 1: to know, I five.
[7:43] Speaker 9: Penny, Tino, you got five for a penny back in
[7:45] Speaker 9: those days.
[7:46] Speaker 2: Okay, I know that you guys were an official five
[7:50] Speaker 2: some uh what sixty five? But back when the group
[7:54] Speaker 2: was just a trio, back when it's just Jackie, Tito
[7:58] Speaker 2: and Jermaine and what was the what was the arrangement
[8:04] Speaker 2: of the group then before Marlon and Michael came along.
[8:06] Speaker 12: Like well, we were just basically a bedroom group. We
[8:10] Speaker 12: hadn't done anything out in the public or anything like that.
[8:15] Speaker 12: We were just three brothers trying to be the brothers Temptations,
[8:20] Speaker 12: trying to figure it out, trying to figure it out,
[8:22] Speaker 12: trying trying to figure it out. How did temptation sound
[8:26] Speaker 12: like this or the Miracles or whoever. We were just
[8:30] Speaker 12: putting to get you know, getting it together.
[8:33] Speaker 2: But in a trio situation, who was the lead person?
[8:36] Speaker 2: Who was the in that particular situation.
[8:40] Speaker 11: At that time, Jermaine was singing a lot of leads. First,
[8:42] Speaker 11: we were all singing at that time too. But uh,
[8:45] Speaker 11: later on then Michael and Marlin joined and Michael came
[8:49] Speaker 11: in playing you know the Quaker oat mill boxes.
[8:54] Speaker 13: Oh wow, he called to playing.
[8:56] Speaker 11: The bungos on that Michael did, and uh he has
[8:59] Speaker 11: some with him and Marland had so much dancing ability
[9:03] Speaker 11: and energy.
[9:03] Speaker 4: So we decided, hey man, we got to put them
[9:05] Speaker 4: in the group, you know.
[9:07] Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, So.
[9:08] Speaker 11: That's how that started, you know, And so we shot
[9:12] Speaker 11: them in the group, and then we started doing all
[9:14] Speaker 11: these talent shows, you know, all these talent shows. In
[9:17] Speaker 11: time for my high school. We had a lot of
[9:19] Speaker 11: talent shows going on. We would join these talent shows
[9:23] Speaker 11: rehearsing for the talent shows, and we would win these
[9:25] Speaker 11: talent shows all all over the regional part of the state,
[9:30] Speaker 11: you know of Indiana. We go to Michigan, different places
[9:35] Speaker 11: like that, and uh and just win all these talent shows.
[9:38] Speaker 11: And on these shows there was Denise Williams when the
[9:40] Speaker 11: fires on some of these shows, and you know, these
[9:43] Speaker 11: talent shows like that.
[9:44] Speaker 2: You know, I was going to say, yeah, one one
[9:46] Speaker 2: of the Hutchinson of the Emotions. Yeah, and Sheila I
[9:51] Speaker 2: believe as well, told us that they would often run
[9:54] Speaker 2: into you guys doing.
[9:57] Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, we did.
[9:59] Speaker 9: We did what they called the chilling circuit. And actually
[10:03] Speaker 9: not only them, the O Jay's, it was the Shylights
[10:07] Speaker 9: and us and and like you said, the Emotions. And
[10:11] Speaker 9: we used to do a place in Chicago called the
[10:13] Speaker 9: High Chaparral and Maurice White was with another band and
[10:17] Speaker 9: they would play.
[10:18] Speaker 4: It was the drummer was the drummer Simmons was the
[10:23] Speaker 4: name of that band.
[10:24] Speaker 14: It was Yes then Simmons.
[10:27] Speaker 9: And when we did do those places one time I
[10:30] Speaker 9: remember so well, pig Meat Markham was the main act
[10:33] Speaker 9: and they would have us on the judge yeah. And
[10:39] Speaker 9: when we did the the Apollo, you know amateur stuff
[10:43] Speaker 9: you had Moms Maybley or Edda James where the acts
[10:46] Speaker 9: that came in or Simon Dave were the headliners and
[10:50] Speaker 9: came on Amateur Night and did our thing and people
[10:52] Speaker 9: enjoyed us.
[10:53] Speaker 4: How many shows we used to do?
[10:56] Speaker 9: What seven shows a night or something like seven shows
[10:58] Speaker 9: a day?
[10:59] Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, day?
[11:00] Speaker 1: Really?
[11:01] Speaker 2: So you would do Amateur Night each time around or
[11:04] Speaker 2: was it at some point where you guys were sort
[11:06] Speaker 2: of out of Amateur Night and just a featured act.
[11:09] Speaker 4: Where's Amateur Knight it was?
[11:10] Speaker 9: And then we then we would do the talent shows
[11:13] Speaker 9: and the Five stair Steps.
[11:14] Speaker 15: Uh.
[11:15] Speaker 9: We had a rivalry I guess between us and the
[11:17] Speaker 9: Five Stairsteps.
[11:18] Speaker 4: And Michael would cry.
[11:19] Speaker 11: Michael would cry his butt off because you know, sometime
[11:22] Speaker 11: before that came on before us, you know, the crowd
[11:26] Speaker 11: started throwing eggs at him and stuff. I think they
[11:28] Speaker 11: were there, and Michael would cry, if you forget, they're
[11:30] Speaker 11: gonna do the same thing to him. So we would
[11:32] Speaker 11: try to comments and Mike, just do your thing, Everything's
[11:35] Speaker 11: going to be okay.
[11:36] Speaker 9: You know.
[11:36] Speaker 11: He would cry like a baby because he didn't want
[11:38] Speaker 11: them throwing eggs on him on stead grabbing a hook
[11:41] Speaker 11: and hooking them off stage.
[11:42] Speaker 4: That's what That's what they did.
[11:47] Speaker 1: Sim I was gonna say, I know that.
[11:50] Speaker 2: Well, of course everyone knows the legend of the Apollo,
[11:52] Speaker 2: But for those other spots that were in the chilling circuit,
[11:56] Speaker 2: like either the Regent or the Uptown and Billy or
[12:00] Speaker 2: the Fox and Detroit, was it also the same way,
[12:04] Speaker 2: like if you were new you were someone booing you
[12:09] Speaker 2: off the stage or anything, or.
[12:10] Speaker 1: Was that just the Apollo? Like could you relax if
[12:13] Speaker 1: you if you were at Chicago or any other place?
[12:16] Speaker 14: It was more so as Paula.
[12:18] Speaker 12: But they'll believe if you're not good Regal Theater or
[12:22] Speaker 12: wherever uptown, they're gonna bully you.
[12:25] Speaker 3: You know.
[12:26] Speaker 14: But but people don't play.
[12:28] Speaker 1: You know.
[12:30] Speaker 15: Happened to the Jackson's.
[12:33] Speaker 14: Though, No, no, no, yeah, we never got the boom.
[12:39] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[12:39] Speaker 12: So, uh, we were scared of the book. So we
[12:42] Speaker 12: did the best that we could do. I say, stay
[12:45] Speaker 12: away from that book.
[12:47] Speaker 2: Wait, yes, Tito, the world kind of knows the story
[12:51] Speaker 2: of you discovering your your father's guitar. Uh huh, But
[12:57] Speaker 2: I always wanted to know how was your able to
[13:00] Speaker 2: learn the bass. Was it was it a similar situation
[13:04] Speaker 2: like who taught him how to play the bass?
[13:06] Speaker 12: Well, I gave Jamaine based guitar lessons on the bass,
[13:10] Speaker 12: based notes on the guitar, She'd say, because when my
[13:13] Speaker 12: father bought him the second guitar, he started playing the guitar.
[13:17] Speaker 12: That I was sneaking from my father and I was showing,
[13:22] Speaker 12: you know, the little things on the on the on
[13:25] Speaker 12: the guitar, but it was based up. So he was
[13:28] Speaker 12: playing bass on the guitar because as you know, the
[13:31] Speaker 12: first first yes, same same thing, yeah.
[13:36] Speaker 11: And then what he did he started studying James Jamison
[13:40] Speaker 11: Motown because he listened to Motown songs and he started
[13:43] Speaker 11: studying James Jamison. He was he used to play dislike
[13:47] Speaker 11: him Jamaine as a young kid. He I mean he
[13:49] Speaker 11: had it down, you know, singing and playing at the
[13:51] Speaker 11: same time.
[13:53] Speaker 2: Okay, So before you guys went to Motown, you were
[13:57] Speaker 2: on Steel Town. What was the story Fie Town? Like
[14:00] Speaker 2: who owned the label? How did you guys wind wind
[14:04] Speaker 2: up recording a single for them?
[14:07] Speaker 9: Well, Still Town was just a local record company and
[14:10] Speaker 9: Gary Ander.
[14:12] Speaker 10: We really didn't I.
[14:13] Speaker 9: Guess we were so young we didn't know we didn't
[14:17] Speaker 9: know a lot.
[14:18] Speaker 12: My father is basically who took us and was controlled
[14:22] Speaker 12: all the activities of the little boys at that time
[14:26] Speaker 12: because we were really really young. I remember seeing a
[14:30] Speaker 12: picture of the band recording the song I'm a Big
[14:34] Speaker 12: Boy Now, and we were all quite small, little kids,
[14:38] Speaker 12: you know, and it just happened.
[14:41] Speaker 10: One take and that was it.
[14:43] Speaker 3: I mean, right, it was.
[14:45] Speaker 9: The budget wasn't big, it was nothing. You know. We
[14:49] Speaker 9: could have recorded this song in our in our living room.
[14:52] Speaker 14: In and out, yeah, in and out.
[14:55] Speaker 5: Like you said, you were so young, Like, how did
[14:57] Speaker 5: you look at all the rehearsals and all the shows
[15:00] Speaker 5: and all the and all the things you were doing.
[15:02] Speaker 5: Did you did you think it was the most fun
[15:05] Speaker 5: thing you could do. I mean, I think it is,
[15:08] Speaker 5: But but at the time, did you think that we had.
[15:14] Speaker 14: When they say keepers of the dream, we really had dreams.
[15:17] Speaker 12: We all wanted to be like Jackie Wilson and James
[15:22] Speaker 12: Brown and the Attempts.
[15:23] Speaker 14: We wanted to be entertain the stars.
[15:27] Speaker 16: We wanted to go to Holly, California or wherever the
[15:32] Speaker 16: stars lived and see it was fun too, That's the
[15:37] Speaker 16: main thing.
[15:37] Speaker 14: We had a lot of fun along the journey.
[15:40] Speaker 12: But we never realized what the mark was making in
[15:44] Speaker 12: the world when we were younger, because we were constantly
[15:48] Speaker 12: busy and we would go to different parts of the
[15:52] Speaker 12: world and and uh get back to school and we
[15:56] Speaker 12: could tell the class everything about the place.
[16:00] Speaker 10: Don't don't get us wrong.
[16:01] Speaker 9: There were times that we didn't want to rehearse, trust me,
[16:03] Speaker 9: we'd rather be outside playing. And the kids used to
[16:06] Speaker 9: laugh at us sometimes and tell us you are not
[16:09] Speaker 9: going to get anywhere, and and you know with the rehearsing.
[16:12] Speaker 9: But my father, you know, made sure that we rehearsed
[16:15] Speaker 9: before we did anything rehearse. We used to take breaks
[16:18] Speaker 9: sometime and watch Batman or the Green Hornet, then back
[16:21] Speaker 9: to rehearsal.
[16:22] Speaker 4: You watch the Three Stoodents, that's what.
[16:23] Speaker 9: Oh, yeah, we watched them dog three Stoodents?
[16:26] Speaker 10: Yes, we did.
[16:30] Speaker 5: Did you play any sports in in school?
[16:33] Speaker 11: We played a lot of basketball baseball because the baseball
[16:37] Speaker 11: field was right behind our house and if we weren't
[16:39] Speaker 11: doing music, was playing baseball most of the time. That's
[16:42] Speaker 11: what we did.
[16:43] Speaker 10: Cricket, cricket in the alley, Yes, cricket.
[16:47] Speaker 1: Wait, black people play cricket. Yeah, yeah, that's crazy, right.
[16:52] Speaker 9: Yeah, we played ghetto cricket, but we played its.
[17:00] Speaker 4: Tell how the game goes wrong.
[17:02] Speaker 9: We used to set up like three cans on the
[17:06] Speaker 9: ground at each end, and we had a stick. We
[17:08] Speaker 9: all had sticks to bat. Either you throw at the
[17:12] Speaker 9: can or you roll it and you hit the ball
[17:15] Speaker 9: and you go back and forth counting, and whoever got
[17:18] Speaker 9: to a certain point a certain number one that won
[17:21] Speaker 9: the game. And it gave you skills because Jackie and
[17:25] Speaker 9: Jermaine and they used to try to see if they
[17:27] Speaker 9: can hit it all the way to the other field
[17:29] Speaker 9: over the fence, and they did. And you can imagine
[17:32] Speaker 9: someone running trying to get that ball and throw it back.
[17:35] Speaker 9: And if you stick it up and they knock down
[17:37] Speaker 9: your cans, is that these the other teams turn to
[17:39] Speaker 9: come up and take a back. That's what we did,
[17:46] Speaker 9: outside of moving cylinder bros from one end of the
[17:49] Speaker 9: yard to the other end of the yard. Uh choy
[17:54] Speaker 9: that my father gave us.
[17:56] Speaker 7: Yeah, that's not a sport, yea, yeah.
[18:00] Speaker 1: That's exactly what.
[18:06] Speaker 9: No.
[18:06] Speaker 2: Well, when we saw that on uh the American Dream. Uh,
[18:11] Speaker 2: I guess Jackie had to keep moving the bricks. What
[18:15] Speaker 2: was that like? Just something to keep you occupied for
[18:18] Speaker 2: an hour or so?
[18:18] Speaker 13: Or keep us occupied, keep us, keep us from the
[18:21] Speaker 13: gangs in the streets.
[18:23] Speaker 10: Okay.
[18:24] Speaker 4: And it took all day, It took.
[18:26] Speaker 10: All took all days. It takes no hour. It took
[18:28] Speaker 10: all day.
[18:29] Speaker 9: And Michael and I couldn't pick up one, so the
[18:31] Speaker 9: two of us carried one. And yeah, he would make us.
[18:35] Speaker 9: When I get home from work, I want to see
[18:36] Speaker 9: those bricks from that end of the yard to over
[18:39] Speaker 9: that other in the yard.
[18:41] Speaker 1: Wow.
[18:42] Speaker 2: Okay, So explain to me the environment that was Gary,
[18:45] Speaker 2: Indiana in the mid sixties, Like, what is what is
[18:51] Speaker 2: your father trying to keep you from?
[18:52] Speaker 1: What is that? What is outside of twenty three hundred
[18:55] Speaker 1: Jackson Street.
[18:55] Speaker 9: Well, there were gangs then, lurking to recruit new young members.
[18:59] Speaker 9: And and I guess my father felt that with my
[19:02] Speaker 9: sons would not be a member of those gangs, so
[19:05] Speaker 9: he kept us occupy and and and we did go
[19:09] Speaker 9: out and play sometime in the streets, hide and seek
[19:12] Speaker 9: or whatever. But majority of the times we, uh, we
[19:16] Speaker 9: were working moving those bricks around or rehearsing. But there
[19:21] Speaker 9: were games sometime. And Jackie and Tito can elaborate on
[19:24] Speaker 9: this more. Because I was still in elementary school.
[19:28] Speaker 12: No, No, there was a lot of games around carry
[19:32] Speaker 12: there was they were shooting. You're can be it on
[19:37] Speaker 12: your porch at night because the ladies of the neighborhood,
[19:41] Speaker 12: meaning the mothers, we get together and you know they
[19:44] Speaker 12: mosquitos are bad.
[19:45] Speaker 1: So they have a.
[19:47] Speaker 12: Garbage canned fire going and join the smoke keep it.
[19:52] Speaker 14: And all of a sudden you started hear.
[19:55] Speaker 12: Cars speeding down the street and people started running and
[19:58] Speaker 12: duck and so there was a lot of gang activity.
[20:01] Speaker 11: Right, but the gates, but the games never didn't mess
[20:04] Speaker 11: with us. They always protected us when we walked through
[20:06] Speaker 11: the game.
[20:08] Speaker 9: Yeah you guys, yeah, making some positive noise. I guess
[20:15] Speaker 9: I don't know.
[20:16] Speaker 15: Okay, all right, were you guys first generation Gary, Indiana?
[20:21] Speaker 8: Or were your parents from there as well? I don't remember.
[20:23] Speaker 12: No, no, no, my parents aren't from there, but they
[20:29] Speaker 12: were first generation from Gary.
[20:31] Speaker 8: Yeah, okay, so where were your parents from? I'm just curious.
[20:33] Speaker 9: I never my.
[20:35] Speaker 12: Mother's from from Arkansas, and now my father's from Arkansas.
[20:39] Speaker 14: My mother's from Alabama.
[20:42] Speaker 10: What city she's Abama?
[20:45] Speaker 14: Girl?
[20:46] Speaker 10: You know, I think I don't. I think it's Herbsborough.
[20:50] Speaker 1: Okay, I thought it was a mobile.
[20:53] Speaker 14: Yeah, the Columbus.
[20:54] Speaker 8: Either way, her childhood was but so sweet my.
[20:57] Speaker 14: Father from Little Ross.
[21:01] Speaker 7: Oh oh wow, I read once your that your mom
[21:06] Speaker 7: she was like a country western singer that she used
[21:08] Speaker 7: the sing country.
[21:09] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[21:09] Speaker 11: What happened was with that, you know at that time,
[21:12] Speaker 11: you know, our television broke and we didn't have money
[21:15] Speaker 11: to get it fixed, you know, so we were we
[21:18] Speaker 11: were singing. She was an avid country western fans. She
[21:21] Speaker 11: loved country western music. Yeah yeah, yeah, wow, different people.
[21:26] Speaker 11: And uh, we was harmonized with her singing with her,
[21:29] Speaker 11: you know, and uh because no television were singing with her.
[21:33] Speaker 11: And she came to my father one day said, Joe,
[21:36] Speaker 11: your boys can really see they can harmonize. He said, kay, can,
[21:39] Speaker 11: he said Joe. So she said, Joe, they really can sing.
[21:45] Speaker 11: So he is so see. You know, we sung for
[21:48] Speaker 11: him and he got all excited. That's when he started
[21:51] Speaker 11: buying in going out buying instrument as far as all
[21:53] Speaker 11: the instruments.
[21:56] Speaker 2: So when you guys were kids, was he gigging at
[21:58] Speaker 2: all or was that part of his life done with?
[22:01] Speaker 2: Because I know that he did a few when he had.
[22:04] Speaker 4: A little local band called the Falcons.
[22:06] Speaker 11: He had a band himself, and if they would come
[22:08] Speaker 11: over to the house and play with my uncle. His
[22:10] Speaker 11: brother played guitar and he played guitar, and we used
[22:14] Speaker 11: to watch them play all the time. Sudden just washed
[22:16] Speaker 11: them this gig and to us they were like big professionals,
[22:19] Speaker 11: and we watched them all the time.
[22:21] Speaker 4: And they would play at the house.
[22:23] Speaker 11: It was great watching him play and that's how we
[22:25] Speaker 11: learned about music and just listen to all the Motown
[22:27] Speaker 11: songs on the radio, stuff like that, you know, and
[22:30] Speaker 11: sliding the family Stone, Yes, lining everybody.
[22:33] Speaker 9: Yeah, amazing.
[22:36] Speaker 2: So Marlin, I know that you brought it up earlier,
[22:39] Speaker 2: but I always heard about the legend of Mister Lucky's,
[22:43] Speaker 2: which I guess was like sort of like your home spot.
[22:45] Speaker 2: But what Yeah, what was Mister Lucky's a strip club
[22:51] Speaker 2: today or like.
[22:52] Speaker 10: No, it wasn't a strip club.
[22:53] Speaker 9: It was a little nightclub that was Jeroniana.
[22:57] Speaker 10: And they paid us.
[22:59] Speaker 9: We got paid eight dollars for our first show and
[23:02] Speaker 9: Mister Lucky's. That was the first gig that we got paid,
[23:06] Speaker 9: and we were so happy about it. I mean, but
[23:09] Speaker 9: eight dollars back in those days take you a long way.
[23:11] Speaker 11: And those were the shows that Michael and Marla would
[23:15] Speaker 11: they would throw money on the floor and they would
[23:16] Speaker 11: do the splits and grab the money, and and Marlin
[23:19] Speaker 11: and Tito and I and Jermaine would be because they're
[23:23] Speaker 11: getting all the money.
[23:23] Speaker 4: We weren't getting one there.
[23:28] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you know we've we've heard different accounts, but
[23:33] Speaker 2: I never heard it from you guys verbatim. I mean,
[23:36] Speaker 2: I've talked to Gladys Knight and she told me she
[23:40] Speaker 2: was the one. And then Tommy Chug of Cheaching says
[23:45] Speaker 2: that you know Bobby, Bobby and the Vancouver's. I didn't
[23:49] Speaker 2: know that he wrote because you guys did a cover
[23:52] Speaker 2: of it. I didn't know that he wrote does your
[23:55] Speaker 2: does your mama know about it? I didn't know that
[23:58] Speaker 2: damn Cheaching Chong like or Tommy Shung motown legends. So
[24:03] Speaker 2: what is what is the real story? I know I
[24:05] Speaker 2: know the angle, but who literally made it happen? Yes,
[24:11] Speaker 2: I'm gonna introduce you to this person that leads a barrier.
[24:14] Speaker 11: I'm gonna set the record straight. I'm gonna set the record. Well, well, well,
[24:18] Speaker 11: we played a concert in Gary, Indiana and uh for
[24:24] Speaker 11: our Mayor Richard Gordon Hatchard, who's no longer with us,
[24:28] Speaker 11: he's at the time, and so he was campaigning at
[24:32] Speaker 11: the time. Some Gladys Knight was his his guest there,
[24:35] Speaker 11: you know, and we happen to play the same show.
[24:38] Speaker 11: So she happened she saw us on the concert and
[24:40] Speaker 11: she went back to Barry Gordon, to Barry Gordon, there's
[24:43] Speaker 11: some guys in Indiana. That's that's incredible. You've got to
[24:46] Speaker 11: sign these kids. It was glad who discovered us first,
[24:49] Speaker 11: and Bobby Taylor did this show the then next year
[24:52] Speaker 11: he saw us to say well, he went back to
[24:53] Speaker 11: Barry Gordy said the same exact thing with both of
[24:56] Speaker 11: those people. But Dinad Ross was his biggest artist, the
[25:00] Speaker 11: one who brought us out because it was his biggest suck.
[25:04] Speaker 1: And its us to the world marketing presenting.
[25:07] Speaker 4: It was Gladys Knight and Barbetary was the ones who
[25:09] Speaker 4: discovered us.
[25:11] Speaker 2: That's true, all right, well, true story, they're true. Moving
[25:15] Speaker 2: moving to Los Angeles from Gary, Indiana. How how much
[25:20] Speaker 2: of a fish out of water situation was that for
[25:23] Speaker 2: you guys? As far as uh watching what the world
[25:28] Speaker 2: that you see on television, which is.
[25:30] Speaker 11: Hot because I used to watch all the football games,
[25:33] Speaker 11: and all the football games.
[25:34] Speaker 4: We got Chicago.
[25:35] Speaker 11: Bears, we got Cleveland Browns and snowing outside freeze, and
[25:40] Speaker 11: then they were shown in an afternoon game they would
[25:42] Speaker 11: show San Diego Chargers.
[25:43] Speaker 4: All's rams. Right, So I'm watching TV.
[25:47] Speaker 11: I'm in the snow, freezing my butt off, and I'm
[25:49] Speaker 11: watching TV seeing all these people.
[25:51] Speaker 4: They show the palm trees and show the people in.
[25:54] Speaker 11: The stands having a great time. I said, that's where
[25:56] Speaker 11: I want to go. I want to go to Los Angeles.
[25:58] Speaker 11: I don't know how I'm going to get there, but
[26:00] Speaker 11: that's where I'm going to go. That's where I want
[26:01] Speaker 11: to live. That's what I said to myself. I don't
[26:05] Speaker 11: know how, Yeah, I don't know how I was.
[26:07] Speaker 4: Going to get there.
[26:08] Speaker 11: And some kind of way, we were signed with Motown
[26:12] Speaker 11: and Arry going to decide it to move his office
[26:15] Speaker 11: over to Los Angeles because he wants to get into
[26:18] Speaker 11: the film business.
[26:19] Speaker 1: Right, you know.
[26:20] Speaker 4: So he moved his whole entire office from Detroit.
[26:22] Speaker 11: He still had office, he still had office in Detroit,
[26:25] Speaker 11: but then moved his operation to Los Angeles, California, and
[26:28] Speaker 11: he brought us over there with him.
[26:30] Speaker 1: Was there ever talk of you guys moving to Detroit? First?
[26:33] Speaker 11: To be matter of fact, we did go to Detroit.
[26:35] Speaker 11: It was in Detroit recording our music first and then
[26:39] Speaker 11: we went on to we was how long were we
[26:41] Speaker 11: in Detroit?
[26:41] Speaker 4: About a year? Two years guys recording, about a year.
[26:46] Speaker 9: We signed with We signed with Motown in nineteen sixty eight.
[26:49] Speaker 4: But we told everybody, and people didn't believe it was
[26:52] Speaker 4: because we didn't have.
[26:52] Speaker 9: Any music out. It took over a year before we
[26:55] Speaker 9: even got in the studio.
[26:57] Speaker 4: Yeah, longer than that moment.
[26:59] Speaker 1: Okay. So some of that first album was recorded at
[27:02] Speaker 1: the Hitsfield studio.
[27:04] Speaker 12: And yeah, yes, a lot of it, Yeah, a lot
[27:10] Speaker 12: of it.
[27:11] Speaker 4: The Tempts and all of them would come around.
[27:12] Speaker 11: We would see all those casts, all those people would
[27:14] Speaker 11: come around and give us all kinds of support, and
[27:17] Speaker 11: they was saying hello to us. And Jermaine was trying
[27:21] Speaker 11: to hit on Barry Gordy's door at the time.
[27:23] Speaker 1: Jamames, you succeeded.
[27:27] Speaker 7: Yes, one question I had if I'm Jackie, you're the oldest,
[27:33] Speaker 7: you may have the best memory of it. I was
[27:34] Speaker 7: always curious to know about the corporation, Freddy Parry and
[27:38] Speaker 7: Larry Mizell. Do you have any riches of working with
[27:42] Speaker 7: those guys Deep Richards, Yeah, yeah.
[27:45] Speaker 14: H.
[27:46] Speaker 11: Yeah, they had just got out of they had just
[27:48] Speaker 11: got up college from Howard the University.
[27:52] Speaker 4: Dis graduate from Howard University. And they were incredible.
[27:55] Speaker 11: There were incredible musician songwriters, and Barry Gordy put them
[27:59] Speaker 11: with us and we used to.
[28:01] Speaker 9: Laugh at Freddy Perrin and Finds Myself because they were
[28:05] Speaker 9: We would go into the studio, we see them and
[28:07] Speaker 9: they're on a little mope head scooter, two of them, right, yeah.
[28:16] Speaker 17: You know, yeah yeah, And we passed them up on
[28:26] Speaker 17: the street and they were coming to the studio.
[28:28] Speaker 10: But they had to hit.
[28:32] Speaker 2: A lot of our especially from a hip hop perspective.
[28:37] Speaker 2: I mean, I don't think a lot of people, uh
[28:41] Speaker 2: are contemporaries even equate that, you know, the Mazel Brothers,
[28:46] Speaker 2: their their seventies cats and all the stuff that they
[28:48] Speaker 2: did on Blue Note Records, you know, with Donald Bird
[28:51] Speaker 2: and even the stuff they did with like a Taste
[28:53] Speaker 2: of Honey and all that stuff. Like, I don't think
[28:55] Speaker 2: they even equate that these are the same guys that
[28:58] Speaker 2: also wrote I Will You, I Want You Back in
[29:01] Speaker 2: all those things, I.
[29:02] Speaker 4: Love You and all that. Oh yeah, they were incredible.
[29:05] Speaker 2: And they don't even know that their nephew was jam
[29:09] Speaker 2: Master j from run DMC. They never put two and
[29:12] Speaker 2: two together with that, but yeah, so yeah, I was
[29:15] Speaker 2: gonna say, when you first get to Motown, what is
[29:20] Speaker 2: what is the basic uh work operation? As far as
[29:24] Speaker 2: you guys learning songs?
[29:25] Speaker 9: Because well, let me be let me let me bag
[29:29] Speaker 9: it up for you. I think you find it's interesting.
[29:32] Speaker 10: From from from Gary, Indiana, mm hmm.
[29:36] Speaker 9: We went to Detroit to audition for Barry Cordy, right,
[29:41] Speaker 9: and so we did a lot of Motown songs. And
[29:44] Speaker 9: so Barry had this huge house, had a golf course
[29:48] Speaker 9: in the backyard and the back nine head indoor swimming pool.
[29:52] Speaker 9: You go down downstairs for the ay, all the gangs,
[29:56] Speaker 9: and so we get indo, Michael and I playing in
[29:59] Speaker 9: the pool in the great time. Jackie walking around biting
[30:02] Speaker 9: his nails.
[30:03] Speaker 10: Damn near ate up his.
[30:04] Speaker 9: Fingers because he was so nervous, and he used to
[30:07] Speaker 9: get after Michael and I.
[30:09] Speaker 10: This is serious, guy, this is our chance.
[30:11] Speaker 9: You'll fooling around playing with all the games and stuff.
[30:13] Speaker 10: Get serious.
[30:14] Speaker 9: I mean we were kids, and all of a sudden
[30:16] Speaker 9: we get ready to do our show.
[30:18] Speaker 11: Well, no, all of us were back. All of our
[30:22] Speaker 11: equipment was set up around the pool.
[30:28] Speaker 12: Jackie, let me back up because Martins we had already
[30:32] Speaker 12: auditioned from Hotown the day before. Very decided, yeah, I
[30:37] Speaker 12: want to sign these kids. So he acts. He said,
[30:40] Speaker 12: tomorrow's Dining Ross's birthday. I'm having a party for her
[30:45] Speaker 12: at my house, and.
[30:46] Speaker 14: I want you guys to perform.
[30:49] Speaker 10: And so we round the at this party.
[30:51] Speaker 14: Tell him who was at the party.
[30:53] Speaker 9: Man, We round the pool waiting, and we do a
[30:57] Speaker 9: lot of more times, and all of a sudden, I
[30:58] Speaker 9: see Marvin Gate come through the h the Temps, the
[31:02] Speaker 9: Temps walk through the door, then down Stevie Wonder.
[31:06] Speaker 10: Smokey Robinson, the four Times come through the door.
[31:12] Speaker 11: And also we've got to sing their songs. That's all
[31:16] Speaker 11: the songs we knew, that's all the big hits on
[31:18] Speaker 11: the radio. We didn't have any new original material. Were
[31:21] Speaker 11: singing all these Motown songs in front of the right.
[31:23] Speaker 10: Navid Roughing come in.
[31:26] Speaker 1: Wow, you know this is the first time you made it.
[31:29] Speaker 9: No, yeah, it's the first time. We mean yeah, first time,
[31:33] Speaker 9: and this is their first time seeing us and we're
[31:35] Speaker 9: doing their stuff.
[31:40] Speaker 1: I assume that the show went well because you're here
[31:42] Speaker 1: right now talking about it.
[31:43] Speaker 6: Yes, try out by fire.
[31:45] Speaker 5: How much shit older were guys like Marvin Gay and
[31:48] Speaker 5: Smoky than you at that time?
[31:51] Speaker 14: All they had about fifteen, ten and fifteen years?
[31:55] Speaker 13: Yes?
[31:55] Speaker 1: Should should they? Stevie was kind of appear right, kind of.
[31:59] Speaker 9: Yeah, well yeah, I think Jackie, you were like fifteen
[32:02] Speaker 9: or sixteen at the time.
[32:06] Speaker 1: I heard your sister mentioned that Stevie actually might be
[32:10] Speaker 1: related to you guys. Is that true?
[32:12] Speaker 9: Rue, he's on my mom's side of Yes.
[32:16] Speaker 1: When did y'all find this out?
[32:17] Speaker 4: A lot of people don't know that my first cousin.
[32:19] Speaker 9: Second, you got to ask my mom. But all this
[32:25] Speaker 9: is to me, this is funny because we were we
[32:28] Speaker 9: were somewhere and Stevie tells them, uh, and I was
[32:31] Speaker 9: talking with Stevie this is at my at my father's funeral.
[32:35] Speaker 9: And then then all the way he told me, he said, Amelia,
[32:38] Speaker 9: give them all on my numbers since we because.
[32:46] Speaker 1: Does he call in the morning as well? He's famous?
[32:53] Speaker 9: Yeah, we we You know, I've been We've been blessed.
[32:56] Speaker 9: We had some great times. You know, it's what you
[32:59] Speaker 9: do with that time and how you treat it. And
[33:02] Speaker 9: we've had some great times.
[33:04] Speaker 5: Okay, I'm sorry. I got to follow up on this,
[33:06] Speaker 5: So did you and Stevie? Did you guys and Stevie
[33:09] Speaker 5: wanted to know you were cousins back then? Or did
[33:11] Speaker 5: this come up recently?
[33:13] Speaker 9: No, we did not know. Matter of fact, Stevie did
[33:15] Speaker 9: a couple of songs on us during the Motown days
[33:18] Speaker 9: and and uh, we didn't know that we were cousins.
[33:21] Speaker 9: And those songs that Stevie did on us, they were
[33:23] Speaker 9: never released, you know. And I think Butterfly, no butter
[33:30] Speaker 9: Cup have but not that you have, not nothing, nothing song.
[33:34] Speaker 4: That's one question is talking.
[33:35] Speaker 1: About, well, you're supposed to keep your love for me
[33:41] Speaker 1: from the original? Was there any other besides butter Club?
[33:46] Speaker 9: Of course, Buttercup, you're supposed to keep your love for me.
[33:50] Speaker 9: I think there was one or two more others. I forgot. Man,
[33:53] Speaker 9: we did so many songs. Motown got so many songs
[33:56] Speaker 9: that we we can when I hear so we did
[33:59] Speaker 9: that right, we lived in the studio.
[34:02] Speaker 2: That's what I want to get to you, guys. I've
[34:05] Speaker 2: seen at least the the Motown faults. I've seen them
[34:09] Speaker 2: and seen the catalogs, and to me, it's staggering.
[34:14] Speaker 1: How big is it?
[34:14] Speaker 8: A mirrorkell?
[34:15] Speaker 1: People? Please?
[34:15] Speaker 8: You know we want to be.
[34:16] Speaker 2: I mean, you know, it was over two hundred songs,
[34:18] Speaker 2: but the thing is like they're two hundred completed songs
[34:23] Speaker 2: and half the stuff didn't see the light of day.
[34:26] Speaker 2: So like, what is can you walk me through how
[34:31] Speaker 2: you guys get like do you have like mere seconds
[34:33] Speaker 2: to learn it? Do you at least get a work
[34:35] Speaker 2: tape the night before to figure out your arrangements?
[34:40] Speaker 4: We walked through to we go in the studio.
[34:41] Speaker 13: They put the off to school after school, Jackie we
[34:45] Speaker 13: go after school.
[34:47] Speaker 11: There's the studio recording studio right and the recording studio
[34:51] Speaker 11: was right around the corner right on Fair Facts, and
[34:54] Speaker 11: half the kids at the school never knew that we
[34:56] Speaker 11: were going to the recording studio recording I Want You
[34:58] Speaker 11: Back ABC. They've been know that not even a block away.
[35:02] Speaker 11: We recording to him record these songs. And they put
[35:06] Speaker 11: up the track and we learned it and singing and
[35:09] Speaker 11: all that. We pretty much do a song today. But
[35:11] Speaker 11: we came back to finish it the next day. The
[35:14] Speaker 11: really really completed finish it the next day. It took
[35:17] Speaker 11: us a day and a half to finish the whole song.
[35:19] Speaker 9: That's because we had and the reason being is that
[35:22] Speaker 9: we were youngsters, and we had a social worker that
[35:25] Speaker 9: came with us, so she made sure that they didn't
[35:28] Speaker 9: work us over three hours, so they only we only
[35:31] Speaker 9: had three hours to you.
[35:33] Speaker 1: Yes, you did all that work in the three hours.
[35:37] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[35:37] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a lot of songs.
[35:41] Speaker 11: And Michael was going there and Michael would ad lib
[35:44] Speaker 11: and do his own ad libs, and he made all
[35:46] Speaker 11: that stuff at all this at the end of that's him.
[35:49] Speaker 4: They didn't tell him that he made up all that stuff.
[35:51] Speaker 1: Yeh, wow, that's exhausting.
[35:53] Speaker 9: So yeah, So and that was every That was almost
[35:56] Speaker 9: every day.
[35:57] Speaker 14: Yeah, in the weekends, even the weekends. Weekends were longer.
[36:03] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[36:05] Speaker 11: So the next day we come back to school on Monday,
[36:07] Speaker 11: and we're on the Ed Sullivant Show and all we
[36:12] Speaker 11: come back to school and all the kids noticed that,
[36:14] Speaker 11: Wait a minute, these after Jackson's they noticed us being
[36:19] Speaker 11: on the Ed Sullivant Show. We go back to school
[36:21] Speaker 11: the next day, I'm in the classroom and all of
[36:24] Speaker 11: a sudden, I'm in the classroom sitting in the classroom
[36:27] Speaker 11: and all these kids from all the other schools come
[36:30] Speaker 11: to come to Fairfax High School from all the other
[36:32] Speaker 11: kids come over and just screaming at to do the
[36:35] Speaker 11: screen like pandemonium, and the kids wondered, what's going on?
[36:39] Speaker 11: Why they screaming or they saw me in the classroom
[36:42] Speaker 11: and they start screaming like crazy.
[36:44] Speaker 4: They didn't know we were the Jackson They didn't.
[36:46] Speaker 9: Now, let me tell you something. This is my first
[36:49] Speaker 9: time hearing Jackie's story about that, and I have to say,
[36:53] Speaker 9: Michael and I we were going to Emerson Junior High
[36:56] Speaker 9: School and we were the same. Thing happened to us
[37:01] Speaker 9: to the point that kids just started going crazy and
[37:04] Speaker 9: they had to pull us out of school because we
[37:06] Speaker 9: were disrupting class the whole school, and they put us
[37:10] Speaker 9: in private school.
[37:12] Speaker 2: So you went to a regular school first, Yeah, we
[37:14] Speaker 2: went to regularly. No other contemporaries of yours were in
[37:18] Speaker 2: like Fairfax Hide, none of these Thames.
[37:21] Speaker 9: No we went I went to when I when we
[37:23] Speaker 9: got here, nobody knew who the Jackson five were. So
[37:26] Speaker 9: I went to Bancroft Junior High. Michael went to Gardenet,
[37:29] Speaker 9: I mean my Gardener Gardener Elementary School, then the Falling Street.
[37:35] Speaker 9: Michael and I went went over to Emerson Junior High.
[37:38] Speaker 9: We only was able to go for two weeks because
[37:42] Speaker 9: we were disrupting the classes and the kids were going crazy.
[37:47] Speaker 2: Wow, So you didn't get uh so, what's the like
[37:51] Speaker 2: in private school? Is it more different because all of
[37:53] Speaker 2: you are industry kids or we were.
[37:56] Speaker 9: Going to school with with some of the main celebrity here.
[38:00] Speaker 9: They would go to the same school with us, and
[38:04] Speaker 9: even well, this is a funny story, Joe McClean to.
[38:08] Speaker 9: If you know who John McClean is.
[38:12] Speaker 1: Wait, this is what you're gonna get the most elusive
[38:18] Speaker 1: we've been dying to get it on the show.
[38:21] Speaker 9: It's oh so John, So John to tell history. He
[38:26] Speaker 9: said his mom brought him.
[38:27] Speaker 10: To this private school and he said, Mom, I don't
[38:32] Speaker 10: go here.
[38:32] Speaker 9: I don't want to go I don't want to go here.
[38:35] Speaker 9: And John said, all of a sudden, he's he loves
[38:38] Speaker 9: Tito Walking across, he said, Tito Jackson, Hey, mom, I'm fine.
[38:44] Speaker 8: I tell y'all popularity. Did everybody have to go to
[38:56] Speaker 8: the special school?
[38:57] Speaker 15: Now?
[38:57] Speaker 8: Like the girls too? And I don't know Randy was
[38:59] Speaker 8: here by now everybody just have to.
[39:04] Speaker 9: Eventually they did, Yes, yes they did eventually. Yeah, but
[39:10] Speaker 9: you know it's it's that's what took place, That's what
[39:12] Speaker 9: happened with us.
[39:13] Speaker 2: It's you know, I know that your parents' concerns over
[39:22] Speaker 2: gang culture in Indiana was one thing, but most of
[39:27] Speaker 2: us that don't live in Los Angeles, most of us,
[39:29] Speaker 2: especially when you're thinking of like for young black people,
[39:33] Speaker 2: like gang culture was a part of life, Like, how
[39:36] Speaker 2: is that avoided?
[39:37] Speaker 9: Well, my father made sure, I mean he laid down
[39:41] Speaker 9: the law. M hm, that's it. We had to be
[39:44] Speaker 9: inside before the street lights came on to Yeah, that's
[39:50] Speaker 9: what it's supposed to.
[39:53] Speaker 1: That's how I came up to.
[39:54] Speaker 9: Same thing set you better not get caught up, would
[39:58] Speaker 9: do street lights on?
[40:01] Speaker 1: So okay, was it still okay? What was what was
[40:06] Speaker 1: the chores situation at the house like was that yeah,
[40:10] Speaker 1: I mean I'm certain that you sure had to.
[40:13] Speaker 9: Oh yeah, we had to.
[40:14] Speaker 10: We had chores. We had chores.
[40:18] Speaker 9: We had to wash the dishes. Even even after we
[40:21] Speaker 9: made it with the Jackson five and came out, we
[40:24] Speaker 9: still had chores.
[40:25] Speaker 8: Well, y'all still lived in the house together, right, So yeah.
[40:27] Speaker 9: So yeah, it was I think Michael and I week
[40:32] Speaker 9: to do the dishes, and Jackie and somebody else had
[40:35] Speaker 9: a week. Yeah, somebody you know had a week.
[40:38] Speaker 4: Yeah, So there was in the house yeah, we had chores.
[40:43] Speaker 6: Is the family resident still Uh? Is that still where
[40:46] Speaker 6: your mother is?
[40:47] Speaker 11: Yeah?
[40:48] Speaker 10: But if we were on Queen's Road, Yeah, we were
[40:51] Speaker 10: on Queen's Yeah.
[40:53] Speaker 9: And we first got here, we were on Queen's Road. Well,
[40:57] Speaker 9: we first stayed at the Tropic Camp in a motel
[41:02] Speaker 9: a while on Santa Monic because that on Santa Monica,
[41:05] Speaker 9: Little Santa Monica or something like that.
[41:07] Speaker 11: And when I got there, the first time I got
[41:10] Speaker 11: the cat of Los Santles, I couldn't believe how people
[41:12] Speaker 11: were living.
[41:13] Speaker 4: Almost cried, I said, even living like this all all
[41:16] Speaker 4: my life, living this good life like this and driving
[41:19] Speaker 4: ferrari and rolle voyages down the street.
[41:21] Speaker 13: I mean it was just amazing. I mean people living
[41:25] Speaker 13: in the hills and the palm trees and you know
[41:27] Speaker 13: what I'm saying, and I'm guarante Ana freezing on my
[41:30] Speaker 13: butt off, and these people living like this.
[41:36] Speaker 9: We lived that. We lived in the Tropicana for a while,
[41:39] Speaker 9: and then, uh believe, before we went to Queen's Road,
[41:44] Speaker 9: we lived with Donna Ross. Yeah, yes, and she she
[41:49] Speaker 9: had she had a house with white carpet everywhere and
[41:54] Speaker 9: white walls, and I think some of the furniture was white,
[41:58] Speaker 9: and she.
[41:59] Speaker 11: She told the house with us, we all too that
[42:02] Speaker 11: paint on the walls and paint the walls like she
[42:05] Speaker 11: was like, yeah, yeah, we had fun.
[42:07] Speaker 10: Yeah, they also had a.
[42:08] Speaker 4: Lot of money, but you a lot.
[42:10] Speaker 10: Of money.
[42:18] Speaker 9: Like that.
[42:19] Speaker 1: Yeah, I was for the other side of the story.
[42:21] Speaker 11: Mary Wilson would come over to the house. It was
[42:23] Speaker 11: so kind of so it's amazing. Mary would come over,
[42:27] Speaker 11: you know.
[42:28] Speaker 10: For how's my babies.
[42:33] Speaker 9: So we you know, we were young kids, but we
[42:36] Speaker 9: had fun and they made sure that we had fun too.
[42:39] Speaker 9: I mean, you know, they used to pick us up
[42:41] Speaker 9: and take us to the movie sometime down matter of fact,
[42:44] Speaker 9: down Ross pick Michael and I when she first had
[42:48] Speaker 9: her first baby, and this is where she lived on
[42:51] Speaker 9: Maple and Beverly Hills, and.
[42:53] Speaker 10: We all went upstairs.
[42:55] Speaker 9: We were all went upstairs and she wanted us to
[42:57] Speaker 9: paint some drapes because she was having a baby at
[42:59] Speaker 9: first kid. So we painted the drapes and do figures
[43:02] Speaker 9: on it for the kid. And we had a great time,
[43:06] Speaker 9: you know, I mean.
[43:09] Speaker 2: Really yeah, Well, I want to know from Tito and
[43:15] Speaker 2: Jackie because you two are older. I guess in my
[43:18] Speaker 2: mind because I see the Jackson's as kind of the
[43:22] Speaker 2: first family of post civil rights movement, like all the
[43:28] Speaker 2: struggle that happened before nineteen sixty eight, Like you guys
[43:31] Speaker 2: are the first to flourish and to post civil rights activity,
[43:36] Speaker 2: But you guys are also teenagers in Los Angeles and
[43:40] Speaker 2: you're successful at that. So I'm certain that there's also
[43:43] Speaker 2: moments where, like you're in situations in which you're the
[43:47] Speaker 2: only black person there, or you're driving an elaborate car
[43:52] Speaker 2: that normally isn't.
[43:54] Speaker 1: You know, associated with people that look like you. Like
[43:58] Speaker 1: how hard was it to.
[44:01] Speaker 2: Navigate in Los Angeles as teenagers where it's not so cute?
[44:06] Speaker 2: I mean, it's one thing when it's like Marlon and Michael,
[44:09] Speaker 2: who are like eleven twelve younger. Was it different for
[44:14] Speaker 2: a young black teenager in nineteen seventy two, seventy three,
[44:17] Speaker 2: seventy four, like the first half of the seventies.
[44:20] Speaker 14: I had an experience once when I was about I
[44:26] Speaker 14: was in my.
[44:28] Speaker 12: Late teens or early twenties, and I had got myself
[44:33] Speaker 12: for the Mercedes the three fifty essal I think it was,
[44:36] Speaker 12: and that's when I had stopped to get gasoline for
[44:41] Speaker 12: my automobile and this is the time when they put
[44:45] Speaker 12: gas in your car.
[44:47] Speaker 14: You didn't have to do it.
[44:48] Speaker 1: They do it for you.
[44:50] Speaker 12: And I pull in that I say, what do you want?
[44:52] Speaker 12: I said, fill it up and can you check the oil?
[44:56] Speaker 12: So I pulled the lever for the thing. And you
[45:02] Speaker 12: know all the car, you know, there's two levers. There's
[45:04] Speaker 12: one outside as well.
[45:06] Speaker 14: So got yankee and I said, whoa, whoa, whoa, let
[45:08] Speaker 14: me let me. So I go out and show him
[45:12] Speaker 14: how to do it too.
[45:13] Speaker 12: He slams my hood, then pulls pumps my gas and
[45:18] Speaker 12: drip gas all on the side of my car and
[45:22] Speaker 12: then takes Then I go inside and I noticed he's calling.
[45:27] Speaker 14: It on my credit card. So I told him, I said,
[45:30] Speaker 14: I don't want to pay for the service. So he
[45:33] Speaker 14: goes to the people on the phones. Wait a minute.
[45:35] Speaker 12: He goes to a drawer, pulls out a gun, holds
[45:39] Speaker 12: it to my head and said sign it. Of course
[45:42] Speaker 12: I signed it. I signed it. I immediately, This is
[45:46] Speaker 12: before cell phones. I go to a stop as a
[45:48] Speaker 12: phone booth, call our security Bill Braid. Bill, who's a detective.
[45:55] Speaker 12: He rushes out to Chatsworth where I was immediately and
[46:00] Speaker 12: go to the police station explain the story to them.
[46:04] Speaker 14: They go over to the station, picks up.
[46:08] Speaker 12: The guy, come back, and then they tell us that
[46:13] Speaker 12: if we if we arrest this man, we're gonna have
[46:16] Speaker 12: to rest mister Jackson too, for not for refusing to
[46:20] Speaker 12: pay for service.
[46:22] Speaker 14: So the guy walked, that's that's how that's how it ended.
[46:26] Speaker 12: Yep, of course it was. And this guy, I guess
[46:31] Speaker 12: he wasn't used to seeing the young black guy of color,
[46:34] Speaker 12: whether he's young or not. You know, it was such
[46:37] Speaker 12: a nice automobile because back then those Mercedes were very
[46:41] Speaker 12: high items, and I was the only nineteen driving one.
[46:45] Speaker 9: So well, my my story is is a little different.
[46:49] Speaker 9: This is we had our TV show, The Jackson Show,
[46:53] Speaker 9: and yeah, and you know, and we lived in the
[46:58] Speaker 9: Sino in a lot and we were shooting that shows
[47:02] Speaker 9: somewhere and not at the CBS slot, but somewhere else.
[47:05] Speaker 9: So I will come through Beverly Hills and over the
[47:07] Speaker 9: hill to go home. And my first car was a Porsche,
[47:13] Speaker 9: a Porsche, and the police saw me driving, so he
[47:17] Speaker 9: pulls me over and he walks up to the car
[47:20] Speaker 9: and said, is this your car? I said yes.
[47:25] Speaker 10: He said driver's license such and such. I gave it
[47:27] Speaker 10: to him. He sees Encino on it.
[47:31] Speaker 9: Why are you going home this way? And I'm looking like,
[47:35] Speaker 9: what do you mean while I'm going home this way?
[47:38] Speaker 9: And yeah, you can go home any kind of way
[47:41] Speaker 9: you want.
[47:41] Speaker 6: To, and who says I'm going home right?
[47:44] Speaker 9: And then and then he says, well, where you get
[47:47] Speaker 9: the money to buy a car like this from? And
[47:49] Speaker 9: I tell him, you know, I'm an artist, I do
[47:52] Speaker 9: records and whatever, and he wrote me up some phony
[47:56] Speaker 9: Ticke wrote me up a ticket for whatever it says it.
[48:00] Speaker 9: I gave it to our people to take care of.
[48:03] Speaker 9: But I think Jackie, all of us used to get
[48:06] Speaker 9: pulled over all the time, asking us, uh, I got
[48:11] Speaker 9: a real funny story for you after this used to uh,
[48:16] Speaker 9: used to give us tickets and pull us over just
[48:18] Speaker 9: to harass us.
[48:19] Speaker 10: But here is my real funny story.
[48:22] Speaker 9: This story is so funny that I could Jackie, you know,
[48:25] Speaker 9: don't give a tell. So Michael's first car was a
[48:29] Speaker 9: Rose Royce.
[48:31] Speaker 10: He was and he was eighteen.
[48:33] Speaker 9: But Michael, he parked anywhere he didn't know. So one
[48:39] Speaker 9: day I'm he didn't care.
[48:42] Speaker 10: I'm driving down the street.
[48:43] Speaker 9: I thought it was so funny. I'm driving down the
[48:45] Speaker 9: street and the police got Michael handcuffed to a bench.
[48:50] Speaker 1: Wait, he was.
[48:57] Speaker 10: Because he had a lot of parking tickets.
[49:04] Speaker 8: Did you stop?
[49:06] Speaker 1: They never heard that story. Journalists are asking the wrong questions.
[49:13] Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah I did.
[49:14] Speaker 9: But you can't say you couldn't say too much. And
[49:18] Speaker 9: and they let they let him go after it. I mean,
[49:21] Speaker 9: you know, it's back in those days.
[49:22] Speaker 8: You could you couldn't say you pull up the street
[49:24] Speaker 8: and you just looking from behind in the mirror.
[49:26] Speaker 4: All right, Yes, tell him the story.
[49:31] Speaker 11: When we went down to Alabama, uh, for my mother's Uh,
[49:36] Speaker 11: they took Michael.
[49:37] Speaker 4: He went into this. Michael went to this. Yeah, he
[49:41] Speaker 4: shot down South.
[49:43] Speaker 9: Tell him what do Yeah, yeah, Mike, because Mike, Mike
[49:46] Speaker 9: like antique. So the security was with him. So Bill say,
[49:49] Speaker 9: I'm gonna go to the restaurant right quick. And the
[49:53] Speaker 9: owner of the store, I don't know if he called
[49:55] Speaker 9: the police whatever, he thought Michael was trying to steal
[49:57] Speaker 9: stuff out of the store. He didn't know who he was.
[50:00] Speaker 9: I think he and he got a gun. And then
[50:04] Speaker 9: Bill's and they took Michael somewhere looking for Michael and
[50:09] Speaker 9: looking for Michael Jackie.
[50:10] Speaker 10: I didn't forgot some of this stuff.
[50:12] Speaker 11: He took Michael to the back room somewhere and tied
[50:15] Speaker 11: him down. Michael was in the back room somewhere, like
[50:17] Speaker 11: in the.
[50:19] Speaker 4: Back ship. This is like, this is like in hies,
[50:23] Speaker 4: late seventies.
[50:25] Speaker 9: Yeah.
[50:26] Speaker 11: Yeah, we're looking all over Michael and they had him
[50:29] Speaker 11: tied down in the back ship. It's almost like the
[50:32] Speaker 11: clamor was gonna take him away somewhere, and you know
[50:34] Speaker 11: they were saving.
[50:35] Speaker 1: Them for that. Yeah, the story started with Alabama.
[50:43] Speaker 11: Yeah, so we're looking for Michael all over the place
[50:51] Speaker 11: and this guy had him tied down the back room
[50:54] Speaker 11: and this was like an antique stuff full of books
[50:56] Speaker 11: and all kind of antiques.
[50:57] Speaker 4: Michael liked the old stuff. He like buying stuff like that, right,
[51:01] Speaker 4: And it took him.
[51:03] Speaker 11: They thought he was trying to steal something and he
[51:04] Speaker 11: took him in the back room and we went in
[51:07] Speaker 11: the store. We couldn't find him. He was in some
[51:09] Speaker 11: other kind of ship behind behind that store.
[51:11] Speaker 4: He was in another kind of.
[51:14] Speaker 1: Jackson.
[51:15] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[51:16] Speaker 8: Hard to get him released.
[51:17] Speaker 4: Yeah, we got a release and they realized school he was.
[51:19] Speaker 3: But we we didn't.
[51:21] Speaker 9: We let it go.
[51:21] Speaker 4: We didn't put it in the press. We let it
[51:23] Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying, yeah, if it.
[51:25] Speaker 7: Wasn't him until now a regular, it was any other Jackson, right,
[51:30] Speaker 7: it was Michael Johnson.
[51:32] Speaker 2: Right, speaking speaking of Bill Bray. So I came across
[51:36] Speaker 2: this this this like raw footage of a concert. I mean,
[51:41] Speaker 2: I guess it was the Destiny era. But I was
[51:45] Speaker 2: just looking at this footage and I'm noticing that the
[51:50] Speaker 2: way that security is handled is not like it is now.
[51:53] Speaker 2: Like there was no separation gait or something. The whole
[51:58] Speaker 2: fans back like basically fans were one inch away from,
[52:03] Speaker 2: you know, climbing on stage. And there's a point where
[52:07] Speaker 2: I guess Bill Bray is giving you guys like a
[52:09] Speaker 2: pep talk backstage on you know what my signals are?
[52:13] Speaker 2: How often did you guys have to prematurely cut a show.
[52:21] Speaker 1: Man all the time? So getting through a show was
[52:25] Speaker 1: actually a hard thing to do.
[52:28] Speaker 8: It was was it a song that popped them off?
[52:30] Speaker 8: Or was it just like the moment you stepped on.
[52:32] Speaker 14: Stage, the moment they said, the moment they set eyes on.
[52:37] Speaker 3: Me in the morning it was a pandem morning yea.
[52:53] Speaker 9: And believe it, believe it or not, there was a
[52:55] Speaker 9: few times where we had bump threats. You know, and
[52:59] Speaker 9: at one time they did find a bomb under the stage.
[53:01] Speaker 9: He brought in the police dogs and all that stuff.
[53:04] Speaker 10: So it you know it, it's been different.
[53:08] Speaker 9: So it's been different. We've been through a bunch of
[53:11] Speaker 9: the We used to go to shows in armor trucks
[53:14] Speaker 9: because even on the Vision Tour we had death threats.
[53:17] Speaker 6: We sure did it really?
[53:19] Speaker 14: Wow?
[53:19] Speaker 5: Yeah, you're all brave for a bunch of fucking musicians.
[53:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, what was the decision to not?
[53:30] Speaker 2: I mean, you know, we live in a time now
[53:32] Speaker 2: where you know, especially in social media, just everything's transparent
[53:36] Speaker 2: and there's you know, nothing that's not revealed.
[53:40] Speaker 1: What was the decision and not.
[53:43] Speaker 2: Ever releasing these stories that things have happened for fear
[53:46] Speaker 2: that copycats might try to follow, or.
[53:50] Speaker 9: It's just never dawned on us. We you know, it
[53:52] Speaker 9: was part of our life, and I don't know, as
[53:56] Speaker 9: we talked it just you know, we would try to
[54:01] Speaker 9: We weren't crazy about you know, putting stuff in the
[54:03] Speaker 9: press and and and those things. You know, we just
[54:08] Speaker 9: move on with our life and keep going. I remember
[54:10] Speaker 9: one time, long time ago, uh in Chatsworth again, Chessworth, California.
[54:16] Speaker 9: My kids were at a park and my son drew
[54:20] Speaker 9: it in the grass, and a whole bunch of people
[54:22] Speaker 9: stood up and they were the KKK and uh, and
[54:28] Speaker 9: some other friends came and and my wife and Jackie's
[54:32] Speaker 9: wife and all jumped in the car car and took off.
[54:36] Speaker 9: They came with bats and chains and uh. And somebody
[54:40] Speaker 9: called the police and said there was a bunch of
[54:44] Speaker 9: black ladies with afro wigs, I mean huge afros and
[54:49] Speaker 9: and driving in the Mercedes down the streets flying And
[54:52] Speaker 9: none of them had not none of them had an afro,
[54:54] Speaker 9: but they just saw the color of your skin and
[54:56] Speaker 9: they just said afro and and it was crazy. It
[55:02] Speaker 9: was they were coming after him to kill him. They
[55:05] Speaker 9: were having the picnic, and they jumped in the car,
[55:08] Speaker 9: got all this stuff and just took off. And these
[55:10] Speaker 9: guys with chains and bats coming after females.
[55:16] Speaker 15: Were you guys able to share these situations and lean
[55:19] Speaker 15: on some of your peers, because I'm sure y'all weren't
[55:21] Speaker 15: the only ones going through stuff at the time.
[55:23] Speaker 7: Like who do y'all talk to about how to navigate
[55:25] Speaker 7: all this stuff at that time in y'all lives?
[55:27] Speaker 8: Not to mention you got parents from the South, but still.
[55:30] Speaker 14: Sometimes we take care of it ourselves.
[55:39] Speaker 6: Question love it was the way the bullet, that's what says,
[55:56] Speaker 6: you know, ask answer this question.
[55:58] Speaker 8: When he came before, who is the first Jackson to
[56:00] Speaker 8: pop off? You said, Jermaine is the first jackson?
[56:04] Speaker 14: Uh to want to I would run home the mama.
[56:13] Speaker 1: Start he started to fight.
[56:15] Speaker 14: He started to fight me fighting and run home and
[56:19] Speaker 14: tell mama, I'm fighting.
[56:25] Speaker 1: Wait, Marlon, I have a question.
[56:27] Speaker 2: So one of one of my favorite J five albums
[56:32] Speaker 2: was Get It Together, and in particular, I mean, I
[56:36] Speaker 2: realize that now when when I was older that that
[56:39] Speaker 2: was accidently no, no, no, uh mama h the cover
[56:44] Speaker 2: of uh Mama got Randon new thing. Don't say no,
[56:47] Speaker 2: I'm realizing that you singing on it?
[56:50] Speaker 1: How are you guys?
[56:51] Speaker 15: Uh?
[56:52] Speaker 2: What would you what would you say, fante, I'm having
[56:54] Speaker 2: lost a wards? You call it the would you say
[56:58] Speaker 2: the operation of uh the division division of labor? Division
[57:02] Speaker 2: of labor?
[57:03] Speaker 1: Yeah? What what is the division of labor? As far
[57:05] Speaker 1: as who gets what part or no?
[57:08] Speaker 9: Well, that song was was produced by how Davis, so
[57:12] Speaker 9: he would tell us who's going to sing this, who's
[57:15] Speaker 9: going to sing that, Who's going to sing this? Even
[57:18] Speaker 9: in the corporation. You're gonna sing this part. You're gonna
[57:20] Speaker 9: sing this part and and that's how and that's what
[57:24] Speaker 9: we did when it, you know, and and that's what
[57:27] Speaker 9: and that's what we did.
[57:29] Speaker 1: And did you sing on any other Jackson songs that
[57:32] Speaker 1: didn't make it?
[57:33] Speaker 10: Or like I think body Language is another one that
[57:36] Speaker 10: I sung on too.
[57:41] Speaker 14: He said that didn't make it?
[57:43] Speaker 10: He said, quest has been so long ago.
[57:49] Speaker 9: I got c R S.
[57:55] Speaker 4: I remember what CRS disease?
[58:02] Speaker 9: Yeah, I should do, you know, after after, after you
[58:05] Speaker 9: get past fifty you know stuff, come and go?
[58:08] Speaker 8: Can I ask can I ask you a dancing question
[58:11] Speaker 8: that that you may remember?
[58:12] Speaker 9: I mean that Wait, wait, that don't mean them answering.
[58:17] Speaker 1: Somebody the moment right now, right for real, for real, Marlin,
[58:24] Speaker 1: for the moment right now? You do mean?
[58:26] Speaker 6: Man, yeah, that too.
[58:28] Speaker 15: But I was going to ask you, like your dancing story,
[58:30] Speaker 15: like you talked about you and Michael being fans of
[58:32] Speaker 15: Jackie Wilson and being a fan of the dance.
[58:34] Speaker 8: But I'm just curious, like as.
[58:36] Speaker 15: You evolved, as dance evolved, like who are some of
[58:38] Speaker 15: the folks that you started looking to like.
[58:41] Speaker 9: We we believe or not we used to watch James
[58:44] Speaker 9: Brown like you, said Jackie Wilson. We used to watch
[58:47] Speaker 9: fred the Stare Gene Kelly.
[58:51] Speaker 6: J Rogers.
[58:52] Speaker 9: No, no, no, no, we won't tip.
[58:55] Speaker 10: We were walking on our toes.
[58:56] Speaker 4: Now Michael knock on Freda's store's door.
[59:02] Speaker 9: No, no, let me tell us jack Jackie. I got
[59:05] Speaker 9: so so one day, uh you know, Michael said, Marma,
[59:08] Speaker 9: come come pick me up. I don't feel like driving
[59:10] Speaker 9: to the studio. I said, okay, I'm gonna come get you.
[59:13] Speaker 9: And we drove Michael's car. His roll here out in
[59:15] Speaker 9: the car, Michael said, well, Marma, I want you to
[59:17] Speaker 9: go this way. I said which way? I said, why
[59:20] Speaker 9: are we going this way? He said, just go this way,
[59:23] Speaker 9: and then we go in through Beverly Hills. He said,
[59:25] Speaker 9: tear down this street. I said, said, well, you're not
[59:27] Speaker 9: going to the studio, Mike. He said, Dad is to
[59:30] Speaker 9: drive down there. Mike, I'm not driving down somebody's driveway. Marma,
[59:34] Speaker 9: just drive down the driveway. He get out the car
[59:36] Speaker 9: and knock on the door. It was Freddie Stair's house.
[59:43] Speaker 9: You know, you out the car, knock on the door.
[59:45] Speaker 9: Fredis Stair wasn't home. I don't know where he was
[59:47] Speaker 9: and I said, who, man, that's that's where Freddie Staire lives.
[59:50] Speaker 9: That's his house. And somebody answered the door and told
[59:54] Speaker 9: him that Freddie's Stair wasn't home at the time. And
[59:56] Speaker 9: then we went on to the studio.
[59:58] Speaker 4: But say this, stay Davia's house too, right, walking time?
[1:00:04] Speaker 9: What time we were in?
[1:00:06] Speaker 1: Uh?
[1:00:07] Speaker 9: Sometimes figure out why we were there though we were
[1:00:09] Speaker 9: so we Richie Pride lived in North in the North
[1:00:12] Speaker 9: threege so we Michael and I. I don't think I
[1:00:14] Speaker 9: ever told you all this, Jackie. So Michael and I
[1:00:17] Speaker 9: we stopped. We went to Richard Pride's house. Right, we
[1:00:18] Speaker 9: knocked on the door. He come in. He's talking to us,
[1:00:21] Speaker 9: and what was so funny to me?
[1:00:23] Speaker 10: That we're leaving?
[1:00:25] Speaker 9: And Richie goes to us, he said, yeah, that that's
[1:00:28] Speaker 9: the Mercedes I shot the tires out of which he
[1:00:30] Speaker 9: tried to.
[1:00:32] Speaker 3: Wait where she tried to leave.
[1:00:37] Speaker 1: Right. Remember that.
[1:00:44] Speaker 15: I was also asking, like after fredstare like as the
[1:00:46] Speaker 15: time went on the seventies and eighties, where the other
[1:00:49] Speaker 15: folks too, did you were like? Because I know Michael
[1:00:52] Speaker 15: implemented new styles and dance and form into his thing.
[1:00:54] Speaker 8: But Marlon, I mean, I know you do your thing
[1:00:57] Speaker 8: I seen you. You still do your thing, you.
[1:01:00] Speaker 10: Appreciate it, trying to do something.
[1:01:01] Speaker 1: Wait, can I add to that question? What did you
[1:01:04] Speaker 1: guys work with Charlie Atkins at all?
[1:01:07] Speaker 13: No?
[1:01:07] Speaker 10: No, never did.
[1:01:09] Speaker 1: Who is the choreographer for the Jackson five?
[1:01:12] Speaker 10: Jackie?
[1:01:14] Speaker 12: In the very beginning, we got assistance from Suzanne to
[1:01:18] Speaker 12: pass uh. She had a choreographed some of the I
[1:01:22] Speaker 12: want you back stuff, the Sullivan stuff. But after that
[1:01:26] Speaker 12: is basically even before that, it's always been the groups
[1:01:30] Speaker 12: on their own thing.
[1:01:31] Speaker 9: Yeah, Jackie Michael and I we fool around. Jackie Michael
[1:01:34] Speaker 9: and I. We until we realized we running out of time,
[1:01:37] Speaker 9: didn't we say we better get serious with this.
[1:01:39] Speaker 10: That's what That's what we did on Motime twenty five.
[1:01:42] Speaker 9: We spend almost two or three hours in the room talking, look, hey,
[1:01:46] Speaker 9: the shoot tomorrow. We don't have any choreography before Wait.
[1:01:48] Speaker 6: What Wow, y'all did that the night before y'all did that?
[1:01:53] Speaker 1: Yeah?
[1:01:53] Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, yes, what yeah?
[1:01:58] Speaker 7: So my question what was y'all thought? This movie means
[1:02:01] Speaker 7: the world to us, but to y'all. Want to know
[1:02:03] Speaker 7: the v H one American Jackson's American?
[1:02:08] Speaker 1: Yeah, the music?
[1:02:10] Speaker 10: You got to ask Jackie Tito that I've never seen it.
[1:02:13] Speaker 1: You are lie, seriously, No, I've never seen it.
[1:02:16] Speaker 9: I've never seen it.
[1:02:17] Speaker 4: Model me too.
[1:02:20] Speaker 1: All right, wait seriously, part of it.
[1:02:24] Speaker 9: I've never seen it.
[1:02:25] Speaker 11: But can I tell you something. My father wasn't like that.
[1:02:29] Speaker 11: They made him like he was so I mean, he
[1:02:32] Speaker 11: wasn't like that. They made like a real bad.
[1:02:35] Speaker 4: Guy and he was not like that.
[1:02:39] Speaker 8: Just strength.
[1:02:40] Speaker 4: Yeah, it's for the movie. I mean, my father disciplined
[1:02:42] Speaker 4: us because he had six boys, you know, and around
[1:02:45] Speaker 4: gangs like that. He wasn't like that.
[1:02:47] Speaker 9: But matter of fact, that's how we learned how to
[1:02:49] Speaker 9: dance dodge.
[1:02:55] Speaker 7: I was going to ask all that too, just so
[1:02:57] Speaker 7: particularly about your dad because you know, he's pasted and
[1:03:00] Speaker 7: I was watching the other day they showed the they
[1:03:02] Speaker 7: have a new Tiger Woods documentary this on uh this
[1:03:05] Speaker 7: out now, and yes, you know there's the kind of
[1:03:08] Speaker 7: the telling you know, you think of just the strict
[1:03:10] Speaker 7: father that's just kind of driving the kids, and your
[1:03:13] Speaker 7: dad has always kind of been just the symbol of
[1:03:15] Speaker 7: just the hard, you know, disciplinarian father. And so I
[1:03:18] Speaker 7: was just curious to know from your guys on words,
[1:03:21] Speaker 7: you know, what was that relationship like I mean, you know,
[1:03:24] Speaker 7: he's been kind of demonized in a lot of ways.
[1:03:26] Speaker 7: But since his passing in just over the years of
[1:03:29] Speaker 7: y'all have has have y'all as y'all have grown as
[1:03:31] Speaker 7: men and become fathers yourselves.
[1:03:34] Speaker 10: How is that?
[1:03:34] Speaker 6: How how do y'all look at y'all relationship with your dad.
[1:03:37] Speaker 4: Now when you realize, you know, you go back and
[1:03:39] Speaker 4: realize what he was doing was right.
[1:03:42] Speaker 11: I mean, we came from a bad neighborhood Guarantiana, and
[1:03:47] Speaker 11: he I mean he kept us out of that situation
[1:03:51] Speaker 11: by keeping us busy, keeping us rehearsing. He saw we
[1:03:54] Speaker 11: had talent, and he said, if you want to be something,
[1:03:57] Speaker 11: you got to work at And that's what he did.
[1:03:59] Speaker 11: And in those days, you know, you know her parents
[1:04:02] Speaker 11: raised kids was different.
[1:04:03] Speaker 4: You know, even your neighbors, your parents, I mean, your
[1:04:06] Speaker 4: neighbors would get you.
[1:04:07] Speaker 11: You know, that's how it was back in those days.
[1:04:09] Speaker 11: You can't do that stuff today. It's a whole different today,
[1:04:12] Speaker 11: it's different.
[1:04:13] Speaker 4: But not just the way it was back then.
[1:04:14] Speaker 9: You know, today today those jokers break their knuckles down
[1:04:19] Speaker 9: in ninety one one.
[1:04:20] Speaker 8: Yeah, something as parents and grandparents now seeing the way
[1:04:25] Speaker 8: the kids are like disciplined, Yes.
[1:04:32] Speaker 6: I called it.
[1:04:33] Speaker 1: Yeah, it was.
[1:04:34] Speaker 7: It was a different time when I look at you know,
[1:04:36] Speaker 7: just when I think about, you know, your your dad,
[1:04:38] Speaker 7: your dad's legacy, and just what he was able to
[1:04:40] Speaker 7: help y'all build. You know, it's just you know, whenever
[1:04:43] Speaker 7: I see people being real harsh about you know, men
[1:04:46] Speaker 7: of that time, I'm just like, listen, dude, Like white
[1:04:50] Speaker 7: folks just ran up in the capitol.
[1:04:52] Speaker 6: What was they doing in nineteen fifty nine?
[1:04:54] Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, Like, what would you know
[1:04:56] Speaker 1: what I'm saying? What think about what those guys.
[1:04:58] Speaker 7: Were up against back then to raise you know, you
[1:05:01] Speaker 7: know all these kids keep him out of trouble, nine
[1:05:04] Speaker 7: children and working in a steel mill, Like, come the
[1:05:07] Speaker 7: funk on, dude, Like, you know, you got to put
[1:05:09] Speaker 7: that in context.
[1:05:09] Speaker 14: You know.
[1:05:10] Speaker 6: So I was always to hear your thoughts on it.
[1:05:12] Speaker 4: When I went to the steel mail one time and
[1:05:14] Speaker 4: some where my father worked. Man, they looked up that
[1:05:17] Speaker 4: steel door and all that heat.
[1:05:19] Speaker 11: And fire key out, and I said, oh my god,
[1:05:21] Speaker 11: how does he work in a place like this all
[1:05:23] Speaker 11: the time?
[1:05:24] Speaker 4: I mean, I couldn't believe it.
[1:05:26] Speaker 14: Yeah, Jackie took us home and wanted to rehearse even more.
[1:05:32] Speaker 1: Better than being in. I don't Jackie, were you at
[1:05:39] Speaker 1: one point seriously trying to consider uh a career in
[1:05:43] Speaker 1: baseball at all?
[1:05:44] Speaker 15: Wait?
[1:05:44] Speaker 9: Wait wait, wait, wait wait wait, Jackie, back that up.
[1:05:47] Speaker 9: Not consider the white Sox was looking at him.
[1:05:50] Speaker 1: Oh wow, I didn't know that.
[1:05:55] Speaker 8: Talk about it, Jackie, Come on.
[1:05:59] Speaker 11: No matter fact, we all played baseball. We all grew
[1:06:01] Speaker 11: baseball players, all of us. And I was a short
[1:06:05] Speaker 11: stop and a picture and and they was after me
[1:06:08] Speaker 11: and and stuff like that. But you know, I think
[1:06:11] Speaker 11: I thought I made the right move by sticker with
[1:06:13] Speaker 11: my brothers, because the singing career last whatever.
[1:06:16] Speaker 4: You can sing forever, you know.
[1:06:18] Speaker 1: And you can sing with bad knees.
[1:06:24] Speaker 4: Yeah, but uh, you know I did the right thing.
[1:06:27] Speaker 4: We did the right thing to stay with the group
[1:06:29] Speaker 4: and stay with the.
[1:06:29] Speaker 2: Boys, because I would see you know often in like
[1:06:34] Speaker 2: ride on magazine or whatever the periodicals were at the
[1:06:38] Speaker 2: time of like you guys actually had your own softball team,
[1:06:42] Speaker 2: Like how how was that arranged? Like like celebrities softball
[1:06:46] Speaker 2: games versus each other would just be a thing of
[1:06:48] Speaker 2: you calling them up?
[1:06:49] Speaker 1: Or was it like some official.
[1:06:53] Speaker 11: We had some of the coldest baseball teams we had.
[1:06:57] Speaker 11: We had Willie god on our team.
[1:06:59] Speaker 10: We had uh we.
[1:07:03] Speaker 11: The US and football. We had the Colders. And all
[1:07:07] Speaker 11: those guys play baseball too, you know we don't. They
[1:07:10] Speaker 11: played college baseball. We win the championship every year.
[1:07:14] Speaker 9: So Billy Christal, Billy Christ, Billy CHRISTI, they gonna get
[1:07:18] Speaker 9: their team, Him and Rob right there and all of them.
[1:07:24] Speaker 9: The story they big, they gonna come and play us.
[1:07:32] Speaker 11: You know. You know Sam Watson, You know Sam. Anyone
[1:07:36] Speaker 11: knows Sam Watson. He's always in the ring all the
[1:07:38] Speaker 11: time of the Fighters.
[1:07:39] Speaker 8: And uh but said the words that you're not supposed
[1:07:44] Speaker 8: to say, but only he's supposed to say it.
[1:07:45] Speaker 4: He said, Sam, Yeah with the Fighters, you know.
[1:07:49] Speaker 9: Yeah, Sam was on our baseball baseball Sam is the
[1:07:52] Speaker 9: great baseball player.
[1:07:53] Speaker 4: He can play. Oh yeah, can play.
[1:07:58] Speaker 2: You know, because I would notice all your appearances on
[1:08:01] Speaker 2: Soul Train, Marl, let me talk the most junk about you.
[1:08:05] Speaker 2: Guys are sports prowess and in basketball and softball. I
[1:08:12] Speaker 2: didn't know if that was like an actual thing, Like
[1:08:14] Speaker 2: there was.
[1:08:14] Speaker 9: A no, it's serious, and then there's a there's a
[1:08:18] Speaker 9: picture somewhere. I saw Jackie playing basketball. Jackie used to
[1:08:22] Speaker 9: play Marvin gay all the time at Marvia Gaye's house.
[1:08:26] Speaker 10: Didn't you Jackie, you'll go one on one?
[1:08:28] Speaker 11: He would call me over. We played one on one.
[1:08:31] Speaker 11: He said, jack ain't paying no damn taxes and he
[1:08:38] Speaker 11: wrote a song about it. I can't pay my taxes.
[1:08:41] Speaker 1: Make me want to holler right right.
[1:08:43] Speaker 4: We used to play all the time, one on one,
[1:08:45] Speaker 4: all the time at his house.
[1:08:46] Speaker 11: He called, but he would push you around. Marvin played
[1:08:51] Speaker 11: really rough though dirty.
[1:08:54] Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, when you're in when when you get to
[1:08:58] Speaker 2: l a like who and older? Who were your peers
[1:09:03] Speaker 2: or like who would you hang with? Was it just
[1:09:06] Speaker 2: in house or did you guys have like a relationship
[1:09:09] Speaker 2: with the Silvers or anybody that was your age or anything.
[1:09:12] Speaker 11: Except we just hung together. We stayed in the recordings
[1:09:15] Speaker 11: to be all. That's all Cord Cord record even on Sundays.
[1:09:23] Speaker 9: They recorded all the time, and and then we would
[1:09:27] Speaker 9: go out and do concerts. We had a curfew, so
[1:09:30] Speaker 9: we had to be in bed at a certain time
[1:09:34] Speaker 9: and moms would come and tell our security, I know
[1:09:37] Speaker 9: my daughter is up in there with Winnam Jackson. Like
[1:09:39] Speaker 9: you said, I can guarantee you they an't way wasn't
[1:09:40] Speaker 9: name Jackson's. They might be with one of them band members,
[1:09:44] Speaker 9: but they ain't with with nothing of them.
[1:09:45] Speaker 14: Jackson's because I just did bed check and they.
[1:09:47] Speaker 11: All our very first, our very first big concert. Mm hm,
[1:09:54] Speaker 11: you know where it was, Mormon, the very first big concert.
[1:09:58] Speaker 9: You know where it was at the Forum with No.
[1:10:01] Speaker 4: I'm talking about that one, the very first big one.
[1:10:04] Speaker 4: Guess where it was, jack.
[1:10:06] Speaker 1: Philadelphia, Philadelphia Spectrum, Philadelphia.
[1:10:10] Speaker 4: He said, that's where it was, remember, man, the first
[1:10:13] Speaker 4: big start off. That's where Philadelphia. That's where it was there.
[1:10:17] Speaker 2: Okay, So there's there's a folklore tale. One of the
[1:10:22] Speaker 2: most famous graffiti writers in Philadelphia's name is Cornbread. The
[1:10:27] Speaker 2: legend of Cornbread is like the places that he would
[1:10:29] Speaker 2: tag his his name, and the reason why that Philadelphia show,
[1:10:35] Speaker 2: the reason why I know about it, even though I
[1:10:37] Speaker 2: wasn't old enough to know about it, is that somehow
[1:10:41] Speaker 2: Cornbread had managed to tag the Jackson five airplane with
[1:10:48] Speaker 2: his name, which basically set his legend into like the
[1:10:53] Speaker 2: graffiti world, like he tagged the Jackson five airplane from
[1:10:56] Speaker 2: their Philadelphia Spectrum show. Yeah, yeah, no, I mean he's
[1:11:01] Speaker 2: still living off that vocalo, right, now he's like sixty
[1:11:03] Speaker 2: three years old. He finally signed a jacket for me
[1:11:07] Speaker 2: after decades, a big and for it. I want to
[1:11:10] Speaker 2: ask about the move to Epic. You know, between there's
[1:11:15] Speaker 2: sort of that period in which past the beginning stage
[1:11:19] Speaker 2: of Motown where you guys are putting the Vegas Act together,
[1:11:23] Speaker 2: about to do the Variety Show, and of course you
[1:11:28] Speaker 2: moved to Philly International Epic. What was basically I mean,
[1:11:34] Speaker 2: were you guys trying to develop your music even before then, Like,
[1:11:40] Speaker 2: were you guys writing actively writing and producing by that
[1:11:45] Speaker 2: point or yeah, we.
[1:11:47] Speaker 11: When we learned so much, you know, by then with
[1:11:50] Speaker 11: all the Motown writers and the producers. It's like going
[1:11:54] Speaker 11: to school there anyway, because you learned so much they
[1:11:56] Speaker 11: teacher at the same time. And all the wonderful hit
[1:12:00] Speaker 11: that we had with Motown who put us on the map,
[1:12:03] Speaker 11: Barry Gordy and the whole crew and crew of writers.
[1:12:06] Speaker 4: It was just amazing with the done for us.
[1:12:08] Speaker 11: And at that time our contract was running out, we
[1:12:11] Speaker 11: felt that it was time for us to start writing
[1:12:14] Speaker 11: some of our music because at that time we felt
[1:12:17] Speaker 11: the mes was kind of young and abc and a
[1:12:20] Speaker 11: little bit and kind of kind of bubble Gummers.
[1:12:22] Speaker 4: But it was the top of music that was geared
[1:12:24] Speaker 4: to everybody to love. But we decided it's time let
[1:12:29] Speaker 4: us to start writing some music, you know.
[1:12:30] Speaker 11: So we decided to no longer side with Motown, to
[1:12:34] Speaker 11: go to another label where we can show them our
[1:12:38] Speaker 11: ability to write songs and also produced records.
[1:12:41] Speaker 4: So they put us with Gammel in Huff, you know,
[1:12:44] Speaker 4: And we were so excited to be with those guys
[1:12:46] Speaker 4: because those guys were known for writing hits on groups
[1:12:50] Speaker 4: like Teddy Pendergrass and the Old Jays.
[1:12:53] Speaker 9: You just the list goes on.
[1:12:54] Speaker 4: And on the Cowboys the Girls.
[1:12:57] Speaker 9: That's my favorite game, Cowboys the Girl.
[1:13:00] Speaker 1: But what that group.
[1:13:04] Speaker 11: And we figured that we if we get with the
[1:13:06] Speaker 11: Jackson Gid with Gambling Huff, it's over with, It's gonna
[1:13:09] Speaker 11: be a big time, you know what I'm saying.
[1:13:12] Speaker 1: So, what are your thoughts on those albums? Now?
[1:13:14] Speaker 6: Like now, over time?
[1:13:16] Speaker 4: Incredible, incredible, man, Gambling Huff.
[1:13:20] Speaker 1: We got there.
[1:13:20] Speaker 4: We spent time just talking.
[1:13:22] Speaker 10: And talking, and we call the whole album in two weeks.
[1:13:26] Speaker 7: In two weeks, man, I would say, my favorite material
[1:13:31] Speaker 7: is still I mean the Gambler stuff.
[1:13:32] Speaker 6: I mean, it's enjoy yourself and show you. I mean,
[1:13:34] Speaker 6: those are plazas.
[1:13:35] Speaker 7: But for me personally, man, I just love when y'all
[1:13:38] Speaker 7: wrote your own stuff like that was that's that's that
[1:13:40] Speaker 7: ship with jamming.
[1:13:42] Speaker 6: I just like y'all y'all doing your own material. Man,
[1:13:44] Speaker 6: that ship was just it was great.
[1:13:46] Speaker 11: So we wrote, you know, first we wrote to We
[1:13:49] Speaker 11: wrote two songs on the on the album. Then we
[1:13:53] Speaker 11: gamble wrote the rests and songs, and all of a
[1:13:55] Speaker 11: sudden they gave us a whole album.
[1:13:57] Speaker 4: Start writing because I guess.
[1:13:59] Speaker 1: I guess, yeah, yeah, I was gonna say.
[1:14:05] Speaker 2: My elementary school was right next door to Philly International,
[1:14:10] Speaker 2: So oftentimes, like first second grade, I'd see you guys
[1:14:14] Speaker 2: running to your car.
[1:14:16] Speaker 1: On Broad Street.
[1:14:17] Speaker 2: Really yeah, my I went to a performing arts school,
[1:14:21] Speaker 2: which was if Philly International, I think was three ten
[1:14:24] Speaker 2: Broad Street. My school was three thirteen, So oftentimes you'd
[1:14:29] Speaker 2: see like Teddy Pendergrad, you'd see everyone outside. But you know,
[1:14:33] Speaker 2: of course I knew when the Jacksons were in proximity
[1:14:36] Speaker 2: because every girl in that school just run outside, and
[1:14:38] Speaker 2: it's like, oh, the Jackson's must to be next door
[1:14:41] Speaker 2: or something.
[1:14:42] Speaker 1: But I asked that question about the seventies because it
[1:14:47] Speaker 1: just hit me. Can you tell me who the group
[1:14:50] Speaker 1: MDLT was? Because I collected a lot of records and
[1:14:56] Speaker 1: probably one of the highest priced forty fives that someone
[1:14:59] Speaker 1: tried to get me for it was a Jackson five
[1:15:02] Speaker 1: produced song called What's Your Game by M d l T.
[1:15:07] Speaker 9: What's Your Game?
[1:15:09] Speaker 1: It was like they were m d l T was
[1:15:11] Speaker 1: like a I think the legends that they were on
[1:15:14] Speaker 1: Ivory Tower. Yeah, Ivory Tower.
[1:15:19] Speaker 10: Like four Girls yea was my father's group.
[1:15:23] Speaker 2: Okay, so they just saw like the Dinah Ross thing.
[1:15:25] Speaker 2: They just use the and of course the Sucleite me
[1:15:28] Speaker 2: comes along. It's like, yeah, I'll pay thousand for that. Okay,
[1:15:31] Speaker 2: I get it now. So that was just on his label.
[1:15:35] Speaker 2: But you guys didn't specifically produce that single or anything.
[1:15:39] Speaker 1: Correct.
[1:15:40] Speaker 9: I don't remember producing we're doing anything? You did?
[1:15:44] Speaker 4: Yes, we did. You don't remember.
[1:15:47] Speaker 1: He's right, we did that, Okay. I at least don't
[1:15:51] Speaker 1: feel ripped off of pain for that.
[1:15:56] Speaker 9: We did.
[1:15:56] Speaker 10: Okay.
[1:15:57] Speaker 2: So Jackie, I've meant I mentioned this and and your
[1:16:02] Speaker 2: and your brother's documentary for Off the Wall that one
[1:16:09] Speaker 2: of my favorite moments, and discovering that that demo on
[1:16:15] Speaker 2: shake your body down to the ground. Was you yelling,
[1:16:19] Speaker 2: I can't wait for the begs to hear this ship?
[1:16:26] Speaker 2: Oh my god, yeah, it's my favorite thing ever. It's
[1:16:29] Speaker 2: rights right. Do you end the demo and it stops?
[1:16:32] Speaker 2: He's the bgs to hear this ship?
[1:16:34] Speaker 11: My mommy was at your house? And then that's a
[1:16:38] Speaker 11: song we were doing like half a song. We was
[1:16:40] Speaker 11: messing around this this messing around with a groove and
[1:16:44] Speaker 11: we was making up something, remember that, And I said
[1:16:47] Speaker 11: something like I can win the bgs here.
[1:16:49] Speaker 4: He's right.
[1:16:49] Speaker 18: I said that, and they caught that stuff, and I
[1:16:52] Speaker 18: staid with viral, didn't it? A lot of a lot
[1:16:54] Speaker 18: of people did with viral?
[1:16:57] Speaker 9: Yeah, Like what what were your I don't remember that.
[1:17:00] Speaker 2: I mean at that at that point, I know that
[1:17:02] Speaker 2: you had to, you know, something to prove. And this
[1:17:04] Speaker 2: is like the moment that you guys are going to
[1:17:06] Speaker 2: step to the plate and produce your own material. But
[1:17:09] Speaker 2: were you guys seriously eyeing like, Okay, they sold twelve
[1:17:12] Speaker 2: million units, that's us, Like that's what we want?
[1:17:15] Speaker 9: Like what?
[1:17:16] Speaker 1: Yeah, in your mind? Was were they the standards of
[1:17:19] Speaker 1: who to be? Like why not Earth went and Fire
[1:17:21] Speaker 1: or p Funk.
[1:17:22] Speaker 15: Or I don't know.
[1:17:24] Speaker 11: Maybe I don't know, maybe say that about the BG.
[1:17:27] Speaker 11: It just came out, BGS. Here this ship, it just happened.
[1:17:31] Speaker 4: I just named the BG.
[1:17:32] Speaker 18: It could have been I could have been just you know,
[1:17:35] Speaker 18: it just happened. It was we was in sane something
[1:17:39] Speaker 18: like the little group, just making something as we go along,
[1:17:41] Speaker 18: and I said, wait, this ship or something like that.
[1:17:44] Speaker 4: I remember something like that.
[1:17:45] Speaker 9: Yeah, okay, ironically we all get inducted into the Rock
[1:17:50] Speaker 9: and Roll Hall of Fame in nineteen ninety seven.
[1:17:53] Speaker 14: Together, oh together, all that came out b G.
[1:18:00] Speaker 2: Also, I also asked your brother Randy this question. So
[1:18:03] Speaker 2: in terms of presentation and theatrics, like, you guys definitely
[1:18:09] Speaker 2: raise the game higher. I mean, by that point in
[1:18:11] Speaker 2: seventy seven, you know, earth wind Fire is bringing theatrics
[1:18:15] Speaker 2: to the game, and p Funk definitely was bringing theatrics.
[1:18:19] Speaker 14: To the game.
[1:18:19] Speaker 2: But yeah, man, then I always wanted to know, though,
[1:18:25] Speaker 2: why was Randy the designated agitator? Like usually any explosions
[1:18:31] Speaker 2: were because of Randy either throwing you guys in a
[1:18:34] Speaker 2: pit or throwing some flash paper and exploit, Like, why
[1:18:39] Speaker 2: was he the one? Like you know, it's like you
[1:18:43] Speaker 2: guys are brothers in the first twenty three minutes and
[1:18:45] Speaker 2: then Randy does this terrorist.
[1:18:47] Speaker 1: Act like Okay, then I'm to this fire and it's
[1:18:53] Speaker 1: gonna explode and we'll have on new outfits like well.
[1:18:56] Speaker 4: Because you're right, I've never looked at it like that.
[1:18:57] Speaker 1: But you're right, though, Why was he the signated that
[1:19:00] Speaker 1: guy to do?
[1:19:03] Speaker 9: Because he was because he wasn't in the Jackson fire.
[1:19:06] Speaker 10: That's why.
[1:19:13] Speaker 1: How did you guys conceptualize those shows? Though?
[1:19:15] Speaker 3: I told you just to cry.
[1:19:16] Speaker 11: When we used to go on the road and drive
[1:19:18] Speaker 11: down and drive our driveway going out the gate heading
[1:19:21] Speaker 11: for the airport, he would cry like a baby sitting
[1:19:24] Speaker 11: the driver because he thought he was coming with us,
[1:19:26] Speaker 11: you know, so he thought.
[1:19:28] Speaker 19: He pushing the butt, he pushed the button for the
[1:19:30] Speaker 19: gate for the car to leave, did y'all y'all.
[1:19:34] Speaker 15: Didn't initiate him when he came when he finally became
[1:19:37] Speaker 15: a part, did you like, he was always there.
[1:19:42] Speaker 9: But he was around, but he was hanging around before
[1:19:45] Speaker 9: he became, you know, full member.
[1:19:48] Speaker 11: And when they became a full member. I remember doing
[1:19:51] Speaker 11: this concert one time. This is so funny, packed to
[1:19:55] Speaker 11: the rapt us all the way around, number of people.
[1:19:58] Speaker 11: So n he's on the state. He's get his shot
[1:20:00] Speaker 11: to be on the stage. And he was playing his
[1:20:03] Speaker 11: ass because he can play some Kol's bungles and all
[1:20:06] Speaker 11: that stuff.
[1:20:06] Speaker 9: You know.
[1:20:07] Speaker 11: That's all of a sudden, it's time for Randy to
[1:20:09] Speaker 11: do a solo, right, all of a sudden he gets
[1:20:12] Speaker 11: the spotlight get on it for him to play and.
[1:20:15] Speaker 14: Do a solo right right, and the music breaks.
[1:20:24] Speaker 4: And Randy from up.
[1:20:25] Speaker 11: Randy looked up and so all these people start looking
[1:20:28] Speaker 11: around around like this, around seeing all this.
[1:20:30] Speaker 4: He forgot his solo. He did plays play keep looking
[1:20:37] Speaker 4: around all these twenty thousand people in there. Oh man,
[1:20:42] Speaker 4: yeah he didn't play man. Then he came up later. Yeah,
[1:20:46] Speaker 4: he came in later. Yeah.
[1:20:48] Speaker 10: Now I'm gonna tell you a story.
[1:20:49] Speaker 9: On the thirtieth anniversary, was doing you know, Shakey Body,
[1:20:54] Speaker 9: and we went to one corner of the stage. We
[1:20:56] Speaker 9: run to the other corner of the stage. So we
[1:20:58] Speaker 9: ran to the y'all didn't even know this was happening
[1:21:01] Speaker 9: on stage. We ran to the corner stage and we
[1:21:04] Speaker 9: do our break and we freeze and were just waiting there,
[1:21:08] Speaker 9: waiting there, waiting there, and Michael goes, what's next, what's next?
[1:21:12] Speaker 10: I said, Michael, you're supposed.
[1:21:13] Speaker 9: To count it off.
[1:21:14] Speaker 3: What this is going on?
[1:21:18] Speaker 10: This is going on stage and you didn't even know it.
[1:21:24] Speaker 1: Oh he didn't know the next cue?
[1:21:26] Speaker 9: No, the next cue was here. He's about to go
[1:21:30] Speaker 9: to start the band again. Oh, and he's telling us
[1:21:33] Speaker 9: what's next? What's next?
[1:21:38] Speaker 4: That's for television, what's the next? I remember that?
[1:21:42] Speaker 2: Yeah, so for for those for those shows, though, how
[1:21:47] Speaker 2: much preparation goes into that, and like who decides what
[1:21:51] Speaker 2: musicians come aboard? Who decides like Duck Henning is now
[1:21:56] Speaker 2: I'm assuming that's Duck Henning that helped the.
[1:22:00] Speaker 9: First The only thing Doug Henny did, what's the what's
[1:22:04] Speaker 9: the magic?
[1:22:05] Speaker 1: That's all he did, even introducing magic to a show
[1:22:09] Speaker 1: like who who? Like what what's the pre meeting? The
[1:22:12] Speaker 1: pre meeting? Uh situation like before that, even.
[1:22:17] Speaker 9: Before Jackie you you might not know. Before you all came,
[1:22:21] Speaker 9: Michael and I went and we met with Doug Henny
[1:22:23] Speaker 9: to look at all whatever magic he had, and we
[1:22:27] Speaker 9: picked the one.
[1:22:29] Speaker 10: We picked the one that.
[1:22:32] Speaker 9: Goes up and explosion there that that would work for
[1:22:34] Speaker 9: the show. And then you all came. The second time
[1:22:37] Speaker 9: we used making it wasn't Doug Canny Jackie?
[1:22:39] Speaker 10: Who was?
[1:22:40] Speaker 9: I forgot who.
[1:22:41] Speaker 19: He's on the Come on Copperfield, David Copper He's right right,
[1:22:54] Speaker 19: he's the one.
[1:22:55] Speaker 1: But what was the decision to add those elements to this?
[1:23:00] Speaker 1: That just came out of nowhere?
[1:23:04] Speaker 11: Because you know, at that particular time, a lot of
[1:23:06] Speaker 11: acts were doing something similar to that. You know, they
[1:23:09] Speaker 11: had something special like so like an illusion or something
[1:23:14] Speaker 11: like that, right, yeah, And we decided we add this
[1:23:18] Speaker 11: to the show.
[1:23:19] Speaker 4: It's going to be something incredible, you know, you know
[1:23:21] Speaker 4: when I.
[1:23:21] Speaker 11: Show, because we we've always had a high energy type show,
[1:23:27] Speaker 11: you know, okay, people dancing and a lot of a
[1:23:31] Speaker 11: lot of energy and pretty much a nice sized production.
[1:23:35] Speaker 11: So we decided we add this to the show. It
[1:23:37] Speaker 11: would just go over the top, you know, right, That's
[1:23:40] Speaker 11: how and that's how we were thinking.
[1:23:42] Speaker 2: I was going to say, I'll let my look, I'll
[1:23:44] Speaker 2: let the listeners know that, especially watching all this as
[1:23:49] Speaker 2: like a nine ten year older, no one has utilized
[1:23:53] Speaker 2: slow motion effects better than the Jackson's. Like practically every
[1:23:58] Speaker 2: variety show they were ever on, there's a movement. I mean,
[1:24:01] Speaker 2: I thought you guys could fly because there's always some
[1:24:04] Speaker 2: point in that performance where you guys either running or
[1:24:08] Speaker 2: airlifting like seven feet up in the air, and I
[1:24:10] Speaker 2: was like, Yo, the Jacksons could really fly like that.
[1:24:14] Speaker 2: I didn't realize untill later that you know, that's called
[1:24:16] Speaker 2: post editing. But I just thought, you guys at magic
[1:24:20] Speaker 2: flying ability.
[1:24:21] Speaker 7: I want to know how you guys, you know we
[1:24:24] Speaker 7: were talking about we were talking about the CBS years.
[1:24:27] Speaker 7: How when you guys left Motown and you know, how
[1:24:31] Speaker 7: did y'all kind of repair that relationship with Barry Gordy
[1:24:34] Speaker 7: later on? Like how did he, you know, take y'all
[1:24:36] Speaker 7: leaving and you know, where's the Joab's relationship at with him?
[1:24:39] Speaker 9: Now?
[1:24:42] Speaker 10: We're cool, always.
[1:24:45] Speaker 14: Cool.
[1:24:46] Speaker 9: You know, business is business. Just a business decision, and
[1:24:49] Speaker 9: we were young. It was a decision that my father
[1:24:52] Speaker 9: actually you know, you know, made and and so we
[1:24:57] Speaker 9: moved forward on it. But I think one of the
[1:25:01] Speaker 9: I remember someone telling me, Jackie, you might have that.
[1:25:05] Speaker 9: Barry Gordy said, the worst thing he ever did is let.
[1:25:07] Speaker 10: The Jackson five get away from Motown.
[1:25:10] Speaker 14: Man.
[1:25:12] Speaker 2: Yeah, And there was no like space or room for
[1:25:17] Speaker 2: any discussion of Okay, how many songs do you want
[1:25:19] Speaker 2: to produce? Or or I'll call your bluff and see
[1:25:24] Speaker 2: if you guys would like Did he really think you
[1:25:26] Speaker 2: guys wouldn't leave or anything.
[1:25:28] Speaker 12: I don't know the details, but I think basically he
[1:25:31] Speaker 12: felt that it wasn't broke. Why try to fix something
[1:25:34] Speaker 12: that's working, you know? So basically I don't think he
[1:25:41] Speaker 12: had that. We had never wrote or produced anything publicly,
[1:25:46] Speaker 12: so I think he just felt why changed things?
[1:25:51] Speaker 2: Yeah, I have questions about the Triumph album because that's where, individually,
[1:26:01] Speaker 2: you guys really came into your own as far as
[1:26:04] Speaker 2: songwriting and producing is concerned. Side note, Jackie, you you've
[1:26:08] Speaker 2: actually written my favorite Jackson song of all time, like
[1:26:12] Speaker 2: Your Ways is like my all time favorite song in life.
[1:26:17] Speaker 2: Oh oh god, yeah, no, no, no doubt. I mean,
[1:26:21] Speaker 2: no offense to you other Jackson's, but you know that's
[1:26:26] Speaker 2: you go where you go off all your ways, that's
[1:26:28] Speaker 2: the way I go up forgive it up? I love
[1:26:30] Speaker 2: I know Marlin, like that's you you sing in lead
[1:26:32] Speaker 2: with Michael on that one man. I love, I love
[1:26:34] Speaker 2: that song man.
[1:26:35] Speaker 7: And I thought y'all really was y'all was that in
[1:26:38] Speaker 7: sence y'all trying to go for kind of the yacht
[1:26:40] Speaker 7: rock kind of I guess that you know that kind
[1:26:42] Speaker 7: of song.
[1:26:42] Speaker 9: No, it just said that's what the song called for,
[1:26:45] Speaker 9: So that's what you get it.
[1:26:47] Speaker 1: I love it.
[1:26:48] Speaker 9: There's the magic that happens in the studio when you're working.
[1:26:52] Speaker 9: All of a sudden somebody hit you with someone the
[1:26:54] Speaker 9: song needs this, bam, so you do it. You know,
[1:26:58] Speaker 9: it's it's uh, you know, it's just work. It's just
[1:27:03] Speaker 9: you know, you can't go in and say I'm gonna
[1:27:05] Speaker 9: do this, I'm gonna do that, I'm gonna do that.
[1:27:06] Speaker 9: It doesn't work that way.
[1:27:08] Speaker 14: You know.
[1:27:08] Speaker 9: It's it's a feel listen. You know. That's why I
[1:27:11] Speaker 9: try to tell some of the kids today. And with
[1:27:14] Speaker 9: all these electronics that they use, and I tell people,
[1:27:17] Speaker 9: how are they supposed to get the sound the way
[1:27:20] Speaker 9: that instrument really sound if you never heard that instrument? Right?
[1:27:24] Speaker 4: And and and and these these these three albums that
[1:27:27] Speaker 4: were just released a couple of days ago.
[1:27:30] Speaker 1: Mm hmmm.
[1:27:31] Speaker 11: They have great songs on the songs that never get
[1:27:34] Speaker 11: that attention, you know what I'm saying. But your Ways
[1:27:37] Speaker 11: now they sticking those out and they did some remixing.
[1:27:39] Speaker 11: They sound great, really, I mean.
[1:27:42] Speaker 9: It's the blues Away used one of my favorite Yeah,
[1:27:44] Speaker 9: they sound great and that's what you get for being
[1:27:48] Speaker 9: polite and things.
[1:27:49] Speaker 4: Yeah, that's on there too. Yeah, all that stuff here.
[1:27:51] Speaker 4: It sounds great. Different mixes on it.
[1:27:54] Speaker 1: How do you guys write the songs together?
[1:27:56] Speaker 9: Well, we started, we started writing. We started writing the
[1:27:59] Speaker 9: deaths in the album when Michael was doing the Wizz.
[1:28:04] Speaker 2: You know, That's why I wanted to know, how is
[1:28:06] Speaker 2: it like? How what was the process of doing Destiny
[1:28:08] Speaker 2: while he was doing the Whiz? Did it come out
[1:28:10] Speaker 2: before or after?
[1:28:12] Speaker 1: Wells was after the Whiz? Correct?
[1:28:15] Speaker 9: Yes, right, we were getting the studio and just start
[1:28:18] Speaker 9: writing songs. We you know, meet up at noon and
[1:28:21] Speaker 9: we're going to spend you know, four or five five
[1:28:23] Speaker 9: hours in the studio and we're going to come up
[1:28:25] Speaker 9: with some stuff and write some songs.
[1:28:27] Speaker 11: And sometimes we do. Tito had this big camper, you know,
[1:28:32] Speaker 11: with the three stooges on it. We would take it
[1:28:34] Speaker 11: out to the beach and sit by the ocean and
[1:28:38] Speaker 11: write lyrics. And we would do things like that and
[1:28:41] Speaker 11: go out in different plant areas and go in to
[1:28:44] Speaker 11: camper and just write lyrics and come back, you know,
[1:28:47] Speaker 11: spend about five or six hours out you know, the
[1:28:50] Speaker 11: Pacific ocean, at the beach and park the camper sideways
[1:28:54] Speaker 11: and just look at the ways, and we have food
[1:28:56] Speaker 11: in their sandwiches, and we write lyrics and write songs. Yeah,
[1:29:02] Speaker 11: they go back in the studio record because we all
[1:29:04] Speaker 11: had a whole recording.
[1:29:07] Speaker 7: Oh okay, gotcha, man, I must know for all the
[1:29:10] Speaker 7: people in my generation. So this song came out. I
[1:29:13] Speaker 7: guess I was four the video for can You Feel It?
[1:29:18] Speaker 1: Dude? That was the.
[1:29:19] Speaker 6: Scariest, most awesome.
[1:29:22] Speaker 1: Can I piggyback on top of that? On top of that?
[1:29:26] Speaker 1: See you were four with can You Feel It?
[1:29:28] Speaker 2: But try explaining to a seven year old this reflection
[1:29:32] Speaker 2: ship for blaming on the boogie, which absolutely scared the
[1:29:36] Speaker 2: ship out of me as a kid because Soul Train
[1:29:38] Speaker 2: would come on at one in the morning. So watching
[1:29:40] Speaker 2: you guys with this reflective ship and like here my
[1:29:44] Speaker 2: dad's musicians say, like, oh, that's what the anassd trip is,
[1:29:46] Speaker 2: like a mere Like again, I know you guys are
[1:29:50] Speaker 2: one step ahead of technology with everything that y'all have done,
[1:29:53] Speaker 2: But what was I mean?
[1:29:55] Speaker 1: Yeah, blame it on the boogie and can you Feel It?
[1:30:00] Speaker 1: They were big right, Yeah, I was like the big
[1:30:04] Speaker 1: niggas just frequently I could run away from it.
[1:30:14] Speaker 2: I think by that point you guys are in your
[1:30:16] Speaker 2: mid twenties, almost thirty, so it's different. But when you're
[1:30:22] Speaker 2: you're watching, when you're watching under the age of ten,
[1:30:25] Speaker 2: it's a whole another.
[1:30:26] Speaker 14: It's a different thing.
[1:30:27] Speaker 1: Yeah, Blame It on the Boogie used to actually scare me,
[1:30:30] Speaker 1: like just to watch because I couldn't understand this whole
[1:30:33] Speaker 1: reflection thing and free it.
[1:30:37] Speaker 8: That scared me became Michael with thrilling.
[1:30:40] Speaker 1: Thanks Thriller.
[1:30:42] Speaker 2: We were after scaring us for two years with that
[1:30:46] Speaker 2: ship as big as marbles chain, said Michael. And don't
[1:30:51] Speaker 2: stop to get enough, like we were used to it
[1:30:54] Speaker 2: at the time. But yeah, even when making Okay, so
[1:30:58] Speaker 2: in doing the Blame It on the Boogie video, was
[1:31:00] Speaker 2: that just like fifteen minutes out of your life?
[1:31:02] Speaker 9: Like what do we do?
[1:31:03] Speaker 1: We go over there, we dance, Okay, that's it, like
[1:31:05] Speaker 1: and those are.
[1:31:06] Speaker 4: Just effects we put on there afterwards?
[1:31:08] Speaker 1: You know, you know how long did that whole process
[1:31:11] Speaker 1: take in Like just to record you just did like
[1:31:13] Speaker 1: a couple of takes of it and then that was it. Yeah.
[1:31:15] Speaker 9: Yeah, all the all the work is really done in
[1:31:17] Speaker 9: the editing room on a lot of those videos. Watch it,
[1:31:24] Speaker 9: and it is done on a greens A lot of
[1:31:26] Speaker 9: stuff is done on a green screen or a chroma key,
[1:31:29] Speaker 9: whatever you want to call it, right, Yes, and I
[1:31:33] Speaker 9: mean today they have it a lot easier. You can
[1:31:35] Speaker 9: do stuff on your computer and everything is at your fingertips.
[1:31:38] Speaker 9: But it wasn't that way back in the day, not
[1:31:41] Speaker 9: at all.
[1:31:42] Speaker 2: Who chose the musician personnel for those records? Because you
[1:31:46] Speaker 2: guys had like the monsters, you had like feeling gains,
[1:31:49] Speaker 2: Nathan Watts and great feeling gains. Yeah, explain work with
[1:31:53] Speaker 2: great feeling gains.
[1:31:55] Speaker 4: Those guys basically hung out with her. They were like
[1:31:57] Speaker 4: trends of ours.
[1:31:57] Speaker 9: We hung out.
[1:31:58] Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, we hung out a lot together, all of us. Williams,
[1:32:05] Speaker 4: Ray Parker all the show. We all hang out. We
[1:32:10] Speaker 4: all hung out together.
[1:32:13] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[1:32:13] Speaker 9: Ray Parker played on a lot of Jackson's material.
[1:32:17] Speaker 2: You know David Williams, Yeah, he's David Is I feel
[1:32:22] Speaker 2: like an extension of I mean, he's Billy Preston as
[1:32:25] Speaker 2: far as I'm concerned.
[1:32:26] Speaker 1: To you, guys, Beatles like his guitar sound is like.
[1:32:29] Speaker 9: It is people even our band members. Man, David got
[1:32:33] Speaker 9: some bad guitar leagues. You know, how did he get there?
[1:32:36] Speaker 9: I said, we we told David what we wanted him
[1:32:41] Speaker 9: to play. So so we we come up with a
[1:32:44] Speaker 9: guitar in our head, and we tell him how to
[1:32:48] Speaker 9: play it and how we wanted to sound, and and
[1:32:51] Speaker 9: then we go back and what made that? David's the
[1:32:56] Speaker 9: guitar playing They already had bite but to make, but
[1:32:59] Speaker 9: to make it even stronger than what it was we were.
[1:33:04] Speaker 10: He would he was a massive locking it down, locking it.
[1:33:08] Speaker 10: He wouldn't lock it, but.
[1:33:15] Speaker 4: He just like he would bite it when he played
[1:33:17] Speaker 4: like he's like he's pulling the strings.
[1:33:21] Speaker 1: Sounds like that.
[1:33:23] Speaker 10: Okay, David, we gotta do another take.
[1:33:24] Speaker 9: Okay, wait a minute, let me get a pizza of
[1:33:26] Speaker 9: my chicken. What he has some fried chicken on the side.
[1:33:37] Speaker 14: He liked to get these fingers.
[1:33:39] Speaker 1: An, I know what I want to ask. Okay, I
[1:33:42] Speaker 1: cheat it. I have the sim so I've heard it.
[1:33:47] Speaker 1: I gotta know.
[1:33:49] Speaker 2: Okay, I'm assuming that because of how time has to
[1:33:54] Speaker 2: be edited so that an entire album side can fit.
[1:33:59] Speaker 2: Jackie on wondering who why was Michael's bridge taken out?
[1:34:07] Speaker 1: Was it just to cut? Was it just to cut
[1:34:11] Speaker 1: or edit so that that.
[1:34:15] Speaker 9: Let me explain what you tell. So the listener is
[1:34:17] Speaker 9: gonna stand back. If you had too much low in
[1:34:21] Speaker 9: and you try to master it, it'll spread and eat
[1:34:24] Speaker 9: up more of the record. You have to master and
[1:34:28] Speaker 9: get the right sounds and get everything. It's not that
[1:34:30] Speaker 9: way today, but you know, and we go to Bernie
[1:34:34] Speaker 9: Grub and mastering all he did all the mastering, and
[1:34:39] Speaker 9: a lot of times we'd be in the studio. I mean,
[1:34:42] Speaker 9: how many minutes is it? You know, because we only
[1:34:45] Speaker 9: can put so many minutes on a record. Yeah, yeah,
[1:34:48] Speaker 9: and if you got to sell, if you got a
[1:34:50] Speaker 9: record like Shake your Body with a lot of low end,
[1:34:53] Speaker 9: then your minutes get less because it's gonna eat up
[1:34:56] Speaker 9: more space. And so we will always keep track of
[1:34:59] Speaker 9: the time. Oh how much time that we had to
[1:35:02] Speaker 9: put on there and get in there, and sometimes we
[1:35:04] Speaker 9: had to make edits. That's right, so it'll fit.
[1:35:08] Speaker 2: So my question is though, I mean, you know, walk
[1:35:13] Speaker 2: right Now is a guardiange Wan time song seven minutes right,
[1:35:19] Speaker 2: Like why not edit from walk right Now instead of
[1:35:21] Speaker 2: taking like Michael's part out of wondering?
[1:35:25] Speaker 1: Who?
[1:35:25] Speaker 2: I mean, no one misses it because no one's ever
[1:35:28] Speaker 2: heard it. But I thought that was a very curious
[1:35:30] Speaker 2: edit and always wondered like.
[1:35:33] Speaker 4: Why did you take his part out?
[1:35:34] Speaker 2: Well, you could have saved twenty three minutes. You could
[1:35:38] Speaker 2: have shaved twenty three seconds from walk right now.
[1:35:41] Speaker 19: But instead you don't know that answer, No, Jackie, don't
[1:35:47] Speaker 19: know that.
[1:35:50] Speaker 9: It just happened. We weren't filling it and it was
[1:35:54] Speaker 9: just happening. But on Walk right now, we wanted to
[1:35:57] Speaker 9: capture it. Walk right now anyway, but we uh, we
[1:36:09] Speaker 9: had the percussionist of Pauline or the Costa you said, Uh,
[1:36:14] Speaker 9: it used to come in the studio and he have all.
[1:36:16] Speaker 10: His toys around him and all that stuff, right, and
[1:36:19] Speaker 10: so he's.
[1:36:19] Speaker 9: Trying to get some sound. But yes, and he would
[1:36:23] Speaker 9: be laughing playing but he can play his rump off
[1:36:26] Speaker 9: and uh, and we want to make sure that we
[1:36:29] Speaker 9: kept all the stuff. He did keep all the stuff
[1:36:32] Speaker 9: and on walk right now, what we one of the
[1:36:36] Speaker 9: things we did is we took the tape. We splice it,
[1:36:39] Speaker 9: and we took the tape and we played it backwards.
[1:36:42] Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, so we because you.
[1:36:44] Speaker 9: Know, computers today you can do whatever you want to do,
[1:36:46] Speaker 9: but back in those days, but when you do that,
[1:36:48] Speaker 9: you've got to make sure that it's insanc. You gotta
[1:36:51] Speaker 9: be on the downbeat, and it takes. It took a
[1:36:57] Speaker 9: while for us to get that down just the way
[1:37:00] Speaker 9: we wanted so it could come right on the down boundary.
[1:37:02] Speaker 9: It wasn't something that just happened like that. And we're
[1:37:06] Speaker 9: breathing over the over the engineer to make sure he's
[1:37:09] Speaker 9: splicing at the right time, right spot, because you don't
[1:37:11] Speaker 9: get a chance, second chance right exactly, you know, And
[1:37:15] Speaker 9: he's nervous and get the razor blade and you know,
[1:37:19] Speaker 9: then Spice put it all back together and we listened
[1:37:22] Speaker 9: to it. It ain't to down be okay. We got
[1:37:26] Speaker 9: to come back reverse and put him you know, So
[1:37:30] Speaker 9: it took.
[1:37:31] Speaker 2: It took some time, you know what I mean, right,
[1:37:32] Speaker 2: you know, No, I totally look Steve, I'm surprised Steve's
[1:37:36] Speaker 2: not weighing in. Probably of any album that I've studied,
[1:37:40] Speaker 2: the mixing and mastering of is probably the Triumph record.
[1:37:44] Speaker 1: I asked, uh, well, yeah, the last couple of years
[1:37:48] Speaker 1: of my life have been.
[1:37:51] Speaker 2: You know, yeah, for my fortieth I asked back when
[1:37:55] Speaker 2: Nellie Reid was president of EPIC, if I could, if
[1:37:58] Speaker 2: you could send me all the all the the stems
[1:38:02] Speaker 2: so I could study, and yeah, walk Right Now had
[1:38:06] Speaker 2: a lot of tracks on it, even that part with
[1:38:10] Speaker 2: Da Costa's solo with all those percussion things like just
[1:38:15] Speaker 2: the pain sticking, and you guys did it without pro.
[1:38:17] Speaker 1: Tools, so yeah, yeah, I know you guys had to
[1:38:23] Speaker 1: make that ship up. Marlon.
[1:38:26] Speaker 2: By this point, also you were doing producing yourself, working
[1:38:31] Speaker 2: on a Betty Wright's record, in addition your sister Janet
[1:38:36] Speaker 2: working on her. Like, what can you talk about your
[1:38:39] Speaker 2: first four rays into outside producing?
[1:38:42] Speaker 9: Well, don't stand another chance? Is is a song that
[1:38:45] Speaker 9: Jump Barnes and I wrote?
[1:38:46] Speaker 1: And can you also explain the cheryline connection with that.
[1:38:51] Speaker 9: Because there's no Shirlene connection.
[1:38:56] Speaker 2: Well, the I have a track of of a Sheerln
[1:39:02] Speaker 2: song singing the same rhythm track, but just new lyrics
[1:39:06] Speaker 2: of it. I never understood the difference between I've never
[1:39:10] Speaker 2: heard that. Yeah, it's called.
[1:39:11] Speaker 4: Love, that's ques love. Chris got stuff you don't even have.
[1:39:21] Speaker 9: Did you have been up on Mars?
[1:39:25] Speaker 1: I actually asked.
[1:39:27] Speaker 2: I was confused about it, and Jimmy Jim had told
[1:39:30] Speaker 2: me there's yeah, there's a song that came out on
[1:39:34] Speaker 2: on her Instant not the Instant Love album.
[1:39:36] Speaker 1: But it's called Love Love Rush Love Rush. It's on
[1:39:42] Speaker 1: the Preppy album.
[1:39:43] Speaker 2: So I wanted to know, if you like, what was
[1:39:46] Speaker 2: what was the working relationship with John Barnes as far
[1:39:48] Speaker 2: as putting that song together.
[1:39:52] Speaker 9: We just came in and John John was playing this
[1:39:56] Speaker 9: song and you wanted me to do the lyrics and
[1:40:00] Speaker 9: and so I said, yeah, let's get it done.
[1:40:02] Speaker 10: Let's do it.
[1:40:02] Speaker 9: And so we worked on worked on it together. John
[1:40:05] Speaker 9: and John, John Barnes and I used to hang.
[1:40:07] Speaker 10: Out all the time. He used to come over to
[1:40:09] Speaker 10: the house all the time.
[1:40:10] Speaker 9: We're just start writing stuff and doing stuff.
[1:40:13] Speaker 1: And working with with Betty Wright also that process.
[1:40:16] Speaker 9: Betty, Betty is a Betty is a great person. She's ah,
[1:40:20] Speaker 9: you know, rest in peace. She just passed away, right,
[1:40:24] Speaker 9: but she she was. She's a great woman. She's a
[1:40:27] Speaker 9: great singer too. And on that album, Luther did a
[1:40:30] Speaker 9: lot of background stuff on that album before people knew
[1:40:33] Speaker 9: who Luther Vandross was, you know. And I had a
[1:40:37] Speaker 9: great time in the studio working with Betty. And you know,
[1:40:40] Speaker 9: she's funny, she's she's a vocal coach as well. Uh,
[1:40:45] Speaker 9: you know, and Betty knew every damn body you know,
[1:40:48] Speaker 9: So when you needed something, she's a don't worry, I
[1:40:51] Speaker 9: got it. You know, we're calling people to do stuff
[1:40:53] Speaker 9: for us, and the end, uh. I called in John
[1:40:57] Speaker 9: Barnes to come in because we had this band that
[1:41:01] Speaker 9: was doing these tracks with us, and and the tracks
[1:41:04] Speaker 9: kept swimming and the drama just couldn't keep time. And
[1:41:08] Speaker 9: so the Limb machine, the drum limb machine had just
[1:41:15] Speaker 9: come out, right, So I told John to stop at
[1:41:19] Speaker 9: my house and grab my drum limb machine, because you know,
[1:41:23] Speaker 9: I knew how to program that that machine to make
[1:41:26] Speaker 9: drums sound like to make to make them sound like
[1:41:32] Speaker 9: rest wrong, like real, like like real, real drums.
[1:41:35] Speaker 10: And that's the whole key.
[1:41:36] Speaker 9: I don't want to take it.
[1:41:36] Speaker 2: Please, actually, Jackie for you as well, I know that
[1:41:41] Speaker 2: your solo album came out in seventy three. Are you
[1:41:44] Speaker 2: Are you even aware that Is It Him or Me?
[1:41:47] Speaker 2: Is kind of held up in high regard and in
[1:41:51] Speaker 2: sort of hip hop circles.
[1:41:53] Speaker 1: That's kind of a.
[1:41:55] Speaker 2: Well because it has a drum, a famous drum break
[1:41:57] Speaker 2: on it that you know, an obscure album can suddenly
[1:42:01] Speaker 2: become like uh no, no, no, no, it wasn't aware
[1:42:06] Speaker 2: in active Okay, Yeah, I was going to say, like
[1:42:09] Speaker 2: is it him or me? But I wanted to know
[1:42:12] Speaker 2: about that song?
[1:42:13] Speaker 1: Is that to you?
[1:42:14] Speaker 11: Just like it's funny you say that because I noticed
[1:42:18] Speaker 11: my boys. I got twin boys here, they're very young, and.
[1:42:22] Speaker 4: Over the last two weeks they've been playing that a
[1:42:24] Speaker 4: lot in the house and I was hearing it, you know,
[1:42:27] Speaker 4: I was upstairs. I was here, who's that singing? And
[1:42:30] Speaker 4: it was me and you know, and my boys are
[1:42:32] Speaker 4: like they're seven years old.
[1:42:34] Speaker 15: You know.
[1:42:34] Speaker 11: It's twin boys, and they play all of our all
[1:42:37] Speaker 11: of our music, all right, But all of a sudden,
[1:42:40] Speaker 11: they was playing my solo album. I haven't heard that
[1:42:43] Speaker 11: stuff in about twenty years, my solo stuff.
[1:42:46] Speaker 3: Maybe longer than that.
[1:42:47] Speaker 11: And it was planning and I was really I was
[1:42:50] Speaker 11: really grooving off of it, you know, thanks to them,
[1:42:52] Speaker 11: but just bringing you know, to my attention.
[1:42:55] Speaker 4: It sounds great, you.
[1:42:56] Speaker 11: Know, yeah, a lot a lot of time when I
[1:42:59] Speaker 11: toured Aspect, how come you don't do these songs? You know,
[1:43:03] Speaker 11: when I do the Meet and Wed, how come you're
[1:43:05] Speaker 11: not doing these songs?
[1:43:06] Speaker 15: You know?
[1:43:08] Speaker 1: For again, for hip hop producers, like that album is one.
[1:43:13] Speaker 4: Of the you know, yeah, it's one of those things that's.
[1:43:17] Speaker 2: One of yeah, that just caught on. So for hip
[1:43:19] Speaker 2: hop collectors, like is it Him or Me? Is like
[1:43:22] Speaker 2: one of our one of our our favorite songs. But
[1:43:26] Speaker 2: actually for the both of you, with you Marlon and
[1:43:29] Speaker 2: with you Jackie working on Baby Tonight and your album
[1:43:34] Speaker 2: was a be the one, what was what was that
[1:43:37] Speaker 2: process like, like finally working on your solo albums in
[1:43:42] Speaker 2: that time period like after the after the Victory album
[1:43:45] Speaker 2: and and those things, like, what was what was that
[1:43:48] Speaker 2: process like for you working on those albums?
[1:43:51] Speaker 9: For me, it was, well, I had a studio in
[1:43:55] Speaker 9: the back of my house, so I'll get up in
[1:43:57] Speaker 9: pajamas and just going to studios, spin off on a
[1:44:00] Speaker 9: practice almost all night there and and just come up
[1:44:04] Speaker 9: with a bunch of stuff or you know, in the
[1:44:07] Speaker 9: studio and there's a lot of stuff that I have
[1:44:12] Speaker 9: that was never released or you know, hasn't been out,
[1:44:16] Speaker 9: and uh some good stuff too.
[1:44:17] Speaker 10: I think I was playing some of some of it
[1:44:20] Speaker 10: the other day, and.
[1:44:22] Speaker 9: You know, you've been doing it all your life, so
[1:44:24] Speaker 9: it's almost like second nature is not something you know
[1:44:29] Speaker 9: that you whoa.
[1:44:30] Speaker 10: It's like, Okay, got to get another project.
[1:44:32] Speaker 9: Done, you got to do this. I mean, we grew
[1:44:35] Speaker 9: up in the studio, we from from young kids to
[1:44:39] Speaker 9: to now. So when you get in the studio, you
[1:44:42] Speaker 9: you pretty much know the ins and out. You know,
[1:44:44] Speaker 9: you how to work the boards, how to engineer this stuff.
[1:44:48] Speaker 9: You know what you're looking for. So it was it
[1:44:51] Speaker 9: wasn't it wasn't that difficult. But it's fun, especially when
[1:44:57] Speaker 9: you start working on some stuff for you for yourself.
[1:45:00] Speaker 9: You know, you try to make it fun, but you
[1:45:02] Speaker 9: want to make sure, you know, you try to capture what.
[1:45:05] Speaker 10: You're looking for. But it was, it wasn't that difficult.
[1:45:08] Speaker 10: I mean, you pretty much use.
[1:45:09] Speaker 9: The same guys that you always used on the Destiny.
[1:45:11] Speaker 9: You call in Greg Field and Games to play some stuff,
[1:45:14] Speaker 9: David Williams to play some licks for you, some awesome
[1:45:17] Speaker 9: stuff that you want to do. You know, you get
[1:45:19] Speaker 9: with Jerry Hale or somebody and give them the horned
[1:45:23] Speaker 9: links you want to go right out the chart to do.
[1:45:26] Speaker 4: Let me in on this.
[1:45:27] Speaker 11: And one thing about these these artists that we had,
[1:45:31] Speaker 11: these these you know, like I said before, these artists,
[1:45:35] Speaker 11: they they hung around us as friends, so they know
[1:45:38] Speaker 11: everything about us.
[1:45:39] Speaker 4: They know exactly what we were looking for.
[1:45:41] Speaker 14: Uh.
[1:45:41] Speaker 11: They were friends of all. We hung out together, and
[1:45:44] Speaker 11: we we went to dinner together. We did a lot
[1:45:46] Speaker 11: of things. Matter of fact, they were our age. I
[1:45:48] Speaker 11: mean they grew up with us, so everything came in
[1:45:52] Speaker 11: the nature. It was easy, you know, quite easy.
[1:45:55] Speaker 2: I was going to say, Marlon, one of one of
[1:45:57] Speaker 2: the bands that I like is is Critical and I
[1:46:00] Speaker 2: know that. Yeah, Fred Fred Mayer.
[1:46:05] Speaker 1: The album with you?
[1:46:06] Speaker 11: What was it?
[1:46:07] Speaker 1: What was it like working with them?
[1:46:08] Speaker 9: Fred was cool because it was my first time. Fred
[1:46:11] Speaker 9: is One turned me onto the AD one. I don't
[1:46:13] Speaker 9: know if you're familiar with the add one drums drum kit?
[1:46:18] Speaker 9: Is it?
[1:46:19] Speaker 10: Yeah?
[1:46:19] Speaker 9: It's the same kid that Phil Collins use on I
[1:46:23] Speaker 9: can feel it in the air tonight.
[1:46:26] Speaker 10: Yeah, is that is that sounding?
[1:46:30] Speaker 9: And fred Fred Turm on that And a matter of fact,
[1:46:32] Speaker 9: I bought one and we came up and we wrote
[1:46:36] Speaker 9: a lot of stuff together. This I like screaty polity
[1:46:39] Speaker 9: today you be doing your stuff? Huh.
[1:46:45] Speaker 15: Like he.
[1:46:48] Speaker 4: Had a sound.
[1:46:54] Speaker 8: I got a whole scrits. I got to write that
[1:46:56] Speaker 8: one down to.
[1:46:59] Speaker 7: We talked about them on another episode. I can't remember
[1:47:01] Speaker 7: it was. We went kind of deeply on them.
[1:47:04] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[1:47:05] Speaker 2: I was going to say, no, we're not just thriller
[1:47:07] Speaker 2: bandwagoners like we're you know we we we know the
[1:47:11] Speaker 2: whole spectrum of the entire work of you know, all
[1:47:14] Speaker 2: all nine of you. Actually, wait a minute, we're talking
[1:47:18] Speaker 2: about scary videos. The one we never mentioned it was
[1:47:22] Speaker 2: freaking torture.
[1:47:23] Speaker 6: Oh yeah, I yeah, I didn't. I didn't watch that one. Yeah,
[1:47:29] Speaker 6: I didn't watch that one with.
[1:47:30] Speaker 1: Jackie the Eye in the HND. Why that was.
[1:47:39] Speaker 10: To Torture is a great song?
[1:47:42] Speaker 1: No, it was. It was a great song. But now
[1:47:44] Speaker 1: I just think of and like the Slime.
[1:47:49] Speaker 4: Story.
[1:47:50] Speaker 11: We're on the Victory tour right the very beginning of
[1:47:54] Speaker 11: the Victory Tour, and at the time I was dating
[1:47:57] Speaker 11: Paul Abdul. At the time, I was the one who
[1:48:04] Speaker 11: I was the one who got her in the industry.
[1:48:06] Speaker 11: I mean when she was a Laker girl. I remember
[1:48:08] Speaker 11: sitting on the floor all.
[1:48:10] Speaker 10: The Abduchie did you get her?
[1:48:11] Speaker 4: In the nasty video?
[1:48:13] Speaker 11: Me and Marlin had see some Lake and see on
[1:48:16] Speaker 11: the floors when Magic Johnson was doing their thing at
[1:48:19] Speaker 11: the time, and I'm sitting on the floor and every
[1:48:23] Speaker 11: day I'm on the floor, walks around every day before
[1:48:26] Speaker 11: the game start.
[1:48:27] Speaker 4: Dinzel would come over and say hello, tover we come for.
[1:48:30] Speaker 11: He comes in Lake and I think, I think he
[1:48:33] Speaker 11: just came off his first big movie, his first movie,
[1:48:36] Speaker 11: and he would walk around the place and people really
[1:48:39] Speaker 11: didn't know who he was, and he would come over
[1:48:41] Speaker 11: and say hello to me.
[1:48:41] Speaker 4: But he's Dinzel today. But anyway, I'm sitting.
[1:48:44] Speaker 11: On the floor and all of a sudden, Paula comes
[1:48:47] Speaker 11: over and another girl comes over, and they want an autograph,
[1:48:50] Speaker 11: you know, And all of a sudden, I signed an
[1:48:53] Speaker 11: autograph and she goes back and sit behind the basket,
[1:48:57] Speaker 11: well you know where the Laker girls sit. Me and
[1:48:59] Speaker 11: sit behind the basket, and all of a sudden, Sam
[1:49:02] Speaker 11: Watson come over and says, Jackie, Paula wants to know
[1:49:07] Speaker 11: that you want to have coffee, you have to be
[1:49:09] Speaker 11: a game.
[1:49:10] Speaker 4: And I said, sure, go tell her.
[1:49:14] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[1:49:14] Speaker 11: I made her after the game, and so we went
[1:49:16] Speaker 11: to have some coffee and we became very good friends,
[1:49:19] Speaker 11: you know, and we dated for like four years.
[1:49:22] Speaker 14: You know.
[1:49:22] Speaker 11: Next thing I know, she's doing Janet videos and put
[1:49:25] Speaker 11: her with Janet. Me and John McLean put her the Janet.
[1:49:27] Speaker 11: She's doing all the Janet stuff. And next thing, we
[1:49:31] Speaker 11: go on the Victory tour and we have way in
[1:49:34] Speaker 11: New York City. So we had a cattle call of people,
[1:49:37] Speaker 11: maybe three hundred people to be in this video. And
[1:49:41] Speaker 11: she helped me arrange the video for torture video. And
[1:49:45] Speaker 11: all of a sudden, I said, paul I want you
[1:49:48] Speaker 11: to choreograph this video.
[1:49:49] Speaker 4: She said no. I said, Paula, I believe in you.
[1:49:52] Speaker 4: You can do it. Don't be afraid. You can do this.
[1:49:56] Speaker 1: And she did and she that's the first video she choreographed.
[1:50:00] Speaker 4: She put it together.
[1:50:01] Speaker 1: Yeah, slime in everything, Yeah, yes, okay, oh okay. And
[1:50:12] Speaker 1: subsequent well, I assume that she also did the body
[1:50:14] Speaker 1: video as well, because that was well, it was kind
[1:50:18] Speaker 1: of a video of a cat of the body.
[1:50:23] Speaker 3: She didn't Oh.
[1:50:25] Speaker 4: No, Michael Peters did that.
[1:50:27] Speaker 1: Oh Michael Peter, uh, the legendary Michael Peters.
[1:50:33] Speaker 9: Yeah, Michael Peters are bad.
[1:50:35] Speaker 10: I don't care what peace man.
[1:50:39] Speaker 8: And I asked for a question, and you guys were
[1:50:41] Speaker 8: talking about bands.
[1:50:41] Speaker 15: I just wanted to ask about your touring bands, because
[1:50:45] Speaker 15: you imagine that, like whatever the audition process is must
[1:50:48] Speaker 15: be a must be crazy to audition for the Jackson's.
[1:50:51] Speaker 15: But I know I was lucky enough, Like I don't know,
[1:50:53] Speaker 15: seven years ago, to be a production assistant on a
[1:50:55] Speaker 15: Jackson's tour and you guys have yeah, But I went
[1:50:59] Speaker 15: to London with y'all. I went to the the Isle
[1:51:01] Speaker 15: of Wight and I went to a lot I didn't like.
[1:51:06] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[1:51:11] Speaker 15: I was helping out with Bill Brown and Nick and
[1:51:13] Speaker 15: everybody gap helping you in the dressing rooms.
[1:51:16] Speaker 8: Listen. I was on a hustle when you get fire
[1:51:18] Speaker 8: from radio.
[1:51:18] Speaker 14: You guys, do you know so.
[1:51:19] Speaker 8: Because I love Bill Brown, I didn't know this, Yuay.
[1:51:25] Speaker 8: I mentioned the CEO because I took a whole.
[1:51:28] Speaker 1: Stel fle Yeah. I tour with the Jackson's, you know.
[1:51:32] Speaker 15: One time I worked for the Jackson's and it was
[1:51:34] Speaker 15: just amazing to see that, Like the band that y'all
[1:51:36] Speaker 15: formed was not only just some of them were young,
[1:51:38] Speaker 15: like your music director of Brandon at the time, he
[1:51:40] Speaker 15: was like thirty early maybe thirty.
[1:51:43] Speaker 8: Right, but just a dynamic, amazing, stupendous band. And you
[1:51:46] Speaker 8: combined it with some ogs. But can you just talk
[1:51:48] Speaker 8: about the process now for to put together a Jackson band.
[1:51:52] Speaker 1: Who's playing bass? By the way, in your current band.
[1:51:58] Speaker 8: Brandon is young. Brandon, I want to Oscar when he
[1:52:01] Speaker 8: was for three six Mafia.
[1:52:04] Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, killing.
[1:52:10] Speaker 8: And your drummer and your drummer and your percussionists.
[1:52:13] Speaker 1: Oh my god.
[1:52:14] Speaker 8: Yeah, but what is the process now? But what's the
[1:52:17] Speaker 8: process now? How did you how do you decide who's
[1:52:19] Speaker 8: good enough.
[1:52:20] Speaker 4: To well, you know, you know, you know when those
[1:52:23] Speaker 4: guys come in, they come in knowing the music. They
[1:52:27] Speaker 4: come in playing it because they grew up on it.
[1:52:30] Speaker 6: We had years to learn it.
[1:52:31] Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, they come in knowing the stuff. You know
[1:52:34] Speaker 11: when they started playing. Oh my god, these young cauts,
[1:52:37] Speaker 11: how do they know this stuff like this?
[1:52:38] Speaker 10: You know, and they grew up playing you know. Yeah,
[1:52:43] Speaker 10: you just polish him up a little bit, but they
[1:52:45] Speaker 10: pretty much what.
[1:52:46] Speaker 15: And another question says, you guys are going to steal
[1:52:49] Speaker 15: tour right after COVID because y'all have been touring. Okay,
[1:52:52] Speaker 15: so can you tell people your routines? Your dance routine
[1:52:56] Speaker 15: seemed the exact same. I mean from the freeze that
[1:52:59] Speaker 15: you talked about, like everything y'all do your bodies move
[1:53:02] Speaker 15: the exact same? Is it the exact same? And how
[1:53:04] Speaker 15: do y'all maintain that? Tito gave me some quick like
[1:53:06] Speaker 15: this is just what we do. Answer, But I know,
[1:53:09] Speaker 15: Marlon and Jacket.
[1:53:09] Speaker 11: It is you know, you know, once once we you know,
[1:53:14] Speaker 11: we can pay all stage for the longest time, and
[1:53:17] Speaker 11: once we get together, somehow it just comes together.
[1:53:21] Speaker 4: It comes that way because we've been doing it for
[1:53:23] Speaker 4: so long. We just know each other's moves. We know,
[1:53:26] Speaker 4: matter of fact, we know where Michael would be on stage.
[1:53:29] Speaker 11: You know, any given time, we know exactly where he
[1:53:32] Speaker 11: would be on that stage, even today if we go
[1:53:35] Speaker 11: in the States, you know, and that's how it works.
[1:53:37] Speaker 4: We just it just works that way.
[1:53:39] Speaker 15: How do you make sure your bodies are still able
[1:53:42] Speaker 15: to keep up with these moves on the daily?
[1:53:45] Speaker 9: Well sometimes, you know, you know, when you're on stage,
[1:53:51] Speaker 9: if you try to if you think of a move
[1:53:53] Speaker 9: and try to do it, it doesn't work.
[1:53:55] Speaker 10: That when you just got to feel it and you
[1:53:56] Speaker 10: do it and don't think about it.
[1:53:58] Speaker 4: That's that's the bottom of the line, you know.
[1:54:00] Speaker 6: Yea, brothers, y'all take vitamins and things or like yeah, yeah,
[1:54:04] Speaker 6: we did.
[1:54:04] Speaker 4: We stay in shape.
[1:54:05] Speaker 11: And plus you know, like our show is like a
[1:54:07] Speaker 11: high energy show and it's like working out. To me,
[1:54:10] Speaker 11: he could work out because I get a break, workout
[1:54:12] Speaker 11: aspire a lot, but only yes, Plus you get.
[1:54:15] Speaker 4: A check at the end. Of the day.
[1:54:16] Speaker 6: But you know, it's just talk about it.
[1:54:22] Speaker 4: It's like it's like going to the gym. You know,
[1:54:24] Speaker 4: it's like it's a great workout for we love it.
[1:54:27] Speaker 9: The main key, the main kids, make sure you get
[1:54:29] Speaker 9: your rests. We do not go out and party at
[1:54:31] Speaker 9: clubs after We never did day all night.
[1:54:34] Speaker 4: We never did.
[1:54:35] Speaker 10: We go to bed and get our rest.
[1:54:37] Speaker 9: So we can be ready to go the next day. Yeah.
[1:54:39] Speaker 7: I was s curious to know too, like y'all's you know,
[1:54:41] Speaker 7: because y'all were raised Jovah's witness, and I was scarious
[1:54:44] Speaker 7: to know how your parents at that time, you know,
[1:54:46] Speaker 7: when y'all were kids and just throughout your career, how
[1:54:49] Speaker 7: much did your faith play in you know, I guess
[1:54:53] Speaker 7: developing that discipline that you guys talk about. And how
[1:54:55] Speaker 7: did your parents say, Okay, y'all, can you got your career,
[1:54:59] Speaker 7: but you also will have to I guess worship in
[1:55:01] Speaker 7: whatever way.
[1:55:02] Speaker 6: How did y'all strike about us?
[1:55:03] Speaker 9: Well, my mom was different long as you had some
[1:55:06] Speaker 9: type of spiritual belief or whatever, but they understood that
[1:55:10] Speaker 9: uh dollar Bill's got you out of Gary.
[1:55:13] Speaker 6: Let's talk about it.
[1:55:17] Speaker 9: But we say, but what I loved about my mam
[1:55:20] Speaker 9: is that she didn't try to force the religion. Yeah, uh,
[1:55:24] Speaker 9: you know Jehovah Williams, because when I got married, you know,
[1:55:28] Speaker 9: I I became a Catholic and a Catholic church all
[1:55:32] Speaker 9: the time, and things.
[1:55:33] Speaker 10: Got My wife.
[1:55:34] Speaker 9: As long as you had some type of belief and
[1:55:36] Speaker 9: and God in your life and tried to do the
[1:55:40] Speaker 9: right thing, she was comfortable with that. Now my sister,
[1:55:43] Speaker 9: my sister reb she's different, she's still she thought and
[1:55:46] Speaker 9: washed towels that.
[1:55:47] Speaker 11: You and Michael. And Michael was baptized too. Michael got baptized.
[1:55:56] Speaker 11: He was baptized at one time, and he told me
[1:55:59] Speaker 11: to story that he was really serious. It was a Saturday,
[1:56:04] Speaker 11: you know how Joe Woodness knocked on the door and
[1:56:07] Speaker 11: talked to West towner. So Michael knocked on this girl's door.
[1:56:10] Speaker 11: She opened the door and realized it was him, and
[1:56:13] Speaker 11: she started peeing. He said, she started peeing, right, she.
[1:56:22] Speaker 1: You know what to do.
[1:56:23] Speaker 11: He told me, he's trying to teach her about Jehovah,
[1:56:26] Speaker 11: the God, Jehovah God, right, and she's realizing, but she
[1:56:30] Speaker 11: just stopped.
[1:56:34] Speaker 4: This is a true story, yeah, true story.
[1:56:39] Speaker 1: That is our clip for this episode.
[1:56:43] Speaker 8: I can't wait to see it animated.
[1:56:50] Speaker 4: Yeah, he was really serious.
[1:56:52] Speaker 11: Bill Brave was waiting for him, because Bill Brave, you know,
[1:56:55] Speaker 11: he would go waiting at times, you know, standing standing
[1:56:57] Speaker 11: over the corner and wait for him, you know, and
[1:57:00] Speaker 11: and he would throw out and people. It was kind
[1:57:02] Speaker 11: of hard for him to do that at the time,
[1:57:04] Speaker 11: but he did it, you know, and so and so
[1:57:06] Speaker 11: some of the things he really wanted to do, he
[1:57:08] Speaker 11: had to get out of the faith, you know, he
[1:57:10] Speaker 11: had to get out of your witness due to really
[1:57:12] Speaker 11: do his thing where he really wanted to go.
[1:57:14] Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
[1:57:15] Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm never going to get that visual up. Oh,
[1:57:19] Speaker 1: thank you, Jackie. I appreciate that. I can ask questions forever.
[1:57:25] Speaker 1: Have you guys have done your questions?
[1:57:27] Speaker 8: I got one family question.
[1:57:29] Speaker 15: I want to know throughout your lives and actually now
