Did you know that the stories of the Old Testament were pointing forward to Jesus? In this episode of Truth Seekers: Bible Stories for Kids, we explore Luke 24:36–49, where the risen Jesus appears to His disciples and helps them understand how the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms were all pointing to Him. From God’s promises in Genesis to the Passover lamb, the sacrifices, King David, and the words of the prophets, the Bible tells one great story of redemption. Jesus explains that His suffering, death, and resurrection were not accidents, rather they were the fulfillment of God’s rescue plan that had been unfolding throughout Scripture. But God’s plan wasn’t finished! Jesus tells His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for something the Father had promised. What were they waiting for? Looking at Jesus’ words in Luke 24 and John 14–16, we discover His promise to send the Advocate, the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit, to be with His people and guide them in truth. This Bible story for kids will help children understand how the Old Testament points to Jesus, how Jesus fulfills Scripture, and how the promise of the Holy Spirit prepares the way for what happens next at Pentecost. Scripture: Luke 24:36–49; John 14:16–17; John 16:7–13 Truth Seekers is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. [0:02] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Christian parenting Hello and welcome to the True Seekers podcast.
[0:09] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The True Seekers someone who wants to know the truth.
[0:12] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They search for what's true and they won't rest until they find it.
[0:16] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I am a true seeker and if you are to then you've come to the right place where we will search for truth each week in the stories of the Bible.
[0:24] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Well, two seekers, over the last several episodes, we have been following what happened after Jesus rose from the dead.
[0:31] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Mary saw Jesus in the garden.
[0:33] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Two disciples walked with him on the road to Emmaus.
[0:37] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus appeared to his disciples behind locked doors.
[0:40] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Thomas saw him and believed.
[0:42] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Peter sat beside a fire with Jesus and discovered that his failure was not the end of the story.
[0:48] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus was alive.
[0:51] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But there was something his disciples still needed to understand.
[0:55] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They needed to understand why.
[0:58] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Why had Jesus needed to die?
[1:00] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Why did he rise again?
[1:01] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And what did all of this have to do with everything God had been doing throughout the rest of the Bible?
[1:07] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Well, Jesus was about to explain it to them.
[1:11] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Luke tells us that the disciples were together talking about everything that had happened when suddenly, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "'Peace be with you."
[1:22] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Can you imagine?
[1:24] \[SPEAKER_00\]: One moment they were talking about Jesus, the next moment Jesus was standing right there.
[1:30] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But instead of being excited, the Bible tells us they were startled,
[1:34] \[SPEAKER_00\]: and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.
[1:37] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They had watched Jesus die.
[1:40] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They knew his body had been placed in a tomb.
[1:42] \[SPEAKER_00\]: How could he possibly be standing in front of them?
[1:46] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus knew exactly what they were thinking.
[1:48] \[SPEAKER_00\]: He said, why are you troubled?
[1:50] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And why do doubts rise in your minds?
[1:53] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Then Jesus said to them, look at my hands and feet.
[1:57] \[SPEAKER_00\]: It is my self.
[1:59] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Touch me and see.
[2:00] \[SPEAKER_00\]: A ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.
[2:04] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus wanted them to understand something very important.
[2:07] \[SPEAKER_00\]: He was really alive.
[2:09] \[SPEAKER_00\]: This was not their imagination.
[2:12] \[SPEAKER_00\]: This was Jesus.
[2:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The same Jesus who had been nailed to the cross was standing in front of them.
[2:19] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Luke tells us when he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet and then something almost funny happened.
[2:27] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The disciples were so amazed and so joyful that they had trouble
[2:33] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So Jesus asked them, do you have anything here to eat?
[2:38] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They gave him a piece of broiled fish and Jesus ate it right there in front of them.
[2:43] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Can you imagine watching him eat?
[2:46] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Maybe the disciples were staring at Jesus as he ate that fish.
[2:50] \[SPEAKER_00\]: He really is here they thought.
[2:52] \[SPEAKER_00\]: He really is eating.
[2:54] \[SPEAKER_00\]: He really is alive.
[2:57] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But then, Jesus began to explain something to them even bigger, something I want every true secret listening to understand.
[3:06] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus said, this is what I told you while I was with you.
[3:10] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets and the Psalms.
[3:17] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Wait a minute.
[3:18] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Did you hear what Jesus just said?
[3:21] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus was talking about what we call the Old Testament, the Law of Moses, the prophets, the Psalms, these were the Scriptures, the disciples had heard and studied their entire lives, and Jesus was telling them they are pointing to me.
[3:39] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Think about all the stories we have learned together as true seekers, way back in Genesis, sin entered God's beautiful creation and separated people from Him, but God promised that He would send a rescuer.
[3:54] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And do you remember Abraham?
[3:56] \[SPEAKER_00\]: God promised Abraham that through His family all the nations of the earth would be blessed, and that promise was pointing forward to Jesus.
[4:04] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Remember the Passover?
[4:07] \[SPEAKER_00\]: God's people were slaves in Egypt, and God told each family to sacrifice the lamb.
[4:13] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The blood of the lamb would be a sign, and God's judgment would pass over that home.
[4:19] \[SPEAKER_00\]: That pass over lamb was pointing forward to Jesus.
[4:24] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Remember the sacrifices God's people offered because of sin?
[4:28] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They were pointing forward.
[4:30] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Remember King David?
[4:32] \[SPEAKER_00\]: God promised that one day a king would come from David's family line.
[4:37] \[SPEAKER_00\]: that promise was pointing forward.
[4:40] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Remember the prophet Isaiah hundreds of years before Jesus was born Isaiah wrote about a servant who would suffer for the sins of others.
[4:49] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Isaiah wrote that he would be pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our equities.
[4:55] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Isaiah was pointing forward.
[4:58] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Story after story.
[5:00] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Promise after promise.
[5:01] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Prophecy after prophecy.
[5:04] \[SPEAKER_00\]: All of them were like little
[5:07] \[SPEAKER_00\]: He's coming.
[5:08] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus is coming.
[5:10] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The Messiah is coming and now Jesus was standing in front of his disciples saying, I am the one they were pointing to you.
[5:20] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The Bible is in a bunch of random stories about different people who tried to follow God.
[5:25] \[SPEAKER_00\]: It's one big story.
[5:28] \[SPEAKER_00\]: God's story of redemption.
[5:30] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And Jesus is at the center of it all.
[5:34] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Luke tells us something beautiful, then Jesus opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures.
[5:41] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Can you imagine having Jesus himself teach you the whole Bible and how the whole Bible fits together?
[5:48] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Maybe the disciples began remembering stories they had known since they were children, suddenly they could see something they'd never seen before.
[5:56] \[SPEAKER_00\]: It was Jesus.
[5:58] \[SPEAKER_00\]: It had always been pointing to Jesus.
[6:01] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Then Jesus told them exactly what the scriptures had been pointing toward.
[6:05] \[SPEAKER_00\]: This is what is written.
[6:07] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day.
[6:11] \[SPEAKER_00\]: There it was.
[6:13] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The cross was not an accident.
[6:15] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus' death was not God's plan going wrong.
[6:18] \[SPEAKER_00\]: This had been God's rescue plan all along.
[6:22] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus came to do something we could never do for ourselves.
[6:25] \[SPEAKER_00\]: He came to deal with our greatest problem, sin.
[6:29] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But listen to what Jesus said next.
[6:32] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in His name to all nations beginning at Jerusalem.
[6:40] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The good news was not supposed to stop with the disciples.
[6:44] \[SPEAKER_00\]: It was not just for Jerusalem, and it was not just for the Jewish people.
[6:49] \[SPEAKER_00\]: It was for all nations.
[6:51] \[SPEAKER_00\]: In Jesus looked at these ordinary men and told them, you are witnesses of these things.
[6:57] \[SPEAKER_00\]: A witness is someone who tells what they have seen and know to be true, and these men had seen it.
[7:03] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They had watched Jesus perform miracles, they had heard His teaching, they had watched Him die, they had seen the empty tomb, and now they were standing in a room with the risen Jesus.
[7:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They were witnesses.
[7:16] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So maybe you would expect Jesus to say, go, go right now, run outside, tell everyone.
[7:22] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But he didn't.
[7:24] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Before they could go, there was something they needed.
[7:27] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Actually, some one they needed.
[7:30] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus told them, I am going to send you what my father has promised, but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.
[7:39] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Wait.
[7:41] \[SPEAKER_00\]: What did he mean?
[7:42] \[SPEAKER_00\]: What had the father promised?
[7:44] \[SPEAKER_00\]: What was this power from on high?
[7:47] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus had actually told his disciples about this before he died.
[7:51] \[SPEAKER_00\]: On the night before Jesus went to the cross, he had told them that he would soon be leaving them.
[7:56] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The disciples didn't understand.
[7:58] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They had followed Jesus everywhere for three years.
[8:02] \[SPEAKER_00\]: What would they do without him?
[8:04] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But Jesus told them they would not be alone.
[8:07] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Listen to His promise in John 14.
[8:10] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever, the Spirit of Truth.
[8:18] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit, Jesus was promising that God Himself would be with them.
[8:26] \[SPEAKER_00\]: but listen carefully to what Jesus said next.
[8:29] \[SPEAKER_00\]: You know him, for he lives with you and he will be in you.
[8:33] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Did you catch that?
[8:35] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Not just with you, in you.
[8:39] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Something completely new was about to happen, and later Jesus told them even more.
[8:44] \[SPEAKER_00\]: He said, it is for your good that I'm going away.
[8:48] \[SPEAKER_00\]: For their good?
[8:49] \[SPEAKER_00\]: How could Jesus leaving possibly be good?
[8:53] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus explained, unless I go away, the advocate will not come to you.
[8:59] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But if I go, I will send him to you.
[9:02] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus was going away, but the disciples were not going to be abandoned.
[9:08] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The Advocate was coming.
[9:10] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Do you know what an Advocate is?
[9:13] \[SPEAKER_00\]: An Advocate is someone who speaks on our behalf.
[9:16] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Someone who is there for us, a Hoper.
[9:20] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The Hoper was coming, the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth.
[9:32] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Do you see what was happening?
[9:34] \[SPEAKER_00\]: God had been unfolding his rescue plan throughout the entire Bible.
[9:39] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The Old Testament pointed forward to Jesus.
[9:42] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus came.
[9:43] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus lived the perfect life we could never live.
[9:46] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus died for sin.
[9:47] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus rose from the dead, but the story was not finished.
[9:51] \[SPEAKER_00\]: There was another promise waiting to be fulfilled.
[9:55] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The Holy Spirit was coming.
[9:57] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And Jesus told his disciples,
[10:00] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Don't run ahead.
[10:02] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Don't try to do this by yourselves.
[10:04] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.
[10:09] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I wonder what the disciples thought when they heard those words.
[10:12] \[SPEAKER_00\]: How long would they have to wait?
[10:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: What would this power look like?
[10:17] \[SPEAKER_00\]: How would they know when the Holy Spirit had come?
[10:20] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They did not know yet.
[10:21] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They simply had a promise.
[10:23] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And sometimes that's exactly where God asks us to live between the promise and its fulfillment.
[10:31] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The disciples had to trust that if Jesus said the Holy Spirit was coming, then He was coming.
[10:36] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And true seekers, we know something they did not know yet.
[10:40] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Something incredible was about to happen in Jerusalem.
[10:44] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The disciples who had once hidden behind locked doors were about to become bold witnesses for Jesus.
[10:51] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The good news was about to spread from Jerusalem to places all over the world.
[10:56] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But first, they had to wait.
[10:59] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The father had made a promise, and God always keeps his promises.
[11:05] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Dear True Seekers, what truth do we find in today's story?
[11:09] \[SPEAKER_00\]: In today's story we learn that the Bible is not just a random collection of great stories, but it is one story.
[11:16] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Creating one picture of God's rescue plan to send Jesus into this world to save us and redeem us and restore us back to himself.
[11:25] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The Bible tells one story of God's plan in four parts.
[11:30] \[SPEAKER_00\]: In creation, we see that God created the world, and humans still live in that world, and it was good.
[11:36] \[SPEAKER_00\]: In the fall, we see that Adam and Eve chose to disobey God and sin entered the world, separating us from God.
[11:43] \[SPEAKER_00\]: In restoration, we see that God sent His sin Jesus to pay the price for our sin, take that sin upon Himself, and offer us a way of salvation back to God.
[11:54] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And in restoration, we will see that God is going to return one day and make all things new.
[12:01] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Jesus showed His disciples that all of the stories of the Old Testament, all of the things that we read and learn about in the Old Testament,
[12:11] \[SPEAKER_00\]: point to him, but the story is not over yet.
[12:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: We still have more to go, and if you'd like to read today's story in your Bible, you can find it in Luke 24 vs 36 through 49.
[12:22] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Let me pray with you before we go.
[12:27] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us your word, thank you that the Bible is one great beautiful story of your plan to rescue your people from sin.
[12:37] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Thank you for all the promises, stories and prophecies in the Old Testament that pointed forward to Jesus.
[12:44] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And thank you that Jesus came and fulfilled what you had promised.
[12:48] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Open our minds like you opened the minds of the disciples so that we can understand the scriptures.
[12:53] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Help us not to see the Bible as just a collection of separate stories, but to see your great story of redemption through it all.
[13:01] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And to recognize Jesus at the center of it all.
[13:05] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Thank you also that you did not leave your disciples alone.
[13:08] \[SPEAKER_00\]: You promised to send them the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, to be with them and in them and to be with us and with us.
[13:17] \[SPEAKER_00\]: We love you so much.
[13:18] \[SPEAKER_00\]: We thank you for all you've done for us.

[13:22] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Amen.
[13:23] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Before we go, I have a couple reviews I want to read.
