If today's episode left you with the feeling that you're behind on something, here's a two-minute way to find out what that something actually is. The Behind-What Check walks you through naming the specific area behind the feeling, tracing where the number you're measuring against actually came from, and writing down one real move you've already made. It ends with one honest next step, only if one actually applies. It won't erase a real gap, and it isn't meant to. It's meant to separate the timeline you inherited from the one you'd actually choose. Follow 7 Good Minutes for new episodes every day. ## Transcript

[0:00] Speaker 1: Clyde Lee Dennis here with today's episode of 7 Good Minutes, Extra.
[0:04] Speaker 1: Today's main episode was about the feeling of being behind
[0:07] Speaker 1: in life, even when you're doing fine. That feeling usually
[0:11] Speaker 1: comes from measuring your life against someone else's timeline, so
[0:15] Speaker 1: here's a way to check which timeline you're actually using.
[0:18] Speaker 1: It's called the Behind What Check, and it takes about
[0:21] Speaker 1: two minutes. Start by putting the feeling into one sentence,
[0:25] Speaker 1: something like, I feel behind. Priesthood. Step 1. Finish the sentence.
[0:31] Speaker 1: Behind what? Name one specific area. Money. Work. Health. A relationship. Home.
[0:39] Speaker 1: If your answer is everything, pick the one that makes
[0:42] Speaker 1: your chest tighten fastest. Step 2. Find the number. Write
[0:47] Speaker 1: down the age, date, or milestone you think you're supposed
[0:50] Speaker 1: to have reached in that area. Then ask where it
[0:53] Speaker 1: came from. Your parents? A friend? Someone at work? A
[0:57] Speaker 1: post you saw once? If you can't trace it, that's
[1:00] Speaker 1: a good sign the number isn't yours. Step 3. Name
[1:04] Speaker 1: one real move. Think about the past 12 months in
[1:07] Speaker 1: that same area. What did you do, even something small,
[1:11] Speaker 1: that moved you in a direction you'd choose? Write it down.
[1:15] Speaker 1: Paying down a small debt counts. Saying no to something counts.
[1:19] Speaker 1: Showing up for a hard conversation counts. Step 4. Decide
[1:24] Speaker 1: on one next step, but only if a real one appears.
[1:27] Speaker 1: Not a plan for your whole life. Just the next
[1:29] Speaker 1: honest action in that one area, if there is one.
[1:33] Speaker 1: If there isn't, that's fine too. Then stop. Close the note,
[1:37] Speaker 1: put the phone down, and let the feeling be what
[1:39] Speaker 1: it is for a while. When should you expect? Usually
[1:44] Speaker 1: a clearer sense of which timeline you've been measuring against.
[1:47] Speaker 1: Sometimes that's enough to turn the volume down. It won't
[1:50] Speaker 1: always remove the feeling, and it won't make a real
[1:52] Speaker 1: gap disappear. But it can change the question from, Am
[1:56] Speaker 1: I behind? to, Behind what? And is that mine? Try
[2:01] Speaker 1: it once today, the next time the feeling shows up.
[2:04] Speaker 1: If the number turns out to belong to someone else,
[2:07] Speaker 1: you've already learned something useful. Until next time, I'm Clyde
[2:11] Speaker 1: Lee Dennis, and this has been 7 Good Minutes Extra.
