Today's Extra turns the morning energy problem into one specific move you can use tomorrow, before your first cup has even finished brewing. It's called the First-Light Lap: a few minutes of real light, light movement, and a glass of water, stacked into the time you're already standing around waiting on the pot. Nothing new to schedule, nothing to buy, and it still counts even on a morning where you only manage one piece of it. Follow 7 Good Minutes for new episodes every day. ## Transcript

[0:00] Speaker 1: Clyde Lee Dennis here, with today's episode of 7 Good Minutes, Extra.
[0:05] Speaker 1: Today we talked about why coffee alone can't carry a
[0:07] Speaker 1: morning all the way to 10 o'clock. Because it mostly
[0:11] Speaker 1: blocks your brain's tiredness signal rather than creating new energy.
[0:15] Speaker 1: And why light, brief movement, and water act more directly
[0:19] Speaker 1: on the systems that actually produce it. Here's a way
[0:22] Speaker 1: to stack all three into a morning you're already living,
[0:25] Speaker 1: in just a few minutes. Call it the first light lap.
[0:29] Speaker 1: Use it while your coffee is brewing. You don't need
[0:31] Speaker 1: to find extra time because that waiting is already built
[0:34] Speaker 1: into your morning. First, instead of standing at the counter
[0:38] Speaker 1: watching the pot, step toward real light and go for
[0:41] Speaker 1: the brightest option you've got. Outside is best if that's easy.
[0:46] Speaker 1: A porch, a driveway, even just an open doorway. If
[0:49] Speaker 1: you're staying in, get right up to a bright, unobstructed
[0:53] Speaker 1: window rather than just facing one from across the room.
[0:57] Speaker 1: A lamp or an open fridge doesn't count. Second, keep
[1:00] Speaker 1: moving while you're there. Walk to get the mail. Walk
[1:04] Speaker 1: a kid to the car or the bus. Take the
[1:06] Speaker 1: trash out. Climb a flight of stairs once if your
[1:09] Speaker 1: home has them. It doesn't need to be a workout.
[1:12] Speaker 1: A few minutes of real movement is the point, not
[1:15] Speaker 1: a set number of steps. Third, drink a full glass
[1:19] Speaker 1: of water around the same time as that first cup
[1:21] Speaker 1: of coffee, not instead of it. That's it. Light, movement, water,
[1:27] Speaker 1: stacked into time you were already spending. If one morning
[1:30] Speaker 1: only leaves room for one of the three, do that one.
[1:33] Speaker 1: It still beats coffee alone. One honest limit. This won't
[1:38] Speaker 1: fix a genuine sleep deficit, and it's not medical advice.
[1:42] Speaker 1: If you're doing all of this and still running on
[1:44] Speaker 1: empty most mornings, that's worth raising with a doctor, not
[1:47] Speaker 1: solving with a routine. Until next time, I'm Clyde Lee Dennis,
[1:52] Speaker 1: and this has been 7 Good Minutes Extra.
