[0:01] Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
[0:05] Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
[0:08] Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
[0:12] Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
[0:30] Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
[0:32] Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
[0:34] Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
[0:36] Speaker 1: episode or Disgraceland to the other, the backyard, to dig
[0:39] Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth and
[0:42] Speaker 1: to confront the myth and to reclaim the story. On
[0:44] Speaker 1: this bonus episode, Sonic Youth The Definition of Punk, a
[0:49] Speaker 1: Weezer episode preview, and an update on our Made Madness
[0:53] Speaker 1: sitcom music Slugfest, plus your voicemails, texts, emails, comments, dms,
[0:58] Speaker 1: and as always, a whole lot of Rosie. This is
[1:01] Speaker 1: the podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent
[1:04] Speaker 1: thinkers who know that the best history is the history
[1:07] Speaker 1: that gets buried. Disgraceland is where I tell the stories
[1:10] Speaker 1: they didn't want told, the kind you'll end up telling
[1:12] Speaker 1: someone else. All right, disc goes, let's get into it.
[1:29] Speaker 1: So I'm writing about Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore from
[1:32] Speaker 1: Sonic Youth this week. It's for an upcoming episode, obviously,
[1:36] Speaker 1: and the episode is less about one of the coolest
[1:41] Speaker 1: rock and roll couples to ever take the stage together,
[1:44] Speaker 1: though it's partly about their relationship, but it's more about
[1:48] Speaker 1: the true crime at the heart of the Sonic Youth
[1:51] Speaker 1: album cover for Go, one of the coolest album covers
[1:55] Speaker 1: of all time, and cool. The concept of cool. It
[2:00] Speaker 1: came up over and over again in the Sonic Youth
[2:02] Speaker 1: research and in the research for the crime photo depicted
[2:06] Speaker 1: in the album's art. Cool as in cool sound, cool look,
[2:11] Speaker 1: cool attitude, cool as in cool way of living your life,
[2:14] Speaker 1: cool as it being cool to each other, to your fans,
[2:17] Speaker 1: to your wife, cool thing, all of that. Okay, Sonic
[2:21] Speaker 1: Youth were the coolest, and then they weren't thirst and
[2:25] Speaker 1: more lost his cool. But you can't take away from
[2:30] Speaker 1: what that band was, from what they created, from the
[2:33] Speaker 1: impact that they had. I did a podcast interview last
[2:37] Speaker 1: week on a show with some friends of mine, show
[2:38] Speaker 1: called Stuff they Don't Want you to Know. It's not
[2:40] Speaker 1: out yet, but it'll be out soon, and they asked
[2:43] Speaker 1: me to describe Sonic Youth, and I said, that the
[2:45] Speaker 1: band was a mix of East Coast no wave and
[2:48] Speaker 1: West Coast hardcore. And I suppose that that's just the
[2:53] Speaker 1: music historians half cute way of describing their music. In
[2:58] Speaker 1: describing Raymond Petibon, the artist who created the artwork for
[3:04] Speaker 1: Sonic Youth, Goo Greg Ginn from Black Flag's brother, Petibon,
[3:10] Speaker 1: the dude who created all those great Black Flag album
[3:13] Speaker 1: covers SSD Flyers, you recognize this stuff. I describe Petibon
[3:19] Speaker 1: in the following way. This is when I was writing
[3:22] Speaker 1: about the episode yesterday, by the way, not in the
[3:24] Speaker 1: podcast interview, but I wrote the following. In a word,
[3:27] Speaker 1: Petabond's work is punk. Here are some other words. Petabond's
[3:31] Speaker 1: art is subversive, It's dangerous, larcenus and again totally unique
[3:37] Speaker 1: like real punk, no matter the context seventies eighties East coast,
[3:42] Speaker 1: West Coast UK US. You know it when you hear it.
[3:47] Speaker 1: With Petabond's art, you know it when you see it.
[3:50] Speaker 1: Now about Sonic Youth, I wrote, when Sonic Youth began
[3:54] Speaker 1: back in nineteen eighty one, they weren't punk. Punk was dead.
[3:57] Speaker 1: They weren't new wave, they were no wave. They weren't
[4:00] Speaker 1: just loud they were noise, and they weren't your typical
[4:04] Speaker 1: rock and roll band set up. There was a girl
[4:06] Speaker 1: in the band and her name was Kim Kim Gordon,
[4:10] Speaker 1: and she was a badass, not some cutesy ornament, not
[4:13] Speaker 1: some sultry front woman. She was gorgeous, sure, but beyond stereotyping.
[4:18] Speaker 1: Her beauty seemed to spring from her strength, not polish.
[4:22] Speaker 1: So in trying to describe the coolness of this band,
[4:26] Speaker 1: the coolness of the artist, Raymond Peedimond, that they collaborated
[4:31] Speaker 1: with the coolness of the Goo album cover, I kept
[4:34] Speaker 1: coming up against the word punk, and Sonic Youth was
[4:37] Speaker 1: heavily influenced by seventies punk rock. Thurstay Moore was there
[4:42] Speaker 1: at nearly every important late seventies early eighties New York
[4:46] Speaker 1: City punk moment. Yet Sonic Youth they're not really thought
[4:49] Speaker 1: of as a punk band. They're thought of as something else,
[4:53] Speaker 1: and that's fine. I don't really care, only so much
[4:55] Speaker 1: as a matter of my own intellectual curiosity, how do
[4:59] Speaker 1: we categorize this band, or any band from the eighties
[5:02] Speaker 1: or nineties who came out of the influence of punk. Again,
[5:06] Speaker 1: back to what I said, like real punk, No matter
[5:08] Speaker 1: the context seventies eighties, East Coast, West Coast, UK, US.
[5:13] Speaker 1: You know it when you hear it. Now? Have you
[5:16] Speaker 1: ever heard Jerry Lee Lewis's Live at the Star Club
[5:19] Speaker 1: album from nineteen sixty four. If that is not punk rock,
[5:23] Speaker 1: I don't know what it is. How about the Sonics album?
[5:27] Speaker 1: Here are the Sonics from nineteen sixty five, also way punk.
[5:31] Speaker 1: These albums are punk in sound, if not attitude. But
[5:36] Speaker 1: what about Miles Davis is on the Corner that record
[5:39] Speaker 1: from nineteen seventy two, or John Lennon's Sometime in New
[5:41] Speaker 1: York City, also from seventy two. The attitudes expressed by
[5:45] Speaker 1: these artists on these albums, they're about as subversive as
[5:48] Speaker 1: you'll find on anything by the Ramones or the Clash.
[5:52] Speaker 1: But punk rock as a musical term, it didn't come
[5:54] Speaker 1: into play until after Jerry Lee Lewis and the Sonics
[5:58] Speaker 1: and Miles and John. It didn't come into play until
[6:00] Speaker 1: nineteen seventy two, when Lenny Ky used the phrase punk
[6:03] Speaker 1: rock in his liner notes to his Excellent Nuggets compilation.
[6:07] Speaker 1: Now Miriam Webster The Dictionary defines punk rock as rock
[6:12] Speaker 1: music marked by extreme and often deliberately offensive expressions. Of
[6:18] Speaker 1: alienation and social discontent. So by that definition, all of
[6:23] Speaker 1: the albums I mentioned, Jerry Lee Lewis's Star Club, the Sonics,
[6:28] Speaker 1: here are the Sonics, the John Lennon Sometime in New
[6:31] Speaker 1: York City album, even Miles Davis is on the Corner.
[6:35] Speaker 1: All of these, by that definition, could be considered punk rock,
[6:38] Speaker 1: but they're not. And I kind of get it again
[6:41] Speaker 1: to me, the first punk rock album is the Ramones album,
[6:45] Speaker 1: the self titled album from nineteen seventy six. All these
[6:49] Speaker 1: albums came before, and there's a whole host of other
[6:52] Speaker 1: albums that are punk in attitude and in sound but
[6:57] Speaker 1: aren't considered punk. So what are they? What albums by
[7:02] Speaker 1: which artists are punkin attitude, even in sound, but are
[7:05] Speaker 1: not considered punk rock. Johnny Cash at San Quentin, LCD
[7:10] Speaker 1: Sound Systems, Dance Yourself Clean, Peaches, The Teaches of Peaches,
[7:14] Speaker 1: Paul McCartney's ram Tori Amos's Strange Little Girls, Zappa Massive Attack,
[7:20] Speaker 1: Beef Heart. What albums by which artists are punkin attitude
[7:24] Speaker 1: by your estimation, even in sound, but are not considered
[7:28] Speaker 1: punk rock? What do you got? Let me know? Six
[7:31] Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight voicemail
[7:34] Speaker 1: and text. This is a fascinating question that I'm hoping
[7:38] Speaker 1: we can dissect and debate here in the after Party
[7:41] Speaker 1: over the coming weeks and coming episodes again six one
[7:44] Speaker 1: seven nine oh six sixty six three eight let me
[7:47] Speaker 1: know which albums are not considered to be punk rock
[7:51] Speaker 1: but that are now None of the albums or artists
[7:55] Speaker 1: that I just mentioned are listed on the new Rolling
[7:58] Speaker 1: Stone list of one hundred Great punk Rock Albums of
[8:00] Speaker 1: All time. This list, I refuse to get upset about it.
[8:07] Speaker 1: I can no longer emotionally attach myself to the monsters
[8:09] Speaker 1: at Rolling Stone Magazine who who create these god forsaken lists.
[8:13] Speaker 1: This one, released two days ago, has been called, among
[8:18] Speaker 1: other things, absolute chaos. And you know that's for those
[8:22] Speaker 1: of us who are you know, less emotionally centered than
[8:25] Speaker 1: I am, I guess, and less susceptible to complete and
[8:29] Speaker 1: total rage bait, which which God damn this list, the
[8:33] Speaker 1: fall Over Circle, Jerks, Turnstile above, Johnny Thunders, Green Day above,
[8:38] Speaker 1: Minor Threat, just listill driving nuts. But I'm not gonna
[8:40] Speaker 1: let it drive me nuts. I'm not now Zeth and
[8:43] Speaker 1: I are going to get into this list, and we're
[8:44] Speaker 1: going to We're going to discuss the insane thinking around
[8:48] Speaker 1: punk rock over at Rolling Stone in the exclusive section
[8:52] Speaker 1: of this after party, and we're also going to get
[8:54] Speaker 1: into the mechanics a little bit to the end of
[8:57] Speaker 1: the mechanics behind these lists, how they're put together. We
[9:00] Speaker 1: talked about that that great New York Times list a
[9:03] Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago about the greatest living American songwriters,
[9:07] Speaker 1: and we have some information about how that list came
[9:09] Speaker 1: to be, some behind the scenes action. We're going to
[9:11] Speaker 1: talk about that all coming up. Like I said in
[9:14] Speaker 1: the exclusive section of the after Party, go to disgrace
[9:16] Speaker 1: slampod dot com to sign up to become an all
[9:18] Speaker 1: access member and unlock exclusive content like this plus ad
[9:22] Speaker 1: free content now in the feed this week, our new
[9:25] Speaker 1: episode on Christina Grimmy from the Voice and the terribly
[9:31] Speaker 1: sad and inexplicable murder and what happened to her. It's
[9:35] Speaker 1: just it's just awful, but it's an episode worth listening to,
[9:39] Speaker 1: so check that out. We're going to hit up on
[9:41] Speaker 1: that a little bit later in the after Party here.
[9:44] Speaker 1: Coming up this weekend in the rewind slot, our classic
[9:47] Speaker 1: episode on Anthony bourdein Okay, speaking of punks who weren't punk.
[9:53] Speaker 1: Bourdain wasn't a musician either, but he was a rock star.
[9:56] Speaker 1: So I had to tell this story. And I can't
[9:58] Speaker 1: wait for you guys to hear the episode if you
[10:00] Speaker 1: have not already. It's more of a tribute than it
[10:03] Speaker 1: is an expose. But trust me, you're gonna find it revelatory.
[10:06] Speaker 1: You're gonna find it revealing in ways that you won't believe,
[10:08] Speaker 1: even if you've seen every No Reservations episode or if
[10:12] Speaker 1: you've read all of Bourdein's books. There's a lot of
[10:14] Speaker 1: meat on this bone, pun intended. Now that's coming up
[10:17] Speaker 1: on Sunday, all right, you can listen while you're getting
[10:20] Speaker 1: Sunday dinner together. Okay, you know it seems seemed to apt, right,
[10:25] Speaker 1: cook listen to the Boordain Disgrace that episode. Sunday is
[10:28] Speaker 1: my day to cook, by the way, and to listen
[10:30] Speaker 1: to stuff. I find it to be very relaxing. But
[10:33] Speaker 1: I'm getting off topic. Listen next week in our next
[10:36] Speaker 1: new episode. This one is gonna be on Weezer. That's right, Weezer.
[10:40] Speaker 1: Now what true crime is there possibly to tell about Weezer?
[10:43] Speaker 1: That's what you're asking yourself, right, now, is it Rivers
[10:45] Speaker 1: Como's belief in the algorithm? Is it his complicated relationship
[10:50] Speaker 1: with massage Parlors? What about a bass player who lived
[10:53] Speaker 1: at debauchrous rock and roll lifestyle a little too fully
[10:57] Speaker 1: all the way to an early grave. Yeah, that happened.
[11:01] Speaker 1: Or perhaps it's about a shootout with the cops. How
[11:05] Speaker 1: about it's about all of this and more. This is
[11:07] Speaker 1: the Weezer story like you've never heard it before. So
[11:09] Speaker 1: do not sleep on this upcoming new episode of Disgraceland
[11:13] Speaker 1: on Tuesday. My favorite Weezer album, by the way, is Pinkerton,
[11:16] Speaker 1: and not just because it was recorded right down the
[11:18] Speaker 1: street from the apartment I was living in at the time,
[11:20] Speaker 1: but because it is heavy, h eavy. But it was
[11:25] Speaker 1: a flop as well. Commercially it flopped, and it's probably
[11:28] Speaker 1: Rivers Cuomo's least favorite Weezer album anyway you look at it.
[11:33] Speaker 1: Pinkerton is a departure from what we've come to know
[11:36] Speaker 1: and expect Weezer to sound like. So when you're listening
[11:39] Speaker 1: to the Weezer episode of Disgraceland next week, be thinking
[11:42] Speaker 1: about what your favorite album is by a band that
[11:45] Speaker 1: is a total outlier of an album, okay, that is
[11:48] Speaker 1: totally different from anything else in their catalog albums like
[11:52] Speaker 1: Pink Floyd's Metal or Neil Young's Shocking Pinks or Paul
[11:56] Speaker 1: McCartney's Run Devil Run, Metallica's Lulu Even Let Me Know
[12:00] Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
[12:02] Speaker 1: That's going to be the question of the week for
[12:04] Speaker 1: next week. Voicemail and text at Disgrace Lampod on the
[12:08] Speaker 1: socials Disgrace Lampod at gmail dot com. You want to
[12:10] Speaker 1: email me, I'll be back right after this to hear
[12:13] Speaker 1: from you guys, to hear from you on text, your voicemail,
[12:16] Speaker 1: et cetera.
[12:17] Speaker 2: Back in the flash.
[12:38] Speaker 1: So I'm doing this thing where I'm doing this intermittent
[12:42] Speaker 1: fasting thing. Every day, I stop eating at like eight
[12:45] Speaker 1: o'clock at night, and I don't eat again until noon
[12:49] Speaker 1: the next day. It's now as I record this, eight
[12:55] Speaker 1: minutes to noon, it's eleven fifty two. And what happens
[12:59] Speaker 1: is typically come eleven am, I'm I'm ready to just
[13:05] Speaker 1: kill somebody. I'm so angry because I'm so hungry. But then,
[13:10] Speaker 1: you know, and then I'm gonna eat at twelve that's
[13:12] Speaker 1: the plan. But then twelve comes and my hunger goes away.
[13:16] Speaker 1: It's crazy, crazy, and I'm hitting that phase right now,
[13:21] Speaker 1: right now as we're talking. I don't know why I
[13:23] Speaker 1: thought you'd find this interesting, but I did. Anyhow, there
[13:26] Speaker 1: you have it. I'm back. I'm in the phone booth.
[13:27] Speaker 1: It's the one across the hall. You know what I'm doing,
[13:30] Speaker 1: even though I'm hungry, or maybe I'm not hungry anymore.
[13:32] Speaker 1: I can't tell. I'm hanging on the telephone. Let's hear
[13:34] Speaker 1: from you guys, All right, let's hear from D in
[13:39] Speaker 1: the two one four on You guys don't want to
[13:41] Speaker 1: talk about this, and that's fine. You want to keep
[13:43] Speaker 1: talking about the Mount Rushmore of Gone Too Soon artists.
[13:46] Speaker 1: I'm here for it. This is D's take.
[13:48] Speaker 3: Hey Jake, it's D from Dallas, and I'm getting in
[13:52] Speaker 3: with my Gone Too Soon Mount Rushmore and that is
[13:59] Speaker 3: a new winehouse. Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington and of course
[14:06] Speaker 3: Kurt Cobain. Also, have you ever done an episode on
[14:12] Speaker 3: the conspiracy theory behind the Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington
[14:20] Speaker 3: air quote suicide?
[14:23] Speaker 4: Maybe you should?
[14:26] Speaker 5: Bye?
[14:28] Speaker 1: All right? Thank you? Do you think for checking in?
[14:29] Speaker 1: Thanks for giving us your list. I haven't done anything
[14:32] Speaker 1: on the air quote end of life stuff there with
[14:35] Speaker 1: Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington. I have looked into it.
[14:39] Speaker 1: I can't find anything credible that supports the conspiracy theory.
[14:44] Speaker 1: And I know that it is kind of sort of
[14:48] Speaker 1: somewhat in a roundabout way connected to Anthony Bourdain. So
[14:53] Speaker 1: and like I said, that episode is coming up in
[14:55] Speaker 1: the rewind slot in a couple of days, and again
[14:59] Speaker 1: I looked in do it. Didn't find anything credible. If
[15:03] Speaker 1: you found anything credible, keyword credible by all means, send
[15:07] Speaker 1: it to me and I'll look at it with fresh eyes.
[15:10] Speaker 1: Thanks t all Right, let's see what Rick's doing in
[15:12] Speaker 1: three one seven.
[15:13] Speaker 6: Hey Jake, it's Rick three one seven. Love your show.
[15:17] Speaker 6: It's awesome listening to it for years. Yeah. Usually what
[15:20] Speaker 6: I'm doing is just having a cocktail and sitting back
[15:23] Speaker 6: and being informed. But keep doing what you're doing.
[15:27] Speaker 5: I was gonna ask you were going to do a
[15:28] Speaker 5: show maybe on a well larned conspiracy with John McVay,
[15:32] Speaker 5: who had ties in with Monster Magnet, ties in with
[15:37] Speaker 5: queensland Stone Age. So I don't know how much debauchery's
[15:41] Speaker 5: going on that, but uh, with those names you've got
[15:44] Speaker 5: to be souping right. All right, man, you take it easy,
[15:47] Speaker 5: Robert roll.
[15:48] Speaker 1: All right, Let's check out Scott in d five one six.
[15:53] Speaker 4: Hey, Jake, my name is Scott. I listened to every
[15:56] Speaker 4: one of year episodes. I am a quadriplegic that goes
[16:00] Speaker 4: to the Jim daily and I always just know all
[16:02] Speaker 4: your episodes. You speak so fast it took me a
[16:05] Speaker 4: while to write down your number to be typing into
[16:08] Speaker 4: my phone. I'm just saying i'd like to tell you.
[16:11] Speaker 4: One of the greatest tights films I've ever seen, and
[16:14] Speaker 4: I'm sure you've seen it, is The Italian Jump. I
[16:17] Speaker 4: wrote you a text on I want to know what
[16:18] Speaker 4: you think about it again. My name is Scott n
[16:21] Speaker 4: call him from Staten Island, New York five one six
[16:24] Speaker 4: area code. You can use my name and I can't
[16:27] Speaker 4: wait to hear the next one you drop and Gretish
[16:31] Speaker 4: caw trace movie The Blues Brothers No Doubt About It
[16:35] Speaker 4: by Jake.
[16:37] Speaker 1: Scott in the five one six Appreciate you man, good job.
[16:40] Speaker 1: I'm going to the gym every day. Jealous. I don't
[16:43] Speaker 1: have that kind of dedication, Okay, Scott, I'm sorry, dude.
[16:50] Speaker 1: I haven't seen the Italian Job. I have not seen
[16:52] Speaker 1: the original, nor have I seen the remake for the
[16:56] Speaker 1: early two thousands. Which one are you referring to?
[16:58] Speaker 2: Though?
[16:58] Speaker 1: The original? Right, guys? Scott's referencing a conversation that Zeth
[17:03] Speaker 1: and I have over in the Hollywood Land feed on.
[17:07] Speaker 1: He's talking about greatest heist movies we're recommending. We're recommending
[17:10] Speaker 1: songs that are that were heist songs. You can check
[17:15] Speaker 1: that out if you're subscribed to Hollywood Land. Sorry to
[17:18] Speaker 1: let you down here, Scott, but thank you because now
[17:20] Speaker 1: you're prompting me to watch this. Who stars in the original?
[17:24] Speaker 2: Who is it?
[17:25] Speaker 1: Is it? Uh? My guy there, Michael Kaine? I think
[17:31] Speaker 1: it is? Or am I thinking of something else? I
[17:32] Speaker 1: should look it up. I'm not going I'm gonna keep
[17:34] Speaker 1: rolling through here. Let's do some texts. We had our
[17:37] Speaker 1: Diddy episodes in the rewind slot a couple of weeks ago.
[17:40] Speaker 1: This text comes from the five to three to oh
[17:42] Speaker 1: do I believe did he did it? My logical mind says,
[17:45] Speaker 1: how could I not? I still haven't seen any evidence
[17:47] Speaker 1: that proves he didn't. He didn't proves that he didn't
[17:51] Speaker 1: do it. She hasn't seen any evidence that proves any other.
[17:53] Speaker 2: Okay, she was not to say.
[17:55] Speaker 1: All we see and hear about is the overwhelming, damning
[17:57] Speaker 1: evidence against him. So yeah, he did it. His mammoth
[18:00] Speaker 1: sized ego couldn't shut up about it. Ha ha, what
[18:03] Speaker 1: a douche. Keep up the good work, Jake. Love your podcast,
[18:06] Speaker 1: Danny C. I tend to agree with you. Last week
[18:09] Speaker 1: we were talking about this David story that's developing out
[18:13] Speaker 1: or the court cases developing out in Los Angeles, D
[18:17] Speaker 1: four VD and the seven to one to three writes
[18:20] Speaker 1: in the David episode bonus. I read the indictment and
[18:24] Speaker 1: then looked up cadaver bags on Amazon thirteen ninety nine,
[18:28] Speaker 1: and I was worried I would be on a list.
[18:31] Speaker 1: Why can you buy this without a special license? I
[18:34] Speaker 1: don't know. I don't have an answer for you there
[18:38] Speaker 1: seven one to three, but I appreciate it, and I
[18:40] Speaker 1: can't wait to tell this story. I can't wait to
[18:42] Speaker 1: this court case wraps five four to one rights in
[18:45] Speaker 1: Jake Tom from the five to four to one Here,
[18:47] Speaker 1: what do I do while listening to your podcasts? Farming,
[18:51] Speaker 1: growing vegetables and flower seeds and fresh produce for the
[18:54] Speaker 1: people here in the lovely Mountains of Southern Oregon love
[18:57] Speaker 1: the show. Rock on peace, Tom Tom, That's exciting.
[19:03] Speaker 2: You know.
[19:03] Speaker 1: I can't think of anything more heavenly than farming or gardening.
[19:08] Speaker 1: It just seems to be. It's like a fantasy of
[19:12] Speaker 1: mine to be able to do that every day, to
[19:14] Speaker 1: be completely disconnected from the technological modern aspects of life
[19:19] Speaker 1: that have their fucking talents in me twenty four to seven,
[19:23] Speaker 1: and it seems, Hey, I'm going off track here four
[19:25] Speaker 1: h five text in Hey, Disgraceland, I know I'm late.
[19:27] Speaker 1: How could you leave Randy Rhodes off the list? He
[19:31] Speaker 1: was a trained classical guitarist who was about to leave
[19:34] Speaker 1: Ozzie to pursue a career dedicated to that style of play. Yeah,
[19:40] Speaker 1: you know, And if I'm being honest, I made my
[19:42] Speaker 1: list of great Mount Rushmore guitarists pretty subjective. And Randy
[19:46] Speaker 1: Rhoads gripped me as a young child when that tribute
[19:52] Speaker 1: to Randy came out, incredible. I get in a lot
[19:55] Speaker 1: of trouble because of that album. I don't know if
[19:57] Speaker 1: I want to tell it here on this podcast, because
[19:59] Speaker 1: my kids might someday listen to this. When they're still kids,
[20:02] Speaker 1: and I don't want to hear this story, So you know,

[23:23] Speaker 1: I mentioned earlier the conversation that Zeth and I were
[23:26] Speaker 1: having about musical hes over in the Hollywood Land Feed.
[23:31] Speaker 1: This week we got into perhaps an even more interesting
[23:36] Speaker 1: musical conversation over in the Wrap Party in hollywood Land
[23:40] Speaker 1: this week when we were talking about great car music,
[23:44] Speaker 1: and that's because we get Steve McQueen happening in Hollywood
[23:46] Speaker 1: Land this week. And man, I could have talked about
[23:50] Speaker 1: this for I mean, we're supposed to come with three recommendations,
[23:55] Speaker 1: three song recommendations. I had I think seven written down,
[24:00] Speaker 1: and I could have gone. I could have kept going
[24:03] Speaker 1: something about cars and rock and roll, and a lot
[24:06] Speaker 1: of you probably don't know this. I wouldn't say I'm
[24:08] Speaker 1: a car guy, but I love cars and I love
[24:11] Speaker 1: car culture. I'm not part of a car club or
[24:13] Speaker 1: anything like that, but I was kind of part of
[24:15] Speaker 1: an unofficial one in high school with my buddies. So
[24:18] Speaker 1: this stuff is in my DNA. And any excuse I
[24:22] Speaker 1: get to talk about Jeff Tweety and Wilco's passenger Side
[24:26] Speaker 1: is a good one, Matt. Give the people a little
[24:28] Speaker 1: taste of what they might be missing if they're not
[24:31] Speaker 1: subscribed over in the Hollywood Land feed.
[24:34] Speaker 7: Paint a picture here, what's Jake Brennan teenage Jake Brennan
[24:37] Speaker 7: driving around.
[24:37] Speaker 1: In nineteen sixty eight Plymouth Barracuda straight six engine, white
[24:44] Speaker 1: red top that I bought for eight hundred bucks off,
[24:48] Speaker 1: my friend Dutch, who drove, who bought I'm sorry, who
[24:51] Speaker 1: sold me the Barracuda so that he could buy his
[24:54] Speaker 1: sixty four Dodge Dart.
[24:57] Speaker 2: We had cool.
[24:57] Speaker 1: Fucking cars, and some of it was some of it
[25:01] Speaker 1: was our own taste, and some of it was like
[25:03] Speaker 1: our dad's not mine. Well, my dad, but that was
[25:05] Speaker 1: why I had my car. Some of my friends, like
[25:08] Speaker 1: my friend Billy, his dad were at a gas station,
[25:09] Speaker 1: so he was gifted a Cherry red sixty seven Camaro
[25:13] Speaker 1: when he got his license. Bastard. We had to pay
[25:16] Speaker 1: for ours, but we had cool freaking muscle cars, and
[25:19] Speaker 1: car culture was part of our world in this small
[25:22] Speaker 1: town that we grew up in. And this song in particular,
[25:25] Speaker 1: when Ministry released Jesus Built My hot Rod, it was
[25:29] Speaker 1: like our minds exploded because it was everything. It was everything.
[25:33] Speaker 1: And I didn't know until today that that was Gibby
[25:36] Speaker 1: Haying singing that song from Butthole Surfers. Did you know that? No?
[25:40] Speaker 1: I didn't know that. I didn't know that either. Man,
[25:42] Speaker 1: I did not know that, and I thought that was
[25:44] Speaker 1: like some old movie sample at the beginning that I
[25:47] Speaker 1: just read to you. That soon I discovered that this
[25:50] Speaker 1: rock thing was true, Jerry Lewis was the devil, and
[25:53] Speaker 1: Jesus was an architect prior to his career as a prophet.
[25:56] Speaker 1: All of a sudden, I found myself in love with
[25:59] Speaker 1: the word. I think you can put that on my headstone, dude,
[26:02] Speaker 1: and it would be like perfect. This sums up everything
[26:05] Speaker 1: about me. All right, that's a Hollywoodland feed. Make sure
[26:08] Speaker 1: you're subscribed to Hollywood Land on Apple podcasts or the
[26:11] Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcasts six one
[26:14] Speaker 1: seven nine six six six three eight. You want to
[26:16] Speaker 1: hit me up on voicemail or text Disgrace Sampod at
[26:19] Speaker 1: gmail dot com if you want to send me an
[26:21] Speaker 1: email on any of these topics that we've been discussing.
[26:24] Speaker 1: Dan Simpson writes, Hey, I think the death of Dave
[26:28] Speaker 1: Brocky of Gwar would make for a good episode. Dan,
[26:34] Speaker 1: I don't know anything about this. Nothing I know of Gwar.
[26:38] Speaker 1: Of course, I almost want to see them a couple
[26:40] Speaker 1: times with my friends, but I didn't for whatever reason.
[26:44] Speaker 1: And yeah, you're absolutely right, that would make for a
[26:46] Speaker 1: great episode. Tom g emails us what appears to be
[26:52] Speaker 1: video from inside Alistair Crowley's home is that what this
[26:56] Speaker 1: is only one of your three videos will open my
[27:00] Speaker 1: man and uh, I'm trying to put some context to this.
[27:04] Speaker 1: Hit me back, Tom, trying to piece this together. This
[27:09] Speaker 1: one comes from Peter Googer. I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly,
[27:13] Speaker 1: Peter writes in Hi, z and Jay, that's Zeth and Jake. Firstly,
[27:17] Speaker 1: thanks Zeth for the heads up on Quantum Criminals. I
[27:21] Speaker 1: didn't know about the book, so it goes without saying
[27:22] Speaker 1: that it's now on order. I also checked out John
[27:25] Speaker 1: LeMay's online store. Thanks for giving me the Albert King
[27:28] Speaker 1: rabbit hole to go down, Jake, I knew a little
[27:30] Speaker 1: about this somewhat mysterious character and self purported half brother
[27:34] Speaker 1: of BB King. I especially love the chat between you
[27:36] Speaker 1: guys on The Hunter and the appropriations the song has
[27:40] Speaker 1: been subject to led zeppein One is the album of
[27:43] Speaker 1: theirs that I've listened to the least. So I was
[27:45] Speaker 1: unaware of the directly ripped section of that Hunter song
[27:50] Speaker 1: in how many more times? If I was, I would
[27:53] Speaker 1: have recognized it immediately as Pacific Gas and Electrics version
[27:57] Speaker 1: of The Hunter. It was a minor hit here in
[27:59] Speaker 1: Austin Australia, back in nineteen sixty nine. I don't even
[28:03] Speaker 1: know about Pacific gas and electric. All right, anyways, Peter
[28:06] Speaker 1: goes on, I can actually remember listening to it on
[28:09] Speaker 1: my friend's mother's car radio. I was only tenth time,
[28:12] Speaker 1: so I didn't know about Albert King's original and certainly
[28:14] Speaker 1: wouldn't have known what a lovegun was. And then he
[28:19] Speaker 1: includes an article here on Pacific gas and electric. Peter,
[28:22] Speaker 1: thanks so much, Disgrace Lampod at gmail dot com. I
[28:24] Speaker 1: don't know anything about this version of The Hunter. I don't,
[28:28] Speaker 1: like I said, know anything about Pacific gas and electric.
[28:31] Speaker 1: But I'm excited to dig into this. Looks like they
[28:34] Speaker 1: were a inspiration on both Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page.
[28:39] Speaker 1: All from Peter's email. Thank you, Peter, Disgrace Lampod at
[28:42] Speaker 1: gmail dot com. You guys want to email me about anything,
[28:45] Speaker 1: get at me, Disgracelampod at gmail dot com. Six one
[28:49] Speaker 1: seven nine oh sixty six six three eight voicemail and
[28:51] Speaker 1: text Disgrace Lampod at Gmail at Disgrace Lampod on the socials.
