## Transcript

[0:03] Speaker 1: This is the catch up on three things by the
[0:05] Speaker 1: Indian Express and I'm Ichha Sharma. Today is the 3rd
[0:13] Speaker 1: of September and here are today's headlines. Starting with major news,
[0:17] Speaker 1: Kenyan President William Ruto today said he had directed Tata
[0:22] Speaker 1: Chemicals to stop operations in Kenya, alleging that the company's
[0:26] Speaker 1: presence had not benefited the country. He asked, are we
[0:29] Speaker 1: slaves to other people? The Kenyan government would bring in
[0:33] Speaker 1: two new companies to take over the operations currently handled
[0:37] Speaker 1: by Tata Chemicals, Ruto said, according to news organisation Reuters. Now,
[0:42] Speaker 1: the announcement comes weeks after Tata Chemicals said in late
[0:45] Speaker 1: July that the Kenyan government had ordered its Kenyan unit
[0:49] Speaker 1: to suspend operations at the Magadi soda factory and halt
[0:53] Speaker 1: exports of soda ash. Meanwhile, on Monday, the last day
[1:01] Speaker 1: of August, as is the norm, India's Ministry of Statistics
[1:05] Speaker 1: and Programme Implementation released the country's economic output data for
[1:09] Speaker 1: the first quarter of the current financial year. At the
[1:12] Speaker 1: start of this quarter, the world was in the midst
[1:15] Speaker 1: of the US-Iran war and most analysts were dialing down
[1:18] Speaker 1: growth expectations given that geopolitics was disrupting all economies around
[1:23] Speaker 1: the world. India in particular was expected to experience slower
[1:27] Speaker 1: growth because it is heavily dependent on imports from West
[1:30] Speaker 1: Asia for its energy needs. However, as the weeks went by,
[1:33] Speaker 1: the data for different sectors of the economy showed that
[1:37] Speaker 1: the Indian economy continued to grow at a faster than
[1:40] Speaker 1: expected rate. By the time the quarter ended in June,
[1:43] Speaker 1: most economists who tracked data expected a growth rate of
[1:47] Speaker 1: around 7.5%. That is, the total economic output produced in
[1:51] Speaker 1: the country in these three months was expected to grow
[1:54] Speaker 1: by 7.5% over what it was in the same three
[1:58] Speaker 1: months in 2025. Some expected the growth rate to even
[2:02] Speaker 1: be higher. around 7.8%. As it turns out, the official
[2:07] Speaker 1: data for Q1 showed that India's gross domestic product grew
[2:11] Speaker 1: by 7.8% in real terms and 10.3% in nominal terms.
[2:15] Speaker 1: And the difference between the two types of GDP is
[2:18] Speaker 1: the effect of inflation. In other major news making national headlines,
[2:25] Speaker 1: Telangana Chief Minister A. Rewant Reddy has decided to drop
[2:29] Speaker 1: Endowments Minister Konda Surekha from the Council of Ministers with
[2:33] Speaker 1: immediate effect, the Chief Minister's office said. A release issued
[2:37] Speaker 1: by the CMO said, A recommendation to this effect has
[2:40] Speaker 1: been sent to the Honourable Governor already. For Surekha to
[2:43] Speaker 1: be dropped from the Council of Ministers, Telangana Governor Shiv
[2:47] Speaker 1: Pratap Shukla has to give his assent. The Chief Minister
[2:50] Speaker 1: has also decided to rescind the appointment of G. Chinna
[2:54] Speaker 1: Reddy as Vice Chairman of the Telangana Planning Board with
[2:56] Speaker 1: immediate effect. In place of G. Chinna Reddy, Goodwile Vijayalakshmi
[3:01] Speaker 1: has been appointed as Vice Chancellor, Telangana Planning Board said
[3:05] Speaker 1: in a release. Meanwhile, ancient relics dating between the 14th
[3:13] Speaker 1: and the 16th centuries indicating the existence of an ancient
[3:16] Speaker 1: temple complex in a corridor have been found during restoration
[3:20] Speaker 1: work at the old site of Saptakotheshwar Temple in Goa's
[3:25] Speaker 1: Diwar Island, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said today. The archaeological
[3:29] Speaker 1: discoveries include a Keerthi Mukh motif, which is traditionally carved
[3:34] Speaker 1: above temple doorways and a carved capital of a temple pillar.
[3:42] Speaker 1: And in the end, in news-making global headlines, US President
[3:45] Speaker 1: Donald Trump has suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz Trump Strait,
[3:49] Speaker 1: claiming that the strategic waterway is now under American control
[3:53] Speaker 1: amid the ongoing war with Iran. Trump said on his
[3:56] Speaker 1: Truth Social Network, quote, Now that we have it under
[4:00] Speaker 1: USA control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to
[4:05] Speaker 1: Trump Strait? Unquote. The White House also shared the post
[4:08] Speaker 1: on its official X handle featuring a map that named
[4:11] Speaker 1: the waterway the Trump Strait with the caption, It's got
[4:15] Speaker 1: a nice ring to it. And with that, this was
[4:21] Speaker 1: all for today. This was The Catch-Up on Three Things
[4:23] Speaker 1: by The Indian Express.
