[0:04] Speaker 1: This is the catch-up on three things by the Indian
[0:06] Speaker 1: Express and I'm Ichha Sharma. Today is the 22nd of
[0:14] Speaker 1: October and here are today's headlines. Starting with major news,
[0:18] Speaker 1: Hindutva outfits like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal
[0:22] Speaker 1: are all set to step up their protest against Pyare
[0:25] Speaker 1: Khan's appointment as Maharashtra State Minorities Commission Chairman. The outfits
[0:31] Speaker 1: have announced a protest outside Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's residence,
[0:35] Speaker 1: the Gadkari Wada, in the city's Mahal area, which also
[0:39] Speaker 1: houses the RSS headquarters, on Saturday demanding Khan's removal, alleging
[0:44] Speaker 1: he rose to the position due to political patronage. Khan
[0:48] Speaker 1: is a Nagpur-based businessman who owns a transport company, came
[0:52] Speaker 1: to prominence during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, when
[0:56] Speaker 1: he spent more than Rs 85 lakh to transport over
[1:01] Speaker 1: 400 metric tonnes of liquid oxygen to hospitals in and
[1:05] Speaker 1: around Nadpur. He declined an offer from the administration to
[1:08] Speaker 1: reimburse the expenses, saying the assistance was his humanitarian duty
[1:13] Speaker 1: during Ramzan. Gadkari helped coordinate the logistics, while Chief Minister
[1:17] Speaker 1: Devendra Fadnavis also helped arrange tankers. Khan subsequently came to
[1:22] Speaker 1: be known as the Oxygen Man. In other major news,
[1:29] Speaker 1: the US wants India to buy more Venezuelan oil, particularly
[1:34] Speaker 1: through Reliance Industries Limited, which runs the world's largest single-location
[1:39] Speaker 1: refining complex in Gujarat's Jamnagar. US Secretary of State Marco
[1:43] Speaker 1: Rubio visited Gujarat RIL's Jamnagar Mega Refinery Complex today, and
[1:48] Speaker 1: one of the items on the agenda of his meeting
[1:50] Speaker 1: with IRL, Top Brass, was expanding India's and IRL's imports
[1:56] Speaker 1: of Venezuelan oil, which is now under US oversight. Ahead
[2:00] Speaker 1: of his Jamnagar visit, Rubio said on Tuesday that India
[2:04] Speaker 1: is a refining superpower and pitched for an increase in
[2:07] Speaker 1: oil imports from the Western Hemisphere to particularly Venezuela, as
[2:11] Speaker 1: New Delhi continues to diversify its energy sourcing portfolio. RIL's
[2:16] Speaker 1: twin refinery is among the most complex in the world,
[2:20] Speaker 1: which means that it is equipped to process the extremely
[2:23] Speaker 1: heavy Venezuelan crude. A few other Indian refineries can also
[2:28] Speaker 1: handle Carcass's highly viscous oil. In other major news, three
[2:36] Speaker 1: Christian families were allegedly assaulted. One of them was forced
[2:40] Speaker 1: to take a purification bath in public and all were
[2:42] Speaker 1: made to perform a ritual at a Durga Puja Pandal
[2:46] Speaker 1: in West Bengal's West Nidnapur district. The incident took place
[2:51] Speaker 1: under the Chandrakona police limits on 18th, 19th and 20th
[2:55] Speaker 1: of October. Although police personnel have been posted near their houses,
[3:00] Speaker 1: The victims said they fear further attacks. The police have
[3:04] Speaker 1: registered a case on charges including attempt to murder, criminal intimidation,
[3:08] Speaker 1: outraging a woman's modesty and robbery. Meanwhile, in the 10
[3:16] Speaker 1: years since Bihar imposed prohibition, its police have seized around 3.16
[3:23] Speaker 1: crore litres of liquor and made around 7.1 lakh related
[3:27] Speaker 1: arrests across the state. around 8,650 litres and 196 arrests
[3:34] Speaker 1: on an average every day. This is known. What has
[3:37] Speaker 1: flown under the radar, however, is that beyond the smuggled bottle,
[3:41] Speaker 1: a parallel world of intoxicant is taking shape, one that
[3:46] Speaker 1: involves pocket-sized packets, tablet strips, heroin to a distinctive variety quota, vials,
[3:53] Speaker 1: soap boxes or even a petticoat fold. For a police
[3:57] Speaker 1: force that spent a decade learning to find contraband liquor
[4:00] Speaker 1: in trains, tankers and horse bone consignments, the fast-emerging market
[4:05] Speaker 1: in drugs has set off a series of alarm bells
[4:08] Speaker 1: they have begun tuning into. An investigation by the Indian
[4:12] Speaker 1: Express shows. And in the end, we take a look
[4:18] Speaker 1: at Uttarakhand, where Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today said
[4:22] Speaker 1: He would speak to singer Diler Mehendi and his brother
[4:25] Speaker 1: Mika Singh over the controversy surrounding Cabinet Minister Subhot Unayal's
[4:29] Speaker 1: public confrontation with Mehendi during a performance at a tourism
[4:33] Speaker 1: fair in Tehri district. Dami also urged all sides to
[4:37] Speaker 1: put the matter to rest. He said, quote, there was
[4:47] Speaker 1: some pressure from the public at that time, but now
[4:49] Speaker 1: this matter should be put to rest, unquote. And with that,
[4:57] Speaker 1: this is all for today. This was the catch up
[4:59] Speaker 1: on three things by the Indian Express.
