## Transcript

[0:00] Speaker 1: It's Jonny Manziel.
[0:02] Speaker 2: You were living the lifestyle of a rock star, playing football,
[0:05] Speaker 2: sitting in the back of a Rolls Royce, smoking a
[0:07] Speaker 2: with Drake, 18 years old, and I'm like, this is
[0:10] Speaker 2: what it's about.
[0:10] Speaker 3: The night before the Browns final game in 2015. Can
[0:12] Speaker 3: we talk about this? You were allegedly spotted in Las
[0:15] Speaker 3: Vegas wearing a blonde wig, a fake mustache, checking into
[0:18] Speaker 3: the Cosmopolitan under the alias Billy.
[0:21] Speaker 2: How much money do you think you lost? Probably... Damn.
[0:24] Speaker 2: You know, I had a lot of talent, a lot
[0:27] Speaker 2: of ability. I just didn't work on it the way
[0:29] Speaker 2: that I needed to to really take it to that
[0:31] Speaker 2: next level, you know? And to be honest, man, I
[0:33] Speaker 2: hated Cleveland.
[0:34] Speaker 3: Whoa!
[0:35] Speaker 2: I gotta ask you about draft day, bro.
[0:37] Speaker 3: You might be the only person that has, like, a
[0:39] Speaker 3: Drake song really based on it.
[0:40] Speaker 2: He called me in the middle of the night, listening
[0:42] Speaker 2: to him play it on my Colt.
[0:43] Speaker 1: That's crazy.
[0:45] Speaker 2: You know, there's still times where I'm super depressed.
[0:48] Speaker 1: You pulled the trigger of this gun, and it didn't fire.
[0:51] Speaker 1: Do you feel like that was God?
[1:02] Speaker 3: Boys, stop it. Johnny, Johnny, don't entertain this kid, bro.
[1:07] Speaker 3: Cause he'll, he'll, he'll just keep pushing.
[1:09] Speaker 1: Who drank all the rapid rehydration sticks?
[1:11] Speaker 2: I'm dying. Dude, how do you do it? How do
[1:13] Speaker 2: you party so hard? Did you guys go outside or something?
[1:15] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, we did. We did.
[1:16] Speaker 3: We had a long, Johnny, he does, he does once
[1:19] Speaker 3: a quarter. Lean back, put your headphones on. Get your
[1:21] Speaker 3: head in the game. This is a big show. We've
[1:23] Speaker 3: been trying to do this show for four years. Now
[1:25] Speaker 3: I will say, I will, I will say, yes, this
[1:29] Speaker 3: is for Johnny. I will say it's, This is the
[1:33] Speaker 3: first time I didn't go out the night before. Correct.
[1:35] Speaker 3: I was going to say, we've had some trouble getting
[1:37] Speaker 3: Johnny on the show. This is a new Johnny Manziel.
[1:41] Speaker 3: His head is in the game. He's ready for action.
[1:43] Speaker 3: He's been shooting content, and here he is.
[1:44] Speaker 2: That's what happens when you do podcast episodes in Miami,
[1:48] Speaker 2: I guess. Bro. That was our fault.
[1:50] Speaker 1: That was our fault.
[1:52] Speaker 2: For doing it there.
[1:54] Speaker 1: I don't know what we expected.
[1:55] Speaker 2: But dude, you're here now.
[1:57] Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us. Ladies and gentlemen, it's Johnny Manziel.
[2:01] Speaker 2: Johnny Foosball.
[2:03] Speaker 1: Johnny Football.
[2:04] Speaker 2: You still like that name? Yeah, it's all right. I mean,
[2:06] Speaker 2: it's following me for the rest of my life probably,
[2:08] Speaker 2: so fuck it.
[2:09] Speaker 1: For sure. You monetize it?
[2:11] Speaker 2: A little bit, yeah.
[2:12] Speaker 1: You should get on it. It's sick.
[2:13] Speaker 2: Well, hold on, dude. There's a whole story there.
[2:16] Speaker 1: Do you monetize it still?
[2:17] Speaker 2: A little bit. Probably not as much as I did
[2:20] Speaker 2: at one point.
[2:20] Speaker 1: No, you should.
[2:22] Speaker 2: What was the deal there?
[2:24] Speaker 3: So basically you coined that name and the NCAA didn't
[2:28] Speaker 3: want you using it for marketing, correct?
[2:30] Speaker 2: Correct. You can't use... At that point in time, you
[2:32] Speaker 2: couldn't use anything for marketing. Right. Name, image, likeness, nothing
[2:37] Speaker 2: back then. But now we're in a different day and age, so...
[2:40] Speaker 2: Seems a little predatory, no?
[2:41] Speaker 1: I've always felt that it was predatory.
[2:43] Speaker 2: I think my story and kind of what happened with
[2:46] Speaker 2: me coming up in college definitely led us to where
[2:49] Speaker 2: we are now with the NCAA rules and stuff. So,
[2:51] Speaker 2: I mean... you look back on it and you can
[2:54] Speaker 2: be pissed about it or whatever, but I still got
[2:56] Speaker 2: to make a little bit of money in college. And
[2:58] Speaker 2: now guys are definitely eating off of it.
[2:59] Speaker 3: How, how much money did you, do you think you
[3:02] Speaker 3: lost it? If you had come up during the NIL days,
[3:05] Speaker 3: how much money.
[3:06] Speaker 2: Would you, you're looking at guys now who are asked,
[3:08] Speaker 2: getting offered to transfer and go places. It's eight, nine,
[3:11] Speaker 2: $ 10 million. They're getting offered to do that. So, I mean,
[3:14] Speaker 2: I feel like it's probably, you know, seven, eight figures.
[3:17] Speaker 2: Eight figures, for sure.
[3:18] Speaker 3: But they don't have the same brand that you... I mean, dude,
[3:21] Speaker 3: you had the most identifiable brand in college football.
[3:24] Speaker 2: I think merch and even shit you could have done
[3:25] Speaker 2: back then is a $ 2, $ 3, $ 4 million a year
[3:29] Speaker 2: thing in its own. Wrong place, wrong time, Johnny. I
[3:31] Speaker 2: was just a little early. Just premature.
[3:32] Speaker 1: Do you think that would have changed the outcome of
[3:35] Speaker 1: your life?
[3:36] Speaker 2: I think I would have stayed in college. I think
[3:38] Speaker 2: I would have taken a pay cut to go to
[3:39] Speaker 2: the NFL. Do you think you still would have... potentially
[3:46] Speaker 2: fallen into the dark path that you did oh 100
[3:50] Speaker 2: you just would have more money i would have just
[3:52] Speaker 2: had more money to miss more practice and to travel
[3:55] Speaker 2: around the world fucking around.
[3:57] Speaker 3: Bro it's really hard to even pick a direction for
[3:59] Speaker 3: the show because there's football there's partying there's celebrity i
[4:02] Speaker 3: mean i guess like right off the rip i could ask.
[4:04] Speaker 2: You like do you regret anything you know i think
[4:09] Speaker 2: back about it I guess there is regrets because I
[4:14] Speaker 2: sit here today and I didn't get to reach the
[4:16] Speaker 2: full maximum potential of what I was as a football player.
[4:20] Speaker 2: I look back, it happened so quick and as fast
[4:24] Speaker 2: as the rise happened, the downfall was equally as quick.
[4:27] Speaker 2: But there was also a certain point in me just
[4:29] Speaker 2: because I think of everything that I went through from
[4:32] Speaker 2: the rise through the fame, through the media scrutiny, through
[4:34] Speaker 2: everything that I just felt like I wasn't enjoying playing
[4:37] Speaker 2: football anymore. So at that point in time, the way
[4:40] Speaker 2: that I felt in 2016, I wasn't, I wasn't enjoying
[4:43] Speaker 2: playing football. When I got cut in Cleveland, I wasn't
[4:45] Speaker 2: eager to go try and sign with a new team
[4:48] Speaker 2: or get back into the swing of things. I was
[4:50] Speaker 2: like completely, you know, exhausted with it. And I was
[4:53] Speaker 2: ready for a break from it.
[4:54] Speaker 1: When you lose that spark, it can be really hard
[4:57] Speaker 1: to continue doing something.
[4:58] Speaker 2: Yeah. For, I mean, for sure. I didn't feel the
[5:00] Speaker 2: same way going out onto a practice field or like
[5:03] Speaker 2: having that joy and excitement as I did on Saturdays.
[5:06] Speaker 2: I Maybe it was where I was, maybe it was
[5:11] Speaker 2: my situation, but I feel like I just didn't have
[5:16] Speaker 2: the same spark and it's tough to continue to go
[5:18] Speaker 2: through that. And whenever I did get cut, I was
[5:20] Speaker 2: almost more excited about it than anything, than heartbroken or
[5:23] Speaker 2: torn up about it.
[5:24] Speaker 3: What was the moment you feel like, or you felt
[5:27] Speaker 3: like the spark and the light went out? Like was
[5:30] Speaker 3: it was there like a specific moment in time where
[5:33] Speaker 3: you're just like, fuck this, dude, I want to do
[5:34] Speaker 3: this no more?
[5:35] Speaker 2: No, I feel like everything just happened so quick from
[5:37] Speaker 2: the time of deciding I was going to go to
[5:39] Speaker 2: the NFL through the training process to the draft. It
[5:41] Speaker 2: was just like one thing after another. And just with
[5:44] Speaker 2: how much stuff you get into you know, business-wise and
[5:47] Speaker 2: everything else in between that. I almost never felt like
[5:49] Speaker 2: I really got a break. Not that I, you know,
[5:52] Speaker 2: should have got one with what everybody else was going
[5:54] Speaker 2: through and stuff, but I never felt like I got
[5:56] Speaker 2: a chance to turn it off for a minute and
[5:58] Speaker 2: it just consumed me. And then when I got into
[6:01] Speaker 2: the NFL, you're not going out and performing the way
[6:04] Speaker 2: that you're used to in practice and you're struggling a
[6:06] Speaker 2: little bit. I think your confidence is affected more than
[6:09] Speaker 2: anything else.
[6:10] Speaker 1: So, dude, I'm from Cleveland. I was a junior in
[6:13] Speaker 1: high school when you won the Heisman Trophy. And man, bro,
[6:17] Speaker 1: we loved you. I still love you, bro. You're that guy.
[6:19] Speaker 1: You're Johnny Football. And then you came to the Browns.
[6:21] Speaker 1: We were stoked about that. We were stoked to have you, man.
[6:26] Speaker 1: But how did you balance that lifestyle of work and
[6:31] Speaker 1: play for so long? effectively at the highest level.
[6:35] Speaker 2: Did he bounce it effectively? I think you did. No,
[6:38] Speaker 2: I think you did. Cause you said, you've said that.
[6:40] Speaker 2: I think I did in college. Like I think I
[6:42] Speaker 2: did in college. And then when I got to Cleveland,
[6:44] Speaker 2: I don't think I did. I never put in the
[6:47] Speaker 2: same amount of work when I was in Cleveland as
[6:49] Speaker 2: I did throughout those first couple of years as I
[6:51] Speaker 2: was in college at Texas A & M. I just,
[6:54] Speaker 2: you know, I felt like I was just almost just,
[6:58] Speaker 2: I enjoyed the partying more than I did, you know,
[7:00] Speaker 2: the Sundays.
[7:01] Speaker 1: What's your favorite part about the partying?
[7:04] Speaker 2: I think you just get a rush from it. I
[7:05] Speaker 2: think at that point in time at 22, going into
[7:07] Speaker 2: new places, new cities, meeting new people, you know, you know,
[7:11] Speaker 2: everything about it. I think there was a, there was
[7:13] Speaker 2: a rush, you know, you come to, fucking new york
[7:16] Speaker 2: city you meet john schwartz for the first time and
[7:18] Speaker 2: your doors get open to.
[7:19] Speaker 4: Fucking shout out john schwartz your fucking doors we're gonna
[7:23] Speaker 4: be with him in about two hours whole new lifestyle
[7:26] Speaker 4: you're like fuck maybe this is maybe this oh it's
[7:28] Speaker 4: hot bro listen i see the comments on on the
[7:31] Speaker 4: post like he threw it all away and i want
[7:33] Speaker 4: to ask you about that like they simplify it so
[7:35] Speaker 4: much he threw it all away but like until you're
[7:37] Speaker 4: in that position and and listen a lot.
[7:40] Speaker 3: Of people come in and and don't take the bait
[7:43] Speaker 3: right and they don't go for the cheese in the
[7:45] Speaker 3: in the mousetrap right but until you're in the position
[7:47] Speaker 3: to like have that type of access and be around
[7:50] Speaker 3: those type of people and be in the rooms that
[7:52] Speaker 3: you were in with with drake and and and and
[7:55] Speaker 3: you know partying at that level sure addiction plays into it,
[7:59] Speaker 3: but it's hard, bro. It's really, it's really hard to, to,
[8:02] Speaker 3: to say no to a life that you never imagined
[8:04] Speaker 3: you would have access to, you know what I'm saying?
[8:06] Speaker 3: And to, and to, and to have fun and do
[8:08] Speaker 3: those types of things at that level, it would, it
[8:10] Speaker 3: would take down a, a many, a strong men and
[8:13] Speaker 3: has bro, you know what I'm saying? So I guess
[8:15] Speaker 3: when I, I guess when I see those comments on your,
[8:17] Speaker 3: on your stuff, or like when I hear people talk
[8:18] Speaker 3: about it, he threw it all away. Do you, does
[8:20] Speaker 3: that bother you when people simplify the situation so much?
[8:23] Speaker 2: Um, Yeah, maybe a little bit. I don't read into
[8:27] Speaker 2: a lot of what other people say. At the end
[8:29] Speaker 2: of the day, it's your life that you live yourself.
[8:31] Speaker 2: And I sit there and have to deal with the
[8:33] Speaker 2: reality of what my football career was. I think the
[8:36] Speaker 2: thing that I think about most now is just that
[8:40] Speaker 2: I wish it was longer. And I think for me,
[8:41] Speaker 2: I had been able to, for two years, be really
[8:45] Speaker 2: successful with living a lifestyle that way, with going out
[8:49] Speaker 2: three or four nights a week in college and having
[8:52] Speaker 2: that kind of lifestyle. And then as you get to
[8:54] Speaker 2: the next level in the NFL, I didn't start until
[8:58] Speaker 2: probably 12 or 13 weeks into my rookie season. Until
[9:03] Speaker 2: that first game where I still had all the confidence
[9:06] Speaker 2: in the world going into week 13 or 14 that
[9:08] Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, I'm finally getting a chance to play
[9:10] Speaker 2: and start. even though I haven't been living right and
[9:12] Speaker 2: doing the right things, I'm still going to go out
[9:14] Speaker 2: here and be able to play well at a high
[9:15] Speaker 2: level and be able to figure it out because I
[9:18] Speaker 2: always have. And then we play the bingles and we
[9:21] Speaker 2: don't score a point. We get beat 30 to nothing.
[9:23] Speaker 2: And then you have a whole fucking, you know, city
[9:26] Speaker 2: of Cleveland that's been behind you waiting for this opportunity,
[9:29] Speaker 2: waiting for this moment for you to get a chance
[9:31] Speaker 2: on the field and you go and lay an egg
[9:33] Speaker 2: and you get back to your house at the end
[9:34] Speaker 2: of that day. And it's kind of like, Oh fuck,
[9:35] Speaker 2: that did not go the way that I expected at all.
[9:38] Speaker 2: And for the first time, you know, I had to
[9:40] Speaker 2: deal with some real repercussions of, of not doing the
[9:43] Speaker 2: shit that I was supposed to do.
[9:44] Speaker 3: There's no comparison whatsoever. Cause you're actually like physically going
[9:47] Speaker 3: out on a football field. But like for us, I
[9:49] Speaker 3: would liken it to like, if we're going to go
[9:51] Speaker 3: sit down with milk, you know what I'm saying? Or
[9:53] Speaker 3: like somebody like that, we can go to shame or go,
[9:56] Speaker 3: we can go to socialist after 4 00 AM show up, sit,
[9:59] Speaker 3: have a good show and banter.
[10:01] Speaker 2: But the night before we did Trump, we were hunkered down, bro.
[10:05] Speaker 2: We were in lockdown. You know what I'm saying?
[10:07] Speaker 3: We locked in, we studied, we, we, so I guess
[10:10] Speaker 3: like for you, do you feel like you were never
[10:11] Speaker 3: able to like moderate and pick the day as well?
[10:14] Speaker 3: And like, kind of like really like, would you say
[10:16] Speaker 3: it was more addiction than, than, than loss for life?
[10:21] Speaker 2: I think it was just living the same life. I
[10:24] Speaker 2: thought that lifestyle was what it was. I thought I
[10:26] Speaker 2: was one of these outliers that could party as a
[10:29] Speaker 2: preparation for a fucking physically athletic thing that you were
[10:33] Speaker 2: supposed to do.
[10:34] Speaker 1: You were living the lifestyle of a rock star, but
[10:37] Speaker 1: you were playing football.
[10:39] Speaker 2: For two years in college, I went out and performed
[10:42] Speaker 2: at the highest level. At that point in time, I
[10:45] Speaker 2: go back now and watch my second year in college.
[10:48] Speaker 2: You know, I'm sitting there, I'm smoking an ounce of
[10:50] Speaker 2: weed every single week. I'm going to the bars, it's
[10:52] Speaker 2: t-shirt Tuesday, whatever Wednesday. That's crazy.
[10:55] Speaker 3: Because in my mind, bro, when I think about, bro,
[10:58] Speaker 3: when I think about college, like when you, cause I didn't.
[11:01] Speaker 2: Go to college, I smoked crack instead.
[11:03] Speaker 3: But when, but when I think about like the college experience,
[11:06] Speaker 3: like the most elite college experience, he probably has the
[11:10] Speaker 3: most number one hands down without a single person that
[11:13] Speaker 3: could ever even raise a hand to compete with the
[11:15] Speaker 3: elite college experience in history.
[11:17] Speaker 2: In the history of the world, or at least the
[11:19] Speaker 2: United States. No, no, no, no, no, no. Gronk, I get.
[11:23] Speaker 3: The comparison, but dude, Johnny football, you got to talk
[11:27] Speaker 3: about that feeling when you first started becoming like the
[11:29] Speaker 3: most talked about name in college sports. And like a
[11:33] Speaker 3: moment when you were at a party and you felt
[11:35] Speaker 3: that first like rush, like, oh, I'm him, bro.
[11:37] Speaker 2: Like for real. Like probably right after winning the Heisman,
[11:41] Speaker 2: you know, I had been the biggest Drake fan ever.
[11:43] Speaker 2: And to have him like have his team, like reach
[11:45] Speaker 2: out and be like, yo, come to Toronto anytime you want.
[11:48] Speaker 2: I was like, I'm on my fucking computer that next day.
[11:51] Speaker 2: It didn't matter class or practice or nothing. Like the
[11:54] Speaker 2: second I got to go do that, I was fucking gone.
[11:56] Speaker 2: I'm sitting in the back of a fucking Rolls Royce
[11:59] Speaker 2: smoking a joint with Drake at 18 years old. And
[12:02] Speaker 2: I'm like, this is what it's about. My mom's calling
[12:04] Speaker 2: me like, where are you? I'm like, I'm in a
[12:06] Speaker 2: completely different country in the middle of the week, fucking gone.
[12:09] Speaker 2: And then that lifestyle just kind of took over. You know,
[12:12] Speaker 2: you go on tour that next year, I'm hitting every
[12:14] Speaker 2: show in Texas. And then I'm just doing this different
[12:17] Speaker 2: people going to sporting events like living that lifestyle that
[12:20] Speaker 2: you know that you want to live whenever you're in
[12:23] Speaker 2: college and for a while like you know i go
[12:25] Speaker 2: into my second year and you know i look back
[12:29] Speaker 2: at it now and i'm like man i'm so much
[12:31] Speaker 2: i look at year one highlights and then go look
[12:33] Speaker 2: at year two i'm like even though my numbers were
[12:36] Speaker 2: better i'm supposed to be a first round pick everything
[12:38] Speaker 2: on paper like looks like it's better and i'm better
[12:41] Speaker 2: than i was the year before I was so much slower,
[12:44] Speaker 2: so much more like just delayed with everything that you
[12:47] Speaker 2: watch from like a quarterback standpoint. So like it almost,
[12:50] Speaker 2: it was almost like I had everyone fooled that like
[12:53] Speaker 2: everything was going in the right direction. My numbers were
[12:55] Speaker 2: better through for more touchdowns, all this shit. But if
[12:57] Speaker 2: I look back at it, like objectively now I'm like,
[13:00] Speaker 2: everything had just like spiraled over and that hard work
[13:04] Speaker 2: and everything you need to do to be a top
[13:06] Speaker 2: level athlete. It just, it wasn't there.
[13:09] Speaker 1: Let me ask you something. Did you know at that time,
[13:13] Speaker 1: deep down that you were fooling people?
[13:16] Speaker 2: Fuck no. At that point in time, I think I
[13:18] Speaker 2: was fooling myself. Like I was still going out on
[13:20] Speaker 2: Saturday and throwing for five touchdowns. We were winning games.
[13:23] Speaker 2: We were competitive in games. We were good. Um, you know,
[13:27] Speaker 2: for me being a six foot quarterback, you know, a
[13:31] Speaker 2: guy who felt was lucky to win the job the
[13:33] Speaker 2: year before, I never thought in a million years I
[13:35] Speaker 2: would be able to go to the NFL and two years,
[13:37] Speaker 2: you know, I left two years of eligibility on the table.
[13:41] Speaker 2: You know, I'd still had two years to be able
[13:42] Speaker 2: to come back and play college football, but just with
[13:45] Speaker 2: what I was doing off the field, you know, barely
[13:49] Speaker 2: fucking going to class, doing all this shit. I didn't
[13:52] Speaker 2: really leave myself much of an option to be able
[13:54] Speaker 2: to go back and even come back for my junior year.
[13:57] Speaker 2: It like, wasn't really an option.
[13:58] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[13:59] Speaker 3: Was, what was the moment for you that, uh, that
[14:02] Speaker 3: you were like, I'm in, I'm in deep shit. Like,
[14:06] Speaker 3: like even prior to the NFL, like, was there a
[14:08] Speaker 3: moment where, cause dude, you had some, you had some
[14:10] Speaker 3: pretty high profile, like legal battles, put it like that.
[14:15] Speaker 3: Some pretty high profile scandals. Like, was there a moment
[14:19] Speaker 3: for you where you were just like, fuck, I'm like
[14:20] Speaker 3: really in over my head.
[14:22] Speaker 2: Maybe with the NCAA stuff a little bit, like, you know,
[14:25] Speaker 2: after my first year, you know, I was traveling around
[14:28] Speaker 2: doing all this shit. Like it was getting really hard
[14:30] Speaker 2: back then to be like, how are you sitting in
[14:32] Speaker 2: $ 20, 000 seats at a Mavericks or a Rockets game when
[14:37] Speaker 2: you're in fucking college and you're not supposed to be
[14:40] Speaker 2: taking any benefits or anything? But after the NCAA stuff
[14:44] Speaker 2: happened and they decided to suspend me for half a game,
[14:47] Speaker 2: it was one of those things like, okay, I got
[14:49] Speaker 2: away with it. You're not getting a lot of repercussions
[14:51] Speaker 2: from a half a game suspension against the team. We
[14:54] Speaker 2: were going to beat by 50 points. I didn't really
[14:56] Speaker 2: feel like You know, the weight of everything was like
[14:59] Speaker 2: cracking down on me until after like my first year
[15:03] Speaker 2: in Cleveland. And that was really like just personal, just
[15:07] Speaker 2: like disappointment from being like so eager to get to
[15:11] Speaker 2: this point in your life where you have a dream reach.
[15:14] Speaker 2: This is the start of your career. And then it
[15:15] Speaker 2: just goes the way it did. I think it really
[15:17] Speaker 2: made me kind of, you know, have to figure some
[15:20] Speaker 2: things out.
[15:21] Speaker 3: Dude, we read one of the stories on here and
[15:24] Speaker 3: we were laughing on the way over here. The night
[15:27] Speaker 3: before the Browns' final game in 2015. Can we talk
[15:30] Speaker 3: about this? You were allegedly, allegedly spotted in Las Vegas
[15:34] Speaker 3: wearing a blonde wig, a fake mustache, sunglasses, and a hoodie,
[15:37] Speaker 3: checking into the Cosmopolitan under the alias Billy. Used a
[15:43] Speaker 3: fake name at the hotel tab and was seen gambling
[15:45] Speaker 3: and drinking while listed as in concussion protocol.
[15:48] Speaker 2: Is that an accurate statement? Some of it is, for sure.
[15:54] Speaker 2: 2015 was a tough year for the Cleveland Browns. I
[15:56] Speaker 2: think we were.
[15:58] Speaker 2: Two and 13 going into, uh, into that week 17 game,
[16:03] Speaker 2: I was in concussion protocol. Um, I think that like
[16:07] Speaker 2: Wednesday or Thursday, I decided to hop on probably the
[16:10] Speaker 2: only flight from Cleveland to Vegas. I went, I think
[16:14] Speaker 2: I was at like, I was at some hotel. I'm
[16:17] Speaker 2: not usually at like somewhere in like the middle of
[16:19] Speaker 2: the strip, maybe like Caesars or something. And I sat
[16:21] Speaker 2: down at a blackjack table and had a hat like
[16:24] Speaker 2: way down, And then didn't even make it maybe five
[16:27] Speaker 2: or 10 minutes. And somebody recognized me and I was like, fuck. Um,
[16:32] Speaker 2: so I went to a place off the strip, um,
[16:35] Speaker 2: and I got a full wig, like full mustache. There's
[16:40] Speaker 2: a place for that. Full glasses, the whole deal. Um,
[16:44] Speaker 2: went to a Hawks on dinner that night when everything
[16:47] Speaker 2: was going well, I was really flying under the radar. And, uh,
[16:51] Speaker 2: you know, even went to Hawks on that night, had
[16:52] Speaker 2: a great time, went to the club. I paid with
[16:55] Speaker 2: my credit card though. And that was what really kind
[16:57] Speaker 2: of put a paper trail, put a paper trail down.
[17:01] Speaker 2: But initially I think that first person that like spotted
[17:04] Speaker 2: me at that blackjack table, like sent a tweet out,
[17:07] Speaker 2: kind of started to go a little viral. I, that night,
[17:10] Speaker 2: I think like posted a picture with my dog and
[17:14] Speaker 2: with a geo tag in Cleveland to try and throw
[17:16] Speaker 2: everybody off the set. And, you know, at the time,
[17:20] Speaker 2: you know, I wasn't flying private or didn't like have
[17:23] Speaker 2: You know, looking back now, I'm like, just get the
[17:25] Speaker 2: fucking private plane, get out of there, get back to Cleveland.
[17:29] Speaker 2: No problem. You can get away with it. But at
[17:30] Speaker 2: that point in time, I was probably flying fucking Southwest and,
[17:36] Speaker 2: you know, went out that night, got back to the room,
[17:39] Speaker 2: maybe like four or five in the morning. I just
[17:40] Speaker 2: took my phone, turned it off and like threw it
[17:42] Speaker 2: in the drawer next to the bed. And I was like, whatever,
[17:44] Speaker 2: I'm going to ride, ride this weekend out.
[17:47] Speaker 3: So, OK, because I want to ask you a question
[17:49] Speaker 3: about that and like tail it into something else. But
[17:51] Speaker 3: so coming off of that night, when you wake up
[17:54] Speaker 3: the next morning.
[17:55] Speaker 2: Right.
[17:55] Speaker 3: And I want I want you to apply this to
[17:57] Speaker 3: a lot of mornings you would wake up. What is
[18:00] Speaker 3: what is your because I have my own.
[18:02] Speaker 2: He's got his own.
[18:03] Speaker 3: What is your like survival mode look like when you
[18:06] Speaker 3: wake up after two hours of sleep? You were at
[18:08] Speaker 3: the club, you went to afters at Dre's till 6 a.m.
[18:11] Speaker 3: You were at the win, you know, till 8 a.m., whatever, right?
[18:14] Speaker 3: What does it look like when you wake up and
[18:17] Speaker 3: what do you do first?
[18:18] Speaker 2: At that point in time, I think I would have
[18:19] Speaker 2: probably just woke up and been like, damn, I've already
[18:21] Speaker 2: like pushed this to the max. I'm already going to
[18:23] Speaker 2: be in deep shit. So let's like get a wire scent,
[18:26] Speaker 2: go to High Limit and have some breakfast and start
[18:28] Speaker 2: drinking again. Like just push through it. Like there's not
[18:32] Speaker 2: a flight out until God knows when do I even
[18:35] Speaker 2: need to be? Am I even on the team? Like
[18:37] Speaker 2: at this point, have I already been like written off
[18:39] Speaker 2: or cut or whatever? So I think I just went
[18:41] Speaker 2: and just probably got some more money sent in.
[18:44] Speaker 3: That seems like the, like for me, when I wake
[18:47] Speaker 3: up after like no sleep and I've been out, Like
[18:48] Speaker 3: I go the opposite direction. Like I want to try
[18:50] Speaker 3: to get to the gym, hit the sauna, have some water.
[18:53] Speaker 3: You always have been the opposite, dude. Cause you always,
[18:56] Speaker 3: you would text me after we'd go out and you'd
[18:57] Speaker 3: be like, yo, I'm going to be dusting right now.
[19:00] Speaker 3: It's like 11 a.m. I'm like, bro, you need to.
[19:02] Speaker 2: Sleep, bro. I'm definitely not that way anymore. But at
[19:05] Speaker 2: that point in time, like in those circumstances, I for
[19:08] Speaker 2: sure would have doubled down and just kept it rolling.
[19:10] Speaker 3: If you could go back right now and poindexter your
[19:14] Speaker 3: way through your.
[19:15] Speaker 2: Whole college career, nose in the books.
[19:19] Speaker 3: Play the game, go to the NFL, play at the
[19:21] Speaker 3: level that you were born to play at, give up,
[19:24] Speaker 3: draft day, Johnny Manziel, which I want to talk about
[19:26] Speaker 3: the song in a minute, give it all up and
[19:29] Speaker 3: be straight up Poindexter, Johnny Football, would you do it?
[19:32] Speaker 2: Yeah, I would. I mean, I think as much like
[19:35] Speaker 2: legend and like lore that I get from like the
[19:38] Speaker 2: things that I did and the way that I live
[19:39] Speaker 2: my life, like as much as I do at some
[19:41] Speaker 2: points have like no regret, I still do have that
[19:44] Speaker 2: like point in time where it did like completely shift
[19:47] Speaker 2: for me and I like went to like a different
[19:49] Speaker 2: direction and like a different path like that first year
[19:51] Speaker 2: that I was like partying in college and playing well
[19:54] Speaker 2: and ended up winning the Heisman like that almost gave
[19:56] Speaker 2: me like a superpower type of like feeling when in
[19:59] Speaker 2: reality it was all just I mean not sustainable like
[20:03] Speaker 2: you know to go back to a moment like we
[20:06] Speaker 2: win the Cotton Bowl And after my Heisman year, it's
[20:10] Speaker 2: kind of end our season, you know, 12 and two,
[20:13] Speaker 2: our best season in school history in a while. And
[20:15] Speaker 2: like the first thing that I was doing was like
[20:18] Speaker 2: going out, go to a club. And that was like
[20:20] Speaker 2: the first time that I really got like pictured, photographed.
[20:23] Speaker 2: And after there, it just kind of like took off
[20:25] Speaker 2: and the party and took a life of its own.
[20:27] Speaker 2: So if I had like a point in time to
[20:28] Speaker 2: go back and like really that I pinpoint on that,
[20:31] Speaker 2: I wish I could change things like I never looked
[20:33] Speaker 2: at it as like, man, I've done such amazing things
[20:36] Speaker 2: as a freshman in college, things that have never been
[20:38] Speaker 2: done in the history of college football. Let's take this
[20:41] Speaker 2: to a next level and maybe try and come back
[20:42] Speaker 2: and win a national championship or a Heisman again the
[20:45] Speaker 2: next year. That grind to go and do that was
[20:50] Speaker 2: never really there. It was always like, damn, more fun,
[20:52] Speaker 2: more this. Who are we going to meet? This lifestyle
[20:55] Speaker 2: was just more enticing than the buckle down and do
[20:59] Speaker 2: shit the right way.
[21:02] Speaker 1: How do you take what you've learned and the experience
[21:06] Speaker 1: that you've had in your life and teach it. Or like,
[21:10] Speaker 1: if you ever wanted to have kids, if they were
[21:13] Speaker 1: in a similar, uh, path that you were, have you
[21:18] Speaker 1: ever thought about how you would get them to maybe
[21:20] Speaker 1: not make the same mistakes? So they wouldn't have regrets
[21:24] Speaker 1: that you maybe have.
[21:25] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[21:25] Speaker 2: I think, you know, I'm one of those like perfect,
[21:28] Speaker 2: perfect examples, like learn from the shit that I did.
[21:31] Speaker 2: I put it all out on a blueprint of like
[21:33] Speaker 2: what not to do. like I sit and go back
[21:36] Speaker 2: to Texas A & M and I'll have like guys
[21:38] Speaker 2: that go, we're going out with you tonight or this
[21:40] Speaker 2: or that. And I very like blatantly and bluntly, like
[21:44] Speaker 2: tell them, like, just make sure you're doing the shit
[21:46] Speaker 2: you need to do. Like this lifestyle is great, but
[21:49] Speaker 2: if your goals are to go to the NFL and
[21:52] Speaker 2: do this and do that, there's guys that you look
[21:54] Speaker 2: at who you should emulate. Like, The way Kobe lived
[21:58] Speaker 2: his fucking life and the way that he attacked trying
[22:00] Speaker 2: to be the greatest fucking basketball player ever. That's how
[22:04] Speaker 2: you should attack your career, your life. If that's really
[22:07] Speaker 2: what your goals are and what you're trying to do,
[22:09] Speaker 2: this other shit will always be there. Like the partying
[22:12] Speaker 2: and everything else would have been there for me at 35.
[22:14] Speaker 2: It would have been there for me down the road
[22:17] Speaker 2: at any point in time. You know, I just want
[22:19] Speaker 2: to do it all within the fucking two or three years. Bam.
[22:22] Speaker 1: I feel like you're one of those people that probably
[22:23] Speaker 1: has to touch the stove though. Always, you know, and, It's,
[22:27] Speaker 1: it's hard to tell someone with that mentality, like, Hey,
[22:31] Speaker 1: here's what, here's what you should do. Here's my advice.
[22:33] Speaker 1: Cause a lot of like, I've, I've received advice from
[22:35] Speaker 1: smart people and like most of the time I'm like,
[22:39] Speaker 1: I'm I'm good.
[22:40] Speaker 2: I'll figure it out. Right.
[22:42] Speaker 1: Um, so yeah, it's, it's interesting. I, uh, I watched the,
[22:46] Speaker 1: the untold documentary on, on Netflix. And I was really
[22:51] Speaker 1: excited to see that series with you in it. Cause
[22:54] Speaker 1: I think your story is crazy. Like, I think there's
[22:56] Speaker 1: two ways to look at your story. Like one is,
[22:58] Speaker 1: is like the comment section, like he threw it all away.
[23:00] Speaker 1: And the other is a guy who is a human
[23:04] Speaker 1: being who is just living his life and like being
[23:07] Speaker 1: fully himself.
[23:08] Speaker 5: And now.
[23:09] Speaker 1: Actually has a really significant story. You used the word lore.
[23:13] Speaker 1: It's lore, dude. You're Johnny Manziel and you have this
[23:15] Speaker 1: crazy story that a lot of people can learn from
[23:16] Speaker 1: and talk about, be even entertained by. We're talking about
[23:19] Speaker 1: it to this day. You've got the Netflix Untold documentary.
[23:22] Speaker 1: Were you nervous to finally put it all out there
[23:25] Speaker 1: in such an in-depth way?
[23:26] Speaker 2: No, I don't think so. I think I was more
[23:28] Speaker 2: just like, I still had so many people coming up
[23:31] Speaker 2: to me, even I'd been playing football for four or
[23:33] Speaker 2: five years and people still being like, asking about football
[23:36] Speaker 2: or this, you coming back or that. So I feel
[23:37] Speaker 2: like Untold was just a chance for me to like
[23:40] Speaker 2: tell my story, kind of close that chapter on like
[23:43] Speaker 2: what it was and just like also let people into like,
[23:47] Speaker 2: you know, we're in this NIL age of college football
[23:49] Speaker 2: and stuff. So to be able to tell that side
[23:51] Speaker 2: of like what really happened back then and like just
[23:54] Speaker 2: how crazy like the whole thing of it was, I
[23:57] Speaker 2: think people knew a little bit, but didn't know to
[23:59] Speaker 2: like the depths of like just how insane those fucking
[24:02] Speaker 2: couple of years were.
[24:03] Speaker 1: Were you happy with how it turned out?
[24:04] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[24:05] Speaker 2: I thought it was great. I loved, uh, I loved
[24:07] Speaker 2: the producer, the guy who did everything on it. I
[24:09] Speaker 2: thought it was, you know, I thought it was, I
[24:12] Speaker 2: thought it was great. You know, I thought it was
[24:13] Speaker 2: exactly what it probably needed to be.
[24:15] Speaker 1: I thought it was, I thought it was extremely well
[24:17] Speaker 1: done as well. They're, they're very good. That untold.
[24:19] Speaker 2: Yeah. I love that series. I remember watching, there's a
[24:21] Speaker 2: tennis player named Marty fish. And I remember seeing when
[24:23] Speaker 2: he did his own toll for the first time. I'm like,
[24:26] Speaker 2: I'm really fucked with this series. I really like it.
[24:28] Speaker 2: You know, a lot of people were like, you know,
[24:29] Speaker 2: maybe you should have done it one off by yourself
[24:31] Speaker 2: or this or that. But, you know, I thought it
[24:34] Speaker 2: was I thought it was kind of the way that
[24:36] Speaker 2: I wanted to do it at the right time to
[24:37] Speaker 2: do it.
[24:38] Speaker 1: They do a few of those like recurring series. There's Untold.
[24:42] Speaker 1: I don't know if you've seen American Manhunt. They just
[24:45] Speaker 1: did one. Osama bin Laden was great. fucking fascinating uh
[24:49] Speaker 1: train wreck is another one but netflix is they produce
[24:52] Speaker 1: such high quality content but there's a so does max
[24:55] Speaker 1: too so does max yeah max produces good luck on
[24:58] Speaker 1: that good luck on that second season man i'm just.
[25:01] Speaker 5: Saying like it's great bro it's a win-win world uh
[25:06] Speaker 5: i wanted to ask about a part in that in
[25:08] Speaker 5: that untold documentary that i i found like pretty shocking
[25:12] Speaker 5: and i i think you know you know what it
[25:14] Speaker 5: is but and i and i you like touched on
[25:16] Speaker 5: it And it was like really glanced over, but, uh,
[25:20] Speaker 5: and not to pry, but there was a part in
[25:22] Speaker 5: the documentary where you talked about taking your own life
[25:26] Speaker 5: and that you tried to actually do it.
[25:30] Speaker 2: Was that real? Oh, a hundred percent. You know, I
[25:33] Speaker 2: think after, after I got cut, you know, I went
[25:37] Speaker 2: straight to just like traveling around, you know, I had
[25:41] Speaker 2: all this money, I had, you know, freedom for the
[25:43] Speaker 2: first time to kind of be able to do whatever
[25:45] Speaker 2: I want. And I ended up in LA. And I
[25:47] Speaker 2: ended up at a house in Hollywood Hills bouncing around
[25:50] Speaker 2: and started to live that L.A. lifestyle that like you
[25:53] Speaker 2: guys know what the fuck that that can turn into.
[25:55] Speaker 2: You've all seen it. You've seen people go from, you know,
[25:58] Speaker 2: looking one way and then look a year later and
[26:00] Speaker 2: you're like, damn, you're a completely different person. You know,
[26:02] Speaker 2: I think, you know, for me and man, I still
[26:06] Speaker 2: to this day have, you know, stream up and down
[26:09] Speaker 2: of like mental struggles and mental battles. Like this isn't
[26:11] Speaker 2: something that like, you know, I spoke about it, obviously,
[26:14] Speaker 2: in the doc. but something that I still think comes
[26:19] Speaker 2: and goes at points in time in my life. Like,
[26:23] Speaker 2: you know, there's a way to look at my story
[26:25] Speaker 2: or a way to, you know, feel like I do
[26:28] Speaker 2: in my shoes at times where I'm like, man, I
[26:30] Speaker 2: was so gifted at something and never gave it a
[26:34] Speaker 2: chance to really get off the ground. You know, I
[26:36] Speaker 2: sit here every day and I'm recognized as that person,
[26:39] Speaker 2: but I'm so far away from that life and from,
[26:42] Speaker 2: you know, being that person, I feel like at times. So,
[26:45] Speaker 2: you know, there's still times where I'm super depressed, still
[26:49] Speaker 2: super down times. I'll leave my room for a month
[26:51] Speaker 2: at a time and then I'll crawl my way out
[26:53] Speaker 2: of it for a little bit. And then something will
[26:55] Speaker 2: happen in my life where, um, you know, I go
[26:59] Speaker 2: back into that. So I've very much been at a
[27:01] Speaker 2: point probably over the last four or five months where
[27:04] Speaker 2: I'm like having to really be on myself to get
[27:06] Speaker 2: out of that hole and probably been in like, you know,
[27:09] Speaker 2: a similar hole recently as I was at that point
[27:12] Speaker 2: in time in my life. And I think it's just, um,
[27:16] Speaker 2: You know, it's a hard thing to work through your
[27:19] Speaker 2: own personal shame and your own personal trauma and a
[27:22] Speaker 2: lot of things that you've impacted on yourself. Like I
[27:26] Speaker 2: sit back and can say, you know, what if I didn't,
[27:29] Speaker 2: what if I was this situation or these people are
[27:31] Speaker 2: out around me, but I'm at a point now where
[27:33] Speaker 2: I put a lot of the blame on myself. You know,
[27:36] Speaker 2: I am the one that caused a lot of my problems,
[27:38] Speaker 2: a lot of the things that went on in my life.
[27:41] Speaker 2: So it's just like, you know, learning to live with
[27:43] Speaker 2: that and to continue on and to whatever is next
[27:47] Speaker 2: in life for me. And I think that's something for
[27:49] Speaker 2: me that kind of gets me stuck at some points
[27:51] Speaker 2: in time where I'm like, what is, what is that
[27:55] Speaker 2: next thing? That's going to give me a spark in
[27:58] Speaker 2: any similar way that football did. And for me, I
[28:01] Speaker 2: haven't found that. Have you tried pickleball? No. Is that it?
[28:05] Speaker 1: Pickleball is pretty sick, dude.
[28:06] Speaker 2: I don't think it's going to be pickleball. I don't know.
[28:08] Speaker 1: Maybe give it a shot or collect cards or something.
[28:11] Speaker 3: He's doing, you're doing shows. And just to touch on
[28:13] Speaker 3: like the mental outside, like Johnny, you're like, we're in
[28:17] Speaker 3: the same circle. And when, when Johnny goes dark, it,
[28:21] Speaker 3: everybody gets upset about it. You know what I'm saying?
[28:23] Speaker 3: We haven't talked to him. We haven't seen him. I
[28:24] Speaker 3: hit up this person. I hit up this person. I
[28:25] Speaker 3: have to shoot you texts.
[28:26] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[28:26] Speaker 3: Your number, it'll go green. I'm like, Oh, numbers changed again.
[28:30] Speaker 3: I've got 15 Johnny Mansells on my phone. New, absolute newest, newest,
[28:35] Speaker 3: ultimate newest. So I know when that happens, you know
[28:38] Speaker 3: what I'm saying? And everybody's, you know, it's, it's, it's
[28:40] Speaker 3: a personal struggle. And the thing about it is like,
[28:42] Speaker 3: I can relate to it obviously. And like, It's very
[28:46] Speaker 3: hard for people to understand and to put themselves in
[28:48] Speaker 3: that position to truly understand the way another man's or
[28:52] Speaker 3: another human's mind works and why they make the decisions
[28:55] Speaker 3: they do and what parts of it are nature versus nurture,
[28:57] Speaker 3: what parts of it were genetically given to you, passed down.
[29:00] Speaker 3: And there's a lot of factors that create what you have,
[29:05] Speaker 3: which has really become this cautionary tale for other athletes.
[29:09] Speaker 3: You brought up kids, but I think for other athletes,
[29:13] Speaker 3: as someone who's, who's out, you know, they're a lot,
[29:16] Speaker 3: there's more Johnny Manziel's than there are Kobe's in the,
[29:19] Speaker 3: in the athletic world.
[29:20] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
[29:21] Speaker 3: I mean, there's a lot of these guys playing at
[29:23] Speaker 3: the ultimate elite level that are very close and, and
[29:27] Speaker 3: teetering that line in survival mode in the NBA, in
[29:30] Speaker 3: the NFL, in all, all sports, right.
[29:32] Speaker 2: And, and men and women. Right.
[29:34] Speaker 3: And so I think, I think your, your story becomes
[29:37] Speaker 3: a cautionary tale for, for people. And probably like, how
[29:39] Speaker 3: do you think it's affected like protocols at the college
[29:42] Speaker 3: and at collegiate and like pro level, have they put
[29:44] Speaker 3: in like a Johnny Manziel protocol for people?
[29:48] Speaker 2: You know, I think there's the college kids just with
[29:50] Speaker 2: the way, the way it is now and the way
[29:52] Speaker 2: these athletic departments are, they probably get a little bit
[29:54] Speaker 2: more help than we were getting back then. I think
[29:56] Speaker 2: mental health in itself has changed a lot over the
[29:59] Speaker 2: last 10, 12, like 14 years. I think, uh, people
[30:03] Speaker 2: are a lot more like social media was really new
[30:06] Speaker 2: back then. I think there's a lot more protocols in
[30:08] Speaker 2: place to be able to help. Like, you know, people
[30:11] Speaker 2: navigate social media, what it is online. Like, you know,
[30:15] Speaker 2: back then, like it was the wild fucking West and, and,
[30:19] Speaker 2: you know, being a kid in college to have millions
[30:21] Speaker 2: of followers and all this shit. Like it was, it
[30:24] Speaker 2: was a lot of power that came with it too.
[30:28] Speaker 1: I don't mean to degrade your mental health or anything
[30:34] Speaker 1: by saying, was that real? Because I think you opening
[30:37] Speaker 1: up about it and I fully believe that story. And
[30:42] Speaker 1: I think what you're doing is amazing because like I said,
[30:46] Speaker 1: a lot of people can learn from your life and
[30:48] Speaker 1: take whatever from it. I guess I was more so
[30:51] Speaker 1: talking about the specificity of what happened with.
[30:57] Speaker 1: You said on the show you pulled the trigger of
[31:00] Speaker 1: this gun and it didn't fire.
[31:02] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[31:02] Speaker 1: Which is fucking crazy. Do you feel like that was God?
[31:07] Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like obviously, you know, that's something whenever
[31:10] Speaker 2: you're in that situation, like as blurry as the time
[31:14] Speaker 2: is like it is. like you expect that to be
[31:16] Speaker 2: the end of it. You don't expect to fucking have
[31:19] Speaker 2: something like that go off a misfire or act of
[31:22] Speaker 2: fate or God or whatever it is. Like you truly
[31:25] Speaker 2: expect that when you pull that trigger, that like that
[31:27] Speaker 2: will be the end of it. So yeah, it's, it's
[31:29] Speaker 2: something that's out of my control out of, you know,
[31:33] Speaker 2: anybody's control. And it really is probably more so than anything.
[31:35] Speaker 2: As I look back now, like an act of God,
[31:38] Speaker 2: you know, I have more of a purpose to be
[31:40] Speaker 2: here and be in this earth.
[31:42] Speaker 1: That's crazy, man. Like that's, that's really fucking powerful to me.
[31:47] Speaker 2: Lil Wayne, Lil.
[31:48] Speaker 3: Wayne raps about that too. When he, he shot himself
[31:50] Speaker 3: in that song, let it all work out, which is
[31:52] Speaker 3: one of his best songs. It's a, it's, it's got,
[31:55] Speaker 3: it's a major moment. I mean, for a lot of people,
[31:57] Speaker 3: like those real, like rock bottom moments, whether it's like overdose,
[32:00] Speaker 3: an ICU visit, a felony arrest, whatever, where, or, or
[32:04] Speaker 3: even more so a pattern of surviving those types of things.
[32:07] Speaker 3: Like for me, it was a hundred things that should
[32:09] Speaker 3: have taken my life. And at some point you got
[32:11] Speaker 3: to tell it, like, you got to think to yourself, like,
[32:13] Speaker 3: who am I supposed to be helping? You know, like,
[32:16] Speaker 3: what is my purpose here? Who am I supposed to
[32:17] Speaker 3: be writing a book for or talking to on a podcast? Like, bro, you,
[32:22] Speaker 3: you know, people come up to you, I'm sure, and
[32:23] Speaker 3: are so appreciative of, of a man talking about the
[32:28] Speaker 3: mental health side and talking about stuff that, that they're
[32:31] Speaker 3: not used to hearing someone that they look up to
[32:33] Speaker 3: talk about. It's, it's extremely powerful. And I know you're
[32:35] Speaker 3: doing it now. I know, I've seen you, you're back,
[32:37] Speaker 3: you're doing shows. So you're feeling better. What did you
[32:40] Speaker 3: change recently to, to get back into a better state
[32:42] Speaker 3: of mind?
[32:43] Speaker 2: I think I just tried to like, keep myself like really,
[32:45] Speaker 2: really busy for the most part. Like, and just, you know,
[32:48] Speaker 2: one thing after another and just, you know, try and
[32:51] Speaker 2: keep my schedule busy, keep me around good people that like,
[32:53] Speaker 2: I feel like I know I need to be around friends. Like,
[32:56] Speaker 2: you know, it's, there's something to be said, like when
[33:00] Speaker 2: you get into those dark places and those dark mindset,
[33:02] Speaker 2: like it's such a battle to try and climb and
[33:05] Speaker 2: like crawl your way out of it. Like everything feels miserable.
[33:08] Speaker 2: Everything feels fucking terrible. There is no like silver lining
[33:12] Speaker 2: or positive way to spin or joy. It's nothing. It's
[33:16] Speaker 2: just a complete beat down of like negativity. So like,
[33:20] Speaker 2: You know, to do any single like little thing, whether
[33:22] Speaker 2: you want to do it or not. And it gives
[33:24] Speaker 2: you that one little like bit of hope and that
[33:26] Speaker 2: little bit of like clean dopamine, little like space through
[33:29] Speaker 2: the cloud. You just have to like kind of like
[33:31] Speaker 2: try and go through it and do the best you
[33:33] Speaker 2: can to just grab any little bit of that like
[33:35] Speaker 2: positivity that you can run with it.
[33:37] Speaker 3: What are your things right now? Like mine have always
[33:39] Speaker 3: just been exercise. You know what I'm saying? Like you said,
[33:42] Speaker 3: talking to the right people, but lately I've been trying
[33:44] Speaker 3: to intervene at the, on the cognitive triangle at the thought,
[33:48] Speaker 3: at the thinking level, I've been trying to like really
[33:50] Speaker 3: actively clean my.
[33:51] Speaker 2: Thoughts up every single day. Like, what are you doing
[33:53] Speaker 2: to like every single day to, to make yourself happier?
[33:57] Speaker 2: I feel like every single week, the thing that I'm like,
[33:59] Speaker 2: I'm trying to figure out myself a little bit more,
[34:01] Speaker 2: why I continue to like go down some of these
[34:03] Speaker 2: same things that are more like pattern-based, right? Like, every
[34:07] Speaker 2: year or two years, like no matter how good I
[34:09] Speaker 2: think I'm doing or how I feel after something, like
[34:12] Speaker 2: I'll still have kind of the same problem. So now
[34:14] Speaker 2: I feel like I'm just working with a therapist to
[34:16] Speaker 2: sit down and like really kind of dive into, you know,
[34:20] Speaker 2: some of these things that I feel like I get
[34:22] Speaker 2: over at times. Like there's times where I really like
[34:24] Speaker 2: am able to get over and look past my football
[34:28] Speaker 2: career failures, whatever it may be. And then there'll be
[34:31] Speaker 2: a point in time where it'll just like, fucking latch
[34:35] Speaker 2: on to me and like won't let go maybe it's
[34:37] Speaker 2: like during football season or something and i'm watching i'm
[34:39] Speaker 2: like fuck man like i still wish i was fucking
[34:41] Speaker 2: out there i wish i fucking played more but like
[34:43] Speaker 2: really just trying to to find my own personal way
[34:47] Speaker 2: with someone of like you know letting the past be
[34:50] Speaker 2: what it is it went the way how to move
[34:52] Speaker 2: really move forward and not let it like derail me.
[34:55] Speaker 1: Do you think that you could have been one of
[34:57] Speaker 1: the all-time greats Man.
[34:59] Speaker 2: I don't know about one of the all-time greats, but
[35:01] Speaker 2: I definitely could have been a person that played in
[35:03] Speaker 2: the NFL for eight to ten years, had a really
[35:06] Speaker 2: good career, got to a second contract, had success. I
[35:11] Speaker 2: had a lot of talent, a lot of ability that
[35:15] Speaker 2: I know was special. I just didn't work on it
[35:20] Speaker 2: the way that I needed to to really take it
[35:22] Speaker 2: to that next level. And to be honest, fuck, man,
[35:27] Speaker 2: I hated Cleveland. so much and i know that's gonna
[35:31] Speaker 2: be tough.
[35:32] Speaker 1: To hear unbelievable can.
[35:33] Speaker 2: You hear that that's fucking crazy.
[35:36] Speaker 3: Dude what a great city bro that's what a great.
[35:40] Speaker 1: Album it's dude all right.
[35:43] Speaker 6: Listen that place definitely aided to my fucking depression for
[35:46] Speaker 6: sure i respect how blunt you are about it where
[35:49] Speaker 6: would you have wanted to go in any city you
[35:53] Speaker 6: could have picked?
[35:53] Speaker 2: I don't know, man. It's a tough thing to look
[35:56] Speaker 2: back at and say. Anywhere but Cleveland, I guess. This
[35:59] Speaker 2: is crazy. What the fuck? Would you have picked the
[36:02] Speaker 2: Lions over... No way.
[36:04] Speaker 3: No fucking way.
[36:07] Speaker 2: No shot.
[36:09] Speaker 1: I've always wondered this. If you're a super high caliber athlete,
[36:13] Speaker 1: And you get drafted to like a city that you
[36:15] Speaker 1: just don't like.
[36:16] Speaker 2: It happens a lot.
[36:17] Speaker 1: And by the way, I feel like probably most of
[36:19] Speaker 1: them are.
[36:21] Speaker 2: A lot.
[36:21] Speaker 3: Well, because the highest picked athletes are usually going to
[36:26] Speaker 3: the lowest performing teams, which just so happen to be
[36:29] Speaker 3: a lot of times in those types of cities. Yeah.
[36:31] Speaker 1: Like if you're going to like Miami or like LA,
[36:34] Speaker 1: like that's got to be pretty fun and exciting as
[36:37] Speaker 1: an athlete. When you found out you were going to Cleveland,
[36:39] Speaker 1: was it just like, damn.
[36:41] Speaker 2: I think it originally, like, you know, I was like,
[36:43] Speaker 2: this is an amazing opportunity. Obviously, I got drafted in
[36:46] Speaker 2: the first round. Fucking amazing. You know, it took me
[36:50] Speaker 2: a while to kind of be there. And, like, even
[36:53] Speaker 2: the beginning, you know, I went downtown Cleveland. I'm like, okay,
[36:55] Speaker 2: we can work with this here. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They
[36:58] Speaker 2: got town hall. There was a casino right down the street.
[37:01] Speaker 2: I'm like, this is, like, doable. LeBron's coming back. We
[37:04] Speaker 2: got the fucking Cavs bumping. And then that, like... First,
[37:08] Speaker 2: like coming from Texas. And then that first like real
[37:11] Speaker 2: November fucking like brutal, like fucking winter was like, oh man,
[37:16] Speaker 2: what the fuck? You don't see sun. It was just like,
[37:19] Speaker 2: so fucking gray. I'm like, it was, uh, it was
[37:23] Speaker 2: tough sledding for me for sure. I, I, uh, realized
[37:27] Speaker 2: when I left Cleveland, how much the weather affected my mood.
[37:30] Speaker 1: Massive dude. It's insane. And when it gets dark in
[37:35] Speaker 1: Cleveland at 4 PM in the winter, And it's just
[37:37] Speaker 1: like cold.
[37:39] Speaker 2: And muted. And muted. That gray has no color. I
[37:43] Speaker 2: just remember having, I just called it the gray. It
[37:45] Speaker 2: was just like gray every day. It's the same on
[37:47] Speaker 2: the East Coast. It was better. I will say my
[37:50] Speaker 2: second year, I got a house in Avon, was on
[37:53] Speaker 2: a golf course, like got to the suburbs a little bit.
[37:56] Speaker 2: And I definitely did see like a better side of
[37:58] Speaker 2: Cleveland that made me enjoy it a lot more that
[38:01] Speaker 2: second year.
[38:01] Speaker 1: Yeah, Avon's nice.
[38:02] Speaker 2: He loves it. You love the golf course. The golf
[38:04] Speaker 2: was great. How's your game right now? I haven't touched
[38:08] Speaker 2: a golf course in months.
[38:09] Speaker 5: Why?
[38:10] Speaker 2: It just hasn't been on the list for me. Johnny,
[38:13] Speaker 2: that's your thing. It's something I need to get back
[38:15] Speaker 2: to for sure. You were playing like every day. I
[38:17] Speaker 2: thought you even were working with a brand. Yeah, when
[38:20] Speaker 2: I first got to Scottsdale, I was playing four or
[38:23] Speaker 2: five days a week. It was something that I really
[38:25] Speaker 2: fell in love with. And over the last, I don't know,
[38:28] Speaker 2: year and a half, it's something I've kind of put
[38:29] Speaker 2: on the back burner. Are you still in Scottsdale? Still
[38:32] Speaker 2: in Scottsdale.
[38:33] Speaker 4: Man, dude.
[38:35] Speaker 2: That town is... How, man? How is that? Man, my
[38:39] Speaker 2: life is, I don't fucking go out anymore. No, but
[38:42] Speaker 2: what I'm saying is. But when that town was rocking
[38:44] Speaker 2: and like it was. Why is it not now? I
[38:46] Speaker 2: don't go out anymore. No, but I'm asking you, you
[38:48] Speaker 2: still know. I really couldn't tell you.
[38:50] Speaker 3: That is a tough town to be in either, either
[38:53] Speaker 3: sobriety or in a committed relationship. That city specifically, dude, Scottsdale,
[38:58] Speaker 3: Arizona is a tough.
[38:59] Speaker 2: Place, dude. It's a, it's a lively city for sure.
[39:02] Speaker 2: Shut up, Dustin.
[39:03] Speaker 1: Can I ask a potentially dumb ass question? Go for it.
[39:08] Speaker 1: Is it too late for you to go back and
[39:10] Speaker 1: be a quarterback in the NFL?
[39:12] Speaker 2: I asked myself this question last year probably at some
[39:16] Speaker 2: point in time. I got myself into a mindset of, okay,
[39:21] Speaker 2: I'm going to go start working out again, throwing the
[39:24] Speaker 2: football around. Let's like, see if I can still like
[39:26] Speaker 2: get myself in shape and like compete at that kind
[39:31] Speaker 2: of level, or just like see myself on a football field,
[39:33] Speaker 2: making the throws that I could have at one point
[39:35] Speaker 2: in time. And I remember calling my agent and being like, okay,
[39:38] Speaker 2: this is something I think, I think I'm going to
[39:40] Speaker 2: try and make like a comeback. He's like, oh, okay.
[39:44] Speaker 2: We'll start talking with some guys, UFL, XFL. And I'm
[39:46] Speaker 2: just sitting there thinking like, Bro, there's no way I'm
[39:49] Speaker 2: going back to fucking play in one of these like
[39:52] Speaker 2: early leagues or like, you know, UFL, XFL, anything like
[39:57] Speaker 2: that and go do that whole thing again. You know,
[39:59] Speaker 2: after I got cut, I went and played in Canada
[40:02] Speaker 2: for a year. I did some of these like smaller
[40:04] Speaker 2: leagues to try and like work my way back into
[40:07] Speaker 2: getting into the NFL. And it just, it wasn't ever
[40:11] Speaker 2: going to happen. So as, you know, I went through
[40:13] Speaker 2: this process last year, I'm like, I'm not going back
[40:16] Speaker 2: into these leagues to go try and have like a
[40:18] Speaker 2: three or four game stretch where you like show yourself
[40:20] Speaker 2: that you're maybe able to be able to get invited
[40:22] Speaker 2: to a training camp. So, you know, as much as
[40:25] Speaker 2: I would like to think that that's something I could do,
[40:27] Speaker 2: I think at 32, my chances are probably pretty chalked. No. Wait,
[40:32] Speaker 2: why though?
[40:33] Speaker 1: Is it the physicality of it all? Is it the mindset?
[40:36] Speaker 2: He's just taking so much time off the game. I
[40:38] Speaker 2: think it's just being out of the game for so long.
[40:40] Speaker 2: You know, the speed of it, just everything. You know,
[40:43] Speaker 2: if you're not really doing that, every single day, day
[40:47] Speaker 2: in and day out. There is no way to emulate
[40:50] Speaker 2: game speed, game reps. You don't get that anywhere other
[40:54] Speaker 2: than the NFL.
[40:55] Speaker 3: I mean, at his current age, that's when careers are
[40:58] Speaker 3: starting to tail down.
[40:59] Speaker 2: Not if you're a quarterback. Not if you're a quarterback.
[41:01] Speaker 3: I agree, but dude, the idea of pulling out of
[41:04] Speaker 3: the league for the length of time he had.
[41:06] Speaker 2: It's been 2015. This will be 10 years.
[41:11] Speaker 3: Powerball potentially is a better shot. I hate, he knows,
[41:15] Speaker 3: he knows that. He's not, I mean, it's- Yeah, but dude,
[41:18] Speaker 3: I just, everyone loves a comeback story.
[41:20] Speaker 2: No, no, no, it would be the greatest- It would
[41:22] Speaker 2: be fucking crazy, dude. It would be the greatest ending
[41:24] Speaker 2: story of all time. It would be such a cool way.
[41:25] Speaker 2: And I thought about getting a chance to be able
[41:27] Speaker 2: to go through a training camp, maybe make a roster,
[41:29] Speaker 2: get on the field to even remotely play again, how
[41:32] Speaker 2: amazing it would be. Fucking amazing.
[41:34] Speaker 3: But you wouldn't do one year in a different league
[41:37] Speaker 3: or something to try to stepping stone back in?
[41:39] Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think so. You'd have to commit to
[41:41] Speaker 1: being a small dog.
[41:44] Speaker 2: Or a mini 32, 33 years old going into a
[41:46] Speaker 2: league with a bunch of 20, 21, 22 year old guys.
[41:49] Speaker 2: It sounds like a movie. It sounds like a, like
[41:51] Speaker 2: a movie. It is a movie. Oh yeah. What's that movie? Oh,
[41:55] Speaker 2: the rookie. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, who's the lead star?
[41:58] Speaker 2: It's Quade. That's right. Logan wouldn't be able to identify
[42:01] Speaker 2: him if you ask him. No, I know Dennis Quade.
[42:03] Speaker 2: I know Dennis Quade. Can I say it?
[42:07] Speaker 3: Certain people he runs into, like, we make a joke
[42:09] Speaker 3: out of it because he's so new school, bro. So
[42:12] Speaker 3: yesterday we're standing at the top of the fanatic stage.
[42:14] Speaker 2: I'm so sorry.
[42:15] Speaker 1: I'm so sorry, Kevin.
[42:16] Speaker 3: Kevin Costner walks up the stairs and me and Jeff
[42:19] Speaker 3: are like, me and Jeff, manager Jeff, always joke around
[42:22] Speaker 3: about it. Like, should we do it? So I'm like, Logan,
[42:24] Speaker 3: I want to introduce you to somebody. And he's like, yo,
[42:26] Speaker 3: good to meet you, boss. Takes a picture with him.
[42:29] Speaker 3: Costner walks back up the stairs. And me and Jeff
[42:31] Speaker 3: just are laughing. We're like, dude, you got to fix
[42:33] Speaker 3: this problem. You got to fix this issue. Dude, because
[42:36] Speaker 3: they were freaking out.
[42:37] Speaker 2: They're like, he's one of the greatest ever in history.
[42:41] Speaker 1: He was very nice. We had a great conversation. But afterwards,
[42:44] Speaker 1: they're like, dude, do you know who that was? I
[42:46] Speaker 1: was like, no, just a nice guy.
[42:50] Speaker 2: By the way, he knows him. Costner knows him.
[42:53] Speaker 1: That's the worst part about it.
[42:54] Speaker 2: Because they study the craft.
[42:55] Speaker 1: The worst part about it, man. I just feel, I feel,
[42:59] Speaker 1: I feel so bad. Like, I don't know. I don't
[43:01] Speaker 1: know how I didn't watch Yellowstone.
[43:03] Speaker 3: I was going to say, let me back you up
[43:05] Speaker 3: a little bit. If, if without Yellowstone, what else is recent?
[43:08] Speaker 3: I mean, dude, for obvious, no, no, no. That's what
[43:10] Speaker 3: I'm saying for, for me, for Amy, for John, like bodyguard,
[43:14] Speaker 3: like all the way back to feel the dreams, like
[43:15] Speaker 3: all that stuff. One of the most complete actors of
[43:17] Speaker 3: all time. But for him, he was, he was born
[43:20] Speaker 3: in like 2009 or something like that bro like spongebob
[43:23] Speaker 3: was already like eight seasons in when he was born
[43:26] Speaker 3: that's not true one fun question i know i see
[43:28] Speaker 3: you one if.
[43:29] Speaker 2: You're not if you're not watching yellowstone or like have
[43:31] Speaker 2: that's probably the most that's what i was gonna say
[43:32] Speaker 2: like be up to date.
[43:33] Speaker 3: You get a little pass on it uh i gotta
[43:36] Speaker 3: ask you about draft day bro like maybe the last
[43:38] Speaker 3: question how does because you might be the only person
[43:42] Speaker 3: that has like a drake song kind of like really
[43:45] Speaker 3: based on them dude like think about that how does
[43:47] Speaker 3: the relationship go from like Johnny, Johnny football, the brand
[43:52] Speaker 3: you link with Drake to a point where he actually
[43:54] Speaker 3: is going to make a song that has is about you.
[43:56] Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, it's like, that's never what I expected
[43:59] Speaker 2: when I first met him or like became friends with
[44:01] Speaker 2: him or anything like that. I think it's something that,
[44:04] Speaker 2: you know, it's kind of like immortalized me in the OVO,
[44:08] Speaker 2: like crew and like fans that you see all over
[44:11] Speaker 2: the place. Like I'm definitely, you know, go hand in
[44:14] Speaker 2: hand with Drake probably for the rest of my life. I,
[44:17] Speaker 2: you know, Can't be, like, more thankful that, like, even
[44:21] Speaker 2: through everything that's happened, I think, you know, even during
[44:24] Speaker 2: my worst, like, year in 2016 running around being a jackass,
[44:28] Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure every single night you would see me
[44:30] Speaker 2: out in L.A. I have a different OVO shirt or fucking...
[44:33] Speaker 2: chain or like something on so i was definitely representing
[44:36] Speaker 2: the brand and my demise a little bit but you
[44:39] Speaker 2: know i got a chance a couple years ago on
[44:41] Speaker 2: this last tour to do the whole walk out with
[44:43] Speaker 2: him it's the guy that never switched up on me
[44:46] Speaker 2: always reaches out always have a great relationship even though
[44:49] Speaker 2: people probably around him are like man he's he stayed
[44:52] Speaker 2: as loyal to me as is you know the first
[44:54] Speaker 2: day he ever really did that song so you know
[44:57] Speaker 2: it's it's dope to be immortalized with a song like
[44:59] Speaker 2: that and something from you know somebody who i think
[45:02] Speaker 2: is the greatest artist of of our generation is still
[45:05] Speaker 2: going strong. And it's a banger. It's a great song.
[45:08] Speaker 2: It's a proper banger. I remember the first night, he
[45:11] Speaker 2: called me in the middle of the night. It's like
[45:12] Speaker 2: seeing the phone ring and listening to him play it.
[45:14] Speaker 2: I'm like, holy fuck. No way. I got to walk
[45:18] Speaker 2: out to Radio City Music Hall and get drafted to it.
[45:20] Speaker 2: I'm like, this is fucking sick.
[45:21] Speaker 1: That's crazy.
[45:23] Speaker 2: And that night, the night getting drafted, know he's there
[45:27] Speaker 2: at the draft party like to be able to like
[45:29] Speaker 2: do that with a guy who was like my idol
[45:31] Speaker 2: the biggest legend to me ever was dream come true.
[45:35] Speaker 3: Did you pay did you pay it back during the
[45:37] Speaker 3: recent beef did you reach out to him and make
[45:39] Speaker 3: sure he was cool he was.
[45:41] Speaker 2: Good he's always fun no but did you johnny did
[45:43] Speaker 2: i reach out to him during this beef no what's
[45:46] Speaker 2: a drink bro.
[45:47] Speaker 1: Uh dude Dude, I'm ready for your comeback. Whatever it is,
[45:54] Speaker 1: even if it's not football.
[45:55] Speaker 2: You're going back to Cleveland, buddy. We got good news
[45:57] Speaker 2: for you. We're going back to Cleveland. Nah, because, bro,
[46:00] Speaker 2: you know a lot.
[46:02] Speaker 1: You've been through a lot, especially with the game of football,
[46:06] Speaker 1: something around football. I don't know, dude. I feel like, dude,
[46:08] Speaker 1: the comeback stories are incredible. And it's not that you're
[46:11] Speaker 1: not back, because in many ways, it sounds like, especially personally,
[46:15] Speaker 1: you've gotten to a place where you're really good.
[46:17] Speaker 2: But.
[46:18] Speaker 1: Man, I feel like your story is not complete. I
[46:21] Speaker 1: feel like it's ripe for something big. I don't know
[46:23] Speaker 1: what it is. You know too much. You know too much.
[46:26] Speaker 1: You know too many people. You've been around. You're really
[46:28] Speaker 1: good at a thing. Like really good at football, football
[46:32] Speaker 1: related stuff.
[46:32] Speaker 2: Like, I don't know, bro.
[46:33] Speaker 1: I don't know.
[46:34] Speaker 2: It'll play itself out.
[46:35] Speaker 1: I want you to get back in the saddle.
[46:36] Speaker 2: No doubt. Come back, play for Cleveland.
[46:38] Speaker 1: We need you.
[46:40] Speaker 2: Is that it? Are you hard outing us or no?
[46:44] Speaker 1: Oh, shit.
[46:45] Speaker 3: No.
[46:46] Speaker 2: Hey, you want to try a lunch leave or something? Shows.
[46:51] Speaker 2: What's going on with shows? Man. That's a great question.
[46:57] Speaker 2: What are you guys doing this weekend? That's probably a
[46:59] Speaker 2: better question. Wait, what type of time do you have?
[47:04] Speaker 2: Fucking all the time in the world. When is he
[47:06] Speaker 2: done today? Six.
[47:08] Speaker 3: He can't finish a little sooner. We have room on
[47:14] Speaker 3: the chopper for palm trees. I don't think you should
[47:16] Speaker 3: come with us, dude. I think you need to, I think.
[47:20] Speaker 2: Oh, tomorrow. Oh no, forget it then.
[47:22] Speaker 3: We are, we will be back here tomorrow on a
[47:24] Speaker 3: chopper by 11 AM, but you would not make that chopper.
[47:26] Speaker 2: I know you too well, dude. You would not make
[47:29] Speaker 2: it to the chopper. Early morning choppers are not my forte.
[47:31] Speaker 2: They're not ours either, but we got to do it sometimes.
[47:34] Speaker 2: What are your biggest fears? Biggest fears. That's a, uh,
[47:40] Speaker 2: That's a great choppers choppers early morning helicopter. We got
[47:45] Speaker 2: to go.
[47:46] Speaker 3: Cause we have fanatics in WWE, by the way, shout
[47:48] Speaker 3: out fanatics, WWE. What a great podcast platform to be
[47:51] Speaker 3: on and fanatics fest. I want to ask you one
[47:53] Speaker 3: last question. Men's mental health month. If there's somebody out
[47:56] Speaker 3: there right now, sitting in the room, having a tough time.
[47:59] Speaker 3: I mean, is there anything that you could, any word
[48:01] Speaker 3: of advice you could give them?
[48:02] Speaker 2: And I would say, reach out, ask for help. You know,
[48:04] Speaker 2: if you don't have those, you know, luxuries of being
[48:07] Speaker 2: able to have somebody reach out and help i would
[48:09] Speaker 2: say just continue to fight man continue to uh you
[48:12] Speaker 2: know fight that mental battle and keep going like days
[48:14] Speaker 2: do get better as dark as it gets as dark
[48:16] Speaker 2: as it feels like you know i've been there you've
[48:19] Speaker 2: been there um you know keep fighting because at the
[48:23] Speaker 2: end of the day life is worth it we only
[48:24] Speaker 2: get one of these opportunities to go through it so
[48:27] Speaker 2: um you know keep fighting Johnny freaking Manziel, dude. Let's go.
[48:32] Speaker 2: Thanks for finally joining us. Thank you, brother.
[48:35] Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Before you go, can I have you
[48:37] Speaker 1: look at that camera right there?
[48:38] Speaker 2: Do you ever say goodbye to the audience anymore?
[48:40] Speaker 5: Goodbye.
