The headlines of the day by The Indian Express

## Transcript

[0:03] Speaker 1: This is the catch up on three things by the
[0:06] Speaker 1: Indian Express and I'm Ichha Sharma. Today is the 15th
[0:13] Speaker 1: of September and here are today's headlines. Starting with major news,
[0:18] Speaker 1: merchants will have to pay a fee of 0.4% on
[0:22] Speaker 1: receiving payments of more than 2000 via UPI starting from
[0:27] Speaker 1: 15th of October. The National Payments Corporation of India said
[0:31] Speaker 1: today a day after the government notified that smaller value
[0:34] Speaker 1: payments cannot be charged by banks or service providers. This fee,
[0:39] Speaker 1: called Merchant Discount Rate, will be capped at Rs 300
[0:44] Speaker 1: per transaction. This essentially means that the MDR fee will
[0:48] Speaker 1: not exceed Rs 300 if a UPI payment of Rs 75,000
[0:50] Speaker 1: or more is made to a merchant. In other major news,
[1:00] Speaker 1: in a role reversal of sorts, India is exporting Hilsa
[1:04] Speaker 1: fish to Bangladesh, bucking the trend of the neighbours supplying
[1:07] Speaker 1: the sought-after variety of fish that has the highest place
[1:11] Speaker 1: of pride on Bengal's dining tables. Around 500 tonnes of Hilsa,
[1:16] Speaker 1: known as Ailish in Bengali, have been sent to Bangladesh
[1:20] Speaker 1: in the past two months through the Penjapur land port.
[1:24] Speaker 1: on the international border in West Bengal. Traders expect an
[1:27] Speaker 1: additional 150 to 200 tons of Hilsa to be exported
[1:31] Speaker 1: to Bangladesh in the coming weeks. Traditionally, Hilsa is brought
[1:34] Speaker 1: in from Bangladesh when its government allows its import, generally
[1:38] Speaker 1: during the Pujo festival. Currently, Bangladesh has paused Hilsa exports
[1:43] Speaker 1: to India. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court today allowed Bollywood actor
[1:51] Speaker 1: Rajpal Yadav's request for a last opportunity to deposit Rs
[1:54] Speaker 1: 2 crore with its registry as part payment towards clearing
[1:58] Speaker 1: dues owed to a production house. A three-judge bench, preceded
[2:02] Speaker 1: over by Chief Justice of India Suryakant, also extended Yadav's
[2:06] Speaker 1: interim protection from surrendering until 5 October in connection with
[2:11] Speaker 1: check-bounce cases in which the Delhi High Court sentenced him
[2:14] Speaker 1: to three months of imprisonment. The Supreme Court had previously
[2:17] Speaker 1: granted Yadav exemption from surrendering on the condition that he
[2:20] Speaker 1: deposit 5 crore rupees with its registry. CGI Kant remarked
[2:24] Speaker 1: that the actor's past conduct in the matter failed to
[2:27] Speaker 1: inspire confidence. He said, quote, The thing is, he is
[2:31] Speaker 1: an actor. He is perfect in doing drama and acting
[2:33] Speaker 1: in Bollywood. We hope he is not acting here also. Unquote.
[2:41] Speaker 1: In other major news making national headlines, a Rashtriya Lok
[2:44] Speaker 1: Tantrik Party candidate from Sindhirip Municipal Council in Balotra District
[2:50] Speaker 1: has alleged irregularities in the voting and counting process after
[2:54] Speaker 1: it was declared that he received zero votes in the
[2:56] Speaker 1: election from Ward 3. The outcome of the Rajasthan Urban
[3:00] Speaker 1: Local Body elections on Monday saw the ruling BJP get
[3:03] Speaker 1: the better of the Congress. even as independents in smaller
[3:06] Speaker 1: parties registered a significant performance. But RLP candidate Om Prakash Bauri,
[3:12] Speaker 1: who contested from Ward 3, has submitted a complaint to
[3:15] Speaker 1: the State Election Commission alleging that despite him and his
[3:18] Speaker 1: family members casting their votes, official results showed no votes
[3:21] Speaker 1: in his favour. And in the end, we take a
[3:27] Speaker 1: look at Union Home Minister Amit Shah's announcement. that a
[3:31] Speaker 1: uniform civil code would be implemented in all 21 NDA-ruled states.
[3:36] Speaker 1: Before the next Lok Sabha polls in 2026, most alliance
[3:40] Speaker 1: partners came out in support of the move. A few
[3:43] Speaker 1: other NDA allies, however, adopted a cautious approach while the
[3:47] Speaker 1: JDU made it clear that it could not allow any
[3:49] Speaker 1: such move in the Bihar. The TDP, on which the
[3:52] Speaker 1: BJP-led NDA depends for a majority in parliament and which
[3:55] Speaker 1: has a significant Muslim vote bank in Andhra Pradesh, expressed
[3:59] Speaker 1: support for the move. as did the Shiv Sena and
[4:01] Speaker 1: the Hindustani Awami Morja. Secular. And with that, this was
[4:08] Speaker 1: all for today. This was the catch-up on three things
[4:11] Speaker 1: by the Indian Express.
