If you grew up with TKZee, you know Kabelo Mabalane as Bouga Luv one of the voices that helped define an era of South African music. From “Shibobo” and “Dlala Mapantsula” with TKZee to “Pantsula 4 Life” in his solo career, Kabelo has been part of the soundtrack of South Africa for decades. But it’s been 11 years since his last solo album, and now he’s back not trying to recreate the Kabelo of the past, but making music from the man he has become: a husband, father, pastor and someone who has lived through some very different chapters of his life. His new single “Everybody Needs Somebody” featuring The Arrows is already out, and it’s the first taste of his upcoming tenth solo album, For King And Country. He’s described this new chapter of his sound as “Street Psalms” bringing his kwaito roots together with where he is spiritually and personally today. So today, we get to ask the questions we’ve all been wondering: Why now? What made him finally feel ready to return to music? Can Bouga Luv still make a proper kwaito banger? And after everything that has happened in his life, what does Kabelo Mabalane actually want his music to say now? Kabelo Mabalane is joining us in studio! ## Transcript

[0:00] Speaker 1: Wake up with a bang.
[0:02] Speaker 2: Hey, wake up!
[0:03] Speaker 3: Anele and the club.
[0:04] Speaker 1: On 947. How excited am I, Frankie?
[0:08] Speaker 2: You are so excited for this morning.
[0:11] Speaker 3: Guys, I don't think you understand how happy it makes
[0:13] Speaker 3: me when I see Kabeloma Balan. It just makes my day.
[0:18] Speaker 3: I don't know what it is about him. I don't
[0:20] Speaker 3: know what aura this man has. I don't know what
[0:22] Speaker 3: cologne he's using. I don't know what that wife is
[0:25] Speaker 3: feeding him in the morning, morning gale. I just, I'm
[0:29] Speaker 3: just so excited.
[0:30] Speaker 1: Hit it.
[0:30] Speaker 3: It's my house.
[0:32] Speaker 1: My name is Gabelo Mabalan. At the age of 19,
[0:36] Speaker 1: I was a rock star.
[0:37] Speaker 3: Make all the noise, you can't fight. TKV.
[0:44] Speaker 4: TKZ, Kwaito, the Golden Heroes.
[0:50] Speaker 3: He's a philanthropist, a comrades runner, he's a rapper. He's
[0:53] Speaker 3: recorded eight of his own solo albums. Velo Mabelani's story
[0:57] Speaker 3: was never just about the music. It's a story of
[1:00] Speaker 3: rock bottom and recovery.
[1:02] Speaker 1: You can't keep a good man down. It's a thing
[1:05] Speaker 1: I work at seven, you probably make a.
[1:06] Speaker 4: Seven because you can't keep a good man down.
[1:09] Speaker 1: Who make a single but you will, you will, you will.
[1:20] Speaker 3: I've practiced this for a very long time.
[1:21] Speaker 4: Okay.
[1:22] Speaker 3: So I'm hoping, because this is what people do to musicians,
[1:25] Speaker 3: that you start something and they go along with you, né? Right.
[1:28] Speaker 2: Okay, let's see this.
[1:30] Speaker 1: She's hoping.
[1:30] Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay.
[1:32] Speaker 1: Uh-huh, uh-huh.
[1:35] Speaker 3: Here I am.
[1:36] Speaker 5: Boogie love coming with the fat jam. That cat that
[1:39] Speaker 5: doesn't give a damn. But anyway, I figured this, that
[1:42] Speaker 5: if you don't stop, then I won't quit. Keep trying
[1:45] Speaker 5: to make money so life can be a pure bliss.
[1:47] Speaker 5: Reminisce on days gone by, like we all know, only
[1:51] Speaker 5: the strong survive. Don't be scared, just let each other fly.
[1:54] Speaker 5: Just chill and see how we get by. And please
[1:57] Speaker 5: don't get caught up in the mix. This world is
[2:00] Speaker 5: full of dirty tricks. Add to that, never trust a trick.
[2:04] Speaker 3: With God's blessing, nobody's going to take my place.
[2:06] Speaker 1: Because damn, I just love this place. With God's blessing,
[2:10] Speaker 1: nobody's going to take my place. I just love this place.
[2:17] Speaker 2: Wow, wow, wow, wow.
[2:20] Speaker 4: You know, moments like that, man. What this thing has
[2:23] Speaker 4: become is.
[2:26] Speaker 4: I'm just like befuddled baffled in terms of what this
[2:30] Speaker 4: thing has become because when we were in studio just
[2:34] Speaker 4: even listening back to the intro all these songs coming
[2:37] Speaker 4: back you have no idea that it's going to accrue
[2:40] Speaker 4: to a moment like this where I'm turning 50 this
[2:44] Speaker 4: year and it's only now where I'm actually starting to
[2:47] Speaker 4: take it in and go damn I did a lot
[2:49] Speaker 4: we've done the things man.
[2:51] Speaker 3: So I like that you say that you say what
[2:53] Speaker 3: this thing has become what this thing has become what
[2:55] Speaker 3: is this thing um.
[2:57] Speaker 4: There's so much value there's a it's value it's contribution
[3:01] Speaker 4: it's it's lots of hard work it's dedication you know
[3:04] Speaker 4: um and to be able to be turning 50 this
[3:09] Speaker 4: year and and still have the ability to harness it
[3:12] Speaker 4: to go forward because it's it's it's mine i didn't
[3:15] Speaker 4: build it alone you know there's you know there's no
[3:18] Speaker 4: such thing as independence you know there's interdependence you know
[3:21] Speaker 4: um There's so.
[3:23] Speaker 1: Many people who've contributed, right?
[3:25] Speaker 4: But I have the privilege of harnessing all of that
[3:28] Speaker 4: now and moving forward and continuing to build.
[3:32] Speaker 2: Because I have a question about that, right?
[3:33] Speaker 6: Because when you start off on this thing, and do
[3:36] Speaker 6: you ever start going 30 years from now?
[3:39] Speaker 1: Absolutely not.
[3:40] Speaker 2: There's never a thought.
[3:41] Speaker 6: It's like, I want to be the biggest rock star
[3:43] Speaker 6: in South Africa this year.
[3:45] Speaker 4: I mean, this verse that we just spat now.
[3:52] Speaker 5: Wrote.
[3:54] Speaker 4: in 1998 by a very insecure don't know whether I'm
[4:01] Speaker 4: coming or going young man who's on the verge of
[4:05] Speaker 4: you know who was already like successful but I wasn't
[4:09] Speaker 4: like I wasn't the person that I am now I'd
[4:12] Speaker 4: love to believe I would love to believe I'm more
[4:14] Speaker 4: whole now and when I think of that young man
[4:17] Speaker 4: who wrote that verse I He had no idea.
[4:21] Speaker 2: He didn't know anything.
[4:22] Speaker 1: Nothing.
[4:22] Speaker 3: But what does Insecure look like when... Because this was Halloween.
[4:27] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[4:28] Speaker 3: And Halloween is the best South African album. Not quite
[4:31] Speaker 3: the album. Get me right when I say this to you.
[4:34] Speaker 3: Halloween is the best South African album to come out
[4:37] Speaker 3: of this country. From the first song to the last song,
[4:39] Speaker 3: you guys.
[4:39] Speaker 1: Had us gripped.
[4:41] Speaker 3: I know VW sales for the Caravelle skyrocketed.
[4:43] Speaker 1: Just because of it. Just because of TKZ.
[4:45] Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
[4:46] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[4:47] Speaker 3: So what does insecure look... What are you insecure about?
[4:50] Speaker 3: Are you insecure that it's going to end? Are you
[4:52] Speaker 3: insecure that we're going to find you out, that you're
[4:54] Speaker 3: not as talented as we are putting you out to be?
[4:57] Speaker 3: What's the insecurity?
[4:58] Speaker 4: So now, you know, that young man is surrounded by
[5:01] Speaker 4: these two giants, right?
[5:02] Speaker 3: Tukulo and Zwei.
[5:04] Speaker 4: Tukulo on my left and Zwei on my right. Giants,
[5:08] Speaker 4: you know, in my opinion, you know, and they could
[5:12] Speaker 4: do no wrong. And I guess it's about... The desire
[5:15] Speaker 4: to grow at that moment in time, you know, wanting
[5:19] Speaker 4: to also contribute as much as they were contributing. And
[5:22] Speaker 4: I kind of felt, you know, that I wasn't at
[5:24] Speaker 4: the time, but the desire was there. And look, I
[5:27] Speaker 4: feel when I look back, you know, even as a
[5:29] Speaker 4: pastor now, counseling and talking to many like 20 year olds,
[5:32] Speaker 4: I always tell them like, listen, you got to put
[5:34] Speaker 4: your seatbelt on because.
[5:36] Speaker 1: The 20s are rough.
[5:38] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[5:39] Speaker 4: You still, you don't know who you are. You don't
[5:41] Speaker 4: know whether you're coming or going. You've just fresh out
[5:45] Speaker 4: of school. And then, you know, music was like, if
[5:48] Speaker 4: music didn't work, I was toast. That's also the pressure.
[5:52] Speaker 1: Oh, because you don't have a full plan. Yeah, because school,
[5:54] Speaker 1: there's no school. My parents wanted me to go to.
[5:57] Speaker 4: School and everything, but we were like, we doubled down.
[6:00] Speaker 1: And did the music thing. So it's all those insecurities.
[6:03] Speaker 1: Is this thing going to work? Is this thing going
[6:05] Speaker 1: to last?
[6:06] Speaker 3: How often are you questioning yourself? Because here's another thing,
[6:09] Speaker 3: and most therapists will... we'll also maybe answer this. How
[6:15] Speaker 3: often are you doubtful of yourself? Because how much work
[6:19] Speaker 3: can you do if you're constantly doubting yourself? Or have
[6:21] Speaker 3: you figured out a way to create a beast out
[6:23] Speaker 3: of both sides, the diligent hard worker and the doubting Tom?
[6:27] Speaker 4: So, yeah, I think naturally I'm wired to work really,
[6:32] Speaker 4: really hard.
[6:33] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[6:35] Speaker 4: But I'm also a very competitive, like naturally, like there
[6:40] Speaker 4: is this competitive drive in me And I think that's
[6:44] Speaker 4: kind of what has quietened the doubting, so to speak,
[6:48] Speaker 4: in that early part of my life.
[6:52] Speaker 3: You've just explained so much about myself. Is that every
[6:55] Speaker 3: time a doubt comes up, because I work so hard,
[6:58] Speaker 3: I work myself into a place where I'm like, no, no.
[7:03] Speaker 3: At the very least, there's work ethic here. If I
[7:06] Speaker 3: doubt the talent or if I doubt how much I
[7:09] Speaker 3: can put on the scoreboard, I can work myself towards quieting. Oh,
[7:13] Speaker 3: thank you so much for that.
[7:14] Speaker 6: But I've got a question about that, though, because, you know,
[7:17] Speaker 6: like you said, you work hard, right? But have you
[7:20] Speaker 6: ever been in a moment, because you've done so many
[7:23] Speaker 6: different things across the last 35 years, right? Have you
[7:26] Speaker 6: ever been in a moment where you're like, I'm working
[7:28] Speaker 6: really hard at something, but I'm not sure it's the
[7:30] Speaker 6: right thing to be working hard at? Because that's where
[7:33] Speaker 6: the doubt creeps in for me.
[7:34] Speaker 4: Yes.
[7:34] Speaker 3: 100%.
[7:34] Speaker 2: I mean.
[7:37] Speaker 4: As you say that, you know, there was a period where,
[7:40] Speaker 4: you know, Danny and I started shout.
[7:42] Speaker 5: Right.
[7:43] Speaker 1: You know, and my friend had a dream. I believed
[7:46] Speaker 1: in the dream. I said, let's do this thing.
[7:48] Speaker 4: Right.
[7:50] Speaker 1: And then it became, I thought we were just doing
[7:53] Speaker 1: one song.
[7:54] Speaker 3: It became a movement.
[7:55] Speaker 4: And we were just going to, you know, and then
[7:57] Speaker 4: this thing started taking a lot of oxygen in the room.
[7:59] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[8:00] Speaker 1: And then you're like, I'm deviating.
[8:04] Speaker 4: But it's also a good thing because we are and
[8:08] Speaker 4: should be responsible citizens. And then you're like, is this
[8:12] Speaker 4: the right thing? Should I be expending as much energy?
[8:14] Speaker 4: Because it kept on taking and taking and taking. Well,
[8:16] Speaker 4: that's the thing. But it was a good thing. And
[8:19] Speaker 4: I think that's kind of how you reconcile everything and go,
[8:23] Speaker 4: you know what?
[8:24] Speaker 1: We're moving the needle.
[8:25] Speaker 4: We've built 13 libraries across the country. I think we
[8:29] Speaker 4: can pat ourselves on the back. So I think that
[8:31] Speaker 4: circumvents everything. that doubt of whether you're doing the right thing.
[8:35] Speaker 4: Is it helping other people? And those are kind of
[8:39] Speaker 4: the things that you can look out for.
[8:40] Speaker 3: Okay.
[8:41] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[8:42] Speaker 4: But you can be really good at something that you
[8:44] Speaker 4: shouldn't be doing. And I think it's important to always
[8:47] Speaker 4: be doing the introspection.
[8:49] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[8:49] Speaker 2: Well, I mean, that's your point.
[8:51] Speaker 6: Does it fit what your pillars are for a human, right?
[8:54] Speaker 3: Exactly.
[8:54] Speaker 2: Are you going down the right path?
[8:56] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[8:56] Speaker 1: And not necessarily just generally as a human, you.
[8:59] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[8:59] Speaker 4: I think it's important to go, does this line up with,
[9:03] Speaker 4: you know, me and what I believe in and my fundamentals.
[9:05] Speaker 4: And I think if it does, it's cool. You know,
[9:08] Speaker 4: I always say, for example, I use this principle, you know,
[9:10] Speaker 4: there's no such thing. There's three things I believe that
[9:14] Speaker 4: you'll never walk away from, you know, thinking you've.
[9:16] Speaker 1: Wasted your time. It's time in the gym.
[9:21] Speaker 4: Your time spent with God and your time with education.
[9:24] Speaker 4: You can study the wrong thing, but you'll never walk
[9:26] Speaker 4: away from it.
[9:27] Speaker 1: It's not a waste. It's never going to be a waste.
[9:29] Speaker 1: It's never going to be a waste. So again, let's
[9:31] Speaker 1: say community work.
[9:33] Speaker 4: Maybe it wasn't something you were meant to do, but
[9:35] Speaker 4: you'll never walk away from there having felt less.
[9:38] Speaker 1: Feeling less than.
[9:39] Speaker 2: That's good.
[9:40] Speaker 3: Before we go to Tempe Gile for headlines, I want
[9:44] Speaker 3: to go back to that phrase they said, taking up.
[9:46] Speaker 1: Oxygen in the room.
[9:48] Speaker 3: For somebody who walked into a class and didn't know
[9:50] Speaker 3: English and Miss Judith Lacey had to help him.
[9:53] Speaker 1: How do you know Judith Lacey? Yeah, because you couldn't
[9:56] Speaker 1: speak English. That's how I know. Because we need to
[9:59] Speaker 1: know it.
[10:00] Speaker 2: To blame.
[10:01] Speaker 1: We need to.
[10:02] Speaker 3: So, now, Miss Judith Lacey, wherever she is, I don't
[10:05] Speaker 3: know if she's still alive, but.
[10:06] Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
[10:06] Speaker 3: She hears Gabelo on 947 saying, you're taking up.
[10:10] Speaker 1: Oxygen in the room.
[10:11] Speaker 3: She's like.
[10:14] Speaker 1: She's like, hey.
[10:16] Speaker 3: Job done. Job done. It's always so tricky when your
[10:21] Speaker 3: friend releases a song, because now you must listen to it.
[10:24] Speaker 3: And then you have to be honest.
[10:27] Speaker 6: Because this is the first time we've heard it.
[10:29] Speaker 1: We didn't hear it before.
[10:31] Speaker 3: Okay, cool. So now you're just like, please be good.
[10:34] Speaker 1: Please be good.
[10:36] Speaker 3: Give this man a round of applause.
[10:37] Speaker 2: No, give him a round of applause.
[10:44] Speaker 6: I heard this being mixed into every summer party coming
[10:48] Speaker 6: up in 2026.
[10:48] Speaker 3: It's so joyful. It's so joyful.
[10:51] Speaker 5: Yes.
[10:52] Speaker 3: Quickly, before I tell you what I want to tell
[10:53] Speaker 3: you about this song, thank you so much to gymstore.co.za.
[10:57] Speaker 3: When we did Gabelo's intro, as a team, we always
[11:01] Speaker 3: like to welcome people into the building in a way
[11:03] Speaker 3: that speaks to them. So when we sat around the room,
[11:05] Speaker 3: we're like, you know, what is this man about? He's
[11:07] Speaker 3: about his wife. He's about his kids. He's about God.
[11:10] Speaker 3: He's about Rema. He's about fitness. Okay, he's about music.
[11:14] Speaker 3: He's about just being a good person. But fitness is
[11:16] Speaker 3: the one that we thought we were going to go with.
[11:18] Speaker 3: So we kitted out our entire foyer here with gym equipment.
[11:22] Speaker 3: And it was one big High Rocks CrossFit class.
[11:26] Speaker 1: I nearly did two burpees.
[11:28] Speaker 3: Thank you.
[11:29] Speaker 1: Thank you.
[11:30] Speaker 4: She didn't go all the way down, though, so I
[11:32] Speaker 4: don't know if they qualify.
[11:34] Speaker 2: I was going to say, it feels like he's throwing shade.
[11:36] Speaker 2: He was like, two. There was only two burpees.
[11:38] Speaker 3: I check. Either way, gymstore.co.za. They can kit out your gym.
[11:44] Speaker 3: They can rent your gym equipment for your house. If
[11:46] Speaker 3: you want to do a private gym at your house
[11:48] Speaker 3: as well, they can help you. If you want to
[11:49] Speaker 3: open your own gym, you don't have to buy the equipment.
[11:52] Speaker 3: You can just rent from them and then they service it.
[11:54] Speaker 3: They maintain it. They really are a good step up
[11:57] Speaker 3: towards the fitness life.
[11:58] Speaker 6: This stuff is really cool. I spent some time, me
[12:00] Speaker 6: and Matt, flex on all the equipment here.
[12:02] Speaker 2: It's very cool.
[12:02] Speaker 3: Gymstore.co.za.
[12:04] Speaker 1: Please play that song again.
[12:05] Speaker 3: I want to speak underneath it because there's something I
[12:07] Speaker 3: want to tell you about it. Um, Firstly, you did
[12:11] Speaker 3: that song. The song is called Everybody Needs Somebody.
[12:13] Speaker 1: Yes. Featuring the Arrows. Yes.
[12:16] Speaker 3: I was a little nervous when I heard featuring the
[12:17] Speaker 3: Arrows because I was like, oh, it's going to sound
[12:18] Speaker 3: like Durban. You know, they're my Durban Caucasians, right?
[12:22] Speaker 1: But they actually step.
[12:23] Speaker 3: More to our side than you to their side.
[12:25] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[12:27] Speaker 3: This reminds me of the good old days of you
[12:29] Speaker 3: guys and WHP. Yeah.
[12:31] Speaker 4: I mean, it does have a proper nostalgic vibe.
[12:35] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[12:36] Speaker 4: I mean it does also borrow a little bit from
[12:39] Speaker 4: there's like a 1980 bubblegum thing going on. There's also
[12:44] Speaker 4: like a thing hidden in there. Yeah, just all around
[12:49] Speaker 4: South African good vibes, man.
[12:51] Speaker 1: And also true to me.
[12:53] Speaker 3: Yes.
[12:53] Speaker 1: You know, I think.
[12:54] Speaker 3: It sounds like you.
[12:55] Speaker 1: Yeah, it sounds like me.
[12:55] Speaker 3: You didn't try to do music that's popular right now. No.
[12:58] Speaker 3: You did music that Gabelo is good at.
[13:01] Speaker 1: 100%.
[13:01] Speaker 4: And, you know, even with the pending album, I'm so,
[13:05] Speaker 4: I'm proud. You know when you're proud of your work?
[13:08] Speaker 4: And I can say that because there's work that I
[13:10] Speaker 4: haven't been proud of.
[13:12] Speaker 3: Okay.
[13:12] Speaker 1: Like, for real.
[13:13] Speaker 3: Give me one.
[13:15] Speaker 1: I'd say anything I made between, you know, 2008 and 2015.
[13:18] Speaker 4: I was kind of caught up in, you know, chasing
[13:23] Speaker 4: trends and just trying to be I don't know.
[13:28] Speaker 1: Who, you know.
[13:29] Speaker 4: And I'm really grateful for the 11-year hiatus because, you know,
[13:34] Speaker 4: obviously I got married, got kids and, you know, that.
[13:37] Speaker 1: Kind of put the oxygen in the room.
[13:42] Speaker 4: And in that 11 years I guess there was also
[13:45] Speaker 4: like okay who are you as a musician because the
[13:48] Speaker 4: gift is is it's always there yeah and it needs
[13:50] Speaker 4: to express itself um but I knew that um when
[13:55] Speaker 4: you if you express yourself from an inauthentic place again The.
[14:01] Speaker 1: Music buying public is not... They're brutal. Yeah. And then
[14:05] Speaker 1: you start to leave, not on your own terms.
[14:08] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[14:09] Speaker 1: You get kicked out.
[14:10] Speaker 3: Yeah. They don't answer the calls anymore.
[14:11] Speaker 1: Yeah, and then it's like, nah, you know.
[14:13] Speaker 4: And then, you know, then I arrived at this moment
[14:16] Speaker 4: where I'm like, I need to make music that actually
[14:19] Speaker 4: is cognizant of who I am now.
[14:21] Speaker 1: I'm a father... You know, I'm a husband, I'm a pastor,
[14:25] Speaker 1: I'm a leader. I've grown, I'm 50.
[14:27] Speaker 4: You know, I'm turning 50 this year. And I make
[14:30] Speaker 4: music from there. And when it kind of dawned on
[14:32] Speaker 4: me that that's kind of what I need to do,
[14:34] Speaker 4: I really believe I've hit a rich vein of of creativity,
[14:38] Speaker 4: and it's just pouring out.
[14:39] Speaker 1: Of me right now.
[14:41] Speaker 3: You can hear it.
[14:44] Speaker 1: Listen.
[14:47] Speaker 3: Frankie stated, I just imagine a summer party.
[14:50] Speaker 1: We're by the pool.
[14:51] Speaker 3: You can smell the voice.
[14:53] Speaker 1: Yes.
[14:55] Speaker 3: So tell me, the kid who's in the car playing
[14:58] Speaker 3: a Frank Sinatra song for their dad.
[15:00] Speaker 1: Yes. That kid, yeah.
[15:02] Speaker 3: You were that kid. Yes. Trying to impress your dad
[15:04] Speaker 3: with your music knowledge, right? Yes.
[15:06] Speaker 1: Dad is not impressed.
[15:07] Speaker 3: He's like, okay, go to school.
[15:09] Speaker 2: I've been listening.
[15:10] Speaker 1: Or I've been playing Frank Sinatra. Like, what are you, like,
[15:13] Speaker 1: trying to impress me with now?
[15:15] Speaker 3: If your kids are in the car and they want
[15:17] Speaker 3: to impress you with a song, what do they play you? Ooh. Um.
[15:22] Speaker 4: Zoe would play me, she loves this group called, and
[15:27] Speaker 4: actually there are some songs that I actually genuinely like. Right, right.
[15:31] Speaker 1: It's called, they got a song out called Gnarly. Okay.
[15:36] Speaker 1: It's Cat's Eye. Oh, we played that.
[15:40] Speaker 3: Okay.
[15:40] Speaker 1: Cat's Eye. And she played me this track, Gnarly, and
[15:43] Speaker 1: the track is sick.
[15:45] Speaker 5: Okay.
[15:45] Speaker 1: No, no, no, it's sick. I love it.
[15:47] Speaker 4: And like the mom is like, oh my God, this song.
[15:49] Speaker 4: And I generally, even as a muse, I'm like, that's
[15:51] Speaker 4: really a dope track. Yeah, it's dope, dope, dope.
[15:54] Speaker 1: All right.
[15:55] Speaker 3: And you said something in one of the interviews that
[15:59] Speaker 3: The first album that TKZ did It flopped, right? And
[16:02] Speaker 3: then you guys went into the clubbing scene You went
[16:04] Speaker 3: into the party scene To create music like this That
[16:06] Speaker 3: moves us If this plays on a dance floor Hit
[16:11] Speaker 3: him with the shoulder Hit him with the shoulder Hit
[16:15] Speaker 3: him with the shoulder But now you're turning 50 Where
[16:19] Speaker 3: do you go to test this out? Because when you
[16:21] Speaker 3: were 18 It's easy for you to go to clubs
[16:23] Speaker 3: To see what people are liking But where do you
[16:25] Speaker 3: go here?
[16:26] Speaker 4: I surround myself with music. That's what's the cool thing
[16:30] Speaker 4: about music. I mean, even as I say that, I mean,
[16:32] Speaker 4: look at Oskiro.
[16:33] Speaker 1: I care. Think of Oskiro. Of course.
[16:36] Speaker 4: Oskiro doesn't change because he's always surrounded by that energy.
[16:41] Speaker 4: And I really believe how you capture the essence is
[16:43] Speaker 4: being surrounded by that energy. I have tons of young people.
[16:47] Speaker 4: on socials. Ekotman, you're such an inspiration. Can we send
[16:51] Speaker 4: you some music? So it's always coming. And then because,
[16:54] Speaker 4: you know, innately I am a muso and then, you know,
[16:58] Speaker 4: obviously then you kind of go, you also need to
[17:00] Speaker 4: understand your context in which you make music. and the
[17:03] Speaker 4: sources that you kind of that that inspire you you
[17:06] Speaker 4: know so that's how I how I keep in touch
[17:09] Speaker 4: to To be realistic about you know.
[17:12] Speaker 1: Where where.
[17:15] Speaker 4: I'm at The albums coming out I had made a
[17:20] Speaker 4: promise to the fans that the album was coming out
[17:22] Speaker 4: on the 14th of October which is next week however
[17:27] Speaker 4: I've decided to pause the album for a very, very
[17:29] Speaker 4: good reason. Because the 14th of October next week is
[17:33] Speaker 4: Tukulo Magesh Shabalala's 50th birthday. I've made a tribute song
[17:38] Speaker 4: on the album. It's called Magesh is Beethoven. And Magesh
[17:42] Speaker 4: is the Beethoven of our generation. I've made a tribute song.
[17:47] Speaker 4: The album will be available. People will see the songs.
[17:50] Speaker 1: They will be.
[17:50] Speaker 4: Available on the 14th. But we're just dropping the Magesh
[17:54] Speaker 4: single next. on the 14th of October then the album
[17:57] Speaker 4: will come out on the 30th of October okay oh.
[17:59] Speaker 3: My word are you doing 30th and not 31st because
[18:02] Speaker 3: 31st is Halloween and we would have been like I
[18:06] Speaker 3: actually didn't realize that now now I'm.
[18:08] Speaker 1: Like I'm just I've just clocked it now as they
[18:11] Speaker 1: say you know.
[18:12] Speaker 3: Maybe let's do 31st. I don't know. What are you thinking?
[18:16] Speaker 1: Well, anyway.
[18:21] Speaker 2: 30th is a Friday. So Friday is when, you know,
[18:25] Speaker 2: it's the end of the week. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Friday.
[18:29] Speaker 1: That's why I picked today. I didn't think.
[18:32] Speaker 3: Take that with.
[18:32] Speaker 1: Keep talking back. Yeah, keep talking back. Thank you. Thank you.
[18:35] Speaker 2: Thank you.
[18:35] Speaker 1: We're actually having a listening session next week. On the 13th.
[18:40] Speaker 1: Are you around?
[18:41] Speaker 3: I am around.
[18:42] Speaker 1: Yes, I am. Please come. Where is it?
[18:44] Speaker 4: Khabar, where is it again?
[18:47] Speaker 3: You guys will decide.
[18:48] Speaker 4: It's at Bang & Olufsen. Bang & Olufsen is partnering
[18:51] Speaker 4: with us. We're actually at their warehouse.
[18:53] Speaker 1: Their team is... Don't say... Now 10,000 people are going
[18:56] Speaker 1: to rock up.
[18:56] Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
[18:56] Speaker 1: Eh, son. Okay.
[18:58] Speaker 2: Only come if you can afford Bang & Olufsen. There.
[19:01] Speaker 2: I've cut the guest list in half, my friend. Don't worry.
[19:04] Speaker 5: Wait.
[19:04] Speaker 3: This song, before we go, this song says 60-60. Is
[19:06] Speaker 3: that check a 60-60?
[19:07] Speaker 1: So, let me tell you the story around that.
[19:09] Speaker 6: Pam.
[19:10] Speaker 1: who's part of the arrows lives in Los Angeles now.
[19:13] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[19:14] Speaker 1: So we've been doing this transatlantic recording session. It's been
[19:17] Speaker 1: very interesting. And she came to visit her.
[19:19] Speaker 4: Family in December and Jan of 2025 going into 2026.
[19:26] Speaker 4: And we've been wanting to, we've been talking about this.
[19:27] Speaker 1: For a very long time. You know, we need to
[19:29] Speaker 1: do a song together, whatever.
[19:31] Speaker 4: And when she was here visiting her family in South Africa, she,
[19:35] Speaker 4: she would run out of bread and oats and whatever,
[19:37] Speaker 4: you know, And she said, oh, damn, Ma, I need
[19:39] Speaker 4: to go to the shop and buy, you know. And
[19:42] Speaker 4: she says, like, all her aunts and her mom would say, no,
[19:44] Speaker 4: don't worry, man, we'll just 60-60 it.
[19:45] Speaker 3: Okay.
[19:46] Speaker 4: You know, so when she went back overseas and she
[19:49] Speaker 4: was right. the 60-60 part and also the nostalgic South
[19:53] Speaker 4: African part was such a South.
[19:55] Speaker 1: African thing for her, you know.
[19:57] Speaker 4: And in the song, the song is actually a prayer
[19:59] Speaker 4: to the Lord, you know, and the Lord is saying,
[20:01] Speaker 4: you know, I'll be there like 60-60.
[20:02] Speaker 1: 60-60 Let me.
[20:03] Speaker 5: Be That's amazing.
[20:07] Speaker 3: In me Dude, the entire thing.
[20:11] Speaker 1: It sounds to me. It sounds to me.
[20:14] Speaker 3: The song, the album comes out on the 30th of October.
[20:17] Speaker 2: Yes.
[20:18] Speaker 3: On the 14th. 13th or 14th?
[20:20] Speaker 1: So 13th is the listening session.
[20:22] Speaker 3: 14th is.
[20:23] Speaker 4: 14th is Magash's birthday and we're dropping the single titled
[20:26] Speaker 4: Magash is Beethoven.
[20:27] Speaker 3: But this is the tune. This is the song for summer.
[20:30] Speaker 3: Everybody needs somebody. Ladies and gentlemen.
[20:32] Speaker 1: He is back. Hit him.
[20:42] Speaker 3: With the shoulder. Hit him.
[20:45] Speaker 1: With the shoulder. What?
[20:52] Speaker 3: Back to making your morning.
[20:54] Speaker 1: And the club.
[20:56] Speaker 3: I love this show.
