[0:05] Speaker 1: Podcast listeners and Cleveland sorta. This is for you. Welcome
[0:12] Speaker 1: to No Dunks, presented by FanDuel. I'm test Melie with me.
[0:16] Speaker 1: It's the man who's always making the magic happen. It's JD. Hello,
[0:20] Speaker 1: what's up, JD? Here we are in the studio. It's
[0:23] Speaker 1: great to be back for me. It's been a while
[0:26] Speaker 1: I've been here. Oh, yesterday I did a little short
[0:29] Speaker 1: show about the three team trade that happened. It's still
[0:33] Speaker 1: eating me because at the end of the show, is
[0:36] Speaker 1: going through Dallas's roster for next season, and I said,
[0:40] Speaker 1: Olivia Maxon's prosper is on the Mavericks roster because I
[0:45] Speaker 1: was looking through the roster and he's still being paid
[0:49] Speaker 1: by the Mask because he was waved by them last year.
[0:51] Speaker 2: And I said he was going to be on the
[0:52] Speaker 2: roster next year.
[0:53] Speaker 3: But he's a grizzly and.
[0:53] Speaker 1: It's still eating at me. So I had to get
[0:55] Speaker 1: that off my chest. It's off my chest a correction
[0:58] Speaker 1: to start the show. We got to be real here. Yeah,
[1:04] Speaker 1: I know it's eating at me all night and I
[1:06] Speaker 1: thought to myself, I'm not going to start the show
[1:08] Speaker 1: with that. I'm not going to start the show with that,
[1:09] Speaker 1: but I ended up starting the show with that. What
[1:12] Speaker 1: I did want to start this show with was a
[1:15] Speaker 1: huge review of my Yellowstone Park.
[1:18] Speaker 2: Yes, no, I'm kidding, I'm not going to do a
[1:20] Speaker 2: huge review.
[1:20] Speaker 3: It was great.
[1:22] Speaker 1: It's magical. It really is magical. Old faithful, old faithful
[1:26] Speaker 1: picture pictures. You know, they don't do it justice. They
[1:29] Speaker 1: really don't.
[1:30] Speaker 2: I'm not kidding.
[1:31] Speaker 3: I hear it. Yeah, I've never been, so I'd love
[1:34] Speaker 3: to go.
[1:35] Speaker 2: Yeah, you gotta go. It's wonderful.
[1:38] Speaker 3: I saw a picture of you on a horse.
[1:41] Speaker 1: Yeah, that wasn't planned. I was surprised. I was surprised.
[1:44] Speaker 1: We took We ended up going. This was outside of
[1:47] Speaker 1: Yellstone Park. I went to Jackson, Wyoming. I got my
[1:51] Speaker 1: kids on horses. That was surprising. A six and a
[1:54] Speaker 1: half year old, a little risky.
[1:55] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[1:57] Speaker 1: I mean, it wasn't a wild horse like controlled uh
[2:03] Speaker 1: the situation, controlled environment? Yes, yes, yes, so yeah we didn't.
[2:09] Speaker 2: She's just it was just know. She was great.
[2:15] Speaker 1: She was so into it. My horse was named Big
[2:17] Speaker 1: Mac because as soon as I sat on him, he
[2:21] Speaker 1: spit up some white stuff. And they call him Big
[2:24] Speaker 1: Mac because everything he spits up. Kind of looks like
[2:26] Speaker 1: big Mac sauce. Yeah, he was disgusting. The guy, the
[2:30] Speaker 1: guy who was leading our ride said, I love this horse.
[2:34] Speaker 1: He's beautiful. His mane was trimmed so nicely. But he's disgusting,
[2:40] Speaker 1: is what he said. Then his uh spit turned green
[2:43] Speaker 1: after a while. But great horse, okay, uh and yeah,
[2:46] Speaker 1: great ride, really really fun ride. I didn't We've we've
[2:50] Speaker 1: brought it up on the show before, way back when
[2:54] Speaker 1: a lot of us don't really like horses, but I am.
[2:56] Speaker 3: I enjoy a horse. Yeah, I like horses. Sure, why not?
[3:00] Speaker 2: I'm with you now after that ride?
[3:01] Speaker 3: Wow, Yeah, you've turned the corner on a horse.
[3:04] Speaker 2: Yeah, because they are controlled.
[3:07] Speaker 1: I guess the worry is and maybe the the.
[3:12] Speaker 3: Unknown of the horses.
[3:13] Speaker 2: Well, he could be a wild one.
[3:16] Speaker 3: You know, absolutely, but if you get a trained one, yeah,
[3:20] Speaker 3: a broken one, I hate to say.
[3:23] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[3:23] Speaker 1: That was and that's the great thing about Yelstone Park.
[3:26] Speaker 1: No animals are broken there. They all feel they were riding.
[3:32] Speaker 1: It was just so fun.
[3:33] Speaker 3: Did you gallop and trot or was it just a walk?
[3:36] Speaker 1: It was just a walk pretty much. We did have
[3:41] Speaker 1: a nine year old who was the co leader of
[3:45] Speaker 1: our tribe, riding around for an hour a nine year
[3:47] Speaker 1: old on a horse. He did some galloping. Yeah, yeah,
[3:50] Speaker 1: that was cool to say.
[3:51] Speaker 3: That's fun, like if you can get on a horse,
[3:54] Speaker 3: like on a more advanced rides where they take you
[3:57] Speaker 3: like trotting. Trotting is tough because it's like up and down,
[4:02] Speaker 3: but once you're in a gallop and you're with the horse,
[4:06] Speaker 3: it's it's very cool. Yeah, that's awesome.
[4:08] Speaker 1: That's where we were worried about our six year old kid.
[4:11] Speaker 1: Is that gallop? But she looked like she was flying
[4:13] Speaker 1: off that thing. Yeah, so you've done the I've done.
[4:18] Speaker 3: I've done ride it like rides like tours basically, but
[4:21] Speaker 3: more advanced tours through trails and stuff. Yeah, that's what
[4:25] Speaker 3: we did, and but like portions of it were like that.
[4:29] Speaker 3: We were on a full on gallop, like through the
[4:31] Speaker 3: forest kind of thing.
[4:32] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[4:33] Speaker 3: It was awesome, man.
[4:34] Speaker 2: Yeah we did that. That's what we did.
[4:36] Speaker 3: So you did, like you ran on the horse.
[4:38] Speaker 2: Yeah, well but ran. I reluctant to say ran because
[4:42] Speaker 2: it's slow.
[4:44] Speaker 3: Okay, well then you didn't run because it's fast when
[4:47] Speaker 3: you're on a gallop.
[4:48] Speaker 2: We weren't flying around. It was slow. But yeah, the
[4:51] Speaker 2: whole thing was premeditated.
[4:52] Speaker 1: We know what we're doing. The horse knows what it's doing.
[4:55] Speaker 1: It goes through water, it takes a sip of water,
[4:58] Speaker 1: it trots on rocks. I was kind of worried looking
[5:02] Speaker 1: down at the water. It's all rocks.
[5:03] Speaker 2: But they're hooves are no problem. They know how to
[5:05] Speaker 2: ride through that.
[5:06] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[5:06] Speaker 1: I don't want to fall on rocks anyway, neither does
[5:10] Speaker 1: the horse. Yeah that's a good point. Well, I'm more
[5:14] Speaker 1: likely to fall off the horse than Yeah.
[5:16] Speaker 3: True, the horse falls, you fall. That's that's a guarantee.
[5:21] Speaker 2: All right.
[5:21] Speaker 1: So getting back here into the studio, it was fun,
[5:24] Speaker 1: obviously to be back here in the studio, was debating
[5:27] Speaker 1: what kind of show are we doing. We're talking about
[5:29] Speaker 1: Summer League and the Golden State Warriors winning the thing. No, no, no,
[5:34] Speaker 1: Although it was a fun ending because there aren't many
[5:37] Speaker 1: memorable Summer League moments where you say, I remember twenty fourteen,
[5:40] Speaker 1: This one is kind of cool where the Warriors won.
[5:43] Speaker 1: Jaxel Lndenborg won MVP and he was interviewed after he said,
[5:48] Speaker 1: we came back on the Grizzlies because their butts were
[5:51] Speaker 1: too tight.
[5:52] Speaker 3: It's a good that's a good quote.
[5:53] Speaker 2: It's a good quote for summer league. That's a really
[5:56] Speaker 2: good quote. So I debated that.
[5:57] Speaker 1: I debated, as Lebron still making his decision, should we
[6:02] Speaker 1: just go over his career the best moments of his
[6:04] Speaker 1: career is Nah, let's take it off the court with Lebron.
[6:08] Speaker 1: I wanted to look at everything, you know, the whole
[6:12] Speaker 1: breadth of it, just to consider everything that he has
[6:15] Speaker 1: done off the court, because it's been a long time
[6:18] Speaker 1: that he's been playing, and sometimes you lose some things
[6:22] Speaker 1: with a player here in the NBA where the guy's
[6:25] Speaker 1: been around for twenty three years. So I decided, let's
[6:27] Speaker 1: look at the twenty most iconic off court moments for
[6:32] Speaker 1: Lebron through these last twenty three years. Whether it's holding
[6:37] Speaker 1: the US flag at the Olympics or Taco Tuesday, or
[6:41] Speaker 1: becoming a billionaire. We'll get to all of that, but
[6:45] Speaker 1: I want to start with him becoming a villain in
[6:48] Speaker 1: twenty ten. It's sort of chronological that we'll go through
[6:52] Speaker 1: here and we'll start in twenty ten. When the decision happened.
[6:56] Speaker 1: I don't know if you remember this CD, but it
[6:59] Speaker 1: was an hour I forget.
[7:00] Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, it was not an hour. It was
[7:02] Speaker 3: ninety minutes, it ninety I think it was ninety minutes. Really,
[7:06] Speaker 3: it felt like ninety minutes.
[7:07] Speaker 2: Yeah, ninety minutes sounds absolute nuts. I'm pretty sure it
[7:12] Speaker 2: was sixty.
[7:13] Speaker 3: I'm seeing seventy five minute ESPN special to announce he
[7:16] Speaker 3: was leaving his hometown. Seventy five minutes. That's an odd time.
[7:20] Speaker 2: That's an odd time.
[7:22] Speaker 3: Maybe I'm being misinformed here. It was long task, is
[7:25] Speaker 3: what I'm saying.
[7:26] Speaker 1: Yeah, and not only long the broadcast itself, but just
[7:30] Speaker 1: the excruciating weight to find out what he was doing,
[7:34] Speaker 1: especially for the people of Cleveland, and then for it
[7:36] Speaker 1: to be announced that he was going to make his
[7:39] Speaker 1: announcement on this TV show. Yeah now, yeah, in twenty
[7:45] Speaker 1: twenty six. It seems impossible that someone would do that,
[7:50] Speaker 1: especially somebody who's so media savvy. Yeah, and you know,
[7:54] Speaker 1: we'll get to more media savviness as the years go on.
[7:59] Speaker 1: But spend that much time sitting in front of the
[8:03] Speaker 1: Boys and Girls Club, as they had to sit awkwardly
[8:06] Speaker 1: there for so long, and you've got the fridge of
[8:09] Speaker 1: vitamin water sitting there and obvious sponsorship. I wouldn't back
[8:14] Speaker 1: and watched a chunk of it.
[8:17] Speaker 2: It was so cringey. It was just so difficult to watch.
[8:20] Speaker 1: I wonder what the mentality was back then. It was
[8:24] Speaker 1: it to soften the blow that I'm leaving Cleveland, and
[8:27] Speaker 1: this allows me to kind of elaborate and just speak
[8:33] Speaker 1: on everything. I mean, it kind of feels like, I
[8:37] Speaker 1: don't know.
[8:38] Speaker 3: It felt like he was going to try to explain himself,
[8:41] Speaker 3: but it ended up making it way worse for people.
[8:44] Speaker 3: It did raise money for charity.
[8:46] Speaker 2: Though, this is true. This is a good point.
[8:49] Speaker 3: So that's a good thing, absolutely, Yeah, but also it's
[8:54] Speaker 3: a small consolation. The Cleveland fans. They were literally getting
[8:57] Speaker 3: dumped on live television.
[8:59] Speaker 1: Yeah, and now it's sort of the absolute reference for
[9:05] Speaker 1: players how to not announce what they're doing in free agency.
[9:09] Speaker 1: He just absolutely cannot do this any corrected himself years later,
[9:14] Speaker 1: But that's what this is. I think now it's just
[9:17] Speaker 1: a reference point how not to do it. Yeah, you
[9:20] Speaker 1: just ripped the band aid off. That's what it comes
[9:22] Speaker 1: down to.
[9:23] Speaker 3: That's right. He fell off the horse, So the rest
[9:25] Speaker 3: of people, they'll avoid falling off the horse, right right, right,
[9:30] Speaker 3: getting the horse. Okay, we're done talking about horses.
[9:34] Speaker 1: Yeah, we're done talking about that moment, but we you know,
[9:38] Speaker 1: stay chronologically. The villain at number two of these twenty
[9:42] Speaker 1: moments remains because later that year, he announced, well, he
[9:49] Speaker 1: was part of the Heat press conference where the whole
[9:54] Speaker 1: thing happened with him and Wade and Bosh, where they
[9:57] Speaker 1: introduced themselves and how many titles they were gonna win,
[10:01] Speaker 1: not one, not two, not three, not four, not five,
[10:03] Speaker 1: not six, not seven.
[10:04] Speaker 2: Ah, And obviously they didn't do that.
[10:09] Speaker 1: And I wonder if he didn't do the decision months earlier,
[10:11] Speaker 1: if this still keeps him as a villain, if this
[10:15] Speaker 1: event is strictly an indicator of how much of a
[10:18] Speaker 1: villain he was, you know, it's become less of a
[10:21] Speaker 1: villain if he didn't have that whole right decision part
[10:26] Speaker 1: and part I would assume, Yeah, I.
[10:28] Speaker 3: Mean, look, correct me if I'm wrong. But this was
[10:32] Speaker 3: sort of the almost rock concert event, right right right?
[10:35] Speaker 2: Yeah, I call that a press conference, but really but.
[10:37] Speaker 3: It's like there were like smoke machines. I don't even remember.
[10:41] Speaker 3: That's how it is in my mind, Like, yeah, there
[10:43] Speaker 3: lashing lights, a dark stage, you know, smoke machines going off,
[10:48] Speaker 3: Chris Bosh flexing and doing his like scream, right, that's
[10:51] Speaker 3: where this was said. Yes, you could argue that he
[10:54] Speaker 3: got caught up in the moment, right, but also you
[10:57] Speaker 3: know they're trotting out this super team you know, which,
[11:03] Speaker 3: Uh it just felt tone off, I guess. And also
[11:06] Speaker 3: it's ridiculous to try to guarantee over seven.
[11:12] Speaker 2: Hey, it was just seven, wasn't over?
[11:15] Speaker 3: He stopped.
[11:16] Speaker 2: He stopped at seven?
[11:16] Speaker 3: Okay, so seven? Yeah, I mean it made it to
[11:19] Speaker 3: four finals one two of them, so that's not terrible.
[11:23] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[11:24] Speaker 1: Yeah, did winning two titles shut people up about his
[11:27] Speaker 1: seven guaranteed? No it did not. But this is memorable
[11:34] Speaker 1: in terms of yeah, just this was a time in
[11:39] Speaker 1: Lebron's career where again it was twenty ten before any
[11:42] Speaker 1: titles happened. This is the villain era of Lebron. You
[11:48] Speaker 1: flashed me back when you said the smoke machines. That's
[11:51] Speaker 1: all I could think of was when I was in Yellowstone,
[11:55] Speaker 1: they call it the Dragon's mouth, one of the guysers,
[12:00] Speaker 1: one of the where the volcanoes are spewing essentially, or
[12:04] Speaker 1: spewing the water and the smoke and everything coming from underground.
[12:10] Speaker 1: It looked like a smoke machine. Watching the Dragon's mouth
[12:13] Speaker 1: is what they call it. Anyways, those are more memorable
[12:16] Speaker 1: moments than riding a horse. But anyway, I needed to
[12:20] Speaker 1: reference that because you gotta go, you gotta do it.
[12:24] Speaker 2: Okay, number three, it's the return. Things changed.
[12:30] Speaker 1: Very much so for Lebron go from villain to returning
[12:34] Speaker 1: with an essay that he wrote in twenty fourteen titled
[12:38] Speaker 1: I'm Coming Home tell in Cleveland. Yeah, I messed up,
[12:43] Speaker 1: but I shall rectify everything that I did. Total reversal
[12:48] Speaker 1: and tone and format from the decision. Obviously it was quiet.
[12:53] Speaker 1: It was the first person essay, and it was his
[12:57] Speaker 1: redemption arc. The line that stands out is quote in
[13:02] Speaker 1: Northeast Ohio, nothing is given, everything is earned. I'm ready
[13:06] Speaker 1: to accept the challenge. I'm coming home. And that's the
[13:11] Speaker 1: extent of it. Him and Lee Jenkins wrote this thing
[13:15] Speaker 1: on s I.
[13:17] Speaker 3: Explicitly writing I'm not guaranteeing a championship.
[13:21] Speaker 2: All I forgot about?
[13:22] Speaker 3: Did he I'm asking No, there's no chance he didn't,
[13:27] Speaker 3: but there's no chance that he guarantees exact Yeah. Yeah, yeah,
[13:30] Speaker 3: I think he says I'm not promising a championship or
[13:33] Speaker 3: something like that.
[13:35] Speaker 2: Thank you. Yeah, that would make sense.
[13:37] Speaker 1: That's a total redemption, total switch up, total total change.
[13:41] Speaker 3: He learned his lesson. I love a journey, I love
[13:45] Speaker 3: redemption stories, and this is kind of the beginning of
[13:50] Speaker 3: his right.
[13:50] Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yeah, yeah, that's why I included it. I
[13:53] Speaker 1: knew you you love the redemption story. Yeah, this is it.
[13:57] Speaker 1: So moving on from there, it's a two building the
[14:02] Speaker 1: empire events for Lebron that stand out, and let me
[14:06] Speaker 1: know what I missed here. We'll get to more of
[14:08] Speaker 1: the fun off the court stuff. But I had to
[14:13] Speaker 1: include some financial and money decisions that he made first.
[14:19] Speaker 1: I had totally forgotten about this, but it is monumental
[14:23] Speaker 1: in twenty fourteen the Beats by Dre payout that he
[14:29] Speaker 1: received because when Apple acquired Beats by Drey in twenty
[14:31] Speaker 1: fourteen for three billion, Lebron famously had made an estimated
[14:36] Speaker 1: thirty million dollars in cash in twenty fourteen. It's a
[14:39] Speaker 1: lot of money. Thirteen fourteen, his salary was nineteen million,
[14:44] Speaker 1: sixty seven, five hundred dollars, so he received thirty million dollars.
[14:49] Speaker 1: But it's not just that he had a one percent
[14:50] Speaker 1: equity stake and Beats company years earlier in exchange for
[14:53] Speaker 1: promoting the headphones, and so that kind of set a
[14:58] Speaker 1: new standard for athlete business ventures. You invest in things
[15:03] Speaker 1: rather than just you know, make money.
[15:05] Speaker 2: Off of it.
[15:06] Speaker 1: It's kind of what our former colleague Shaquille O'Neil did
[15:09] Speaker 1: as well, always making sure he had equity in the
[15:14] Speaker 1: general or Yeah, so that's similar here. He made thirty
[15:18] Speaker 1: million dollars in cash plus whatever equity stake he had.
[15:22] Speaker 1: According to Kendrick Perkins in an interview in twenty twenty,
[15:26] Speaker 1: he said Lebron made seven hundred million dollars in this
[15:33] Speaker 1: hole Beats by dre purchased by Apple promotion deal. Now,
[15:39] Speaker 1: the seven hundred million sounds absolutely nuts. I can't really
[15:43] Speaker 1: quantify how many dollars or dollars, you know, as a
[15:47] Speaker 1: non billionaires, a non millionaire, you know.
[15:49] Speaker 2: But still this is just.
[15:54] Speaker 1: Important for him and other athletes who, yeah, aren't going
[15:58] Speaker 1: to make as much as Lebron, but have a guide
[16:01] Speaker 1: here in Lebron James.
[16:04] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean Apple bought beats for three billion I think. Yeah,
[16:10] Speaker 3: so whatever he ended up. So he he you're saying
[16:14] Speaker 3: he made seven hundred million off of that.
[16:16] Speaker 2: Deal, Yeah, well he was.
[16:18] Speaker 1: He had a one percent equity stake, so he made
[16:20] Speaker 1: thirty million, according in cash, but yes, according to Kendrick Perkins,
[16:24] Speaker 1: because of the promotional side of things and how much
[16:31] Speaker 1: he had in equity stake, It's really just a very
[16:35] Speaker 1: generic number that he threw out there. Sure it feels
[16:38] Speaker 1: like it doesn't feel doesn't feel real, but all in all,
[16:43] Speaker 1: as yeah, Dre was paid paid three billion dollars or
[16:48] Speaker 1: the business was paid three billion dollars. Apparently Lebron received that.
[16:53] Speaker 1: It doesn't really make a whole lot of sense for
[16:56] Speaker 1: him to receive that much money.
[17:00] Speaker 3: The math isn't mathing in my mind. But also, I
[17:03] Speaker 3: mean it's possible, and you know he he didn't invest
[17:09] Speaker 3: any money in beats, right, it was simply his endorsement,
[17:13] Speaker 3: which is it's crazy that that amount of money for
[17:16] Speaker 3: wearing a pair of decent headphones. I'm not going to
[17:20] Speaker 3: say their top of the line, but decent and they
[17:24] Speaker 3: looked cool at the time, all right.
[17:27] Speaker 2: I like that.
[17:28] Speaker 1: I like this information that's behind the scenes, not the
[17:31] Speaker 1: best of the best.
[17:32] Speaker 3: I don't know, they're a little they will lean too
[17:35] Speaker 3: much into the bass end of stuff, you know. I
[17:38] Speaker 3: remember people putting beats on and going oooh the basse.
[17:41] Speaker 3: I'm like yeah, but you know, there's more than just
[17:44] Speaker 3: a bass in music. I want to hear all of it,
[17:48] Speaker 3: not just the bass, So you never put them on.
[17:51] Speaker 3: My kids have beats and I've yeah, I never. I
[17:56] Speaker 3: never got into the beats thing. But look, I trust
[17:59] Speaker 3: doctor Dre. But also you love Doctor Dre. Love Doctor
[18:02] Speaker 3: Dre absolutely, but his hipphones are they don't. They don't
[18:08] Speaker 3: meet the same standards as his production.
[18:11] Speaker 1: In my opinion, I appreciate it and that no need
[18:17] Speaker 1: to pat ourselves on the back, but I do. I
[18:19] Speaker 1: am curious because I'm referencing our days at NBA TV.
[18:22] Speaker 2: Did we receive some you.
[18:25] Speaker 3: Guys might have at I can at any party.
[18:30] Speaker 1: Nah, we didn't. We didn't get it. No, I don't
[18:34] Speaker 1: think so. We got the JBL speaker. I don't think
[18:37] Speaker 1: we did anyway, I guess I'm not patting ourselves on
[18:41] Speaker 1: the back, and we never got them.
[18:43] Speaker 3: I would we pat ourselves on the back for getting
[18:45] Speaker 3: free ship.
[18:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fine, all right?
[18:51] Speaker 3: Moving on.
[18:52] Speaker 1: Lebron signed a lifetime deal with the Nike in twenty fifteen.
[19:00] Speaker 1: As simple as that, It's just that glorious for him.
[19:05] Speaker 1: It is such an achievement, A lifetime deal.
[19:08] Speaker 2: I mean.
[19:11] Speaker 1: What it does mean the Nike bet on him as
[19:13] Speaker 1: an institution, not just a player. Over a decade before
[19:17] Speaker 1: this Nike era conversation was happening in ernest apparently, and
[19:23] Speaker 1: it peaked in twenty fifteen. I guess winning does everything,
[19:27] Speaker 1: because he had won two titles recently before that, or
[19:31] Speaker 1: maybe it's just because he was Lebron. But a lifetime
[19:33] Speaker 1: deal is a lifetime deal, So that achievement that he
[19:37] Speaker 1: always said he had an aspiration and love, a desire
[19:43] Speaker 1: to be involved with Nike and admired it, so simple
[19:47] Speaker 1: as that. Just a quick one there, because there's a
[19:50] Speaker 1: you know, a couple of those building the empire moments
[19:53] Speaker 1: for Lebron that were important.
[19:56] Speaker 3: What do you think the contract actually says like this
[20:00] Speaker 3: expires when you die, because now with like holograms and stuff,
[20:07] Speaker 3: you could and AI and whatever else just just CGI
[20:12] Speaker 3: and in general, he could be endorsing Nikes after he passes.
[20:18] Speaker 1: In theory, absolutely, but you know so many, so many
[20:23] Speaker 1: like Michael Jackson's and you know his estate, that kind
[20:27] Speaker 1: of thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I don't know. This was
[20:30] Speaker 1: signed in twenty fifteen. Does that play a part in that?
[20:34] Speaker 2: It was.
[20:36] Speaker 1: Maybe a little bit earlier. I don't know. Great question, that's.
[20:41] Speaker 3: A really good question. I've never signed a lifetime deal
[20:43] Speaker 3: other than I suppose getting married. Well that said explicitly
[20:47] Speaker 3: in the contract.
[20:50] Speaker 1: Well, you're right, it it definitely should. Yeah, that you
[20:56] Speaker 1: or your you know, your estate will continue to receive finances,
[21:03] Speaker 1: you know, the benefits of selling everything, you know.
[21:08] Speaker 2: I guess I probably. I say it's maybe too early,
[21:11] Speaker 2: but why would it be too early? I changed my mind.
[21:14] Speaker 2: Maybe As far as holograms go, well.
[21:17] Speaker 3: I don't know, or you know, yeah, right, like putting
[21:20] Speaker 3: classic Lebron in like the twenty seventy five Nikes, you
[21:27] Speaker 3: know what I mean?
[21:28] Speaker 2: Yi, Yeah, Yeah, that's a good point.
[21:31] Speaker 3: Anyway, they still sell Chuck Taylor's.
[21:33] Speaker 2: Right, So there's a lot of things, just a thought.
[21:39] Speaker 3: I don't know.
[21:40] Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right, it has to be in there, all right.
[21:44] Speaker 1: Moving on to media production now, I'm going to start
[21:49] Speaker 1: this with a more funny thing that we always remember
[21:54] Speaker 1: with Lebron James before getting into his TV and production,
[22:01] Speaker 1: because I think this is the social media thing that is.
[22:05] Speaker 2: Best known for Lebron. It's Tacco Tuesday.
[22:12] Speaker 1: Now, am I kind of forgetting banana boat and all that. Yeah, yeah,
[22:18] Speaker 1: but I think this is more important. I love actually
[22:22] Speaker 1: it recently heard Channing Fry, his former teammates, say, Lebron
[22:26] Speaker 1: stole that from me. I used to sit when we
[22:30] Speaker 1: were getting served food and we had options, and I
[22:34] Speaker 1: always picked the burrito. And he said to me, you
[22:36] Speaker 1: always picked the burrito, and I said, yeah.
[22:39] Speaker 2: It's tacco Tuesday. But then he did.
[22:43] Speaker 1: He did say Lebron made it more popular. You know,
[22:47] Speaker 1: he did it in a different way, better way. But
[22:50] Speaker 1: I like hearing that it's tacout Tuesday.
[22:51] Speaker 2: Though. To me, that that trump's everything.
[22:56] Speaker 1: Else as far as he did social media wise, that's
[22:59] Speaker 1: the one thing that stands out to me over Yeah,
[23:02] Speaker 1: it's the banana boat or I can't believe this is
[23:05] Speaker 1: my life. This can live forever, This can live past
[23:10] Speaker 1: the day he dies JD.
[23:12] Speaker 2: I think this can live.
[23:13] Speaker 3: For I think so you talk about Tuesday is here
[23:15] Speaker 3: to stay. This is Lebron at his most charming in
[23:20] Speaker 3: social media. There there is no more likable clip of
[23:25] Speaker 3: Lebron James on social media in my opinion, you know,
[23:30] Speaker 3: And it's great because the whole point of it seems
[23:34] Speaker 3: to be to embarrass his kids and family, right because
[23:39] Speaker 3: He's going around the room getting everybody to say, talk
[23:42] Speaker 3: about Tuesday and and he's great. It's just like a
[23:45] Speaker 3: dad being a dad. And it's the most humanizing clip
[23:50] Speaker 3: of Lebron James. I think, yeah that I can think
[23:53] Speaker 3: of off the top of my head.
[23:54] Speaker 2: Right, that's a good way to put it. It is
[23:57] Speaker 2: and yeah speaks to all dad out there they should
[24:01] Speaker 2: be doing, should be doing the same, embarrassing their kids.
[24:03] Speaker 2: As you say, exactly, do you do a good job
[24:05] Speaker 2: of it? Jad?
[24:06] Speaker 3: I think, I try, I try. My heart is you do?
[24:09] Speaker 2: You do? You do a good job? Like okay? Moving
[24:13] Speaker 2: on to.
[24:14] Speaker 1: Athlete controlled media, Lebron has made that a part of
[24:20] Speaker 1: who he is and has been a leader on that
[24:25] Speaker 1: side of things. He launched Interrupted in twenty fourteen that
[24:28] Speaker 1: later became part of spring Hill Company, which Lebron founded.
[24:31] Speaker 1: Later on, Uninterrupted his athlete empowerment brand featuring videos from
[24:36] Speaker 1: the athletes perspective, original series, podcasts, and docs. Their YouTube
[24:42] Speaker 1: channel is humongous and features players in so many different
[24:47] Speaker 1: ways like Lou Williams shaving here, here's Drake, Tianna Taylor,
[24:55] Speaker 1: the whole deal. It's really really big. And then transferring
[24:58] Speaker 1: to founding the spring Hill Company, which produces shows on Stars, NBC,
[25:03] Speaker 1: in Showtime, Brown producing stuff. It even produces The Wall
[25:07] Speaker 1: on NBC with Chris Hardwick. Have you ever watched an
[25:10] Speaker 1: episode of The Wall?
[25:12] Speaker 2: No, JD.
[25:12] Speaker 3: I didn't even know Chris Hardwick was still in the game.
[25:15] Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah cool. Yep.
[25:19] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the sorta plinko that type of thing. Yeah
[25:24] Speaker 1: right right, yeah. So it's a good one. It's a
[25:27] Speaker 1: fun one, and that's why it's lived on for a
[25:29] Speaker 1: long time. The Wall has been on TV for long,
[25:33] Speaker 1: so yeah, he'll be getting paid forever. Since twenty sixteen,
[25:40] Speaker 1: so a decade. Okay, Moving on to part of the
[25:45] Speaker 1: spring Hill Company. It's HBO's the shop. We're sitting there,
[25:50] Speaker 1: we're just talking shop in the barbershop, just people talking
[25:54] Speaker 1: about whatever. It's obviously had eight ton of people who
[26:00] Speaker 1: come on and been part of it. I did see
[26:04] Speaker 1: these three people on one episode, or I saw that
[26:07] Speaker 1: they were on an episode. I'd watch Fat Joe, Amy
[26:10] Speaker 1: Schumer and Don Lemon. I am I'm curious of that
[26:13] Speaker 1: old dynamic. That's an interesting one. Amy, she is going
[26:18] Speaker 1: to get another shoutow later on shout Out. She will
[26:22] Speaker 1: be mentioned later on, But anyways, HBO is the shop
[26:26] Speaker 1: something that Lebron just wanted to do, and obviously it's
[26:28] Speaker 1: it's been on for a long time, so yes, the
[26:32] Speaker 1: whole athlete controlled media. I think this is the most
[26:37] Speaker 1: prominent thing that he's he's done as far as producing
[26:42] Speaker 1: a show that will live on or sort of been
[26:47] Speaker 1: in the the athlete mold form that he wanted to
[26:53] Speaker 1: and that any athlete.
[26:54] Speaker 2: Kind of wants to.
[26:55] Speaker 1: You know, we're just talking sports here. Draymond's been on everybody.
[26:58] Speaker 1: A lot of people have been on it, right.
[27:00] Speaker 3: This is a pitch that people have made countless times
[27:03] Speaker 3: over the years. Put it in a barber shop, you know, let's.
[27:08] Speaker 2: Let's just chop it up.
[27:09] Speaker 3: But it's never been executed like this, and it was
[27:13] Speaker 3: actually successful. So he actually pulled it off because it's
[27:16] Speaker 3: actually hard to do just a free flowing conversation like that,
[27:21] Speaker 3: and they he did it incredibly well, and kudos to him.
[27:30] Speaker 2: You know, yeah, that's its simple as that.
[27:32] Speaker 1: It's a good way to put it all right, Moving
[27:34] Speaker 1: on to Lebron the activist, two events stand out, the
[27:40] Speaker 1: shut Up and Dribble clap back in twenty eighteen, after
[27:45] Speaker 1: Lebron and Durant. They had to sit down interview with
[27:47] Speaker 1: Kerrie Champion where they were critical of President Trump. Fox's
[27:51] Speaker 1: Laura Ingram told him to shut up and dribble, and
[27:55] Speaker 1: Lebron turned it into a title for a nine episode
[27:58] Speaker 1: doc he executive produced on Showtime. So that kind of
[28:03] Speaker 1: full circle response from an athlete is again similar to
[28:11] Speaker 1: what I said. It's a leader. I say, here, you
[28:13] Speaker 1: gigglin over there.
[28:15] Speaker 3: I just love I think I read somewhere he took
[28:19] Speaker 3: her insult and turned it into intellectual property, you know,
[28:23] Speaker 3: which is awesome. It's like the best revenge.
[28:25] Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, yeah, he did that. And what I was
[28:32] Speaker 1: surprised was here moving to the tenth of our twenty
[28:36] Speaker 1: Moments where he feuded publicly with Donald Trump. It was
[28:41] Speaker 1: an infamous tweet. It was back in twenty seventeen. It
[28:45] Speaker 1: was about the Warriors not going to the White House.
[28:49] Speaker 1: I was surprised that he still has this up. Kudos
[28:52] Speaker 1: to him for keeping it up.
[28:53] Speaker 3: You bum.
[28:54] Speaker 1: Yes, yes, Lebron tweeted, quote you bum. Stephen Curry already
[28:59] Speaker 1: said he ain't so therefore ain't no invite. Going to
[29:03] Speaker 1: White House was a great honor until you showed up,
[29:07] Speaker 1: and he kept that up, and then he turned that
[29:09] Speaker 1: public feud into organized action. He founded More Than a
[29:13] Speaker 1: Vote in twenty twenty, again responding the way he wanted
[29:18] Speaker 1: to respond and creating a clapback for himself.
[29:25] Speaker 2: As simple as that.
[29:26] Speaker 1: Those two things there as far as his activism goes,
[29:29] Speaker 1: even though there will be more, and there is one
[29:32] Speaker 1: here with more of a legacy activism. In twenty eighteen,
[29:38] Speaker 1: or eleventh of twenty things that Lebron did off the court,
[29:42] Speaker 1: he opened the I Promise School in Akron in twenty eighteen,
[29:47] Speaker 1: which was same time he was leaving Cleveland to go
[29:51] Speaker 1: to la but he had already planned to open this
[29:53] Speaker 1: I designed specifically to help at risk students by providing
[29:58] Speaker 1: specialized STEM curriculums, extended school years, and comprehensive family wrap
[30:03] Speaker 1: around support. And as Lebron said, he started it with
[30:10] Speaker 1: two hundred and forty kids, one hundred and twenty and
[30:12] Speaker 1: third grade and one hundred and twenty in fourth grade.
[30:16] Speaker 1: And as he said, quote, I believe that's where it
[30:18] Speaker 1: all kind of starts, and that's where it started for me.
[30:20] Speaker 1: You know, fourth grade, I missed eighty days of school
[30:24] Speaker 1: end quote. So he made sure that this I promise
[30:27] Speaker 1: school was there an Akron to support kids, So that
[30:31] Speaker 1: will live on forever, I'm sure for a very very
[30:36] Speaker 1: long time. So good for Lebron to do that. And
[30:39] Speaker 1: there's the activism portion of the twenty list, but he's
[30:45] Speaker 1: done so much, as you said, even during the decision,
[30:49] Speaker 1: JD Human, it's not activism. But yeah, the charity giving back.
[30:52] Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, they got bikes at this school. What I think,
[30:57] Speaker 3: I think so I think for kids to get to school,
[31:01] Speaker 3: to get to some of the kids, they just getting bikes.
[31:03] Speaker 2: Yeah, isn't that's a wonderful thing. It's a wonderful thing.
[31:06] Speaker 1: In America, especially where there's a lot of drop offs
[31:10] Speaker 1: in carpools if you can't get there because it's too far,
[31:15] Speaker 1: which is annoying. Yeah, so yes, this is It's awesome
[31:19] Speaker 1: seeing a kid ride to school or right right anywhere and.
[31:23] Speaker 3: Like take off their helmet so old school. I love it.
[31:26] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's so cool and they're so in control. That's
[31:29] Speaker 1: that is awesome. Number twelve of our twenty points here
[31:35] Speaker 1: the pregame tribute to Kobe Bryant. After Kobe Bryant's passing
[31:39] Speaker 1: in twenty twenty, while he was with Lebron was with
[31:42] Speaker 1: the Lakers. I felt this was one of his raws
[31:46] Speaker 1: moments where he put the speech down and just talked
[31:52] Speaker 1: and there was support and love for Kobe, you know,
[31:59] Speaker 1: and also every one else who passed in that helicopter.
[32:01] Speaker 1: He mentioned it before he got into what Kobe meant to.
[32:06] Speaker 2: Him, and.
[32:09] Speaker 1: You know, it's not something that he had to do,
[32:13] Speaker 1: but he chose to do it. And I thought he
[32:16] Speaker 1: did a good job of just just being Lebron, being himself,
[32:23] Speaker 1: swearing at the end of it, just just being himself again.
[32:26] Speaker 1: So yeah, that's one of those moments where Lebron was Lebron.
[32:32] Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he he is was the face of
[32:38] Speaker 3: the Lakers, right yea, And it was like a moment
[32:44] Speaker 3: where he's rising to that responsibility, you know, in such
[32:48] Speaker 3: a genuine way. Yeah. I mean it was such an
[32:52] Speaker 3: emotional time, right, I mean it was awful, awful tragedy,
[32:57] Speaker 3: and he was able to put it into words and
[33:02] Speaker 3: and just be a true leader in that moment.
[33:06] Speaker 1: So yeah, it was great, Yes, Yes, And that was
[33:11] Speaker 1: yes days after Kobe passing on on the Sunday. This
[33:15] Speaker 1: was on the Thursday, I'm pretty sure. And yeah, after
[33:22] Speaker 1: everyone trying to wrap their head around what what what is?
[33:27] Speaker 1: What happened on that Sunday Lebron stepped up and grabbed
[33:30] Speaker 1: the mic at center court and was able to do that.
[33:33] Speaker 1: That was the year that the Lakers won the championship
[33:37] Speaker 1: as well. That was uh, that was a time that
[33:42] Speaker 1: was Yeah, obviously so sad, and Lebron was able to to.
[33:47] Speaker 2: Be himself again.
[33:49] Speaker 1: He had this the speech in his hand and he said,
[33:53] Speaker 1: I'm not doing it. I'm just going to try and
[33:55] Speaker 1: talk from the heart, and he did for several minutes. Okay,
[33:59] Speaker 1: moving on to Hollywood, Lebron, We've got a couple of
[34:02] Speaker 1: moments here where we're very important. You start in space Jam.
[34:07] Speaker 1: The second one.
[34:10] Speaker 3: Space is very important, very important.
[34:12] Speaker 1: Yeah, this is the the handoff of the torch, Michael
[34:16] Speaker 1: handing off the torch to Lebron. James, this is your
[34:19] Speaker 1: space Jam. Now you know it wasn't quite the first one.
[34:24] Speaker 3: But that's not Lebron's fault.
[34:27] Speaker 2: No, I don't think. Tell me more.
[34:29] Speaker 3: Well, I think Lebron was fine in the film.
[34:31] Speaker 2: He was.
[34:31] Speaker 3: It was just a terrible, terrible movie. That's it.
[34:36] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it was. It was.
[34:38] Speaker 1: There's too much from what I remember on Lebron and
[34:45] Speaker 1: his kid in that part of it, you know, like
[34:48] Speaker 1: there just wasn't enough of a plot. Don Cheetah was
[34:52] Speaker 1: all right.
[34:54] Speaker 3: Yeah. But also this is not the performers, this is
[34:59] Speaker 3: the direct and writing, and there were a lot of
[35:02] Speaker 3: hands in this pot. It felt like making the film. Yeah.
[35:05] Speaker 1: I included this as one of the twenty Memorable moments
[35:10] Speaker 1: for Lebron over even better performances that he's had in
[35:14] Speaker 1: better movies that he's had like train Wreck. Yeah, with
[35:18] Speaker 1: Schumer and Hater, he was good. He was funny, like.
[35:22] Speaker 3: There's there are commercials that he's in that he's hilarious.
[35:25] Speaker 3: And you know, we had very high hopes. I remember
[35:29] Speaker 3: going into Space Jam a new Legacy and see I
[35:34] Speaker 3: was convinced that he no no, no, I mean like us,
[35:37] Speaker 3: we were gonna watch it because they streamed it. It
[35:40] Speaker 3: was pandemic still, so it was in the theaters, but
[35:43] Speaker 3: it was streaming on HBO Max the same day, as
[35:46] Speaker 3: I remember, Okay, and I had such high hopes for
[35:51] Speaker 3: it because they had all of the Warner Brothers catalog
[35:55] Speaker 3: to go off of, you know, to you know, they
[35:58] Speaker 3: had like clockwork orange characters on the sideline, stuff like that,
[36:02] Speaker 3: which was crazy and creative and stuff, but also none
[36:06] Speaker 3: of that really came came through in the end. It
[36:10] Speaker 3: was just sort of these weird little cameos and stuff.
[36:14] Speaker 3: But Lebron himself has shown himself to be a good performer,
[36:20] Speaker 3: and we were thinking that he's going to surpass Michael
[36:23] Speaker 3: Jordan in terms of acting, which is not that hard
[36:26] Speaker 3: to do, let's be honest, But Michael Jordan is Michael Jordan.
[36:29] Speaker 3: And you know, the unfortunate thing is Lebron was better
[36:33] Speaker 3: playing himself in train Wreck than he was in Space
[36:38] Speaker 3: chap which is disappointing.
[36:42] Speaker 1: Yeah, you reminded me of all those those cameos, the
[36:45] Speaker 1: little easter egg type things that were in it. But yeah,
[36:49] Speaker 1: it was unfortunate that the movie wasn't fantastic. Still makes
[36:55] Speaker 1: the list, and so does this other memoir turn film
[37:00] Speaker 1: about his high school teammates at Saint Vincent Saint Mary
[37:03] Speaker 1: Shooting Stars, because this is where he came from and
[37:08] Speaker 1: in this was twenty twenty three if I have my
[37:12] Speaker 1: dates right, and he decided to get his high school
[37:17] Speaker 1: teammates essentially as actors. At what I had forgotten, Scoot
[37:22] Speaker 1: Henderson was played or played I should say, Romeo Travis,
[37:27] Speaker 1: his teammates Scoot Henderson, Jed Howard played Carmel Anthony, and
[37:32] Speaker 1: Wood Harris played Lebron's coach Drew Joyce. The second So
[37:39] Speaker 1: I had not just.
[37:40] Speaker 3: Heard of this until I saw it in the dock
[37:42] Speaker 3: this morning.
[37:43] Speaker 1: Yeah, i'd forgotten about it too. I have not watched
[37:46] Speaker 1: it neither Sorrus. So yeah, it's more put it on
[37:52] Speaker 1: thumb war you can watch it. Yeah, sure, why not?
[37:56] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's.
[37:59] Speaker 1: Does it matter that it wasn't an extremely prominent movie
[38:03] Speaker 1: that people didn't know a ton about it?
[38:05] Speaker 2: I don't think it matters.
[38:07] Speaker 1: In the end, you created something for essentially for his
[38:10] Speaker 1: teammates and where he came from. He probably wanted to
[38:14] Speaker 1: be bigger.
[38:15] Speaker 2: But in the end.
[38:18] Speaker 1: It's part of I think the twenty memorable things that
[38:21] Speaker 1: he did. Even if as you didn't know about it,
[38:24] Speaker 1: like you didn't know about it, I'm sure a lot
[38:26] Speaker 1: of people didn't know about it.
[38:27] Speaker 3: But why release it in twenty twenty three, you know,
[38:30] Speaker 3: like this is an authorized biography. You're still in the league, man, Like,
[38:35] Speaker 3: why not wait until you retire and then it's going
[38:39] Speaker 3: to have more legs, more pop It's easier to promote
[38:43] Speaker 3: it after he's retired.
[38:45] Speaker 2: You know what I mean, You're not wrong, So that's
[38:47] Speaker 2: a good question. That's a very good question.
[38:50] Speaker 3: I don't know.
[38:51] Speaker 1: Let's write these down. Let's ask Maverick Carter what up
[38:55] Speaker 1: with that? Moving to fifteen of our twenty moment, it's
[39:00] Speaker 1: here billionaire status. This one's simple because we don't know
[39:08] Speaker 1: anything about being a billionaire. But he became the first
[39:12] Speaker 1: active NBA billionaire in twenty twenty two.
[39:17] Speaker 2: That's an end of statement. That's impressive.
[39:23] Speaker 1: And moving on to the next one, which is tied in,
[39:27] Speaker 1: he bought an ownership steak in Liverpool FC. Again not
[39:32] Speaker 1: just rich, but a stakeholder in other institutions. So it's
[39:36] Speaker 1: for other athletes to model their enterprise after even if
[39:39] Speaker 1: they aren't going to be billionaires. He originally purchased a
[39:42] Speaker 1: minority share in twenty eleven for about six point five
[39:46] Speaker 1: million through his marketing agencies deal with Fenway Sports Group,
[39:50] Speaker 1: and in twenty twenty one, Lebron and Maverick Carter traded
[39:53] Speaker 1: their initial soccer shares for a one percent stake in
[39:56] Speaker 1: Fenway Sports Group as a whole. This gave Lebron ownership
[40:00] Speaker 1: ties not just to Liverpool, but also to the Boston
[40:03] Speaker 1: Red Sox, the Pittsburgh Penguins and other FSG assets.
[40:11] Speaker 3: FSG is Fenway Sports Group.
[40:13] Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, and they got a stake in all those things.
[40:17] Speaker 1: I just meant all those teams that I just mentioned
[40:20] Speaker 1: and a lot of stuff. So yeah, simple as that.
[40:25] Speaker 3: I'm mogul.
[40:26] Speaker 2: I'm mogul.
[40:28] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[40:29] Speaker 1: I mentioned Shack as the guy who's got his hands
[40:31] Speaker 1: in everything, like Magic Johnson even before him, Lebron has
[40:37] Speaker 1: taken it to another notch in modern media ownership and production.
[40:42] Speaker 1: Let's get to seventeen of our number, seventeen of our
[40:45] Speaker 1: twenty moments. This was it's a little bit on the court.
[40:49] Speaker 1: But I couldn't help that.
[40:51] Speaker 3: That's the court.
[40:52] Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, but yes, I had to. I had to.
[40:57] Speaker 2: It's it's the record, it's the d had.
[40:59] Speaker 3: To have twenty.
[41:00] Speaker 1: I had to have twenty. Well, at first I had more.
[41:02] Speaker 1: I tied it to twenty three seasons. Got to have
[41:04] Speaker 1: twenty three moments, Okay, but you know I trimmed a few.
[41:09] Speaker 1: I collabed a couple. This one, you know, it isn't
[41:14] Speaker 1: so much about the play where Thomas Bryant was calling
[41:18] Speaker 1: for the ball down low and Lebron saidn't ask it.
[41:21] Speaker 1: I'm going to hit the shot. It's always forgotten. Thomas
[41:23] Speaker 1: Bryant did celebrate right after, but he was kind of
[41:26] Speaker 1: playing basketball and thought that he should be able to
[41:28] Speaker 1: score on a smaller player. But anyway, he got the
[41:32] Speaker 1: record there in twenty twenty three, hit that jumper, play stopped.
[41:36] Speaker 1: The captain gave him the ball, Kareem Abdul Jabbar gave
[41:39] Speaker 1: him the ball as he passed him. Lebron spoke on
[41:42] Speaker 1: the mic, mentioned the late David Stern, and it was
[41:50] Speaker 1: just a wonderful moment. He had his son, who he
[41:53] Speaker 1: would later play with, filming from the sideline. Bronnie looked
[41:58] Speaker 1: like such a kid like film everything. And also another
[42:03] Speaker 1: moment where it felt like Lebron was just being himself,
[42:08] Speaker 1: thanking his family and thinking everybody who contributed to it,
[42:15] Speaker 1: and also said quote, fuck man, thank you guys.
[42:19] Speaker 2: You know another swear. I always got to appreciate.
[42:22] Speaker 1: That when he was just himself, and you can see
[42:25] Speaker 1: I could see as he said, fuck man, remember a
[42:29] Speaker 1: person who works with the NBA immediately smiled as he
[42:32] Speaker 1: swore right behind him because.
[42:35] Speaker 2: He was just being himself.
[42:36] Speaker 1: So yeah, it's a sneaky basketball one in there, But
[42:40] Speaker 1: to me, it was more about the moment, the moment,
[42:45] Speaker 1: the whole thing. We are talking about a basketball player.
[42:47] Speaker 1: You got the record, and then during the SP's that
[42:50] Speaker 1: year he was awarded because he became the all time
[42:55] Speaker 1: leading scorer, and then he was on the mic there.
[42:58] Speaker 1: That's something I trimmed out all times when he he
[43:01] Speaker 1: spoke at the SP's. But yeah, there's that one great moment. Yeah,
[43:07] Speaker 1: I'm moving on to a few here as we end it.
[43:09] Speaker 1: A couple surrounding the Olympics and his family because in
[43:15] Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, he carried the US flag at the
[43:19] Speaker 1: opening ceremonies, the first basketball player as far as males go,
[43:26] Speaker 1: to do that, which was a very nice moment. Of course,
[43:31] Speaker 1: you were watching the opening ceremony, JD on that on
[43:36] Speaker 1: that rainy boat, Lebron holding that flag, and yeah, it's
[43:41] Speaker 1: kind of a full circle from the eight Redeemed Team
[43:45] Speaker 1: era that he was a part of as well, so
[43:49] Speaker 1: him bringing the USA back from the four Olympics and
[43:53] Speaker 1: of course losing to Greece in the six World Championship
[43:57] Speaker 1: Fever Cup now it's called Yeah, I'm sure we'll talk
[44:01] Speaker 1: about that later. It's a twenty year anniversary in wow,
[44:04] Speaker 1: six weeks.
[44:05] Speaker 3: Wow.
[44:05] Speaker 1: Yes, but yeah, Lebron got to be the first male
[44:09] Speaker 1: US basketball player to do it. Don Staley did it
[44:12] Speaker 1: for the women in two thousand and four in Greece.
[44:16] Speaker 2: So yeah, simple as that, you get to hold the flag.
[44:21] Speaker 3: Yeah, who's he holding with Coco?
[44:24] Speaker 2: GoF Yeah?
[44:24] Speaker 3: Okay, yes? And what an Olympics for the US team
[44:30] Speaker 3: and just the Olympics in general in Paris was incredible.
[44:34] Speaker 3: Skeets Nora and I did Summer champions that year and
[44:37] Speaker 3: it was just an incredible seventeen days of amazing sports
[44:43] Speaker 3: in general. And then for the US to take the
[44:46] Speaker 3: gold the way they did, I mean, you know, just
[44:51] Speaker 3: an incredible honor and experience for him and just the
[44:57] Speaker 3: who else you know, I mean aside from Coco, but like,
[45:01] Speaker 3: who else to hold the flag in that particular. It
[45:04] Speaker 3: was just perfect And you didn't know it was going
[45:05] Speaker 3: to be perfect until the end of the Olympics, but
[45:08] Speaker 3: it was great.
[45:10] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[45:10] Speaker 1: I can't believe that's two years ago. You guys were
[45:14] Speaker 1: doing shows every single day, right, It doesn't feel like
[45:18] Speaker 1: two years ago. No, But are you excited for the
[45:22] Speaker 1: twenty eight Olympics? Here Angelos.
[45:27] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[45:27] Speaker 1: Yeah, while I was at Yellowstone and then I went
[45:31] Speaker 1: to where I was riding horses in Jackson, Wyoming. I
[45:37] Speaker 1: was reading the local newspaper there in Jackson, Wyoming, and
[45:41] Speaker 1: there's an article about freestyle skiing being introduced in the
[45:45] Speaker 1: twenty thirty Olympics. And they're excited there because they do
[45:52] Speaker 1: some some wild stuff.
[45:55] Speaker 2: They've got some really steep.
[45:57] Speaker 3: Oh, Jackson Hole is amazing ski.
[46:00] Speaker 1: Yes, it was. It was really really cool to see
[46:03] Speaker 1: all those spots going up that mountain and they're excited,
[46:07] Speaker 1: you know, for their potential athletes that could be that
[46:12] Speaker 1: have ridden their mountains, whether they're from you know, Jackson
[46:16] Speaker 1: or not, to be involved in the twenty Olympics.
[46:21] Speaker 2: So twenty thirty, twenty thirty, twenty thirty.
[46:23] Speaker 3: Freestyle freestyle was already in the Olympics.
[46:25] Speaker 1: So this one is called who is it called free ride?
[46:30] Speaker 1: It's the debut. Did I say freestyle? I meant free ride.
[46:34] Speaker 1: So it's different. It's different than freestyle. Okay, whatever that means.
[46:41] Speaker 1: If we can get into it if you want, but I.
[46:43] Speaker 3: Don't have to get into it. I'll google it later. Yeah,
[46:46] Speaker 3: we'll bring it up in the winter of champions if
[46:48] Speaker 3: we ever do that.
[46:49] Speaker 1: Yeah, but yeah, the Teat and Range mountains over there,
[46:53] Speaker 1: they're steep, and so yeah, apparently there's they're excited about
[46:57] Speaker 1: that tie into the twenty thirty Olympics. In the French shops.
[47:01] Speaker 1: Are you going?
[47:02] Speaker 3: Am I going? I hope? So I do have to say,
[47:05] Speaker 3: like when when Tom Cruise showed up at the end
[47:09] Speaker 3: of the Paris Olympics and Karen Bass was there too,
[47:13] Speaker 3: then they handed it off like this is the closing
[47:16] Speaker 3: ceremony and then we went, you know, to the beach
[47:22] Speaker 3: in La and Doctor Dre and Snoop Dogg were there.
[47:26] Speaker 3: I was kind of worried. I was worried. I'm like,
[47:28] Speaker 3: this is the Paris Olympics were so perfect. It felt like,
[47:32] Speaker 3: other than the shit in the Seine, it was it
[47:36] Speaker 3: kind of went off without a hitch and the backdrop
[47:39] Speaker 3: of Paris was so spectacular, and I was like, how's
[47:42] Speaker 3: La gonna be after Paris? But after the World Cup?
[47:45] Speaker 3: I'm pumped, but like the just the way US Mexico.
[47:50] Speaker 3: But there were games in La. I think it's gonna
[47:54] Speaker 3: be awesome. I can't wait. It's gonna be incredible.
[47:57] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a fair worry about them being able to
[48:01] Speaker 1: make it all happen. But it's not quite like the
[48:05] Speaker 1: World Cup where they are going to have a range
[48:09] Speaker 1: throat throughout the country, but they are going to space
[48:11] Speaker 1: it out right.
[48:13] Speaker 2: So yeah, and just the way.
[48:18] Speaker 3: America or North America rose to the just embrace the
[48:22] Speaker 3: World Cup, which is not necessarily the top three sport here,
[48:28] Speaker 3: you know. Yeah, but yeah, it's going to be great.
[48:32] Speaker 3: I can't wait.
[48:33] Speaker 1: Yeah, looking forward to it. Yeah, it is a challenge though.
[48:36] Speaker 1: Interesting stuff. Okay, So one more family moment that cannot
[48:41] Speaker 1: be ignored. Lebron played with his son.
[48:46] Speaker 3: Also on the court, but will allow it.
[48:48] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's allowed.
[48:52] Speaker 1: At the same time, he didn't play with him Aton,
[48:55] Speaker 1: so you could say this is more just about him
[48:58] Speaker 1: being out there together. But at the same time they
[49:00] Speaker 1: did play, they did chant Bronnie, Bronnie. Whenever La went
[49:04] Speaker 1: to go play in Cleveland. He ended up passing an
[49:09] Speaker 1: alley oop to Bronnie in the playoffs in twenty six. Here,
[49:13] Speaker 1: it's two full seasons and started twenty four and Bronnie
[49:17] Speaker 1: was able to finish that alley oop, which he could
[49:20] Speaker 1: have missed because it was an up and under sort
[49:23] Speaker 1: of finish. It wasn't a dunk. It was a finish
[49:25] Speaker 1: on the other side that he was able to finish
[49:28] Speaker 1: with his off handsles and a sweet, sweet moment for
[49:31] Speaker 1: those two simple as that, two seasons of Bronni playing
[49:35] Speaker 1: with Bronnie le Bron playing with his son.
[49:38] Speaker 3: Yeah, it's beautiful.
[49:40] Speaker 2: It is.
[49:40] Speaker 3: I Jack my son joined our pickleball team. Yeah, and
[49:46] Speaker 3: so I had the opportunity to play with my son
[49:49] Speaker 3: in an actual competitive game. We got our asses handed
[49:53] Speaker 3: to us, but it was still fun. It was great.
[49:56] Speaker 3: It's playing with your son on a you know, he's eighteen,
[50:03] Speaker 3: so you know, he's basically an adult. And the two
[50:06] Speaker 3: of us together being able to play a quote unquote
[50:10] Speaker 3: sport together. It's not Lebron and Brownie, but I got
[50:14] Speaker 3: a little taste of it, and it's was pretty sweet.
[50:17] Speaker 2: Well, you can't. It's a sport.
[50:19] Speaker 3: Yeah, sure, it's a shoard, it's a sport.
[50:23] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[50:24] Speaker 1: So is this the same scenario where dad is the
[50:29] Speaker 1: prominent player, the best player.
[50:30] Speaker 3: Absolutely, he's actually better than me, and I had no
[50:36] Speaker 3: influence on drafting him the way Lebron had Lakers.
[50:41] Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
[50:42] Speaker 1: The twentieth most iconic off court moment for Lebron James
[50:50] Speaker 1: was the will he retire farewell tour that were in
[50:56] Speaker 1: And this is just to wrap it all up. How's
[50:58] Speaker 1: it going to end? What is going to happen these
[51:01] Speaker 1: next couple of years, and will there be a farewell
[51:05] Speaker 1: tour in that final year? Will he come out and
[51:07] Speaker 1: say at the beginning of the season.
[51:09] Speaker 3: This is it?
[51:10] Speaker 2: That's a great, really good.
[51:14] Speaker 1: It's a good debate because everyone thinks, oh, Lebron loves
[51:18] Speaker 1: the ceremony and all that, that whole aspect. But I
[51:22] Speaker 1: wonder if he will. I sure do think you know
[51:24] Speaker 1: as we sit here on Monday, July twentieth, that it's
[51:27] Speaker 1: going to be more than one season that he plays.
[51:31] Speaker 1: He ain't done after the next season. I don't think,
[51:34] Speaker 1: you know, physically, if he can't, then he'll decide it'll
[51:36] Speaker 1: be over. But it feels like he's going Tom Brady's
[51:39] Speaker 1: style and going till whenever he can. So that's that's
[51:45] Speaker 1: how just me wrapping it up, wondering where do we
[51:47] Speaker 1: go from here?
[51:49] Speaker 2: As simple as that.
[51:51] Speaker 3: I mean, he is very good at milking and potentially
[51:56] Speaker 3: monetizing uncertainty, you know what I mean, no other player
[52:00] Speaker 3: in our career doing a show about basketball has affected
[52:07] Speaker 3: us in terms of, oh, Lebron did something, drop everything,
[52:11] Speaker 3: let's go. Like when he went back to Cleveland, we
[52:14] Speaker 3: had to abandon a succulent buffet in Las Vegas, And
[52:19] Speaker 3: right now we are on call. Basically, if he decides
[52:24] Speaker 3: he's going to sign somewhere, well he is going to decide.
[52:27] Speaker 3: But when that happens, we will be dropping everything and
[52:32] Speaker 3: doing an emergency podcast. And of course, you know, you
[52:36] Speaker 3: just did one for lou Dort. But Lebron is special,
[52:41] Speaker 3: you know, and even in his twilight years, he will
[52:46] Speaker 3: dictate our lives until he's out of the league, which
[52:51] Speaker 3: is great, but also he knows what he's doing from
[52:56] Speaker 3: the decision to the final this final decision that he's
[53:01] Speaker 3: going to make, and it's not even going to be
[53:03] Speaker 3: his final decision, but he will. He will not announce
[53:07] Speaker 3: his retirement until he's until he's not getting meaningful minutes
[53:13] Speaker 3: off of even off of the bench, do you know
[53:14] Speaker 3: what I mean?
[53:15] Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, you're right.
[53:16] Speaker 1: Every moment that he decides to do something, we have
[53:19] Speaker 1: to talk about exactly. And Wednesday, Tray will be back
[53:24] Speaker 1: from his vacations, so we've got the challenge of coming
[53:28] Speaker 1: up with something else, which we will. We'll do something
[53:30] Speaker 1: else because it's you know, it's difficult to just talk
[53:33] Speaker 1: about Lebron and where he's going, and I know other
[53:36] Speaker 1: networks do that. Is it Cleveland, isn't Miami. We can
[53:40] Speaker 1: talk about that until we're blue in the face. So
[53:42] Speaker 1: that's why I decided to come up with something a
[53:44] Speaker 1: little different, and we will do that on Wednesday when
[53:46] Speaker 1: Trey comes back. I do want to ask one question,
[53:50] Speaker 1: because I have forgotten about that succulent buffet that we
[53:54] Speaker 1: had in twenty fourteen.
[53:55] Speaker 2: What was what? Where were we? What were what were
[53:59] Speaker 2: you eating? That was so.
[54:00] Speaker 3: Honestly, I can't remember. In fact, I hate a buffet
[54:04] Speaker 3: and it was what was that place called the something Fork?
[54:07] Speaker 3: It was in the Cosmo. I don't remember what it
[54:11] Speaker 3: was called. It was expensive. I mean, the food was fine,
[54:14] Speaker 3: but I'm not a buffet. But it's fun to say succulent.
[54:18] Speaker 1: So I just said, all right, I've got I'm trying
[54:25] Speaker 1: to think of a succulent segue here, but I don't
[54:28] Speaker 1: have one. I'll just say that we did have a
[54:30] Speaker 1: podcast where we pitched our movie series. Yes, that we're
[54:35] Speaker 1: covering the summer. Well, in fact, we're debating which movie
[54:38] Speaker 1: series we will be covering, whether it's Indiana Jones, The
[54:41] Speaker 1: Pirates of the Caribbean, Superman and Transforms. We had that
[54:45] Speaker 1: debate and now that there still is a poll up
[54:47] Speaker 1: at our substack page. The link is in the show
[54:51] Speaker 1: notes to help us decide which one should we do.
[54:54] Speaker 1: There's a couple of days left.
[54:57] Speaker 3: What's leading? I forget Pirates.
[54:59] Speaker 1: Are the care at last check took over from Indiana Jones.
[55:03] Speaker 1: That was leading for a while. I get I think
[55:08] Speaker 1: the thing that the Pirates of the Caribbean has going
[55:12] Speaker 1: for it. It's more recent than the Indiana Jones series,
[55:17] Speaker 1: the beginning of it.
[55:18] Speaker 3: You know it's older, but I said, ain't as old
[55:21] Speaker 3: as Indiana Jones.
[55:22] Speaker 1: I'm just guessing why people have picked Pirates of the Caribbean.
[55:27] Speaker 3: I think it's Pirates.
[55:28] Speaker 2: Pirates are people love.
[55:30] Speaker 1: Hey, That's why I picked to pitch it because it
[55:33] Speaker 1: was fun every moment I watched of it, even though
[55:35] Speaker 1: I hadn't watched a ton of it. But I am
[55:37] Speaker 1: looking forward to if The Pirates of the Caribbean wins,
[55:39] Speaker 1: looking forward to covering the the trilogy part which blend altogether.
[55:44] Speaker 1: It's it's a great plot and then the downhill of
[55:49] Speaker 1: four and five. So that makes it fun for people
[55:52] Speaker 1: to listen to the good and the bad.
[55:54] Speaker 3: You know, it's not fun to watch them, but well
[55:57] Speaker 3: I guess it's fun to all that. I only seen
[56:00] Speaker 3: the I think I've seen the first two, which I liked.
[56:03] Speaker 3: I think, yeah, I.
[56:04] Speaker 2: Think you did. I don't know, but I think you did.
[56:09] Speaker 1: All right, we will be back Wednesday, but for now,
[56:13] Speaker 1: Clipper bros.
[56:14] Speaker 3: You heard it here first. Have a great time, turn up.
[56:17] Speaker 3: Love you guys awesome.
[56:19] Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us, and remember lebron has had a
[56:22] Speaker 1: lot of nicknames, but some were left on the cutting
[56:24] Speaker 1: room floor. Libro the Hero Lebronathan and the sixth day
[56:31] Speaker 1: of Christmas.
[56:34] Speaker 2: It's birthday.
[56:35] Speaker 3: Interesting Yeah, well I just made that up.
[56:38] Speaker 2: Never never as stuck. Anyway, We'll see you on Wednesday.
