[0:02] Speaker 1: a brand new podcast that I think you'll really enjoy
[0:05] Speaker 1: called Killer Communications from ab Jack Entertainment. It's hosted by
[0:10] Speaker 1: the amazing Mike Morpford. In each episode, Mike walks you
[0:13] Speaker 1: through tri crime cases that involves some element of communication
[0:17] Speaker 1: from the potential perp. Whether it's a taunting email sent
[0:20] Speaker 1: to police, a mysterious text to a victim or their family,
[0:24] Speaker 1: or a threatening letter in the mailbox of a newspaper.
[0:27] Speaker 1: Mike unraps these cases and how these sinister communications played
[0:31] Speaker 1: a role in the case. You probably think that the
[0:34] Speaker 1: bad guys in these cases want to keep their distance
[0:36] Speaker 1: and not provide any extra clues that may lead to
[0:39] Speaker 1: them being identified, but you'd be surprised at just how
[0:43] Speaker 1: often it happens. I'm about to play you a preview
[0:47] Speaker 1: of episode one of Killer Communications, the case of Deal Williams,
[0:51] Speaker 1: who vanished from Nuclear Colorado in ninety ninety nine after
[0:54] Speaker 1: receiving a mysterious phone call. For decades, his case went
[0:58] Speaker 1: unsolved before rast was finally made recently. After listening, go
[1:03] Speaker 1: over and listen to the complete Deal Williams episode to
[1:06] Speaker 1: see how the key is kicked off and how it
[1:08] Speaker 1: was solved. It's available Noise everywhere you listen to podcasts.

[1:22] Speaker 2: Chapter two Where did Dal Go? The caller of Dale's
[1:26] Speaker 2: shop had indicated they had broken down in the town
[1:29] Speaker 2: of Bedrock, about twenty six miles from Nukla. On his
[1:32] Speaker 2: way to Bedrock, Dale stopped at a gas station owned
[1:35] Speaker 2: by his neighbor and good friend, Tammy Lawrence, where he
[1:38] Speaker 2: gassed up and let her know that he was on
[1:39] Speaker 2: his way to help a stranded person and that he
[1:41] Speaker 2: wouldn't be able to fix her car's windshield. In hindsight,
[1:45] Speaker 2: Tammy felt this was odd and Dal would normally just
[1:47] Speaker 2: call her on the phone about something so small. Tammy
[1:51] Speaker 2: got the feeling Dal was uneasy about something and maybe
[1:53] Speaker 2: he wanted her husband to go along with him, but
[1:56] Speaker 2: he wasn't home, So Dale left Tammy's gas station and
[1:59] Speaker 2: was never seen again. Chapter three Missing Persons Report. By
[2:07] Speaker 2: nine pm on the night of the twenty seventh, Dale
[2:09] Speaker 2: hadn't returned home well. His wife, Diana wasn't really worried
[2:12] Speaker 2: at this point, because it was normal for Dale to
[2:14] Speaker 2: be working late on projects. She did find it a
[2:17] Speaker 2: little strange that he wasn't answering the shop's phone just
[2:20] Speaker 2: a reminder. This was nineteen ninety nine, and according to
[2:23] Speaker 2: Dale's daughter Tony, her family only had one cell phone
[2:26] Speaker 2: they used if they were traveling, so Dal didn't have
[2:29] Speaker 2: a cell phone with him. Diana figured Dale was just
[2:33] Speaker 2: busy with his work, and although she was a little
[2:35] Speaker 2: uneasy as she went to sleep that night, she felt
[2:37] Speaker 2: confident that in the morning she'd wake up with Dal
[2:40] Speaker 2: next to her. But the next morning, when Dal wasn't there,
[2:43] Speaker 2: Diana couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong, very wrong.
[2:47] Speaker 2: She called Dal's mother, who lived a few blocks away,
[2:50] Speaker 2: and the two women went over to the shop to
[2:51] Speaker 2: see if Dal had fallen asleep at work. But what
[2:54] Speaker 2: they found there raised all of the alarm bells. The
[2:57] Speaker 2: shop doors were wide open, the hood of a car
[3:00] Speaker 2: Dale had been working on was still propped upright, and
[3:02] Speaker 2: his tools were scattered around like he had left them
[3:04] Speaker 2: in the middle of this project. The scene looked like
[3:08] Speaker 2: he had literally just walked away for a few minutes
[3:10] Speaker 2: with intentions to return. The only thing missing was a
[3:13] Speaker 2: shop truck and Dall's toolbox. Both women thought maybe Dal
[3:18] Speaker 2: had gotten so into a project that he'd gone to
[3:20] Speaker 2: one of the local junkyards to pick up some parts,
[3:22] Speaker 2: but when they visited the junkyards a Dale frequented, no
[3:25] Speaker 2: one had seen him. Beginning to panic and at a
[3:28] Speaker 2: loss for what they do next, Diana called the local
[3:31] Speaker 2: police to file missing persons report. Oh fallon Police Department.
[3:34] Speaker 2: Is this an emergency? Chapter four? The search begins. Police
[3:41] Speaker 2: called in the Colorado Bureau of Investigations or CBI and
[3:44] Speaker 2: the Montrose County Sheriff's Department to help investigate. The Williams
[3:48] Speaker 2: family also organized citizen searches of the area to see
[3:51] Speaker 2: if they could find Dal. According to Dall's brother Dick,
[3:54] Speaker 2: over one hundred people came out to help search in
[3:57] Speaker 2: those first few days, but aside from finding some tools
[4:00] Speaker 2: on the side of the highway near the town of Bedrock,
[4:03] Speaker 2: search has turned up nothing. Police had a few eyewitness
[4:06] Speaker 2: accounts that stated they'd seen Dale's truck on the side
[4:09] Speaker 2: of the highway with another vehicle on the afternoon of
[4:12] Speaker 2: May twenty seventh, but no one could identify the driver
[4:15] Speaker 2: of the other car. There were no surveillance cameras in
[4:18] Speaker 2: the Bedrock area, and though police were able to determine
[4:21] Speaker 2: that the caller had contacted Dale's shop from a stolen
[4:24] Speaker 2: cell phone, they were unable to trace it to a
[4:26] Speaker 2: legitimate person. Dal's daughter Tony, has strong beliefs that the
[4:31] Speaker 2: caller couldn't have been in Bedrock when they made the call,
[4:33] Speaker 2: as the town sits in a deep valley between large
[4:36] Speaker 2: mountain ranges, and even today, cell phone reception there is
[4:39] Speaker 2: incredibly spotty. In nineteen ninety nine, it would have been
[4:43] Speaker 2: near impossible to have made a cell phone call from
[4:45] Speaker 2: that area. With very little evidence to go on, police
[4:49] Speaker 2: speculated that perhaps Dale had interrupted some criminal activity like
[4:53] Speaker 2: a drug exchange and become the victim of a larger crime,
[4:56] Speaker 2: or perhaps someone had a nefarious purpose for the phone call.
[5:00] Speaker 2: But why would anyone want to loure Dale Williams to
[5:03] Speaker 2: a secluded location with the intention of harming him. By
[5:06] Speaker 2: all accounts, he was a respected and deeply admired member
[5:09] Speaker 2: of the community. But there was one person who didn't
[5:12] Speaker 2: admire Dale. A man who remains unnamed for reasons of
[5:16] Speaker 2: privacy and was a friend of Dale's, turned out to
[5:19] Speaker 2: be extremely abusive towards his wife and son. Dall and
[5:22] Speaker 2: Diana had been friends with his family, but when the
[5:24] Speaker 2: wife told them she was trying to get a divorce
[5:26] Speaker 2: and afraid for her safety, Dall and Diana helped her
[5:29] Speaker 2: and her son escape to a safe location while the
[5:31] Speaker 2: husband was out of town. The husband was extremely angry
[5:35] Speaker 2: when he came home to find his wife and son gone,
[5:37] Speaker 2: and he knew that only Dale and Diana could have
[5:39] Speaker 2: done something since no one else knew about this abuse.
[5:42] Speaker 2: But when he confronted down Diana, they claimed they didn't
[5:44] Speaker 2: know anything about where the man's family might have gone.
[5:50] Speaker 2: Chapter five break Ins, Vandalism, and a possible suspect. About
[5:57] Speaker 2: a year after they had helped their ex friend's wife
[5:59] Speaker 2: and son escape, Dale came to a shop one morning
[6:02] Speaker 2: to find it had been broken into. His twenty two
[6:04] Speaker 2: caliber handgun was missing, and the bullets had been scattered
[6:07] Speaker 2: all over the garage. There were also several photos of Dale, Diana,
[6:12] Speaker 2: and this strange couple from their happier times together that
[6:15] Speaker 2: had been ripped up and left by the garage door.
[6:18] Speaker 2: Then a few months after this break in, Diana found
[6:20] Speaker 2: Dale's missing gun and the movie returned dropbox at their
[6:23] Speaker 2: video store. Well, it was never proven that Dale's ex
[6:26] Speaker 2: friend was the vandal or the thief of his gun.
[6:29] Speaker 2: Dale's family always felt that it was him. As far
[6:32] Speaker 2: as Dale's daughter Tony knows, her father never called the
[6:35] Speaker 2: police about these issues or brought charges against his ex friend.
[6:39] Speaker 2: Her feelings are that her dad wasn't the kind of
[6:41] Speaker 2: person who called the police on his friends, and may
[6:43] Speaker 2: not have felt the issue was serious enough to warrant
[6:45] Speaker 2: calling them without definitive proof. What is very interesting is
[6:50] Speaker 2: that during the community search for Dale, the police department
[6:53] Speaker 2: provided hundreds of missing persons posters with Dale's information and
[6:57] Speaker 2: photo on them that we would be hung around the
[6:58] Speaker 2: surrounding areas. One of these places was at the Nuclear
[7:02] Speaker 2: post Office, and Diana noticed that the poster she hung
[7:05] Speaker 2: in the post office waiting room had been ripped from
[7:07] Speaker 2: the board and thrown away. She replaced the poster and
[7:11] Speaker 2: came the next day, only to find that that poster
[7:13] Speaker 2: too had been ripped down. This went on for several days,
[7:17] Speaker 2: and Diana felt that it was no mistake someone was
[7:19] Speaker 2: deliberately removing Dal's flyers from this prominent location. Diana was proactive.
[7:25] Speaker 2: She asked the post office if they could install a
[7:27] Speaker 2: camera in the waiting room to see if they could
[7:29] Speaker 2: catch the perpetrator, and they agreed to do that. Within
[7:32] Speaker 2: just a few days, Footage from this camera captured Dal's
[7:35] Speaker 2: ex friend clearly ripping the flyer down and crumpling it
[7:38] Speaker 2: up for tossing it in the garbage can. Why would
[7:42] Speaker 2: he do this? Did he not want Dal to be found?
[7:45] Speaker 2: Or was he just an angry man who hadn't let
[7:47] Speaker 2: go of his grudge against his ex friend. Diana took
[7:51] Speaker 2: this information to the police and they did question this
[7:54] Speaker 2: man about Dell's disappearance. He did seem to be a
[7:57] Speaker 2: viable person of interest. Unfortunate, he had a solid alibi
[8:01] Speaker 2: in another location on the day Dale disappeared, and he
[8:04] Speaker 2: also agreed to take two polygraph tests which he passed
[8:07] Speaker 2: and he was quickly ruled out as a suspect. Chapter
[8:12] Speaker 2: six Dale's truck has found. Investigators trying to solve Dale's
[8:19] Speaker 2: case didn't have much until the weekend of July fourth,
[8:21] Speaker 2: nineteen ninety nine. Just outside of Nukle, at a swimming
[8:25] Speaker 2: hole down a dirt road, a local teenager named Levi
[8:28] Speaker 2: was fishing with his brother. Levi's lawre got hung up
[8:32] Speaker 2: on something out in the water, and he decided to
[8:34] Speaker 2: swim out to retrieve it. The laure was caught on
[8:37] Speaker 2: the window of a submerged truck. As Levi swam around
[8:41] Speaker 2: the vehicle, he wondered if it could belong to Dal Williams,
[8:43] Speaker 2: and he was able to pool the dash cover off
[8:45] Speaker 2: the truck's upper windshield and bring it to the surface
[8:48] Speaker 2: for a better investigation. And sure enough, when he read
[8:51] Speaker 2: the words William's autobody garage, he knew the truck was Dale's.
[8:56] Speaker 2: Levi immediately contacted the police in the Williams family and
[9:00] Speaker 2: a team was sent to the swimming hole to investigate
[9:02] Speaker 2: this first piece of evidence. The truck was in ten
[9:06] Speaker 2: feet of water and stuck in about three feet of
[9:08] Speaker 2: soft silk, so it required a huge backhoe to remove
[9:11] Speaker 2: it from the water. This did quite a bit of
[9:16] Speaker 2: damage to the vehicle, and Tony would later say that
[9:19] Speaker 2: because the windows of the truck were open, some items
[9:22] Speaker 2: from the truck's interior escaped downstream, and investigators never bothered
[9:26] Speaker 2: to retrieve those things. Whether or not this would have
[9:29] Speaker 2: been useful evidence will never be known. Dal's body was
[9:32] Speaker 2: not in the truck. So he remained missing. At first,
[9:37] Speaker 2: police wondered if perhaps Dal had gone off the road
[9:39] Speaker 2: and into the water as a result of an accident,
[9:42] Speaker 2: but when they searched the area, it became clear that
[9:44] Speaker 2: it was no accident, that the truck was placed into
[9:46] Speaker 2: that body of water on purpose. Police were able to
[9:50] Speaker 2: determine that the truck had been running when it went
[9:52] Speaker 2: into the water, and that it had gone in at a
[9:54] Speaker 2: very low rate of speed. It was believed that the
[9:57] Speaker 2: truck was literally walked into the lake by someone walking
[10:00] Speaker 2: beside it and steering it into the water via the
[10:02] Speaker 2: open window. In later interviews, Tony would explain that the
[10:07] Speaker 2: swimming hole was not well known to anyone outside of
[10:09] Speaker 2: the local community, and it wasn't visible from the road,
[10:13] Speaker 2: so if someone had stolen her father's truck, they would
[10:15] Speaker 2: have had to know the area to know that the
[10:17] Speaker 2: swimming hole was there. One thing notably missing from the
[10:21] Speaker 2: truck was a large toolbox Dale had in the back bed.
[10:24] Speaker 2: It had been removed, and due to the water, it
[10:27] Speaker 2: made taking fingerprints or doing other preliminary forensics extremely difficult.
[10:32] Speaker 2: The investigation once again stalled
