## Transcript

[0:34] Her family are extremely concerned and say Katie's disappearances out of character for her.
[0:39] Katie is described as a white female thirty three years of age, five feet
[0:45] ten inches tall. She has shoulder length strawberry blonde ginger hair, and she
[0:52] was last seen wearing a blue cardigan, light blue and white song black leggings.
[1:06] Burnley is a market town located in Lancashire, England, with a rich
[1:10] industrial heritage. Its origins date back to prehistoric times, evidenced by archaeological finds
[1:17] in the area. It's believed to have been settled by Anglo Saxons, and
[1:21] its name likely derives from Brumley, meaning meadow by the River Brunn. In
[1:26] medieval times, Burnley was a small farming community that developed significantly during the Industrial
[1:32] Revolution. It became one of the world's largest producers of cotton cloth and grew
[1:38] rapidly during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The early twenty eighth century saw
[1:42] Burnley as a thriving industrial hub, but the decline of the textile industry bought
[1:48] along economic challenges. Despite these challenges, however, Burnley worked to reinvent itself
[1:56] and today it has a reputation as a regional center of excellence for the manufacturing
[2:00] and aerospace industries. Burnley was home to a man named Andrew Burnfield. It
[2:07] was at home on the morning of the twenty second of April two thousand and
[2:10] twenty two he received a text message from his on and off again girl friend,
[2:16] Katy Kenyon. The couple had been dating for about three years, and
[2:21] they both had children from previous relationships, but the relationship had always been rocky,
[2:25] with periods where they were together and then periods where they were separated.
[2:30] But things were looking promising for their relationship to be rekindled, and Katy texted
[2:37] Andrew that morning that she was excited for a new chapter. But by twelve
[2:42] eighteen p m. Katy appeared to be in a much different mood. She
[2:46] texted her twelve year old daughter, Hey, I love you and I'm sorry
[2:52] Ring your dad. He will be looking after you for a while from to
[2:54] day. I need to get help so I can be a better person for
[2:58] you and your brother. Please know I love you and I'm not upset with
[3:01] you, so I couldn't tell you about it. If your dad won't look
[3:06] after you, remember Andy will always have your back. Remember to Ring your
[3:10] dad or Andy. Katy's fourteen year old son also received a text message from
[3:16] her which read, Hey, dude, I love you and I'm sorry.
[3:21] You need to ring your dad. He'll be looking after you from to day.
[3:24] I need to get help. It's not you. I love you.
[3:29] Will you look after your sister and know Andy will always have your back.
[3:32] Get your dad to come and get you while I'm gone. If he won't
[3:37] look after you, get him to take you to Andy. Katy's mother then
[3:42] received a text message which read, this is the bravest thing I've ever had
[3:46] to do. I need to find some peace and sort my mind out.
[3:50] So with the six grand Andy gave me to pay the debt off, I'm
[3:53] being free for a while until I figure all this shit out. Finally,
[3:59] at one forty two pm, Katy texted Andrew Burfield, I want you to
[4:04] know I'm truly sorry for everything. After the strange text messages from Kate,
[4:24] Andrew tried to call her back, but her phone was switched off. He
[4:28] left her a voicemail hips listen to the start your message will as me.
[4:32] I'm I'll be worried. Just bring me not have to do this. I'm
[4:36] not worried about the money. I don't worried about the money. Just bring
[4:40] me please, hope you. When Katy didn't respond, Andrew reached out to
[4:44] her son on Instagram, relaying a message that Katie had asked him to look
[4:48] after the dog while she was away. His message read, what's happened?
[4:54] Are you both okay? Do you want me to come down for you both?
[4:58] But as the hours passed with no word from Kayrie, Worrie began to
[5:01] set in. By five PM, her mother, Dawn, contacted Katy's sisters,
[5:06] Sarah and Jenny, telling them Katie's walked out on the kids. Despite
[5:13] the text messages from Kayrie, a nagging doubt persisted. Katy adored her children
[5:17] and she always put them first, and her family couldn't believe she would simply
[5:21] abandon them immediately, they reached out to Andrew Burfield, asking if he had
[5:28] seen or heard from Kayrie. Andrew mentioned the strange message he had received from
[5:31] her, describing it as completely unexpected. He said that he had been at
[5:36] work that day but knew that Katy had been to his home, where she
[5:41] dropped her car case through the letter box. He added that Katy had an
[5:46] appointment at rehab center that day to address our anxiety, and suggested that she
[5:50] was there. Apparently, Katie told Andrew to sell her car if he wanted
[5:56] to, because she owed him money. As the family they gathered, Katye's
[6:00] children shared the messages they had received from Andrew. Instantly, something caught the
[6:06] family's attention. Andrew's messages were written in the same style as those purportedly written
[6:14] from Kaye, down to the misspelling of the word while as W I l
[6:17] E. This eerie similarity raised suspicions, hinting that perhaps Andrew himself had sent
[6:25] the text messages from Carie's phone, but why. The family knew Katy and
[6:30] Andrew hadn't had the best relationship, and alarm bells were ringing in their heads.
[6:36] That night, Katye's sister Sarah and her boyfriend Anthony drove to Andrew's home
[6:42] in Burnley to confront him. As they arrived, they spotted Katrie's car parked
[6:46] outside. Although Katy wasn't in it, all of her belongings were. By
[6:53] now, those alarm bells were screeching. They banged on Andrew's door, but
[6:58] he refused to answer. Instead, he called the police. He said that
[7:03] his girlfriend's friend was there trying to kick the door in. He said to
[7:09] the operator, I don't know his name, but he's a friend of my
[7:12] girlfriend. He's come to collect some items for somebody. When detectives arrived at
[7:16] the home, Sarah and Anthony told them that Katie was missing, but her
[7:20] car was parked outside Andrew's home. Andrew allowed the detectives inside, these guys
[7:28] outside Katy. Do you know what she is? I've got today again to
[7:36] yours, I again from Katy. He showed them the messages he had received
[7:43] from Katie as well, reiterating that she had most likely gone to rehab.
[7:47] He then said that Katie had earlier told him she was going on a walk,
[7:51] showing a walk she told me she said to up the car this morning
[8:00] before that message being brought, so that part one just down on the wall
[8:11] you. The detectives asked Andrew where he thought Katie could be. If you're
[8:16] got LOCKI for gating out, where would you go? The first place you'd
[8:18] go pend a little so how would you get there? Would you walk?
[8:30] After dropping the keys off here for the car? You'd see and she walked
[8:33] a pendal from here from around two o'clock this afternoon. You have you reported
[8:41] any of this? No, because it's only just happened. It's a sister,
[8:45] you said, the message coming off too. Yeah, so the messages
[8:48] come for a quot to. You've replied pretty much straight away, And I'm
[8:52] just wondering. She said it's only just happened. But it's happened at like
[8:56] two o'clock this afternoon. Yeah, I've been the kids. I heard it
[9:01] at four. To be honestly, I thought it was just she'ed y.
[9:15] Is this out of character for it to just disappear like that? Right?
[9:18] So how can you thought if she would have been silly? But now you're
[9:22] concerned. The detectives then searched Andrew's home, but they found no sign of
[9:26] Katrie. Her disappearance was officially logged in this system. As everybody returned home
[9:33] that night, the nagging suspicion that Andrew knew more about Katie's disappearance wouldn't leave
[9:37] their minds. Determined to uncover the truth, Katty's sister Jenny texted him saying,
[9:43] Andy, I think you know a hell of a lot more than you're
[9:46] letting on. I have read over the messages Katie sent to her kids and
[9:50] she doesn't even spell like that or speak like that, which is what the
[9:54] kids have also said. Kitty knows how to spell and mentioned about you having
[9:58] to slexia, which makes sense to the spelling you sent them texts. You
[10:05] know where Katie is. The police will trace where she was from the last
[10:09] message sent. It doesn't add up how she would drop her car, her
[10:15] case, her bank card at yours, but no phone and none of her
[10:18] other bank cards. Since Katy's car was parked outside Andrew's home and todd Morton
[10:26] Road in Burnley, they seemed like the natural place for detectives to start their
[10:30] investigation. The next morning, detectives observed that there were surveillance cameras close to
[10:35] Andrew's home, so they obtained the footage from them. It showed Katy pulling
[10:41] up outside Andrew's home on the morning of the twenty second of April. She
[10:45] parked her car and then went into Andrew's home. At round nine thirty a
[10:50] m. She was seen coming back out. She was closely followed by Andrey
[10:56] Burfield. They walked on the garden path and climbed into andrews Ford transit van.
[11:05] Detective scar through further CCTV footage to try and figure out where the van
[11:09] had driven to. They established that Andrew and Cary had stopped at McDonald's and
[11:15] then traveled seventeen miles to the rural village of Bolton by Boland, a designated
[11:20] area of outstanding natural beauty. The transit van later reappeared on Todd Morten Road,
[11:28] but it was only Andrew in the vehicle. After the surveillance footage was
[11:33] discovered, Andrew Burfield was immediately arrested on suspicion of kidnapping. Despite the footage
[11:41] of them two together, Andrew still claimed he didn't know where Kayrie was.
[11:46] It's a very simple question, Andrew, can you tell me where kat is?
[11:52] You don't know? So it is there any clue you can give us?
[11:54] A lesson my day, I'll give you clearly on I think she's a
[12:01] real center clinic rap and would that be? I own no clue. Two
[12:09] days after Katie was last seen, detectives issued an urgent appeal for any witnesses
[12:15] to come forward. They asked the public to review their surveillance cameras, including
[12:20] dash cam footage, to see if they had captured any images of Katrie.
[12:24] She was described as being five feet nine inches tall with shoulder length blonde hair.
[12:31] She was wearing a blue cardigan, a light blue and white top,
[12:35] black leggings, and flip flops as she climbed into the Ford transit van.
[12:41] Detective Superintendent Gary Books held a press conference her family are extremely concerned and say
[12:46] Katie's disappearances out of character for her. Katie is described as a white female
[12:52] thirty three years of age, five feet ten inches tall. She has shoulder
[12:58] length strawberry blow ginger hair, and she was last seen wearing a blue cardigan,
[13:05] light blue and white sop, black leggings and Kitty's family were all proactive
[13:09] in the search for her, with her sister Sarah posting an update on Facebook
[13:13] which read, it's now a waiting game. We've done everything we can,
[13:18] searched everywhere, contacted everyone. She also appealed to people to not conduct their
[13:22] own searches for Katrie, saying that detectives didn't want anything to be tampered with.
[13:28] Kitty's family and friends all said that it was completely out of character for
[13:31] her to just stop and vanish. They all believed that something nefarious had happened,
[13:35] as Katrie would never have left her children behind. They firmly believed that
[13:41] Andrew Burfield knew more than he was letting on. After details of Katie's disappearance
[13:50] were made public, detectives received a phone call from a local man. He
[13:56] told them that he was sure he saw the van parked in the lay by
[14:00] on the outskirts of Gisbourne Forest at three fifteen pm the day that Kayrie disappeared.
[14:05] He said that he noticed the vehicle because it had unusual and prominent whale
[14:09] arches. Gisbourne Forest is the largest wooded area in the county, measuring more
[14:16] than twelve hundred hectares. Managed by Forestry England, the woodland is a popular
[14:20] destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The forest features a mix of tree species, primarily
[14:28] consisting of conifers such as sick capruce, Norway spruce and Douglas fir. These
[14:35] diverse tree species create a natural habitat for wildlife, including birds, steer and
[14:39] other woodland creatures. It's located in the Ribble Valley, some twenty three miles
[14:46] away from todd Morton Road, where Kayree was last seen getting into the silver
[14:50] van after receiving the tip teams of detectives descended on Gisburne Forest along with members
[14:58] of the Lancashire Fire and Red Service and their search dog unit and mountain rescue
[15:03] teams. They cordoned off areas of the forest to prevent members of the public
[15:09] from crossing into parts that were being searched. Police on horseback, Chris crossed
[15:13] the many footpaths that weave their way through the woods while sniffer dogs had their
[15:18] noses pressed to the ground searching for ascent. As the search for Katye intensified,
[15:24] detective secured a search warrant for her mobile phone, unlocking a digital trail
[15:30] of her last known movements. The datter revealed Kyrie journeying to Gisburne Forest and
[15:35] lingering there for just over forty two minutes. Curiously, her phone's location then
[15:41] indicated a return trip from the forest at eleven fifteen a m. However,
[15:46] this contradicted CCTV footage that showed Andrew driving home alone at the same time.
[15:52] Eager to uncover the dynamics between Katy and Andrew, Detective Stealth Deeper Katy's family
[16:00] described their relationship as turbulent, with tensions reaching a boiling point in May of
[16:06] two thousand and nineteen. That month, Katy received a court notice about a
[16:11] hefty claim for over four thousand pounds filed against her by Andrew. Katy was
[16:18] a single mother on Universal Credit and she didn't have that kind of money.
[16:23] She scrimped and saved just to get by and provide for her children. She
[16:27] sought a nonmolestation order, but it was never granted. Meanwhile, her mental
[16:33] health was in a tail spin, plagued by relentless anxiety. She was absolutely
[16:40] terrified of the bailiff showing up at her door. Katy made several attempts to
[16:45] agree a payment plan, but Andrew refused and wanted the payment up front.
[16:51] He even went as far as to email the debt collection agency, telling them
[16:56] the best times to catch Katy at her home and informing them he had assets
[17:00] of value. He listed her car and even a new bike she had purchased
[17:03] for her son. Katy became so overwhelmed that she began seeing a therapist,
[17:08] Scott Knowles, confiding in him about her lowest point. Despite her struggles,
[17:15] Katy expressed a flicker of hope regarding her relationship with Andrew, telling her therapist,
[17:22] I'm talking about my feelings with my partner, and we're doing really good.
[17:26] However, the fragile piece was shattered in February of two thousand and twenty
[17:30] two when Katy received an enforcement letter demanding she pay Andrew six thousand pounds instead
[17:37] of four But despite this ongoing turmoil, Katy and Andrew maintained contact. The
[17:44] relationship OSCO laid between hated arguments and moments of calm conversation, a tumultuous blend
[17:51] of conflict and connection. In March of twenty and twenty two, Andrew inquired
[17:56] about Katie's mental health and suggested she consider a stay in rehab. He recommended
[18:03] the Priory in Manchester, known for its outpatient care for various mental health conditions.
[18:11] He also promised to give Katy money to pay off the debt, claiming
[18:15] he didn't know how to stop the court proceedings. While the relationship seemed to
[18:18] be stabilizing on the surface, Katy was scripped by a deep seated fear.
[18:26] On the sixteenth of March, she had texted her mother, I'm paranoid to
[18:30] death. He's going to do something. I couldn't sleep all night. Katy's
[18:34] anxiety was Exacerbated by the financial strain that Andrew was placing on her, she
[18:40] confided in her mother that she would rather pay the six thousand points he demanded
[18:45] to avoid further conflict. Her frustration boiled over in a text to Andrew,
[18:49] where she wrote, have I put a six thousand pound dead over your head
[18:55] that I know you can't pay, just to make your life a little more
[18:57] harder and stressful. She then texted her mother he's literally another tindler swindler.
[19:04] He's done this before, lives off that money, then gives me money and
[19:08] gets it back off me. How the fock has he gotten away with it
[19:11] again? But by the following month things appeared to have simmered out again.
[19:18] Andrew had shown up at Katy's work and left chocolate and flowers on her windscreen,
[19:22] and then they went on a date to Brewer's Fair on the twelfth of
[19:26] April. Further text messages found on Katy's phone from the twentieth of April related
[19:32] to a house that the couple were supposed to be renting. This was just
[19:37] one day before Katy climbed into a van alongside Andrew and traveled out to Gisburne
[19:42] Forest where only Andrew returned home. During their continued investigation, detectives learned that
[19:55] Andrew had been dating another woman, Amanda Cox. They had a date planned
[20:00] for the evening that Katy vanished. However, at twelve thirty four p m.
[20:04] He had texted her and asked to rearrange the date as something had come
[20:08] up with the children. With the circumstantial evidence against Andrey mounting and with him
[20:15] still behind bars, detectives obtained a search warrant for his mobile phone and iCloud.
[20:21] They discovered that his iPhone had last been packed up on the fourth of
[20:23] April, when his cloud storage reached full capacity. After that, no new
[20:30] data was added to the cloud. But it was here that detectives made a
[20:33] chilling discovery. Saved in Andrew's iCloud notes up with a string of draft messages
[20:41] that were purported to be from Katrie. These messages were to her children,
[20:47] her mother, and even to Andrew himself, and they matched virtually verbat him
[20:52] to the messages they had received on the twenty second of April. It quickly
[20:57] became clear that the messages sent from Kyrie on that date were in fact written
[21:03] by Andrew. Detectives continued in their investigation with Andrew as the lead suspect.
[21:14] They believed that he had traveled with Carie up to Gisborne Forest where he had
[21:18] killed her, before returning home alone with her phone, which he then used
[21:22] to text her family. They needed to figure out what he had done with
[21:26] her body. True crime stories have a way of staying with you long after

[24:21] was fast. Detectives began retracing Andrew's movements from the moment he returned home without
[24:26] Krie. CCTV footage showed him putting items into bins at a property on Hillington
[24:33] Road where he was working on an extension. He was then captured on CCTV
[24:40] putting more items into the bins at the spar shop on todd Morton Road.
[24:45] Detectives immediately made their way to the bins and were relieved to find that they
[24:48] hadn't yet been emptied. When they were searched, they came across bloodstained clothing
[24:56] and Carie's flip flops. On the twenty seventh of April, Andrew Burfield was
[25:04] additionally charged with Katie's murder, despite the fact that no body had been found.
[25:11] He appeared in Blackburn Magistrate's Court and spoke only to confirm his name,
[25:15] date of birth and address. He was remanded into court as detectives said they
[25:21] were continuing to search for Katy in the Gisburn Forest area, although they said
[25:26] they were now looking for a body. Detectives told Andrew about the mounting evidence
[25:30] they had against him, from the CCTV footage, the mobile phone data,
[25:34] and the bloody items found in the bin. After Andrew was confronted with the
[25:40] evidence, he changed his story. While he had staunchly denied any involvement in
[25:45] Katy's disappearance, he finally broke down. He told the detectives that he and
[25:52] Katy had gone for a picnic that morning at Gisburne Forest. While here,
[25:57] he said, Katy bad him that he couldn't hit a can of cook she
[26:00] was holding with an axe he had in his car. He said that he
[26:04] was afraid he would chopp her arm off, so he aimed for the tree
[26:07] behind her, but said that it accidentally struck her in the head. Katy
[26:14] died instantly, he claimed. He said during the interrogation, I just sat
[26:19] there with her in my arms, covered in blood. Honest to God,
[26:23] it was like something from a film. Andrew told the detectives that he couldn't
[26:27] carry Katye's body to the car, so he decided to bury her in the
[26:32] forest. He said that he had a spade in the car and that he
[26:36] didn't want her body to be eaten by animals. According to Andrew, after
[26:41] he buried Kate, his plan was to go home so don't care for his
[26:45] children and Katrie's children, and then kill himself. However, that never happened.
[26:52] Detectives made it clear that they weren't buying Andrew's story. The thing is,
[26:56] Andrew, who told us a lot over the last few days, haven't
[26:59] you? You've told us a lot? Certainly today a lot of information,
[27:03] and a lot of it just does not add up, okay, And ultimately
[27:08] we don't believe you of what you've said. I do not believe that this
[27:14] has been an accident. This is about your control and over cater and you're
[27:21] losing the control. After making the confession, Andrew agreed to take detectives to
[27:25] the location where he had buried Katie's body in the forest. He climbed into
[27:30] the police fan alongside detectives and they silently drove out to Gisburn Forest. The
[27:37] air was thick with tension in the scent of damp earth after recent rain.
[27:42] Andrew was dressed in a full white protective suit and a blue face mask.
[27:48] They pulled into the same small clearing that Andrew and Caty had pulled into just
[27:52] a week earlier, the tall trees casting long shadows on the feeding afternoon light.
[27:59] Andrew was ordered either of the vehicle and he led detectives down a narrow
[28:03] trail deeper into the forest. The area was already sailed off with crime scene
[28:08] tape. And Andrew led detectives under the first set of tape and over to
[28:12] the other. He then stopped and collapsed to the ground. He swapped his
[28:19] arms from left to right, indicating where he had buried Krie. Detectives could
[28:26] see a mound of leaves and twigs. It was a grave so well concealed
[28:30] that a forensic archaeologist hadn't been able to find it. Andrew was a skilled
[28:36] builder and the grave was a complex one. Each layer of soil had been
[28:41] taken off in order, the top soil, then the next, and they
[28:45] were put back in the same order. Gisborne Forrest was cordined off as an
[28:49] examination of the same commenced. Katrie's body was found in the grave. After
[28:57] it was documented and photographed, she was transported for a home office post mortem
[29:02] examination. Detective Superintendent Gary Brooks how the press conference and announced following extensive police
[29:11] inquiries and after a number of days of searching, I can now sadly confirm
[29:15] that we have found a body and at this time we believe it to be
[29:18] that of Katy Kenyon. Katy's family have been told and my heart goes out
[29:23] to them at this time. We have specially trained officers supporting them at this
[29:29] difficult time. The post mortem was carried out that day and doctor Jamie Robinson
[29:34] found that Katy had died as the result of head injuries. While Andrew had
[29:41] claimed he had struck her accidentally with the axe, once her autopsy showed at
[29:47] least twelve separate strikes to her head. She had been struck with such force
[29:53] that there were multiple scalp defects and bones in her skull had been shattered,
[29:59] but there were no defensive wounds to Katrie. This suggested that she had been
[30:03] incapacitated immediately. She most likely got out of the car and was attacked from
[30:10] behind. She never stood a chance. The tributes for Katie came flooding in,
[30:22] with her sister Jenny posting on social media, we will love you forever
[30:26] and always, my beautiful big sister. She then added, I can't thank
[30:32] everybody enough with the support you have all shown for beautiful Katie and Katie's beautiful
[30:37] children. Katie's family set up a fund raising page to raise money for her
[30:41] funeral and for her two children, who were now left without a mother.
[30:47] The page read, in part, we as a family are putting together this
[30:51] just giving page for Kate to have the best end off that Katie deserves,
[30:55] and for Katie's son and daughter and their future to fulfill Katie's dreams planned with
[31:00] her children. It eventually raised almost thirty thousand pounds, and the community came
[31:06] together that weekend for a vigil in Katie's memory. They gathered at Memorial Park
[31:11] and lay down floors and candles. The skies were overcast and a somber Paul
[31:18] fell over the group of about fifty. Tanya Judge, who had been Katie's
[31:23] neighbor, commented in the media, it's a huge shock. We live on
[31:29] the same street and I knew her, but not as well as others,
[31:33] but she was a good neighbor. It's awful. I can't begin to imagine.
[31:37] My thoughts go out to her family, her friends, and her children.
[31:41] On the twentieth of May, hundreds of people came together for Katie's funeral
[31:45] at Saint Leonard's Church. Before her funeral, her family requested that everybody wear
[31:51] purple, which was her favorite color, or anything colorful. They also said
[31:56] that they wanted Katie to be surrounded by her favorite flow lilies and ascid if
[32:01] anybody was bringing flowers to bring them. Katy's coffin was escorted into the church
[32:07] in a horse drawn carriage, and the horses were adorned with purple and Katy's
[32:12] name was over the top of the carriage. Following the service, Katy was
[32:16] buried at Burnley Cemetery. Then, on the twenty second of August, Andrew
[32:25] Burfield pleaded not guilty to the murder of Kayrie oppressed in Krown Court. Judge
[32:31] Robert Altham then informed him that his murder trial would be taking place on the
[32:36] fourteenth of November. A jury consisting of four men and eight women was selected
[32:43] and seated, and opening statements were ready to begin. Impressed in Krown Court
[32:46] as scheduled. On the fourteenth of November two thousand and twenty two, Andrew
[32:52] Burfield was escorted into the courtroom dressed in a light blue shirt with a dark
[32:57] colored tie and dark trousers. He took his place at the defense table alongside
[33:02] his attorneys Tim Story and John Woodward. Prosecutor David McLaughlin said to the jury
[33:09] during his opening statements that when Andrew was arrested, he denied any involvement in
[33:15] Katy's disappearance. However, in his penultimate interview, he decided to change his
[33:22] version of events. He told detectives he had taken Katy to Gisburne forrest for
[33:27] a picnic, where a terrible accident occurred. He said that Katy had bad
[33:32] him he couldn't hit account of coke she was holding. With his axe,
[33:37] he said, he threw the ox in the direction of a tree, but
[33:40] it struck Katy instead. According to Andrew, that ox only struck Katy once
[33:46] and that was the only injury she sustained, but her autopsy had proven otherwise.
[33:53] Katy had been struck with the ox and estimated twelve times. After ki
[34:00] ailing Katy, Andrew said he buried her out in the forest. However,
[34:05] detectives had learned that the day before Katy was killed, Andrew had borrowed a
[34:09] set of ladders and a spade from his father CAZTV footage showed him driving out
[34:15] to Gisburne Forest, and prosecutor said that this was when he dug Katy's grave,
[34:22] indicating premeditation. The prosecutor stated, it's the prosecution's case that Andrew Burfield
[34:30] had been out on that night on an important mission and that was in order
[34:34] to dig a grave, and it was to dig Katy Kenyon's grave. When
[34:38] he returned home, he texted a woman named Amanda Cox, who he had
[34:42] been seeing and told her that he was proper knackered. Prosecutor McLaughlin said to
[34:49] the jury he may well have been knackered, but that was because he had
[34:52] been digging a grave for Katie Kenyon. He then highlighted the fact that Katie's
[34:58] mobile phone data her traveling back home from the forest, yet CCTV only showed
[35:04] Andrew Burfield returning alone. He said to the jury, Katie Kenyon, the
[35:10] prosecution say, at this stage, was in a carefully constructed grave that had
[35:15] been dug the night before by Andrew Burfield. After returning home alone, Andrew
[35:22] proceeded to send text messages to her children from her mobile phone to give the
[35:28] impression that she was alive. The prosecutor pointed out that in the message,
[35:32] Katie's daughter received, the word while had been spelled wila, which was the
[35:39] same spelling that Andrew Burfield used. The test only got underway with the detective
[35:45] Sergeant Stephen Akers, testifying about the timeline of events in the case. The
[35:52] WhatsApp messages, texts, voicemails, images, and CCTV footage were shown to
[35:57] the jury outlining Katie and Andrew's movements. He testified that on the twenty first
[36:04] of April, Katy had traveled to Andrew's home instead. For a few hours,
[36:09] they continued texting one another, seemingly excited about a new chapter in their
[36:14] lives. After this, Andrew went to his father's home to borrow a spade
[36:19] in a set of ladders. He was then observed traveling towards Gisburne Forest,
[36:24] where he remained for one hour and fifty minutes. The prosecution said that this
[36:30] was when he was digging Katy's grave for the following day, the detective also
[36:36] told the jury about the bloody items Andrew had disposed of in the oars after
[36:39] Katy was killed. After the detective stepped down, the case took an unexpected
[36:45] twist when Andrew changed his play from not guilty to guilty. The sentencing phase
[36:52] was scheduled for the following day, but this sudden admission brought a wave of
[36:57] relief to Katy's family. They had always suspected Andrew's involvement, and now they
[37:04] finally had the resolution they had been seeking. But it was bittersweet outside of
[37:09] court. Detective Chief Inspector Alan Dave steered myself and Kate's family welcome Today's guilty
[37:17] belief and Andrew Berfield mister Burfield is a man who are elected to run a
[37:22] trial despite overwhelming evidence of the barbaric and violent nature of his attack on Located.
[37:32] In my entire police service, I have never come across an occasion where
[37:37] I've cinema who's had such a degree of premeditated planning and cowardly methodical planning to
[37:43] kill somebody. Through the investigation, we were able to establish that mister Burfield
[37:49] had in fact travels to the air of Bolton by Bolland Forest the day prior
[37:52] to Katy's murder. We also have established that he took a spade in order
[37:57] to dig a shallow grave. Additional to this, one of the most chilling
[38:01] aspects of this is that mister Burfield had actually planned to do this in weeks
[38:07] earlier. We were able to establish digital evidence that he had written text messages
[38:12] that he subsequently went on to send to Katy's family. We know the murder's
[38:16] intent on his mind at the point where he's drafted those messages. I would
[38:22] also like to highlight that Katie and who kat was. Katie's a happy,
[38:29] loving move of two. She had a whole life ahead of her. This
[38:34] life was snatched from it by the evil act of Andrew Burfield. Well,
[38:38] that life was not just taken away from Katy, it was a Katy taken
[38:42] away from her whole family and her children. I sincerely hope that today's guilty
[38:46] plea brings some closure to the family. Andrew Burfield returned to court the next
[38:52] morning, and Katy's family were there to provide a victim impact statement. They
[38:59] said that the twenty second of April twenty twenty two was a date that none
[39:02] of them would ever forget. They continued steering when the messages were received that
[39:08] afternoon. We knew immediately that something wasn't right. Katie would never have left
[39:14] her children like that, and there was all sorts going through our heads.
[39:17] We went out looking for her almost straight away, and we sensed then that
[39:22] Burfield was behind it. The family described how they went through a week of
[39:27] torture as detective searched for Kayrie. They stated, we lived and hoped that
[39:34] she would be found alive and that she was safe. It was a coping
[39:37] mechanism, but with each police visit in the passage of time, we knew
[39:42] deep down that the outcome was not going to be a good one. They
[39:45] said that they were incredibly lucky that they were a strong family and that they
[39:50] drew on that strength to get through the ordeal together. They stated, we
[39:55] went to see Katie at the Mortree the following day. Her face was bruised,
[40:00] but she still looked so beautiful, but she was behind glass. We
[40:05] couldn't touch her or hold her, and it felt impersonal. I wanted to
[40:08] say goodbye to her, to say things to her, and to hold her,
[40:13] but we could not do any of this. Burfield even took that away
[40:16] from us. Katie was kept in a closed casket because of her injuries,
[40:22] and this prevented us from ever seeing her again or getting that time with her
[40:25] in a chapel of rest. The family also said that Katie had told them
[40:30] she wanted to stop Andrew Burfield from being able to do what he did to
[40:34] her to another woman. They said that she wanted answers, and this ended
[40:39] up costing her her life. The statement concluded Katie was beautiful and silly.
[40:46] The kids called her Auntie crazy. She made some stupid decisions, but she
[40:52] had a truly beautiful soul. She was always surrounded by children her own and
[40:58] anyone else's who wanted to join in. She would take the kids and the
[41:00] dogs everywhere with her. She even tried to set up a summer camp for
[41:05] the local children so that they had something to do and somewhere to go.
[41:09] She loved the outdoors and she loved people. We miss her beyond words,
[41:15] and we will never get over her loss. Mister Justice Goose then addressed Andrey
[41:20] Burfield. He said that Andrey had been controlling and manipulative to Katrie all throughout
[41:27] their relationship. He suggested that he got Katye into the van that morning by
[41:31] telling her that he was taking her to therapy. The judge said that Katy
[41:37] had looked to him for love and support, and in return, he planned
[41:42] and carried out her murder. He stated, this was not heat of the
[41:46] moment. It involved planning, lies, the destruction of evidence, and an
[41:52] implausible defense. Your murder of Katrie was as cruel as it was savage.
[41:59] The calmness you spled before, during, and after proves your dangerousness. You
[42:04] plan to kill her that day. You planned this as early as April fourth,
[42:08] when you wrote notes on your phone to her children. You encouraged her
[42:13] to look forward to her new start and she believed you. Andrew Burfield was
[42:19] then sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of thirty two years.
