[0:03] Speaker 1: This is the Catch Up on 3 Things by the
[0:05] Speaker 1: Indian Express and I'm Ichha Sharma. Today is the 8th
[0:13] Speaker 1: of September and here are today's headlines. Starting with major news,
[0:18] Speaker 1: the Mumbai police arrested a man for allegedly posing as
[0:21] Speaker 1: a Prime Minister officer's official during a security check at
[0:26] Speaker 1: the Neeta Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Bandra Kulla complex,
[0:30] Speaker 1: ahead of an event to be attended by Prime Minister
[0:33] Speaker 1: Narendra Modi. The man was also carrying a licensed pistol,
[0:37] Speaker 1: officials said. Heightened security was put in place ahead of
[0:40] Speaker 1: PM Modi's visit to the venue. According to the police,
[0:43] Speaker 1: the suspect arrived in BKC on Monday evening with another
[0:46] Speaker 1: man from Khar, who was accompanying him as his bodyguard.
[0:51] Speaker 1: During the security check, the bodyguard allegedly claimed to be
[0:54] Speaker 1: a PMO official. Given the sensitive nature of the area
[0:57] Speaker 1: and the heightened security arrangements, the police conducted a detailed inquiry. Meanwhile,
[1:06] Speaker 1: a day after Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah
[1:09] Speaker 1: said the protest by medical interns is not in anyone's
[1:12] Speaker 1: interest and the issue should be resolved as soon as possible.
[1:16] Speaker 1: Two medical colleges in the valley have issued a show
[1:18] Speaker 1: cause notice to protesting interns. The notices ask interns to
[1:22] Speaker 1: explain within 24 hours why disciplinary action should not be
[1:27] Speaker 1: initiated against them. Calling the strike gross indiscipline and professional
[1:32] Speaker 1: misconduct that warrants curtailment temporary suspension or even cancellation of internship.
[1:39] Speaker 1: One notice issued by the principal, Skims Medical College, reminds
[1:44] Speaker 1: the interns that they have submitted affidavits promising they will
[1:47] Speaker 1: not be involved in any kind of strike, court cases
[1:51] Speaker 1: or any other acts of indiscipline. Meanwhile, in a striking statement,
[1:59] Speaker 1: the Muzaffar Nagar judge, who recently quoted controversy for handing
[2:03] Speaker 1: out 22 death sentences within four months said he would
[2:08] Speaker 1: rather die than be a coward and give in to
[2:10] Speaker 1: the dikkats of mafias, strongmen or criminals. UP Judge Ravi
[2:15] Speaker 1: Kumar Diwakar credited his parents with teaching him to fear
[2:19] Speaker 1: only God. The UP judge's statement, penned in Hindi, came
[2:23] Speaker 1: in a dowry death case ruling where he sentenced the
[2:27] Speaker 1: man to the death penalty on 7th September. Judge Diwakar wrote, quote,
[2:32] Speaker 1: If I become fearful of other forces, it would be
[2:35] Speaker 1: appropriate for me to resign from this sacred judicial institution.
[2:39] Speaker 1: I would rather die, but would not like to be
[2:42] Speaker 1: called a coward judge. As long as I can follow
[2:45] Speaker 1: my principles, I will continue in service. As long as
[2:48] Speaker 1: I am on the judge's chair, the authority to take
[2:50] Speaker 1: decisions or judgments will be mine alone. In other major news,
[2:59] Speaker 1: in the early hours of Monday, posters invoking the 2013
[3:02] Speaker 1: Muzaffar Nagar riots appeared near the city's bus stand with
[3:06] Speaker 1: this message, which loosely translates to, We had not forgotten,
[3:13] Speaker 1: we have not forgotten, we will not forget. Newspaper clippings
[3:17] Speaker 1: were pasted alongside the posters, which appeared on the day
[3:20] Speaker 1: that marked 13 years since the riots erupted. Muzaffar Nagar
[3:24] Speaker 1: police quickly removed the posters after being alerted and are
[3:27] Speaker 1: now trying to identify the people behind them and probing
[3:30] Speaker 1: their motive. Police said the miscreants were caught on CCTV
[3:35] Speaker 1: getting off a bus on Monday and pasting posters. And
[3:42] Speaker 1: in the end, we take a look at West Bengal,
[3:45] Speaker 1: where weeks before Durga Pooja celebrations, Bhageshwar Dham, Chief Priest
[3:49] Speaker 1: Direndra Shastri's controversial remarks against eating fish and meat during
[3:54] Speaker 1: the festival, have caused disquiet in West Bengal with the
[3:58] Speaker 1: BJP state chief, Saming Bhattacharya, distancing the party from the comments.
[4:02] Speaker 1: The Congress has now filed a police complaint against Shastri.
[4:06] Speaker 1: Over the weekend, Shastri urged people not to cook or
[4:08] Speaker 1: eat fish or meat during Durga Pujo and said those
[4:12] Speaker 1: who did were Pakhandi, which loosely translates to fraud. The
[4:16] Speaker 1: Congress also warned that attempts to divide people in Bengal...
[4:19] Speaker 1: along linguistic or identity lines could undermine social harmony. The
[4:24] Speaker 1: opposition party claimed that Shastri's remarks at an event organized
[4:27] Speaker 1: in Lua, which was attended by prominent personalities, officials and
[4:31] Speaker 1: public representatives, hurt the sentiments of the people of Bengal.
[4:38] Speaker 1: And with that, this was all for today. This was
[4:41] Speaker 1: the catch-up on three things by the Indian Express.
