[0:01] Speaker 1: This episode is brought to you by P and C Bank.
[0:03] Speaker 1: A lot of people think podcasts about work are boring,
[0:06] Speaker 1: and sure they definitely can be, but understanding a professionals
[0:10] Speaker 1: routine shows us how they achieve their success little by little,
[0:14] Speaker 1: day after day. It's like banking with P and C Bank.
[0:18] Speaker 1: It might seem boring to save, plan and make calculated
[0:21] Speaker 1: decisions with your bank, but keeping your money boring is
[0:24] Speaker 1: what helps you live or more happily fulfilled life. P
[0:27] Speaker 1: and C Bank Brilliantly Boring since eighteen sixty five. Brilliantly
[0:32] Speaker 1: Boring since eighteen sixty five is a service mark of
[0:35] Speaker 1: the PNC Financial Service Group, Inc. P and C Bank
[0:39] Speaker 1: National Association Member FDIC.
[0:43] Speaker 2: Well, let me ask you this because I feel like
[0:47] Speaker 2: there's a lesson in every story, and there's something that
[0:51] Speaker 2: you can take from every story and learn from every story.
[0:55] Speaker 2: And sometimes what we think is reality isn't reality. And
[1:00] Speaker 2: it's important for people to know the truth. And it's
[1:02] Speaker 2: important for people to learn from other people's experiences because
[1:06] Speaker 2: it could potentially happen to you. So a few years ago,
[1:10] Speaker 2: we had a former president, Donald Trump, and it was
[1:13] Speaker 2: very controversial when you took a picture with him, and
[1:18] Speaker 2: you got a lot of backlash, a lot of hate,
[1:21] Speaker 2: all conds of negative energy.
[1:23] Speaker 3: But when we met you, you explained to us the story.
[1:27] Speaker 2: And when you explain to us the story, it was
[1:29] Speaker 2: so crazy because it just goes to show you how
[1:32] Speaker 2: something can be changed and the narrative can be painted
[1:35] Speaker 2: and people just run with half of what they see
[1:38] Speaker 2: and they don't even understand it.
[1:40] Speaker 3: Can you explain that infamous moment?
[1:44] Speaker 4: Well, first of all, if I listened to my wife,
[1:48] Speaker 4: it wouldn't have been no infamous moment.
[1:50] Speaker 5: First lesson, that's the first lesson.
[1:52] Speaker 3: Lesson number one.
[1:54] Speaker 4: That's number one. But here's what happened. Before he got
[2:00] Speaker 4: I had sworn in. He had appointed Ben Carson to
[2:05] Speaker 4: the head of HUD, and HUD is housing in urban Development.
[2:11] Speaker 5: It's the only black on the cabinet.
[2:14] Speaker 4: So I said, let me go up there and meet
[2:17] Speaker 4: Ben Carson. So when I got to Trump Towers, I
[2:22] Speaker 4: went in, sat down to meet with him, and he said,
[2:24] Speaker 4: why are you here. I said, I want to meet
[2:26] Speaker 4: Ben Carson because I have an idea. He got Ben
[2:30] Speaker 4: Carson on the phone, being Ben Carson talked right away.
[2:35] Speaker 4: I told him the idea I had. I wanted to
[2:37] Speaker 4: take some of these schools that they had destroyed and
[2:40] Speaker 4: shut down in black neighborhoods, and I wanted to take
[2:43] Speaker 4: them and turn them into what I call Vision centers,
[2:47] Speaker 4: where we would create financial literacy after school programs, you know,
[2:52] Speaker 4: and get these young cats off the streets so they
[2:55] Speaker 4: have something to do, and then give the parents some
[2:57] Speaker 4: financial literacy. He fell in love with the idea. I
[3:03] Speaker 4: leave the building. I'm on the elevator. Donald Trump say
[3:07] Speaker 4: I'll ride down with you. I said, I beat damn.
[3:13] Speaker 4: So he gets on the elevator. He riding down with him. Now,
[3:16] Speaker 4: before I got on elevator, I told the reporters I'll
[3:19] Speaker 4: be back over and tell you why I'm here. I
[3:22] Speaker 4: walk up to the reporters. He walks in front of me.
[3:25] Speaker 4: He the president, to be right, So he walks.
[3:28] Speaker 5: In front of me. Now I'm standing there. First word
[3:30] Speaker 5: out his mouth.
[3:31] Speaker 4: Was we gonna repeal and replace Obamacare.
[3:35] Speaker 5: I didn't say shit about that. I didn't mention none
[3:40] Speaker 5: of that. Then, oh, what you're talking about? Man?
[3:43] Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying. I'm sitting here going I'll
[3:45] Speaker 4: beat damn. And all I heard was my wife going,
[3:48] Speaker 4: don't go up there yet. So when he left, I
[3:53] Speaker 4: stood up and told the reporters what the deal was.
[3:57] Speaker 4: By the time I got to my car, because this happen,
[4:00] Speaker 4: and on my sixtieth birthday was that weekend, my wife
[4:04] Speaker 4: had a nice trip for me. All I had to
[4:07] Speaker 4: do was go get on that damn boat, like she said,
[4:09] Speaker 4: That's all my ass had to do. But oh, knew
[4:14] Speaker 4: I'm gonna go up here for black people before.
[4:17] Speaker 5: I got in the car. I couldn't believe it. I
[4:24] Speaker 5: couldn't believe it.
[4:25] Speaker 4: Man. I was a coon, I was a jigaboot, I
[4:30] Speaker 4: was a spook. I was an Uncle Tom. And that
[4:34] Speaker 4: shit hurt me to the core because all I do
[4:39] Speaker 4: when I wake up is walk out the door as
[4:42] Speaker 4: a black man, to represent the black culture, to be
[4:46] Speaker 4: something that some young person can look at.
[4:48] Speaker 5: And go, yeah, I do it that way.
[4:51] Speaker 4: My whole hustling grind has been for black people.
[4:54] Speaker 5: And so it kind of hurt me.
[4:56] Speaker 3: Man.
[4:57] Speaker 5: And so his.
[4:58] Speaker 4: Fast forward turns out the Vision Centers was the only
[5:04] Speaker 4: initiative Ben Carson had his entire run. They changed the
[5:09] Speaker 4: name of it from Vision Centers to Vision Centers. You
[5:14] Speaker 4: can go online look them up. They opened up three
[5:16] Speaker 4: of them, all the ideas I had given them, they
[5:21] Speaker 4: enabled it. Then they asked me to come take a
[5:23] Speaker 4: picture with being Carson in front of the schools, and
[5:27] Speaker 4: I said na, because y'all had ate my ass up
[5:30] Speaker 4: so bad before. Y'all ain't getting no more pictures of me.
[5:35] Speaker 4: My family got attacked and all this here.
[5:38] Speaker 5: But that was a.
[5:40] Speaker 4: Hurtful moment for me because I went up there to
[5:44] Speaker 4: get housing and benefit for black people and then they
[5:48] Speaker 4: turned on me like that, you know, But I always
[5:51] Speaker 4: know how to hang in there. You know. It's kind
[5:53] Speaker 4: of like, I know it's a lot of hip hop
[5:55] Speaker 4: casts in here, but old school music still registers very
[5:59] Speaker 4: deep in my I'm an R and B guy. So
[6:01] Speaker 4: there's a song that Temptations had out, and I had
[6:05] Speaker 4: to sing it to myself. I know you won't leave me,
[6:09] Speaker 4: but I refuse to let you go. If I have
[6:12] Speaker 4: to beg and plead for your.
[6:14] Speaker 5: Sympathy, I don't mind, because you mean that much to me.
[6:18] Speaker 5: So I just hung in there with black people.
[6:21] Speaker 4: I just stayed in that with y'all's asked because I
[6:23] Speaker 4: knew eventually y'all was gonna have to get all right.
[6:28] Speaker 5: Well, some of y'all didn't. But it's cool though, But.
[6:32] Speaker 2: I want to ask you about that because when you
[6:35] Speaker 2: reach levels of success, especially now, you're gonna get some
[6:38] Speaker 2: level of hate online. You're gonna get some level of
[6:42] Speaker 2: hate on YouTube, You're gonna get critics, and it has
[6:46] Speaker 2: it has an effect on your on your psyche.
[6:50] Speaker 3: So how would you how would you coach people through?
[6:53] Speaker 2: What advice would you give to the young people that
[6:55] Speaker 2: haven't experienced that yet. But they might be in sports,
[6:58] Speaker 2: they might be in music, they might be entrepreneur, they
[7:00] Speaker 2: might be online at some point when that comes, what
[7:04] Speaker 2: do you do to just keep going?
[7:06] Speaker 4: It's interesting because I was talking to Walker Flocker backstage
[7:10] Speaker 4: and he came up to me and said, hey, man,
[7:14] Speaker 4: you don't know what you mean to me. I've never
[7:16] Speaker 4: met the brother before and he was saying, you don't
[7:19] Speaker 4: know what you mean to me.
[7:20] Speaker 5: He said, Man, I follow you. I listened to you. Man.
[7:23] Speaker 4: He said, man, you changed from just a comedian to
[7:26] Speaker 4: a real man, and you made me start looking at
[7:29] Speaker 4: some things I want to do. And then we shook hands.
[7:31] Speaker 4: He was fitting to walk away and he turned around.
[7:33] Speaker 4: He said, you know what else I like about you? Man?
[7:37] Speaker 4: You ain't vengeful. You're not vengeful. And that kind of
[7:42] Speaker 4: stuck with me, so I said, how you mean? He said, man,
[7:45] Speaker 4: you could come back at so many people. But I
[7:47] Speaker 4: don't never see you going out to attack people because
[7:51] Speaker 4: I learned a long time ago from a minister. He said,
[7:55] Speaker 4: stay on the wall. When they throwing rocks at you,
[7:59] Speaker 4: stay on wall. If you come down off the wall
[8:03] Speaker 4: to address haters and small people see they eye level
[8:07] Speaker 4: with you.
[8:08] Speaker 5: Now. Now they can.
[8:09] Speaker 4: Throw the rocks and they hurt. But if you just
[8:11] Speaker 4: stay on the wall, what can they do.
[8:14] Speaker 5: And you gotta.
[8:14] Speaker 4: Understand some young people about haters. Haters are not decision makers,
[8:19] Speaker 4: power brokers, or shakers and movers. They have no determining
[8:23] Speaker 4: factor on your life, where you headed, or what God
[8:27] Speaker 4: planned for you.
[8:28] Speaker 5: Stop giving haters power.
[8:31] Speaker 3: Stop it.
[8:31] Speaker 4: Don't even talk to they ass I don't give it. Look, man,
[8:34] Speaker 4: I'm sixty five. I don't give a damn what you
[8:37] Speaker 4: say about me.
[8:39] Speaker 5: You ain't.
[8:40] Speaker 4: You're not stopping nothing. Look what God has for you,
[8:45] Speaker 4: it is yours. All God's plans for you, his purpose.
[8:50] Speaker 4: If you just open up yourself to them, he gonna
[8:53] Speaker 4: make all of them come true. But if you stop
[8:56] Speaker 4: and keep addressing haters, you will never be open to
[9:00] Speaker 4: your purpose and your mission in life.
[9:02] Speaker 5: So my directive is to stay on the wall.
[9:06] Speaker 4: When they attacked me for whatever, I stay on the
[9:09] Speaker 4: wall because they do it all the time, man, especially people.
[9:12] Speaker 5: I thought I was cool with other celebrities.
[9:15] Speaker 4: You know, they got little stuff to say, But then
[9:17] Speaker 4: I look at their career and they.
[9:19] Speaker 5: Have time to say little stuff. They have time. See.
[9:28] Speaker 5: Let me tell you something, man, People is busy. They
[9:30] Speaker 5: ain't got time.
[9:32] Speaker 4: Denzel ain't got time talk about me, Magic.
[9:35] Speaker 5: Johnson ain't got time talking about Tyler Perry.
[9:37] Speaker 4: Ain't got time talk about me because they building their empire. Man,
[9:42] Speaker 4: let me tell you something, man. One time I was
[9:44] Speaker 4: sitting to respond to something on the blog. Tyler Perry
[9:48] Speaker 4: called me and said, hey, man, what you getting ready
[9:50] Speaker 4: to do. I said, I'm going on CNN with Anderson
[9:53] Speaker 4: Cooper and I'm straighten this whole thing out in them blogs.
[9:57] Speaker 5: He said, no, you're not. He said.
[9:59] Speaker 4: You know why, He said, listen to me, Steve. When
[10:02] Speaker 4: they talk about you, it's a blog. If you open
[10:06] Speaker 4: your mouth, it's a press conference. You got to know
[10:10] Speaker 4: who you are. So I say to all people out there,
[10:14] Speaker 4: know who you are and know where God taking you.
[10:17] Speaker 5: Get up on the wall and stay there. That's powerful Erness.
