## Transcript

[0:00] Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, this is Emily, the host of Morbidology. I'm
[0:03] Speaker 1: recommending a podcast that truly captivated me. It's called kill List.
[0:08] Speaker 1: One night, a hacker breaks into a dark web murder
[0:11] Speaker 1: for high sight, uncovering a chilling catch of documents called
[0:14] Speaker 1: the kill List. It details hundreds of names around the globe,
[0:19] Speaker 1: complete with faces, addresses, as well as peymans and instructions
[0:23] Speaker 1: for their murders. When a murder disguised as a suicide
[0:27] Speaker 1: shakes a quiet suburb, a hacker connects the victim to
[0:30] Speaker 1: the kill list. With local police slow to act, he
[0:34] Speaker 1: turns to an unsuspecting investigative journalist to help. His name
[0:39] Speaker 1: is Carl Miller. When law enforcement decides not to investigate,
[0:44] Speaker 1: our team is forced to take matters into our own hands,
[0:48] Speaker 1: a decision that plunders us into a high stakes race
[0:51] Speaker 1: to warn those whose lives are in danger, and, as
[0:54] Speaker 1: it turns out, convincing a total stranger someone wants them dead.
[0:59] Speaker 1: Isn't that a I'm about to play a clip from
[1:02] Speaker 1: kill List. Follow kill List on the Wandery app or
[1:06] Speaker 1: wherever you get your podcasts.
[1:13] Speaker 2: All right, you ready?
[1:14] Speaker 3: Yep?
[1:15] Speaker 4: It's a Thursday afternoon and I'm going to call with
[1:18] Speaker 4: one of my producers. The road outside my house is
[1:22] Speaker 4: almost totally silent. On my computer, I open Chris's document.
[1:27] Speaker 2: Oh wow, there's a lot on here.
[1:28] Speaker 4: Yeah, Chris is run me through the orders. But this
[1:32] Speaker 4: is the first time I've got my hands on the
[1:35] Speaker 4: kill list itself. It's a long spreadsheet of names, locations,
[1:41] Speaker 4: telephone numbers.
[1:42] Speaker 3: So how many do we have? It looks like there's
[1:44] Speaker 3: eighty five eighty five.
[1:47] Speaker 4: I scroll through the list, A man from the US,
[1:50] Speaker 4: a woman from Russia. Alongside each name there are contact details,
[1:55] Speaker 4: workplace addresses, details of their movements, and in most cases,
[2:00] Speaker 4: there are photos.
[2:03] Speaker 3: The photos are the thing that strike me first.
[2:05] Speaker 4: A few dozen people staring out at you as you
[2:08] Speaker 4: open this document. In one, a middle aged man stands
[2:12] Speaker 4: surrounded by his family. His light blue eyes twinkle with
[2:16] Speaker 4: a deep and joyful pride. In another, a woman tilts
[2:19] Speaker 4: her head. She smiles shyly at the camera over Wimles's glasses.
[2:23] Speaker 4: She's somewhere glitsy. She looks relaxed and happy. The thing
[2:27] Speaker 4: that's so striking about these photos is that they look
[2:29] Speaker 4: like they've all been taken from the social media. They
[2:31] Speaker 4: look like kind of mainly Facebook profile. So they're the
[2:34] Speaker 4: ones that you decide to put on your profile picture.
[2:37] Speaker 3: Yeah, they're nice photos. Yeah, and it's I mean, it's
[2:42] Speaker 3: just a photo.
[2:42] Speaker 2: But they all just sort of have this on, you know.
[2:45] Speaker 2: They just don't know and this is just sort of
[2:48] Speaker 2: looming over their head and they have no idea. You know, man,
[2:52] Speaker 2: this is awful.
[2:54] Speaker 4: This list looks like any other Excel spreadsheets. It's innocuous,
[2:58] Speaker 4: boring even you read the instructions listed against each name.
[3:04] Speaker 4: There's one fucking guy and I only have his name
[3:06] Speaker 4: and the city he lives in.
[3:08] Speaker 1: How can I hire a killer to kill him?
[3:10] Speaker 3: How much Bitcoin should I pay? Tell me the execution
[3:13] Speaker 3: time and advance.
[3:15] Speaker 4: I can't be there. I would just like this person
[3:17] Speaker 4: to be shot and killed where, how, and what with?
[3:21] Speaker 3: Does not bother me at all. I would just like
[3:24] Speaker 3: this person dead.
[3:25] Speaker 4: These are the messages written by whoever paid to have
[3:29] Speaker 4: these people assassinated.
[3:31] Speaker 3: Their specifications for the hit.
[3:34] Speaker 4: Can you kidnap, silent and erase without a trace, killing
[3:37] Speaker 4: us in Taipei?
[3:38] Speaker 2: I guess we don't know the backstory, but like a nurse,
[3:41] Speaker 2: I want her to be killed.
[3:42] Speaker 3: They should seem she's dead because of accident, kidnapped family
[3:47] Speaker 3: in Hong Kong. Can we say fifteen bitcoin for hit
[3:49] Speaker 3: with the car insure fatality?
[3:51] Speaker 2: Mother needs to die. Someone wants to kill their man.
[3:54] Speaker 3: Kill an unidentified woman in Ottawa, kill.
[3:56] Speaker 2: A woman who permitted sexual abuse woman. Jesus, man, this
[4:02] Speaker 2: is terrible, just.
[4:03] Speaker 4: Like these are really possibly eighty five really serious crimes
[4:07] Speaker 4: just staring back at us.
[4:08] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean this is conspiracy to commit murder ethically.
[4:16] Speaker 4: This is the hardest thing to cover that I've ever
[4:20] Speaker 4: tried to do. And for sure, I mean, this is
[4:23] Speaker 4: an ethical bomb, way to blow up in our faces
[4:25] Speaker 4: if we don't do this correctly.
[4:27] Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know, man, it looks like a big
[4:29] Speaker 2: Pandora's box that were opening, and once you open it,
[4:33] Speaker 2: it's opening.
[4:33] Speaker 3: I don't think we can put it shirt.
[4:36] Speaker 4: The thought of what could go wrong if I meddle
[4:38] Speaker 4: with this is terrifying, But so is the thought of
[4:42] Speaker 4: what could happen if I do nothing.
[4:50] Speaker 3: So I start with the obvious step.
[4:53] Speaker 4: I'm quite nervous, honestly, like I wasn't able to sleep
[4:55] Speaker 4: that well.
[4:56] Speaker 3: I don't know why.
[4:57] Speaker 4: Suddenly makes it a lot more real when it's just
[5:00] Speaker 4: a spreadsheet at the moment, and it's about to turn
[5:02] Speaker 4: into a crime. I'm about to phone the police and
[5:06] Speaker 4: hand over my information. Chris might have struggled with law enforcements,
[5:11] Speaker 4: but I've worked with the police before in my reporting.
[5:14] Speaker 4: I'm confident I can do better. After all, this is
[5:18] Speaker 4: incredible threats. How hard can it be to get them
[5:22] Speaker 4: to take it seriously? All right?
[5:24] Speaker 3: Should I just do it? Then?
