How do you redeem screen time and turn everyday media into a meaningful tool for your family’s spiritual growth? This week, Jess Wolstenholm—VP of Education and Research at Minno and veteran of 25 years in children’s ministry—joins Jaime for an encouraging conversation on helping kids and families experience Jesus every day, both on and off screens. In this episode, Jess shares the heart behind Minno, a Christian children’s streaming platform featuring everything from beloved classics like VeggieTales to high-quality originals crafted by creatives from Disney and Pixar, including Young David, God’s Greenhouse, and Micah. Jess also dives into her work as the executive producer and editor of the Laugh and Grow Bible for Kids animated series and storybook Bibles, including their newest release, The Laugh and Grow Bible for Kids: Jesus Stories. She explains how to teach foundational theology to young, concrete thinkers without watering down the truth of the Gospel. Jess also tackles the intimidation many parents and grandparents feel when trying to disciple their kids at home, offering a refreshing look at why modeling "intellectual humility" and curiosity is far more powerful than having all the answers. You’ll walk away with practical, pressure-free ideas for balancing your family’s "media diet" and using simple, everyday moments as a springboard for organic conversations about faith. [0:02] Speaker 1: Life Audio.
[0:05] Speaker 2: Hi there, and welcome to the Praying Christian Women podcast.
[0:08] Speaker 2: I'm Jamie Hampton, and today I get to be here
[0:11] Speaker 2: with Jess Wollstenholm, the VP of Education and Research at Minnow,
[0:16] Speaker 2: which is a children's media company helping kids and families
[0:19] Speaker 2: experience Jesus every day, and they just happen to be
[0:22] Speaker 2: our sponsor for today's episode. Jess is the executive producer
[0:26] Speaker 2: and editor of the Laugh and Grow Bible animated series
[0:29] Speaker 2: and Bible. And after 25 years in children's ministry, she's
[0:33] Speaker 2: now developing discipleship content that meets kids where they are
[0:36] Speaker 2: at every age and stage. And Jess, thank you for
[0:39] Speaker 2: being here. I know we have a lot of listeners
[0:40] Speaker 2: who are parents, grandparents, spiritual parents who are going to
[0:44] Speaker 2: just really benefit from learning more about Minnow. So thanks
[0:48] Speaker 2: for joining us.
[0:49] Speaker 3: Thanks for having me. It's so fun to be here
[0:50] Speaker 3: with you, Jamie.
[0:52] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[0:52] Speaker 2: Well, before we get started, we ask all of our guests,
[0:55] Speaker 2: what is your favorite prayer closet? So that's an air quote.
[0:58] Speaker 2: Just anywhere you go to meet with God.
[1:01] Speaker 3: You know, honestly, my favorite place is my car because
[1:04] Speaker 3: I have a really long commute to work. And I
[1:08] Speaker 3: love to listen to worship music. I love to listen
[1:10] Speaker 3: to books and podcasts and all kinds of things on
[1:12] Speaker 3: that commute. But more than anything, I love to just pray.
[1:15] Speaker 3: It's like the best focus time that I have. Nobody's
[1:18] Speaker 3: interrupting or asking me, you know, for anything. And I can't,
[1:22] Speaker 3: you know, be tempted to look at a to-do list
[1:24] Speaker 3: or any of those things. So I love, love my
[1:26] Speaker 3: drive time. It's like the best time that I have
[1:30] Speaker 3: talking with God and just, you know, just thanking Him,
[1:33] Speaker 3: of course, for all of the amazing things that He
[1:36] Speaker 3: has blessed us with, but also just, you know, really
[1:39] Speaker 3: petitioning Him for my kids and my family and the
[1:42] Speaker 3: work that I get to do at Minnow. So that's
[1:45] Speaker 3: my favorite place.
[1:45] Speaker 1: It's my car.
[1:46] Speaker 3: It's a holy place for me.
[1:48] Speaker 1: I love that. I can totally relate.
[1:50] Speaker 2: And I have older kids now, but when they were little,
[1:53] Speaker 2: there's something really great about the kids are strapped in.
[1:56] Speaker 1: You know where they are. They're safe.
[1:58] Speaker 2: They're not, you know, maybe they're doing their own thing
[2:00] Speaker 2: in the back seat and you can just do your
[2:03] Speaker 2: thing and pray. And I'm sure our listeners are tired
[2:06] Speaker 2: of hearing this, but it's a really funny story. When
[2:08] Speaker 2: I was driving one time and I had dropped off
[2:10] Speaker 2: our oldest, and I think I only had our second
[2:13] Speaker 2: at the time, and he was little and he's in
[2:15] Speaker 2: a car seat and minding his business. And I started
[2:18] Speaker 2: praying out loud, which I love praying out loud. You
[2:22] Speaker 2: can look a little weird, but you're in your car.
[2:24] Speaker 2: For all they know, you're on speaker with someone talking
[2:27] Speaker 2: on the phone. So I just went ahead and I
[2:30] Speaker 2: didn't think he would really notice. And all of a
[2:31] Speaker 2: sudden I hear, Mommy, who are you talking to? And
[2:35] Speaker 2: I was like, well, I took the opportunity to tell
[2:38] Speaker 2: him I'm talking to God.
[2:40] Speaker 1: It might seem weird, but you can do it too.
[2:42] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[2:43] Speaker 3: That's amazing. What an amazing teaching moment, you know, and
[2:46] Speaker 3: modeling moment where he's seeing you do that. And that's
[2:49] Speaker 3: really cool. He's going to remember that forever. I love it.
[2:52] Speaker 2: Actually, I need to ask him because it just occurred
[2:55] Speaker 2: to me, like, I have never brought that up with.
[2:57] Speaker 1: Him since he's gotten older.
[2:59] Speaker 2: So I'll have to see, you know, if he remembers that.
[3:03] Speaker 3: If he remembers, yeah. I bet it made an impact.
[3:05] Speaker 1: That's awesome. So cool. Well, for our.
[3:08] Speaker 2: Listeners who are not familiar with Minnow, can you just
[3:11] Speaker 2: kind of give us a brief overview?
[3:13] Speaker 1: What is it? And share the heart behind the mission
[3:16] Speaker 1: of Minnow.
[3:16] Speaker 3: Yeah. Minnow is a Christian children's media company. And our vision,
[3:22] Speaker 3: and we say we exist to help kids and families
[3:25] Speaker 3: experience Jesus every day on and off screens. So we
[3:29] Speaker 3: know that screens really aren't going away. And it's a
[3:31] Speaker 3: big battle for parents. And not that we want to,
[3:35] Speaker 3: you know, enable that or, you know, we know that
[3:38] Speaker 3: there needs to be a balance, but we also want
[3:41] Speaker 3: to give parents a way to redeem screens and to
[3:44] Speaker 3: really use that tool for good. And so Minnow is
[3:47] Speaker 3: a streaming video platform. Think like a Netflix or Disney Plus,
[3:52] Speaker 3: but for Christian kids and families. So we have over
[3:55] Speaker 3: 200 shows, thousands of episodes. We have classics like VeggieTales
[4:00] Speaker 3: and things you might've grown up on. but also we're
[4:03] Speaker 3: developing new original content. So we have the Laugh and
[4:06] Speaker 3: Grow Bible for Kids series, which I get to be
[4:10] Speaker 3: the executive producer on. That is an animated series that
[4:13] Speaker 3: follows the stories in our storybook Bible that we also
[4:17] Speaker 3: have published. And we have the Young David series, which
[4:21] Speaker 3: is a Disney quality animated series about the life of
[4:25] Speaker 3: young David. And so we are really just trying to
[4:28] Speaker 3: give Christian Kids and Families, a great place to experience
[4:32] Speaker 3: stories because kids learn so well through stories. We want
[4:36] Speaker 3: them to learn the Bible through these stories, to experience Jesus,
[4:40] Speaker 3: to get to know Him. It can be a really
[4:43] Speaker 3: great discipleship tool for families because you get to show
[4:46] Speaker 3: your kids kind of these Bible stories in age-appropriate ways,
[4:51] Speaker 3: very theologically sound, but age-appropriate ways. And then hopefully that
[4:55] Speaker 3: sparks some off-screen conversation. So We hope that we're giving
[5:00] Speaker 3: parents a tool that helps them begin to have these
[5:03] Speaker 3: conversations with their kids around media that's fun and engaging,
[5:07] Speaker 3: but also around really important stories of the Bible and
[5:11] Speaker 3: discipleship concepts and things that can help them grow their faith.
[5:15] Speaker 1: I love that.
[5:16] Speaker 2: And, you know, it's funny, but I have had some
[5:20] Speaker 2: of my most profound realizations about my faith and about
[5:24] Speaker 2: the Bible through children's Bible stuff and children's shows or
[5:28] Speaker 2: through teaching children's ministry. Because I think for some people,
[5:32] Speaker 2: maybe that's not the case. I just know I grew
[5:34] Speaker 2: up in the church. I take a lot of Bible
[5:37] Speaker 2: stories for granted, forget maybe all of the things involved.
[5:42] Speaker 2: And I don't know, there's just something about bringing it
[5:45] Speaker 2: back to a kid's level that I think people other
[5:49] Speaker 2: than kids are gonna really benefit. And like you said,
[5:51] Speaker 2: if you're afraid that you don't know enough about the
[5:54] Speaker 2: Bible to have good conversations with your kids, There's no
[5:56] Speaker 2: better way than to watch a biblically sound show with
[6:00] Speaker 2: your kid and to kind of as a refresher, or
[6:03] Speaker 2: maybe you're hearing it for the first time and you're
[6:06] Speaker 2: able to kind of have springboard conversations about it.
[6:10] Speaker 3: Yeah, we hear that from parents all the time. They say, wow,
[6:14] Speaker 3: I am so excited what my child is learning through this,
[6:17] Speaker 3: but I'm also really excited about what I am learning or,
[6:21] Speaker 3: you know, seeing the Bible in a new way because
[6:24] Speaker 3: they're You know, there's a reason why Jesus told us
[6:27] Speaker 3: to become like little children and to have childlike faith.
[6:31] Speaker 3: And I think, you know, for some of us, some
[6:33] Speaker 3: of the concepts in the Bible are really hard to understand.
[6:36] Speaker 3: And that's something we actually say over and over again
[6:38] Speaker 3: in the Laugh and Grow Bible series. We say, you know,
[6:42] Speaker 3: we have kids that are interacting with the narrator asking
[6:45] Speaker 3: questions because we really want to model question asking around faith.
[6:49] Speaker 3: And the narrator says, some things about the Bible are
[6:52] Speaker 3: hard to understand, even for grownups. And nothing is more
[6:56] Speaker 3: true than that. And so, you know, if we can
[6:59] Speaker 3: learn together as a family, I think that's really powerful.
[7:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely. Do you have other.
[7:06] Speaker 2: So I'll say, other than the project you're working on
[7:09] Speaker 2: with the Laugh and Grow Bible, do you have a
[7:11] Speaker 2: favorite show on Minnow?
[7:14] Speaker 3: Well, aside from... The Laughing Girl Bible, which we talked about.
[7:18] Speaker 3: And I mentioned The Young David because the animation quality
[7:21] Speaker 3: is absolutely lovely. And that was kind of a prequel
[7:25] Speaker 3: to the film that came out this past year, The
[7:27] Speaker 3: David Film. Oh, wow. Yeah, those are linked together. We
[7:32] Speaker 3: did those episodes as kind of a prequel for the film.
[7:35] Speaker 3: Other than that, one of my favorites is called God's Greenhouse.
[7:39] Speaker 3: It's a newer show that we have for preschoolers. And
[7:42] Speaker 3: so it's kind of our answer to a, you know,
[7:46] Speaker 3: Miss Rachel, if you're familiar on YouTube, that some kids,
[7:50] Speaker 3: you know, that became really popular as far as an
[7:52] Speaker 3: educational show with a live action host where it's a
[7:55] Speaker 3: young woman. And she is just incredibly talented and loves
[8:00] Speaker 3: Jesus and the Word of God so much that we
[8:03] Speaker 3: love offering this kind of alternative that will help kids
[8:07] Speaker 3: to learn, but to learn Bible stories. She covers some
[8:11] Speaker 3: colors and numbers and things like that. But it's really
[8:14] Speaker 3: more about Bible stories and about biblical truths and imagination
[8:18] Speaker 3: and then songs. You know, each episode has a song,
[8:20] Speaker 3: a preschool song. One thing I love about the God's
[8:23] Speaker 3: Greenhouse show, too, is it's very homegrown. So it's very crafty.
[8:28] Speaker 3: Like a lot of the props and things she uses
[8:31] Speaker 3: are just so sweet and delightful. And she has a
[8:35] Speaker 3: couple of very special stuffies that she uses as puppets,
[8:39] Speaker 3: but she kind of uses them like actual stuffies. So
[8:43] Speaker 3: it's really helping kids, you know, kind of understand how
[8:47] Speaker 3: to play out maybe the Bible story. So her and
[8:49] Speaker 3: her little stuffies play out the Bible story. And so
[8:52] Speaker 3: we really want to model kids engaging with Bible stories
[8:56] Speaker 3: in a playful way. And so we've, you know, heard
[8:58] Speaker 3: lots of stories from parents of kids that love that show,
[9:02] Speaker 3: and they're kind of taking their stuffies and they're like
[9:04] Speaker 3: playing out the Bible story. And so When we can
[9:07] Speaker 3: get kids to engage with the Bible in that way,
[9:10] Speaker 3: I think it really helps it stick for them. So
[9:13] Speaker 3: that's one of my favorites.
[9:15] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting.
[9:16] Speaker 2: I've noticed as technology has ramped up so much, especially
[9:20] Speaker 2: with younger kids, play is falling by the wayside. And
[9:25] Speaker 2: so if they can be consuming content that's modeling that
[9:30] Speaker 2: for them, that's kind of like a double bonus that
[9:33] Speaker 2: it's positive content. But they're not just sitting there absorbing
[9:37] Speaker 2: images on a screen. They're seeing like, hey, when you're
[9:40] Speaker 2: not on your screen, this is kind of modeling play
[9:44] Speaker 2: and modeling that reinforcement of the Bible stories.
[9:48] Speaker 1: That's very cool.
[10:02] Speaker 2: Why do you think it's important for parents to be
[10:05] Speaker 2: intentional about the things their kids are consuming?
[10:10] Speaker 3: Yeah, I like to think of it, of media as
[10:14] Speaker 3: like a diet, as nutrition, you know, and what is
[10:17] Speaker 3: this piece of media, you know, adding to my kids'
[10:23] Speaker 3: balanced diet of inputs or of information that they're coming across.
[10:29] Speaker 3: And I really think it's important to look at that
[10:33] Speaker 3: like you would look at their diet because parents are,
[10:36] Speaker 3: you know, want to make sure you get enough vegetables
[10:38] Speaker 3: and you get enough protein. And yes, you can have
[10:40] Speaker 3: some sweets, but, you know, you don't want to have
[10:42] Speaker 3: more sweets than you have the good stuff. And so
[10:45] Speaker 3: I always like to say that with my kids, too.
[10:47] Speaker 3: You know, they're older now and they've kind of earned that,
[10:50] Speaker 3: you know, trust factor. I'm helping them discern what's good
[10:53] Speaker 3: and what's not good. And so they may choose, you know,
[10:57] Speaker 3: my son might choose a little more YouTube than I'd like,
[10:59] Speaker 3: but I will have a conversation to say, hey, let's
[11:02] Speaker 3: balance those inputs. Or when they were younger, I did
[11:05] Speaker 3: this a lot. Hey, let's balance the inputs and make
[11:07] Speaker 3: sure that there's some goodness mixed in there. Not that
[11:10] Speaker 3: anything they're watching is horrible or anything like that, but
[11:13] Speaker 3: it might be more like those sweets, empty calories, right?
[11:16] Speaker 3: So it's not really do anything. It's brain rot. It's
[11:18] Speaker 3: whatever you want to call it. But let's really balance
[11:21] Speaker 3: that with some really good, rich media. And so it's
[11:25] Speaker 3: fine to watch super fun, mindless things. Like one of
[11:29] Speaker 3: our family's favorites when my kids were little was America's
[11:32] Speaker 3: Funniest Home Videos because we would just laugh and laughter
[11:35] Speaker 3: is very valuable too. And so that's probably a little
[11:38] Speaker 3: more valuable than some things. But It's also important to
[11:41] Speaker 3: kind of add the good stuff, you know, good stories
[11:44] Speaker 3: with good relationships that are modeling good relationships that they're learning,
[11:48] Speaker 3: you know, and on Minnow, we have mostly explicitly biblical content,
[11:54] Speaker 3: Bible stories and things like that. But we also have
[11:57] Speaker 3: a good mix of just educational content that we have
[12:00] Speaker 3: highly vetted. So letters and numbers and all the other
[12:02] Speaker 3: good things you want your kids to watch. So You know,
[12:05] Speaker 3: I look at the Bible as one of those subject areas.
[12:08] Speaker 3: Like if you're looking at a child's education, you want
[12:12] Speaker 3: them to have math and science and English in those
[12:15] Speaker 3: subject areas. And for us as believers, the Bible is
[12:18] Speaker 3: one of those. And it's just as important, if not
[12:21] Speaker 3: more important for us, for them to be learning that
[12:24] Speaker 3: and understanding it. And so it can be really overwhelming
[12:27] Speaker 3: because kids want to watch what their friends are watching
[12:30] Speaker 3: or what they see or hear about what they see
[12:32] Speaker 3: at the toy store. They know it's a show. They
[12:34] Speaker 3: want to watch it. And that's understandable, you know, but
[12:38] Speaker 3: we want to give them alternatives that not only are
[12:42] Speaker 3: teaching those good things, but are doing it in a
[12:44] Speaker 3: way that's age appropriate and really fun because they shouldn't
[12:47] Speaker 3: have to settle. We shouldn't say, no, no, you can't
[12:49] Speaker 3: watch that fun thing. You have to watch this boring
[12:51] Speaker 3: thing instead because it's about the Bible. It should be
[12:54] Speaker 3: just as good, if not better. And that's what we're,
[12:58] Speaker 3: that's our mission here at Minnow is to make that
[13:00] Speaker 3: content just as good or better, actually better because Jesus,
[13:03] Speaker 3: we always say Jesus deserves better.
[13:05] Speaker 1: That's so good.
[13:06] Speaker 2: So yeah, because it's not like, I know with a
[13:09] Speaker 2: lot of Christian content, people, whether it's music, whether it's whatever,
[13:14] Speaker 2: I remember back in the day, dating myself, you know,
[13:17] Speaker 2: going to find cassette tapes in the record store. And
[13:21] Speaker 2: they would have, if you liked so-and-so, you'll like Lila Paris.
[13:24] Speaker 2: It's like a designer imposter thing. And what I love
[13:28] Speaker 2: and what I'm seeing in our, you know, a little
[13:31] Speaker 2: bit more recently in Christian content is, We're not the imposter.
[13:36] Speaker 1: We're going to set the standard. And I think that's great.
[13:39] Speaker 2: And it sounds like that's what you're doing with, you know,
[13:42] Speaker 2: the animation, with the content, with the, you know, everything
[13:46] Speaker 2: with Minnow.
[13:47] Speaker 1: So that's pretty cool.
[13:49] Speaker 3: I love that. We don't want it to be the
[13:50] Speaker 3: designer imposter. And what's been amazing for Minnow is once
[13:54] Speaker 3: we kind of put it out there and we started
[13:56] Speaker 3: creating originals, you cannot believe how many believers showed up.
[14:02] Speaker 3: that worked at Disney, that worked at Pixar, that worked
[14:04] Speaker 3: at these companies that are like, they have that talent,
[14:08] Speaker 3: they have that experience, the expertise, but they've never been
[14:12] Speaker 3: able to make things for the kingdom of God. And
[14:15] Speaker 3: so one of the most exciting things for us at
[14:17] Speaker 3: Minnow is that we are now giving creatives that know
[14:20] Speaker 3: Jesus and want to serve Jesus with their gifts an
[14:23] Speaker 3: outlet to be able to create for the kingdom of God,
[14:26] Speaker 3: which is super exciting.
[14:28] Speaker 1: That is so exciting. Wow, that's amazing.
[14:32] Speaker 2: I want to back up and talk about the Laugh
[14:34] Speaker 2: and Grow Bible series. So it says that you're the
[14:37] Speaker 2: producer and editor of the series and Bible. So is
[14:41] Speaker 2: there a physical Bible that goes along with the series
[14:44] Speaker 2: that parents can get?
[14:45] Speaker 1: Okay. Tell us about that too. Yeah.
[14:47] Speaker 3: There's actually two physical Bibles now. So the original Laugh
[14:50] Speaker 3: and Grow Bible for Kids came out several years ago.
[14:53] Speaker 3: It is a comprehensive overview of the big bible narrative
[14:58] Speaker 3: from genesis to revelation really taking the main stories of
[15:02] Speaker 3: 52 stories we did that purposefully so there's one story
[15:05] Speaker 3: a week for families to engage with or children's ministry
[15:09] Speaker 3: leaders too so there's 52 stories from genesis to revelation
[15:13] Speaker 3: and that covered the big overview and god's big story
[15:17] Speaker 3: and you know the gospel creation the fall redemption and
[15:21] Speaker 3: restoration and But what we found is, oh, and I'll
[15:24] Speaker 3: back up and say we have animated that entire Bible.
[15:28] Speaker 3: So we have episodes. Each story in the Bible has
[15:31] Speaker 3: an episode so that kids can watch it and read it,
[15:33] Speaker 3: which really reinforces it for them. But what we found
[15:37] Speaker 3: is we didn't get to go too deep into the
[15:39] Speaker 3: Gospels to the stories of Jesus because we were trying
[15:42] Speaker 3: to cover the entire Bible. So just last week, our
[15:45] Speaker 3: second Bible called the Laugh and Grow Bible for Kids
[15:48] Speaker 3: Jesus Stories came out. And it is a deep dive
[15:51] Speaker 3: into the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. So we
[15:54] Speaker 3: cover parables, miracles, Jesus' life, and His teachings. We really
[15:59] Speaker 3: focused on His relationships with people and how He loved
[16:02] Speaker 3: people and why He came and what He did for us.
[16:06] Speaker 3: And so that came out just a week ago. So
[16:09] Speaker 3: that's exciting. So now there's two volumes in the Bible
[16:11] Speaker 3: that really covers it from Genesis to Revelation. And then
[16:15] Speaker 3: we're in the process of animating those Jesus stories now.
[16:19] Speaker 3: So we have some available already on Minnow. We've never
[16:23] Speaker 3: released them simultaneously. So that's really fun to be able
[16:25] Speaker 3: to have the Bible and the episodes out at the
[16:27] Speaker 3: same time.
[16:28] Speaker 1: That is so neat. I wish my kids were younger.
[16:31] Speaker 3: I know, same. Mine are too old for it now, too.
[16:33] Speaker 1: Right? That is so neat.
[16:35] Speaker 3: And I wish it was there. That's why we created it.
[16:37] Speaker 3: You know, some of us were like, I wish my
[16:38] Speaker 3: kids had this. And, you know, I had them sit
[16:42] Speaker 3: at the table even when they were into their early
[16:44] Speaker 3: teen years and read those Bible stories with me. because one,
[16:48] Speaker 3: they were willing to do it because mom helped make it.
[16:50] Speaker 3: And so, you know, they were open, but it really
[16:53] Speaker 3: did help them understand the Bible stories because we take
[16:57] Speaker 3: great care in making sure we're using the right language.
[17:01] Speaker 3: So every story, every script for the Laugh and Grow
[17:04] Speaker 3: Bible and the Jesus stories, we are very careful about
[17:08] Speaker 3: the language we use. We do not want to water
[17:10] Speaker 3: down the truth. We do not want to water down
[17:12] Speaker 3: the gospel. We talk about sin. We talk about needing
[17:16] Speaker 3: a Savior. We talk about all of the foundations of
[17:20] Speaker 3: our Christian faith, we just do it in a way
[17:22] Speaker 3: that really helps kids understand it. So for instance, when
[17:26] Speaker 3: we define the word sin, a lot of times we
[17:29] Speaker 3: will define the word sin in the church as, you know,
[17:33] Speaker 3: missing the mark. It's when we mess up, you know,
[17:35] Speaker 3: those kinds of things. And we do say sin separates
[17:38] Speaker 3: us from God, which is all true. But for a
[17:41] Speaker 3: young child who's a concrete thinker, if you say in
[17:45] Speaker 3: one conversation that sin separates you from God, In the
[17:47] Speaker 3: next conversation, you say, God is always with you. They
[17:51] Speaker 3: can't understand. They can't reconcile those two things. And so
[17:55] Speaker 3: we're not trying to redefine sin. We're trying to use
[17:58] Speaker 3: language that will meet.
[18:00] Speaker 1: A child where they are.
[18:02] Speaker 3: So our definition of sin in the Laugh and Grow
[18:04] Speaker 3: Bible is sin is when we choose our own way
[18:07] Speaker 3: instead of God's way. And because we choose our own way,
[18:11] Speaker 3: we can't be close to God because we turned away
[18:14] Speaker 3: from him. And so that gives them a little bit
[18:17] Speaker 3: more concrete language that helps them understand what sin does
[18:20] Speaker 3: and how it affects our lives without them going, wait
[18:24] Speaker 3: a second, I thought you said God's always with me,
[18:26] Speaker 3: but now you're saying I'm separated from him. So that's
[18:30] Speaker 3: just an example of how we have really tried to
[18:34] Speaker 3: be purposeful in all the language that we use in
[18:37] Speaker 3: this series to really make it kid appropriate.
[18:40] Speaker 2: What would you say are the age ranges that you
[18:43] Speaker 2: would recommend minnow for?
[18:45] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[18:45] Speaker 3: So minnows, we say ages two to 10. Um, we
[18:49] Speaker 3: have a lot of shows for the preschool and what
[18:52] Speaker 3: we call bridge age. So up to age about seven, eight,
[18:55] Speaker 3: we have, um, more shows and growing on the kind
[18:58] Speaker 3: of six to nine, six to 10 age range. Um,
[19:02] Speaker 3: I would, yeah, those are the two main age groups
[19:05] Speaker 3: because there is a big difference, right. Between a, a
[19:08] Speaker 3: four-year-old and an eight-year-old. And so, um, although the physical
[19:14] Speaker 3: Bible says four to eight, and that's kind of a
[19:16] Speaker 3: traditional Bible storybook age range. And I will say, kids
[19:20] Speaker 3: on both ends of the spectrum are really engaged with it.
[19:23] Speaker 3: The show, because of the animation, skews a little young,
[19:27] Speaker 3: but then we have shows for core elementary age kids.
[19:30] Speaker 3: We have a show called Micah, and it's all about
[19:33] Speaker 3: a fifth grade boy and his friends and kind of
[19:35] Speaker 3: the crazy zany adventures they have in elementary school and
[19:39] Speaker 3: how really they incorporate their faith into their everyday problems
[19:43] Speaker 3: that they're dealing with as kids. And it really helps kids,
[19:47] Speaker 3: you know, from modeling, hey, how do I walk this
[19:50] Speaker 3: out as a person of faith if I'm dealing with,
[19:54] Speaker 3: you know, bullies or, you know, getting a bad grade
[19:56] Speaker 3: on a test or real things that kids are dealing with.
[19:59] Speaker 3: So we do have specific shows for each age group.
[20:03] Speaker 1: That's great.
[20:04] Speaker 2: So in my own faith, I grew up in the church,
[20:07] Speaker 2: but There were two different kind of turning points for
[20:11] Speaker 2: me that helped me move from like, okay, I know
[20:15] Speaker 2: the Bible stories into actually like having a desire to
[20:19] Speaker 2: live for the Lord. And one of them was a
[20:22] Speaker 2: series of books. I can't remember what they were, but
[20:25] Speaker 2: it was my grandmother had given them.
[20:27] Speaker 1: To me and it was for kind of tweens.
[20:29] Speaker 2: And it was illustrating this Christian girl going through her
[20:34] Speaker 2: daily life, you know, and kind of experiencing the day-to-day things.
[20:38] Speaker 2: and modeling in the book kind of how she struggled
[20:41] Speaker 2: with things.
[20:41] Speaker 1: And then there was another one.
[20:43] Speaker 2: It was like a see you at the pole book
[20:45] Speaker 2: that I remember reading that kind of modeled like this
[20:49] Speaker 2: group of high school kids who had this desire to
[20:53] Speaker 2: live out the, you know, live out their faith in
[20:56] Speaker 2: a secular environment.
[20:59] Speaker 1: So I could really see that show.
[21:01] Speaker 2: Micah sounds like it could be a really powerful tool
[21:05] Speaker 2: to just, expose kids to like, this is what it
[21:08] Speaker 2: looks like.
[21:08] Speaker 1: This is what it could look like for you.
[21:10] Speaker 2: Even if your life doesn't look like this now, this
[21:12] Speaker 2: is what it could be if you pursue God, if you,
[21:15] Speaker 2: you know, so that's.
[21:17] Speaker 3: Yeah. There's a lot of talk about representation in media
[21:19] Speaker 3: and we feel like Christian kids need to be represented
[21:24] Speaker 3: too on screen. They need to see their faith represented
[21:26] Speaker 3: on screen. They need to see It needs to be normalized,
[21:29] Speaker 3: you know, for you to be approaching your everyday life through.
[21:34] Speaker 1: A biblical worldview.
[21:35] Speaker 3: And so that's one of the things we're really trying
[21:37] Speaker 3: to do for the older kids on Minnow is helping
[21:40] Speaker 3: them understand, what does it mean to live out my
[21:42] Speaker 3: faith in the real world? It's very important for kids
[21:46] Speaker 3: to have that. Yeah.
[22:00] Speaker 2: Well, I remember being in college watching The Veggie Tales.
[22:03] Speaker 2: So really, you know, this could be for anybody.
[22:05] Speaker 1: Well, you're never too old.
[22:05] Speaker 3: For Veggie Tales.
[22:06] Speaker 1: That's true. You're never too old for Veggie Tales. That's true.
[22:09] Speaker 3: That's so true.
[22:10] Speaker 1: Love it.
[22:11] Speaker 2: Well, for the parent listening who is just thinking, oh,
[22:15] Speaker 2: this would be great. I'm struggling, which I think we
[22:18] Speaker 2: all as parents second guess ourselves and think I could
[22:21] Speaker 2: be doing more to point my kid to the Lord.
[22:24] Speaker 2: But just don't know exactly other than just putting a
[22:29] Speaker 2: show in front of them how to like springboard off
[22:32] Speaker 2: of a show or a cartoon or a bible story
[22:36] Speaker 2: or whatever into discipleship one-on-one as a parent kind of
[22:41] Speaker 2: turning that into opportunities for conversations outside of the screens
[22:46] Speaker 2: can you give us some ideas or kind of paint
[22:49] Speaker 2: a picture of what that could look like for.
[22:51] Speaker 3: Parents absolutely yeah uh One of the things that we
[22:55] Speaker 3: offer with Minnow, and I think this kind of sets
[22:58] Speaker 3: us apart from other Christian streaming services for kids, is
[23:02] Speaker 3: we offer a lot of offscreen resources. So that's why
[23:05] Speaker 3: we have the Bible and the show. We have, Micah
[23:08] Speaker 3: has books to go along with it that have like
[23:10] Speaker 3: some discussion questions in it. We want to give parents
[23:13] Speaker 3: that springboard, like you said, because so many are intimidated
[23:16] Speaker 3: and I get it. Like it can be very intimidating
[23:19] Speaker 3: to lead these conversations. If you feel like you're still
[23:21] Speaker 3: growing in your faith, you're not quite there yet, I
[23:23] Speaker 3: think we as parents feel like we have to like
[23:26] Speaker 3: master something before we can teach our kids. And I
[23:29] Speaker 3: don't think that that is the truth. I think that
[23:32] Speaker 3: the truth is, is that God desires for us to
[23:35] Speaker 3: incorporate faith building and faith formation into our everyday lives.
[23:40] Speaker 3: And he doesn't expect that to be a parent only
[23:45] Speaker 3: instilling all of their wisdom, although there are times of
[23:48] Speaker 3: that into their child, but that we're growing together. And
[23:52] Speaker 3: so as a child, as you wrestle with something, maybe
[23:56] Speaker 3: allowing your child to see that. Or when your child
[23:58] Speaker 3: wrestles with something, maybe being able to say, I'm not
[24:01] Speaker 3: sure how about that. Let's find out together. And just
[24:05] Speaker 3: acknowledging it's called intellectual humility. There's research out there that
[24:09] Speaker 3: shows that kids learn better when a teacher or a
[24:14] Speaker 3: mentor exemplifies intellectual humility. So I want to first say,
[24:18] Speaker 3: take the pressure off because there's no expectation for you
[24:21] Speaker 3: to have arrived in order for you to disciple your child.
[24:25] Speaker 3: But in the moment, Minnow does offer, we do have
[24:27] Speaker 3: discussion guides for a lot of our shows that are
[24:30] Speaker 3: in our resource center and they're all free. We give
[24:33] Speaker 3: those to our members because we want to give you
[24:35] Speaker 3: that launching off point. We want to give you those questions.
[24:38] Speaker 3: At the end of every story in the Laugh and
[24:39] Speaker 3: Go Bible, there's a couple of questions and a prayer
[24:42] Speaker 3: so that you can engage that conversation without feeling that pressure.
[24:46] Speaker 3: And I would just say the most important thing is
[24:49] Speaker 3: to remain curious and to model curiosity and to be
[24:52] Speaker 3: able to say to your child, you know, simple questions like,
[24:56] Speaker 3: what do you think Jesus was trying to say in
[24:58] Speaker 3: that story? Or how do you think someone was feeling
[25:01] Speaker 3: in that story? Any simple little question to springboard the
[25:06] Speaker 3: conversation and you will be shocked at how kids just
[25:08] Speaker 3: take it and run with it because they are so curious.
[25:11] Speaker 3: And so even if you don't have the words, they'll
[25:14] Speaker 3: have the words. And then you just kind of follow
[25:17] Speaker 3: their lead. And it's okay to allow their curiosity to
[25:21] Speaker 3: take the lead and then you just help them navigate it.
[25:24] Speaker 3: So I would say, keep it simple. It is not,
[25:27] Speaker 3: you know, it doesn't need to seem like you are
[25:30] Speaker 3: a college professor that's teaching them theology and biblical studies.
[25:34] Speaker 3: You are just having organic, simple conversations with them. And
[25:39] Speaker 3: those are, I think, the most powerful. And then I
[25:41] Speaker 3: would say that It's a habit. It's a muscle that
[25:45] Speaker 3: I think we can develop, and it just takes some time.
[25:48] Speaker 3: But just developing the habit of turning everything you can
[25:53] Speaker 3: into a faith-building moment. And so, for instance, I was
[25:57] Speaker 3: driving my daughter back to campus. She's a freshman in college.
[26:00] Speaker 3: She's in college here. I was driving her back to
[26:02] Speaker 3: campus this morning because her car broke down. And she
[26:05] Speaker 3: was getting ready to meet with her advisor to go
[26:08] Speaker 3: ahead and pick classes for next semester. And she was
[26:11] Speaker 3: a little... stressed about it because when she registered over
[26:14] Speaker 3: the summer, all the classes were full and it was
[26:16] Speaker 3: just not as easy as she thought. It was just
[26:17] Speaker 3: kind of overwhelming. And I just felt prompted to say
[26:22] Speaker 3: to her in the car, she's walking me through, here's
[26:24] Speaker 3: what I'm going to talk to her about. Here's what
[26:26] Speaker 3: I want to take. And I just felt led to say, hey,
[26:29] Speaker 3: have you stopped and prayed about this? Because you know
[26:33] Speaker 3: that God cares about these little details. He cares about
[26:36] Speaker 3: what classes you take next semester. He cares about you
[26:39] Speaker 3: not being stressed about it. He cares about how the
[26:42] Speaker 3: rest of your college process plays out. So how about
[26:46] Speaker 3: we stop and pray about it? Very simple thing. I
[26:48] Speaker 3: didn't need to be the wisest person in the room.
[26:52] Speaker 3: I just needed to exercise that muscle that says, hey,
[26:55] Speaker 3: everything they're dealing with, everything they're talking about, find a
[26:58] Speaker 3: way to turn it back to God and their relationship
[27:00] Speaker 3: with God. And I hope that by us praying together
[27:04] Speaker 3: about it, the next time she goes to do something
[27:07] Speaker 3: that's overwhelming with college, she's like, oh yeah, I can
[27:09] Speaker 3: stop and talk to Jesus about this. And this is
[27:11] Speaker 3: something we've done most of her life, but she still
[27:14] Speaker 3: needs reminders, right? We all still need reminders. And so
[27:17] Speaker 3: little things like that, everyday moments where you just pause
[27:21] Speaker 3: and find a way to connect it to a faith-building moment,
[27:24] Speaker 3: what can they learn about God right now? And what
[27:26] Speaker 3: she could learn about God in that moment is He
[27:28] Speaker 3: cares about these little things, and so take.
[27:30] Speaker 1: It to Him.
[27:31] Speaker 3: So little things like that. I think can really take
[27:34] Speaker 3: the pressure off and just kind of make it more organic.
[27:37] Speaker 3: And again, it's not going to be comfortable overnight. It's
[27:40] Speaker 3: a muscle that we all have to develop and keep
[27:42] Speaker 3: working at.
[27:44] Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely.
[27:45] Speaker 2: And yeah, it doesn't matter how long we all need
[27:49] Speaker 2: some encouragement and some reminders, but yeah. Well, I love
[27:53] Speaker 2: that you have resources in addition to the shows.
[27:56] Speaker 1: That's amazing. That's, that is so helpful.
[27:59] Speaker 2: Do you have any favorite stories or testimonials from people
[28:03] Speaker 2: who have had success with just helping their kids grow
[28:07] Speaker 2: in their faith through Minnow?
[28:10] Speaker 3: Yeah, we hear from members every week, little stories here
[28:15] Speaker 3: and there. And most of the time, I had no
[28:18] Speaker 3: idea my four-year-old could say the fruit of the Spirit,
[28:21] Speaker 3: but they learned it from watching this show or this episode.
[28:25] Speaker 3: You know, my son has been running around playing the
[28:29] Speaker 3: Armor of God because there's an Armor of God series. Actually,
[28:31] Speaker 3: it's a Micah series about the Armor of God. And
[28:34] Speaker 3: he's been running around pretending to have the Armor of
[28:36] Speaker 3: God on, you know. And so we hear things like
[28:38] Speaker 3: that all the time. One of my favorites that I heard,
[28:42] Speaker 3: I'll tell you a specific story. I was at a
[28:44] Speaker 3: children's ministry conference last week, and one of the children's
[28:47] Speaker 3: ministry leaders came up to the table. She said, I
[28:50] Speaker 3: couldn't wait to tell you guys this story. I was
[28:52] Speaker 3: teaching my kids about, and these were kindergarten, first graders.
[28:56] Speaker 3: I was teaching them about the judges, about judges the
[29:00] Speaker 3: other day. And I asked the kids, hey, do you know,
[29:03] Speaker 3: does anybody know how many judges God sent to help Israel?
[29:06] Speaker 3: And a couple of kids raised their hand and tried
[29:08] Speaker 3: to guess and nobody was getting it right. And this
[29:10] Speaker 3: one little girl raised her hand and said, there were
[29:12] Speaker 3: 12 judges. And the teacher looked at her and said,
[29:16] Speaker 3: oh my goodness, that is right. How did you know that?
[29:18] Speaker 3: And she said, I watch Minnow. And the teacher was like,
[29:23] Speaker 3: oh my goodness, I can't believe it. So later on
[29:26] Speaker 3: in the lesson, after she was finished with the whole lesson,
[29:28] Speaker 3: the little girl goes up to her and she says,
[29:30] Speaker 3: maybe you should watch Minnow 2. Like it would help
[29:33] Speaker 3: her be a better teacher. But that is the absolute
[29:37] Speaker 3: best endorsement that we could get.
[29:39] Speaker 1: I was going to say. to say, that's like a commercial.
[29:41] Speaker 1: I mean, that's like you paid that kid to say that.
[29:44] Speaker 3: I know, I know, but we didn't. It was totally organic.
[29:49] Speaker 3: We do hear stories about that all the time. And
[29:52] Speaker 3: that is such a blessing to us. We are like,
[29:54] Speaker 3: thank you, Jesus, that you are moving in the hearts
[29:58] Speaker 3: of these kids and helping them to understand. Now, that's knowledge.
[30:02] Speaker 3: You know, I want her to have more than knowledge.
[30:04] Speaker 3: I want her to know Jesus. That's why we're so
[30:06] Speaker 3: excited about the Jesus stories, because it's so much more
[30:10] Speaker 3: than knowledge. We don't want them to just know the Bible.
[30:13] Speaker 3: We want them to experience Jesus every day. And so
[30:16] Speaker 3: hopefully that knowledge leads to her and her time with
[30:19] Speaker 3: Minnow leads her to understanding Jesus and to walking with him.
[30:23] Speaker 3: But it is fun to hear about kids because one
[30:26] Speaker 3: thing we know about kids is they love to know
[30:28] Speaker 3: more than you know. And so if we can teach
[30:31] Speaker 3: them little facts that make them feel confident and make
[30:34] Speaker 3: them feel excited about the Bible, then that's the beginning
[30:38] Speaker 3: of them and hopefully a lifelong relationship with God.
[30:41] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[30:42] Speaker 1: Well, you mentioned kind of the food analogy before.
[30:45] Speaker 2: And I've definitely noticed when my kids were younger, especially,
[30:49] Speaker 2: and incredibly impressionable, they still are. But it's almost like
[30:54] Speaker 2: what they consume on media kind of just comes right out.
[30:57] Speaker 2: They start talking like a certain person. And I can
[31:00] Speaker 2: remember just being like, they've been watching such and such
[31:04] Speaker 2: a show because that negative thing that I don't like
[31:06] Speaker 2: is coming out in them. And maybe we better limit that.
[31:10] Speaker 2: or a certain influencer on YouTube or something.
[31:13] Speaker 1: And this is the opposite.
[31:15] Speaker 2: It's like it's sowing good seeds that are coming out
[31:19] Speaker 2: in good ways.
[31:20] Speaker 1: And you can't go wrong there. That's a win-win.
[31:23] Speaker 3: That's what we hope. That's our prayer really every day.
[31:25] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[31:27] Speaker 2: Well, can you tell our listeners who at this point
[31:30] Speaker 2: are just obviously like, where do I find minnow? Tell
[31:34] Speaker 2: them where they can find minnow, where they can learn
[31:36] Speaker 2: more about it. and where they can connect with you
[31:38] Speaker 2: guys online and on social media.
[31:40] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[31:42] Speaker 3: So we are at gominno.com. It's G-O-M-I-N-N-O. So minno is
[31:46] Speaker 3: spelled M-I-N-N-O. It's actually the Anglican spelling of the Greek
[31:51] Speaker 3: word minno, which means to abide from John 15. And
[31:56] Speaker 3: that's our goal. That's our mission is to help kids
[31:58] Speaker 3: and families abide with Jesus through media. And so they
[32:02] Speaker 3: can find us at gominno.com. There they can sign up
[32:06] Speaker 3: for free trials. So you get to kind of try
[32:08] Speaker 3: things out and see if it's a right fit for
[32:12] Speaker 3: you and your family. And you can also find us
[32:16] Speaker 3: on YouTube. We have a very big YouTube channel where
[32:19] Speaker 3: we put all those Bible stories. So you can check
[32:21] Speaker 3: those out there as well if you want. And then
[32:25] Speaker 3: if you get tired of the ads, then you can
[32:27] Speaker 3: come on over to the Minnow app. We're on all

[33:08] Speaker 1: I love it. I love it.
[33:10] Speaker 2: Well, thank you so much for being here, for telling
[33:13] Speaker 2: us about it, for sharing about it and giving us
[33:16] Speaker 2: all the info. We like to close in prayer. So
[33:19] Speaker 2: how can I pray for you? It could be for Minnow.
[33:22] Speaker 2: It could be for personal, whatever. We just like to
[33:25] Speaker 2: leave you with a prayer. I appreciate it.
[33:28] Speaker 3: Gosh, I would love prayer for just, continued wisdom and
[33:32] Speaker 3: discernment on how to handle these Bible stories. We're getting
[33:36] Speaker 3: into some of the harder Bible stories that we're going
[33:39] Speaker 3: to address for children, and we just want to do
[33:42] Speaker 3: it in the right way that honors the Word of God,
[33:45] Speaker 3: but also honors the way He made children.
[33:48] Speaker 1: That's great. I love that.
[33:49] Speaker 2: I love your commitment to integrity to Scripture and not
[33:53] Speaker 2: shying away from the hard stuff, but finding ways to
[33:55] Speaker 2: present it in a way that is easily digestible for
[33:59] Speaker 2: kids and you know, leaves opportunities for parents to fill
[34:03] Speaker 2: in the gaps.
[34:04] Speaker 1: So absolutely. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. All right.
[34:07] Speaker 2: Jess, thank you for being here and let's pray. God,
[34:10] Speaker 2: we just thank you so much for this time together.
[34:13] Speaker 2: Thank you for Jess, for the work that she's doing
[34:15] Speaker 2: with Minnow and with these Bible stories. Thank you for
[34:20] Speaker 2: the commitment to integrity to scripture. And we just pray
[34:23] Speaker 2: that you would just put protection, just a bubble of
[34:27] Speaker 2: protection around their whole team as they, kind of proceed
[34:31] Speaker 2: forward with some of the more difficult Bible stories. We
[34:34] Speaker 2: pray for inspiration. We pray for creativity. We pray for
[34:40] Speaker 2: just supernatural wisdom and protection that they would be able
[34:45] Speaker 2: to stay true to Scripture and find creative ways to
[34:48] Speaker 2: make these stories make sense for kids and provide springboards
[34:53] Speaker 2: for parents to fill in some of the gaps and
[34:55] Speaker 2: some of the questions that might come up that might
[34:57] Speaker 2: be kind of uncomfortable even or difficult. to talk about.
[35:02] Speaker 2: And we just thank you for your word. God, thank
[35:04] Speaker 2: you so much that you have given us this incredible resource.
[35:08] Speaker 2: And we just pray for each person listening that you
[35:10] Speaker 2: would make your word just important to them, that for
[35:15] Speaker 2: those with kids or grandkids or spiritual kids or students,
[35:18] Speaker 2: that you would just help them have a passion for
[35:22] Speaker 2: pointing those children to Jesus and that you would give
[35:24] Speaker 2: them I also pray that you would remove any guilt
[35:27] Speaker 2: for those who feel like it's too late or they
[35:30] Speaker 2: missed the boat or they missed the window or they're
[35:31] Speaker 2: not doing enough because your grace is sufficient.
[35:34] Speaker 1: Your power is made perfect in weakness.
[35:36] Speaker 2: And we just pray that you would give each person
[35:39] Speaker 2: at this moment everything they need to reach the people
[35:43] Speaker 2: in their sphere of influence, the kids, the grandkids, the
[35:46] Speaker 2: adult children and grandchildren, to draw them closer to Jesus
[35:49] Speaker 2: and point them to him because we know with you
[35:51] Speaker 2: all things are possible.
[35:53] Speaker 1: In Jesus' name, amen.
[35:54] Speaker 3: Amen. Thank you.
