[0:36] Speaker 2: There's a it's a private residence, but it's near Little Oklahoma,
[0:41] Speaker 2: which I never heard about until this particular time. But
[0:44] Speaker 2: it's an area in Port Angelas, so you can find
[0:46] Speaker 2: it on the map to kind of get an overview
[0:48] Speaker 2: of like, Okay, it's this area. I can't reveal the
[0:51] Speaker 2: address or anything like that, but some of the cold
[0:54] Speaker 2: case detectives were following up on some leads and stuff
[0:57] Speaker 2: and found this particular resident is it was associated with
[1:02] Speaker 2: a friend of Keys, and so interviewing this couple that
[1:06] Speaker 2: owned the residents, they learned that, yeah, he's had his
[1:08] Speaker 2: boat in there and was doing a lot of his
[1:10] Speaker 2: boat work at that time at this particular location, which was.
[1:15] Speaker 3: New to us.
[1:15] Speaker 2: We assumed he had hauled the boat all the way
[1:17] Speaker 2: to Nia Bay and was doing a lot of the
[1:20] Speaker 2: work on it there. Lor Angels actually makes a lot
[1:22] Speaker 2: of sense because that's where all the stores are where
[1:24] Speaker 2: he would have, you know, gone to get supplies and
[1:27] Speaker 2: stuff to fix up the boat. So it makes perfect sense.
[1:30] Speaker 2: But again another data point where Okay, here's a location
[1:33] Speaker 2: where you know he was working on his boat and
[1:35] Speaker 2: had access to and so we've been invited to go
[1:39] Speaker 2: out and take a look at the area in the
[1:41] Speaker 2: future and just check it out for whatever may becomes
[1:44] Speaker 2: significant from that. But that was something new that we
[1:47] Speaker 2: learned from this cold case that's been working on this.
[1:54] Speaker 1: I've never been under any illusion about my relationship with
[1:57] Speaker 1: Hula and the Greater FBI. I'm a tool to them.
[2:01] Speaker 1: He'll tell me just enough to get me working on something,
[2:05] Speaker 1: to connect the dots, do the leg work, find the
[2:08] Speaker 1: right people, incite the right tips and questions. The relationship
[2:13] Speaker 1: only appears symbiotic. So when Halla told me about this
[2:18] Speaker 1: house in Little Oklahoma, I was pretty certain he felt
[2:21] Speaker 1: it was important, but not necessarily the best use of
[2:25] Speaker 1: his limited time. But I'm happy to do the work
[2:30] Speaker 1: if it gets results. I believe the FBI or Haula
[2:34] Speaker 1: at a minimum, wants this case as close to solved
[2:38] Speaker 1: as it can be, and that's something we share. Whatever
[2:42] Speaker 1: solved may mean when it comes to Israel Keys. At
[2:47] Speaker 1: this point, I believe we know who ninety percent of
[2:51] Speaker 1: Keys as knowable victims are. That the evidence and information
[2:55] Speaker 1: we have points to specific people and incidents, and now
[3:01] Speaker 1: our main focus is to fill in the gaps, strengthen
[3:04] Speaker 1: our cases, get as close to confirmed as we can
[3:08] Speaker 1: with what little we have. And this boat house in
[3:11] Speaker 1: Port Angelis felt like a good lead to follow. This
[3:21] Speaker 1: is true crime bullshit. The Serialized Investigation into Israel Keys
[3:26] Speaker 1: Season seven, Episode three. Little Oklahoma Little Oklahoma is a
[3:39] Speaker 1: small and rural area in southeast Port Angelus. It's so rural,
[3:45] Speaker 1: in fact, that it's actually unincorporated Clallam County, not technically
[3:49] Speaker 1: within the city limits, and serviced by Clallam County rather
[3:53] Speaker 1: than the city itself. However, for postal and census reasons,
[3:58] Speaker 1: it's included as part of Port Angelus. Little Oklahoma surrounded
[4:04] Speaker 1: by the Olympic Mountains and their foothills to the west,
[4:07] Speaker 1: south and east to the north as wooded farmland. The
[4:11] Speaker 1: majority of the area roads or dirt roads or old
[4:14] Speaker 1: logging trails. It's within a mile of multiple campgrounds and trailheads,
[4:21] Speaker 1: and when I first Google mapped it, I immediately realized
[4:25] Speaker 1: its significance. It's where Kimberly lived when she and Keyes
[4:29] Speaker 1: started dating in or around late two thousand and four
[4:33] Speaker 1: until she moved to Alaska in two thousand and six.
[4:36] Speaker 1: It's where she was living when Keys got the Bayliner boat.
[4:43] Speaker 1: Staring at the map, I recalled a tip that came
[4:45] Speaker 1: into the FBI from Kim's former landlord on August nineteenth
[4:49] Speaker 1: of twenty thirteen. The tip's summary reads as follows. On
[4:54] Speaker 1: eight nineteen, twenty thirteen, Redacted called the Public Access Line
[4:58] Speaker 1: to report that Israel Keys was a visitor on her
[5:01] Speaker 1: property in Port Angelis, Washington. She reported that on her
[5:05] Speaker 1: property she had a rental home and Israel Keys dated
[5:08] Speaker 1: the girl who lived in that rental house from two
[5:10] Speaker 1: thousand and four to two thousand and six. She said
[5:13] Speaker 1: that Redacted rented the house from two thousand and four
[5:16] Speaker 1: to two thousand and six and Keys visited her several
[5:20] Speaker 1: times a month. She said that there is about a
[5:22] Speaker 1: two acre area behind the rental house that leads to
[5:25] Speaker 1: a creek. She said if the FBI wanted to look
[5:28] Speaker 1: on the property to just please contact her first because
[5:32] Speaker 1: there's a tenant living in the rental house.
[5:34] Speaker 4: Now.
[5:36] Speaker 1: The FBI's final pre assessment findings said this, The pollsbo
[5:40] Speaker 1: RA notes the caption matter, but at this time does
[5:43] Speaker 1: not see a need to search this property without other
[5:46] Speaker 1: indications that keys used the property for nefarious purposes.
[5:52] Speaker 5: He talked once about, ye, some of your friends may
[5:56] Speaker 5: have like unknowingly assisted you in some way. I've never
[6:01] Speaker 5: really understood how to take that comment. If it was,
[6:04] Speaker 5: you know, something like you know, we've seen that you're
[6:07] Speaker 5: not always one hundred percent honest on your time sheet,
[6:10] Speaker 5: and if it was something like your boss knowing you
[6:12] Speaker 5: were playing hooky or something like that, Is there anything
[6:16] Speaker 5: that you can tell us about it?
[6:23] Speaker 4: Oh?
[6:24] Speaker 3: There have been? Yeah. I mean, I nobody knows.
[6:37] Speaker 6: The reasons I would ask people to do things, or
[6:40] Speaker 6: the reasons I would give for why I was doing
[6:42] Speaker 6: them were seldom realistic with what was actually going on.
[6:54] Speaker 1: For a while, this new information sat on the back burner.
[6:59] Speaker 1: We had done of new leads from the new files
[7:02] Speaker 1: and my interviews with Haula, and we could only focus
[7:05] Speaker 1: on so many things at one time. But in that
[7:10] Speaker 1: time I happened to be on the Olympic Peninsula visiting family,
[7:16] Speaker 1: and so I made a point to drive out to
[7:17] Speaker 1: Little Oklahoma, among other places, not really knowing what I
[7:22] Speaker 1: was looking for or where I was going. We knew
[7:25] Speaker 1: that Kim had lived in the area, just not exactly where,
[7:28] Speaker 1: and we weren't even sure that the boat house was
[7:31] Speaker 1: on the same property that Kim was living in. Little
[7:36] Speaker 1: Oklahoma is rural flat lands. The houses in the area
[7:40] Speaker 1: are mostly on one to five acre plots. There's a
[7:44] Speaker 1: clear neighborhood, but with distance in trees between each house.
[7:48] Speaker 1: There were a lot of yard signs that painted a
[7:51] Speaker 1: fairly clear picture of the vibe there, don't tread on
[7:54] Speaker 1: me private property, shoot first, ask later, and so on.
[8:00] Speaker 1: I saw a few houses with large barns, but no
[8:03] Speaker 1: actual boat houses. It was off the beaten path, but
[8:07] Speaker 1: within a twenty minute drive of many of the places
[8:10] Speaker 1: that come up again and again in our investigation. Lake Crescent,
[8:15] Speaker 1: the Alwa Dam, Carlsborg Road and the Drive Through Coffee Stand,
[8:20] Speaker 1: Dungeness Forks Kitchen, Dick Road, Hurricane Coffee, the Burnt Hill
[8:25] Speaker 1: Shooting Range, and Hurricane Ridge. So I drove around, took
[8:31] Speaker 1: photos and videos, and then headed back for family gatherings.
[8:36] Speaker 1: But several weeks later the entire research team was in
[8:39] Speaker 1: the Berkshires for the summer studio sessions, and we started
[8:43] Speaker 1: looking back into this new information regarding Little Oklahoma. Within
[8:48] Speaker 1: fifteen minutes, we had the exact address, the property's MLS
[8:52] Speaker 1: information and history, Kimberly's address, and the homeowner's phone number.
[8:58] Speaker 1: The property is in a densely wood at the end
[9:01] Speaker 1: of a long driveway far off the street. It backs
[9:04] Speaker 1: up to a creek, and sure enough, there's an old
[9:07] Speaker 1: boat house on it among other outbuildings. And luckily for us,
[9:14] Speaker 1: the current homeowners are the same people who owned the
[9:16] Speaker 1: property back in two thousand and four, Kimberly's landlords and
[9:22] Speaker 1: so I called. Whenever I make these cold calls, I
[9:31] Speaker 1: expect to go straight to voicemail, but the homeowner, who
[9:34] Speaker 1: I'll call Guss for now, answered immediately. I introduced myself. Hi,
[9:40] Speaker 1: I'm an investigative reporter looking into a case and came
[9:43] Speaker 1: across your information in my files. He very riley responded,
[9:48] Speaker 1: and what case could that possibly be? We both laughed.
[9:53] Speaker 1: He confirmed that he and his wife owned and still
[9:56] Speaker 1: owned the property that kim lived on from December two
[9:59] Speaker 1: thousand and four till late two thousand and six, and
[10:02] Speaker 1: he confirmed that the property did in fact have a
[10:05] Speaker 1: boat house on it, one in which Israel Keys used
[10:09] Speaker 1: to work on his boat at some point. He said
[10:12] Speaker 1: that Keys had access to the boat house, but as
[10:15] Speaker 1: best he could tell, did not have a key to
[10:17] Speaker 1: any other buildings on the property, and that he knew
[10:20] Speaker 1: Keys had been on the property during times while Kim
[10:23] Speaker 1: was away working on his boat. He told me that
[10:30] Speaker 1: he and his wife had both met Keys on multiple
[10:33] Speaker 1: occasions and did not like him. His exact words were,
[10:37] Speaker 1: he gave us the creeps and we didn't trust him.
[10:41] Speaker 1: If we knew Keys was going to be on the property,
[10:44] Speaker 1: we would make efforts to be nearby so we could
[10:46] Speaker 1: keep an eye on him. Gus went on to tell
[10:50] Speaker 1: me that he'd called the FBI shortly after Keys was
[10:52] Speaker 1: arrested to tell them about his connection to the property
[10:56] Speaker 1: and give them access to search it, but he never
[11:00] Speaker 1: heard back and still hasn't heard back to this very day.
[11:06] Speaker 1: And then he volunteered something ominous that he believed and
[11:11] Speaker 1: still believes that Keys did something nefarious on his property,
[11:17] Speaker 1: that every time they've done work on the property over
[11:19] Speaker 1: the years, they've lived in absolute terror that they might
[11:23] Speaker 1: find human remains the team, and I knew of at
[11:30] Speaker 1: least two occasions when Keys worked on the boat, once
[11:34] Speaker 1: after he first got it, and a second time when
[11:36] Speaker 1: he had to replace the carpet.
[11:38] Speaker 3: Yeah, it doesn't look like anyone's been in there at
[11:40] Speaker 3: all since I.
[11:41] Speaker 6: I was surprised that how good the pulsary seemed like
[11:43] Speaker 6: it's in pretty good condition.
[11:44] Speaker 3: Still. Yeah, well it was all brand new. When was it?
[11:49] Speaker 6: That whole boat was gutted before I rebuilt it?
[11:53] Speaker 3: So why didn't you?
[11:55] Speaker 6: So you rebuilt it?
[11:56] Speaker 7: Like? It doesn't look like a nineteen eighty two boat
[11:58] Speaker 7: to me, That's why I.
[11:58] Speaker 6: Was, well, yeah, the the interior was trashed and I
[12:01] Speaker 6: got it, so it's all new seats and upholstery and
[12:03] Speaker 6: everything that makes sense.
[12:06] Speaker 3: And I think I had to replace some glass and
[12:09] Speaker 3: I don't know, just the carpeting and all that stuff.
[12:13] Speaker 6: I had to replaced the carpeting a couple of times,
[12:19] Speaker 6: at least on the back section.
[12:22] Speaker 7: Is that the brand new carpeting on the back section
[12:24] Speaker 7: now or is it being something that should be looked at?
[12:26] Speaker 6: Well, you might find stuff under the carpeting, but okay,
[12:29] Speaker 6: there was new carpet and then I got one on it.
[12:32] Speaker 3: So got it.
[12:35] Speaker 1: Okay, But this could mean there were more than two
[12:43] Speaker 1: times that Keys worked on that boat. He mentions working
[12:47] Speaker 1: on the boat after he first bought it, and again
[12:49] Speaker 1: when the motor died in June of two thousand and six.
[12:53] Speaker 1: He also mentions having to replace the carpet a couple
[12:56] Speaker 1: of times before tacitly laughing, And we can't say for
[13:01] Speaker 1: sure that the couple of times he replaced the carpet
[13:03] Speaker 1: are included in the repairs made at purchase and after
[13:07] Speaker 1: the motor died, or in addition to those repairs. We
[13:12] Speaker 1: started reviewing the timeline for occasions when Kimberly was out
[13:15] Speaker 1: of town and Keys was in the area and potentially
[13:18] Speaker 1: using the boat. Times when Keys could have been using
[13:22] Speaker 1: the boat house to make repairs or replace carpet while
[13:26] Speaker 1: kim was gone for several days or more. Times when
[13:32] Speaker 1: Keys could have been killing someone, dismembering a body, storing
[13:36] Speaker 1: a body, prepping a body for burial, and so on.
[13:44] Speaker 6: And then what about planning like the Washington State when
[13:47] Speaker 6: you had your boat out Do you remember those highly
[13:50] Speaker 6: planned organized Yeah, Washington was a lot easier in a
[13:56] Speaker 6: lot of ways, because once I lived out in Na Bay,
[14:03] Speaker 6: I knew all of Washington pretty well, and except I
[14:07] Speaker 6: was so isolated out there. Once you drive past Port Angelis,
[14:12] Speaker 6: it's like here in in the world anyways. So, m
[14:16] Speaker 6: what's that whole park? There's a hole set mountains right there,
[14:18] Speaker 6: right that temperates THEA Bay from Yeah, the Olympic Well,
[14:23] Speaker 6: there's the Olympic Grange Is.
[14:25] Speaker 3: There's mountains everywhere in there, but you don't really have
[14:29] Speaker 3: to go over any mountain passes or anything to Seattle,
[14:32] Speaker 3: but right right, no.
[14:33] Speaker 6: Not to get but there is that a parkman or oh, yeah,
[14:36] Speaker 6: in this area, Yeah, there's Once.
[14:39] Speaker 3: I had the boat, it was uh.
[14:42] Speaker 6: By then, I was pretty much coasting on my job,
[14:45] Speaker 6: so I would take off for long weekends, you know,
[14:48] Speaker 6: and I my accountability was.
[14:50] Speaker 3: Pretty well at that time. I don't think I had mkay.
[14:55] Speaker 6: I mean, I knew Kimberly, but you know, it wasn't
[14:57] Speaker 6: like it was just me with you any of it.
[15:02] Speaker 6: So it wasn't part of disappear Grifet day, right, And
[15:05] Speaker 6: she was pretty young man, so she most more often
[15:09] Speaker 6: than not she.
[15:10] Speaker 3: Just stayed in the abbey with babysitters and stuff.
[15:26] Speaker 1: To refresh your memory. Keyes first checked out the boat
[15:30] Speaker 1: over the weekend of April first, two thousand and five.
[15:34] Speaker 1: Based on the timeline, Keys either left in the early
[15:37] Speaker 1: morning hours of Thursday, March thirty first, or at some
[15:41] Speaker 1: point on April first. Now, according to the FBI interviews
[15:46] Speaker 1: with Keys, Keys took Tammy's son James with him on
[15:49] Speaker 1: this trek from Nia Bay to Moses Lake, where James's father,
[15:53] Speaker 1: Joe lived. Keyes said that while dropping James off, Joe
[15:57] Speaker 1: showed him the boat and talked him into buying it,
[16:00] Speaker 1: but according to Joe, that's not exactly what happened. In
[16:06] Speaker 1: an FBI interview, Joe said that James was living with
[16:10] Speaker 1: him full time in Moses Lake in the spring of
[16:13] Speaker 1: two thousand and five, and that Keys actually picked James
[16:17] Speaker 1: up from Moses Lake and brought him back to Nia
[16:20] Speaker 1: Bay to visit with Tammy, which would mean that Keys
[16:23] Speaker 1: was unaccounted for from either Thursday or Friday through Sunday
[16:27] Speaker 1: of that weekend. This was the same trip that Keyes
[16:31] Speaker 1: told Joe he was visiting family and Hunter's Washington, a
[16:35] Speaker 1: long weekend in eastern Washington. According to Keys, he either
[16:41] Speaker 1: picked up the boat or had it towed to Nia
[16:43] Speaker 1: Bay the following weekend, but according to Joe, Keys picked
[16:48] Speaker 1: up the boat himself from Moses Lake because he had
[16:52] Speaker 1: to return James at the time that he picked up
[16:54] Speaker 1: that boat. So, if we believed Joe over Keys, which
[16:59] Speaker 1: I think we should, good Keys was alone and unaccounted
[17:02] Speaker 1: for in the Moses Lake area on the weekend of
[17:05] Speaker 1: April first and the following weekend April eighth, at which
[17:10] Speaker 1: point he had the boat.
[17:13] Speaker 5: What was the boat like when you got as far
[17:15] Speaker 5: as what it looks like, you did a lot of
[17:16] Speaker 5: work on it, But what was Was it seaworthy when
[17:18] Speaker 5: you got it?
[17:19] Speaker 3: It would have floated? Yeah?
[17:22] Speaker 6: The engine, now, the engine didn't run very well.
[17:28] Speaker 3: The interior was trashed steering back. I mean it wasn't. No,
[17:33] Speaker 3: it wasn't.
[17:36] Speaker 6: It had potential, but it wasn't something you would take
[17:39] Speaker 6: out for the afternoon.
[17:40] Speaker 4: Okay, So how long have you had it before you
[17:43] Speaker 4: ended up getting it seaworthy?
[17:45] Speaker 8: It didn't take me very long, eh, I don't remember exactly.
[17:51] Speaker 8: And there was it seems like it took me a
[17:53] Speaker 8: while to get the tile or registration or something.
[17:58] Speaker 3: I don't know. There was some I have's some issue
[18:03] Speaker 3: with that too.
[18:04] Speaker 5: It's like, yeah, I don't think you registered until six,
[18:07] Speaker 5: and it's in two thousand and five, So okay.
[18:12] Speaker 3: It seems like I did. Yeah, I took it.
[18:14] Speaker 6: I'd taken it out a few times before it was registered.
[18:22] Speaker 1: Keys didn't register the boat until April seventeenth of two
[18:25] Speaker 1: thousand and six, over a year after purchasing it, and
[18:31] Speaker 1: in that time we know he used it at least
[18:34] Speaker 1: five times, including May twenty seventh, two thousand and five,
[18:39] Speaker 1: June fourth of two thousand and five, June seventeenth of
[18:43] Speaker 1: two thousand and five, July thirtieth of two thousand and five,
[18:48] Speaker 1: and August thirteenth of two thousand and five. It's important
[18:52] Speaker 1: to note that, according to everyone interviewed about the boat,
[18:56] Speaker 1: it's made in voyage was on that July thirtieth trip,
[19:00] Speaker 1: which means the previous three boat trips May twenty seventh,
[19:04] Speaker 1: June fourth, and June seventeen were likely unknown to his
[19:08] Speaker 1: friends and family and thus suspicious to us. Following his
[19:14] Speaker 1: registration of the boat, we can confirm that Keyes used
[19:18] Speaker 1: it at least four more times. May twenty third, two
[19:21] Speaker 1: thousand six, May twenty seventh, two thousand six, June seventeen,
[19:27] Speaker 1: two thousand six, and on June twenty fourth, two thousand six,
[19:33] Speaker 1: when the boat's motor died while he was out with friends.
[19:37] Speaker 1: At least two of these dates correspond to times when
[19:40] Speaker 1: Kimberly was out of town. According to the records that
[19:43] Speaker 1: we have, Kim was gone from August fourth through August
[19:47] Speaker 1: twenty second of two thousand five. According to the FBI timeline,
[19:51] Speaker 1: and according to multiple interviews with Keyes as friends, Kim
[19:55] Speaker 1: was out of town on at minimum June twenty third
[19:58] Speaker 1: and twenty fourth of two thousand and When we review
[20:02] Speaker 1: the two time frames where we know Keys worked on
[20:05] Speaker 1: the boat April ninth through May twenty sixth of two
[20:09] Speaker 1: thousand and five, following his purchase of the boat until
[20:12] Speaker 1: its first documented use, and following June twenty fourth of
[20:16] Speaker 1: two thousand and six, when the motor died, we can
[20:20] Speaker 1: see one common time frame. June twenty third and twenty
[20:25] Speaker 1: fourth of two thousand and six, the weekend that Stephen
[20:28] Speaker 1: Michael Mason disappeared while camping at the Dungeness Forks campground.
[20:36] Speaker 1: So let's take one more close look at both Mason's
[20:40] Speaker 1: and Keys's activity that weekend. According to an email sent
[20:44] Speaker 1: from Keys to Kimberley on June twenty second, he drove
[20:47] Speaker 1: to Ridgefield, Oregon, a town that doesn't exist, to pick
[20:51] Speaker 1: up an ATV that no one ever saw. Keys took
[20:55] Speaker 1: a long weekend from work in order to pick up
[20:58] Speaker 1: this mysterious atv. According to multiple friends, Kim was not
[21:03] Speaker 1: around on June twenty third or twenty fourth. We don't
[21:07] Speaker 1: know the full extent of her absence at the time,
[21:10] Speaker 1: just that she wasn't around on those two specific dates.
[21:14] Speaker 1: At around eight a m. On June twenty third, Mike
[21:17] Speaker 1: Mason's friend Jerry reported that he had a few beers
[21:20] Speaker 1: with Mike at the Dungeness Fork's campground. When asked if
[21:23] Speaker 1: he wanted a ride, Mike told him that some guy
[21:26] Speaker 1: was coming to pick him up at around nine a m.
[21:29] Speaker 1: This was the last reported sighting of Mike. Late that
[21:33] Speaker 1: same evening, Keys a scene for the first time all
[21:37] Speaker 1: weekend at a bonfire at his friend's house in Nea Bay,
[21:41] Speaker 1: and according to one friend, I was quiet and distant
[21:45] Speaker 1: that night with a metal rod of some sort, like
[21:48] Speaker 1: a poker but different, might have even been a metal
[21:51] Speaker 1: coat hanger straightened out. He sat there quietly with the
[21:55] Speaker 1: rod in the fire, pulling it out and staring at
[21:58] Speaker 1: the tip red with heat. When we saw that he
[22:01] Speaker 1: took off his shoes and socks and was trying to
[22:03] Speaker 1: brand himself with it, we jumped up to intervene. We
[22:07] Speaker 1: talked him down out of whatever day's state he was in.
[22:12] Speaker 1: The following day, on June twenty fourth, Keys and those
[22:15] Speaker 1: same friends went boating on Lake Ozette. While they were
[22:18] Speaker 1: on the lake, the outboard engine on the boat blew
[22:21] Speaker 1: a rod and they were stranded on the lake. And
[22:25] Speaker 1: according to Keys, he took the boat to a boat
[22:28] Speaker 1: house to work on it the next day and he
[22:30] Speaker 1: never used the boat again.
[22:33] Speaker 7: I know you when we talked to you about it before.
[22:35] Speaker 7: I wasn't in here, but I think it was Jeff
[22:36] Speaker 7: and Steve that were in here. You mentioned that there
[22:39] Speaker 7: might be where there might be something, some blood or
[22:42] Speaker 7: something like that was left.
[22:45] Speaker 3: And answer that question, yeah, I know had taken it apart.
[22:49] Speaker 7: But if you can look at these and if you
[22:52] Speaker 7: can see just maybe looking at him when refresh your
[22:56] Speaker 7: memory about where something might be or you know what
[23:01] Speaker 7: what they should look for.
[23:03] Speaker 3: You're looking that bad of shape, does it that there's
[23:10] Speaker 3: oh it's gonna be in that in a well?
[23:14] Speaker 7: Yeah?
[23:14] Speaker 3: Where where's where is the top end of the motor
[23:17] Speaker 3: on this side, anywhere on this side. I guess if you.
[23:24] Speaker 6: Find anything that's gonna be along these trim pieces, like
[23:27] Speaker 6: underneath them or something. Mkay, so as it got it,
[23:31] Speaker 6: you know, I got on the fiberglass. I cleaned it,
[23:34] Speaker 6: but I don't know if I where's the top end
[23:41] Speaker 6: of the moment. I it probably got junk. I remember
[23:48] Speaker 6: I took it apart figure out what was wrong with
[23:52] Speaker 6: the motor. And I think by the time I had
[23:56] Speaker 6: figured out what was wrong or that I decided the
[23:58] Speaker 6: whole motor was gonna be scraps. I think, yeah, I
[24:01] Speaker 6: think I just threw a wheel on the parts they
[24:03] Speaker 6: took off.
[24:09] Speaker 1: Stephen Michael Mason disappeared while Keys was unaccounted for. Kim
[24:14] Speaker 1: was out of town and a day before the motor
[24:16] Speaker 1: on his boat broke, the same motor that he told
[24:20] Speaker 1: the FBI to check for blood, the motor that blew
[24:23] Speaker 1: a rod the day after Mason went missing, the day
[24:27] Speaker 1: after Keys was seen burning and trying to brand himself
[24:30] Speaker 1: with a metal rod. Mason disappeared while camping at Dungeness
[24:35] Speaker 1: Forks Campground, not far from Burnt Hill, the unofficial shooting
[24:39] Speaker 1: range where Keys was known to shoot his guns. There's
[24:43] Speaker 1: a small creek that spans two miles between Burnt Hill
[24:47] Speaker 1: and Dungeness Forks Campground, Karaco Creek. I now believe with
[24:53] Speaker 1: as much certainty as I can, that Stephen Michael Mason
[24:57] Speaker 1: was abducted and killed by Israel Keys that as remains
[25:01] Speaker 1: were submerged in Lake Ozette. And check out the next
[25:06] Speaker 1: episode of Somewhere in the Pines to see what additional
[25:10] Speaker 1: information Joshua has dug up on Mike Mason's case. Of
[25:29] Speaker 1: all the dates and time frames we've discussed, that June
[25:33] Speaker 1: two thousand and sixth weekend isn't the only one that
[25:36] Speaker 1: stands out to me. There are two others. August thirteenth
[25:42] Speaker 1: of two thousand and five, which we'll save for a
[25:45] Speaker 1: future episode, and April ninth through May twenty sixth of
[25:49] Speaker 1: two thousand and five. That period between Keys buying the
[25:52] Speaker 1: boat and its first documented voyage, Well, we believe, but
[25:59] Speaker 1: don't I know with certainty that the boat changed hands
[26:02] Speaker 1: from Joe to Keys on April ninth. Its bill of
[26:06] Speaker 1: sale is dated April fifteenth, two thousand and five. The
[26:10] Speaker 1: same day name is forty five Missing person Ray Greecard
[26:13] Speaker 1: disappeared from central Pennsylvania. We don't currently believe that Keys
[26:17] Speaker 1: had anything to do with Greecard's disappearance, but we do
[26:21] Speaker 1: believe that Keyes was searching for someone else at that time.
[26:26] Speaker 1: Exactly a week later, Wendy to Hoop disappeared from Eugene, Oregon.
[26:34] Speaker 1: We spent a lot of time looking into Wendy's case
[26:37] Speaker 1: and always considered her a likely potential victim, but when
[26:41] Speaker 1: I met with Agent Haula last year, he said that
[26:44] Speaker 1: it was unlikely that Keyes was involved in Wendy's disappearance.
[26:48] Speaker 1: He and Kimberly were on a romantic weekend in eastern
[26:52] Speaker 1: Washington wine tasting from April twenty second, the day Wendy disappeared,
[26:57] Speaker 1: until April twenty fourth, to several emails they found. He
[27:04] Speaker 1: also noted that Keys made purchases in Port Angelis on
[27:08] Speaker 1: the twenty second, and additional purchases place him in Kingston Outlook,
[27:13] Speaker 1: Zillah and Prosser, Washington on the rest of that weekend.
[27:17] Speaker 1: When he told me all of this, I do what
[27:19] Speaker 1: I usually do when a case is ruled out. I
[27:23] Speaker 1: pull it off my shelves and put it in a
[27:25] Speaker 1: cabinet out of sight. No longer a distraction, but for
[27:31] Speaker 1: some reason it didn't feel right and Tooks agreed, so
[27:36] Speaker 1: we decided to pull the binder out of the cabinet
[27:38] Speaker 1: and put it back on the shelves, because unlikely, after all,
[27:43] Speaker 1: does not mean impossible, especially when it comes to Israel Keys.
[27:50] Speaker 1: As I was researching for this episode, going over dates
[27:53] Speaker 1: that Keys had the boat and Kimberly was gone, I
[27:56] Speaker 1: noticed something something now that seems so obvious. Keyes and
[28:01] Speaker 1: Kimberly didn't leave for that weekend getaway on the twenty second.
[28:05] Speaker 1: They left on the twenty third. There is a Kingston
[28:10] Speaker 1: to Edmunds ferry transaction for eight am on April twenty third,
[28:15] Speaker 1: the route someone would take to travel from the Peninsula
[28:18] Speaker 1: to eastern Washington, and the other transactions Haula mentioned also
[28:24] Speaker 1: indicated that Keyes was still on the peninsula until the
[28:27] Speaker 1: morning of the twenty third. His Kingston transactions, none of
[28:32] Speaker 1: them were on the twenty second. We don't know what
[28:36] Speaker 1: time the Port Angelus transactions occurred on the twenty second,
[28:39] Speaker 1: but what I do know is that Eugene, Oregon is
[28:43] Speaker 1: only a six hour drive from Port Angelus, and Wendy
[28:47] Speaker 1: de who disappeared between seven and seven forty five am,
[28:53] Speaker 1: meaning Keys could have been back in Port Angelus by
[28:57] Speaker 1: one pm, where he'd have eighteen hours to himself before
[29:03] Speaker 1: leaving on a vacation with Kim, as he did with
[29:07] Speaker 1: Samantha Konig. He had also clearly told his employers that
[29:12] Speaker 1: he'd be gone on the twenty second. Keyes and Kim
[29:23] Speaker 1: returned from wine tasting on the night of the twenty fourth,
[29:27] Speaker 1: and several days later, on the twenty eighth, the Hoop's purse,
[29:31] Speaker 1: with her wallet missing, was dropped off at a buy
[29:34] Speaker 1: mart in Eugene by a man who said he found
[29:36] Speaker 1: it while walking his dog. On May second, Wendy's car
[29:41] Speaker 1: was found abandoned along a wooded highway not far from
[29:44] Speaker 1: where her purse was found. It was the first reported
[29:47] Speaker 1: sighting of it. That same evening, for reasons unclear, Keyes
[29:53] Speaker 1: was on a ferry from Edmunds to Kingston. It gets
[30:01] Speaker 1: harder and harder to negotiate Keys's propensity and capability for love.
[30:08] Speaker 1: We hear moments of consideration, shame, pain, and they often
[30:14] Speaker 1: sound and look like love. But then we think of
[30:19] Speaker 1: all the times he used his friends and family to
[30:21] Speaker 1: get away with murder, hiding guns, family vacations, boat trips,
[30:28] Speaker 1: road trips, and so on. We're left wondering what love
[30:32] Speaker 1: could be to someone like Israel Keys. Did he love
[30:38] Speaker 1: his daughter or did he use his daughter? Did he
[30:43] Speaker 1: love Kim or did he use Kim? Is it somewhere
[30:48] Speaker 1: in between or is it both? And we wonder, and
[30:54] Speaker 1: then we have the privilege of moving on to something else,
[30:58] Speaker 1: the privilege of moving back back into our own lives.
[31:03] Speaker 1: How lucky are we?
[31:34] Speaker 9: I think I know you well at least Dan think.
[31:44] Speaker 9: Do a person strange.
[31:54] Speaker 3: Sleeping in my bed?
[31:58] Speaker 10: I know who?
