[0:01] Speaker 1: Hey Discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life?
[0:05] Speaker 1: Just a touch to get you through? Yeah, me too.
[0:08] Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
[0:12] Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after party. Do people actually believe that
[0:32] Speaker 1: Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain or did they just hate
[0:36] Speaker 1: Courtney Love so much that they cannot accept the fact
[0:41] Speaker 1: that Kurt killed himself? Um, I've asked this question a
[0:47] Speaker 1: couple of times before. The first time it came up,
[0:50] Speaker 1: of course, was when we released originally released our Nirvana episodes,
[0:54] Speaker 1: our two part story. It's basically on Kurt and Courtney. Um,
[0:58] Speaker 1: And we had them in the Rewind feed this past weekend.
[1:03] Speaker 1: And we excerpted parts of that story for some content
[1:07] Speaker 1: on Instagram. And the response has been, I mean, I
[1:11] Speaker 1: knew the response was going to be what it was.
[1:13] Speaker 1: I didn't know it was going to be as intense
[1:17] Speaker 1: as it was. I know that there's a large group
[1:20] Speaker 1: of people out there who believe what they believe about
[1:23] Speaker 1: Courtney Love. And it's not what I believe, clearly. And
[1:27] Speaker 1: I knew that they were going to be upset by
[1:29] Speaker 1: the fact that we were pointing out this anecdote from
[1:32] Speaker 1: the couple's past where Kurt overdosed. I talked about this
[1:36] Speaker 1: last week in the after party, he overdosed and Courtney
[1:38] Speaker 1: saved his life. Um, the response is not only intense.
[1:44] Speaker 1: This is, again, this is on social media. It's on Instagram. It's,
[1:46] Speaker 1: it's also, it's also pretty hysterical. Um, It's very flattering, guys,
[1:52] Speaker 1: to think that Courtney Love would pay me to do
[1:57] Speaker 1: publicity for her. It's very flattering to think that people
[2:05] Speaker 1: believe that I'm an industry plant. But it is kind
[2:09] Speaker 1: of ridiculous and fascinating. It's more fascinating to me than
[2:14] Speaker 1: it is ridiculous. And it deserves some unpacking. Because... Again,
[2:20] Speaker 1: I've looked at everything out there, including, of course, Soaked
[2:23] Speaker 1: in Bleach, including the new so-called evidence that has come
[2:29] Speaker 1: out over the last 12 to 18 months, whatever it is.
[2:33] Speaker 1: And yes, there's a lot of compelling, I don't want
[2:41] Speaker 1: to call it evidence, circumstances, compelling circumstance, excuse me, to
[2:47] Speaker 1: the death of Kurt. there's a lot you could pull
[2:51] Speaker 1: to paint some sort of narrative, some sort of picture
[2:55] Speaker 1: here that points fingers at Courtney Love, but there's no
[2:59] Speaker 1: actual evidence. And if there were, my God, man, don't
[3:04] Speaker 1: you think that Courtney Love would be held accountable? Okay,
[3:09] Speaker 1: but hold on. Let's just go back. I'm more interested
[3:12] Speaker 1: in the why, like where this disdain comes from. Now,
[3:17] Speaker 1: on the one hand, I get it. Courtney Love is
[3:22] Speaker 1: an outrageous person. She always has been, even in the
[3:26] Speaker 1: last two decades of her career here, where she hasn't
[3:28] Speaker 1: really been as in the public eye as she was
[3:32] Speaker 1: in the 90s and in the early 2000s. She is
[3:35] Speaker 1: still outrageous, truly. In the truest sense of that word,
[3:41] Speaker 1: she is outrageous. She says things that are meant to
[3:46] Speaker 1: drive you crazy, to get attention. She does truly outrageous things.
[3:50] Speaker 1: I know two people personally who went to her house
[3:52] Speaker 1: and had the same story. She answered the door naked.
[3:56] Speaker 1: And that's just me. I cannot imagine what it's like
[4:03] Speaker 1: for people who actually know Courtney Love. But I'm guessing
[4:06] Speaker 1: that most of the people in the comments section on
[4:09] Speaker 1: our Instagram page do not know Courtney Love. And I'm
[4:13] Speaker 1: also pretty sure that most of the people who are
[4:15] Speaker 1: saying these ridiculous things, making these ridiculous comments, aren't Disgraceland
[4:21] Speaker 1: podcast followers. Some of them are. Most of them are
[4:25] Speaker 1: just Disgraceland Instagram followers. And there's a difference. A lack
[4:29] Speaker 1: of understanding of nuance, I think, is the main difference.
[4:32] Speaker 1: But whatever, that's a different story. My point is, I
[4:35] Speaker 1: don't know, amongst those of you who are listening now,
[4:39] Speaker 1: I don't know how many of you are as.
[4:43] Speaker 1: Convinced that Courtney Love killed Kurt as a large portion
[4:47] Speaker 1: of people on the internet are. And that's because I
[4:50] Speaker 1: think most of our podcast listeners are, I think you
[4:54] Speaker 1: guys are smart. I think you guys are well-informed and
[4:56] Speaker 1: I think you know how to process information. However, I
[4:59] Speaker 1: do understand because I get the emails that there's some
[5:03] Speaker 1: of you who still think that she did it. And
[5:07] Speaker 1: I'm truly interested in hearing from you and hearing why.
[5:11] Speaker 1: But again, that's the point here. Why? Why do people
[5:15] Speaker 1: think this? Okay, she's outrageous. There's a lot of outrageous
[5:18] Speaker 1: rock stars. Does that make them killers? No, it does not.
[5:24] Speaker 1: But Courtney Love, she just scratches this particular itch for
[5:27] Speaker 1: people that is unique. She's truly hated. And I try
[5:34] Speaker 1: to not hate anybody, like nobody. I just don't believe
[5:38] Speaker 1: in hate. I don't like saying that word. I'm not
[5:41] Speaker 1: trying to get up on a moral high horse here,
[5:43] Speaker 1: but I try to get at like, okay, why is
[5:47] Speaker 1: this person doing this ridiculous stuff? And to me, Courtney
[5:50] Speaker 1: Love just strikes me as a very cold and calculating
[5:55] Speaker 1: Machiavellian type of entertainer, of which there are many in history.
[5:59] Speaker 1: And I know you're hearing these words come out of
[6:01] Speaker 1: my mouth and you're going, dude, listen to what you're saying.
[6:04] Speaker 1: These are the exact qualities of a killer. Well, it
[6:06] Speaker 1: takes a lot to kill somebody and get away with it.
[6:08] Speaker 1: A real lot, especially in the public eye, especially when
[6:11] Speaker 1: you're someone like Courtney Love. Especially when Kurt Cobain is
[6:13] Speaker 1: one of the biggest rock stars in the history of
[6:16] Speaker 1: rock and roll, in the history of pop, in the
[6:18] Speaker 1: history of entertainment. So it just doesn't stand. It just
[6:26] Speaker 1: does not pass the smell test. None of the evidence does.
[6:30] Speaker 1: And I wish I woke up this morning and had
[6:33] Speaker 1: the time to go through all the evidence again and
[6:35] Speaker 1: come here. And maybe that's what I should do. I
[6:39] Speaker 1: should actually– I've been planning on doing this Courtney Love
[6:43] Speaker 1: episode for some time. And I'm waiting for this documentary
[6:45] Speaker 1: to come out so that I have more information, more
[6:48] Speaker 1: of the story. Because I know there's going to be
[6:50] Speaker 1: real revelatory stuff in that film. And it was supposed
[6:56] Speaker 1: to be out. By now, it's not. So I keep
[6:58] Speaker 1: punting this episode down. down the line. But maybe what
[7:02] Speaker 1: I should do instead, maybe what the audience is telling
[7:05] Speaker 1: me here is I should actually litigate the facts in
[7:09] Speaker 1: an episode in a really open-minded way, in a way
[7:15] Speaker 1: that not necessarily to prove my point, but to unpack
[7:19] Speaker 1: my point and pressure test my point. Because I'm truly...
[7:28] Speaker 1: My jaw's on the floor at this reaction. I don't
[7:33] Speaker 1: mean to laugh, but it is kind of funny when
[7:34] Speaker 1: you read these comments. Now, of all the rock stars
[7:40] Speaker 1: throughout history, Courtney Love is singular. But if I had
[7:47] Speaker 1: to choose one rock star to compare her to, and
[7:51] Speaker 1: it has... Nothing to do with her relationship with Kurt Cobain.
[7:55] Speaker 1: It has nothing to do with the death of Kurt
[7:57] Speaker 1: Cobain and how he died. If I had one rock
[8:00] Speaker 1: star to compare Courtney Love to, it would be Sid Vicious.
[8:06] Speaker 1: Courtney Love is a better musician. She's a better songwriter,
[8:09] Speaker 1: of course. But as far as being an entertainer, being
[8:13] Speaker 1: a rock star, behaving like a rock star, Sid is
[8:18] Speaker 1: the best comp. Because Sid was completely outrageous as well
[8:22] Speaker 1: and said things just to get a rise out of
[8:24] Speaker 1: people and just to get attention and all those sort
[8:26] Speaker 1: of things that Courtney, I believe Courtney learned them from
[8:29] Speaker 1: Sid Vicious, from watching Sid Vicious. And there's some irony
[8:32] Speaker 1: here too, because Courtney Love is in Sid and Nancy.
[8:37] Speaker 1: But you don't get, it's interesting because Sid is caught
[8:40] Speaker 1: up in this murder mystery as well with Nancy, but
[8:45] Speaker 1: you do not get this hatred anymore. for Sid that
[8:49] Speaker 1: you get for Courtney Love. And I want to know why.
[8:53] Speaker 1: I mean, he did truly outrageous. The guy wore a
[8:57] Speaker 1: swastika for the entirety of his career, okay? I mean,
[9:01] Speaker 1: I get the context, okay? So, you know, OG punk rockers,
[9:05] Speaker 1: don't come at me for being critical of that. I'm
[9:07] Speaker 1: just pointing it out. There's a lot. My point is
[9:10] Speaker 1: that there's a lot there with Sid that could drive
[9:14] Speaker 1: you fucking crazy and cause you to be super critical
[9:17] Speaker 1: of the guy and perhaps come up with, I don't know,
[9:20] Speaker 1: wild conspiracy theories or not even, I mean, the stuff
[9:23] Speaker 1: with Nancy, it's a stone cold whodunit with Nancy, I think.
[9:27] Speaker 1: And we're going to get into that later as well.
[9:29] Speaker 1: Of course, we touched on Sid and Nancy before, but
[9:32] Speaker 1: you know, if you talk to old school, New York
[9:35] Speaker 1: punk rockers and hardcore kids, they all have a very
[9:40] Speaker 1: clear idea of who killed Nancy. And, um, I'm interested
[9:46] Speaker 1: in unpacking that, but I'm getting off topic. Why don't
[9:52] Speaker 1: people hate Sid Vicious the way that they hate Courtney Love?
[9:58] Speaker 1: What is it? I mean, is it misogyny? Is it
[10:02] Speaker 1: because he's a man, he's not a woman? I don't
[10:04] Speaker 1: think so. I don't think those of you who listen
[10:06] Speaker 1: to this podcast and are disgracing listeners and are convinced
[10:10] Speaker 1: that Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain, I don't think you're misogynist. Now,
[10:17] Speaker 1: could a large portion of the people in the disgrace
[10:20] Speaker 1: land comments on Instagram. Could that be at the core
[10:23] Speaker 1: of their belief? Perhaps. I don't know. I haven't really
[10:28] Speaker 1: dug into it. Maybe I will. There's just something about her,
[10:34] Speaker 1: or maybe there's not. Maybe I'm looking at it the
[10:35] Speaker 1: wrong way. Maybe it's because there's something about Kurt. Kurt
[10:40] Speaker 1: Cobain is a lot different than Nancy Spungen. Kurt Cobain
[10:44] Speaker 1: is at least for our generation, for Gen X, there
[10:48] Speaker 1: was nobody more important. There was nobody bigger. There was
[10:52] Speaker 1: nobody who reached as many people. There was nobody who
[10:55] Speaker 1: had the cultural impact in music. He was our John Lennon,
[11:02] Speaker 1: our Bob Dylan. He was all of it rolled into one.
[11:07] Speaker 1: And I do think there's something psychologically with music fans
[11:11] Speaker 1: where they cannot let go. I see this with Michael
[11:15] Speaker 1: Jackson fans. I see this with Elvis Presley fans and
[11:17] Speaker 1: I see it with Kurt Cobain fans. It's a little
[11:20] Speaker 1: different than it is with, I don't know, like, you know,
[11:25] Speaker 1: Lane Staley fans or pick it Tom Petty. You know
[11:31] Speaker 1: what I mean? Not that those guys weren't great. They were,
[11:33] Speaker 1: they're truly incredible, but they weren't Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson level.
[11:39] Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? And maybe that has something
[11:42] Speaker 1: to do with it. Maybe in the absence of actually
[11:47] Speaker 1: dealing with our sort of icon grief, we cannot accept
[11:52] Speaker 1: the fact that the answer is the answer. We don't
[11:56] Speaker 1: want to accept it because then it prompts another level
[12:01] Speaker 1: of letting go. And if we can hang on to
[12:05] Speaker 1: the I don't want to call it a conspiracy, but
[12:08] Speaker 1: if we can hang on to these, I guess it
[12:09] Speaker 1: is a conspiracy. We can hang on to these alternate theories,
[12:12] Speaker 1: whatever you want to call them about their deaths. We
[12:15] Speaker 1: can keep their, their stories alive and we can, the
[12:18] Speaker 1: myth certainly grows. And maybe that's on some sort of
[12:22] Speaker 1: subconscious psychological level, what's happening here. Or maybe people just
[12:27] Speaker 1: think Courtney Love is a fucking crazy person and, and,
[12:31] Speaker 1: and contains a capacity to, to do something like murder
[12:34] Speaker 1: her husband and get away with it for all these
[12:36] Speaker 1: years publicly, which I have a lot of respect for
[12:41] Speaker 1: Courtney Love. That might shock a lot of you, but
[12:44] Speaker 1: I don't have that level of respect for her cunningness
[12:48] Speaker 1: to think that she could pull that off. But again,
[12:51] Speaker 1: I'm going to look into it more fully. I'm going
[12:53] Speaker 1: to respect the people who are showing me no respect
[12:58] Speaker 1: in the comments, and I'm going to dig into this
[13:02] Speaker 1: and see if I have some sort of artist bias,
[13:05] Speaker 1: historical bias, whatever type of bias and see if I'm
[13:09] Speaker 1: wrong here. See if, see if I'm going to look
[13:11] Speaker 1: at this information again. I've looked at it. Like I said,
[13:16] Speaker 1: Matt really looked at it. He really went at that
[13:18] Speaker 1: dossier of info that came out about 18 months ago.
[13:21] Speaker 1: And we had a big, big talk about it. I'm
[13:24] Speaker 1: going to even watch fucking soaked in bleach again. And
[13:28] Speaker 1: that knucklehead from the mentors and that whole theory And
[13:32] Speaker 1: I'm going to entertain, I guess, all the stuff about
[13:35] Speaker 1: her dad, even though just because you were associated with
[13:37] Speaker 1: the Grateful Dead does not make you a member of
[13:40] Speaker 1: the CIA. I'm going to look into all of this,
[13:43] Speaker 1: I think. But most important, I want to hear from
[13:46] Speaker 1: you guys. I want to hear from you listeners who
[13:49] Speaker 1: don't normally engage and who think that Courtney killed Kurt.
[13:55] Speaker 1: And I want to know why. And there's no stupid
[13:58] Speaker 1: answer here, okay? There are no stupid questions. There are
[14:01] Speaker 1: no stupid answers. I really want to understand this because
[14:04] Speaker 1: it's some sort of phenomenon that's unique to rock and
[14:07] Speaker 1: roll history. And it's fascinating to me. I thought I
[14:10] Speaker 1: was done with it. I'm not. So there's that. If
[14:12] Speaker 1: you're not on Instagram and you're not following Disgraceland at DisgracelandPod,
[14:17] Speaker 1: you want to see what I'm talking about. There's maybe
[14:21] Speaker 1: four posts about Kurt and Courtney over the last week.
[14:24] Speaker 1: And there's one carousel post, which is this post that's
[14:28] Speaker 1: like a series of images of And it's a little
[14:30] Speaker 1: story that we tell along with the images, pictures, and quotes.
[14:35] Speaker 1: And that's the one that really, really got people going.
[14:39] Speaker 1: Check that out. Let me know what you think. And
[14:41] Speaker 1: email me at disgracelandpod. And I want to get into
[14:43] Speaker 1: these theories. I want to get into your thoughts. And
[14:46] Speaker 1: I want them to inform the episode that I'll probably
[14:49] Speaker 1: start to put together within the next sort of four
[14:51] Speaker 1: to six weeks, I'm guessing. And it'll be a straight
[14:54] Speaker 1: up whodunit. Obviously, we covered a lot of ground in
[14:58] Speaker 1: the Nirvana story thus far. I'm not going to retread that.
[15:02] Speaker 1: I'm just going to get into the actual death and
[15:05] Speaker 1: the theory that Courtney killed Kurt. Now, as outrageous as
[15:11] Speaker 1: this theory is, there are more outrageous theories from rock
[15:15] Speaker 1: and roll history. Truly weird, unhinged, completely ludicrous ideas about
[15:23] Speaker 1: rock stars. I've had my fun with some of these
[15:27] Speaker 1: theories before in the past. The idea that John Denver
[15:31] Speaker 1: was one of Vietnam's most prolific American assassins. The idea
[15:37] Speaker 1: that Jim Morrison is the Zodiac killer. I kind of
[15:39] Speaker 1: made that up. There's some other ones. The notion, some
[15:43] Speaker 1: people think Stevie Wonder can see. Some people think that
[15:46] Speaker 1: Jay-Z is a vampire. We're going to get into you.
[15:49] Speaker 1: some of the more outrageous rockstar conspiracy theories and have
[15:53] Speaker 1: some fun with this in the exclusive section of this episode.
[15:57] Speaker 1: Go to disgracingpod.com to sign up, become an all-access member,
[16:01] Speaker 1: unlock exclusive content just like this, plus ad-free listening. Zeth
[16:04] Speaker 1: and I will be in there momentarily, and we will
[16:08] Speaker 1: be giving you all this insanity and more. All right,
[16:12] Speaker 1: so talking Kurt and Courtney because they're in the Rewind
[16:15] Speaker 1: feed this last week, and then we released our New
[16:19] Speaker 1: episode on Screamin' Jay Hawkins this past Tuesday. Coming up
[16:23] Speaker 1: after this after party, guys, we've got a Rewind episode
[16:25] Speaker 1: on Eminem. That's going to, now that I think about it,
[16:30] Speaker 1: that's going to cause some problems as well. But Screamin'
[16:34] Speaker 1: Jay Hawkins fathered 57 children. Did you guys know this?
[16:40] Speaker 1: It's part of rock and roll mythology for sure. And
[16:42] Speaker 1: it's something that came out, I don't know, decade or
[16:45] Speaker 1: two ago. It always fascinated me. 57 children. When Jay
[16:50] Speaker 1: Hawkins died, it was revealed that those children were out
[16:53] Speaker 1: there and most of them were illegitimate and unknown to him.
[16:57] Speaker 1: A friend of his asked Screamin' Jay if he ever
[17:01] Speaker 1: sent his children money and Screamin' Jay responded, well, that's
[17:04] Speaker 1: the mother's problem. Solid dude that he is. Screamin' Jay
[17:09] Speaker 1: Hawkins is one of these guys who bounced between record
[17:11] Speaker 1: labels a as much as he bounced between wives and
[17:14] Speaker 1: girlfriends in one-night stands. And when he was on his deathbed,
[17:18] Speaker 1: he supposedly asked a new friend of his, an investment banker,
[17:23] Speaker 1: to track down all 57 of his children. So the
[17:28] Speaker 1: banker set up a website called jayskids.com and received upwards
[17:33] Speaker 1: of 2,500 submissions from people claiming to be Screamin' Jay Hawkins' progeny.
[17:39] Speaker 1: So approximately one year later, after Screamin' Jay's death, a
[17:44] Speaker 1: total of 36 legitimate children had been identified. But not
[17:51] Speaker 1: one of them went to his funeral. Now, to his
[17:56] Speaker 1: three legitimate children that he knew of, the children that
[17:59] Speaker 1: he had with his first wife, Anna Mae, Screamin' Jay
[18:02] Speaker 1: Hawkins left $ 1 each. This is... fucking crazy. I don't
[18:10] Speaker 1: understand the $ 1 thing. I really don't. Why leave them anything?
[18:16] Speaker 1: Is it just a diss? Is it a way of
[18:18] Speaker 1: being cute? Or was it legitimately a heartfelt, I got
[18:22] Speaker 1: nothing and I want to show them I care? It's
[18:26] Speaker 1: really fascinating to me. Screaming Jay Hawkins is completely fascinating
[18:30] Speaker 1: to me. You can hear all about him in the
[18:31] Speaker 1: new episode if you haven't already. Perfectly timed for the
[18:35] Speaker 1: spooky Halloween season that we have just entered. as is
[18:39] Speaker 1: the Eminem episode. Now, Elvis Presley died on the toilet.
[18:42] Speaker 1: Eminem launched his career on the toilet. Gross. I know,
[18:45] Speaker 1: grosser than the Constipation Blues song we were talking about
[18:47] Speaker 1: last week, but it is true. It was Christmas. It
[18:50] Speaker 1: was also Eminem's daughter's birthday, and Em was broke and
[18:53] Speaker 1: back in his mom's trailer. And he was constipated and
[18:56] Speaker 1: on the toilet, and he took notice of how skinny
[18:58] Speaker 1: he was, and inspiration struck. Skinny, slim, slim, shady, slim, shady.
[19:04] Speaker 1: He grabbed a nearby pen and notebook and the lines
[19:07] Speaker 1: just flowed out of him page after page of words
[19:09] Speaker 1: that became the song that would help Eminem break through
[19:12] Speaker 1: and launch his career. More than that, the Slim Shady
[19:16] Speaker 1: alter ego concept that Em conceived on the can gave
[19:19] Speaker 1: Eminem the creative shield that he needed to explore incredibly
[19:23] Speaker 1: dark themes in his raps. Themes that attracted millions of
[19:27] Speaker 1: listeners and led to his 1999 Slim Shady album going
[19:30] Speaker 1: quadruple platinum. And it all started, well, Now you know
[19:34] Speaker 1: where it started. More on Eminem in this upcoming archive
[19:38] Speaker 1: episode of the Disgrace Sam podcast. That's hitting this weekend
[19:41] Speaker 1: in the feed. Then after that on Tuesday, our new
[19:45] Speaker 1: episode on As I Lay Dying. And we're asking the question,
[19:49] Speaker 1: is this Christian music scene full of phony faith leaders? Now,
[19:54] Speaker 1: Tim Lambisa, singer for the Christian metalcore band As I
[19:56] Speaker 1: Lay Dying, the front man. This is a band, guys,
[20:00] Speaker 1: that would regularly pray with their fans after shows. Now he,
[20:05] Speaker 1: this front man, Tim Lambisa of As I Lay Dying,
[20:07] Speaker 1: admitted to being an atheist, and he claimed that the
[20:10] Speaker 1: majority of Christian metal bands that he toured with were
[20:12] Speaker 1: not actually Christian. What he said was that only 1
[20:15] Speaker 1: in 10 of the bands in the scene were actually
[20:19] Speaker 1: sincere about their faith, and that the rest were fake Christians. Now,
[20:24] Speaker 1: Tim Lambisa's band, As I Lay Dying, they weren't some
[20:27] Speaker 1: fringe act. They were nominated for a Grammy, they released
[20:30] Speaker 1: an album that charted in the top 10, and all
[20:32] Speaker 1: of that was because of their devoted fans, Christian fans
[20:36] Speaker 1: who believed in the band's faith-based message. But the story
[20:40] Speaker 1: of Tim Lambesis in As I Lay Dying, it's not
[20:41] Speaker 1: just about Christianity and whether or not people are charlatans,
[20:45] Speaker 1: it's about murder. Because in 2013, Lambesis was arrested after
[20:50] Speaker 1: paying an undercover cop disguised as a hitman to kill
[20:55] Speaker 1: his wife. Obviously not a very Christian thing to do.
[20:58] Speaker 1: We get into the story of Tim Lambesis in As
[21:00] Speaker 1: I Lay Dying and the whole Christian metal scene in
[21:02] Speaker 1: the new episode of Disgrace Land. So do not miss that.
[21:04] Speaker 1: That's coming on Tuesday. And when you're listening to this
[21:08] Speaker 1: As I Lay Dying episode, what I want to know
[21:10] Speaker 1: from you guys, what music do you listen to that
[21:14] Speaker 1: compels you to think about faith? I don't mean something
[21:18] Speaker 1: that's converted you to a religion. That's not what I'm saying.
[21:21] Speaker 1: I personally believe that the mystery of faith is something
[21:24] Speaker 1: to be contemplated. It's something to be confronted. Okay? And
[21:29] Speaker 1: a lot of music has done that for me. I
[21:31] Speaker 1: think about Dylan's Christian album, Slow Train of Coming. For
[21:35] Speaker 1: some reason, I think of Moby's play. That record always
[21:38] Speaker 1: kind of makes me think about my faith and think
[21:40] Speaker 1: about faith in general, I should say. I think about
[21:45] Speaker 1: gospel bluegrass music. I tend to listen to that a
[21:48] Speaker 1: lot on Sunday mornings. And it's all for this reason.
[21:51] Speaker 1: It's kind of propelling me in this direction to think
[21:54] Speaker 1: about faith. So what music does that for you? Is
[21:58] Speaker 1: it As I Lay Dying? I don't think so. It's
[22:00] Speaker 1: not for me anyways. But what music do you listen
[22:03] Speaker 1: to that has pushed you to confront faith, to think
[22:06] Speaker 1: about faith? And it's a little heavy, but I don't care. 617-906-6638,
[22:09] Speaker 1: voicemail and text. Get at me. We'll get into it.
[22:14] Speaker 1: You might hear yourself in next week's episode of the
[22:17] Speaker 1: Disgraceland After Party. You can always DM me at DisgracelandPod
[22:20] Speaker 1: on the socials as well. DisgracelandPod at gmail.com on email.
[22:25] Speaker 1: I'll be back right after this. with your answers to
[22:27] Speaker 1: last week's question of the week, your voicemails, texts, all
[22:29] Speaker 1: that stuff. Hang on. All right, guys, welcome back. Let's
[22:44] Speaker 1: get straight into your calls. 617-906-6638, voicemail and text. This
[22:51] Speaker 1: one comes from the 903 on the subject of Screamin'
[22:54] Speaker 1: Jay Hawkins.
[22:55] Speaker 2: Hey, Jake. Adam from Texas, now in Maryland. Excuse me,
[22:59] Speaker 2: Jay Hawkins. I can't help but remember you said that
[23:03] Speaker 2: he was addicted to codeine at one point. I can
[23:07] Speaker 2: block his bowels, too. So, obviously, he died of a
[23:09] Speaker 2: blocked bowel. I would guess the codeine addiction had something
[23:12] Speaker 2: to do with it more than anything. But, as you said,
[23:15] Speaker 2: we don't know because everybody you look, you hear a
[23:17] Speaker 2: different story. So, us in our current factory thing, what
[23:23] Speaker 2: we feel might be right. Must be right, of course,
[23:26] Speaker 2: in the way things go these days. Just my only
[23:29] Speaker 2: thought on that. Great episode, otherwise. Just insane on the
[23:34] Speaker 2: 54 kids. I don't even know what to say about that.
[23:37] Speaker 1: Anyway, love the episode. Love the show. Rock and roll up. Out. Adam,
[23:43] Speaker 1: thanks for the call, my man. Appreciate you. 54 kids,
[23:45] Speaker 1: 56 kids, 57 kids, 36 kids. Whatever it was, it
[23:47] Speaker 1: was a lot of kids. which is just crazy. And
[23:53] Speaker 1: I feel for those kids who hopefully some of them
[23:55] Speaker 1: found a dad elsewhere somehow. Yeah, the coding, intestinal blockage
[24:02] Speaker 1: as well. A lot of intestinal blockage talk over these
[24:05] Speaker 1: weeks in this Graceland. Who knows? Who knows how Jay died?
[24:11] Speaker 1: Wouldn't it be ironic if one of his kids did
[24:12] Speaker 1: him in? Let's go to Kelly in the 7-8 one. Hey, Jake.
[24:18] Speaker 3: This is Kelly from the 781. I have not called
[24:21] Speaker 3: in a while. I'm sorry.
[24:22] Speaker 1: I was just.
[24:23] Speaker 3: Re-listening to the Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love episodes again,
[24:27] Speaker 3: and I'm just calling about your question. Did Courtney Love
[24:31] Speaker 3: kill Kurt Cobain? And I think absolutely no. And I
[24:36] Speaker 3: am down for conspiracy. I think that, as they say
[24:40] Speaker 3: on another podcast I listen to, the difference between a
[24:43] Speaker 3: conspiracy and the truth is six months. And really, that's
[24:47] Speaker 3: how it's been lately with all the craziness. But no,
[24:50] Speaker 3: I have never thought that she killed him. I always
[24:52] Speaker 3: thought that was ludicrous. Why would she kill him, number one?
[24:56] Speaker 3: What did she gain from that? I mean, she had
[24:58] Speaker 3: her own money. She had whatever.
[24:59] Speaker 2: She loved him.
[25:00] Speaker 3: She did not kill him. I think that's ridiculous.
[25:05] Speaker 2: Macarola.
[25:06] Speaker 1: Kelly, the voice of reason. Appreciate you calling in. I'm
[25:09] Speaker 1: with you. I do not think Courtney Love. Obviously, we
[25:12] Speaker 1: talked about this earlier. I want to get into the specifics, though,
[25:15] Speaker 1: and I'm going to unpack this for the people who
[25:17] Speaker 1: do think so. 617-906-6638, voicemail and text. We can keep
[25:22] Speaker 1: talking about Courtney Love. We can talk about Jay Hawkins.
[25:24] Speaker 1: We can talk about anything you want to talk about.
[25:27] Speaker 1: 302 writes in, and 302 is very angry. Says, Jake,
[25:30] Speaker 1: my friend, if your question of the week isn't, are
[25:32] Speaker 1: you one of Screamin' Jay's kids, then we as a
[25:36] Speaker 1: disgraced land society don't deserve shit. I don't quite understand
[25:41] Speaker 1: what that means, 302, but a lot of passion there.
[25:45] Speaker 1: Are you one of Screamin' J's kids?
[25:49] Speaker 3: 617-906-6638.
[25:49] Speaker 1: Voicemail and text. Get back and let me know. 405
[25:52] Speaker 1: writes in, after a long hiatus that life often imposes
[25:56] Speaker 1: on us all, I have had a lot of catching
[25:58] Speaker 1: up to do. And while I'm late to the game,
[26:01] Speaker 1: I had an existential experience in listening to your piece
[26:04] Speaker 1: on Patti Smith. I listen to a lot of podcasts
[26:07] Speaker 1: and you always bring your A game, but your work
[26:09] Speaker 1: on Patti Smith took me to a place in my
[26:11] Speaker 1: mind in the universe that is only reserved when that
[26:13] Speaker 1: rare moment of clarity hits. You recently spoke of the
[26:17] Speaker 1: new mediums for good writers and your episode on Patti
[26:19] Speaker 1: Smith is up there with the great pieces. And wow,
[26:22] Speaker 1: thank you. In modern, that's me saying thank you. Goes
[26:26] Speaker 1: on to say, is up there with the great pieces
[26:28] Speaker 1: in modern pop culture literature in the New Yorker, Rolling Stone,
[26:32] Speaker 1: and those other magazine rack grabs that molded the youth
[26:34] Speaker 1: of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Don't stop writing. Rockarola,
[26:38] Speaker 1: the Notorious R.D.G. from the 405. Notorious R.D.G. Thank you
[26:44] Speaker 1: so much. Really cool of you to say. I appreciate that. Yeah,
[26:50] Speaker 1: that episode was nominated for a Signal Award. If you
[26:54] Speaker 1: guys want Disgraceland to win, as I do, because like
[26:58] Speaker 1: I said, once you get nominated for an award, it's
[27:00] Speaker 1: a double-edged sword. You don't want to lose. I hate
[27:02] Speaker 1: fucking losing. I don't like the concept of, oh, it's
[27:05] Speaker 1: just nice to be considered. Fuck that. I want to win.
[27:09] Speaker 1: So help me win. Help us win. Go to the website, SignalAward.com.
[27:16] Speaker 1: Big button right there. Click vote now. You can find
[27:19] Speaker 1: Disgraceland nominated for Best Writing and Best Music. Thank you,
[27:24] Speaker 1: Matt Bowden. Thank you, Sean Cahalan. Thank you, Ryan Spraker,
[27:26] Speaker 1: for all the amazing work you guys do on the
[27:29] Speaker 1: music for Disgraceland. And I like that you're being acknowledged
[27:33] Speaker 1: here as well as my writing. And thanks for the
[27:36] Speaker 1: kind words. I really appreciate it, RDG. That is, you know,
[27:41] Speaker 1: I'm humbled. I truly am. Helltown Mark from the 978
[27:45] Speaker 1: writes in, hey, didn't really expect to be adding a
[27:48] Speaker 1: blues song about constipation today, but here we are. And
[27:52] Speaker 1: there's a screenshot of Helltown Mark's phone where he's selecting
[27:58] Speaker 1: Constipation Blues and adding it to the Disgraceland Songs playlist. Mark,
[28:02] Speaker 1: do me a favor and call in and leave us
[28:04] Speaker 1: a voicemail. You're great on the text, but I want
[28:07] Speaker 1: a voicemail and I want you to explain to the
[28:08] Speaker 1: people what this is so that I can explain it
[28:11] Speaker 1: more fully. I'm getting hit up on Instagram. People are
[28:13] Speaker 1: asking about this playlist and I want to let them
[28:15] Speaker 1: know exactly what it is and where they can find it. Um, uh,
[28:20] Speaker 1: this is, uh, an ongoing thing. I get at least
[28:23] Speaker 1: one message per week. So call back 617-906-6638 voicemail and text.
[28:28] Speaker 1: 416 writes in on our Quincy Jones episode. Hey, great
[28:34] Speaker 1: Q episode. I really identified with what you said at
[28:36] Speaker 1: the beginning of the after party episode all throughout high school.
[28:39] Speaker 1: I was told you're going to become a writer. You're
[28:41] Speaker 1: going to write stuff. What did I do? I became
[28:43] Speaker 1: a clinical psychologist, researcher, and professor. Turns out I write
[28:49] Speaker 1: for a living. It started with the BA, the MA,
[28:51] Speaker 1: the PhD dissertation. When people say, oh, you're a psychologist,
[28:55] Speaker 1: what do you do? I reply, paperwork. I see my
[28:57] Speaker 1: job as trying to tell the client's story through these
[28:59] Speaker 1: very long reports, but I tell them that my job
[29:02] Speaker 1: is not to get it right. My job is to
[29:03] Speaker 1: get it right for them. Now, of course, people tell
[29:05] Speaker 1: me I should have a podcast because I love telling stories.
[29:08] Speaker 1: This is the way of the world now. This is
[29:10] Speaker 1: how you get your stories out. This is how you
[29:12] Speaker 1: speak your truth about life. Rock-a-rola. Well, Jason in the 416,
[29:15] Speaker 1: this is a Very interesting text. You sound highly educated
[29:21] Speaker 1: and I'm glad that you're getting your money's worth and
[29:25] Speaker 1: that you finally became a writer in a roundabout way,
[29:29] Speaker 1: just like I did. It's crazy how these things happen.
[29:33] Speaker 3: All right.
[29:33] Speaker 1: 617-906-6638. Voicemail and text. Get at me. Leave a voicemail.
[29:36] Speaker 1: I'll a text. Recommend some episodes. Give me your answers
[29:43] Speaker 1: to the question of the week. What music inspires you
[29:47] Speaker 1: to confront or contemplate your faith? I know it's heavy,
[29:51] Speaker 1: but who gives a shit? Let's get into it. We
[29:53] Speaker 1: know each other. We've known each other for a while.
[29:56] Speaker 1: It's been a while since I've been out there. And
[30:01] Speaker 1: I'm getting out there, getting out there in the new year.
[30:05] Speaker 1: It's going to happen. Get this cruise planned and we're
[30:09] Speaker 1: going to be staging a live version of Disgraceland. Haven't
[30:14] Speaker 1: done a live show in a while. We're going to
[30:16] Speaker 1: be doing it on a ship. Version voyages. Zeth and
[30:21] Speaker 1: I going to be taping, filming, perhaps a live episode
[30:25] Speaker 1: of the Disgraceland podcast and after party. And we need
[30:30] Speaker 1: you there. Okay. We're going to make this disco centric.
[30:35] Speaker 1: This cruise does not happen until March 20th, 2027. So
[30:38] Speaker 1: you got some time and this would make just a
[30:40] Speaker 1: fantastic Christmas present. Okay. For you and your girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, whatever, buddy, pal.
[30:48] Speaker 1: I don't know. You're just Graceland fans. Just come on out.
[30:51] Speaker 1: And if you order now, if you book now, I
[30:54] Speaker 1: should say, you can score up to a thousand bucks
[30:56] Speaker 1: in savings, 70% off. 70% off your, what they're calling
[31:03] Speaker 1: second sailor. It sounds fun. Not as fun as the
[31:06] Speaker 1: first sailor. I imagine that means the person you're going
[31:09] Speaker 1: with gets 70% off and you get a $ 300 onboard
[31:14] Speaker 1: credit that I'm sure you can put towards all kinds
[31:16] Speaker 1: of stuff on the ship. Go to virginvoyages.com slash true
[31:20] Speaker 1: crime and grab your spot. This is going to sell out.
[31:23] Speaker 1: This is March 20th, 2027. We're sailing out of Miami.
[31:28] Speaker 1: And we're heading to Grand Turk. It's going to be
[31:31] Speaker 1: five nights. And it's not just going to be me.
[31:34] Speaker 1: It's going to be me and Zeth, like I said.
[31:36] Speaker 1: But it's also going to be the Buried Bones podcast.
[31:38] Speaker 1: That's an Exactly Right Network podcast. And it's going to
[31:40] Speaker 1: be Wisecrack. Wisecrack is the podcast of the year, last year.
[31:47] Speaker 1: Very big show. Again, Five Night Cruise begins March 20th, 2027.
[31:51] Speaker 1: There'll be all kinds of stuff going on besides the show.
[31:54] Speaker 1: I'm going to be hanging out. Zeth's going to be
[31:56] Speaker 1: hanging out. me all kinds of true crime themed happenings
[32:00] Speaker 1: on board, podcast recordings, behind the scenes sessions, meet and greets,
[32:04] Speaker 1: all that stuff. Again, you book now, you're going to
[32:08] Speaker 1: get $ 1, 000 in instant savings, 70% off your second sailor,
[32:13] Speaker 1: which is not your first mate, and up to $ 300
[32:16] Speaker 1: of on board credit. Okay. Go to www.virginvoyages.com slash true crime,
[32:23] Speaker 1: book your ticket, book passage as they say, pick out
[32:28] Speaker 1: a good Hawaiian shirt, and let's get into this. All right,
[32:31] Speaker 1: I will be back in a flash with your emails.
[32:34] Speaker 1: Don't go anywhere. All right, guys, disgracelandpod at gmail.com. Hit
[32:50] Speaker 1: me with your emails. This one comes from Neil Gillis.
[32:52] Speaker 1: Neil Gillis, the subject is ranking dread episode. Suggestion, ranking dread.
[32:59] Speaker 1: Story has everything. Sound system, clashes, political riots, fleeing multiple countries,
[33:05] Speaker 1: bringing the yards from Jamaica to the UK, Canada, and US.
[33:09] Speaker 1: And he made great music. Tell me Fatty Boom Boom
[33:12] Speaker 1: is not great music. Rock-a-rola. Ranking dread. Neil, I am.
[33:18] Speaker 1: Embarrassed to say, I don't know what the hell you're
[33:20] Speaker 1: talking about, but the passion in this email is such
[33:22] Speaker 1: that I'm going to note it and I'm going to
[33:25] Speaker 1: put this on the list. This is something that sounds
[33:28] Speaker 1: like it would allow us, I need a way into
[33:31] Speaker 1: Jamaican music that is not Bob Marley or Peter Tosh.
[33:36] Speaker 1: And this sounds like it might be it. And I'm
[33:39] Speaker 1: very interested. Robbie Thringwright saying, hey, Jake, it's your neighbor
[33:43] Speaker 1: in the upstairs apartment. Have you, what, what the fuck
[33:46] Speaker 1: are you talking about? Robbie goes on to say, have
[33:48] Speaker 1: you watched Last Stop yet? And no, it's not a
[33:51] Speaker 1: Western or an old TMC classic. Think more along the
[33:54] Speaker 1: lines of Tarantino. Just watch it. I guarantee you'll like it.
[33:59] Speaker 1: If you don't, I'll buy you a pint of moose
[34:00] Speaker 1: head next time you're in Toronto. Also, oh, I get
[34:03] Speaker 1: upstairs apartment. Now I get he's in Canada. Robbie, I
[34:06] Speaker 1: like how you did that. I like how you did that.
[34:07] Speaker 1: You didn't explain it. Robbie goes on to say, also
[34:10] Speaker 1: another point, I just discovered this band, the Silver Apples
[34:12] Speaker 1: from 1968. They sound like nothing from that era. They
[34:16] Speaker 1: were so far ahead of their time. It's incredible. They
[34:18] Speaker 1: were a synth rock band before there was synth. Anyhow,
[34:21] Speaker 1: check them out after you've watched The Last Stop. Cheers
[34:23] Speaker 1: from the 519 in Waterloo, Canada. Love these recommendations. You
[34:27] Speaker 1: guys are killing it this week. Robbie, great job. Silver Apples,
[34:30] Speaker 1: I've heard of them. Never checked them out, but I'm
[34:33] Speaker 1: excited to check them out and do that today, actually. 1968, huh?
[34:38] Speaker 1: Synth before there was synth. And The Last Stop. You
[34:41] Speaker 1: didn't give me much to go on here, but... I
[34:44] Speaker 1: don't know. There's something about the way you wrote this
[34:46] Speaker 1: that I feel like you're a guy I need to
[34:47] Speaker 1: pay attention to, Robbie. So I'm going to check out
[34:50] Speaker 1: the last stop. All right. At least I'm going to
[34:52] Speaker 1: talk to Zeth about it. See if he's got a take.
[34:57] Speaker 1: And then I'll dive in. Maybe. Perhaps. I think. Let's see.
[35:01] Speaker 1: In any event, I really appreciate the message. Disgracelandpod at gmail.com.
[35:06] Speaker 1: You guys want to hit us up about anything over email,
[35:09] Speaker 1: that's the way to do it. Heather the Yinzer on
[35:11] Speaker 1: Patreon writes, Hey, what happened to the old rock stars
[35:15] Speaker 1: with no fucks to give content? Well, I don't really know.
[35:19] Speaker 1: I'm reading this comment out of context, so it's hard
[35:21] Speaker 1: for me to tell Heather, but I'm going to look
[35:22] Speaker 1: into that. Pete on Patreon writes, Feast of the Mau
[35:25] Speaker 1: Mau makes I Put a Spell on You sound like
[35:27] Speaker 1: a Celine Dion jam. Feast of the Mau Mau is
[35:31] Speaker 1: a Screamin' Jay Hawkins song, for those of you who
[35:34] Speaker 1: are interested. Thank you, Pete. Tim on Patreon writes in, hey,
[35:37] Speaker 1: is it me or does this episode just sound different?
[35:40] Speaker 1: More natural, less bass or decibels or something. Sounds good,
[35:44] Speaker 1: just different.
[35:46] Speaker 3: I don't know.
[35:47] Speaker 1: Tim, maybe it's your settings or maybe Matt did something different. Matt,
[35:51] Speaker 1: did you do something different? Let us know. All right, guys,
[35:54] Speaker 1: it's October. We're nearing the end of the year. We
[35:55] Speaker 1: got to get together and figure out what episodes we
[35:57] Speaker 1: are going to produce for next year. This is talking
[36:00] Speaker 1: directly to the discos who are part of the Sound
[36:03] Speaker 1: and Fury community. membership in our All Access Club. We've
[36:08] Speaker 1: got a episode of this film we have to produce
[36:13] Speaker 1: next week. Perhaps we can hook something up for the
[36:15] Speaker 1: week after for a Zoom where we can all jump
[36:19] Speaker 1: on and you can bring your recommendations and we can
[36:22] Speaker 1: have a more of a sort of organized discussion about
[36:25] Speaker 1: what we want to produce for next year. We can
[36:29] Speaker 1: get into that more fully Zeth and I will have
[36:32] Speaker 1: some information in the Patreon in the coming days about
[36:35] Speaker 1: when we're going to do this. In the meantime, start
[36:38] Speaker 1: thinking about what episodes you want us to produce. Come
[36:42] Speaker 1: to this Zoom prepared. Just like Zeth Lundy comes to
[36:46] Speaker 1: the Hollywoodland feed every week prepared. He's talking to you
[36:49] Speaker 1: guys in the wrap party, as am I with our recommendations.
