[0:00] We at The Imperfects acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional owners of the land on which this podcast is recorded, and we extend our respects to the elders past and present.
[0:11] This very special Christmas episode with the little drummer girl is, it's, well, it's a little on the edge, so listen with caution.
[0:19] And also, it goes without saying that this is definitely not a Christmas episode for kids.
[0:27] You know, I'm just a little drama girl.
[0:30] And that's why I wanted to talk to you guys because I am so – I want to know how I can let this go.
[0:37] I think you're telling your story.
[0:38] I think just talking about it.
[0:39] And we'll all know.
[0:40] Everyone's going to know now.
[0:42] I want to stop being this way.
[0:44] I want to stop seeing, you know, the world as my enemy.
[0:49] The Imperfects invites you into a very safe place.
[0:54] Merry Christmas!
[0:56] A place where we share without judgment and drink heaps and heaps of vulnerability.
[1:08] Grab yourself a cup.
[1:10] This is The Vulnerability House.
[1:14] Merry holidays.
[1:17] Christmas and others.
[1:19] Yeah.
[1:19] Merry everything.
[1:20] I think you're hitching your wagon to Christmas pretty strongly.
[1:28] It's true.
[1:28] For those who are not watching.
[1:29] It's too late to be on PC now.
[1:31] Yeah, that's true.
[1:33] And our guest is correct.
[1:36] The table, the studio is adorned with Christmas decorations, carrots, cookies.
[1:43] Anyway, so exciting.
[1:45] This is our annual tradition, our Vulnerability House Christmas edition.
[1:50] We always have incredible guests.
[1:52] We've had Santa.
[1:53] We've had Mrs. Claus.
[1:56] Thanks to Glenn Robbins.
[1:57] Thanks to Ursula Carlson.
[1:58] Yeah.
[1:58] Yeah.
[1:59] Guy Montgomery.
[2:00] Guy Montgomery as well.
[2:01] Who did he get us?
[2:03] He got us access to a little boy.
[2:05] Yeah.
[2:05] A little boy.
[2:06] Little boy Christmas.
[2:06] Little boy Christmas.
[2:07] Yeah, that's right.
[2:08] And he was lovely.
[2:10] And this year, this is so, so exciting, Hugh.
[2:13] Yeah.
[2:14] I mean, this is a pretty big get, and I don't think she has done a podcast interview before, so it's actually...
[2:20] I've never done a podcast before.
[2:23] Wow.
[2:23] I don't even really know what...
[2:26] Christmas is technically because I'm here via a rip in the time continuum.
[2:31] Oh.
[2:32] This is my story and the thing I'm trying to get out there is what happened at the birth of Jesus.
[2:38] Okay.
[2:38] Wow.
[2:39] This is a different sort of episode, but I think that's really, it's going to be really educational.
[2:43] Yes.
[2:44] Sort of.
[2:45] It's really me just airing my gripes, but I guess I'm still a bit confused about Christmas because where I'm from, Jesus hasn't died.
[2:55] Okay, well, we will say no more.
[2:58] He's great.
[2:59] He's all good.
[3:00] He's all good.
[3:01] Yeah, lives forever.
[3:03] So no stresses.
[3:04] Let's fill in the gaps a little bit because people might have already joined the dots, but we are joined by the little drummer girl.
[3:12] And a huge thank you to comedian Becky Lucas for putting us in touch with you.
[3:18] How do you know Becky?
[3:19] Becky?
[3:20] So I sort of jump around in the time continuum a little bit, and I met Becky at a Pilates class.
[3:27] Yeah.
[3:28] And we just got talking and... Reformer or Matt?
[3:31] It's Reformer.
[3:32] Mm-hmm.
[3:33] Yeah.
[3:34] Which, you know, people say isn't as hard, but...
[3:37] Is that true?
[3:38] Well, because, you know, you don't have to use your body for all that resistance and stuff.
[3:44] But where we go, it's a workout.
[3:48] That's right.
[3:48] Okay.
[3:49] And have you seen Becky perform?
[3:51] She's hilarious.
[3:52] Is she?
[3:52] Yeah.
[3:52] You've never seen her show?
[3:53] She's not that funny in real life.
[3:56] Oh.
[3:56] Yeah.
[3:56] She's very serious.
[3:58] And I think, you know, we are different people to...
[4:01] We have many multiple versions of ourselves and some people bring out comedy and some people dampen it.
[4:08] And I think I dampen it.
[4:10] Oh, you dampen it.
[4:11] In Becky.
[4:11] Yeah, I bring a seriousness to our conversations.
[4:15] A bit of a wet blanket.
[4:16] I have a wet blanket.
[4:17] And...
[4:19] I think, you know, we all have reasons for being a wet blanket.
[4:22] And that's sort of why I'm here to talk to you guys about where that comes from.
[4:28] Wow.
[4:29] Can I ask you, like, have you ever had an idea stolen?
[4:34] Not that I know of, to be honest, but maybe.
[4:37] I'm assuming you have.
[4:39] I have.
[4:40] Have you ever, okay, have you ever said something funny at a party?
[4:44] Someone else says it again and they get a big laugh.
[4:46] Yes.
[4:46] Yes, definitely.
[4:48] So you feel that.
[4:50] And to kind of stop the laughter and say, hey, hey, hey, my idea, my joke.
[4:55] Yes.
[4:56] If we could all direct that laughter back to me.
[4:57] Oh, yeah.
[4:58] Yeah.
[4:59] It's impossible.
[5:00] Is there someone that should be nervous right now?
[5:01] Like is there someone who should be?
[5:03] Yeah, my brother.
[5:04] Oh, all right.
[5:06] Here we go, because many people probably have heard of, and I'm sorry if this is a bit triggering.
[5:11] Say it.
[5:12] What is your name, actually, Little Drummer Girl?
[5:16] It's Sarah.
[5:17] Okay, Sarah, Sarah, Sarah.
[5:19] Sarah, Little Drummer Girl, Sarah.
[5:22] Because everyone knows, and I feel like we should know about you a lot more, but many people know of the Little Drummer Boy.
[5:30] Now, is that your brother?
[5:31] That's my brother.
[5:31] His name's Jandon.
[5:32] Jandon.
[5:35] Jandon, wow.
[5:37] Yeah, it's like Jaden and Brandon.
[5:39] Yeah, cool.
[5:40] But it's Jandon.
[5:42] But yeah, Jandon's like, where do I even begin?
[5:45] He's just...
[5:46] So basically, do you want the story or not?
[5:49] I mean, let's do it.
[5:50] It's technically a vulnerability house.
[5:52] There is a deck of cards here if you feel like you want to pick from them totally, but otherwise we can just talk vulnerability because clearly you've got stuff you want to talk about.
[5:59] So basically, when we were younger...
[6:04] You know, there was this, like, oh, baby Jesus has been born.
[6:06] You know, bring your gifts.
[6:09] Everyone come and celebrate this little baby.
[6:11] What was that like?
[6:12] Was that like, was Jesus?
[6:13] Oh, it was so exciting.
[6:15] Really?
[6:16] Yeah, like everyone was talking about it and...
[6:19] Do you know Mary and Joseph?
[6:20] Did you know?
[6:21] Well, my parents do.
[6:22] Okay, okay.
[6:22] They're family friends.
[6:23] Yeah, and they're like sort of family friends, but I never – you know when you're a kid, you just don't really care about your parents' friends?
[6:30] Yeah.
[6:31] So they were around, but she's a bit of a liar.
[6:36] There he is.
[6:37] Yeah.
[6:38] Oh.
[6:38] Come on.
[6:39] Like, she's a gorgeous woman.
[6:40] She's stunning.
[6:42] She's so kind.
[6:43] She's so nice.
[6:44] But, like.
[6:46] She lies.
[6:47] Yeah.
[6:48] Virgin.
[6:50] Okay, yeah.
[6:51] That is what they're calling the big lie.
[6:53] Yeah, there's a few raised eyebrows around town is all I'm saying.
[6:57] Yeah.
[6:58] And Joseph was a lovely guy but a bit, you know,
[7:02] You know, just simple.
[7:07] But lovely people and I don't mean to disrespect them.
[7:09] Yeah, definitely haven't done that.
[7:14] So there was this sort of, yeah, this buzz like, you know, Mary, we think Mary has like God inside of her.
[7:20] That's some buzz.
[7:22] It was crazy.
[7:24] She said God had impregnated her with the body of Christ.
[7:29] Okay, okay.
[7:30] And what was Joseph was like, yeah, cool.
[7:32] Yeah, well, Joseph sort of, you know, so Becky was telling me about how these days, like, there's lots of people in open relationships and stuff.
[7:39] Oh, yeah.
[7:39] And, you know, often, like, if a woman brings it up and the man doesn't want to go ahead with it, then he kind of has to save face and say, yeah, yeah.
[7:48] Yeah, we love it.
[7:50] Oh, okay.
[7:50] So Joseph was a bit like that.
[7:52] Yeah.
[7:53] You either go along with the lie or admit you've been cucked.
[7:58] He was really back against the wall.
[8:02] Got it.
[8:03] And I felt for him in that way.
[8:05] Yeah.
[8:07] So, yeah, there was this buzz.
[8:08] It was really beautiful.
[8:09] We all love God.
[8:10] We all love, you know, the birth of a baby is so exciting anyway.
[8:15] And there was some guys that lived near us and they were all going, taking frankincense, gold, myrrh.
[8:23] And I don't really know what myrrh is.
[8:27] Yeah.
[8:28] Yeah.
[8:28] No, you don't get, there's not much myrrh around these days.
[8:30] Yeah.
[8:31] Even frankincense is pretty hard to find.
[8:33] Okay.
[8:33] Even gold is actually quite expensive now.
[8:36] Really?
[8:36] Yeah.
[8:37] Okay.
[8:38] But those were all sweet, nice gifts and word got around like, yeah, they're bringing frankincense, gold, myrrh.
[8:46] So everyone brings something for the baby.
[8:48] Now, I was seven at this time.
[8:50] Yeah.
[8:51] And I didn't have anything, but I did have a little drum.
[8:55] And I was thinking, oh, you know, I could...
[8:58] I can make a little song for the baby and I can play my drum.
[9:01] Yeah.
[9:02] And people are going to go nuts.
[9:05] That's amazing.
[9:06] Great idea.
[9:06] It's a great idea.
[9:08] No one can prove it's not good.
[9:11] I'm a little girl singing a song.
[9:13] At this point, Sarah, are you known as the little drummer girl yet or are you just Sarah?
[9:19] I'm Sarah, but people know that I play drums.
[9:22] Okay.
[9:23] Yeah, but there was not that official like little drummer girl.
[9:26] Yeah.
[9:27] So anyway, so I was telling Jandon about it.
[9:29] I was like, oh, what are you going to bring?
[9:31] Sorry, is Jandon older or younger?
[9:33] Jandon's a bit older.
[9:34] Okay, yeah.
[9:35] Anyway, so I tell Jandon about it because he was like, I don't know what I'm going to take.
[9:40] And I tell him all the lyrics.
[9:43] I even show him Pa Rapa Pom Pom.
[9:45] Hang on, you came up with Pa Rapa Pom Pom?
[9:47] I came up with Pa Rapa Pom Pom.
[9:49] Whoa.
[9:50] So I played the song for him and he was like, oh, cool.
[9:54] Didn't even really acknowledge or give it up in the moment that it was a cool song.
[9:59] Anyway, we all heard word that baby Jesus was born.
[10:04] We got our camels ready.
[10:07] And Jandan and my dad set off and then mum and I were coming on the other camel but our camel had an anxiety attack.
[10:15] Yeah.
[10:17] How did you know?
[10:19] Heavy breathing.
[10:20] Yeah, okay.
[10:21] Just unable to focus.
[10:24] Yeah.
[10:24] Okay.
[10:25] It's actually quite common because you guys.
[10:26] In camels?
[10:27] Camels.
[10:28] Really?
[10:28] So camels aren't used as much these days.
[10:31] Not really.
[10:31] Not as much, no.
[10:32] Not here.
[10:33] Well, yeah, if you're someone listening to this podcast and you're across camel culture, you will know that, yeah, they are very prone to anxiety.
[10:44] Okay.
[10:45] You rub its hump a lot?
[10:46] Does that help?
[10:47] No, you don't.
[10:47] Yeah, do not touch the hump when it's having an anxiety attack.
[10:51] Yeah.
[10:53] You don't do that.
[10:54] I don't really have time to get into all of that.
[10:58] Camel culture.
[10:59] Camel culture.
[11:00] But, yeah, so then anyway, he calms down.
[11:03] We get on him and we follow after.
[11:06] We're not that much further behind, but we do lose sight of them in the distance.
[11:12] As we get there, I take my drum in and Jandon's kind of –
[11:18] being, you know, kind of tight-lipped about what he brought.
[11:23] So I arrive and I walk in and I'm seven, I'm cute, I have my drum and I begin to play.
[11:31] And I have to say, you know, the reaction was a little muted.
[11:37] Because just for a timeline, how long after Jandon did you arrive?
[11:42] Like 10 minutes.
[11:43] Okay.
[11:43] Yeah.
[11:44] Yeah.
[11:44] So then I'm playing and, you know, I'm looking around and I'm expecting smiles, warmth.
[11:52] Yeah.
[11:53] Sort of appreciation for this original song and this, like, incredible drumming.
[11:57] And you're singing the pa-ra-pa-pum.
[11:58] You're doing the full thing.
[12:00] It's very rousing.
[12:01] And I'm looking around, I'm seeing...
[12:05] eyes to the ground.
[12:06] I'm seeing shuffling feet, awkward.
[12:09] Just awkward.
[12:10] It felt awkward.
[12:11] And I, you know, even then as a little kid, I'm like, this isn't right.
[12:15] This feels wrong.
[12:15] This is wrong.
[12:17] This is adorable, what I'm doing.
[12:20] And then I finished the song and I'm kind of hot with embarrassment because it's not going well.
[12:25] And you're half like, you've committed.
[12:26] Yeah, I can't stop and say what's going on.
[12:28] I'm bombing.
[12:30] I'm bombing.
[12:30] You're bombing.
[12:31] And I finish, I wrap up the song and there's sort of a small, you know.
[12:38] Courteous.
[12:38] A courteous.
[12:39] A smattering of a place.
[12:41] And I'm like, you know, I'm spinning because the whole camel ride, I've been so excited for baby Jesus but also for the attention I was going to receive.
[12:52] And you're bringing something which you know this is going to be unlike any other gift anyone will bring.
[12:57] Exactly.
[12:57] Yeah, there's going to be a lot of frankincense, mer and gold and shit, but like there's no one to be doing a performance.
[13:01] A performance.
[13:02] An original song.
[13:03] Exactly.
[13:04] Yeah.
[13:05] Anyway, so that happens and then I think it was one of the wise men took me aside and just said, just letting you know, Jandon played that.
[13:14] We know that you've copied from Jandon.
[13:17] Oh.
[13:17] Yeah.
[13:18] So it was from the get-go.
[13:19] From the get-go.
[13:20] You copied.
[13:21] Yeah, and there was no sort of what happened here.
[13:24] Yeah.
[13:24] It was just you've stolen from Jandon.
[13:26] Oh.
[13:27] That's horrible.
[13:28] It was awful.
[13:30] What did Jandon say?
[13:32] Jandon just said, no, I think that was my song.
[13:36] And denied, denied, denied.
[13:38] Mum and Dad didn't really want to hear about it.
[13:41] And I was just, you know what the worst thing was?
[13:44] I had to carry that drum around.
[13:46] So Jandon, I'm assuming, Jandon has his own drum that he somehow acquired.
[13:51] No, he just like did it on his belly.
[13:53] Oh.
[13:54] Yeah.
[13:55] Because what you're wearing today, you look like a little drummer girl.
[13:59] Exactly.
[13:59] This is your outfit.
[14:00] I'm assuming this is what you wear all the time.
[14:02] Yeah.
[14:02] And this has since become known as what a drummer girl.
[14:05] Drummer boy.
[14:06] Drummer boy.
[14:06] Yeah.
[14:07] Okay.
[14:08] That's the thing with history.
[14:09] Things sort of – the retelling of it is so convoluted and that's basically what happened is I was wearing this, he played the song.
[14:17] So this is just what you usually wear?
[14:18] This is just your clothes?
[14:19] Yeah.
[14:20] Oh, cool.
[14:20] Yeah.
[14:21] Okay.
[14:22] So I'm just a little drummer girl and to be honest, I'm so focused and that's –
[14:27] why I wanted to talk to you guys because I am so – I want to know how I can let this go.
[14:31] This could be it.
[14:33] I think you're telling your story.
[14:35] I think just talking about it.
[14:37] And we'll all know.
[14:37] Everyone's going to know now.
[14:38] But, like, can we go bigger?
[14:40] Can we go on, like, a media blitz?
[14:42] Oh, you could.
[14:43] Yeah, I'm sure you could do that.
[14:44] Like, where can I go from here?
[14:46] Well, you know, I think Oprah's touring.
[14:48] Oh, yeah.
[14:48] Oprah?
[14:49] So who's Oprah?
[14:50] Oh, yeah.
[14:51] So Oprah Winfrey, she is probably like the most important human in the world.
[15:00] Still?
[15:00] Still?
[15:01] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[15:02] Definitely.
[15:04] No, definitely.
[15:05] Yeah.
[15:07] Just trying to clarify.
[15:08] But hang on.
[15:09] You don't know who she is.
[15:11] I don't, but I thought like, I don't know.
[15:13] I haven't heard her name in a little while.
[15:16] Like just in my travels.
[15:18] In your travels, yeah.
[15:19] In space time.
[15:19] Which name have you heard?
[15:21] Like if you were to say from what you know of the world, who's the most important human in the world right now?
[15:25] K-pop Demon Hunters.
[15:27] Yes.
[15:28] Very good.
[15:29] Yes.
[15:29] Yes.
[15:30] Okay, so I'm fascinated to talk.
[15:33] Maybe we can pick up some cards soon.
[15:35] But before that, I mean, I'm just curious because you're obviously so willing to talk about this experience with us.
[15:42] Have you spoken to Jandon about this ever?
[15:46] Like has it ever been a...
[15:48] Well, the thing is, like, every time I bring it up, mum and dad just, you know, tell me to let it go.
[15:55] Okay.
[15:56] And, yeah, there's just this, like, denial that anything ever happened.
[16:02] It's just so, it was just so embarrassing, like.
[16:06] I don't know.
[16:06] And, like, it's also just such bullshit.
[16:08] Like, even, you know, everyone in the song, it's like, oh, I play my song for you.
[16:13] He smiled at me.
[16:14] Like, he was, like, a day old.
[16:17] He smiled at you.
[16:18] Yeah.
[16:19] And he's written.
[16:19] And what's that?
[16:20] So you didn't write that lyric, obviously, to jam and throw it.
[16:23] Jandon, like, and, like, I will give it to Jandon.
[16:26] It fits the song.
[16:28] Yeah.
[16:29] But once you've got the bones of a good song, anyone can come up with a lyric.
[16:33] Yeah.
[16:33] You know what I mean?
[16:34] Absolutely.
[16:34] Yeah.
[16:34] It's like he smiled at you.
[16:36] Yeah.
[16:37] Bullshit.
[16:38] Bullshit.
[16:39] That was gas or, like, babies make all sorts of faces.
[16:43] It's like he didn't smile at you.
[16:45] I played my song for you.
[16:46] I played my sister's song for you.
[16:48] Yeah.
[16:48] That's what it should be.
[16:49] Yeah.
[16:49] I played my sister's song for you.
[16:51] Yeah, and here she comes.
[16:52] Yeah.
[16:52] So I let her finish off.
[16:53] Yeah, and I'm a dog c**t. Should be that.
[16:58] Yeah.
[17:00] Yeah.
[17:01] Yeah.
[17:02] Sorry.
[17:02] No, no, that's okay.
[17:03] That's fair enough.
[17:04] It's a lot of emotion.
[17:04] Yeah, it's an emotional thing.
[17:05] Yeah.
[17:06] Yeah, that would have been one hell of an ending to that.
[17:08] Yeah.
[17:09] Yeah.
[17:09] And it fits just as well.
[17:12] Yeah.
[17:13] And did you, like, now that, knowing that even now in 2025.
[17:18] Yeah.
[17:20] Jandon still has this enormous amount of like fame and recognition and like he's got he's got all the credit for this song.
[17:29] He is the little drummer boy and has been for thousands of years.
[17:33] Do you hold any sort of envy or grudge or like?
[17:36] Yeah.
[17:37] How do you think your life might have been different if it had have gone the way you expected?
[17:42] Well, you know, I wouldn't be here having to explain who I am.
[17:45] Yeah.
[17:46] That's one way it would change.
[17:47] I'd walk in there and there'd be a, you know, you guys would all be.
[17:52] Drumming.
[17:52] Yeah, drumming, talking about how great the song is, asking me if I had any other songs.
[17:58] Yeah, yeah.
[17:59] I mean, do you?
[18:00] Do you have any other?
[18:01] I have some other songs, yeah.
[18:02] Oh, would you mind sharing?
[18:05] Look, I don't have my drum.
[18:07] Have you heard of acapella?
[18:09] No.
[18:10] Aren't a cappella groups sort of for men who are going through a divorce and they're looking for that community?
[18:19] True, true, true.
[18:21] I have picked up on that.
[18:25] Can I ask a question about, and I hope this isn't too loaded, but do you think if roles were reversed and you had stolen the song off him, do you think your parents would be telling your brother to just let it go?
[18:41] You know, I ask myself that all the time.
[18:45] No, I think, you know, I think people would have felt very comfortable telling me, you know, that what I did was wrong and that I need to apologise to Jandon.
[18:55] And, yeah, I think there is something about the fact that, like, I'm the girl.
[19:00] So it's like, you know, you're the lowest of the low in the family dynamic, you know, especially where I'm from.
[19:07] Like I see women now...
[19:10] like seem more important these days.
[19:12] Yeah, it's completely equal now.
[19:13] Yeah.
[19:15] But, you know, like back then that wasn't really the case.
[19:18] Yeah, sure.
[19:19] You were just seen as, you know, if you could provide some sons, that was cool.
[19:25] But, yeah, you didn't have that same sort of status.
[19:27] Yeah.
[19:28] Oh, so there are no little drummer women back where you come from.
[19:32] It's sort of like you've got to give up the drum.
[19:34] Yeah.
[19:35] Yeah.
[19:36] So I think in one way they didn't even really want me to pursue my drumming and for them it was probably this great way to just be like, just drop it.
[19:44] Yeah.
[19:44] No more drums.
[19:45] Yeah, yeah.
[19:46] No more spectacles.
[19:47] Jandon sang the song, you know, just go home and, you know, clean the floor or, you know.
[19:57] Milk the camel.
[20:00] Jerk the camel off so he doesn't get anxious all the time.
[20:03] Stuff like that.
[20:04] Because people don't talk about that, but that was something he had to do.
[20:07] Yeah.
[20:09] The camels have a really high sex drive.
[20:11] Yeah.
[20:11] And sometimes that can lead to this sort of intensity of feeling.
[20:14] So that was one of my morning tasks.
[20:17] Oh, wow.
[20:17] Yeah.
[20:18] Jeez, life was rough back in 20 AD.
[20:20] Yeah.
[20:21] Yeah.
[20:22] That sounds really like hard work.
[20:27] You get used to it.
[20:28] Really?
[20:28] I've got really calloused hands.
[20:32] Yeah.
[20:33] It's really interesting actually.
[20:34] Yeah.
[20:34] From a historical context.
[20:35] Of course.
[20:36] And I think that's what's so exciting is that, you know, we can share information and it helps enrich each other's lives.
[20:41] Yeah.
[20:42] Yeah, I had to get underneath a camel and say a whole manner of things to get him sort of in the mood.
[20:49] Oh, and is that like you're saying words or is it?
[20:52] Yeah, I'm dirty talking to the camel.
[20:53] To the camel.
[20:54] Yeah.
[20:54] Yeah.
[20:55] Going, oh, you big Sandy, big Sandy guy.
[21:03] Well, things were different back then.
[21:06] Yeah, of course.
[21:07] You know, I have a lot of friends who had their first kid at 11.
[21:11] Oh, do you have kids?
[21:13] No.
[21:13] Okay.
[21:14] Yeah.
[21:14] I have a very bitter...
[21:16] angry disposition and it stopped men in my local village wanting to hang out with me.
[21:23] So Jandan like massive in pop culture?
[21:30] Yeah, but you know that thing of like you do one good thing and then you don't know, you can't back it up.
[21:36] One hit wonder.
[21:37] One hit wonder.
[21:38] So he is a bit of a one hit wonder, but...
[21:41] People still know who he is.
[21:42] People still, like, he does coast a lot on the drummer boy.
[21:46] Yeah.
[21:47] I wonder if you've ever had the chance to ask Jesus or tell Jesus the truth.
[21:52] Because he seems like a pretty truthful person.
[21:55] He's super truthful, but he's so busy.
[21:59] Oh, yeah, yeah.
[22:00] Chippy, yeah?
[22:00] He's a chippy.
[22:01] Yeah.
[22:03] So he's always working or, you know, helping out the less fortunate, and that's really good, but...
[22:11] Yeah, I guess he's kind of on his own trip as well.
[22:13] Like, I'm not saying he's not amazing, he is.
[22:15] Yeah.
[22:16] But there is something about people who, like...
[22:20] are always doing things for other people, they get a little bit of an ego themselves.
[22:24] And I'm not saying, you know, I don't want to go on the record saying that Jesus is like high on his own supply.
[22:31] I guess if you need the son of God, it'd be hard to not have a bit of an ego.
[22:35] Exactly.
[22:36] And, you know, he needs that ego to do what he does.
[22:38] I'm not putting him down.
[22:40] But that is just how I, it's hard to get, it's hard to get his ear about a song that I, you know, I wrote when he was a baby.
[22:46] You know, interestingly enough, the last line, I mean, this stinks of insecurity really, because what he's done is taken your song and then the final line is just me and my drum, me and my drum, me and my drum, me and my drum.
[23:02] Says it four times.
[23:03] He doesn't have a drum.
[23:04] Exactly.
[23:05] It's his stomach.
[23:06] Yeah.
[23:06] Yeah.
[23:07] Oh my God.
[23:08] Me and my.
[23:09] Me and my tum.
[23:10] Yeah.
[23:10] That's funny.
[23:10] Yeah.
[23:17] Yeah, just, you know, and then there I am holding my drum, my drum.
[23:22] Yeah.
[23:23] Outfit.
[23:23] Yeah, we get it, mate.
[23:24] We get it.
[23:25] Yeah.
[23:26] I know.
[23:26] It's a very sad story, but gosh, I'm so happy you've been able to tell us what really happened.
[23:32] Yeah.
[23:32] Thank you.
[23:33] And God's known the whole time, so that's.
[23:35] That's so true, and he does say that.
[23:37] Yeah, he is in my ear, like, when I have intrusive thoughts.
[23:41] Yeah.
[23:42] It's hard, actually.
[23:43] I'm like, what's God, what's intrusive thoughts?
[23:45] Yeah.
[23:47] but I'm getting better at learning what the difference is.
[23:51] Any other Christmas carols yours?
[23:52] Did you write any other ones?
[23:54] No, none that you would know of.
[23:56] But, yeah, I hear some of them, jingle bells, jingle bells.
[23:59] I mean, what the hell is that?
[24:00] What is that?
[24:01] And I've always wanted to say, who is Carol?
[24:05] Carol.
[24:05] Christmas Carol.
[24:06] Christmas Carol.
[24:07] Who is she?
[24:09] Christmas Carol.
[24:10] So is that a big deal?
[24:11] This is unbelievable.
[24:13] I mean, people call all Christmas songs Christmas carols, and I've never heard the story of Carol.
[24:20] Was she someone in your life?
[24:21] I'm going to have to fact check this, but if it's what I think, there is this batshit woman.
[24:28] Called Carol.
[24:29] Yeah.
[24:30] And, you know, she was the music teacher.
[24:34] Oh, yeah.
[24:35] Oh, my God.
[24:36] Yeah.
[24:36] And, you know, every song she suddenly, it's like every song that came to be, she would put them in a book and, you know, she's just a pain in the ass really.
[24:47] But it doesn't surprise me that...
[24:49] She's written.
[24:50] Yep.
[24:50] She's just sort of added on.
[24:51] Christmas carols.
[24:52] Collated all these songs and said, oh, yeah, and they're carols.
[24:56] We call them carols.
[24:56] Yeah, she's just named it after herself.
[24:58] And that's stuck.
[24:59] That's stuck till now.
[25:00] Wow.
[25:01] That's, I mean, yeah, as I say, I'm going to have to look into that.
[25:05] But if I know her, that's what's happened.
[25:08] Yeah.
[25:08] Well, I have cut.
[25:10] Hopefully it's not too distressing news for you, but a lot of people consider the little drummer boy song a Christmas carol.
[25:18] Hmm.
[25:18] Yeah.
[25:19] Right.
[25:20] That wouldn't surprise me because she loves Jandon.
[25:25] Yeah.
[25:27] She had her favourites and he was one of them.
[25:28] So we didn't get along.
[25:31] Yeah.
[25:32] Okay.
[25:33] We didn't get along.
[25:34] But that's fine.
[25:37] So what are these vulnerability cards?
[25:39] Vulnerability.
[25:41] Yeah.
[25:42] Yeah, vulnerability.
[25:43] Yeah.
[25:44] Vulnerability.
[25:44] Have you heard of that concept?
[25:46] Vulnerability?
[25:47] Not really, no.
[25:48] It's essentially like where you talk about something personal, something that might be a little bit hard to talk about, which is what you've been doing.
[25:55] Yeah, right.
[25:57] But these cards that you've just talked about there, we ask a lot of our guests on our podcast to basically just pick a card at random and you read out the question, like whatever this top one is.
[26:07] Do you want to read that question and what does that say?
[26:12] Growing up, what unspoken rules or beliefs did you absorb from your family?
[26:16] Oh, shit.
[26:16] Okay.
[26:17] That's triggering.
[26:18] Okay, that's what we call triggering.
[26:20] Okay, let's go to another one.
[26:21] I'm sorry.
[26:21] Sorry, Sarah.
[26:22] Okay, I'll just quickly check this.
[26:27] Okay.
[26:27] Maybe, hopefully this is something that... What's something you keep doing that you wish you could stop?
[26:34] Well...
[26:38] I want to stop being this way.
[26:40] I want to stop seeing, you know, the world as my enemy.
[26:44] Yeah.
[26:45] Because that's how it feels.
[26:46] It feels like no one's listening to me, that no one –
[26:51] It respects my version of the truth.
[26:53] And that's just, I carry that with me everywhere.
[26:55] I go into a shop.
[26:57] The first question is, how's Jandon?
[27:00] My guard goes up.
[27:01] Yeah, of course.
[27:02] And then I hate that person.
[27:03] You're in Jandon's shadow and that's unfair.
[27:05] Exactly.
[27:05] And it's like, you know, they say, oh, they don't have a chip on their shoulder.
[27:08] They've got a bloody log.
[27:09] That's what they say about me.
[27:11] But they don't know the full story, clearly.
[27:13] And if they knew the full story, they would give you a little bit of slack.
[27:16] Well, you know, I don't know if people in my time really care, but hopefully in the modern age where women are hurt a little bit more, maybe there's room for me.
[27:27] Yeah.
[27:28] Now, it's all been like there's been some very like vulnerable stories you've told us and you've shared so much.
[27:33] It's been quite heavy and we're really thankful for that.
[27:36] Why don't we finish with this card?
[27:38] Where are you when you are truly happy?
[27:40] Describe the scene.
[27:43] This is going to sound so crazy, but me and my camel, hands around.
[27:55] No, I totally get it.
[27:57] Yeah.
[27:57] No, and it sounds so beautiful.
[28:00] That was a much bigger camel by the look of it as well.
[28:02] So to speak.
[28:05] It's just you know when it's a simple task and you know what you're good at.
[28:09] Yes.
[28:10] Yeah.
[28:10] And maybe that speaks to me not pushing myself outside of my boundaries, but I just like when I know what I'm doing, I'm good at it, and I get the job done.
[28:18] Yeah, you and the camel are in flow.
[28:20] Yeah.
[28:20] Yeah.
[28:21] Beautiful.
[28:22] Yeah, amazing.
[28:23] I hope you can answer that question with your music one day, like writing music again.
[28:28] Yeah.
[28:28] I definitely have some songs swirling around.
[28:31] Pilates.
[28:31] That's awesome.
[28:36] That's the start of something I'm coming up with.
[28:38] That's good.
[28:38] Yeah.
[28:39] It's really like, you know, from the throat.
[28:43] Yeah.
[28:44] It's so brave of you to come on the podcast and talk about this really, really distressing time in your life, which clearly plays a big part in your life still.
[28:52] You're an incredible woman and we're really, really chuffed to have you on the show.
[28:59] I don't know what that means.
[29:00] It means really happy.
[29:03] Oh, chuffed.
[29:04] Chuffed, yeah.
[29:05] Cool.
[29:05] Yeah.
[29:06] Well, there is actually one other thing.
[29:09] So this is a slightly strange turn, but Becky will get this.
[29:15] Okay.
[29:15] So Becky, and I believe Becky's worded you up on this because for these Christmas episodes, so there's a concept now called advertising and we have advertising during this show that plays throughout the year.
[29:31] Why would you need to do that?
[29:32] Yeah.
[29:32] It's so we can get money.
[29:34] You know how you get paid for work.
[29:37] So that's how we get paid for work.
[29:39] However, for these episodes, these Christmas episodes, we actually donate the money that we make from ads to the charity of the guests choosing.
[29:49] Yes.
[29:49] Okay, yes.
[29:50] I do know about this.
[29:51] Yeah, so Becky apparently passed on a charity she wants you to talk about.
[29:56] Yes.
[30:01] Becky and I have struck up this friendship and I met her during a very, very difficult time in her life.
[30:06] So her son had.
[30:08] Will this be easier if you go and get Becky?
[30:10] Maybe I should get Becky.
[30:11] Yeah.
[30:12] Maybe go get Becky because I know she's here somewhere.
[30:14] I think she's waiting in the waiting room.
[30:16] So maybe.
[30:16] Yeah.
[30:17] Well, we'll just switch off the cameras for a sec and then we'll go get Becky.
[30:22] I'll go grab Becky.
[30:23] Awesome.
[30:23] Okay, cool.
[30:24] Okay.
[30:25] Bye.
[30:25] Bye.
[30:30] Okay, so Becky, thank you so much for joining us.
[30:32] Hey, guys.
[30:33] Was she all right?
[30:34] She was great.
[30:35] Delightful.
[30:36] Yeah.
[30:36] So good.
[30:37] She's obviously got like a lot of baggage and there's like a lot of stuff that's happened to her.
[30:41] So, no, she was just very, very open about it all.
[30:45] Oh, that's cool.
[30:45] Yeah, no, she's a cool chick.
[30:46] She's a cool chick.
[30:47] I'm glad you guys liked her.
[30:49] We did.
[30:50] We loved her.
[30:50] Yeah.
[30:51] So, Becca, we started going into it with Sarah, the drama girl, but your charity that we're donating the money from the ads from this episode.
[31:00] Yeah.
[31:02] Yeah.
[31:02] Can you tell us about?
[31:03] Yeah.
[31:04] So –
[31:06] My son was born with a very serious heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot and he needed open heart surgery when he was a baby.
[31:20] Oh, heart.
[31:21] And, yeah, I mean, I don't need to go into it all, but it's just like it was an extremely stressful situation.
[31:28] awful, awful time.
[31:29] And, you know, we were really lucky because we live within driving distance to the hospital.
[31:36] But even so, yeah, just that time in the hospital, like not knowing when you're going to get out and like just caring for this little like baby baby.
[31:46] like looking at the machines and like these little numbers.
[31:50] It's just, you know, it's just very awful.
[31:52] And there's this charity called Heart Kids.
[31:56] So like, you know, they do a lot of things that make parents, we didn't need to use them as much because they do a lot of things like organising accommodation for families who live in that, you know, far away and stuff.
[32:06] But they also have, you know, programs and meetups and it's – I'm just so grateful to do this because I haven't really known how to – like I want to do something for them at some point, but it's hard to even like – I don't even really want to – sometimes like I'm just dealing with the emotion of what happened is too painful.
[32:32] And sometimes it's like –
[32:36] I just want to be normal because he's so happy and life is back to normal and sometimes going back into like even, I don't know, like the acknowledgement of this charity is hard.
[32:48] So I want to do something at some point and I will be ready soon, but this is a great, anyway, Heart Kids, they help kids throughout all different because he'll have it forever, like even though he'll live a very normal life.
[33:00] So they tell me.
[33:02] Right.
[33:02] Also, it's something that you have to kind of always keep an eye on.
[33:05] Yeah.
[33:05] So he'll always need annual checkups.
[33:07] And when he goes through puberty, they have to put a valve in, which, yeah, they say can be done by a catheter.
[33:15] But he will need, like, maybe in another 15 or 20 years from then, like, yeah, it'll just always be something that he needs to navigate.
[33:23] And they also help.
[33:25] Because it's so emotional.
[33:26] Sorry, I'm going on too long.
[33:27] Not at all.
[33:27] No, not at all.
[33:28] It's just like I'm so overwhelmed at how much I love him.
[33:33] And even without all of this, like I just get so sad thinking like he's going to be rejected or like, you know, it's like, oh, my God, you think the baby stage is hard.
[33:43] And then it's like the emotions are like the emotions of.
[33:47] you know, this little perfect being in the world's just going to chip away at him.
[33:52] And like, I just am so floored by how much I care about him and like how I'm going to have to, oh, you know, you look at them and you're like, you need so much love and resources forever.
[34:06] Yeah.
[34:07] What the fuck?
[34:09] So there's this extra thing in my head.
[34:11] Like, when do I start talking to him about what happened?
[34:14] And, you know, do I want to?
[34:18] you know, what's the best avenue?
[34:19] Are you like, everything's fine, blah, blah, blah.
[34:21] Or are you like, you're allowed to feel scared about it and it's just a horrible time and you're just looking for anyone who's been through it or anyone who can give you any advice and just being in the hospital, like they just, all these different charities run on nothing, like and there's people doing all they can and I remember thinking if I could do anything to help, like I can't wait for that to happen.
[34:45] So I'm so grateful.
[34:47] I would be so grateful.
[34:48] Yeah, for the money.
[34:49] That's amazing.
[34:51] Well, I feel very – well, we all do.
[34:53] I'm no doubt feel very proud that we can donate.
[34:56] That sounds incredible.
[34:57] Like people who can look – so they look after families when the family is going through something.
[35:01] Yeah, they arrange accommodation and like flats.
[35:04] And you also just need –
[35:07] There's people that come in and talk to you.
[35:08] Like there was the first – we had two hospital visits.
[35:11] The first one was unexpected and you're just suddenly like looking after – I was suddenly looking after a 10-week-old on a hospital bed, no sleep all night.
[35:19] There's kids screaming, like recovering from different surgeries and stuff.
[35:24] And you're just mental.
[35:26] And, like, you know, they would have someone coming around and talking to you and you just cling on to anything, looking for anyone to shed any light on any of it.
[35:35] And so they do a really good job of that.
[35:38] Yeah.
[35:38] They do great work.
[35:40] And so obviously, so thanks to you where the money from this will be donated, but can people donate in other ways?
[35:47] Yeah, you can donate and stuff.
[35:49] So we'll link to all that in the show notes of the episode.
[35:52] Yes.
[35:52] And at some point I will like do some shows and, you know.
[35:56] help.
[35:56] It's just been this weird thing where it's like, it's been so hard to even get back to, it's weird when you go through something like that.
[36:03] Cause I remember thinking, oh, well my life's over.
[36:06] Like when he was about to go in for surgery, I was like, oh, like I'll never, like life's over for me.
[36:12] So this is what life is.
[36:14] And like, life is really good again.
[36:16] Like, you know, I just, we were driving to the beach the other day and he's so happy and playing music and
[36:23] It was such a nice day and I was like, oh, my God, it's like having a second go.
[36:27] Yeah, wow.
[36:28] So I feel like I'm only just in the phase where I can, like, get back and then I will do something for them, I promise.
[36:36] How old is he?
[36:37] He's 20 months now.
[36:38] 20 months, okay, yeah.
[36:39] He's so cute.
[36:40] Yeah.
[36:40] Yeah.
[36:41] Oh, amazing, Becky.
[36:42] God, I feel like it's like we've just got a little mini episode of the podcast.
[36:47] I know.
[36:47] I'm always like, I don't want to talk about it.
[36:49] And I'm like, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
[36:50] Yeah.
[36:51] But it's obviously still so raw.
[36:54] It is, yeah.
[36:55] And no one gets it, which is good.
[36:57] Like no one should.
[36:58] I hope no one, you know, you don't wish for people to go through something like that so they understand.
[37:03] But it is lonely because, yeah, no one, like I'm just back in comedy and everyone's like, oh, how old are you, baby?
[37:09] And I'm like, oh.
[37:11] Long story.
[37:12] Yeah.
[37:13] It's not a long story how old he is.
[37:15] That's just a number.
[37:17] That's one thing that's just straight up and down.
[37:20] No, but I know what you mean, like to get just sort of like generic questions.
[37:24] Yeah.
[37:26] From people who don't know the story or don't know what.
[37:28] Yeah.
[37:28] That would be strange.
[37:29] Yeah.
[37:30] Yeah.
[37:30] It was.
[37:31] But anyway, life's, you know, it's getting, it's feeling more and more normal.
[37:36] And he's the best.
[37:37] Yeah.
[37:38] That's so good.
[37:38] He's so funny and cute.
[37:40] I miss him.
[37:40] Yeah, I'm going to be such an annoying mum.
[37:44] I just want him to live with me forever.
[37:47] Oh, yeah.
[37:49] Yeah.
[37:50] Oh, that's amazing.
[37:50] Yeah.
[37:51] I'm sure he'll love that.
[37:52] I'm sure, yeah.
[37:54] Well, Becky, thank you.
[37:55] And please thank Sarah for us.
[37:56] I will.
[37:56] I will.
[37:57] She was great.
[37:57] Well.
[38:03] It's fun hovering between character and role.
[38:06] I know.
[38:07] It is.
[38:07] It is a challenge.
[38:09] It's life.
[38:10] It is life.
[38:12] Thanks, guys.
[38:12] Yeah, thanks for having me.
[38:13] Thanks for having Sarah.
[38:14] Thank you.
[38:15] Thanks, Maggie.
